In this tutorial review, we will describe crucial aspects related to the application of machine learning to help users avoid the most common pitfalls. The examples we present will be based on data from the field of molecular electronics, specifically single-molecule electron transport experiments, but the concepts and problems we explore will be sufficiently general for application in other fields with similar data. In the first part of the tutorial review, we will introduce the field of single-molecule transport, and provide an overview of the most common machine learning algorithms employed. In the second part of the tutorial review, we will show, through examples grounded in single-molecule transport, that the promises of machine learning can only be fulfilled by careful application. The contact effects of single-molecule break junctions on rectification behaviors were experimentally explored by a systematic control of anchoring groups of 1,4-disubstituted benzene molecular junctions. Single-molecule conductance and I-V characteristic measurements reveal a strong correlation between rectifying effects and the asymmetry in contacts. Analysis using energy band models and I-V calculations suggested that the rectification behavior is mainly caused by asymmetric coupling strengths at the two contact interfaces. Fitting of the rectification ratio by a modified Simmons model we developed suggests asymmetry in potential drop across the asymmetric anchoring groups as the mechanism of rectifying I-V behavior. This study provides direct experimental evidence and sheds light on the mechanisms of rectification behavior induced simply by contact asymmetry, which serves as an aid to interpret future single-molecule electronic behavior involved with asymmetric contact conformation. A series of helquat molecules with increasing number of rings n was studied by electrochemical and break junction methods to provide redox characteristics and single molecule conductance properties. Even though selected species do not contain anchoring groups the molecular junction conductance was observed experimentally and depends strongly on the solvent used. Single molecule conductance G is almost two orders of magnitude higher in water environment compared to mesitylene, whereas the distribution of G values is narrow in water and wide in mesitylene solvent. In the non‐polar environment, G increases with increasing n, contrary to generally accepted notion of decreasing tunneling current with increasing molecular length. This behavior is, however, consistent with electrochemical properties, which showed that longer helquats are reduced more easily than the shorter ones. Furthermore, theoretical computations provided most probable molecular junction configurations of helquats in water solvent with excellent agreement between theoretical and experimental G values. Charge transport by tunnelling is one of the most ubiquitous elementary processes in nature. Small structural changes in a molecular junction can lead to significant difference in the single-molecule electronic properties, offering a tremendous opportunity to examine a reaction on the single-molecule scale by monitoring the conductance changes. Here, we explore the potential of the single-molecule break junction technique in the detection of photo-thermal reaction processes of a photochromic dihydroazulene/vinylheptafulvene system. Statistical analysis of the break junction experiments provides a quantitative approach for probing the reaction kinetics and reversibility, including the occurrence of isomerization during the reaction. The product ratios observed when switching the system in the junction does not follow those observed in solution studies (both experiment and theory), suggesting that the junction environment was perturbing the process significantly. This study opens the possibility of using nano-structured environments like molecular junctions to tailor product ratios in chemical reactions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
