Abstract: In hard rock TBM drilling, wear issues play a crucial role in the success of a tunnelling project. Thus, excavation tools must be selected carefully and be adapted to ground conditions. Wear‐related changes in the tools that occur over the course of the tools' operating lives must also be taken into account. This paper presents five basic types of macroscopic wear for cutter rings: (1) abrasive/normal wear, (2) tapering, (3) mushrooming, (4) brittle fracture of the cutter ring (special wear type 1) and (5) blockade of the roller bearing (special wear type 2). These basic wear types lead to distinct cutter ring shapes which allow deriving some fundamental characteristics of the interacting rock types. In addition, a microscopic analysis of the surfaces and associated metallographic sections from worn cutter tools has been performed. As a result, the tribological processes under the cutter, leading to tool wear, can be better understood. In summary, the investigations may contribute to a better understanding to make it easier to choose the proper TBM disc cutter for a distinct rock type in order to minimize the risk of tool‐related downtimes. Performance prediction is one of the crucial issues for estimating excavation costs and construction time of tunnel projects. In mechanized tunneling, TBM performance highly depends on achieved penetration rate and cutter wear. The aim of the research group ABROCK and the topic of this paper is the improvement of penetration prediction by performing on-site penetration tests. Therefore estimated parameters by two existing prediction models (Gehring model, Colorado School of Mines model) are compared with the results of penetration tests at Austrians large infrastructure project of the OeBB Koralm tunnel construction lot KAT2. Penetration tests are a common tool to determine the performance of a TBM in certain geological environments. During a test, the TBM is operated under defined conditions that allow the comparison of different tunnel projects and machine types in analogous geological conditions. Results show that only for a narrow scope, considered prediction models reveal appropriate fitting. Once the rock mass is fractured or the stress level within the rock mass changes, existing models are not applicable. This fact emphasizes the need of an update for penetration prediction models by implementing a correction factor for discontinuities and the stress state in a rock mass. This may result in a new prognosis model called Alpine model. Die Leistungsprognose ist einer der wichtigsten Aspekte für die Kalkulation von Baukosten und Bauzeiten bei Tunnelprojekten. Die Leistung einer TBM wird von der erreichten Penetration sowie dem auftretenden Werkzeugverschleiß bestimmt. Ziel der Forschungsgruppe ABROCK sowie Schwerpunkt dieses Beitrags ist es, existierende Penetrationsprognosemodelle mithilfe von Penetrationsversuchen auf Tunnelbaustellen zu verbessern. In diesem Beitrag werden die prognostizierten Penetrationswerte von zwei gebräuchlichen Modellen (Gehring Model, Colorado School of Mines Model) mit den Ergebnissen der Penetrationsversuche am großen österreichischen Infrastrukturprojekt der ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG, dem Koralmtunnel Baulos KAT2, verglichen. Der Penetrationsversuch ist eine häufig angewandte Methode, um die Leistung einer TBM in einem gewissen geologischen Umfeld zu bestimmen. Hierbei wird die Maschine unter definierten Bedingungen gefahren, wodurch ein Vergleich unterschiedlicher Tunnelprojekte sowie Maschinentypen bei entsprechenden geologischen Verhältnissen ermöglicht wird. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die untersuchten Prognosemodelle nur für einen sehr engen Anwendungsbereich zuverlässige Werte liefern. Sobald das Gebirge Trennflächen oder einen veränderten Spannungszustand aufweist, sind beide Ansätze nicht mehr brauchbar. Diese Tatsache zeigt deutlich, dass die existierenden Modelle adaptiert werden müssen, indem Korrekturfaktoren für das Trennflächengefüge sowie den Spannungszustand im Gebirge implementiert werden. Five universities from Austria, Germany and Switzerland, working intensively together with partners from the industry, client organisations, companies, consultants and TBM manufacturers, have combined to develop a new prognosis model for TBM advance rate and disc wear (the 'ALPINE MODEL'). This article presents some new results from the project. Fundamentally, the new model is to be a development of the model from Gehring, which calculates the penetration from the ratio of disc load to uniaxial compression strength. Since this equation was derived from data collected from a limited number of projects in the 1980s, it is of great importance to widen the data base and to establish a standardised process for this purpose. For on-site tests, the 'Start-stop-penetration test' is considered the most efficient and suitable method. This test can be carried out with the TBM in the course of tunnelling and thus results in little delay. In addition to the recording of TBM data during the penetration test, detailed geological documentation of the face and the tunnel sides has to be undertaken, accompanied by geomechanical laboratory tests. A large number of such penetration tests have now been carried out on various tunnel projects in order to validate and improve the basic formula. Some of the first results are described in this article. Further themes include the rock mechanical parameters to be used, the influence of the primary stress conditions at the face and the abrasiveness of the rock. Fünf Universitäten aus Österreich, Deutschland und der Schweiz, die intensive mit Partnern aus der Wirtschaft, Bauherren, Firmen, Ingenieurbüros und TBM Herstellern zusammenarbeiten, entwickeln gemeinsam ein neues Prognosemodell für die TBM Vortriebsleistung und den Rollenmeißel-Verschleiß (das 'ALPINE MODEL'). In diesem Artikel werden einige neue Ergebnisse dazu vorgestellt. Grundsätzlich soll das neue Modell wie das zugrunde liegende Modell von Gehring aufgebaut sein, dessen Basis aus der Berechnung der Penetration durch das Verhältnis von Diskenlast und Einaxialer Druckfestigkeit besteht. Nachdem diese Beziehung aus Daten abgeleitet ist, die in 1980er-Jahren aus einer beschränkten Anzahl von Projekten gesammelt wurden, ist es von unmittelbarer Bedeutung, diese Datenbasis auszuweiten und dafür ein Standardverfahren zu etablieren. Für Vor-Ort-Versuche wird der sog. 'Start-Stop-Penetrationsversuch' als effizienteste und geeignetste Methode angesehen. Dieser Versuch kann mit der TBM während des Vortriebs durchgeführt werden und führt daher nur zu sehr geringen Vortriebsverzögerungen. Neben der Aufzeichnung der TBM Vortriebsdaten während des Penetrationsversuchs muss eine detaillierte geologische Dokumentation der Ortsbrust und der Laibung sowie felsmechanische Laboruntersuchungen der Gesteine vorgenommen werden. Eine große Anzahl von solchen Penetrationsversuchen wurde bei unterschiedlichen Tunnelprojekten durchgeführt, um die Basis-Formel zu validieren bzw. zu verbessern. Einige erste Ergebnisse werden in diesem Artikel vorgestellt. The article reports on method for determining the abrasivity of rock by the CERCHAR abrasivity test as suggested by International Society for Rock Mechanics. Topics discussed include index test for classifying the abrasivity of a rock material, apparatus used such as stylus, grinder and measurement of stylus wear. Also presents a table depicting CERCHAR Abrasivity testing of pins.

Characterizing performance of tunnel boring machines (TBM) is important for numerous contractual and technical reasons. A common tool to determine machine performance in the field is the penetration test. The purpose of the penetration test is to operate the TBM for a defined period of time under normalized conditions that allow for interpretation and comparison between tests. The result of a penetration test is a thrust-penetration curve that reflects the excavatability of the rock mass. Prediction models use thrust-penetration curves to calculate the expected performance of a TBM in specific ground conditions. This paper provides a review of recent practice including testing at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) along with research by Villeneuve and Käsling. Each of these methods includes excavation at certain thrust levels and rotational speeds for a certain distance. These existing methods have a number of disadvantages that lead to fairly slow tests, which the proposed methodology aims to eliminate. Für eine Reihe von technischen und vertraglichen Fragestellungen ist die Charakterisierung der Leistung von Tunnelbohrmaschinen (TBM) von Bedeutung. Ein häufig genutztes Werkzeug, um die Bohrleistung einer TBM zu bestimmen, ist der Penetrationstest. Der Zweck eines solchen Tests ist, die TBM für eine gewisse Zeitdauer unter definierten Bedingungen zu betreiben, um so die Vergleichbarkeit zwischen verschiedenen Ergebnissen zu ermöglichen. Das Ergebnis eines Penetrationstests ist eine Penetrations-Kraft-Kurve, die es erlaubt, die Vortriebsleistung einer TBM unter bestimmten Gebirgseigenschaften zu prognostizieren. In diesem Beitrag werden die bisherigen Ansätze der Norwegischen Technischen Universität in Trondheim und Forschungsarbeiten von Villeneuve und Käsling beschrieben. Diesen Ansätzen ist gemein, dass die TBM über eine kleine Vortriebsstrecke bei verschiedenen Vortriebskräften und Bohrkopfdrehzahlen betrieben wird. Die beschriebenen Methoden haben aber auch eine Reihe von Nachteilen, die zu einer relativ langen Testdauer führen.
