In the last 20 years, Maros and Pangkajene Kepulauan have contributed almost 8% of the total rice production from South Sulawesi province. However, based on observational data, these productions fluctuated yearly. Simple stepwise regression is used to model the ups and downs of these annual variations. Inputs to the model are the local variation of rainfall and air temperature and the remote forcings related to the El-Niño Southern Oscillation, Indian Ocean Dipole, and Monsoon. The model is cross-validated and its skill is measured using anomaly correlation and RMSE (root mean squared error). The model could be used as a complementary tool for decision-makers to stabilize rice production in both regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
