Objective. To study the association among congenital heart diseases (CHD) in children, the malnutrition risk and the risk of death. Material and methods. Four hundred and four clinical files of children which were submitted in the intensive care unit for cyanotic and non cyanotic CHD and 292 children with another pathology, were studied. The nutritional status of the three groups was evaluated using the weight/height index and the nutrition risk index (NRI). Results. One hundred and twenty four (18%) children die. The malnourished children shown a risk of die (p < 0.01) higher than the well nourished and the cyanotic CHD had a high malnutrition risk index and the risk of death was higher (p < 0.01) in the malnourished children. The malnutrition and death risk factors impacted more to acyanotic CHD children (OR = 5.50). The IRN identified to the malnutrition to 88.9% of global power test. Conclusion. The malnutrition is a death risk factor in children with CHD, with more impact in children with acyanotic CHD. The cyanotic CHD is a high risk factor to die for if alone, independently of the nutritional state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
