Human activity recognition (HAR) using wearable sensors enables continuous monitoring for healthcare applications. However, the conventional centralised training of deep learning models on sensor data poses challenges related to privacy, communication costs, and on-device efficiency. This paper proposes a federated learning framework integrating spiking neural networks (SNNs) with long short-term memory (LSTM) networks for energy-efficient and privacy-preserving HAR. The hybrid spiking-LSTM (S-LSTM) model synergistically combines the event-driven efficiency of SNNs and the sequence modelling capability of LSTMs. The model is trained using surrogate gradient learning and backpropagation through time, enabling fully supervised end-to-end learning. Extensive evaluations of two public datasets demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms LSTM, CNN, and S-CNN models in accuracy and energy efficiency. For instance, the proposed S-LSTM achieved an accuracy of 97.36% and 89.69% for indoor and outdoor scenarios, respectively. Furthermore, the results also showed a significant improvement in energy efficiency of 32.30%, compared to simple LSTM. This paper aims to demonstrate the differences in the values of linguistic politeness strategies in the Bugis language inherited by King Bone, Arumpone (abbreviated as AP), and King Wajo, Batara Wajo (abbreviated as BW), respectively through the Latoa Lontara manuscript (Bone) and the Sukku'na Wajo Lontara manuscript. This is very interesting because theoretically (Brown & Levinson, 1978), the dialogue in the two Lontara manuscripts was asymmetrical or hierarchical (the dialogue between the king and the subordinates), so superiors may use the cukuk speech to subordinates. However, this study found that BW used the cukuk speech, while AP did not. The difference in the choice of politeness strategy was that AP chose the type of distance politeness or self-politeness, while BW chose camaraderie politeness. As for subordinates, they should use congaa speech to their superiors in asymmetrical speech situations. However, the facts show that the subordinates of both kings never use the congaa speech to their respective superiors. In this case, Kajaolallido (abbreviated as KL), the AP's subordinate used the sanraa speech as used by AP to him, and even used the cukuk speech to AP when was asked to give moral advice. Since the last decade radio frequency (RF) sensing has emerged as an alternative in‐home monitoring and tracking technology because of its inherent device‐free and privacy‐preserved features over camera and wearable technologies. In this work, contrary to conventional radar‐based sensing and WiFi‐based setups which require line‐of‐sight (LoS) to process and collect the RF signals for monitoring, it is shown for the first time in literature the potential of using RF sensing for vitals, that is, heartbeat detection in the non‐line‐of‐sight (NLoS) using an in‐house‐developed reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), that is, wireless on the walls. The developed RIS is the world's first prototype which consists of "4096 elements". The unit cell elements are individually controlled via PIN diodes, 1‐bit, operating at 3.75 GHz specified for the fifth‐generation (5G) network. Near‐field beam steering is demonstrated, with a switching speed of 15 ms. For the first time in the literature its is demonstrated that RIS can assist in the detection of microactivities including the human heartbeat in NLoS indoor complex environment, a limitation with the existing RF sensing technologies to date. This paper will prove the existence of colloquial Makassar Indonesian (CMI) by showing its syntactic characteristics based on the use of personal pronoun affixes. This is very interesting and important because in general colloquial Indonesian languages are spoken in other cities in Indonesia, for example Jakarta, Manado, Ambon, etc. is a subsystem of the Indonesian language (hereinafter abbreviated as IND), but CMI is really a subsystem or subvariant of the Makassar language (MAK), the mother tongue of the Makassarese people. Therefore, it is not easy for Makassar newcomers to master this CMI. To master it, they must first learn the basic rules of MAK syntax. The fundamental thing in this case is the change in language typology, namely CMI has been proven to have adopted the V-S-O (Verb-Subject-Object) typology of MAK. Meanwhile, IND has the S-V-O (Subject-Predicate-Object) typology. This happened because there was language contact between MAK and Malay (now IND), a language which became the forerunner to the birth of IND as the national language and the state language of the Republic of Indonesia. In this case, at first Makassar city residents tried to use Malay, but with MAK syntactic interference. Gradually this form of interference became the entry point for the borrowing of the MAK syntactic subsystem in the IND speeches of Makassar city residents. This paper proposes a nature-inspired spider web-shaped ultra-high frequency (UHF) radio frequency identification (RFID) reader antenna and battery-free sensor-based system for healthcare applications. This antenna design consists of eight concentric decagons of various sizes and five straight microstrip lines.These lines are connected to the ground using 50 Ω resistors from both ends, except for one microstrip line that is reserved for connecting a feeding port. The reader antenna design features fairly strong and uniform electric and magnetic field characteristics. It also exhibits wideband characteristics, covering whole UHF RFID band (860–960 MHz) and providing a tag reading volume of 200 × 200 × 20 mm 3 . Additionally, it has low gain characteristics, which are necessary for the majority of nearfield applications to prevent the misreading of other tags. Moreover, the current distribution in this design is symmetric throughout the structure, effectively resolving orientation sensitivity issues commonly encountered in low-cost linearly polarized tag antennas. The measurement results show that the reader antenna can read medicine pills tagged using low-cost passive/battery-free RFID tags, tagged expensive jewelry, intervenes solution, and blood bags positioned in various orientations. It is proven that the scattering, reflection, and refraction properties of electromagnetic signals can be adapted and managed by using reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). In this paper, we have investigated the performance of a single-input-single-output (SISO) wideband system in terms of achievable data rate by optimizing the phases of RIS elements and performing a fair power allocation for each subcarrier over the entire bandwidth. A new beamforming codebook is developed from which the maximizing signal-to-noise (SNR) configuration is selected. The channel state information (CSI) along with the selected maximizing SNR configuration is then used by the proposed power algorithm to obtain the optimal configuration of the RIS. To validate our proposed method, it is compared with state-of-the-art semidefinite relaxation (SDR) scheme in terms of performance, complexity and run-time consumption. Our method shows dramatically lower computational complexity than the SDR method and achieves an order of 2.5 increase in the achievable data rate with an optimized RIS compared with an un-configured surface. Smart respiratory therapy is enabled by continual assessment of lung functions. This systematic review provides an overview of the suitability of equipment-to-patient acoustic imaging in continual assessment of lung conditions. The literature search was conducted using Scopus, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, SciELO Preprints, and Google Scholar. Fifteen studies remained for additional examination after the screening process. Two imaging modalities, lung ultrasound (LUS) and vibration imaging response (VRI), were identified. The most common outcome obtained from eleven studies was positive observations of changes to the geographical lung area, sound energy, or both, while positive observation of lung consolidation was reported in the remaining four studies. Two different modalities of lung assessment were used in eight studies, with one study comparing VRI against chest X-ray, one study comparing VRI with LUS, two studies comparing LUS to chest X-ray, and four studies comparing LUS in contrast to computed tomography. Our findings indicate that the acoustic imaging approach could assess and provide regional information on lung function. No technology has been shown to be better than another for measuring obstructed airways; hence, more research is required on acoustic imaging in detecting obstructed airways regionally in the application of enabling smart therapy. Increased demand for fast edge computation and privacy concerns have shifted researchers' focus towards a type of distributed learning known as federated learning (FL). Recently, much research has been carried out on FL; however, a major challenge is the need to tackle the high diversity in different clients. Our research shows that using highly diverse data sets in FL can lead to low accuracy of some local models, which can be categorised as anomalous behaviour. In this paper, we present FedBranched, a clustering-based framework that uses probabilistic methods to create branches of clients and assigns their respective global models. Branching is performed using hidden Markov model clustering (HMM), and a round of branching depends on the diversity of the data. Clustering is performed on Euclidean distances of mean absolute percentage errors (MAPE) obtained from each client at the end of pre-defined communication rounds. The proposed framework was implemented on substation-level energy data with nine clients for short-term load forecasting using an artificial neural network (ANN). FedBranched took two clustering rounds and resulted in two different branches having individual global models. Statistical analysis is frequently used to determine how manufacturing tolerances or operating condition uncertainties affect system performance. Surrogate is one of the accelerating ways in engineering tolerance quantification to analyze uncertainty with an acceptable computational burden rather than costly traditional methods such as Monte Carlo simulation. Compared with more complicated surrogates such as the Gaussian process, or Radial Basis Function (RBF), the Polynomial Regression (PR) provides simpler formulations yet acceptable outcomes. However, PR with the common least-squares method needs to be more accurate and flexible for approximating nonlinear and nonconvex models. In this study, a new approach is proposed to enhance the accuracy and approximation power of PR in dealing with uncertainty quantification in engineering tolerances. For this purpose, first, by computing the differences between training sample points and a reference point (e.g., nominal design), we employ certain linear and exponential basis functions to transform an original variable design into new transformed variables. A second adjustment is made to calculate the bias between the true simulation model and the surrogate’s approximated response. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed PR approach, we provide comparison results between conventional and proposed surrogates employing four practical problems with geometric fabrication tolerances such as three-bar truss design, welded beam design, and trajectory planning of two-link and three-link (two and three degrees of freedom) robot manipulator. The obtained results prove the preference of the proposed approach over conventional PR by improving the approximation accuracy of the model with significantly lower prediction errors. Using reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) to improve the coverage and the data rate of future wireless networks is a viable option. These surfaces are constituted of a significant number of passive and nearly passive components that interact with incident signals in a smart way, such as by reflecting them, to increase the wireless system's performance as a result of which the notion of a smart radio environment comes to fruition. In this survey, a study review of RIS‐assisted wireless communication is supplied starting with the principles of RIS which include the hardware architecture, the control mechanisms, and the discussions of previously held views about the channel model and pathloss; then the performance analysis considering different performance parameters, analytical approaches and metrics are presented to describe the RIS‐assisted wireless network performance improvements. Despite its enormous promise, RIS confronts new hurdles in integrating into wireless networks efficiently due to its passive nature. Consequently, the channel estimation for, both full and nearly passive RIS and the RIS deployments are compared under various wireless communication models and for single and multi‐users. Modern means of communication, economic crises, and political decisions play imperative roles in reshaping political and administrative systems throughout the world. Twitter, a micro-blogging website, has gained paramount importance in terms of public opinion-sharing. Manual intelligence of law enforcement agencies (i.e., in changing situations) cannot cope in real time. Thus, to address this problem, we built an alert system for government authorities in the province of Punjab, Pakistan. The alert system gathers real-time data from Twitter in English and Roman Urdu about forthcoming gatherings (protests, demonstrations, assemblies, rallies, sit-ins, marches, etc.). To determine public sentiment regarding upcoming anti-government gatherings (protests, demonstrations, assemblies, rallies, sit-ins, marches, etc.), the alert system determines the polarity of tweets. Using keywords, the system provides information for future gatherings by extracting the entities like date, time, and location from Twitter data obtained in real time. Our system was trained and tested with different machine learning (ML) algorithms, such as random forest (RF), decision tree (DT), support vector machine (SVM), multinomial naïve Bayes (MNB), and Gaussian naïve Bayes (GNB), along with two vectorization techniques, i.e., term frequency–inverse document frequency (TFIDF) and count vectorization. Moreover, this paper compares the accuracy results of sentiment analysis (SA) of Twitter data by applying supervised machine learning (ML) algorithms. In our research experiment, we used two data sets, i.e., a small data set of 1000 tweets and a large data set of 4000 tweets. Results showed that RF along with count vectorization performed best for the small data set with an accuracy of 82%; with the large data set, MNB along with count vectorization outperformed all other classifiers with an accuracy of 75%. Breathing monitoring is an efficient way of human health sensing and predicting numerous diseases. Various contact and non-contact-based methods are discussed in the literature for breathing monitoring. Radio frequency (RF)-based breathing monitoring has recently gained enormous popularity among non-contact methods. This method eliminates privacy concerns and the need for users to carry a device. In addition, such methods can reduce stress on healthcare facilities by providing intelligent digital health technologies. These intelligent digital technologies utilize a machine learning (ML)-based system for classifying breathing abnormalities. Despite advances in ML-based systems, the increasing dimensionality of data poses a significant challenge, as unrelated features can significantly impact the developed system's performance. Optimal feature scoring may appear to be a viable solution to this problem, as it has the potential to improve system performance significantly. Initially, in this study, software-defined radio (SDR) and RF sensing techniques were used to develop a breathing monitoring system. Minute variations in wireless channel state information (CSI) due to breathing movement were used to detect breathing abnormalities in breathing patterns. Furthermore, ML algorithms intelligently classified breathing abnormalities in single and multiple-person scenarios. The results were validated by referencing a wearable sensor. Finally, optimal feature scoring was used to improve the developed system's performance in terms of accuracy, training time, and prediction speed. Early diagnosis of dental caries progression can prevent invasive treatment and enable preventive treatment. In this regard, dental radiography is a widely used tool to capture dental visuals that are used for the detection and diagnosis of caries. Different deep learning (DL) techniques have been used to automatically analyse dental images for caries detection. However, most of these techniques require large-scale annotated data to train DL models. On the other hand, in clinical settings, such medical images are scarcely available and annotations are costly and time-consuming. To this end, we present an efficient self-training-based method for caries detection and segmentation that leverages a small set of labelled images for training the teacher model and a large collection of unlabelled images for training the student model. We also propose to use centroid cropped images of the caries region and different augmentation techniques for the training of self-supervised models that provide computational and performance gains as compared to fully supervised learning and standard self-supervised learning methods. We present a fully labelled dental radiographic dataset of 141 images that are used for the evaluation of baseline and proposed models. Our proposed self-supervised learning strategy has provided performance improvement of approximately 6% and 3% in terms of average pixel accuracy and mean intersection over union, respectively as compared to standard self-supervised learning. WiFi sensing has received recent and significant interest from academia, industry, healthcare professionals, and other caregivers (including family members) as a potential mechanism to monitor our aging population at a distance without deploying devices on users’ bodies. In particular, these methods have the potential to detect critical events such as falls, sleep disturbances, wandering behavior, respiratory disorders, and abnormal cardiac activity experienced by vulnerable people. The interest in such WiFi-based sensing systems arises from practical advantages including its ease of operation indoors as well as ready compliance from monitored individuals. Unlike other sensing methods, such as wearables, camera-based imaging, and acoustic-based solutions, WiFi technology is easy to implement and unobtrusive. This paper reviews the current state-of-the-art research on collecting and analyzing channel state information extracted using ubiquitous WiFi signals, describing a range of healthcare applications and identifying a series of open research challenges, including untapped areas of research and related trends. This work aims to provide an overarching view in understanding the technology and discusses its use-cases from a perspective that considers hardware, advanced signal processing, and data acquisition. This paper aims the development of a new reduced-cost algorithm for a multi-objective robust transmitter placement under uncertainty. Toward this end, we propose a new hybrid Kriging/Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO) approach combined with robust design optimization to estimate the set of Pareto frontier by searching robustness as well as accuracy (lower objective function) in a design space. We consider minimization of the energy power consumption for transmitting as well as maximization of signal coverage in a multi-objective robust optimization model. The reliability of the model to control signal overlap for multiple transmitting antennas is also provided. To smooth computational cost, the proposed method instead of evaluating all receiver test points in each optimization iteration approximates signal coverages using Kriging interpolation to obtain optimal transmitter positions. The results demonstrate the utility and the efficiency of the proposed method in rendering the robust optimal design and analyzing the sensitivity of the transmitter placement problem under practically less-expensive computational efforts (350% and 320% less than computational time elapsed using standalone GWO and NSGAII respectively). The development of ultra-dense heterogeneous networks (HetNets) will cause a significant rise in energy consumption with large-scale base station (BS) deployments, requiring cellular networks to be more energy efficient to reduce operational expense and promote sustainability. Cell switching is an effective method to achieve the energy efficiency goals, but traditional heuristic cell switching algorithms are computationally demanding with limited generalization abilities for ultra-dense HetNet applications, motivating the usage of machine learning techniques for adaptive cell switching. Graph neural networks (GNNs) are powerful deep learning models with strong generalization abilities but receive little attention for cell switching. This paper proposes a GNN-based cell switching solution (GBCSS) that has a smaller computational complexity than existing heuristic algorithms. The presented performance evaluation uses the Milan telecommunication dataset based on real-world call detail records, comparing GBCSS with a traditional exhaustive search (ES) algorithm, a state-of-the-art learning-based algorithm, and the baseline without cell switching. Results indicate that GBCSS achieves a 10.41% energy efficiency gain when compared with the baseline and achieves 75.76% of the optimal performance obtained with ES algorithm. The results also demonstrate GBCSS' significant scalability and generalization abilities to differing load conditions and the number of BSs, suggesting this approach is well-suited to ultra-dense HetNet deployment. Recent decades have witnessed the growing importance of human motion detection systems based on artificial intelligence (AI). The growing interest in human motion detection systems is the advantages of automation in the monitoring of patients remotely and giving warnings to doctors promptly. Currently, wearable devices are frequently used for human motion detection systems. However, such devices have several limitations, such as the elderly not wearing devices due to lack of comfort or forgetfulness and/or battery limitations. To overcome the problems of wearable devices, we propose an AI-driven human motion detection system (deep learning-based system) using channel state information (CSI) extracted from Radio Frequency (RF) signals. The main contribution of this paper is to improve the performance of the deep learning models through techniques, including structure modification and dimension reduction of the original data. In this work, We firstly collected the CSI data with the center frequency 5.32 GHz and implemented the structure of the basic deep learning network in our previous work. After that, we changed the basic deep learning network by increasing the depth, increasing the width, adapting some advanced network structures, and reducing dimensions. After finishing those modifications, we observed the results and analyzed how to further improve the deep learning performance of this contactless AI-enabled human motion detection system. Smart meters (SM) with wireless capabilities are one of the most meaningful applications of the Internet of Things. Standards like Zigbee have found a niche in transmitting data on energy usage to the user and the supplier wirelessly via these meters and communication hubs. There are still certain difficulties, notably in delivering wireless connectivity to meters situated in difficult-to-reach locations such as basements or deep indoors. To solve this issue, this paper investigates the usage of mesh networks at 868 MHz, particularly to increase coverage, and proposes an additional mounted antenna to significantly increase outside coverage while providing the necessary coverage extension for hard-to-reach indoor locations. Extensive measurements were made in Newbury in both suburban and open environments for validation and delivery of a simple statistical model for the 868 MHz band in United Kingdom conurbations. Results presented in this paper estimate that mesh networks at 868 MHz can accommodate large areas constituting several SMs with the proposed coverage extension method. A study of the behavior of NB-IoT wireless communication in an industrial indoor environment was conducted in this paper. With Wireless Insite software, a scenario in the industrial sector was simulated and modeled. Our research examined how this scenario or environment affected the communication parameters of NB-IoT's physical layer. In this context, throughput levels among terminals as well as between terminals and transceiver towers, the power received at signal destination points, signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) in the environment, and distances between terminals and transceivers are considered. These simulated results are also compared with the calculated or theoretical values of these parameters. The results show the effect of the industrial setting on wireless communication. Due to the cell size decrements and limited sojourn time on a high speed train mobility, unnecessary handovers (HOs) occur, which can lead to higher network communication costs, and affect passengers quality of service (QoS). This paper proposes a novel blockchain‐enabled privacy preserving HO skipping framework by using train mobility dataset from the city of London. Using a complex dataset parameters, passenger traffic flows are modelled by averaging various train lines and station's footfall numbers utilising blockchain to maintain privacy. The framework stores pseudonym addresses in order to track the path of users. The proposed framework allows for a better trade‐off in terms of 2% (approx.) gain in average throughput, over 100% gain in the last‐hop signal quality, and a 50% reduction in HO costs, while also addressing the needs for resources to operate the blockchain. The elderly population is growing, and the healthcare system is experiencing a strain on services provided to the elderly. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has increased this strain and has resulted in an increased risk of exposure during visits to elderly homes, increasing the desire to provide technological solutions to counteract this. Currently, there lack reliable real-time noninvasive sensing systems. This article makes use of radio-frequency (RF) sensing, where signal propagation is observed in channel state information (CSI) reports on activities of daily living (ADLs). Real-time data have been collected for three classifications: “movement,” “empty room,” and “no activity,” A filter is applied to reduce the noise of the CSI data. Then the mean, max, min, kurtosis, skew, and standard deviation features are extracted from the CSI data. A machine-learning model provides a classification for the real-time monitoring system allowing the detection of abnormalities in the expected ADLs of the elderly. The timing of classifications gives insights into the real-time capabilities of the system. The random forest algorithm is chosen to create the machine-learning model based on accuracy and timing capabilities. In this paper, the cell-free massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) network is affected by the pilot contamination phenomenon when a large number of users and a small number of available pilots exists, the quality of service (QoS) will deteriorate due to the low accuracy of the channel estimation because some of users will use the same pilot. Therefore, we address this problem by presenting two novel schemes of pilot assignment and pilot power control design based on the matching technique for the uplink of cell-free massive MIMO systems to maximize spectral efficiency. We first formulate an assignment optimization problem in order to find the best possible pilot sequence to be used by utilizing genetic algorithm (GA) and then propose a Hungarian matching algorithm to solve this formulated problem. Regarding the power control design, we formulate a minimum-weighted assignment problem to assign pilot power control coefficients to the estimated channel's minimum mean-squared error by considering the access point (AP) selection. Then, we also propose the Hungarian algorithm to solve this problem. Simulation results show that our proposed schemes outperform the state-of-the-art techniques concerning both the pilot assignment and the pilot power control design by achieving a 15% improvement in the spectral efficiency. This article provides a new benchmark dataset for 3-D point cloud classification in which the manually labeled human activity data exceeds 100 point clouds per frame and is capable of meeting the training needs for data-intensive learning approaches. In this study, a case study is considered for evaluating the benchmark using a deep long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network, which demonstrated a significant performance improvement over the state-of-the-art human activity recognition (HAR) area. To date, numerous types of collection devices have been used in the recognition of human activities. However, due to the scarcity of training data, the task of 3-D point cloud labeling has not yet made significant progress. To overcome this challenge, it is aimed to deduce this data requirements gap, allowing deep-learning methods to reach their full potential in 3-D point cloud tasks. The dataset used for this process is comprised of dense point clouds acquired with the static ground sensor by the NodeNs company-supported multiple input multiple output (MIMO) radar (NodeNs ZERO 60 GHz IQ radar). It contains multiple types of human being data ranging from one to four individuals and encompasses a range of human action scenarios, including standing, sitting, picking up, falling, and walking. Furthermore, it also investigated sensor locations and requirements for human being data collection that is from a single subject to multiple subjects, as well as identified and analyzed various sensing devices and applications that collect activity data. In this regard, a thorough study is conducted on several benchmark datasets, examining sensors, characteristics, activity categories, and other data. Finally, it compares and analyzes the activity recognition methods used in several benchmark datasets based on the current study. Unlike existing devices, the new NodeNs sensor provides more accessible and straightforward point cloud data to capture human movement information. Respiration monitoring plays a vital role in human health monitoring, as it is an essential indicator of vital signs. Respiration monitoring can help determine the physiological state of the human body and provide insight into certain illnesses. Recently, noncontact respiratory illness sensing methods have drawn much attention due to user acceptance and great potential for real-world deployment. Such methods can reduce stress on healthcare facilities by providing modern digital health technologies. This digital revolution in the healthcare sector will provide inexpensive and unobstructed solutions. Noncontact respiratory illness sensing is effective, as it does not require users to carry devices and avoids privacy concerns. The primary objective of this research work is to develop a system for continuous real-time sensing of respiratory illnesses. In this research work, the noncontact software-defined radio (SDR)-based RF technique is exploited for respiratory illness sensing. The developed system measures respiratory activity imprints on channel state information (CSI). For this purpose, an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transceiver is designed, and the developed system is tested for single-person and multiperson cases. Nine respiratory illnesses are detected and classified using machine learning (ML) algorithms with a maximum accuracy of 99.7% for a single-person case. Three respiratory illnesses are detected and classified with a maximum accuracy of 93.5% and 88.4% for two-person and three-person cases, respectively. The research provides an intelligent, accurate, continuous, and real-time solution for respiratory illness sensing. The problem of Lip-reading has become an important research challenge in recent years. The goal is to recognise speech from lip movements. Most of the Lip-reading technologies developed so far are camera-based, which require video recording of the target. However, these technologies have well-known limitations of occlusion and ambient lighting with serious privacy concerns. Furthermore, vision-based technologies are not useful for multi-modal hearing aids in the coronavirus (COVID-19) environment, where face masks have become a norm. This paper aims to solve the fundamental limitations of camera-based systems by proposing a radio frequency (RF) based Lip-reading framework, having an ability to read lips under face masks. The framework employs Wi-Fi and radar technologies as enablers of RF sensing based Lip-reading. A dataset comprising of vowels A, E, I, O, U and empty (static/closed lips) is collected using both technologies, with a face mask. The collected data is used to train machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) models. A high classification accuracy of 95% is achieved on the Wi-Fi data utilising neural network (NN) models. Moreover, similar accuracy is achieved by VGG16 deep learning model on the collected radar-based dataset. This study aims to solve the fundamental limitations of camera-based systems by proposing a contactless and privacy-preserving radio frequency-based lip-reading framework, which can recognise lip movements under face masks. In this paper, we propose a hybrid beamforming architecture with constant phase shifters (CPSs) for uplink cell-free millimetre-wave (mm-Wave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems based on exploiting antenna selection to reduce power consumption. However, current antenna selection techniques are applied for conventional massive MIMO, not cell-free massive MIMO systems. Therefore, the enormous computational complexity of these techniques to optimally select antennas for cell-free massive MIMO networks is caused by numerous randomly distributed access points (APs) in the service area and their large antennas. The architecture proposed in this work solves this issue by employing a low-complexity matching technique to obtain the optimal number of antennas, chosen based on channel magnitude and by switching off antennas that contribute more to interference power than to desired signal power for each radio frequency (RF) chain at each AP, instead of assuming all RF chains at each AP have the same number of selected antennas. Therefore, an assignment optimization problem based on a bipartite graph is formulated for cell-free mm-Wave massive MIMO system uplinks. Then, the Hungarian method is proposed to solve this problem due to its ability to solve this assignment problem in a polynomial time. Simulated results show that, despite several APs and antennas, the proposed matching approach is more energy-efficient and has lower computational complexity than state-of-the-art schemes. LoRaWAN simulations are a flexible way to analyse the behaviour of this LPWAN technology in scenarios that are unfeasible to deploy due to their scale and the number of devices required. Parallel to this, there is also a continued lack of larger-scale LoRaWAN deployments in current literature. Crucially, none of these studies involves comparison with any theoretical model, such as discrete-time simulation or mathematical analysis, for validation. In this paper we deploy a 20 nodes LoRaWAN network around the University of Glasgow’s campus, analyse the results and then proceed to develop an NS-3 simulation to recreate and match as faithfully as possible the behaviour and topology of the physical deployment. The performance of both the deployment and the simulation is then compared, and the results show that while the complexity of the simulation is kept relatively low, it is possible to get simulation results within about 20% of the deployment results. Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces (IRS) show a revolutionary potential for wireless communications. In this paper, a single IRS is used to achieve distributed multi-user beamforming and interference-free transmission. We first establish the IRS assisted multi-user system model and formulate an optimization problem called multi-user linearly constrained minimum variance (MU-LCMV) beamformer, under the criterion of minimizing the overall received signal power subject to a certain level of power response (e.g., unit power response) at desired signal directions and arbitrary low power response (e.g., zero power response) at the interference directions. A closed-form amplitude-unconstrained phase-continuous (AUPC) solution is derived first, then an amplitude-constrained phase-continuous (ACPC) solution is obtained by using sequential quadratic programming (SQP). Given the solutions, the IRS beam pattern shows that to achieve multi-user ($N$ pairs of transceivers, $N > 1$) transmission through a single surface, up to $N-1$ redundant beams are generated, significantly affecting power efficiency. The directions of the redundant beams are mathematically derived. The effect of mutual coupling on IRS is also analyzed to show the characteristic of side lobes. Simulation results verify the existence and accuracy of the redundant beam directions. This work can potentially enhance state-of-the-art wireless communication systems ranging from transceiver design, system and architecture design, network deployment and self-organizing-network operations. With the advent of technological advancements and the widespread Internet connectivity during the last couple of decades, social media platforms (such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram) have consumed a large proportion of time in our daily lives. People tend to stay alive on their social media with recent updates, as it has become the primary source of interactionwithin social circles. Although social media platforms offer several remarkable features but are simultaneously prone to various critical vulnerabilities. Recent studies have revealed a strong correlation between the usage of social media and associated mental health issues consequently leading to depression, anxiety, suicide commitment, and mental disorder, particularly in the young adults who have excessively spent time on socialmedia which necessitates a thorough psychological analysis of all these platforms. This study aims to exploit machine learning techniques for the classification of psychotic issues based on Facebook status updates. In this paper, we start with depression detection in the first instance and then expand on analyzing six other psychotic issues (e.g., depression, anxiety, psychopathic deviate, hypochondria, unrealistic, and hypomania) commonly found in adults due to extreme use of social media networks. To classify the psychotic issues with the user's mental state, we have employed different Machine Learning (ML) classifiers i.e., Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Naïve Bayes (NB), and K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN). The usedMLmodels are trained and tested by using different combinations of features selection techniques. To observe themost suitable classifiers for psychotic issue classification, a cost-benefit function (sometimes termed as 'Suitability') has been used which combines the accuracy of the model with its execution time. Faster-than-Nyquist signaling (FTNS) has already been shown to increase the communication capacity on certain channels such as additive white Gaussian noise and block flat multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Rayleigh fading channels. The following issues, however, remain unresolved: 1) whether FTNS enables a capacity increase in generalized MIMO Rayleigh fading channels that are selective in time, frequency, and space; and 2) how channel selectivities affect the capacity and if present, the FTN capacity gain. To address the issues, this paper firstly investigates the ergodic capacity of MIMO-FTN transmission over triply-selective fading channels. We derive a low-complexity approximate capacity formula and also show how it degenerates in other channel models, such as doubly-selective single-input single-output fading channels, which can be considered as the special cases of triply-selective fading channels. The capacity evaluation results obtained under different channel conditions show that: 1) MIMO-FTN outperforms MIMO-Nyquist in terms of capacity; 2) the FTN gains are nearly consistent, while the FTN gains obtained in the frequency-selective fading channels are slightly higher than those obtained in the flat fading channels. An ultrawide bandwidth (UWB) antenna for ground-penetrating radar (GPR) applications is designed to check soil moisture and provide good-quality images of metallic targets hidden in the soil. GPR is a promising technology for detecting and identifying buried objects, such as landmines, and investigating soil in terms of moisture content and contamination. A paddle-shaped microstrip antenna is created by cutting a rectangular patch at one of its diametrical edges fed by the coplanar waveguide technique. The antenna is loaded by stubs, shorting pins, and a split-ring resonator (SRR) metamaterial structure to increase the antenna's gain and enhance the bandwidth (BW) towards both the lower and higher end of the working BW. The antenna's performance in soil inspection is studied in terms of the operating frequency range, different types of soil, different distances (e.g., 50 cm) between the antenna arrays and soil, S-parameters, and gain. Following this, the antenna's ability to find a metallic target in the soil is tested, considering different array numbers, multi-targets, and locations. The antenna is designed on a thin layer of economic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) substrate with dimensions 50 × 39 × 0.508 mm3 and works in the frequency range 1.9–9.2 GHz. In addition, two more resonances at 0.9 and 1.8 GHz are also achieved; hence, the antenna works for more than two application bands, such as the ISM- and L-bands. The measurement results validated excellent agreement with the simulated results. Furthermore, the recommended antenna offering a high gain of about 10.8 dBi and maximum efficiency above 97% proved able to discriminate between hidden objects and even recognize their shapes. For vehicle-to-network communications, handover (HO) management enables vehicles to maintain the connection with the network while transiting through coverage areas of different base stations (BSs). However, the high mobility of vehicles means shorter connection periods with each BS that leads to frequent HOs, hence raises the necessity for optimal HO decision making for high quality infotainment services. Machine learning is capable of capturing underlying pattern via data driven methods to find optimal solutions to complex problems, and much learning-based HO optimization research has been conducted focusing on specific network setups. However, attention still needs to be paid to the actual deployment aspect and standardized datasets or simulation environments for evaluation. This paper proposes a deep reinforcement learning-based HO algorithm using the input parameters that are configurable in the existing measurement report of cellular networks. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated using the well-known network simulator ns-3 with its official LTE module. A realistic network setup in the city center of Glasgow (U.K.) is configured with vehicle trajectories generated by the routes mobility model using Google Maps Directions API. Evaluation results reveal that the proposed algorithm significantly outperforms the A3 RSRP baseline with an average of 25.72% packet loss reduction per HO, suggesting significant improvement in quality of service of phone call and video streaming, etc. The proposed algorithm also has a small implementation cost compared to some state-of-the-art and should be deployed by a software update to a local BS controller. Diagonal loading is one of the most widely used and effective methods to improve the robustness of both adaptive beamformers and Direction of Arrival (DOA) estimation due to the involvement of the sensor received covariance matrix. In addition, subspace-based DOA estimation techniques rely on multiple snapshots to achieve high estimation accuracies. This paper presents the study of a modified diagonally loaded sample covariance matrix for accurate DOA estimation in adverse scenarios. The proposed and novel technique deciphers poor DOA estimation in a low SNR environment by computationally changing the received sample covariance matrix. Our method is computationally simple as it does not require peak searching and does not depend on the coherency of the signal. The efficacy of the proposed method is examined via computer simulation for various sensor array sizes and the number of snapshot samples. Based on our numerical simulation results, our proposed method generally outperforms most state-of-the-art DOA estimators. In a finite number of snapshots and a single signal source, our proposed method performs 9.5% better than the state-of-the-art DOA estimation technique, 2.8% in multiple signal sources, and 8.5% in a single snapshot, single signal source environment of gained DOA estimation performance. This paper presents a millimeter-wave direction of arrival estimation (DoA) technique powered by dynamic aperture optimization. The frequency-diverse medium in this work is a lens-loaded oversized mmWave cavity that hosts quasi-random wave-chaotic radiation modes. The presence of the lens is shown to confine the radiation within the field of view and improve the gain of each radiation mode; hence, enhancing the accuracy of the DoA estimation. It is also shown, for the first time, that a lens loaded-cavity can be transformed into a lens-loaded dynamic aperture by introducing a mechanically controlled mode-mixing mechanism inside the cavity. This work also proposes a way of optimizing this lens-loaded dynamic aperture by exploiting the mode mixing mechanism governed by a machine learning-assisted evolutionary algorithm. The concept is verified by a series of extensive simulations of the dynamic aperture states obtained via the machine learning-assisted evolutionary optimization technique. Designing an ultra-wideband array antenna for fifth generation (5G) is challenging for the antenna designing community because of the highly fragmented electromagnetic spectrum. To overcome bandwidth limitations, several millimeter-wave bands for 5G and beyond applications are considered; as a result, many antenna arrays have been proposed during the past decades. This paper aims to explore recent developments and techniques regarding a specific type of phased array antenna used in 5G applications, called current sheet array (CSA). CSA consists of capacitively coupled elements placed over a ground plane, with mutual coupling intentionally introduced in a controlled manner between the elements. CSA concept evolved and led to the realization of new array antennas with multiple octaves of bandwidth. In this review article, we provide a comprehensive overview of the existing works in this line of research. We analyze and discuss various aspects of the proposed array antennas with the wideband and wide-scan operation. Additionally, we discuss the significance of the phased array antenna in 5G communication. Non-invasive indoor human activity detection using radio waves has attracted the interest of researchers, contributing to a range of new applications including smart healthcare. Localisation of activities can assist in developing advanced healthcare systems able to identify the location of patients. Radio frequencies have been shown in numerous studies as a non-invasive method to identify human activity. This is achieved by observing the signal propagation described in the Channel State Information (CSI). This paper presents experimental results using Universal Software-Defined Radio Peripheral (USRP) devices to identify and localise a single human subject performing activities by utilizing the CSI of radio frequencies. The experiments are carried out to retrieve CSI samples observing a single subject perform no-activity, sitting, standing, and leaning forward actions in various positions in a room. Additional CSI is captured for the subject walking in two directions across the observed area. Giving a total of 6 activities spanning the monitored area. CSI is also collected while the monitored area is empty for further comparison. Artificial intelligence is used to make classifications on collected CSI. The proposed approach uses a Super Learner (SL) algorithm that can identify the location of different activities with 96% accuracy, outperforming existing benchmark approaches. In this paper, a compact, efficient and easy to fabricate wearable antenna integrated with Artificial Magnetic Conductor (AMC) is presented. Addition of slots and bevels/cuts in the rectangular monopole patch antenna yield a wide bandwidth along with band notches. The proposed antenna is backed with an AMC metasurface that changes the bidirectional radiation pattern to a unidirectional, thus, considerably reducing the Specific Absorption Ratio (SAR). The demonstrated antenna has a good coverage radiating away from the body and presents reduced radiation towards the body with a front-to-back ratio of 13 dB and maximum gain of 3.54 dB. The proposed design operates over a wide frequency band of 2.9 to 12 GHz (exceeding the designated 3.1-10.6 GHz Ultra-Wideband (UWB) band). The band notches were created using slots on the radiating patch in the sub-bands from 5.50 to 5.67 GHz and 7.16 to 7.74 GHz. The overall dimensions of the structure are 33 x 33 x 6.75 mm³. The antenna's radiation performance increased considerably with the addition of the AMC layer. The SAR values for the antenna are reduced by 85.3% when the AMC is used and are 0.083 W/kg which is well below the FCC SAR limits. The simple design, miniaturized profile, low SAR and wide operating bands with multiple band notches make the presented antenna an appealing choice for several UWB wearable body area network (WBAN) applications. This paper presents a framework for achieving machine learning (ML)‐assisted direction‐of‐arrival (DoA) accuracy enhancement using a millimetre‐wave (mmWave) dynamic aperture. The technique used for the enhanced DoA estimation accuracy leverages an over‐sized lens‐loaded cavity antenna connected to a single RF chain in the physical layer and a computational method in the computational layer of the framework. It is shown for the first time that by introducing a reconfigurable mode‐mixing mechanism inside the over‐sized lens‐loaded cavity hardware, a greater number of spatially orthogonal radiation modes can be achieved giving rise to many cavity states. If the best cavity state is determined and selected by means of design exploration using a contemporary ML‐assisted antenna optimisation method, the computational DoA estimation accuracy can be improved. The mode‐mixing mechanism in this work is a randomly oriented metallic scatterer located inside an over‐sized constant−ϵr lens‐loaded cavity, connected to a stepper motor that is electronically controlled by inputs from the computational layer of the presented framework. Measurement results in terms of near‐field radiation mode scans are included in this study to verify and validate that the proposed ML‐assisted framework enhances the DoA estimation accuracy. Moreover, this investigation simultaneously provides a simplification in the physical layer implementation of mmWave radio hardware, and DoA accuracy enhancement, which in turn lends itself favourably to the adoption of the proposed framework for channel sounding in mmWave communication systems. Achieving accurate single snapshot direction of arrival (DOA) information significantly improves communication performance. This paper investigates an accurate and high-resolution DOA estimation technique by enabling single snapshot data collection and enhancing DOA estimation results compared to multiple snapshot methods. This is carried out by manipulating the incoming signal covariance matrix while suppressing undesired additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) by actively updating and estimating the antenna array manifold vector. We demonstrated the estimation performance in simulation that our proposed technique supersedes the estimation performance of existing state-of-the-art techniques in various signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) scenarios and single snapshot sampling environments. Our proposed covariance-based single snapshot (CbSS) technique yields the lowest root-mean-squared error (RMSE) against the true DOA compared to root-MUSIC and the partial relaxation (PR) approach for multiple snapshots and a single signal source environment. In addition, our proposed technique presents the lowest DOA estimation performance degradation in a multiple uncorrelated and coherent signal source environment by up to 25.5% with nearly negligible bias. Lastly, our proposed CbSS technique presents the best DOA estimation results for a single snapshot and single-source scenario with an RMSE of 0.05 ° against the true DOA compared to root-MUSIC and the PR approach with nearly negligible bias as well. A potential application for CbSS would be in a scenario where accurate DOA estimation with a small antenna array form factor is a limitation, such as in the intelligent transportation system industry and wireless communication. Flying ad hoc network (FANET) is an application of 5G access network, which consists of unmanned aerial vehicles or flying nodes with scarce resources and high mobility rates. This paper proposes a deep Q-network (DQN)-based vertical routing scheme to select routes with higher residual energy levels and lower mobility rates across network planes (i.e., macro-plane, pico-plane, and femto-plane), which has not been investigated in the literature. The main motivation behind this work is to address frequent link disconnections and network partitions in order to enhance network performance. The 5G access network has a central controller (CC) and distributed controllers (DCs) in different network planes. The proposed scheme is a hybrid approach that allows CC and DCs to exchange information among themselves, and handle global and local information, respectively. The proposed scheme is suitable for highly dynamic ad hoc FANETs, and it enables data communication between UAVs in various applications, such as monitoring and performing surveillance of borders, and targeted-based operations (e.g., object tracking). Vertical routing is performed over a clustered network, in which clusters are formed across different network planes to provide inter-plane and inter-cluster communications. This helps to offload data traffic across different network planes to enhance network lifetime. Compared to the traditional reinforcement learning approach, the proposed DQN-based vertical routing scheme has shown to increase network lifetime by up to 60 % , reduce energy consumption by up to 20 % , and reduce the rate of link breakages by up to 50 % . Industry 4.0 is a new paradigm of digitalization and automation that demands high data rates and real-time ultra-reliable agile communication. Industrial communication at sub-6 GHz industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) bands has some serious impediments, such as interference, spectral congestion, and limited bandwidth. These limitations hinder the high throughput and reliability requirements of modern industrial applications and mission-critical scenarios. In this paper, we critically assess the potential of the 60 GHz millimeter-wave (mmWave) ISM band as an enabler for ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) in smart manufacturing, smart factories, and mission-critical operations in Industry 4.0 and beyond. A holistic overview of 60 GHz wireless standards and key performance indicators are discussed. Then the review of 60 GHz smart antenna systems facilitating agile communication for Industry 4.0 and beyond is presented. We envisage that the use of 60 GHz communication and smart antenna systems are crucial for modern industrial communication so that URLLC in Industry 4.0 and beyond could soar to its full potential. In this letter, we investigate the performance of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted communications, under the assumption of generalized Gaussian noise (GGN), over Rayleigh fading channels. Specifically, we consider an RIS, equipped with $N$ reflecting elements, and derive a novel closed-form expression for the symbol error rate (SER) of arbitrary modulation schemes. The usefulness of the derived new expression is that it can be used to capture the SER performance in the presence of special additive noise distributions such as Gamma, Laplacian, and Gaussian noise. These special cases are also considered and their associated asymptotic SER expressions are derived, and then employed to quantify the achievable diversity order of the system. The theoretical framework is corroborated by numerical results, which reveal that the shaping parameter of the GGN ($\alpha $) has a negligible effect on the diversity order of RIS-assisted systems, particularly for large $\alpha $ values. Faster-than-Nyquist signaling (FTNS) has emerged as a promising technique to increase communication capacity in bandwidth-limited channels. However, the presence of FTN-induced inter-symbol interference (FTN-ISI) in the received observations, is detrimental to channel estimation (CE) and data detection in terms of computational complexity and performance. This paper copes with these problems by incorporating linear pre-equalization (LPE) and composite precoding formed by linear spectral precoding and Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP), into the FTNS. Specifically, LPE completely pre-equalizes the FTN-ISI, while spectral precoding resolves the LPE-caused signal spectral broadening by introducing proper artificial ISI, which is pre-equalized by THP. Channel-induced ISI, as the only ISI component in the observations, is estimated and equalized using the classical frequency-domain low-complexity schemes. We show that there are four advantages of the LPE-aided CE over the CE designed for the FTN transmissions without FTN-ISI pre-equalization, namely lower pilot overhead, simpler yet optimal pilot sequence design, lower mean-squared error of CE, and more robust against the FTN-ISI. Climate change, conventional agricultural management practices, and increasing water scarcity pose a major threat to agricultural production and biodiversity as well as environmental sustainability. Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) is recognized as an efficient, sustainable, and feasible agricultural system that plays a vital role in addressing the potential impacts of climate change in Pakistan. First-hand information was collected from 450 farm households in 24 villages from Okara, Sahiwal, and Khanewal irrigation divisions, having various wheat-based cropping systems of Pakistan. This includes rice–wheat (RW), maize-wheat (MW), and cotton-wheat (CW) cropping systems in the Lower Bari Doab Canal (LBDC) irrigation system. This study estimated and compared the sustainability and efficiency analysis of CSA and conventional agricultural practices. This study also estimated the impact of water-smart practices of the CSA, technical training, and groundwater quality on agricultural production by using production function and bootstrap truncated regression. The findings of this study revealed that adopters of CSA of the wheat-based cropping systems have higher economic benefits and improved resource use efficiencies compared to the conventional farmers. The findings of the study also revealed the increased efficiency of CSA adopters over other two systems in CW cropping system. The water-smart practices of CSA, access to credit, technical training, use of groundwater of varying quality, and other inputs also showed variations in the agricultural production and resource use efficiency. It has been concluded that farmers can earn more profit, save inputs (such as water), and increase their production by adopting water-smart practices of CSA. Hence, the government and other relevant institutions should devise and implement policies that adequately addressed the importance and enhance the use of water-smart practices of CSA in Punjab and beyond. The addition of massive machine type communication (mMTC) as a category of Fifth Generation (5G) of mobile communication, have increased the popularity of Internet of Things (IoT). The sensors are one of the critical component of any IoT device. Although the sensors posses a well-known historical existence, but their integration in wireless technologies and increased demand in IoT applications have increased their importance and the challenges in terms of design, integration, etc. This survey presents a holistic (historical as well as architectural) overview of wireless sensor (WS) nodes, providing a classical definition, in-depth analysis of different modules involved in the design of a WS node, and the ways in which they can be used to measure a system performance. Using the definition and analysis of a WS node, a more comprehensive classification of WS nodes is provided. Moreover, the need to form a wireless sensor network (WSN), their deployment, and communication protocols is explained. The applications of WS nodes in various use cases have been discussed. Additionally, an overlook of challenges and constraints that these WS nodes face in various environments and during the manufacturing process, are discussed. Their main existing developments which are expected to augment the WS nodes, to meet the requirements of the emerging systems, are also presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
