Does mental accounting matter for total consumption expenditures? We exploit a unique setting in which individuals exogenously receive a new payment card, without requesting one. Using random variation in the time of receipt, we show that individuals temporarily increase total consumption expenditure by making purchases with the new card without reducing spending on the others. We do not observe a corresponding increase in indebtedness. Total consumption expenditure rises even for the least liquidity-constrained individuals. The evidence is consistent with consumers treating methods of payment as nonfungible budget categories, as suggested by models of mental accounting and narrow bracketing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Identifying persons with HIV (PWH) at increased risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD) is complicated because memory deficits are common in HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) and a defining feature of amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI; a precursor to AD). Recognition memory deficits may be useful in differentiating these etiologies. Therefore, neuroimaging correlates of different memory deficits (i.e., recall, recognition) and their longitudinal trajectories in PWH were examined. Design: We examined 92 PWH from the CHARTER Program, ages 45–68, without severe comorbid conditions, who received baseline structural MRI and baseline and longitudinal neuropsychological testing. Linear and logistic regression examined neuroanatomical correlates (i.e., cortical thickness and volumes of regions associated with HAND and/or AD) of memory performance at baseline and multilevel modeling examined neuroanatomical correlates of memory decline (average follow-up = 6.5 years). Results: At baseline, thinner pars opercularis cortex was associated with impaired recognition (p = 0.012; p = 0.060 after correcting for multiple comparisons). Worse delayed recall was associated with thinner pars opercularis (p = 0.001) and thinner rostral middle frontal cortex (p = 0.006) cross sectionally even after correcting for multiple comparisons. Delayed recall and recognition were not associated with medial temporal lobe (MTL), basal ganglia, or other prefrontal structures. Recognition impairment was variable over time, and there was little decline in delayed recall. Baseline MTL and prefrontal structures were not associated with delayed recall. Conclusions: Episodic memory was associated with prefrontal structures, and MTL and prefrontal structures did not predict memory decline. There was relative stability in memory over time. Findings suggest that episodic memory is more related to frontal structures, rather than encroaching AD pathology, in middle-aged PWH. Background: Anterior blepharitis (AB) is a chronic eyelid inflammation with no definitive cure. Objectives: To assess the safety and efficacy of a 1% povidone-iodine (PVI) ophthalmic solution lid scrub compared to formulated eyelid wipes in treating AB. Design: A prospective, randomized, controlled, observer-masked, paired-eye trial. Methods: Sixty-three AB patients were randomly assigned to a 30-day treatment in which one eye underwent a daily lid scrub with 1% PVI solution (1% PVI group), while the fellow eye was treated with formulated eyelid wipes (control group). Clinical outcomes, such as blepharitis signs, tear breakup time, and corneal staining, were evaluated at study enrollment and exit visits. Symptom assessments utilized the visual analog scale (VAS) per eye and the ocular surface disease index (OSDI) questionnaire. Results: Fifty-two patients (mean age 62.3 years, 53.8% females) completed the treatment, while seven patients were lost to follow-up, three were non-compliant, and one sustained an eye trauma. After 30 days, both the 1% PVI and control groups exhibited significant improvements in symptoms, blepharitis signs, and corneal staining (p < 0.05). The 1% PVI scrubs were equally effective as eyelid wipes in most outcomes (p = 0.480) and superior in alleviating eyelid erythema (p = 0.007). Only the 1% PVI group showed a positive correlation between OSDI and VAS score improvements (r (52) = 0.353, p = 0.01). No adverse events related to either treatment modality were reported. Conclusions: A 1% PVI solution is an effective, safe, and well-tolerated treatment option for AB and is superior to formulated eyelid wipes in several subjective and objective measures. Introduction and Objective: One potential advantage of single-port (SP) robotic surgery compared with multiport (MP) robotic surgery is improved cosmesis. The only studies in urology patients to suggest this finding did not assess differences based on incision site. Our study evaluated SP, MP, incision location, age, gender, and prior abdominal surgery as predictors of cosmesis and scar consciousness for reconstructive procedures. Methods: This is a cohort study using an institutional review board–approved prospective genitourinary reconstruction database. Patients at least 3 months from surgery were emailed and called to complete the Consciousness subsection of the Patient Scar Assessment Questionnaire. Bothersome was defined as a score of 11 or greater. Overall consciousness was scored with a single item as "not conscious" or "conscious." Pearson's chi-squared, Wilcoxon rank sum, Fisher's exact test, and logistic regression were performed to assess how age, gender, prior surgery, and incision location affect cosmesis. Results: There were 111 patients (54 MP, 57 SP), of which 27 were SP umbilical, 14 were SP midline nonumbilical, and 16 were SP lower quadrant. On univariate analysis the periumbilical incision had the lowest consciousness. Age was associated with Bother (p = 0.012) and Consciousness (p = 0.002), whereas gender, prior abdominal surgery, and incision site were not significant. On logistic regression, all SP incisions were less likely to be bothered compared with MP, although only SP umbilical was statistically significant (odds ratio [OR] = 0.08, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.01,0.38; p = 0.005). Age was also significant on logistic regression for Bother (OR = 0.96, 95% CI: 0.93,0.99; p = 0.005). Gender and prior abdominal surgery were not associated with Bother or Consciousness. Conclusions: SP periumbilical incisions provide the best outcomes for cosmesis compared with other SP incision sites and MP incisions. This finding should be discussed and taken into account when planning surgical approaches for patients undergoing urinary reconstruction, especially in patients younger than 40 years of age. For few taxonomic groups do conservation efforts have such a disproportionate impact on biodiversity and human well-being as they do with bats. Bats face significant conservation challenges that affect their long-term viability, inhibit their ecosystem functions and services, and increase zoonotic spillover risks. Protecting bat populations and their habitats ultimately reduces these conservation threats, helps prevent pandemics, and supports essential ecosystem services. MENTOR-Bat is a fellowship program focused on strengthening technical research, and leadership capacity in the Global South to promote healthy environments where bats and humans can coexist with reduced risks of pathogen transmission. Co-designed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and Bat Conservation International (BCI), MENTOR-Bat mirrors the One Health framework by featuring a transdisciplinary team of three mentors and nine fellows from Cameroon, Colombia, and Indonesia. Fellows and mentors receive academic and field-based training on bat ecology and conservation, One Health, human dimensions of conservation, behavior change, strategic communications, international policy, adaptive management, project planning, conservation leadership, and public health. Fellows will then design and implement team pilot projects to advance One Health and bat conservation in their respective countries. Program evaluation of MENTOR-Bat is based on Kirkpatrick's Hierarchy and focuses on measuring the development of established One Health core competences. By incorporating One Health and conservation within its activities, MENTOR-Bat can become a valuable programmatic template for transdisciplinary programming advancing evidence-based strategies for improving the well-being of bats, humans, and the environment. Background: as transcatheter technologies have advanced, the patient population that is referred to open heart surgeries has shifted. This study's objective was to evaluate recent trends in the characteristics of patients undergo surgical valvular interventions and coronary revascularizations (CABG) in our center over a period of 14 years. Methods: this is a retrospective analysis of ecological trends in the age, sex, and risk profile (Charlson comorbidity index—CCI) of patients who, from January 2010 to December 2023, underwent CABG, aortic valve replacement (AVR), or mitral valve repair or replacement (with or without tricuspid valve intervention). The data were extracted from electronic clinical files using MD-Clone software. Results: for the CABG procedures, the respective data for 2010 and 2023 were: mean ages 68.0 and 64.6 years; 79.7% and 83.1% males; and mean CCI scores 3.16 and 2.51. The p-values for the cumulative differences over the study period were 0.001, 0.005, and 0.013, respectively. The respective data for isolated AVR were mean ages of 69.2 and 62.9 years; 64.1% and 59.1% males; mean CCI 3.64 and 2.32; p-values: <0.001, 0.229, and 0.019. The respective data for mitral valve procedures were mean ages of 63.6 and 59.8 years, 71.4% and 65.5% males; mean CCI 2.90 and 1.79; p-values: 0.84, 0.422, and 0.318. Conclusions: over a 14-year period, changes were evident in the age, sex distribution, and CCI for operations performed in our center. These changes most likely resulted from accumulated data regarding the advantages and detriments of treatment strategies, mostly of CABG vs. percutaneous coronary intervention; major advancements in transcatheter technologies, mostly in transcatheter AVR; and clinical guidelines facilitating a more collaborative decision-making, open-minded, and personalized approach. Dependency between the conventional imbalance diagnostic feature and the shaft rotational speed makes imbalance diagnosis challenging for variable-speed machines. This paper focuses on an investigation of this dependency and on a proposal for a novel imbalance diagnostic feature and a novel simplified version for this feature, which are independent of shaft rotational speed. An equivalent mass–spring–damper system is investigated to find a closed-form expression describing this dependency. By normalizing the conventional imbalance diagnostic feature by the obtained dependency, a diagnostic feature is proposed. By conducting comprehensive experimental trials with a wind turbine with a permissible imbalance, it is justified that the proposed simplified version of imbalance diagnostic feature is speed-invariant. A series of heterobimetallic complexes Au/M (M = RhIII, IrIII) were prepared on the basis of two ditopic ligands: a monophosphane ligand L1H and a triphosphane ligand L2H. The complexes were fully characterised, including single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Catalytic activity of cationic L1/AuI/IrIII and L2/AuI/IrIII bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide was analysed through their capacity to induce allenyl ether rearrangement and cycloisomerisation of N-propargyl benzamide. While cationic L1/AuI/IrIII showed some ability to induce allenyl ether rearrangement, no conversion was observed for cationic L2/AuI/IrIII. Similarly, N-propargyl benzamide could undergo cycloisomerisation in the presence of cationic L1/AuI/IrIII, whereas cationic L2/AuI/IrIII was again inactive. These findings highlight how crucial the surroundings of the metal centre are to the catalytic activity. Catalytic activity is only possible when Au has a free coordination site; the gold complex becomes inactive when the tridentate ligand is present. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The magnetosome, a membrane-bound iron biomineral formed within magnetotactic bacteria, is a unique model for a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reporter gene contrast agent. We are translating this technology to mammalian cells by expressing essential magnetosome genes mamI, mamL, mamB, and mamE into MDA-MB-435 human melanoma cells. Currently, these genes are individually expressed in the cell although the future goal is to express all four genes together. We examined the influence of these genes on cellular MRI relaxation rates by culturing cells in the presence and absence of iron-supplemented medium and scanning them at 3 Tesla using a gelatin phantom. Total cellular iron was measured by inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry and correlated with relaxation rates obtained from phantom experiments. Apart from mamE, magnetosome genes that are individually expressed in mammalian cells grown in iron supplement significantly affected cellular transverse relaxation rates compared to cells grown without iron supplement. Interestingly, mamI, mamL, mamB, and mamE (even though the latter had no effect on relaxation rate) significantly affected cellular iron content. This developing gene-based contrast agent will equip MRI with improvement to imaging sensitivity and the technology to track cellular activities long term. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pregnancy in women living with human immunodeficiency virus (WLWH) represents an important challenge for maternal-fetal health. Besides, they can also present anxiety (Anx) and depression (Dep). Imbalances in serotonin (5-HT), dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S), and cortisol (CORT) levels can contribute to Anx and Dep manifestations. Currently, there is not enough data about the neuroendocrine and neurochemical changes in pregnant WLWH with affective disorders. This study aimed to characterize 5-HT, DHEA-S, and CORT plasma levels in Mexican pregnant WLWH presenting Anx/Dep. Forty-two adult pregnant women were recruited during the third trimester of gestation at the National Institute of Perinatology in Mexico during 2019–2022. These patients were divided into three groups: (1) pregnant WLWH with Anx/Dep (n = 16), (2) pregnant without HIV but with Anx/Dep (n = 12), and (3) healthy pregnant women without Anx/Dep (n = 14). WLWH presented a marked reduction in 5-HT (41.33 ± 39.37 ng/dL) compared to non-infected pregnant women with Anx/Dep (220.2 ± 151.8 ng/dL) and the healthy group (370.0 ± 145.3 ng/dL). Anx/Dep infected and uninfected pregnant women showed a significant reduction in DHEA-S levels (86.58 ± 30.59 and 76.9 ± 36.7 µg/dL, respectively) compared to healthy subjects (149.7 ± 44.6 µg/dL). Anx and Dep symptoms were inversely correlated with 5-HT and DHEA-S levels. No significant differences were observed in CORT levels among the three groups (p = 0.094). Our results suggest the presence of a disbalance in 5-HT and DHEA-S levels in pregnant WLWH with affective symptoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study investigated children's understanding that an object's history may increase its significance, an appreciation that underpins the concept of historical authenticity (i.e., the idea that an item's history determines its true identity, beyond its functional or material qualities, leading people to value real items over copies or fakes). We examined the development of historical significance through the lens of parent–child conversations, and children's performance on an authenticity assessment. The final sample was American, 79.2% monoracial White, and mid‐high socio‐economic status (SES) and included 48 parent–child pairs: 24 with younger children (R = 3.5 to 4.5 years) and 24 with older children (R = 5.5 to 6.5 years). Parent–child pairs discussed three books we created, with three storylines: a museum (culturally authentic) storyline, a clean‐up (personally authentic) storyline, and a control storyline. Across measures, conversations suggested that authenticity may begin as a "placeholder concept" that is initially rooted in a broad appreciation for the significance of old objects and only later filled in with specifics. This placeholder initially directs children's learning about authenticity by linking, in an unspecified way, the value and significance of objects to their past. For example, we found that young children appropriately appealed to history (vs. perceptual or functional features of objects) in contexts regarding authentic objects but struggled in determining which objects were more significant on the post‐test assessment, suggesting that they attend to object history but are not yet sure how histories matter for making authenticity judgments. We also found some evidence that directing children's attention toward conceptual information related to object history may in turn direct them away from material or perceptual considerations, as seen in trade‐offs in parents' and children's conversations. Neuroestrogens locally synthesized in the brain are known to play a role in sexual behaviors. However, the question of whether neuroestrogens are involved in the regulation of the gonadotropin‐releasing hormone (GnRH) release is just emerging. Because previous studies in this lab indicate that neuroestradiol is also important for the pulsatile release as well as the surge release of GnRH in female rhesus monkeys, in the present study, we examined whether neuroestradiol plays a role in the estrogen‐induced LH surge in orchidectomized (ORX) male rhesus monkeys. Unlike in rodents, it is known that a high dose of estrogen treatment can result in the LH surge in ORX male rhesus monkeys. Results that the administration of the aromatase inhibitor, letrozole, failed to attenuate the estrogen‐induced LH surge, suggest that unlike in ovariectomized females, neuroestrogens do not play a role in the LH surge experimentally induced by the exogenous estrogen treatment in ORX male monkeys. A-kinase anchor protein 12 (AKAP12), a scaffold protein, has been implicated in the central nervous system, including blood-brain barrier (BBB) function. Although its expression level in the corpus callosum is higher than in other brain regions, such as the cerebral cortex, the role of AKAP12 in the corpus callosum remains unclear. In this study, we investigate the impact of AKAP12 deficiency by transcriptome analysis using RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) on the corpus callosum of AKAP12 knockout (KO) mice. We observed minimal changes, with only 13 genes showing differential expression, including Akap12 itself. Notably, Klf2 and Sgk1, genes potentially involved in BBB function, were downregulated in AKAP12 KO mice and expressed in vascular cells similar to Akap12. These changes in gene expression may affect important biological pathways that may be associated with neurological disorders. Bacteria constitute a significant part of the biomass of the human microbiota, but their interactions are complex and difficult to replicate outside the host. Exploiting the superior resolution of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to examine signal parameters of selected human isolates may allow tracking of their dispersion throughout the body. Here we investigate longitudinal and transverse MRI relaxation rates and found significant differences between several bacterial strains. Common commensal strains of lactobacilli display notably high MRI relaxation rates, partially explained by elevated cellular manganese content, while other species contain more iron than manganese. Lactobacillus crispatus show particularly high values, 4-fold greater than any other species; up to 60-fold greater signal than relevant tissue background; and a linear relationship between relaxation rate and fraction of live cells. Different bacterial strains have detectable, repeatable MRI relaxation rates that in the future may enable monitoring of their persistence in the human body for enhanced molecular imaging. In vitro examination of urogenital microbiota by MRI reveals high relaxation rates in lactobacilli and correlates quantity of bacteria with MRI measures that exceed those of the healthy human bladder epithelium. Data literacy for students in nonquantitative fields is important as statistics become the grammar of research and how the world's decisions are made. Statistics courses are typically offered by mathematics or statistics departments or by social and natural sciences such as economics, political science, psychology, and biology. Here we discuss how to construct a statistics course for students in nonquantitative fields, with a goal of integrating statistical material with students' substantive interests, using student-focused teaching methods and technology to increase student involvement. We demonstrate this kind of hybrid course with the example of an introductory applied statistics class, taught at both the University of Toronto's Anne Tanenbaum Center for Jewish Studies and the United States Naval Academy. Mind-body dualism conceptualizes mind and body as distinct, but there are different ways that dualism may be instantiated. In this study, we examined how Hierarchical Dualism (the belief that mind and body are distinct, and the mind is superior) and Mutual-Influence Dualism (the belief that mind and body are separate but interrelate) related to health behaviors and mental health in three student samples: exclusively queer, exclusively straight, and a mixed university subject pool (N = 535). Participants in each sample endorsed Mutual-Influence Dualism at a higher rate than Hierarchical Dualism. Mutual-Influence dualism was consistently associated with greater engagement in health-promoting behaviors and greater well-being, whereas Hierarchical Dualism differed by sample. These results suggest that dualist beliefs do not uniformly shape the lives of those who hold them: rather, the relation between dualist beliefs and health differs as a function of the type of dualism and the identities we hold. The COVID‐19 pandemic in the United States has had a disproportionate impact on Black, low‐income, and elderly individuals. We recruited 175 predominantly white children ages 5–12 and their parents (N = 112) and asked which of two individuals (differing in age, gender, race, social class, or personality) was more likely to get sick with either COVID‐19 or the common cold and why. Children and parents reported that older adults were more likely to get sick than younger adults, but reported few differences based on gender, race, social class, or personality. Children predominantly used behavioral explanations, but older children used more biological and structural explanations. Despite increases in visibility, gender‐nonconforming young people continue to be at risk for bullying and discrimination. Prior work has established that gender essentialism in children correlates with prejudice against people who do not conform to gender norms, but to date no causal link has been established. The present study investigated this link more directly by testing whether children's gender essentialism and prejudice against gender nonconformity can be reduced by exposure to anti‐essentialist messaging. Children ages 6–10 years of age (N = 102) in the experimental condition viewed a short video describing similarities between boys and girls and variation within each gender; children in the control condition (N = 102) viewed a corresponding video describing similarities between two types of climate and variation within each. Children then received measures of gender essentialism and prejudice against gender nonconformity. Finally, to ask whether manipulating children's gender essentialism extends to another domain, we included assessments of racial essentialism and prejudice. We found positive correlations between gender essentialism and prejudice against gender nonconformity; both also correlated negatively with participant age. However, we observed no differences between children in the experimental versus control conditions in overall essentialism or prejudice, indicating that our video was largely ineffective in manipulating essentialism. Accordingly, we were unable to provide evidence of a causal relationship between essentialism and prejudice. We did, however, see a difference between conditions on the discreteness measure, which is most closely linked to the wording in the video. This finding suggests that specific aspects of essentialism in young children may be modifiable. Research Highlights: Consistent with prior research, we found that greater gender essentialism was associated with greater prejudice against gender‐nonconforming children; both decreased with age.We randomly assigned children to view either an anti‐essentialist video manipulation or a control video to test if this relation was causal in nature.The anti‐essentialist video did not reduce overall essentialism as compared to the control, so we did not find support for a causal link.We observed a reduction in the dimension of essentialism most closely linked to the anti‐essentialist video language, suggesting the potential utility of anti‐essentialist messaging. This review focuses on the synthetic inorganic chemistry of structural and functional models of Mo-Cu CO dehydrogenase (CODH). Mo-Cu CODH is an aerobic enzyme that catalyzes CO oxidation. The active site of Mo-Cu CODH demonstrates a structural motif unprecedented in inorganic chemistry: dithiolene-ligated MoVIO2S linked to a two-coordinate Cu(I) through a single bridging sulfido, {MoVIO2(μ2-S)CuI}. There is significant interest in understanding how this unusual active site structure enables reactivity. Structural analogues of varying accuracy have been reported by several research groups and are discussed in this review. Most of the modeling chemistry indicates that the single sulfido-bridged MoVI-(μ2-S)-CuI structure is unstable when the metals are coordinatively unsaturated, generally collapsing into the stable MoVI-(μ2-S)2-CuI or MoVI-(μ2-S)(μ2-O)-CuI diamond cores outside of the protein environments. Whereas singly bridged {MoVIO2(μ2-S)CuI} oxidizes CO and inserts CNR (isocyanide) efficiently, no biomimetic CODH-relevant reactivity was observed for the synthetic analogues containing the aforementioned diamond cores. An alternative synthetic approach pursuing a "bioinspired" functional model is also discussed. In this approach, two relevant metal sites (hypothesized to be primarily responsible for the reactivity) are combined into a heterobimetallic complex using appropriate heterodinucleating ligands. Syntheses, structures, and cooperative bimetallic reactivity of these heterobimetallic complexes will be discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research on lawmaking generally examines why lawmakers enact certain policy ideas. However, most ideas in the United States Congress never become law. Eventually, members stop introducing them altogether. This process, where policies are proposed, not acted on, and no longer advocated for is, by far, the most common legislative outcome. The literature pays it little attention. Yet, how ideas die is important in understanding why some measures stop being realistic alternatives, the importance of policy entrepreneurship, and how policy windows affect the supply of ideas. This paper analyzes why congressional ideas die. I argue and find that the proposals designed to be enacted, especially by legislators with more issue expertise and agenda-setting powers, are less likely to persist across terms. I also show that ideas disappear more often when their sponsors leave Congress, but do not find a similar pattern for when policy windows close and lawmaking conditions worsen. Skeletal muscle atrophy and dysfunction commonly accompany cardiovascular diseases such as peripheral arterial disease and may be partially attributable to systemic inflammation. We sought to determine whether acute systemic inflammation in a model of hindlimb ischaemia (HLI) could affect skeletal muscle macrophage infiltration, fibre size, or capillarization, independent of the ischaemia. Eight‐week‐old C57BL/6 male mice underwent either Sham or HLI surgery, and were killed 1, 3, or 7 days post‐surgery. Circulating inflammatory cytokine concentrations were measured, as well as immune cell infiltration and morphology of skeletal muscle from both limbs of HLI and Sham mice. In HLI compared with Sham mice at day 1, plasma interleukin‐1β levels were 216% higher (0.48 ± 0.10 vs. 0.15 ± 0.01 pg/μL, P = 0.005) and decreased by day 3. This was followed by increased macrophage presence in muscle from both ischaemic and non‐ischaemic limbs of HLI mice by day 7 (7.3‐ and 2.3‐fold greater than Sham, respectively, P < 0.0001). In HLI mice, muscle from the ischaemic limb had 21% lower fibre cross‐sectional area than the non‐ischaemic limb (724 ± 28 vs. 916 ± 46 μm2, P = 0.01), but the non‐ischaemic limb of HLI mice was no different from Sham. This shows that HLI induces acute systemic inflammation accompanied by immune infiltration in both ischaemic and remote skeletal muscle; however, this did not induce skeletal muscle atrophy in remote muscle within the 7‐day time course of this study. This effect of local skeletal muscle ischaemia on the inflammatory status of remote skeletal muscle may signal a priming of muscle for subsequent atrophy over a longer time course. Respiratory failure occurs more frequently after thoracic surgery than abdominal surgery. Although the etiology for this complication is frequently attributed to underlying lung disease present in patients undergoing thoracic surgery, this notion is often unfounded because many patients with normal preoperative pulmonary function often require prolonged oxygen supplementation even after minimal resection of lung tissue. Using a murine model of pulmonary resection and peripheral blood samples from patients undergoing resection of the lung or abdominal organs, we demonstrated that lung surgery initiates a proinflammatory loop that results in damage to the remaining lung tissue, noncardiogenic pulmonary edema, hypoxia, and even death. Specifically, we demonstrated that resection of murine lung tissue increased concentrations of the homeostatic cytokine interleukin-7, which led to local and systemic activation of type 2 innate lymphoid cells. This process activated lung-resident eosinophils and facilitated stress-induced eosinophil maturation in the bone marrow in a granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor–dependent manner, resulting in systemic eosinophilia in both mice and humans. Up-regulation of inducible nitric oxide synthase in lung-resident eosinophils led to tissue nitrosylation, pulmonary edema, hypoxia, and, at times, death. Disrupting this activation cascade at any stage ameliorated deleterious outcomes and improved survival after lung resection in the mouse model. Our data suggest that repurposing US Food and Drug Administration–approved eosinophil-targeting strategies may potentially offer a therapeutic intervention to improve outcomes for patients who require lung resection for benign or malignant etiology. Introduction: The main obstacle in treating cancer patients is drug resistance. Lenvatinib treatment poses challenges due to loss of response and the common dose-limiting adverse events (AEs). The Constrained-disorder-principle (CDP)- based second-generation artificial intelligence (AI) systems introduce variability into treatment regimens and offer a potential strategy for enhancing treatment efficacy. This proof-of-concept clinical trial aimed to assess the impact of a personalized algorithm-controlled therapeutic regimen on lenvatinib effectiveness and tolerability. Methods: A 14-week open-label, non-randomized trial was conducted with five cancer patients receiving lenvatinib--an AI-assisted application tailored to a personalized therapeutic regimen for each patient, which the treating physician approved. The study assessed changes in tumor response through FDG-PET-CT and tumor markers and quality of life via the EORTC QLQ-THY34 questionnaire, AEs, and laboratory evaluations. The app monitored treatment adherence. Results: At 14 weeks of follow-up, the disease control rate (including the following outcomes: complete response, partial response, stable disease) was 80%. The FDG-PET-CT scan-based RECIST v1.1 and PERCIST criteria showed partial response in 40% of patients and stable disease in an additional 40% of patients. One patient experienced a progressing disease. Of the participants with thyroid cancer, 75% showed a reduction in thyroglobulin levels, and 60% of all the participants showed a decrease in neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio during treatment. Improvement in the median social support score among patients utilizing the system supports an ancillary benefit of the intervention. No grade 4 AEs or functional deteriorations were recorded. Summary: The results of this proof-of-concept open-labeled clinical trial suggest that the CDP-based second-generation AI system-generated personalized therapeutic recommendations may improve the response to lenvatinib with manageable AEs. The average causal effect can often be best understood in the context of its variation. We demonstrate with two sets of four graphs, all of which represent the same average effect but with much different patterns of heterogeneity. As with the famous correlation quartet of Anscombe, these graphs dramatize the way in which real-world variation can be more complex than simple numerical summaries. Amalgamation of evidence in statistics is conducted in several ways. Within a study, multiple observations are combined by averaging, or as factors in a likelihood or prediction algorithm. In multilevel modeling or Bayesian analysis, population or prior information is combined with data using the weighted averaging derived from probability modeling. In a scientific research project, inferences from data analysis are interpreted in light of mechanistic models and substantive theories. Within a scholarly or applied research community, data and conclusions from separate laboratories are amalgamated through a series of steps, including peer review, meta-analysis, review articles, and replication studies. These issues have been discussed for many years in the philosophy of science and statistics, gaining attention in recent decades first with the renewed popularity of Bayesian inference and then with concerns about the replication crisis in science. In this article, we review the amalgamation of statistical evidence from different perspectives, connecting the foundations of statistics to the social processes of validation, criticism, and consensus building. These algorithms require large volumes of data for development and fine-tuning. As use of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) integrase strand transfer inhibitors (INSTI) increases and formulations are being developed for maintenance therapies and chemoprophylaxis, assessing virus suppression under INSTI-based regimens in prevention-relevant biologic compartments, such as the male genital tract, is timely. We used cell-source marker virion immunocapture to examine amplification of particle RNA then assessed the phylogenetic relatedness of seminal and blood viral sequences from men with HIV who were prescribed INSTI-based regimens. Seminal plasma immunocaptures yielded amplifiable virion RNA from 13 of 24 (54%) men, and the sequences were primarily associated with markers indicative of macrophage and resident dendritic cell sources. Genetic distances were greatest (>2%) between seminal virions and circulating proviruses, pointing to ongoing low-level expression from tissue-resident cells. While the low levels in semen predict an improbable likelihood of transmission, viruses with large genetic distances are expressed under potent INSTI therapy and have implications for determining epidemiologic linkages if adherence is suboptimal. Linguistic practices allow individuals to build conceptions of experience that are culture specific and community shared. We examine this process in relation to a metalinguistic convention for describing vocal sounds in upland central Laos. We argue that linguistic practices are moorings, in two ways. First, for individuals, a linguistic practice is a public fixture to which action, status, and experience are conceptually tied. Second, for communities, the category serves as a communal fixture that associates may coordinate around. We elaborate a model of the community calibration of experience, proposing mechanisms that motivate and guide people in constructing effectively shared representations. The study of HIV infection and pathogenicity in physical reservoirs requires a biologically relevant model. The human immune system (HIS) mouse is an established model of HIV infection, but defects in immune tissue reconstitution remain a challenge for examining pathology in tissues. We utilized exogenous injection of the human recombinant FMS-like tyrosine kinase 3 ligand (rFLT-3 L) into the hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) cord blood HIS mouse model to significantly expand the total area of lymph node (LN) and the number of circulating human T cells. The results enabled visualization and quantification of HIV infectivity, CD4 T cell depletion and other measures of pathogenesis in the secondary lymphoid tissues of the spleen and LN. Treatment with the Caspase-1/4 inhibitor VX-765 limited CD4+ T cell loss in the spleen and reduced viral load in both the spleen and axillary LN. In situ hybridization further demonstrated a decrease in viral RNA in both the spleen and LN. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that in vivo inhibition of caspase-1/4 led to an upregulation in host HIV restriction factors including SAMHD1 and APOBEC3A. These findings highlight the use of rFLT-3 L to augment human immune system characteristics in HIS mice to support investigations of HIV pathogenesis and test host directed therapies, though further refinements are needed to further augment LN architecture and cellular populations. The results further provide in vivo evidence of the potential to target inflammasome pathways as an avenue of host-directed therapy to limit immune dysfunction and virus replication in tissue compartments of HIV+ persons. American political parties continue to grow more polarized, but the extent of ideological polarization among the public is much less than the extent of perceived polarization (what the ideological gap is believed to be). Perceived polarization is concerning because of its link to interparty hostility, but it remains unclear what drives this phenomenon. We propose that a tendency for individuals to form broad generalizations about groups on the basis of inconsistent evidence may be partly responsible. We study this tendency by measuring the interpretation, endorsement, and recall of category-referring statements, also known as generics (e.g., "Democrats favor affirmative action"). In study 1 (n = 417), perceived polarization was substantially greater than actual polarization. Further, participants endorsed generics as long as they were true more often of the target party (e.g., Democrats favor affirmative action) than of the opposing party (e.g., Republicans favor affirmative action), even when they believed such statements to be true for well below 50% of the relevant party. Study 2 (n = 928) found that upon receiving information from political elites, people tended to recall these statements as generic, regardless of whether the original statement was generic or not. Study 3 (n = 422) found that generic statements regarding new political information led to polarized judgments and did so more than nongeneric statements. Altogether, the data indicate a tendency toward holding mental representations of political claims that exaggerate party differences. Reversible hydrogen storage in the form of stable and mostly harmless chemical substances such as formic acid (FA) is a cornerstone of a fossil fuels‐free economy. In the past, we have reported a primary amine‐functionalized bifunctional iridium(III)‐PC(sp3)P pincer complex as a mild and chemoselective catalyst for the additive‐free decomposition of neat formic acid. In this manuscript, we report on the successful application of a redesigned complex bearing tertiary amine functionality as a catalyst for mild hydrogenation of CO2 to formic acid. The catalyst demonstrates TON up to 6×104 and TOF up to 1.7×104 h−1. In addition to the practical value of the catalyst, experimental and computational mechanistic studies provide the rationale for the design of improved next‐generation catalysts. Compartmental models that describe infectious disease transmission across subpopulations are central for assessing the impact of non-pharmaceutical interventions, behavioral changes and seasonal effects on the spread of respiratory infections. We present a Bayesian workflow for such models, including four features: (1) an adjustment for incomplete case ascertainment, (2) an adequate sampling distribution of laboratory-confirmed cases, (3) a flexible, time-varying transmission rate, and (4) a stratification by age group. Within the workflow, we benchmarked the performance of various implementations of two of these features (2 and 3). For the second feature, we used SARS-CoV-2 data from the canton of Geneva (Switzerland) and found that a quasi-Poisson distribution is the most suitable sampling distribution for describing the overdispersion in the observed laboratory-confirmed cases. For the third feature, we implemented three methods: Brownian motion, B-splines, and approximate Gaussian processes (aGP). We compared their performance in terms of the number of effective samples per second, and the error and sharpness in estimating the time-varying transmission rate over a selection of ordinary differential equation solvers and tuning parameters, using simulated seroprevalence and laboratory-confirmed case data. Even though all methods could recover the time-varying dynamics in the transmission rate accurately, we found that B-splines perform up to four and ten times faster than Brownian motion and aGPs, respectively. We validated the B-spline model with simulated age-stratified data. We applied this model to 2020 laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 cases and two seroprevalence studies from the canton of Geneva. This resulted in detailed estimates of the transmission rate over time and the case ascertainment. Our results illustrate the potential of the presented workflow including stratified transmission to estimate age-specific epidemiological parameters. The workflow is freely available in the R package HETTMO, and can be easily adapted and applied to other infectious diseases. These models can frequently be fitted to surveillance data such as the number of laboratory-confirmed cases and seroprevalence over time. We identified that in these situations, four crucial features are required for a model to provide insightful information for managing an epidemic. These features relate to the adjustment for incomplete case ascertainment, to the choice of sampling distribution, to the variation of transmission over time and to the stratification by age. For each feature, we identify and compare several implementation options on simulated data. This structural comparison of methods results in a Bayesian workflow that is optimized for modeling the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 over a short period. Abstract COVID-19 has revealed and intensified economic and health disparities, prompting a profound national and global examination of racist systems perpetuating such disadvantage. The historic confluence of COVID-19 with movements for social justice offers a window, which COVID fatigue may already be closing, for us to enact true change in the process and content of a graduate social work education. This moment calls for re-envisioned process and content that addresses issues of oppression, social justice, trauma, mental illness, and health. As social work educators with a specialization in trauma, we are thinking deeply about how to harness this juncture to shape a more rigorous and responsive social work educational process. We believe trauma-informed principles must be applied across the social work curriculum, beyond trauma-focused or clinical courses, and to our social work educational institutions. We offer examples of how we have revisioned social work training for ourselves and our students, from our multiple standpoints as faculty, administrator, and field advisor, for the complex challenges and opportunities of chronic syndemic times. With the increasing availability of commercial Artificial Intelligence, General Language Models (GLMs) have been widely explored in various domains, including law. However, to ensure accurate and standardized legal results, it is crucial to establish a consistent framework for prompting GLMs. This paper presents one of the first instances of such nomenclature, providing a robust framework of "variables" and "clauses" that enhances legal-focused results. The proposed framework was applied in diverse legal scenarios, demonstrating its potential from both client and attorney perspectives. By introducing standardized variables and clauses, legal professionals can effectively communicate with GLMs. This not only improves the accuracy of the generated outcomes but also facilitates collaboration between AI systems and legal experts. With a common framework in place, legal practitioners can leverage AI technology confidently, knowing that the results produced align with established legal principles. Furthermore, the framework serves as a foundation for future research in the field of legal prompting with GLMs, and several avenues for future research are recommended in this paper. Interindividual variation of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) RNA setpoint in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and its determinants are poorly understood, but relevant for HIV neuropathology, brain reservoirs, viral escape, and reseeding after antiretroviral interruptions. Longitudinal multicentric study on demographic, clinical, and laboratory correlates of CSF HIV RNA in 2000 follow‐up visits from 597 people with HIV (PWH) off antiretroviral therapy (ART) and with plasma HIV RNA > the lower limit of quantification (LLQ). Factors associated with CSF control (CSFC; CSF HIV RNA < LLQ while plasma HIV RNA > LLQ) and with CSF/plasma discordance (CSF > plasma HIV RNA > LLQ) were also assessed through mixed‐effects models. Posthoc and sensitivity analyses were performed for persistent CSFC and ART‐naïve participants, respectively. Over a median follow‐up of 2.1 years, CSF HIV RNA was associated with CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, CSF leukocytes, blood–brain barrier (BBB) integrity, biomarkers of iron and lipid metabolism, serum globulins, past exposure to lamivudine, and plasma HIV RNA (model p < 0.0001). CSFC (persistent in 7.7% over 3 years) and CSF/plasma discordance (persistent in <0.01% over 1 year) were variably associated with the same parameters (model p < 0.001). Sensitivity analyses confirmed most of the previous associations in participants never exposed to ART. Persistent CSFC was associated with higher CD4+ T‐cell count nadir (p < 0.001), lower serum globulins (p = 0.003), and lower CSF leukocytes (p < 0.001). Without ART, one in 13 PWH had persistently undetectable CSF HIV RNA, while persistent CSF/plasma discordance was extremely rare over years. As in other subfields of psychology, developmental science faces a long-standing problem of limited diversity in research participants. This issue especially raises concerns when researchers make unwarranted broad claims about their results, such as using generic language that implies that a finding is unvarying and applies across participants and contexts. Variation in editorial practices may contribute to the extent to which generic language is used or how much information is provided about participant demographics. The present study expands on an existing corpus of articles published in developmental psychology journals and examines the extent to which generic language differed by journal and sample characteristics (such as racial/ ethnic diversity or sample size). We observed widespread use of generic language: 73% of articles included at least one generic statement in article components that were coded (i.e. titles, highlights, and abstracts). However, differences across journals were observed: Articles published in Developmental Science and JECP (which require authors to include short research highlights) tended to have higher rates of generic language than articles published in Child Development and Developmental Psychology (which did not require highlights). Articles that fully reported sample race and ethnicity also included fewer generic statements to describe their results than articles with more incomplete reporting. We conclude by highlighting the importance of editorial policies in shaping scholarship, as well as challenges and opportunities for researchers to consider when reporting demographic information in a global field and clearly and accurately communicating the importance of research findings. In recent decades, multilevel regression and poststratification (MRP) has surged in popularity for population inference. However, the validity of the estimates can depend on details of the model, and there is currently little research on validation. We explore how leave‐one‐out cross validation (LOO) can be used to compare Bayesian models for MRP. We investigate two approximate calculations of LOO: Pareto smoothed importance sampling (PSIS‐LOO) and a survey‐weighted alternative (WTD‐PSIS‐LOO). Using two simulation designs, we examine how accurately these two criteria recover the correct ordering of model goodness at predicting population and small‐area estimands. Focusing first on variable selection, we find that neither PSIS‐LOO nor WTD‐PSIS‐LOO correctly recovers the models' order for an MRP population estimand, although both criteria correctly identify the best and worst model. When considering small‐area estimation, the best model differs for different small areas, highlighting the complexity of MRP validation. When considering different priors, the models' order seems slightly better at smaller‐area levels. These findings suggest that, while not terrible, PSIS‐LOO‐based ranking techniques may not be suitable to evaluate MRP as a method. We suggest this is due to the aggregation stage of MRP, where individual‐level prediction errors average out. We validate these results by applying to the real world National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data in the United States. Altogether, these results show that PSIS‐LOO‐based model validation tools need to be used with caution and might not convey the full story when validating MRP as a method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Drug-induced tremor is a common side effect of lithium with an occurrence of approximately 25% of patients. Cessation of the offending drug can be difficult, and many medical treatments for drug-induced tremor are ineffective. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has been shown in a limited number of case reports to effectively reduce drug-induced tremor, however, which remains an invasive therapeutic option. MR-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) thalamotomy is an FDA-approved non-invasive treatment for essential tremor (ET). To the best of our knowledge, MRgFUS thalamotomy has never been reported to treat druginduced tremor. Here, we present a case of a left-handed 55-year-old man with a progressive, medically refractory lithium-induced tremor of the bilateral upper extremities. The patient underwent MRgFUS thalamotomy targeting the right ventral intermediate nucleus (VIM) of the thalamus to treat the left hand. There was almost complete resolution of his left-hand tremor immediately following MRgFUS. There were no side effects. The patient continues to show excellent tremor control at 90-day follow-up and remains free from side effects. Gender‐nonconforming children face a substantial amount of prejudice, making it important to investigate potential contributing factors. In a correlational study of 253 U.S. Midwestern and Pacific Northwestern 6‐ to 10‐year‐old gender‐conforming children (Age M = 7.95, SD = 1.43; 54% girl, 46% boy; 77% White), we examined how gender essentialism (beliefs that gender is biological, discrete, informative, and immutable) and gender identity essentialism (beliefs that gender identity is immutable) relate to prejudice against gender‐nonconforming children. We also examined whether these associations varied by the child's cultural context (rural, non‐diverse, conservative vs. urban, more diverse, liberal). We found a positive correlation between gender essentialism and prejudice, in both cultural contexts. Additionally, children from the more rural context endorsed more essentialism and expressed more prejudice than did their counterparts from the more urban context. Despite effective antiretroviral therapies, 20–30% of persons with treated HIV infection develop a neurodegenerative syndrome termed HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND). HAND is driven by HIV expression coupled with inflammation in the brain but the mechanisms underlying neuronal damage and death are uncertain. The inflammasome-pyroptosis axis coordinates an inflammatory type of regulated lytic cell death that is underpinned by the caspase-activated pore-forming gasdermin proteins. The mechanisms driving neuronal pyroptosis were investigated herein in models of HAND, using multi-platform molecular and morphological approaches that included brain tissues from persons with HAND and simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV)-infected non-human primates as well as cultured human neurons. Neurons in the frontal cortices from persons with HAND showed increased cleaved gasdermin E (GSDME), which was associated with β-III tubulin degradation and increased HIV levels. Exposure of cultured human neurons to the HIV-encoded viral protein R (Vpr) elicited time-dependent cleavage of GSDME and Ninjurin-1 (NINJ1) induction with associated cell lysis that was inhibited by siRNA suppression of both proteins. Upstream of GSDME cleavage, Vpr exposure resulted in activation of caspases-1 and 3. Pretreatment of Vpr-exposed neurons with the caspase-1 inhibitor, VX-765, reduced cleavage of both caspase-3 and GSDME, resulting in diminished cell death. To validate these findings, we examined frontal cortical tissues from SIV-infected macaques, disclosing increased expression of GSDME and NINJ1 in cortical neurons, which was co-localized with caspase-3 detection in animals with neurological disease. Thus, HIV infection of the brain triggers the convergent activation of caspases-1 and -3, which results in GSDME-mediated neuronal pyroptosis in persons with HAND. These findings demonstrate a novel mechanism by which a viral infection causes pyroptotic death in neurons while also offering new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for HAND and other neurodegenerative disorders.
