This article addresses the concept and practice of liaison librarianship newly introduced in 2019 at the University Library of Freie Universität Berlin. Chances and challenges of library-faculty collaboration of two liaison librarians assigned to work with the Department of Earth Sciences and the Seminar of East Asian Studies, respectively, are discussed. The contribution seeks to give a stimulus for liaison librarianship in academic libraries and to connect to the well-established discourse on liaison librarianship in the Anglophone academic library world. The article discusses the role of German Americans in the establishment of an inclusive coalition in New Orleans, Louisiana which started when Louisiana state senator William Byrnes addressed an audience on January 18, 1915. Topics discussed include objective of Byrnes's speech which is to push neutrality, the German-American response to wartime transformations, and the coalition's goal to transcend boundaries of ethnic identity, gender, and class.

A correction to the article "Rohland, Eleonora: Changes in the Air. Hurricanes in New Orleans from 1718 to the Present, 252 S., Berghahn, Oxford/New York 2018" that was published in a previous issue of the periodical, is presented.

In response to an increasingly expressed need for factual information, a science-based information web portal, the Shale Gas Information Platform SHIP, was developed. At the core of the project is the shale gas expert network. It’s an international and interdisciplinary group composed of mainly scientists that share their specific knowledge with the public. With a strong focus on factual information, this initiative also strives to serve the scientific community as a publication and knowledge exchange platform. The article discusses the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers, which was involved in the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities in 2003. Technical aspects of open access electronic publishing are discussed with regard to the association, focusing on benefits for German researchers.

The chemical composition of the Bannock basin has been studied in some detail. We recently showed that unusual microbial populations, including a new division of Archaea (MSBL1), inhabit the NaCl-rich hypersaline brine. High salinities tend to reduce biodiversity, but when brines come into contact with fresher water the natural haloclines formed frequently contain gradients of other chemicals, including permutations of electron donors and acceptors, that may enhance microbial diversity, activity and biogeochemical cycling. Here we report a 2.5-m-thick chemocline with a steep NaCl gradient at 3.3 km within the water column betweeen Bannock anoxic hypersaline brine and overlying sea water. The chemocline supports some of the most biomass-rich and active microbial communities in the deep sea, dominated by Bacteria rather than Archaea, and including four major new divisions of Bacteria. Significantly higher metabolic activities were measured in the chemocline than in the overlying sea water and underlying brine; functional analyses indicate that a range of biological processes is likely to occur in the chemocline. Many prokaryotic taxa, including the phylogenetically new groups, were confined to defined salinities, and collectively formed a diverse, sharply stratified, deep-sea ecosystem with sufficient biomass to potentially contribute to organic geological deposits.
