We examined body size, litter size and evidence for Bergmann's and Rensch's rules among eight closely related viviparous Phrynocephalus ( Agamidae) lineages from the Qinghai- Xizang ( Tibetan) Plateau. Mean snout-vent length and (relative) abdomen length was greater in females than males, whereas absolute and relative mean head size, fore - and hindlimb length was larger in males. These patterns suggest that body size may reflect sexual evolutionary conservatism. The lizards are smaller at higher elevations or in colder climates, representing the converse of Bergmann's rule. Absolute differences in female body size among taxa are not equal to the male differences among taxa. This results in a slope less than one when male size is regressed on female size, which allows rejection of Rensch's rule for this group. The female body size elevation-related cline was steeper than the corresponding male cline. Litter sizes were both smaller and less variable at higher elevations. These elevational clines remained after application of phylogenetic comparative methods, indicating that ecological processes play a more important role than phylogeny in shaping patterns of size and reproductive variation in these lizards. It is suggested that seasonal activity and temperature are important environmental factors that contribute to the converse Bergmann's cline, while fecundity selection in females and sex-specific differential-plasticity likely explain why patterns do not conform to Rensch's rule. Aims: Grap2 and cyclin-D interacting protein (GCIP) is a putative tumour suppressor in human cancer. The aim was to investigate its prognostic significance in human breast carcinoma. Methods and results: Immunohistochemical analysis of breast carcinoma specimens from 107 female patients was performed. Decreased cytoplasmic expression of GCIP was detected in breast carcinomas compared with normal ductal epithelium ( P < 0.001). Higher GCIP scores were observed in patients with lower histological grade, mucinous carcinomas and better clinical outcome ( P < 0.05). Disease-free survival was significantly longer in patients with high GCIP scores than in those with low GCIP scores ( P = 0.010). However, GCIP expression was independent of the status of oestrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, Her-2/neu and cancer stage. Moreover, in patients receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy, those with higher GCIP scores showed potentially more reduction of tumour size compared with those with lower GCIP scores (borderline significance, P = 0.053). Conclusions: The current data provide evidence that decreased expression of GCIP in vivo is present in human breast carcinoma and indicate that GCIP is a potential indicator of good prognosis. Galectin-1 (Gal-1), a homodimeric prototype of the galectins with a single carbohydrate-recognition domain, was recently identified as being overexpressed in tumor-associated capillary endothelial cells. The role of Gal-1 in endothelial cellular functions and the mechanism of action of Gal-1 remain unknown. Neuropilin-1 (NRP1) is a neuronal receptor that mediates repulsive growth cone guidance, and NRP1 functions in endothelial cells as a coreceptor (with vascular endothelial growth factor receptors (VEGFRs)) for VEGF165. In this study, we found that Gal-1 was overexpressed in the tumor-associated endothelial cells of oral squamous cell carcinomas (P<0.001). Gal-1 increased the proliferation and adhesion of endothelial cells, and enhanced cell migration in combination with VEGF165. Surprisingly, Gal-1 selectively bound NRP1 via the carbohydrate-recognition domain, but did not bind VEGFR-1, VEGFR-2 or VEGFR-3. The Gal-1–NRP1 interaction mediated the migration and adhesion of endothelial cells. The binding of Gal-1 to NRP1 enhanced VEGFR-2 phosphorylation and stimulated the activation of the mitogen activated protein (MAP) kinases SAPK1/JNK (stress activated protein kinase-1/c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase). Objectives Psoriasis is common in childhood. The aim of this study was to present the clinical and epidemiological profile of childhood psoriasis in China. Methods A total of 277 childhood psoriasis patients younger than 16 years old were enrolled. Statistical analysis and heritability were performed using EPI INFO 6.0,spss 10.0 and Falconer's method. Results The median age was 11 years. The male : female ratio was 1 : 1.13. The median age of onset was 10 years. Of the patients, 48.7% had previous episodes of psoriasis. Of the 277 children with psoriasis, 68.6% had plaque-type psoriasis, 28.9% had guttate psoriasis, 1.1% presented pustular forms of psoriasis and 1.4% had erythroderma. The extensor surface of the extremities was the most frequently affected site in our patients, followed by the appearance of lesions on the scalp. A positive family history of psoriasis was found in 34.3% patients. The prevalence of psoriasis in first- and second-degree relatives was 7.0% and 1.0%, respectively. The heritability of psoriasis in first- and second-degree relatives was 72.67% and 55.18%, respectively. To investigate whether lung cancer clusters in families in a high incidence county of China, an analysis was conducted using data on domestic fuel history and tobacco use for family members of 740 deceased lung cancer probands and 740 controls (probands' spouses). Lung cancer prevalence was compared among first-degree relatives of probands and of controls, taking into account various factors using logistic regression and generalised estimating equations. First-degree relatives of probands, compared with those of controls, showed an excess risk of lung cancer (odds ratio (OR)=2.05, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.68-2.53). Overall, female relatives of probands had a greater risk than did their male counterparts, and the risk was 2.90-fold for parents of probands as compared with parents of spouses. Female relatives of probands had 2.67-fold greater risk than female controls. Lung cancer risk was particularly marked among mothers (OR=3.78, 95% CI: 2.03-7.12). Having two or more affected relatives was associated with a 2.69-5.40-fold risk increase. The risk elevation was also found for other cancers overall. Results confirm previous findings of a genetic predisposition to lung cancer, and also imply that lung cancer may share a genetic background with other cancers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Constitutively activated signal transducers and activators of transcription (STAT) factors, in particular STAT1, STAT3 and STAT5, have been demonstrated in a variety of human tumours and cancer cell lines. However, data on the expression of these STATs in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) are limited. In this study, the expression patterns of STAT1, STAT3 and STAT5 were immunohistochemically examined on the archival specimens from 61 patients with NPC. Staining results of each STATs were then correlated with the clinical parameters and prognosis of these patients. The results showed that constitutive activation of STAT3 and STAT5 was detected in the majority, 70.5 and 62.3%, respectively, of the 61 tumour specimens. Furthermore, coexpression of activated STAT3 and STAT5 was found in 54.1% of the specimens. In contrast, constitutive activated STAT1 could only be detected in 8 (13.1%) cases. Surprisingly, following radiotherapy, patients with constitutive STAT5 activation, or activation of both STAT3 and STAT5, had better disease-free survival and overall survival than those without activated STAT5. Follicular dendritic cell tumours are very rare neoplasms that often occur in lymph nodes. We report here a case in the colon, a hitherto unreported site, in a 37-year-old female. The differentiation from gastrointestinal stromal tumour is emphasized. The tumour was tan, elastic and solid with surface ulceration. Microscopically, it was composed of oval to spindle tumour cells with syncytial cytoplasm arranged in fascicular and whorled patterns. There were many infiltrating lymphocytes. The histological appearance resembled gastrointestinal stromal tumour, thymoma or meningioma. Distinct from the stromal tumour, the lymph node was also involved by the tumour. Immunohistochemically, the tumour cells were positive for CD21, CD35 and CD68, but negative for cytokeratin, CD34, smooth muscle actin, desmin, S100 protein, epithelial membrane antigen, leukocyte common antigen, HMB-45 and c-kit. In-situ hybridization study was negative for Epstein–Barr virus RNA sequences. Ultrastructurally, the tumour cells possessed cytoplasmic processes joined by desmosomes. This entity should be considered in the list of differential diagnoses for gastrointestinal stromal tumour. The distribution pattern of certain monosaccharides in the epithelial cells of the hamster buccal pouch was studied during carcinoma development induced by 9,10-dimethyl-1,2-benzathrancene (DMBA). An avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex (ABC) immunohistochemical technique with high affinity biotinylated lectins was employed to identify monosaccharides. Lectins used in this experiment included Concanavalin A (Con A), for identifying mannose or glucose, Ricinus communis agglutinin I(RCA-I), for identifying galactose, and Ulex europaeus agglutinin I(UEA-I), for identifying fucose. The results show that in normal buccal pouch epithelial cells, fuctose or galactose were concentrated predominantly on the cellular membrane, while mannose and glucose were distributed in the cytoplasm. In the epithelial cells undergoing neoplastic transformation induced by DMBA, most cells showed decreased staining of the above-mentioned monosaccharides, while in other areas the cells were heavily stained. However, the most striking change which occurred was that galactose and fucose shifted from the cellular membrane to the intracytoplasmic area during the malignant transformation. Thus, the changes of anatomic location and intensity of staining of monosaccharides in the buccal pouch epithelium may be used as a criteria for early histochemical diagnosis of malignant transformation. Langerhans cells have been found in cholesteatomas for many years. It is believed that they are immunocompetent cells and have the same role in cell-mediated immunologic mechanisms in cholesteatoma as well as in skin. This study used the transmission electron microscope to observe the cellular characteristics of Langerhans cells and the apposition phenomenon of Langerhans cells with lymphocyte-like cells in human middle ear cholesteatomatous tissue. These findings are evidence for cell-mediated immune responses in middle ear cholesteatomas. In vitro Langerhans cells conditioned medium prepared from Lewis rat skin was used to show its effects on protein synthesis and the differentiation of basal cells. Since the cellular behaviour of basal cells is important in the development and pathogenesis of cholesteatoma, the present study shows that Langerhans cells may have some role in the clinical formation of a cholesteatoma. Since cells extracted from rat skin may have a different response from that of cells from human middle ear cholesteatoma, further investigations are necessary to compare the biological effects of both tissues. : Churg–Strauss syndrome (CSS), or allergic granulomatous angiitis, is an uncommon vasculitic syndrome that is found mainly in middle-aged adults. We describe a 15-year-old girl with CSS, diagnosed by histological findings and characteristic clinical features. The patient experienced two episodes of catastrophic gastrointestinal vasculitis, resulting in resection of 150 cm of small intestine and right hemicolectomy. Colonoscopic examination showed multiple colonic ulcers with active bleeding. The clinical course of the patient was grave and refractory to the therapy of steroid and cytotoxic drugs. In the world literature only two patients with multiple colonic ulcers caused by CSS have been reported, and very rare cases of childhood-onset CSS have been published. Proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) is a nuclear protein synthesized in the late G1 and S phase of the cell cycle which can be detected immunohistochemically in paraffin-embedded tissue as a useful marker for the proliferating fraction of cells in tissue specimens. Thirty-eight cases of oral squamous cell carcinoma were studied in groups according to clinical staging and histological grading (UICC system), these included 5 cases of T1, 13 cases of T2, and 20 cases of T3, and 19 cases of Gl, 12 cases of G2, and 7 cases of G3. The mean percentage of PCNA positively stained tumor cells in this series was 29.2. The mean percentages of PCNA-positive cells in each stage and grade were: T1 (13.7%), T2 (24.4%), and T3 (34.3%); GI (30.5%), G2 (24.8%), and G3 (33.2%). The results indicate that the percentage of PCNA positively stained tumor cells in oral squamous cell carcinoma was significantly greater when tumor size was larger than 2 cm (T1 versus T2/T3). However, there was no significant difference between T2 and T3. There was no correlation between the number of PCNA- stained tumor cells and histological grade. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
