The principle objective of this study was to research the variation of fertility in Fucus vesiculosus across its growth band in the middle intertidal. After collecting twenty samples each at the upper and lower limits of the band, fertility was measured as the ratio of reproductive ends to nonreproductive ends. This study found that F. vesiculosus fertility at the lower limit of the middle intertidal is significantly higher than that at the upper limit. Although the fertility is higher, the density of both the number of holdfasts and total ends, apical and gamete, are significantly lower at the lower limit than at the upper limit of the growth band.
