The horse chestnut leaf miner (HCLM) Cameraria ohridella Deschka and Dimic (Lepidoptera, Gracillariidae) is a novel but significant pest in Europe. Current control measures are either inefficient or environmentally harmful. Tits (Parus spp.) open the mines and prey on HCLM, but the biocontrol efficiency of this behaviour has not yet been quantified. We installed bird nesting-boxes in a biennial field study on four sites close to Brunswick (Germany). On the same sites, we counted HCLM pupae, larvae, opened and closed mines, and parasitised larvae and pupae in leaves collected from horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum L., Hippocastanaceae) trees with and without bird exclusion. In both years, the HCLM number and the proportion of closed mines were higher in bird exclusion trees, particularly on sites with high abundance of tits. Hence, we suggest including the facilitation of birds, particularly tits, in future HCLM biocontrol strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sticky traps are a standard tool for monitoring alate arthropod pests in greenhouses. However, in practice, evaluation of traps over the whole growing season is rarely done. For decision making by growers, sticky traps are often only used for detection of pest presence. The reason behind is that although many studies show that pest population densities can be estimated using sticky traps under experimental conditions, validation under growing conditions and monitoring of beneficials are often lacking. In the current study, we evaluated whether trap densities recommended for practice are sufficient to estimate pest population densities of Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) and its natural enemy Encarsia formosa (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) in protected tomato cultures throughout the growing season. Our results show that trap catches provide reliable information about pest densities, in which correlations differed for specific developmental stages, i.e. adults < nymphs < nymphs (previous week). A single yellow sticky trap provided reliable information on nymphal density in the tomato crop on an area of at least 170 m. A rapid increase of parasitoid trap catches indicated high parasitism. In our experiments, a total trap catch of ≥6 parasitoids/trap was a suitable threshold for sufficient natural enemy activity in the tomato crop. Informal and very small enterprises (VSEs) face a similar set of obstacles to adequate financial access. Despite the challenges, this market presents a profitable business opportunity for banks in developing countries, while also supporting the objective of policymakers to increase financial inclusion for the un- or underserved micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Banks which have successfully served these firms have done so by developing innovative products and services that allow them to target these commonly un- or underserved enterprises, while taking into account common constraints. This paper showcases and discusses unconventional banking models currently targeting VSEs, analysing noteworthy business models which could also serve the informal market, and highlighting innovative approaches adopted by banks with regard to strategy, segmentation, products and services, distribution channels, and risk management. Additionally, this paper identifies a set of recommendations at the policy level that could facilitate financial inclusion of informal enterprises. Several important vegetable crops grown outdoors in temperate climates in Europe can be damaged by the root-feeding larvae of Diptera (Delia radicum, Delia floralis, Chamaepsila rosae, Delia platura, Delia florilega, Delia antiqua). Knowledge of pest insect phenology is a key component of any Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy, and this review considers the methods used to monitor and forecast the occurrence of root-feeding flies as a basis for decision-making by growers and the ways that such information can be applied. It has highlighted some current management approaches where such information is very useful for decision support, for example, the management of C. rosae with insecticidal sprays and the management of all of these pests using crop covers. There are other approaches, particularly those that need to be applied at sowing or transplanting, where knowledge of pest phenology and abundance is less necessary. Going forward, it is likely that the number of insecticidal control options available to European vegetable growers will diminish and they will need to move from a strategy which often involves using a single 'silver bullet' to a combination of approaches/tools with partial effects (applied within an IPM framework). For the less-effective, combined methods, accurate information about pest phenology and abundance and reliable decision support are likely to be extremely important. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
