We examine the relationship between corporate tax avoidance and reliance on trade credit. Using a sample of US listed firms during the period 1987–2017, we show that tax-avoiding firms rely more on supplier-provided trade credit as a source of financing. We take advantage of the 'check-the-box' regulation introduced in 1997 as an exogenous shock to firms' tax strategies. The findings from the difference-in-differences design suggest a causal interpretation of our results. We also observe that the relationship between tax avoidance and trade credit is more salient for a sub-sample of firms with: (i) more information asymmetry; and (ii) more financing constraints. These findings remain robust to a battery of sensitivity analyses and endogeneity concerns. In an additional analysis, we find that corporate tax avoidance increases firms' reliance on trade credit by reducing access to bank loans. Research Question/Issue: This study investigates the impact of family governance, including founder directors and their ties to family members on the board, on the social performance of microfinance institutions (MFIs), a special kind of social enterprise with dual objectives. Research Findings/Insights: Using a dataset of 735 MFIs operating in Bangladesh from 2007 to 2017, we find that founder directors and board members with family ties to the founder have an adverse impact on MFIs' social performance. These findings hold when we perform several robustness tests and endogeneity tests. Theoretical/Academic Implications: We contribute to the corporate governance literature on MFIs and social enterprises in two ways. First, our findings suggest that, when MFIs are confronted with dual performance objectives, founder directors may "trade off" social outcomes in favor of economic outcomes and therefore adversely affect MFIs' social performance. Second, our findings extend the literature by showing that the presence of board members with family ties to founder directors also adversely affects MFIs' social performance. Practitioner/Policy Implications: This study suggests that MFIs' board composition influences their governance and ability to oversee their social and financial performance effectively. We examine the relationship between brand capital and firms' credit ratings. Using a sample of 5,787 publicly listed U.S. firm-year observations over the 1994–2017 period, we provide evidence that firms with higher levels of brand capital are associated with more favorable credit ratings. In cross-sectional analyses, we find that this relationship is more salient for firms with higher levels of information asymmetry and more financial and distress risk, and for firms with weak governance. In additional analysis, we find a negative relationship between brand capital and the implied cost of equity capital. Our results are robust to alternative measures of brand capital, an alternative regression model and endogeneity tests. Overall, our findings suggest that brand capital captures important financial and non-financial information, and that credit rating agencies, sensibly, consider brand capital in their assessment of firms' credit worthiness. We examine the relationship between brand capital and stock price crash risk. Crash risk, defined as the negative skewness in the distribution of returns for individual stocks, captures asymmetry in risk, and has important implications for investment choices and risk management. Using a sample of 39,685 publicly listed U.S. firm-year observations covering 1975 to 2018, we show that brand capital is significantly and negatively related to crash risk. We also use an advanced machine learning approach and confirm that brand capital is a strong predictor of future stock price crashes. Our cross-sectional analyses show that this negative relationship is more evident for subsamples with transitory poor earnings performance or persistent good earnings performance, greater corporate tax avoidance, and weak corporate governance structures. The results survive numerous robustness tests, including the use of alternative measures of brand capital, crash risk, and several endogeneity tests. In sum, our findings are consistent with agency theory, suggesting that high levels of brand capital expose firms to investor and customer scrutiny, which reduces managerial opportunistic behavior that may include the accumulation and concealment of negative information. This study investigates the relationship between chief executive officer (CEO) inside debt holdings (pension benefits and deferred compensation) and use of supplier‐provided trade credit. We provide evidence that CEO inside debt holdings are negatively related to the use of trade credit. Our results are robust to the use of alternative regression estimation and alternative measures of key variables. We exploit the final enforcement of Section 409A of the Internal Revenue Code (IRC) as an exogenous shock to inside debt holdings. Our difference‐in‐difference regression analysis establishes a causal relationship. In addition, we provide evidence that our documented results are not driven by omitted variable bias. We also employ instrumental variable regression estimation using heteroskedasticity‐based instruments to mitigate the endogeneity concern. Our cross‐sectional analyses reveal that the relationship between CEO inside debt holdings and trade credit is more pronounced in firms with poor information environments and greater financing constraints. This systematic literature review critically analyzes studies on the determinants of short selling and the implications for information distribution, real economic decisions, financial reporting, and external auditing. We select and review studies within a research framework, identifying two of the most important areas in the literature: short sellers as important information intermediaries and short sellers' influence on accounting, auditing, and other corporate decisions as the 'spillover effect' of the information distribution. Of the two, the former has a strong emphasis on financial markets, whereas the latter extends this traditional topic in finance to financial economics, corporate governance, and accounting. Our review highlights that, although short sellers use both private information and public information in selecting stocks for shorting, we know little about how they use private and non-financial information to influence managerial economic decisions and firms' financial reporting decisions. In discussing potential future research, we emphasize that penetrating the information 'black box' and positioning research regarding the information that short sellers use and how they use it are necessary to advance the short-selling literature. We investigate the extent to which corporate reputation risk influences cash holdings for US listed firms over the period 2007–2018. Our results show that firms having a high reputation risk hold significantly more cash. This documented relationship persists even after controlling for other determinants of cash holdings, including corporate social responsibility performance, explicitly. Using a series of analyses, we show that this relationship is not driven by endogeneity problems. Further, we find that the positive relationship between reputation risk and cash holdings is more pronounced for firms with more financing constraints and agency problems, and for growth, mature and shake‐out firms. In an additional test, we show that firms having a low reputation risk are associated with a higher marginal value of cash than are their high reputation risk counterparts. This study investigates the relation between firm life cycle and trade credit. We find evidence that firms in the introduction, growth, and decline stages use significantly more trade credit, whereas firms in the mature stage use significantly less trade credit. Firm life cycle works as a separate channel to affect trade credit independently from other channels proposed in the literature. These results are robust to alternative regression specifications, alternative measures of life cycle and trade credit, and the endogeneity concern. Using a large sample of US data, we examine the relationship between asset redeployability and corporate tax avoidance. We also examine the extent to which asset redeployability influences tax avoidance directly and indirectly (through financing constraints channel). We find a significant negative relationship between asset redeployability and tax avoidance, implying that firms with more redeployable assets tend to engage in less tax avoidance. We also confirm that asset redeployability reduces tax avoidance both directly and indirectly (through reducing financing constraints). These results are robust to alternative specifications of asset redeployability and corporate tax avoidance, and to the use of a two‐stage least squares (2SLS) analysis to mitigate any endogeneity concerns relating to omitted variables, reverse causality, and model misspecification. Overall, these findings extend our existing understanding of the implication of asset redeployability in an accounting context and demonstrate that redeployability of assets has important implication for corporate tax planning. This study examines the effect of income shifting on the implied cost of equity capital (ICOE) for US multinational corporations (MNCs). We find that income shifting is significantly positively associated with the ICOE after controlling for corporate tax avoidance and other determinants of the ICOE. On average, a one-standard deviation increase in income shifting is associated with an increase in the ICOE of around 0.37%. Our main results are robust to additional tests of risk-pricing and endogeneity. Furthermore, the association between income shifting and the ICOE is more pronounced for MNCs operating in low-quality information environments and where corporate governance monitoring is inadequate. We examine whether auditors consider organization capital in audit pricing decisions. Utilizing an international sample from 40 countries spanning the period 2001–2017, we find that firms with high levels of organization capital pay high audit fees: a finding that is consistent with both the risk‐ and the agency‐based arguments for audit pricing. Additionally, our results indicate that the positive relationship between organization capital and audit fees is reinforced in firms with pronounced business risks and agency problems, whereas it is relatively weak in countries with protective employment legislation. Our study contributes to the voluminous literature on the determinants of audit fees by showing that auditors price the risks related to clients' intangible assets, especially those embodied in a firm's key talents. This study investigates the association between firm‐level business strategy and the readability of narrative disclosures in annual reports. As business strategy affects the information environment and financial performance of firms, we expect the readability of narrative disclosures to vary with the particular business strategy that a firm pursues. In accord with this expectation, we find that firms with prospector‐type business strategies produce less readable narratives, while those with defender‐type business strategies produce more readable narratives. We also document that the association between strategy and readability is partially mediated by organisational performance, although the mediation effect is rather modest. This study examines the association between financial statement comparability and idiosyncratic return volatility (IRV). A greater degree of comparability lowers information acquisition costs, reduces the uncertainties associated with performance evaluation, and increases the overall quantity and quality of information available to corporate outsiders, which, in turn, helps investors to understand and evaluate the cash flow and performance of firms more accurately. Therefore, we hypothesize a negative association between financial statement comparability and IRV. Using a large US sample from 1981 to 2013, we show that financial statement comparability is associated with lower level of IRV significantly. We also find this association to be more pronounced in a poor information environment. This study contributes to the emerging research that stresses the benefits of financial statement comparability. This study examines the association between managerial ability and the readability of narrative disclosures in 10-K reports. Using a large US sample from 1994 to 2015, we find that managerial ability is significantly positively associated with the readability of narrative disclosures in 10-K reports. We also find that this association is more pronounced for firms with high levels of profitability. In addition, firms' financial performance mediates the association between managerial ability and the readability of 10-K reports. Further analysis shows that the association was more pronounced before the implementation of the plain English disclosure rules. These results are robust to alternative specifications of managerial ability, 10-K report readability, and the endogeneity concern. Purpose: This paper aims to investigate the impact of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) adoption on financial reporting quality and cost of equity. The paper further investigates whether such association varies at different life cycle stages. Design/methodology/approach: This paper follows the methodologies of DeAngelo et al. (2006) and Dickinson (2011) to develop proxies for the firms' stages in the life cycle. Findings: Using both pre- and post-IFRS adoption period for Australian listed companies, the paper finds that financial reporting quality reduced and cost of equity increased because of the adoption of IFRS. The paper further evidences that financial reporting quality in the post-IFRS period increased cost of equity. Finally, the paper finds that mature firms produce a better quality of earnings, which result in lower cost of capital. The results indicate that a mature firm was benefited because of the adoption of IFRS. This article examines the effects on cost stickiness of firms' involvement in corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities. Cost stickiness represents asymmetric cost behavior whereby the magnitude of cost increases in response to an increase in the activity level is greater than the magnitude of cost decreases with a decrease in the activity level. We hypothesize that CSR involvement requires ongoing investments in value-creating activities; hence, it is difficult to scale down committed resources instantly even when the activity declines. We use two different CSR proxies and find support for the CSR-related cost stickiness hypothesis. We further decompose CSR into strategic and tactical CSR and find that cost stickiness is more pronounced for strategic CSR. Finally, we examine the CSR-related cost behavior pattern across business cycles and find some evidence of cost stickiness during an expansionary phase of the economy and cost anti-stickiness during a recessionary phase but only for the tactical CSR component. We examine whether regional social capital has any impact on idiosyncratic return volatility. Using US data, we find that firms headquartered in high social capital counties exhibit significantly lower idiosyncratic return volatility. This effect is more pronounced in the presence of financial reporting quality and corporate social responsibility. When we estimate the direct and indirect effects of social capital, our study reveals that the direct effect of social capital captures around 80% of the total effect. This article investigates whether the presence of advisory directors and monitoring directors varies across firm life cycle stages. We follow a parsimonious life cycle proxy based on the predicted behaviour of operating, investing and financing cash flows across the different life cycle stages that result from firm performance and the allocation of resources. Using an Australian sample, this study shows that compared to mature-stage firms, firms in the introduction, shake-out and decline stages have more advisory directors. With respect to the demand for monitoring directors, we find that compared to mature-stage firms, firms in the introduction, shake-out and decline stages have fewer monitoring directors on the board. We survey the burgeoning literature on the determinants and consequences of firm‐specific future stock price crash risk. We synthesise a vast body of literature on the determinants of crash risk, identify weaknesses, and offer future research opportunities. We categorise the determinants into: (i) financial reporting and corporate disclosures, (ii) managerial incentives and managerial characteristics, (iii) capital market transactions, (iv) corporate governance mechanisms, and (v) informal institutional mechanisms. Despite a large body of research into the determinants of crash risk, very little research attention has been directed towards understanding the consequences of stock price crash. We investigate the association between state-level money laundering sentences and audit fees in the US. Money laundering measures a broad category of offenses involving financial transactions using funds or monetary instruments gained through criminal activities and tax evasion. We find that firms headquartered in US states with high rates of money laundering sentences pay more audit fees. Our results suggest that auditors incorporate, as a fee premium, the higher risks involved when clients operate in those states. Our result remains robust to alternative specifications of money laundering proxies, and to the inclusion of a number of firm-level and state-level control variables. We also conduct two-stage least squares and propensity score matching analysis to mitigate the endogeneity problem that might arise from omitted variables, reverse causality or model misspecification problems. This study examines the association between market risk disclosures (MRDs) and the investment efficiency of financial firms from six emerging markets in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. Based on a sample of 553 firm-year observations over the 2007-2011 period, we find that MRDs are significantly and negatively associated with both under-investment and over-investment and that this association is more pronounced for larger firms. We also find that the association between MRDs and under-investment is moderated during periods of economic distress such as the Global Financial Crisis of 2008 and that the association between MRDs and over-investment is magnified during periods of reduced financial distress. Our results are consistent with the idea that MRDs reduce information asymmetry, which ultimately improves investment efficiency. We contribute to the literature in an emerging market context by providing empirical evidence on the association between MRDs and investment efficiency across six emerging GCC capital markets. This study examines whether a firm’s life cycle explains its propensity to engage in corporate tax avoidance. Based on the Dickinson (2011) model of firm life cycle stages and a large dataset of US publicly listed firms over the 1987–2013 period, we find that tax avoidance is significantly positively associated with the introduction and decline stages and significantly negatively associated with the growth and mature stages using the shake-out stage as a benchmark. We observe a U-shaped pattern in tax avoidance outcomes across the various life cycle stages in line with the predictions of dynamic resource-based theory. This study investigates the corporate risk-taking and the performance consequences at different stages of the firm life cycle. We find that risk-taking is higher in the introduction and decline stages of the life cycle, but lower in the growth and mature stages. We also find that risk-taking during introduction and decline stage (growth and maturity stage) affects future performance adversely (positively). We also document that managerial risk-taking propensities increase during periods of high investor sentiment and firms in different life cycle stages respond to sentiment differently. Manuscript Type Empirical Research Question/Issue This study investigates whether the existence of a separate risk committee and risk committee characteristics are associated with market risk disclosures. It also tests whether the role of a risk committee in affecting market risk disclosures varies for different firm life cycle stages. Research Findings/Insights Using 677 firm-year observations of financial firms from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries during the years 2007-2011, we find that firms with a separate risk committee are associated with greater market risk disclosures, an effect that is more pronounced for mature-stage firms. Furthermore, findings suggest that risk committee qualifications and size have a significant positive impact on market risk disclosures. Theoretical/Academic Implications This study complements the corporate governance literature by incorporating agency theory, legitimacy theory, stakeholder theory, and the resource-based theory to provide more robust evidence of the impact of a separate risk committee and the firm life cycle on market risk disclosures. Our results support the monitoring effect of a separate risk committee and suggest that a separate risk committee can improve 'firm-level corporate governance' in the GCC countries characterized by a poor informational environment. Practitioner/Policy Implications Findings from this study provide evidence that the existence, qualifications, and size of risk committees may be used as a channel to improve the disclosure level, suggesting a policy prescription for regulators and policymakers. This paper examines whether auditor-provided tax services affect stock price crash risk: an important consideration for stock investors. Provision of tax services by incumbent auditors could accentuate or attenuate crash risk depending on whether such services give rise to knowledge spillover or impair auditor independence. The study investigates two channels through which tax services might affect crash risk: earnings management in tax expenses and tax avoidance. Also examined is whether the association between tax services and crash risk is moderated by the particular business strategy that organizations pursue. A two-stage model is used to control for the potential endogeneity inherent in the selection of auditors for tax services. Empirical findings reveal that auditor-provided tax services attenuate crash risk by constraining both earnings management in tax expenses and tax avoidance. Further evidence shows that auditor-provided tax services reduce crash risk for firms following innovator business strategies. Taken together, empirical findings reported in this study support knowledge spillover benefits, that is, insights gained from tax services can enhance audit effectiveness. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
