Hereditary ataxia and spastic paraplegia are heterogeneous monogenic neurodegenerative disorders. To date, a large number of individuals with such disorders remain undiagnosed. Here, we have assessed molecular diagnosis by gene panel sequencing in 105 early and late-onset hereditary ataxia and spastic paraplegia probands, in whom extensive previous investigations had failed to identify the genetic cause of disease. Pathogenic and likely-pathogenic variants were identified in 20 probands (19%) and variants of uncertain significance in ten probands (10%). Together these accounted for 30 probands (29%) and involved 18 different genes. Among several interesting findings, dominantly inherited KIF1A variants, p.(Val8Met) and p.(Ile27Thr) segregated in two independent families, both presenting with a pure spastic paraplegia phenotype. Two homozygous missense variants, p.(Gly4230Ser) and p.(Leu4221Val) were found in SACS in one consanguineous family, presenting with spastic ataxia and isolated cerebellar atrophy. The average disease duration in probands with pathogenic and likely-pathogenic variants was 31 years, ranging from 4 to 51 years. In conclusion, this study confirmed and expanded the clinical phenotypes associated with known disease genes. The results demonstrate that gene panel sequencing and similar sequencing approaches can serve as efficient diagnostic tools for different heterogeneous disorders. In depicting scenes of tragedy, what happens when photojournalistsbecomethe story? Do photojournalists have a duty to rescue those they photograph? Should they? This article will use a series of iconic images – and the stories of the photojournalists behind the camera – to illustrate how exploring these questions can be a provocative vehicle through which to engage new law students in legal writing and analysis. The article focuses on an exercise that centers around a fictional “Duty to Rescue” statute modeled after European statutes of the same kind. The exercise is anchored by four images – three still photographs and one image that is part of a short documentary film – of people in tragic and near-death situations. The article explores ways to use the stories behind these images to engage law students in the question of whether the photojournalists who took the images had violated the fictional Duty to Rescue statute, and concludes with a discussion of ideas on how the basic exercise can be modified and/or expanded, including but not limited to raising issues of morality-based lawmaking, ethics, fairness, and differences in law across cultures. We model the effect of gravitational settling in the upper chromosphere on O, Fe, Si, and Ne, studying whether Coulomb collisions between ionized low First Ionization Potential (FIP) elements and protons is sufficient to cause abundance enhancements relative to oxygen. We find that low-FIP abundance enhancements comparable to observed values can be obtained provided the hydrogen ionization degree lies in the approximate range 10%–30%, which agrees with chromospheric models. Lower or higher hydrogen ionization causes the FIP-effect to become smaller or absent (depletion of all heavy elements). Iron must be almost fully ionized in order to become enriched relative to high-FIP elements, and this requires a high iron photoionization rate. The time scale necessary to produce the enrichment increases rapidly with increasing H ionization. For iron in a background from a semiempirical chromospheric model, with an H ion fraction of the order of 30%–40% in the upper chromosphere, 1–2 hr of settling is required to produce enhancements comparable to observations. The absolute abundance (relative to H), which monotonically decreases with time during settling, has by that time decreased by less than 50% in the same altitude region. With the same background conditions, the silicon abundance is more strongly enhanced by the settling than the iron abundance. The high-FIP element neon is depleted, relative to O and low-FIP elements, in the same background and altitude region where iron is enhanced, typically by 50% or more relative to O after 1–2 hr of settling. This article examines the role of fair value gains or losses related to Level 3 valuations in CEO cash compensation for U.S. financial firms. Our results show that Level 3 income is compensation-relevant. By separating Level 3 income into unrealized and realized Level 3 income, we find that CEO cash compensation is less sensitive to unrealized than realized Level 3 income, which indicates that compensation committees have a higher concern for the clawback problem associated with unrealized Level 3 income. A further analysis separating Level 3 income into positive and negative components shows that Level 3 losses are more compensation-relevant than Level 3 gains, thereby validating the argument that Level 3 losses are more credible than Level 3 gains. I explore the real effects of an update in loan loss accounting, the current expected credit loss (CECL) model. Although CECL's predecessor only required banks to recognize losses after an event that made a loan uncollectible, CECL requires banks to recognize expected lifetime credit losses when originating loans. CECL's earlier recognition of loan losses increases the cost of reserving regulatory capital for loans, decreasing banks' willingness to lend. Empirically, I find that, following CECL's approval, capital-constrained banks reduce their growth of total loans and residential loans. I also find that, for the residential loans banks continue to make, they choose to sell more shortly after origination, increasing the size of their originate-to-distribute (OTD) business. The increase in OTD mortgages is more pronounced for public banks, implying that their need to adopt CECL earlier than private banks outweighs the fact that they have better access to additional capital. This paper investigates the role of corporate financial reports in the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) regulatory activities. By tracking the EPA's direct retrieval of SEC filings, we identify three key findings. First, the EPA retrieves a large volume of financial reports, especially from firms in high‐pollution industries. Second, the EPA is more likely to access financial reports during enforcement investigations and significant rule proposals, but less so during compliance monitoring, with patterns varying predictably across firms. Third, the EPA's reliance on financial reports is potentially driven by its demand for information on firm liquidity, solvency, and profitability. This study examines the impact of engaging valuation specialists on the value relevance of Level 3 fair value measurements (FVMs) within the auditing process. Through an analysis of a sample of international commercial banks over the period from 2016 to 2019, this study reveals that both Level 1 and Level 2 FVMs are generally value relevant, regardless of the involvement of valuation specialists in the auditing process. However, the value relevance of Level 3 FVMs appears to be contingent upon the auditor's utilization of valuation specialists during the audit of these measurements. The findings of this study indicate that, notwithstanding the concerns highlighted in prior research, investors tend to hold the conviction that valuation specialists can make a substantive and positive impact on the auditing process, thereby enhancing the value relevance of Level 3 FVMs. Data Availability: Data are available from the public sources cited in the text. Twelve of 13 patients with congenital heart disease given continuous enteral nutrition displayed normal growth; cardiac function remained stable or improved in 10 in spite of the water load (146 +/- 22 ml/kg/day). We analyze the loan portfolios of United States banks from 2013 to 2023, showing that high environmental, social, and governance (ESG) banks have larger shares of consumer loans and commercial loans and smaller shares of construction loans and real estate loans. We also find that the governance pillar (G) is more tightly related to the bank loan composition compared to the environmental (E) and social (S) pillars. Furthermore, we show that construction loans and real estate loans decrease more considerably with bank ESG scores inside countries with high gas emissions, i.e., where ESG issues would arguably be more serious. Our interpretation is that sustainable banks are reluctant in lending money for real estate projects, exposing them to potentially high ESG risk. These findings contribute to developing a deeper insight about the relationship between ESG and bank lending, which, in the previous literature, has been treated more frequently in aggregate terms instead of separating loan types. Our outcomes suggest that sustainability is crucial for the availability of funds in the real estate sector, delivering important insights to bank and real estate managers, besides policy makers. This article reviews the history of peripheral nerve (PN) injuries and successive advances in their management by notable pioneers, an interesting topic that I chose for my Doctoral Thesis in 1990 in Madrid. Mentioning all their names and contributions is an obligatory tribute, and I offer my sincere apologies for inevitably leaving a few out. For half a century I have witnessed microsurgery advances, and also experienced frequent failures in my practice with the use of new techniques; a testimony that we are very far from achieving the 'Holy Grail' of complete PN recovery for these injuries. Our experience is often like a pendulum, from nihilism to optimism and vice versa. Many factors influence the results of PN repair. Fortunately, microsurgery has been a breakthrough but, too often, emergency surgery is carried out by surgeons without enough tools and experience, both very important factors in this field. Shadow banking is a main way for the financial market to serve the real economy today, and this process is closely related to systemic risk. This study examines the impact of shadow banking associated with sustainable development in China's banking on systemic risk. We analyze the data obtained from a rich sample of 31 listed commercial banks in China and shadow banking represented by wealth management products (WMPs) by constructing a dynamic complex interbank network model. The results show that the risks and vulnerabilities generated by shadow banking spread out through the interbank network and cause systemic risk to increase. The effect operates through increasing the number of default banks, reducing banks' survival rate and profit, and forcing central bank bailout funds expansion. However, it has a positive impact in terms of augmenting liquidity and enhancing investment opportunities. Furthermore, the variability in the influence of different categories of shadow banking is assessed, emphasizing that short-term shadow banking exerts a more pronounced impact on systemic risk. In addition, the heterogeneity of the shadow banking effect on different types of commercial banks is explored, revealing that local and rural commercial banks experience a more conspicuous effect compared to state-owned and joint-stock banks. Our findings highlight that improving external supervision, promoting financial internal governance, and constraining credit linkages are vital for alleviating the increase in risks in shadow banking and maintaining the sustainable development of banking. This paper evaluates the real effects of the new lease standard, ASC 842, on firms' investment and operational outcomes. Using a sample of airline companies, we find that, subsequent to the promulgation of ASC 842 (2016–2018), public airlines reduce operating lease usage by about seven to ten percentage points relative to private airlines. The reduced lease usage is replaced by increased ownership, suggesting an equilibrium shift in firms' investment due to changes in the cost-benefit tradeoffs associated with the operating lease classification. We also find evidence that the decline in lease usage hinders public airlines' operational flexibility, as we observe more idle capacity in flights post-ASC 842. Facing excess capacity, public airlines seem to deploy their aircraft to shorter flying routes, raising the possibility of more wear and tear on the fleet. This study investigates the economic consequences of the IFRS 3 (2008) requirement for fair valuing earnouts. Using a hand-collected sample of earnout fair value estimates in acquisitions completed by Australian firms, we find that a significant portion of acquirers overstate initial earnout liabilities and strategically reverse them as operating gains to boost post-M&A earnings. These overstatements are more pronounced when acquirers face investment- and performance-related pressure but attenuated in the presence of high-quality auditors and debt-financed deals. Acquirers also obfuscate earnout-related disclosures, inhibiting investors' assessment of earnout values. By doing so, managers extend their tenure. Further analysis reveals that IFRS 3 (2008) leads to a significant increase in both the frequency and magnitude of earnouts in public acquirers' transactions. Overall, we highlight the accounting benefit of earnouts for acquirers under IFRS 3 (2008), with implications for investors, analysts, auditors, and standard setters. Objective: Monetary policies are very important in bank-oriented economies, and the government adjusts the policies of other areas based on the money market. The inadequacies that have directly or indirectly affected the performance of monetary policy makers in Iran over the past three decades have had destructive effects on the country's economy. Therefore, in the present study, a comprehensive policy model has been presented in order to reform the banking system of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Methods: This study was conducted with the aim of designing a model of organizational happiness among the employees of the Ministry of Energy. The current research is considered a mixed research method in terms of purpose, applied research type, method type, and data collection method. The statistical population in the qualitative part includes 20 experts and in the quantitative part it includes all the employees of the country's banking system, from which a sample of 384 people was selected. The main tool of data collection in the field section includes a semi-structured interview (in the qualitative section) and a researcher-made questionnaire. The validity of the questionnaire was confirmed using the content validity method. Cronbach's alpha coefficient was calculated to evaluate the reliability of the questionnaire. Cronbach's alpha coefficient was more than 0.7, which shows that the questionnaire has good reliability. Partial least squares technique and SmartPLS software were used to test the hypotheses. In the qualitative part, foundational data theory and MAXQDA software are used. Results: In the qualitative part, foundational data theory and Max Kyuda software are used. Based on the results of qualitative analysis, there are six categories of main factors including background factors (upstream documents), causal factors (organizational factors, human resource factors and management factors), central phenomenon (banking system reform), interventionist (politicization of the administrative system and resistance against change), strategies (policy reform) and outcomes (quality of working life, improvement of customer experience and improvement of financial and non-financial performance) were identified as the main components of the comprehensive policy model for reforming the banking system. The results of the hypothesis test in the quantitative part showed that the components of conditions, including organizational factors, human resources factors, and management factors, have an effect on the reform of the banking system; Resistance to change, politicization of the system, reform of the banking system and upstream documents have a significant impact on strategies (reform policy). It was also found that the reform policy has a positive and significant impact on all three consequences of the model, including the quality of work life (employees), improving the customer experience (customers), and the financial and non-financial performance of the bank (organization). Conclusions: The results obtained in this research, while strengthening the domestic literature about banking system policymaking, provide practical guidelines for reforming the banking system to senior managers of the country's banking system. We examine the economic consequences of a rule designed to improve consumers' understanding of mortgage information. The 2015 TILA‐RESPA Integrated Disclosures rule (TRID) simplifies the mortgage disclosures provided to consumers. As a consequence, TRID‐affected mortgages become a less attractive investment opportunity to banks. Our main results document that mortgage applications affected by TRID are less likely to be approved following the rule's effective date. We find evidence consistent with both a decrease in consumers' information processing costs and an increase in banks' secondary market frictions, providing insight into the potential channels through which this reduction in mortgage credit operates. We also find that banks partially compensate for reduced mortgage lending by increasing small business lending, and that fintechs absorb mortgage demand in areas with reduced mortgage lending by banks. Our study documents real actions that firms take in response to disclosure transparency regulation and contributes to the literature on the economic consequences of such regulation. A rising trend is that analysts bundle earnings forecasts for multiple firms on the same day, and such forecast bundling is associated with low‐quality forecasts. We explore target price bundling and recommendation bundling. Factors driving bundling revisions of an output for multiple firms vary across three outputs: forecasts, target prices, and recommendations. Target price (recommendation) revisions bundled for firms are less informative than stand‐alone revisions. Although consistency in the direction of revisions between different outputs is typically associated with higher perceived quality, consistent revisions between outputs are not associated with higher informativeness of revisions bundled for multiple firms. Motivated by the debate about the introduction of the fair value option for (financial) liabilities (FVOL) and the requirement to recognize and separately disclose in financial statements debt valuation adjustments (DVAs), this study explores what we can learn about a firm's credit risk from DVAs. Using a sample of US bank holding companies that elect the FVOL, we show that DVAs generally cannot be explained by the same factors that explain contemporaneous changes in bank's credit quality. We further find that DVAs can explain future changes in credit risk when the fair value of liabilities is based on managerial inputs (Level 3). Overall our results suggest that managers have an information advantage in estimating credit risk and that DVAs provide inside information to the market. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: High levels of mental health literacy (MHL) have been linked to the ability to correctly recognize certain problems as mental health issues, which then may lead to effective help-seeking behaviors. Most research on MHL has focused on a limited number of psychiatric diagnoses, using Australian samples. Objective: This study aimed to investigate various components of MHL in a large sample of undergraduate students in the United States. Methods: We conducted a vignette-based study with 843 undergraduate students. Six psychiatric diagnoses (and two "non-disordered" scenarios) were represented in distinct vignettes. Participants rated the severity of each vignette character's problem, the helpfulness of numerous treatment options, and the likelihood that different etiological factors contributed to the character's problem. Key Results: Across all clinical vignettes, therapy/counseling was perceived to be the most helpful treatment. Participants rated "personal weakness/lack of willpower" as contributing the most to the alcohol use disorder (AUD) character's problems. Our hypothesis related to how perceptions of etiology may impact participants' perceptions of different types of treatment was partially supported for the depression character. When participants described the depression character as having a "psychological/mental health problem," they were more likely to perceive therapy/counseling as being helpful compared to medication. Conclusions: Participants recognized most of the psychiatric diagnoses as a mental health problem, acknowledged the seriousness of the presenting problems, and recommended effective help-seeking behavior. However, undergraduate U.S. students could benefit from increased MHL specifically related to AUD. Purpose: The present study investigated the impact of earnings volatility and environmental uncertainty on accounting comparability in an emerging economy and the moderating role of COVID-19 pandemic for the companies listed on Tehran Stock Exchange (TSE). Design/methodology/approach: The data about 181 companies during 2014–2021 were examined. In this study, accounting comparability was predicted for the firms' accounting systems and the coefficient estimates were calculated. The present study used the coefficient of variation of sales to capture sales volatility as the primary environmental uncertainty measure. Findings: The results showed that both the earnings volatility and environmental uncertainty have a significant negative effect on accounting comparability, and that COVID-19 significantly increases the negative impact of earnings volatility and environmental uncertainty on accounting comparability. The hypothesis testing based on robust, GLS, GMM, GLM, OLS regressions and t+1 test confirmed these results. Originality/value: The present study aimed to develop knowledge-providing benefits for companies about the accounting comparability and managing more efficient decisions. The present findings help investors to understand and evaluate the performance of firms more accurately especially in earnings volatility and environmental uncertainty conditions and in the wake of a pandemic crisis such as COVID-19. Objective: Understanding how people respond to information about treatment options is important for informing efforts that promote treatment initiation and adherence. We examined the impact of informational treatment videos on treatment naive participants' views regarding the credibility of and their expectations for three treatment options. Materials and Methods: Adults (N = 300) who had experienced elevated depressive symptoms but had not participated in a treatment for depression were randomly assigned to one of four conditions. Three of the conditions were shown videos, providing information about (1) cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), (2) antidepressant medication (ADM), or (3) the combination of CBT and ADM. The fourth condition was not shown a video. Participants' self‐reported views of the credibility of and expectations for treatment served as primary outcome variables. Results: Compared with the control condition, videos about active treatments enhanced credibility and expectations for those treatments. When comparing CBT and ADM alone, messaging about either treatment enhanced credibility of and expectations for that treatment. The CBT only video produced the most positive expectations and highest credibility for CBT. Likewise, the ADM only video led to the most positive expectations and credibility for ADM. The video focused on combined treatment did not lead to particularly positive views of the combined treatment option. Conclusion: These findings demonstrate the importance of providing focused messaging to enhance the credibility of and expectations for treatment. Future research is needed to examine the impact of messaging in different contexts, as well as the impact of such messaging on treatment seeking, adherence, and outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Analysts' decision-making process, through which they use earnings and non-earnings forecasts to provide their target price revisions, remains opaque. Based on the decision tree analysis, we develop a new multivariate information metric, Internal Relevance (IR), to measure the extent to which the revisions of analysts' consensus earnings and sales forecasts are incorporated into the revisions of consensus target prices. We show that stocks with higher IR have stronger market reactions to target price revisions in terms of abnormal return, abnormal trading volume, and abnormal return volatility. These results remain consistent across a series of robustness checks. Finally, we perform portfolio analysis to show that IR can be used to screen stocks to improve trading profitability. Attending to treatment preferences is an element of person‐centred care, reported as beneficial in improving treatment adherence, satisfaction, and outcome, in practice. The results of preference trials were inconsistent in supporting these benefits in intervention evaluation research. Informed by the conceptualisation of treatment preferences positing their indirect impact on outcomes, this narrative review aimed to summarise the evidence on the effects of preferences on enrolment; withdrawal or attrition; engagement, enactment, and satisfaction with treatment; and outcomes. The search yielded 72 studies (57 primary trials and 15 reviews). The results of vote counting indicated that (1) offering participants the opportunity to choose treatment enhances enrolment (reported in 87.5% of studies), and (2) providing treatments that match participants' preferences reduces attrition (48%); enhances engagement (67%), enactment (50%) and satisfaction with (43%) treatment; and improves outcomes (35%). The results are attributed to conceptual and methodological issues including less‐than‐optimal assessment of treatment preferences, which contributes to ill‐identified preferences, accounting for withdrawal, low enactment, and limited satisfaction with treatment. These treatment processes, in turn, mediate the impact of treatment preferences on outcomes. It is important to refine and standardise the methods for assessing preferences and to examine their indirect impact (mediated by treatment processes) on outcomes in future preference trials to validly identify their benefits. This article uses the financial data of China's A-share listed companies from 2007 to 2020 and examines the impact of accounting information consistency on audit fees. The study finds that higher consistency is significantly associated with a firm's lower audit fees after controlling for other factors. After the robustness test, the conclusion remains unchanged. The mechanism test finds that higher consistency reduces audit risks and thus reduces the company's audit fees. Further research finds that the reducing effect of consistency on audit fees is significantly more apparent in companies with higher financial leverage. Overall, this article expands the research on the influencing factors of audit fees from the consistency perspective. The research conclusions have reference value for information users to use accounting information to supervise governance, improve the quality of financial statement disclosure, and reduce the company's audit fees. Pollicization has been a very successful procedure in the treatment of specific types of hypoplastic thumb. Although much has remained the same since early descriptions of the procedure in the 1800s and 1900s, refinements over the years have made it safer and more predictable. Over the years at our institution we have studied, modified and refined our incisions to produce a new thumb that is aesthetically pleasing with excellent function. Little is known about how individuals with and without mood disorders perceive the inherent risks and helpfulness of participating in innovative psychiatric research, or about the factors that influence their willingness to participate. We conducted an online survey with 80 individuals (self-reported mood disorder [n = 25], self-reported good health [n = 55]) recruited via MTurk. We assessed respondents' perceptions of risk and helpfulness in study vignettes associated with two innovative research projects (intravenous ketamine therapy and wearable devices), as well as their willingness to participate in these projects. Respondents with and without mood disorders perceived risk similarly across projects. Respondents with no mood disorders viewed both projects as more helpful to society than to research volunteers, while respondents with mood disorders viewed the projects as equally helpful to volunteers and society. Individuals with mood disorders perceived ketamine research, and the two projects on average, as more helpful to research volunteers than did individuals without mood disorders. Our findings add to a limited empirical literature on the perspectives of volunteers in innovative psychiatric research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is a growing interest to understand the business relevance of ESG issues, especially those related to the firm performance. We propose a framework to better understand the relationship between true and observed materiality and outline the associated measurement errors, which reflect the complex, nuanced and time evolving nature of the underlying construct as well as the ESG data. Our framework calls for researchers to consider the different types of measurement errors with care, because the choices made could exacerbate or mitigate the relationship between true and observed materiality. Integrated reporting (IR) by firms is intended to improve not only the quality of information available to external parties, but also internal managerial decision making. IR is considered useful to address the short-term orientation of firms caused by pressure from short-term oriented shareholders. This study examines whether the introduction of IR discourages real activities manipulation, a form of myopic behavior. Using a large sample of Japanese listed companies, the study empirically tests the effect of IR on real activities manipulation through panel data regression analysis. We find that the introduction of IR is related to higher level of abnormal cash flows from operations, lower level of abnormal production costs, and lower level of total activities manipulation. These results generally suggest that firms tend not to engage in real activities manipulation after IR is introduced. Our results also show that while there is insignificant difference in the degree of real activities manipulation between IR and non-IR firms immediately after the introduction of IR, the degree of real activities manipulation is generally smaller in IR firms than in non-IR firms after more time has passed since the introduction of IR, consistent with the view of practitioners that IR is a continuous improvement process of internal decision making. Regarding the non-financial aspects, additional analysis shows that introducing IR is positively associated with the performance of environmental, social and governance (ESG). Our findings suggest that IR could discourage companies' short-term oriented behavior and promote long-term value creation, which is of interest to a wide range of stakeholders. Thus, our findings provide insightful evidence for researchers, practitioners, and policy makers interested in the role of IR in stakeholder-oriented corporate governance mechanisms.
