We report on both the electrical and thermoelectric transport properties as a function of temperature in poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT)–poly(styrene sulfonate) conducting polymers for a wide range of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) additives. Whereas an insulating-like electrical behavior is found over the whole temperature range, a metallic-like thermopower is mainly observed. We show that the resistivity appears to be governed by a three-dimensional variable range hopping mechanism due to disordered regions with a decreasing localization temperature T 0 and an increasing scaling factor ρ 0 as a function of the DMSO ratio. The correlation between T 0 and ρ 0 demonstrates that they are both controlled by the localization length ξ 0 , which is strongly enhanced by the DMSO in agreement with the morphological evolution of the PEDOT chains with the additive. On the other hand, the high-T positive metallic-like thermopower seems rather unaffected by the additive in contrast to its low-T counterpart, which appears negative below a characteristic temperature T s w i t c h . By showing that the latter is closely related to the localization temperature, we propose to ascribe this sign switch to the thermoelectric contribution originating from disordered regions, which competes with the metallic ones due to ordered domains. While still controlled by the localization temperature, this negative contribution appears to be consistent with a phonon-drag component with a scaling behavior as T 0 T − 3 . These analyses allow us to discuss the overall temperature dependent thermoelectric properties in a consistent way by considering a heterogeneous structure with both ordered and disordered domains. By relating explicitly the electrical resistivity to the thermopower, our results do not only reconcile these transport coefficients, but they also provide a unified picture of the properties of the conducting polymers. Despite the widespread applications of high-pressure plasma in semiconductor and display industry, such as deposition and ashing process, the use of cutoff probes for diagnosing high-pressure plasma was rarely studied. In this study, we investigated a method of measuring electron density in a cutoff probe using the resonance peak in a high-pressure plasma environment. This method is validated through both electromagnetic wave simulations and experimental methodologies. Our findings reveal that the proposed method demonstrates discrepancies of less than 1.47% compared to the input plasma frequency in the results of electromagnetic wave simulations at a gas pressure of 10 mTorr, while at 2.5 Torr, it exhibited a maximum discrepancy of 13.3% when selecting resonance frequencies lower than the electron–neutral collision frequency. This discrepancy at high pressure is reduced to within 1.92% by selecting a resonance frequency higher than the electron–neutral collision frequency. Also, the feasibility of these electron density measurements has been confirmed under conditions of high gas pressure where the cutoff frequency is not measurable, as evidenced by both simulation and experimental results. Our research on the diagnostic methods in high-pressure plasmas could significantly enhance the measurement and interpretation of plasma parameters in various industrial processes. This study adopts the athletic career transition model to explore the experiences of Korean dual-career (DC) judokas during their junior-to-senior transition using a longitudinal approach. We recruited 12 Korean elite judokas, all of whom were in their first year of university during their initial interview. Participants were organized into three focus groups, with three rounds of interviews conducted over approximately 2 years, totaling nine focus-group sessions. Thematic analysis was applied, which led to the identification of three key themes: (a) multifaceted challenges, (b) coping strategies, and (c) perceived needs of DC athletes prioritizing sport over study. The results indicate that Korean DC judokas share some common challenges (e.g., increased training demands, balancing their studies with training demands) with their European counterparts, but they also face unique challenges (e.g., managing weight control, laundry duties, and relationships with senior judokas) specific to the Korean judokas. Their coping strategies include both internal resources (e.g., focusing on performance target, utilizing resilience) and external ones (e.g., seeking social support), emphasizing the critical role of psychological support during their junior-to-senior transition. Proactive psychological support is recommended through a specialized system tailored to this group. In this study, we investigate the excess volume (VE) of 24 binary miscible and compound alloy melts using electrostatic levitation. Notably, Pd50X50 (X = Fe, Co, and Ni) and Pt50Fe50 solid solutions with slightly negative or zero mixing enthalpy (ΔHmix) display pronounced positive VE and significantly improved liquid stability after alloying, whereas compound alloy liquids with negative ΔHmix exhibit negative VE. Moreover, the VE of Pd50X50 and Pt50X50 consistently decreases with the increasing number of electrons in X, indicating a magneto-volume effect observed in specific heat measurements. In thin film deposition, Ar/SiH4 mixtures are widely used to make polysilicon (poly-Si) and hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-SiH) layers. Despite extensive research conducted on this mixture, little research has focused on the variations in plasma properties, radicals, and ions that occur during plasma discharge in inductively coupled plasma (ICP) equipment compared to capacitive coupled plasma equipment. In this paper, we investigate the properties of the plasma generated through mathematical modeling of Ar/SiH4 inductive coupled plasma discharge by using the electron energy distribution function (EEDF) obtained by solving the Boltzmann equation. We closely examine the variation in plasma properties and the correlation of plasma variables by controlling the radio frequency power and gas pressure during the process conditions. The Boltzmann equation was computed by assuming the two-term approximation, resulting in a Druyvesteyn-like EEDF due to the high-pressure conditions. To validate the simulation model, the 2D simulation results were compared with probe measurements performed in a two-turn ICP chamber. The results demonstrated encouraging agreement with the measured data. This research not only enhances our comprehension of the discharge characteristics but also establishes a framework for optimizing the discharge conditions to enhance the process and effectively regulate external variables. In this study, we examined the potential errors in plasma-density measurements using the cutoff probe method under various structural conditions, such as tip distance and length. Our studies indicate that under conditions of thin sheath thickness, the length or distance of the metal tips on the cutoff probe has a slight effect on the plasma transmission spectrum or cutoff frequency. However, under conditions with a notably thick sheath, the structure of the probe tip can cause an error of up to 2% between the measured cutoff frequency and actual plasma frequency. Consequently, for precise measurements of plasma density using the cutoff probe method, it is imperative to maintain a probe tip distance exceeding five times the sheath width and utilize a sufficiently long probe tip length. This finding is anticipated to provide essential guidelines for the design and fabrication of effective cutoff probes and enhance the accuracy of plasma-density measurements using a cutoff probe. In this study, the influence of ceramic shield characteristics, including thickness and geometry, on the transmission spectrum and electron density measurements of a ceramic shield cutoff probe (CSC) was investigated to measure high-density or process plasma. Through electromagnetic simulations and circuit modeling, we examined the measurement characteristics of the CSC based on different ceramic shield geometries. When the ceramic shield is sufficiently thin, it does not affect the CSC wave transmission characteristics. However, for a thick ceramic shield, a cutoff frequency shift of up to 3% toward the lower side can occur. This shift is attributed to the electrical properties of the ceramic material, which can function as a parasitic capacitor. In addition, when fabricating a CSC, depending on the shape of the ceramic shield or the method used to couple it with the CSC body, a cutoff frequency shift can occur toward the lower side. The simulation results were validated through experiments, revealing a cutoff frequency shift toward the lower side of up to 18.0% in the simulations and up to 11.6% in the experiments. This study investigates the antimalarial potential of extracts and compounds from various plants used in traditional Korean medicine, in response to the increasing resistance of Plasmodium falciparum to standard treatments such as chloroquine and artemisinin. The antimalarial activity screening was conducted on 151 extracts, identifying the top seven candidates, including Geranium thunbergii (50% ethanol and 100% methanol extract), Reynoutria japonica, Amomum villosum (hot water and 50% ethanol extract), Cinnamomum zeylanicum, and Platycodon grandiflorum. Among these, G. thunbergii was identified as the top priority for further analysis due to its high antimalarial activity and high yield of bioactive compounds. The plant extracts were fractionated using ethyl acetate, chloroform, and hot water, and their efficacy against P. falciparum was evaluated through IC50 determination and microscopic analysis. The compounds evaluated included ellagic acid, gallic acid, afzelin, quercetin, and protocatechuic acid. Among the tested compounds, ellagic acid showed the most potent antimalarial activity with an IC50 of 1.60 ± 0.09 µM, followed by gallic acid (39.43 ± 1.48 µM) and afzelin (52.77 ± 1.84 µM). In contrast, quercetin (116.8 ± 3.78 µM) and protocatechuic acid (1.23 ± 0.02 mM) exhibited minimal antimalarial effects. Giemsa staining was employed to visualize parasite morphology and confirmed that ellagic acid is effective in inhibiting growth at the late trophozoite stage. These findings suggest that ellagic acid could serve as a promising lead compound for developing a novel antimalarial agent. This study highlights the importance of exploring plant-based compounds as alternative strategies against drug-resistant malaria. Although pancreatic cancer presents with one of the most unfavorable prognoses, its treatment options are very limited. Mitochondria-targeting moieties, considered a new and prominent treatment modality, are expected to demonstrate synergistic anticancer effects due to their distinct mechanism compared to conventional chemotherapeutic approaches. This study evaluated the therapeutic potential of mitochondria-accumulating self-assembly peptides, referred to as Mito-FFs, utilizing both in vitro and in vivo pancreatic cancer models. Cellular viability assays revealed a concentration-dependent decrease in the survival of MIA-PACA2 pancreatic cancer cells upon exposure to Mito-FF treatment (p < 0.05). Subsequent in vitro Mito-FF treatments prompted the use of several molecular analyses, including Real-time PCR, Western blot analysis, and MitoSOX staining, which collectively indicated an upsurge in apoptosis, a concurrent reduction in the antioxidant enzyme expression, and an elevation in mitochondrial ROS levels (p < 0.05). In a murine xenograft model of pancreatic cancer, the intravenous administration of Mito-FF yielded a notable reduction in the tumor volume. Moreover, it upregulated the expression of pro-apoptotic markers, such as cleaved PARP and c-caspase 3, while concurrently downregulating the expression of an anti-apoptotic marker, MCL-1, as evidenced by both Western blot analysis and immunohistochemical staining (p < 0.05). It also resulted in the reduced expression of antioxidant enzymes like HO-1, catalase, and SOD2 within excised tumor tissues, as confirmed using Western blot analysis (p < 0.05). Cumulatively, the findings underscore the significant anticancer efficacy of Mito-FF against pancreatic cancer cells, predominantly mediated through the induction of apoptosis, suppression of antioxidant enzyme expression, and enhancement of mitochondrial ROS levels within the tumor microenvironment. Simple Summary: This retrospective study investigated lipid metabolism alterations in 65 dogs with hyperlipidemia using lipoprotein electrophoresis (LPE). The analysis revealed that dogs with biliary tract diseases or underlying metabolic disorders, such as endocrine diseases, exhibited higher pre-beta fractions and cholesterol concentrations compared to non-hyperlipidemic dogs. Significant linear relationships were identified between serum gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) levels and both pre-beta fractions and cholesterol concentrations, highlighting the impact of biliary tract dysfunction on lipid metabolism. Additionally, Miniature Schnauzers, a breed predisposed to hyperlipidemia, showed distinct lipid profile abnormalities, including reduced alpha fractions and elevated triglyceride and cholesterol levels. These findings highlight the clinical relevance of LPE as a useful tool for identifying lipid metabolism abnormalities and monitoring disease-related changes. Veterinary practitioners should consider altered lipid metabolism, including specific ratios such as the GGT/ALT and GGT/ALP ratios, as potential indicators of biliary tract or endocrine diseases when evaluating hyperlipidemic patients in small animal practice. This retrospective study aimed to analyze variations in lipoprotein electrophoresis (LPE) profiles in hyperlipidemic dogs and investigate the associations between biliary tract diseases, endocrine disorders, and lipid metabolism. Sixty-five dogs that underwent LPE were classified into non-hyperlipidemic (NHL) and hyperlipidemic (HL) groups, with further subdivisions based on the presence of biliary tract disease, endocrine disorders, or breed predisposition (Miniature Schnauzers). Dogs in the HL group with biliary tract disease and those with underlying metabolic disorders exhibited significantly higher pre-beta fractions and cholesterol concentrations compared to the NHL group. Additionally, significant linear relationships were observed between serum gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) levels and both pre-beta fractions and cholesterol concentrations. The Schnauzer group showed lower alpha fractions and higher triglyceride and cholesterol levels than the NHL group. These findings suggest that LPE is a valuable and useful tool for detecting lipid metabolism abnormalities. Background: Congenital anomalies (CAs) encompass a wide spectrum of structural and functional abnormalities during fetal development, commonly presenting at birth. Identifying the cause of CA is essential for accurate diagnosis and treatment. Using a target-gene approach, genetic variants could be found in certain CA patients. However, some patients were genetically undiagnosed; therefore, it is imperative to identify the causative variants from whole genome sequence (WGS) data of these patients. Results: An in-house pipeline utilizing DRAGEN-GATK-Hail was established for trio-based WGS data analysis (n = 18 undiagnosed CA patients and their parents) and thirty-five candidate variants, including SNV/Indel, CNV, and SV were identified. Among them, 10 variants of seven coding genes were selected as possible causal variants by variant pathogenicity, genotype–phenotype analysis, and a multidisciplinary team. Finally, functional validation of six genes including RYR3, NRXN1, FREM2, CSMD1, RARS1, and NOTCH1, revealed various phenotypes in zebrafish models that aligned with those observed in each patient. In addition to the above findings, eleven diagnostic variants initially discovered in a targeted-gene analysis from a previous study were also identified as diagnostic variants and the in-house pipeline demonstrated a significant advantage in accurately and efficiently identifying de novo variants (DNVs), compound heterozygous (CH), and homozygous variants. Conclusions: Taken together, the in-house pipeline established in this study provides a highly valuable diagnostic tool for the identification of potential candidate variants in patients with CA. Further research into the molecular mechanisms related to the development of CAs could shed light on the functional aspects of these genetic variations and contribute to the development of therapeutic drugs. Background/Objectives: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease that significantly impacts physical and emotional health. Statins, primarily used as lipid-lowering drugs, have also demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects. While some studies suggest that statins may improve psoriasis symptoms, the findings have been inconsistent. This study aims to investigate the association between prior statin use and the onset of psoriasis in a Korean population, focusing on individuals with dyslipidemia to minimize confounding factors. Methods: Using the Korean Health Insurance database (2002–2019), a nationwide nested case-control study was conducted, enrolling 8285 participants with psoriasis and 33,140 controls, matched 1:4 for sex, age, residence, and income through propensity scoring. Results: Adjusted odds ratios revealed significantly lower risks of psoriasis among short-term statin users (OR = 0.70, 95% CI = 0.66–0.74) and long-term users (OR = 0.77, 95% CI = 0.73–0.82) than in nonusers. This trend was consistent for both lipophilic and hydrophilic statins, and across subgroup analyses. Conclusions: These findings suggest that statins may reduce the incidence of psoriasis. Background/Aim: Regulatory T cells (Tregs) play a crucial role in inflammatory responses by regulating the activity of various immune cells. M2 macrophages induced by IL-10 and TGF-ß exhibit anti-inflammatory functions and induce Treg differentiation. Although the beneficial effects of 3-bromo-4,5-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (BDB) on various diseases have been widely reported, the mechanisms, through which it alleviates allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) via Tregs and macrophages, are not well understood. Therefore, this study aimed to explore whether BDB suppresses ACD and induces Treg generation. Materials and Methods: Mice were sensitized with 1% dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB), followed by the application of 0.3% DNCB to their ears every 3 days for 31 days. BDB (100 mg/kg) was administered orally once daily throughout the 31 days. Cytokine and transcription factor expression were analyzed via real-time PCR and western blotting, while CD4+Foxp3+ T cell differentiation and T cell proliferation were evaluated using flow cytometry. Results: BDB exhibited therapeutic efficacy in mice with ACD. In this study, the administration of BDB promoted the upregulation of transforming growth factor beta (TGF-ß)-dependent CD4+Foxp3+ T cells. BDB elicited T cell hypo-responsiveness and suppressed the expression of cytokines related to the Th1, Th2, and Th17 cell subsets. BDB-M2 macrophages directly mediated the differentiation of CD4+Foxp3+ T cells from CD4+ T cells and concurrently suppressed the proliferation of CD4+ T cells. Conclusion: BDB augments M2 macrophage function and induction of Tregs confers effective protection against ACD in mice. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) presents significant clinical challenges, highlighting the importance of understanding its molecular mechanisms. While store-operated Ca2+ entry (SOCE) is known to play an essential role in tumorigenesis and metastasis, its specific implications across various RCC subtypes remain underexplored. This study analyzed SOCE-related mRNA profiles from the KIRC and KIRP projects in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database, focusing on differential gene expression and overall survival outcomes. Functional studies in clear cell RCC (Caki-1) and papillary RCC cell lines (pRCC, Caki-2) revealed increased expression of Orai1 and Orai3, along with STIM1, exhibited in both subtypes, with decreased STIM2 and increased Orai2 expression in pRCC. Notably, Orai3 expression had a gender-specific impact on survival, particularly in females with pRCC, where it inversely correlated with STIM2 expression. Functional assays showed Orai3 dominance in Caki-2 and Orai1 in Caki-1. Interestingly, 2-APB inhibited SOCE in Caki-1 but enhanced it in Caki-2, suggesting Orai3 as the primary SOCE channel in pRCC. Knockdown of Orai1 and Orai3 reduced cell migration and proliferation via regulating focal adhesion kinase (FAK) and Cyclin D1 in both cell lines. These findings highlight the critical roles of Orai1 and Orai3 in RCC metastasis, with Orai3 linked to poorer prognosis in females with pRCC. Purpose: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) has been an important method of treatment in the advance of pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The indications for HSCT are evolving and require updated establishment. In this study, we aimed to investigate the efficacy of HSCT on the treatment outcome of pediatric ALL, considering the indications for HSCT and subgroups. Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on ALL patients diagnosed and treated at a single center. Risk groups were categorized based on age at diagnosis, initial white blood cell count, disease lineage (B/T), and cytogenetic study results. Data on the patients' disease status at HSCT and indications of HSCT were collected. Indications for HSCT were categorized as upfront HSCT at 1st complete remission, relapse, and refractory disease. Results: Among the 549 screened patients, a total of 418 patients were included in the study; B-cell ALL (n=379) and T-cell ALL (T-ALL) (n=39). HSCT was conducted on a total of 106 patients (25.4%), with a higher frequency as upfront HSCT in higher-risk groups and specific cytogenetics. The overall survival (OS) was significantly better when done upfront than in relapsed or refractory state in T-ALL patients (p=0.002). The KMT2A-rearranged ALL patients showed superior event-free survival (p=0.002) and OS (p=0.022) when HSCT was done as upfront treatment. Conclusion: HSCT had a substantial positive effect in a specific subset of pediatric ALL. In particular, frontline HSCT for T-ALL and KMT2A-rearranged ALL offered a better prognosis than when HSCT was conducted in a relapsed or refractory setting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The escalating prevalence of diabetes underscores the need for precise diagnostic tools to facilitate effective management. Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is a crucial biomarker for long-term glycemic control in diabetic patients. Point-of-care testing (POCT) for HbA1c offers rapid, accessible alternatives to conventional laboratory methods, but uncertainties persist regarding the accuracy and reliability of POCT assays. Methods: This study evaluates the analytical performance of two boronate-affinity based HbA1c POCT assays, the GreenCare A1c and Cera-Stat HbA1c. Various analytical parameters including precision, linearity, comparison, and accuracy are assessed following guidelines from Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI), with results applied to certification criteria from the National Glycohemoglobin Standardization Program (NGSP) and International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC). Furthermore, 52 and 13 frozen EDTA whole blood samples were respectively used for additional evaluation of accuracy and interference due to Hb variants for the GreenCare A1c assay. Results: Both GreenCare and Cera-Stat demonstrated good precision (repeatability CV% 1.5-1.9 and total imprecision CV% 1.6–2.2), linearity (R2 = 0.9996 & 0.9990), and correlation (r = 0.982 & 0.978) with an established HbA1c analyzer, the Bio-Rad D100. The GreenCare also exhibited good accuracy with frozen EDTA samples with known HbA1c values. Both assays met the certification criteria from NGSP and IFCC, classifying them as "standard" according to IFCC model for quality targets for HbA1c. Conclusions: This evaluation affirms the reliability of GreenCare and Cera-Stat POCT assays for HbA1c measurements, which can potentially reduce unnecessary referrals and enhance the overall quality of diabetes diagnosis and treatment. Chronic inflammation is persistent disease caused by unregulated activation of Nf-kb pathway and production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, induced by accumulation of reactive oxygen species above thresholds. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the anti-oxidant, anti-lipidemia, inhibition Nf-kb pathway, and reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokine activities of Ixeris dentata extract (IDE) to demonstrate its inhibitory ability against chronic inflammatory in RAW264.7. Polyphenol content, radical scavenging activity, and lipase activity inhibition of IDE were 9.2 ± 0.2 GAE mg/g dry matter, 84.7%, and 72.4%, respectively, showing high effects against anti-oxidant and lipolysis inhibitory. Furthermore, anti-inflammatory effects of IDE on LPS-induced RAW 264.7 were investigated, and expression of inflammatory genes such as Cox-2, Inos, Tnf-α, Il-6, Nf-kb, and Il-1β were decreased by 36.5%–83.4%. Studies have confirmed that IDE has excellent antioxidant, lipolysis inhibitory, and anti-inflammatory effects, and Ixeris dentata can be used as natural ingredients for food and medicine to prevent. In breast-conserving surgery (BCS), clear resection margins are crucial to prevent recurrence. Accurate imaging is vital for precise BCS, with MRI being the most accurate. However, MRI has limitations in identifying the exact extent of breast cancer in patients who have undergone neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT). A 3D-Printed Breast Surgical Guide (3DP-BSG) can address this issue by effectively pinpointing cancer extent in NACT patients, thus enhancing surgical accuracy. This retrospective single-institution cohort study focused on female patients diagnosed with invasive breast cancer who underwent NACT. Between November 2015 and October 2021, patients received BCS with the aid of a 3DP-BSG. Personalized 3DP-BSG targeted tumors by tracking changes in breast and tumor anatomy on MRI before and after NACT. 203 patients with invasive breast cancer were enrolled in the study. According to exclusion criteria, 197 patients were analyzed. The median follow-up period was 35.3 months (range: 2.2–96.8 months). 3 patients (1.5%) had positive resection margins. During the follow-up period, 17 patients (8.6%) experienced recurrence, with one patient (0.5%) confirmed local recurrences. Purpose: In this study, we investigated the effect of bisphenol-A (BPA) and its major analogs, bisphenol-F (BPF), and bisphenol- S (BPS), on spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) populations using in vitro SSC culture and in vivo transplantation models. Materials and Methods: SSCs enriched from 6- to 8-day-old C57BL/6-eGFP+ male mice testes were treated with varying concentrations of bisphenols for 7 days to examine bisphenol-derived cytotoxicity and changes in SSC characteristics. We utilized flow cytometry, immunocytochemistry, real-time quantitative reverse transcription-PCR, and western blot analysis. The functional alteration of SSCs was further investigated by examining donor SSC-derived spermatogenesis evaluation through in vivo transplantation and subsequent testis analysis. Results: BPF exhibited a similar inhibitory effect on SSCs as BPA, demonstrating a significant decrease in SSC survival, inhibition of proliferation, and induction of apoptosis. On the other hand, while BPS was comparatively weaker than BPA and BPF, it still showed significant SSC cytotoxicity. Importantly, SSCs exposed to BPA, BPF, and BPS exhibited a significant reduction in donor SSC-derived germ cell colonies per total number of cultured cells, indicating that, like BPA, BPF, and BPS can induce a comparable reduction in functional SSCs in the recipient animals. However, the progress of spermatogenesis, as evidenced by histochemistry and the expressions of PCNA and SSC specific markers, collectively indicates that BPA, BPF, and BPS may not adversely affect the spermatogenesis. Conclusions: Our findings indicate that the major BPA substitutes, BPF and BPS, have significant cytotoxic effects on SSCs, similar to BPA. Introduction: This study aimed to compare the differences in the radiological, clinical, and functional outcomes and the estimated restoration rate of native knee alignment between total knee arthroplasty (TKA) with bi-cruciate stabilized (BCS) and posterior stabilized (PS) design. Materials and methods: This retrospective study included consecutive patients between 2020 and 2021 who underwent TKA. The patients were divided into two groups (group I, Journey II BCS TKA [106 knees]; group II, Persona PS TKA [106 knees]) after 1:1 propensity score matching. We assessed the radiologic parameters in the coronal (constitutional hip-knee-ankle angle [aHKA] and joint line obliquity [JLO]), sagittal, and axial planes. The femoral roll-back, clinical, and functional outcomes were evaluated. The joint perception was evaluated using the forgotten joint score (FJS). Results: Group I had a higher restoration rate of aHKA and JLO postoperatively (P = 0.039 and P < 0.001). The changes in the patella tendon angle, posterior overhang of the femur, patella tilt angle, and patella lateral shift in group II were larger than those in group I (P < 0.001). Group I was superior in the range of motion (ROM) (P = 0.004), femoral roll-back (P < 0.001), and FJS (P = 0.021). Conclusions: BCS TKA demonstrated better restoration of native knee alignments, including constitutional coronal knee alignment and native sagittal knee alignment, and lesser patella lateral shift than conventional PS TKA. In addition, BCS TKA was superior in ROM, femoral roll-back, and joint perception, which were associated with the degree of restoration of constitutional coronal knee alignment. Texture analysis generates image parameters from F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG PET/CT). Although some parameters correlate with tumor biology and clinical attributes, their types and implications can be complex. To overcome this limitation, pseudotime analysis was applied to texture parameters to estimate changes in individual sample characteristics, and the prognostic significance of the estimated pseudotime of primary tumors was evaluated. Our subjects were 224 rectal cancer patients who underwent pretherapeutic FDG PET/CT and neoadjuvant concurrent chemoradiation therapy (CCRT). Texture parameters of the primary tumor were extracted from FDG PET/CT images acquired before neoadjuvant CCRT. The pseudotime of the primary tumor was successfully derived from texture parameters using the Phenopath tool. Clinico-pathologic features were obtained and survival analysis was performed. Pseudotime, metabolic tumor volume (MTV), and total lesion glycolysis (TLG) demonstrated significant associations with overall survival. Unlike MTV and TLG, pseudotime was an independent prognostic factor for overall survival (hazard ratio = 4.807, p-value = 0.037). Pseudotime analysis integrates various metabolic texture parameters into a single metric. Pseudotime estimated from FDG PET/CT images of primary tumors shows superior prognostic significance to conventional PET parameters in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer treated with tri-modality therapy. Background: Despite their ability to regenerate as well as autografts, the use of nerve allografts is limited by the need for immunosuppression and the risk of disease transmission. Further, decellularized allografts lacking Schwann cells limit axonal regeneration in long nerve defects. This study evaluated sciatic nerve regeneration in rats implanted with cold- or cryopreserved allografts, and examined the effects of FK506, an immunosuppressant that targets calcineurin function, on motor recovery. Methods: Sixty-five male Lewis rats were divided into five groups of 13, each with a 10-mm sciatic nerve gap. Group I received an autograft, whereas Groups II and III received allografts pretreated with cryopreservation and cold preservation, respectively. Groups IV and V were also implanted with cryo- and cold-preserved allografts, but were treated with a low dose of FK506. Motor regeneration was assessed at 20 weeks by the measurement of ankle contracture, compound muscle action potential, maximal isometric tetanic force, wet muscle weight of the tibialis anterior, peroneal nerve histomorphometry, and immunohistochemistry of the reconstructed sciatic nerve. Results: Similar motor recovery was observed between the autografts and both types of allografts. The groups treated with FK506 showed improved recovery, particularly in terms of ankle angle and tibialis anterior muscle weight. Histomorphometry revealed a superior myelinated fiber area and nerve ratio in the cold-preserved allograft group, while Group II displayed a less well-organized morphology. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that cold- or cryopreserved nerve allografts represent effective alternatives to autografts for peripheral nerve reconstruction, with low-dose FK506 enhancing motor recovery without necessitating immunosuppression. Rho guanine nucleotide dissociation inhibitor 1 (RhoGDI1) plays a critical role in regulating the activity of Rho guanosine triphosphatases (GTPases). Phosphorylation of RhoGDI1 dynamically modulates the activation of Rho GTPases, influencing cell proliferation and migration. This study explored the involvement of Never In Mitosis A (NIMA)-related serine/threonine protein kinase 2 (NEK2) in phosphorylating RhoGDI1 and its implications in cancer cell behavior associated with tumor progression. We employed GST pull-down assays and immunoprecipitation to investigate the interaction between NEK2 and RhoGDI1. Truncation fragments identified the region of RhoGDI1 responsible for binding with NEK2. Phosphorylation assays determined the site of NEK2-mediated phosphorylation on RhoGDI1. Functional assays were conducted using overexpression of the RhoGDI1 substitution mutant to assess their impact on cancer cell behavior. NEK2 directly bound to RhoGDI1 and phosphorylated it at Ser174. This phosphorylation event facilitated cancer cell proliferation and motility by activating RhoA and Rac1. The RhoGDI1 aa 112–134 region was critical for the binding to NEK2. Disruption of the NEK2–RhoGDI1 interaction through overexpression of a RhoGDI1 truncated fragment (aa 112–134) led to diminished RhoGDI1 phosphorylation and RhoA/Rac1 activation induced by NEK2, resulting in reduced cancer cell proliferation and migration. Moreover, in vivo studies showed reduced tumor growth and lung metastasis when the NEK2–RhoGDI1 interaction was disrupted. Background: Secondary lymphedema is a progressive condition caused by lipid- and protein-rich interstitial fluid accumulation resulting from compromised lymphatic function. It commonly occurs in cancer patients following surgical lymph node ablation and radiation treatment. This study aims to elucidate the effects of exercise on the myokine interleukin (IL)-6 and the molecular changes involved in lymphangiogenesis and extracellular matrix (ECM) synthesis using a lymphedema mouse model. Methods and results: We induced lymphedema in male ICR mice by excising the inguinal, popliteal, and iliac lymph nodes and occluding the femoral lymphatic vessel in the right hind leg. We then conducted a time course analysis of swelling and targeted gene expression analysis of the affected leg tissue. We began the mice on involuntary wheel running exercise 2 days post-surgery. Over the subsequent 2 weeks, the swelling initially increased and then gradually declined. In contrast, the genes associated with lymphangiogenesis and ECM synthesis showed progressive upregulation, even after the swelling had subsided. Exercise reduced limb swelling and increased the genetic expression of IL-6 and key lymphangiogenesis markers, including Prox1, VEGF-C, VEGFR-3, and LYVE-1, in the affected limb. Exercise also increased the expression of FABP4 and αSMA, which are markers of active adipocytes and fibroblasts. Conclusions: Our results suggest that exercise reduces lymphedema by promoting lymphangiogenesis and ECM synthesis, facilitating recovery. Simple Summary: The use of male semen is critical in pig breeding. For meat production, three-way crossbred Yorkshire × Landrace × Duroc (YLD) has commonly been used; however, reproductive data on the outcomes of crossbreeding between purebred males and crossbred females in pigs remain lacking. Therefore, we compared the fertility of Duroc sperm (DS) and Landrace sperm (LS) when used for the fertilization of YLD oocytes. The cleavage of DS and LS was similar in fertilized oocytes; however, the blastocyst rate was increased by LS. Moreover, our findings confirmed that the expression of genes associated with pluripotency, antioxidant enzymes, and cell cycle was upregulated in embryos fertilized with LS. These results suggest that LS improves the fertilization rate in three-way crossbred YLD female pigs. Pig production through crossbreeding methods is a pillar of the swine industry; however, research on the fertilization ability of male pigs in crossbreeds is lacking. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of Duroc sperm (DS) and Landrace sperm (LS) on fertility in Yorkshire × Landrace × Duroc (YLD) oocytes. Sperm were collected from the Duroc and Landrace species, and sperm characteristics, viability, and acrosome reactions were analyzed using flow cytometry. Oocytes were collected from YLD ovaries, and the fertility of DS and LS was determined using in vitro fertilization (IVF). Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidative abilities were analyzed using H2DCFDA and a Cell Tracker Red assay. Pluripotency (OCT4, SOX2, and NANOG), antioxidative (SOD1, SOD2, CAT, and GPx1), apoptotic (Bax and Bcl-2), and cell cycle-related (Cdc2 and CCNB1) genes were detected using quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) in oocytes fertilized with sperm. The results showed no significant difference in viability or acrosome reaction between DS and LS. ROS levels were significantly lower in the LS group than in the DS group, whereas glutathione (GSH) levels in the embryo did not significantly differ between the DS and LS groups. The OCT4, GPx1, and Cdc2 mRNA expression levels were significantly higher in the LS than DS groups. Blastocyst formation was significantly higher in the LS than DS groups. ROS levels were reduced, and blastocyte formation was increased in LS-obtained embryos. Introduction: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) alters the gut microbiome. This study aimed to assess the association between the disease severity of COVID-19 and changes in stool microbes through a seven-month follow-up of stool collection. Methods: We conducted a multicentre, prospective longitudinal study of 58 COVID-19 patients and 116 uninfected controls. Differences in the gut microbiota were analysed using 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing. The first stool samples were collected at an early convalescent phase of COVID-19, and the second sample was collected at least seven months after COVID-19 infection. Results and discussion: At the order level, Eubacteriales and Bifidobacteriales decreased, while Bacteroidales and Burkholderiales increased in the COVID-19 group compared to the controls. Alpha diversity also decreased in COVID-19 patients compared to controls, with imperfect recovery of the gut microbiome after seven months. The compositional change in the gut microbiome between the early and late convalescent phases was largest in the moderate and severe groups. The severity of COVID-19 was the most influential clinical variable for microbiome composition (Sum of Sqs = 0.686, P = 0.006), and its effect persisted even after partialling out other effects such as antibiotic use and age. Thus, our study indicates a possible interaction between respiratory viral infection and the composition of the gut microbiota community, warranting future mechanistic and prospective longitudinal studies. Additionally, we were able to detect microbiome changes in patients who were re-infected with SARS-CoV-2. Background: The study of the human microbiome is crucial for understanding disease mechanisms, identifying biomarkers, and guiding preventive measures. Advances in sequencing platforms, particularly 16S rRNA sequencing, have revolutionized microbiome research. Despite the benefits, large microbiome reference databases (DBs) pose challenges, including computational demands and potential inaccuracies. This study aimed to determine if full-length 16S rRNA sequencing data produced by PacBio could be used to optimize reference DBs and be applied to Illumina V3-V4 targeted sequencing data for microbial study. Methods: Oral and gut microbiome data (PRJNA1049979) were retrieved from NCBI. DADA2 was applied to full-length 16S rRNA PacBio data to obtain amplicon sequencing variants (ASVs). The RDP reference DB was used to assign the ASVs, which were then used as a reference DB to train the classifier. QIIME2 was used for V3-V4 targeted Illumina data analysis. BLAST was used to analyze alignment statistics. Linear discriminant analysis Effect Size (LEfSe) was employed for discriminant analysis. Results: ASVs produced by PacBio showed coverage of the oral microbiome similar to the Human Oral Microbiome Database. A phylogenetic tree was trimmed at various thresholds to obtain an optimized reference DB. This established method was then applied to gut microbiome data, and the optimized gut microbiome reference DB provided improved taxa classification and biomarker discovery efficiency. Conclusion: Full-length 16S rRNA sequencing data produced by PacBio can be used to construct a microbiome reference DB. Background: Liver fibrosis is a common outcome of chronic liver disease and is primarily driven by hepatic stellate cell (HSC) activation. Irisin, a myokine released during physical exercise, is beneficial for metabolic disorders and mitochondrial dysfunction. This study aimed to explore the effects of irisin on liver fibrosis in HSCs, a bile duct ligation (BDL) mouse model, and the associated mitochondrial dysfunction. Methods: In vitro experiments utilized LX-2 cells, a human HSC line, stimulated with transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), a major regulator of HSC fibrosis, with or without irisin. Mitochondrial function was assessed using mitochondrial fission markers, transmission electron microscopy, mitochondrial membrane potential, and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production. In vivo, liver fibrosis was induced in mice via BDL, followed by daily intraperitoneal injections of irisin (100 µg/kg/day) for 10 days. Results: In vitro, irisin mitigated HSC activation and reduced reactive oxygen species associated with the TGF-β1/Smad signaling pathway. Irisin restored TGF-β1-induced increases in fission markers (Fis1, p-DRP1) and reversed the decreased expression of TFAM and SIRT3. Additionally, irisin restored mitochondrial membrane potential and ATP production lowered by TGF-β1 treatment. In vivo, irisin ameliorated the elevated liver-to-body weight ratio induced by BDL and alleviated liver fibrosis, as evidenced by Masson's trichrome staining. Irisin also improved mitochondrial dysfunction induced by BDL surgery. Conclusion: Irisin effectively attenuated HSC activation, ameliorated liver fibrosis in BDL mice, and improved associated mitochondrial dysfunction. In response, this study advances a process-based approach, positing that the progressive aspect systematically emphasizes a process unfolding within a specific reference time. By foregrounding the ongoing process as the fundamental element, this account provides a cohesive explanation for the progressive across its diverse readings. Background: Nurses providing care to patients with end-of-life or terminal illnesses often encounter ethically challenging situations leading to moral distress. However, existing quantitative studies have examined moral distress using instruments that address general clinical situations rather than those specific to end-of-life care. Furthermore, qualitative studies have often been limited to participants from a single unit or those experiencing moral distress-induced circumstances. A comprehensive and integrated understanding of the overarching process of moral distress is vital to discern the unique circumstances surrounding end-of-life care and its consequential impacts. Research objectives: To explore the moral distress experiences of nurses who are frequently involved in caring for patients with end-of-life or terminal illnesses and apply it to two existing theories: the model of moral distress and the ecological model. Research design: A qualitative descriptive approach was employed. Participants and research context: Seven focus group interviews involving 30 nurses were performed. The subsequent transcriptions underwent rigorous content analysis. Ethical considerations: We obtained Institutional Review Board approval from a university. Focus group interviews were conducted with nurses who agreed to participate and signed the consent form. Findings: The moral distress-inducing factors and nurses' perceived impact of moral distress were identified and categorized based on moral distress theories and ecological models. A total of 15 categories and 30 subcategories across the following 4 domains were derived: (1) intrapersonal, (2) interpersonal, (3) organizational, and (4) structural factors. Conclusions: End-of-life-specific circumstances induced moral distress among nurses, with both negative and positive impacts identified. Effective organizational and policy support is essential to manage conflicts, form a healthy organizational culture, provide training, and prevent unnecessary expenses due to the negative consequences of moral distress. Background: Bone marrow aspiration concentrate (BMAC) has garnered increasing interest due to its potential for healing musculoskeletal injuries. While the iliac crest remains a common harvest site, the aspiration technique's efficacy in offering the highest yield and prevalence of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) is controversial. This study aimed to compare two different techniques of bone marrow aspiration over the anterior iliac crest from a single level versus multiple levels. Methods: Anterior iliac crests were selected in seven adult patients (aged between 31 and 59 years old). Aspiration was achieved using an 11-gauge needle (length: 100 mm; diameter: 2.3 mm) specifically manufactured for bone marrow collection (BD, Becton, Franklin Lakes, NJ, USA) connected to a 10 mL syringe. On one side, 4cc of bone marrow was aspirated at a single level to a depth of 7 cm without changing the needle direction. On the other side, over the same portion of the iliac crest, 1 cc of bone marrow was obtained from multiple levels of different depths during needle retrieval, maintaining a distance of 1 cm and changing the tip direction. The samples were blindly sent to the laboratory without indicating whether they came from an single level or multiple levels. Fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) and osteoblast differentiation were analyzed and compared. Results: In the FACS analysis, the single level resulted in a higher population of MSCs that were positive for CD105, CD73, and CD90 and negative for CD34, compared to the multiple-level method. In the process of osteoblast differentiation, it was observed that MSCs exhibited more advanced features of enhanced osteoblastic abilities in the single-level method rather than the multiple-level method. Conclusions: A single-level aspiration technique at the anterior iliac crest may produce a high-quality bone marrow aspirate. This study's aim is to control the proportional valves for automated drilling to serve as a preliminary phase toward the fully automated control of drilling rigs. Drilling rigs are quintessential in civil engineering and resource exploration, used primarily to bore holes into the ground. With the burgeoning demand for precision and smart functionalities in their operations, this research adopts a targeted approach. Central to the methodology, this study crafted a control module focusing explicitly on the three pivotal mechanisms of the drilling rig: impact, feed, and rotation. The optimal pressures essential for each control variable were determined through an in-depth study of the drilling patterns showcased by expert operators. These evaluations showed that an excessive feed pressure might distort the guide shell and bit, resulting in pronounced deviations in the drilling angle and compromised accuracy. Further intricacies were observed at the onset of rotation and feed, where a transient pressure surge emerged, which was attributed to the initial movement of a rod from its resting position. With these nuances in the foreground, an automated drilling algorithm tailored to maintain these optimal pressure thresholds was engineered. These research endeavors will pivot toward predicting the rock properties to fine-tune the pressure distribution in drilling rig control. Introduction: A change from the supine to prone position causes hemodynamic alterations. We aimed to evaluate the effect of fluid preloading in the supine position, the subsequent hemodynamic changes in the prone position and postoperative outcomes. Patients and methods: This prospective, assessor-blind, randomized controlled trial was conducted between March and June 2023. Adults scheduled for elective orthopaedic lumbar surgery under general anaesthesia were enrolled. In total, 80 participants were randomly assigned to fluid maintenance (M) or loading (L) groups. Both groups were administered intravenous fluid at a rate of 2 ml/kg/h until surgical incision; Group L was loaded with an additional 5 ml/kg intravenous fluid for 10 min after anaesthesia induction. The primary outcome was incidence of hypotension before surgical incision. Secondary outcomes included differences in the mean blood pressure (mBP), heart rate, pleth variability index (PVi), stroke volume variation (SVV), pulse pressure variation (PPV), stroke volume index and cardiac index before surgical incision between the two groups. Additionally, postoperative complications until postoperative day 2 and postoperative hospital length of stay were investigated. Results: Hypotension was prevalent in Group M before surgical incision and could be predicted by a baseline PVi >16. The mBP was significantly higher in Group L immediately after fluid loading. The PVi, SVV and PPV were lower in Group L after fluid loading, with continued differences at 2-3 time points for SVV and PPV. Other outcomes did not differ between the two groups. Conclusion: Fluid loading after inducing general anaesthesia could reduce the occurrence of hypotension until surgical incision in patients scheduled for surgery in the prone position. Additionally, hypotension could be predicted in patients with a baseline PVi >16. Therefore, intravenous fluid loading is strongly recommended in patients with high baseline PVi to prevent hypotension after anaesthesia induction and in the prone position. Destabilization of heme proteins is recognized to play a role in acute kidney injury (AKI). Hemopexin (Hpx), known for its role in binding heme, mitigates free heme toxicity. Despite this, the potential adverse effects of Hpx deposition in kidney tissues and its impact on kidney function are not fully understood. Deferoxamine (DFO) chelates iron released from heme and mitigates associated kidney damage. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate whether Hpx contributes to kidney injury in an ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) induced AKI model and to investigate if DFO could alleviate this damage. Mice were categorized into five groups: Sham-Vehicle, Sham-Hpx, IRI-Vehicle, IRI-Hpx, and IRI-Hpx-DFO. Decline in kidney function was observed exclusively in the IRI group, independent of Hpx injection. Serum Hpx levels remained comparable across all groups, and administration of Hpx did not alter serum Hpx levels or kidney function after 24 hours. Although increased Hpx deposition in kidneys was noted in both the IRI and Hpx groups, this accumulation did not correlate with impaired kidney function. Additionally, DFO did not exhibit a protective effect against kidney injury. In July 2023, cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) were reported at 2 shelters for stray cats in Seoul, South Korea. The cause of infection was suspected to be improperly sterilized raw food made from domestic duck meat, which was manufactured in South Korea. All viruses isolated from cats at the shelters and from the raw food belonged to HPAI A(H5N1) clade 2.3.4.4b. The gene constellation of all viruses was most similar to that of viruses isolated in Korea in November 2022. Of note, the viruses isolated from infected cats harbored mutations E627K or D701N in polymerase basic 2, which are indicative of adaptation to mammals. Postmortem examination revealed systemic pathologic lesions and the presence of widespread virus in different tissues. Thus, consumption of raw duck meat contaminated with HPAI virus likely caused systemic symptoms and death in cats, indicating the introduction of mammal-adapted mutations of the virus. This study aimed to contribute to the conservation of red pandas by improving the understanding of their oestrus cycle through examining urinary hormone changes during their breeding season. To minimize stress associated with blood sample collection, we used urine samples Sex hormone levels were measured over six months in pregnant and nonpregnant red pandas, to help understand changes in oestrogen concentrations during oestrus, post-mating progesterone concentrations and differences in ceruloplasmin concentrations. The results of the study revealed that female red pandas are polyoestrous, with a second oestrogen peak after mating. Progesterone changed in a cascading fashion, peaking and then gradually declining. Successfully mated females showed higher levels of progesterone than unsuccessfully mated females, which had no peak in progesterone after mating. Ceruloplasmin was measured to confirm pregnancy, but its value as a pregnancy diagnostic factor was not confirmed. These results provide significant insights into the reproductive physiology of red pandas and lay the foundation for additional research towards improving the management and breeding strategies for this threatened species. Peritonsillar abscesses and deep neck infection are potentially serious infections among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), posing risks for severe complications and drawing significant public health concern. This nationwide, population-based longitudinal study (2002–2019) assessed the extended relationship between chronic kidney disease (CKD) and the likelihood of peritonsillar abscess and deep neck infection in a Korean cohort. Using a 1:4 propensity score overlap-weighted matching, we included 16,879 individuals with CKD and 67,516 comparable controls, accounting for demographic variables and comorbidities to ensure balanced group comparisons. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for deep neck infection and peritonsillar abscesses in relation to CKD history were calculated with a propensity score overlap-weighted Cox proportional hazards model. Our results revealed no significant increase in the overall incidence of deep neck infections or peritonsillar abscesses in CKD patients compared to controls. Interestingly, CKD patients demonstrated a 50% reduced likelihood of developing peritonsillar abscesses (HR 0.50; 95% CI = 0.30–0.83; p = 0.007), particularly among subgroups aged 70 years or older, females, non-smokers, rural residents, overweight individuals, and those with lower comorbidity burdens (e.g., absence of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, or hyperglycemia). In summary, the results suggest that lifestyle modifications and the effective management of comorbidities could reduce the risk of peritonsillar abscess in certain CKD subgroups. Hypothalamic innate immune responses to dietary fats underpin the pathogenesis of obesity, in which microglia play a critical role. Progranulin (PGRN) is an evolutionarily conserved secretory protein containing seven and a half granulin (GRN) motifs. It is cleaved into GRNs by multiple proteases. In the central nervous system, PGRN is highly expressed in microglia. To investigate the role of microglia-derived PGRN in metabolism regulation, we established a mouse model with a microglia-specific deletion of the Grn gene, which encodes PGRN. Mice with microglia-specific Grn depletion displayed diet-dependent metabolic phenotypes. Under normal diet–fed conditions, microglial Grn depletion produced adverse outcomes, such as fasting hyperglycemia and aberrant activation of hypothalamic microglia. However, when fed a high-fat diet (HFD), these mice exhibited beneficial effects, including less obesity, glucose dysregulation, and hypothalamic inflammation. These differing phenotypes appeared to be linked to increased extracellular cleavage of anti-inflammatory PGRN into proinflammatory GRNs in the hypothalamus during overnutrition. In support of this, inhibiting PGRN cleavage attenuated HFD-induced hypothalamic inflammation and obesity progression. Our results suggest that the extracellular cleavage of microglia-derived PGRN plays a significant role in promoting hypothalamic inflammation and obesity during periods of overnutrition. Therefore, therapies that inhibit PGRN cleavage may be beneficial for combating diet-induced obesity. Objectives: This study explored how group-based early parent education impacts development in preterm infants. Methods: This retrospective cohort study, with a historical control group, included preterm infants (n = 246) with corrected ages (CAs) of 0–3 months. Those visiting the clinic between July 2017 and December 2018 formed the control group (n = 145), whereas those visiting between January 2019 and February 2020 (n = 101) constituted the education group. The education group received six education sessions performed by a physical therapist, and two sessions conducted by an occupational therapist at CAs of 0–6 months. Assessments included the following: Alberta Infant Motor Scale at CA 3, 6, 9, and 12 months; Bayley Scales of Infant Development II at CA 12 and 24 months; and the Sequenced Language Scale for Infants at CA 24 months. Results: The education group, which initially showed greater developmental delay than the control group, showed no significant delay after education sessions. Developmental improvements were more prominent in infants born before 28 weeks' gestational age, and in infants with no, or mild, brain injury. Conclusions: Group-based early parent education improved development at CA 24 months in preterm infants, especially in infants born before 28 weeks gestational age, and in infants with no, or mild, brain injury. Optics has advanced through centuries of research into the fundamental properties of light and its interactions with matter. Within this rich history, one optical component stands out: the diffraction grating. Liquid crystals (LCs) have emerged as promising candidates in diffraction gratings. LCs are versatile and adaptable materials influenced by various external factors. Diffractive LC grating devices can be produced through methods such as photo alignment, using polymer walls, or employing patterned electrodes. However, photo alignment poses challenges in terms of manufacturing complexity, and using polymer walls is associated with some drawbacks, such as high driving voltage and slower response times, which must be considered in their application. Currently, research efforts are predominantly focused on manufacturing techniques involving patterned electrodes. In this review, we comprehensively explored the theoretical foundations underpinning diffraction gratings.
