This study was conducted to determine the relationship between possible clinical anxiety and depression, prenatal attachment, and risk perception in pregnancy in women who become pregnant again after perinatal loss. The study was designed as a descriptive and cross-sectional survey utilizing a correlational design. A total of 302 pregnant women were enlisted through purposive sampling methods for the survey. The data were collected from the pregnant women by using a pregnancy information form, hospital anxiety and depression scale, prenatal attachment inventory, and risk perception in pregnancy scale. Pearson correlations and multi-linear regression analyses were used to evaluate the study data. Women who became pregnant again after perinatal loss had a prenatal attachment score of 63.1 (SD 9.4) and a risk perception score of 60.3 (SD 36.9), while 64.2% (n = 194) of the pregnant women had severe anxiety, and 76.5% (n = 231) had severe depression. The study revealed a positive and highly significant relationship between pregnant women's risk perception of themselves and their baby and anxiety and a positive and moderately significant relationship with depression (p < 0.001). Furthermore, in women who became pregnant again after perinatal loss, severe anxiety and depression were important associated risk factors that increased the perception of pregnancy risk in 61% of cases (F = 239.889, p < 0.001). However, no relationship was found between pregnant women's prenatal attachment status and anxiety and depression (p > 0.05). It is recommended that health professionals evaluate the levels of prenatal attachment and risk perception in pregnancy, possible clinical anxiety, and depression in pregnant women with a history of prenatal loss and plan the care, education, and counseling based on the results of this investigation. Objectives: Fingolimod is approved in Turkey or the treatment of cases of multiple sclerosis (MS) which cannot be controlled with first-line treatments. There is limited information about its efficacy and safety in clinical practice in Turkey. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of fingolimod treatment in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis who were prescribed fingolimod by the Multiple Sclerosis specialists of Bursa Uludağ University Department of Neurology. Methods: This is a single-center observational study evaluating 142 patients using fingolimod who were followed up for at least 12 months in our center between April 2015 and October 2022. Efficacy results were evaluated in terms of mean number of attacks, annualized relapse rate, relapse-free patient rate, disease progression, clinical and radiological disease activity, and no evidence of disease activity (NEDA-3). The safety outcomes are the rates of treatment-related severe adverse events and patients' continuation rates. Results: Over 12 months of treatment with fingolimod, the average number of attacks decreased by 94.6%, the annual relapse rate decreased by 87%, and most patients did not relapse (83.1%). Alongside this, in 76.4% of cases, there was no disability progression and in 83.3% of cases, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) activation was not observed. Excluding replacement due to ineffectiveness, 89.4% of patients continued fingolimod therapy. Cardiac events, treatment-related infections and a decreased lymphocyte count were observed as side effects. Conclusion: In our center, switching from first-line treatments to fingolimod was effective in reducing disease activity in patients with multiple sclerosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Postpartum depression is one of the most common mental health disorders in women after giving birth. This study was conducted to examine the effect of telecounseling support on depression in primiparous mothers. This study was conducted as a randomized controlled trial with a parallel group pretest–posttest design. The study comprised 50 participants each in the intervention and control groups. Face‐to‐face interviews were conducted with all participants, and the Maternal Information Form and the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS) were administered. The intervention group received telecounseling for 6 weeks, while the control group received routine postnatal care. After the 6‐week period, EPDS was re‐administered to both groups. In the intervention group, the EPDS mean score decreased from 7.12 ± 3.96 to 6.34 ± 3.73 after telecounseling (p < 0.001). Conversely, in the control group, the EPDS mean score increased from 6.62 ± 3.55 to 7.90 ± 4.65 without any intervention (p = 0.002). The results indicate that telecounseling is an effective method for reducing the risk of depression among mothers during the postpartum period. Phospholipids (PLs), essential components of cell membranes, play significant roles in maintaining the structural integrity and functionality of joint tissues. One of the main components of synovial joint fluid (SJF) is PLs. Structures such as PLs that are found in low amounts in biological fluids may need to be selectively enriched to be analyzed. Monodisperse-mesoporous SiO2 microspheres were synthesized by a multi-step hydrolysis condensation method for the selective enrichment and separation of PLs in the SJF. The microspheres were characterized by SEM, XPS, XRD, and BET analyses. SiO2 microspheres had a 161.5 m2/g surface area, 1.1 cm3/g pore volume, and 6.7 nm pore diameter, which were efficient in the enrichment of PLs in the SJF. The extracted PLs with sorbents were analyzed using Q-TOF LC/MS in a gradient elution mode with a C18 column [2.1 × 100 mm, 2.5 μM, Xbridge Waters (Milford, MA, USA)]. An untargeted lipidomic approach was performed, and the phospholipid enrichment was successfully carried out using the proposed solid-phase extraction (SPE) protocol. Recovery of the SPE extraction of PLs using sorbents was compared to the classical liquid–liquid extraction (LLE) procedure for lipid extraction. The results showed that monodisperse-mesoporous SiO2 microspheres were eligible for selective enrichment of PLs in SJF samples. Background: In many societies, infertile couples use traditional practices. Objective: This study aimed to determine the complementary, supportive and traditional (CST) practices used by infertile women and their attitudes toward these practices. Methods: In this qualitative study, data were collected through individual interviews using a semi-structured form in December 2021. A total of 25 infertile women who applied to the in-vitro fertilization center of a hospital in Türkiye participated in the study. The findings were evaluated by thematic analysis. Results: The ages of the participants ranged from 25 to 49 years. Three main themes were obtained by the data analysis; "Reasons for using CST practices," "Complementary, supportive and traditional practices used" and "Opinions on the effect of CST practices." Conclusion: Women resorted to complementary and supportive practices for economic reasons, seeking hope, and environmental pressure. Various herbal cures, dietary practices, and religious methods such as praying and prayer amulets, hacamat (cupping), leeches, and various bodily applications were identified as methods commonly used by women. Women were using these methods with the recommendations of people who are not health professionals. It is important to determine the beneficial methods and increase women's awareness of harmful practices. Additionally, although women use many methods for infertility treatment, it should also be noted that infertility is not a female-only problem. Circadian disturbances are known to affect lipid metabolism. Most of the phospholipid metabolites have been shown to be under circaian control by metabolomics studies. Moreover, genes related to glycerolipid synthesis were reported to be circadianly regulated. Data from various studies revealed a relationship between glycerolipid metabolism and circadian misalignments. Some proteins responsible for transfer of phospholipids among plasma lipoproteins or membranes include phospholipid transfer proteins (PLTP), lecithin cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT), secretory phospholipase A2 (sPLA2), endothelial lipase (EL), exhibits circadian oscillation. However no data are available as to whether circadian disturbances can influence phospholipid trafficking among HDL, erythrocytes and serum. To this end,, four conditions associated with circadian disturbances including type 2 diabetes, prediabetes with metformin usage, psoriasis and night-shift work were investigated for phospholipid trafficking. Indices of circadian misalignments, plasma melatonin and cortisol levels, were determined by ELISA and chemiluminescence methods respectively. Serum levels of PLTP, LCAT, EL and sPLA2 levels were analyzed by ELISA. Phospholipid compositions were investigated by two-dimensional HPTLC and/or HPLC. Results by HPLC indicated that PE/PC ratios in erythrocyte lysates of diabetes and metformin groups were found to be significantly lower compared to that of controls which might be associated with the lower levels of LCAT, EL and PLTP levels measured. Altered plasma melatonin levels indicated circadian misalignments in these conditions. However, in psoriasis and night-shift groups, circadian indexes did not match with the PE/PC ratios in erythrocytes as it was in diabetes and metformin groups. This study determines the relationship between postpartum mothers' dyadic coping and adjustment strategies and their psychological well-being. The study design was descriptive and correlational; it was conducted in the pediatric outpatient clinic of a maternity hospital in Northern Türkiye. A total of 327 1–12 month postpartum mothers participated in the study. Data were collected using a personal information form, the Dyadic Coping Inventory (DCI), the Revised Dyadic Adjustment Scale (RDAS), and the Psychological Well-Being Scale. Mothers' behavior as an individual and as a couple in dyadic coping, their perception of their partner's behavior, and weak dyadic harmony between partners was significantly associated with risk factors affecting mothers' psychological well-being (p < 0.05). A weak relationship was found between the dimensions of mothers' psychological well-being and their perception of their own behavior in dyadic coping; a positive moderate relationship was found between mothers' perception of their partner's behavior in dyadic coping and behaviors exhibited as a couple in dyadic coping, and the former had a weak positive relationship with the dimensions of dyadic harmony and its subdimensions (p < 0.05). Self-perceived coping behavior, perception of the partner's behavior, and joint coping behavior in dyadic coping, and weak dyadic harmony between partners were significant risk factors affecting mothers' psychological well-being. Awareness of these factors by health professionals and individuals will increase the effectiveness of postpartum care and help couples adapt to the transition in the postpartum period, improve mother-father-infant interaction and strengthen dyadic harmony. Introduction: During pregnancy, sexual distress is common, but its prevalence and underlying factors require elucidation. This study was performed to investigate sexual distress in pregnant women. Methods: This research was designed as a descriptive and multi-center study. The study included 2365 pregnant women from 6 geographical regions of Turkey between April 1, 2022, and February 1, 2023. Data was collected using the "Pregnant Information Form" and "Female Sexual Distress Scale-Revised (FDS-R)." Descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test, analysis of variance, and the Pearson correlation test were used for data analysis. Results: Herein, 46.1% of pregnant women experienced sexual distress, and the mean FDS-R score of the study participants was 14.49. Participants who were dissatisfied with their sexual life before and during pregnancy (p < 0.001), those who did not have sexual intercourse during pregnancy (p < 0.001), those who experienced decreased sexual desire during pregnancy (p < 0.001), those who did not receive sexual education during pregnancy (p < 0.001), and those who experienced problems when engaging in sexual intercourse during pregnancy (p < 0.001) experienced more sexual distress. Sexual distress increased when the mean age and the number of pregnancies and children increased, whereas it decreased when the gestational week increased. Conclusions: Approximately half of the pregnant women included in the study experienced sexual distress. The findings highlight the importance of midwives and nurses encouraging pregnant women to discuss their sexuality. Policy implications: The findings of this study show that sexual distress during pregnancy is common and affected by some factors related to personal and sexual life during pregnancy. This result provides evidence of the need to develop culturally appropriate interventions and policies that include sexual partners in the context of improving pregnant women's sexual distress, sexual health, good family relationships and mental health. To compare the effects of nulliparous pregnant women listening to lullabies and self-selected music on reducing the anxiety and antenatal stress. This was a randomized controlled study. Lullaby group (LG) (n = 40) listened to the lullaby chosen by the researcher, mixed music group (MG) (n = 40) listened to self-selected music and control group (CG) (n = 40) received general care. Post-test anxiety and stress levels was lower in two intervention groups versus CG (p < 0.01). Post-test anxiety was lower in the MG versus LG (p < 0.01), however post-test stress levels were similar. Objective: Sexual dysfunction and sleep problems are common in women. Nevertheless, the relationship between sleep problems and sexual dysfunction during pregnancy has yet to be fully clarified. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between sleep problems and sexual dysfunction in pregnant women. Methods: The study had a cross-sectional design and the sample was determined by employing the G*Power program on the basis of the findings of a related study. Taking the correlation value between the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) and the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) into account, it was found that the minimum sample size was 219 pregnant women. Healthy pregnant women who were literate, did not have a diagnosed psychiatric disease, did not have a mental disability or communication problems, were in the gestation period, were not restricted by their doctors in terms of engaging in sexual activity, and who were willing to participate were included. The study included those pregnant women who consecutively attended the NST polyclinic in a maternity hospital in a province in the Black Sea region of Turkey between January 2022 and August 2022. The Sociodemographic Information Form, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the ISI, and the FSFI were used to collect data. Results: A total of 220 pregnant women took part. The women had a mean age of 27.4 ± 6.3. Of the pregnant women, all had poor sleep quality: 61% had insomnia problems; 30% had sexual dysfunction. When the relationships between the PSQI, ISI and FSFI were examined, there was a statistically significant positive correlation between the mean PSQI and ISI scores (p = 0.000). A statistically significant negative correlation was determined between the mean ISI and FSFI scores (p = 0.044). According to the multiple regression analysis, age did not significantly predict sexual function (β = -0.112; t = -1.639; p = 0.103); insomnia severity predicted sexual function negatively (β = -0.146; t = -2.136; p = 0.034). The explained variance was 2.6%. Conclusion: The findings suggest that sleep quality as measured by the PSQI does not correlate with female sexual dysfunction in pregnant women. Purpose: This study aims to examine the moderating role of formalization in the relationship between human resources (HR) practices and work engagement (WE) in aviation industry employees. The research revealed the moderator role of formalization, which is still one of the most critical components for aviation industry workers. Design/methodology/approach: In the study, the authors used the survey method. In this explanatory and cross-sectional study, the authors examined a data set collected from aviation industry employees (n = 226) in Turkey using the partial least squares (PLS) method and tried to moderate the formalization. The authors analyzed the moderator role of formalization in the relationship between HR practices and WE with SmartPLS 3.0 and HAYES Process Macro. Findings: The results of the study explain the effect of HR practices on WE in the context of social exchange theory through formalization. Findings show that formalization is an essential factor in HR practices' resulting in higher WE. Research limitations/implications: The study is cross-sectional. Research participants participated in the study voluntarily. This situation, in turn, may lead to a social desirability bias in participants' self-reported responses. To avoid this, the authors have prepared a standardized measurement tool. Again, since the authors do not request the names and institutions of the participants, confidentiality and anonymity are provided. Practical implications: Research findings offer implications for companies and employees in developing economies, especially in the aviation sector. It refers to the necessity for companies aiming for a sustainable strategic position in the competitive aviation sector to attach importance to HR practices that will enable them to see their employees as a competitive advantage. In addition, the results emphasize the need for aviation industry companies to adopt an approach that considers both practices that can increase WE and formalization procedures that can affect employee behavior. Originality/value: This research provides a comprehensive understanding to examine the interrelationships between HR, formalization and WE in the context of the mechanism of social change in the context of aviation industry workers. To the best of the authors' knowledge, no other researcher has holistically addressed these links in general, particularly in a developing country. Background: In recent years, with the development of laboratory methods, the frequency of nontuberculosis mycobacteria (NTM) infections has increased. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical significance of therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) growths in respiratory samples, and the secondary aim was to evaluate the treatment regimens and treatment outcomes of treatment for TDM disease. Methods: This study was a retrospective cohort study. Persons with NTM growth in respiratory samples admitted to the reference hospital between 2009 and 2020 were included in this study. Samples detected as NTM by the immunochromatographic rapid diagnostic test, those requested by the clinicians, species were determined by the hsp65PCRREA method. The subjects were classified into 3 groups: patients with NTM infection who received treatment (135, 12.7%), those followed up without treatment (690, 65.1%), and a last group of patients with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB) complex strains were isolated and received TB treatment (236, 22.2%). Initiating NTM treatment was decided in accordance with the American Thoracic Society recommendations. Results: The mean ± standard deviation age of patients was 53.8 ± 16.5 years, and 749 (70.6%) were male. In total, 278 (26.2%) out of 1061 cases had identified, and the most frequent species were MAC (81; Mycobacterium avium: 39, Mycobacterium intracellulare: 39, and MAC: 3), Mycobacterium abscessus (67), Mycobacterium kansasii (48), Mycobacterium fortuitum (23), Mycobacterium chelonae (12), Mycobacterium gordonae (11), and Mycobacterium szulgai (11). In the NTM treatment group, 116 (85.9%) of 135 patients had multiple culture positivity. Previous TB treatment history had 51 (37.8%) of 135 patients, respiratory comorbidities were evident in 37 (27.4%) of 135 patients. Thorax computed tomography imaging in 84 patients revealed nodule 38 (45.2%), consolidation 46 (54.8%), cavity 52 (61.9%), and bronchiectasis 27 (32.1%). Treatment results in the NTM treatment group were as follows: ongoing treatment 14 (10.4%), cure 64 (47.4%), default 33 (24.4%), exitus 19 (14.1%), recurrence 3 (2.2%), and refractory disease 2 (1.5%). Conclusion: This is a large case series evaluating the clinical significance of NTM growths and NTM treatment in Turkey. The clinical significance of NTM growth in respiratory samples is low. Treatment success rates of NTM patients who are treated are low. Treatment defaults and mortality rates are high. New drugs and new regimens are needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

INTRODUCTION During the pandemic, mental problems such as depression, anxiety, and stress may increase death anxiety. Thus, this study aims to examine women's levels of depression, anxiety, stress, and death anxiety, and to investigate the correlation between them, during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS This descriptive-correlational study was conducted on 665 women using an online survey in Turkey. The research sample was determined by applying convenience sampling and snowball methods according to the principle of accessibility-availability. RESULTS The mean Death Anxiety Scale score of the participants was 8.97±3.35, and the mean scores of depression, anxiety, stress and total Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS) were 5.23±3.93, 3.47±2.93, 5.99±3.74 and 14.69±9.51, respectively. A significant relationship was found between the women's death anxiety and their depression, anxiety, and stress levels. These findings indicate that the women had moderate death anxiety, mild depression, everyday anxiety, and stress levels. With the pandemic, death anxiety increased in women, especially those with chronic diseases and a history of medical or psychiatric illnesses. CONCLUSIONS The results of the study show that there was a significant positive correlation between the stress, depression, and anxiety levels of the women and their death anxiety. Infertility is a global problem that closely concerns people of reproductive age. Infertility has many negative effects on the lives of individuals, especially women who are more exposed to violence. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between the perceptions of domestic violence against women and the sexual functions of women who apply to a clinic for fertility treatment. This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 150 infertile women who applied to the clinic of a university hospital in northern Turkey between August 2018 and February 2019. The data were collected face-to-face using the descriptive information form, the Female Sexual Function Index and domestic-violence-against-women forms. The frequency, percentage, Pearson's product--moment correlation analysis, linear regression analysis, the Mann Whitney U test, and Cronbach's alpha methods were used in the analysis of the data. It was found that 54 per cent of the participants had a high school or higher education, 62 per cent of the participants did not work in an income-generating job, the participants were married for an average of 6.08 ± 3.99 years, and the mean age of the participants was 30.69 ± 6.13. The mean score of the domestic violence scale was 65.79 ± 11.16, and the mean score of the sexual function index was determined as 25.24 ± 5.47. Correlation values between domestic violence and sexual function index scores were found to be inversely significant (p < 0.05). The research indicates that infertile women who are exposed to violence experience more sexual dysfunction. It also indicates that women who are not satisfied with their sex life are more exposed to sexual violence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The evaluation of cell wellness is an important task for molecular biology research. This mainly comprises the assessment for morphology and viability of culturing cells. Annexin V-Propidium iodide counterstaining has been currently one of the common and easy methods to discriminate apoptotic and necrotic cell profiles. The method is operated by fluorescence-based detection of counterstain via laser beam-employed instruments including flow cytometer, fluorescence microscope and automated cell counter. The detection is primarily conducted based on the same principle; however the efficiency of instruments may vary. Here we evaluated the efficiency of those instruments for the clear-cut detection of cell death through various mammalian and microalgae cell lines. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study revealing comparative analyses of apoptotic and necrotic cells in mammalian and microalgae cells using Annexin V-PI counterstain detected by flow cytometer, fluorescence microscope and automated cell counter. Fluorescence microscope and cell counter instruments were also tested and compared for the traditional trypan blue-based cell viability detection performance. For these, cell death was induced by UV-irradiation and/or bee venom for mammalian (pancreatic cancer, metastatic breast cancer and mouse fibroblasts) and microalgae cells (Chlorella vulgaris), respectfully. Findings postulated that automated cell counter and fluorescence microscopy revealed similar patterns for the detection by both counterstain and trypan blue in mammalian cells. Interestingly, flow cytometry did provide an accurate and significant detection for only one mammalian cell line when UV-treatment was followed by routine Annexin V-Propidium iodide counterstaining. Unlike, only flow cytometry revealed a significant change in the detection of death of microalgae cells by Annexin V-Propidium iodide method, but both Annexin and conventional trypan blue methods were not applicable for the automated cell counter and microscopic detections for microalgae cells. The related outputs propose that the obtaining reliable quantitation strongly depends on cell type and instruments used. These suggest the necessity of optimization and validation endeavors before any cell death detection initiative. Introduction: The aim of the present study was to screen for bipolarity and to investigate the affective temperaments of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and the possible association between the clinical and demographic characteristics of MS patients and temperament profiles. Methods: A total of 65 patients with MS and 66 healthy volunteers completed the 32-item hypomania checklist (HCl-32), the Mood Disorder Questionnaire (MDQ), and the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego-Autoquestionnaire (TEMPS-A) tests. The HCl-32, MDQ, and TEMPS-A scores were compared between the patients and healthy volunteers. Results: MS patients had significantly higher scores for the depressive, cyclothymic, irritable, and anxious domains of the TEMPS-A scale than the control group, whereas relapsing remitting MS (RRMS) patients had higher MDQ and TEMPS-A hyperthymia scores than secondary progressive MS patients. MS patients who were being treated with interferon beta l-b therapy had significantly higher MDQ scores than those being treated with interferon beta l-a, glatiramer acetate, or who were without medication. Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) scores were positively correlated with TEMPS-A depressive and hyperthymic temperaments. Conclusion: Our results suggest that higher scores for affective temperament in MS patients indicate subclinical manifestations of mood disorders. Higher hyperthymia scores and manic symptoms detected in the RRMS group could shed light on the relationship between bipolarity and MS. Thus, the screening of bipolarity and affective temperament profiles in MS patients could help clinicians predict future mood episodes and decrease their impact on disease severity. AIM: The aim of the study is to investigate the relationship of handgrip strength and fatigability with cognitive functions in elderly individuals. The main hypothesis was determined as "There is a relationship between handgrip strength and fatigability with cognitive function in elderly individuals". METHODS: The research was approved by Ethics Committee of Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital (LBNDH) (06.01.2021-no. YTK.1.01). The sample consists of 89 individuals who applied to the LBNDH Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Service between the ages 65-85 years. They also agreed to sign the informed consent form. Handgrip strength and fatigability was measured by BIOPAC USA Student Lab's and the cognitive functions were evaluated with Standardized Mini Mental Test (SMMT). Relationships between variables were examined by Pearson correlation and standard multiple regression analysis. The differences in cognitive functions were tested by Mann-Whitney and Kruskal Wallis tests. RESULTS: As a result of the study, a moderate correlation was found between cognitive functions and grip strength (r= +0.31, p= 0.004). No statistically significant relationship was found between the fatigability index and cognitive functions. Cognitive functions were statistically significant according to gender (p=0.001), education (p=0.005) and employment status (p=0.000). Whole regression model was significant (F=12.236, p=0.001) and a unit change in the grip strength would cause an increase of 0.59 points in the SMMT score. In terms of education variable, the SMMT score of secondary, high school and university graduates was 2.28, 2.94 and 3.45 on average compare to primary school graduates. It can be said that 37% of the variance in the SMMT score is explained by the grip strength and education variable (R2=0.368). CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that the decline in cognitive functions due to aging should be considered together with motor functions such as muscle strength and many individual variables. AIM: Cadmium is a toxic element with a half-life of more than 10 years that accumulates in tissues, especially in kidney and liver. Nickel-cadmium mixture taken into body with batteries, accumulators, cigarettes, water and food. Aim of this study was to investigate the effect of L-carnitine against cadmium-induced changes in liver, kidney and small intestine tissues in prepubertal female rats. METHODS: 21-day-old female Wistar Albino rats were used in study. Control, CdCl2 (2mg/kg CdCl2 intraperitoneally), L-carnitine (LC) (300 mg/kg orally) and CdCl2+L-carnitine groups were formed. Sections were stained with H&E and Masson Trichrome. Histological scoring was performed in liver. Results were statistically evaluated with one-way analysis of variance using Graphpad Prism (Version9) program. RESULTS: Necrosis, increase in connective tissue around the portal area, bile duct proliferation, sinusoidal congestion, increase in inflammatory cells were observed in the liver of the Cd group. Congestion in intertubular capillaries in kidneys, dilatation in tubules and also irregularity in villi structures in small intestines were detected. Structural changes in organs were found to be alleviated in cadmium group treated with L-carnitine. In inflammatory cell scoring of the liver, Cd with control(p:0.009), Cd with LC(p:0.004), in fibrosis scoring, Cd with control(p:0.002), Cd+LC with control(p:0.03), Cd with LC (p:0.006), also in necrosis scoring between control and Cd(p:0.001), LC and Cd(p:0.001), and between control and Cd(p:0.001), LC and Cd(p:0.02) groups in bile duct proliferation statistically significant increase was observed. CONCLUSION: In conclusion medium-dose cadmium has toxic effects in liver, kidneys and small intestines of prepubertal female rats in subacute period, these effects are alleviated with Lcarnitine. It is necessary to examine the effects of cadmium with advanced laboratory techniques to support the results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AIM: Ischemia-reperfusion (IR) of the small intestine causes serious abdominal pathologies including tissue dysfunction and organ failure. We aimed to investigate the effects of IR injury on intestinal contractility and morphologic damage of rat ileum and duodenum and if there is any protective effects of L-Carnitine(L-C) application on IR damage. METHODS: Wistar rats were divided into four groups. Control group, IR group; superior mesenteric artery was ligated and 45 minutes of ischemia and 45 minutes of reperfusion were performed, IR+L-C group, L-C (200mg/kg iv) was administered 5 minutes before reperfusion, L-C group; only L-C administered. Segments were hung in the isolated organ bath and response to contraction with acetylcholine, relaxation with phenylephrine were recorded. Segments were stained with hematoxylin-eosin, IR injuries were scored under the light microscope. Villus lengths were recorded using the Fiji/Imagej program. Results were evaluated with the graphpad prism 8.3.1. One-Way ANOVA was used to compare differences between groups, Tukey's test was used for multiple comparisons. P=0.05 were considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Contraction responses; there was a significant difference in the ileum in the IR and IR+L-C groups when compared in control group (p<0.05). It was highest in the L-C group. In the duodenum, it was significantly higher in the IR+L-C and L-C groups compared to the IR group (p<0.05, p<0.005). Relaxation responses; ileum it was low in the all experimental groups (p<0.005, p<0.05). It was lower in the duodenum in IR group (p<0.05). Responses in IR+L-C and L-C were higher in the I/R groups. Intestinal morphology of the IR group was damaged. Statistically, the largest changes in morphology were significantly lower in villus height in the IR group (p<0.001, p<0.001). Villus height were significantly higher in the IR+L-C group compared to the control group (p<0.033, p<0.033) and the IR group (p<0.002, p<0.002). CONCLUSION: It showed that IR injury reduces intestinal contractility, L-C removes negative effects. Histological results showed that I/R caused tissue damage, L-C reduced mucosal damage. Background/aim: Alzheimer disease (AD) is characterized by the accumulation of senile plaques composed of amyloid β-peptide, which is derived from β-amyloid precursor protein through degradation by β-secretase and γ-secretase complexes. One of the major components of γ-secretase complex, anterior pharynx-defective-1 (APH-1), is responsible for the activity of the γ-secretase complex. In this study, we searched for not only the most known common genetic risk factor, APOE, but also the APH-1a gene polymorphism in AD patients in a Turkish population. Materials and methods: In this study, 49 AD patients and 45 healthy controls were included. The genetic polymorphisms and allele frequencies of APOE and APH-1a were investigated. Patients were evaluated for behavioral, cognitive, and functional domains by detailed neurocognitive tests, and comparison between the above-mentioned polymorphisms and disease severity was made. Results: Although there was an increased tendency of the APO ε4 allele in the AD group, no statistically significant difference was detected either in APOE or APH-1a polymorphisms, not suggesting a strong susceptibility to the development of AD. Conclusion: While searching for the pathogenesis of AD in order to develop novel diagnostic as well as therapeutic approaches, analysis of other genes with a possible role in AD is warranted. Background/aim: To determine whether there was a difference between serum and hair trace elements' concentrations in patients with Alzheimer disease (AD) and healthy participants. Materials and methods: Hair and serum copper, selenium, zinc, magnesium, manganese, and iron levels were measured by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry in patients with AD and healthy participants, and the obtained results were statistically compared. Results: The mean hair selenium and zinc levels of patients with AD were significantly lower than the levels found for control participants (P < 0.05). Patients with AD had significantly higher mean hair copper and manganese levels than the controls. There were no significant differences between AD patients and controls with respect to the hair iron and magnesium levels (P > 0.05). Hair and serum trace element (copper, selenium, zinc, magnesium, manganese, and iron) levels in patients with AD showed no significant difference according to mini mental test scores or sex (P > 0.05). Conclusion: Some trace element levels may change in patients with AD. Due to the more permanent status, the analysis of these element levels in hair might be superior to blood analysis. NUCB2/nesfatin-1 has been implicated in various physiological functions such as feeding, drinking and the sleep-wake cycle, but its effect on epileptic activity is not clear. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of NUCB2/nesfatin-1 on penicillin-induced epileptic activity and to answer the question of whether only NUCB2/nesfatin-1 cause epileptic activity in rats. Thirty-five rats were randomly assigned to the following seven groups: control, saline, penicillin, two different doses of NUCB2/nesfatin-1 (100 and 300 pmol), penicillin and two different doses of NUCB2/nesfatin-1 (100 and 300 pmol). EEGs were recorded before the injections and during the following 120 min. The EEG and motor findings of epileptic seizures were observed in NUCB2/nesfatin-1-injected groups. NUCB2/nesfatin-1 significantly increased the EEG power spectrum, spike frequency and amplitude values in penicillin-induced epileptic rats. These findings indicate that NUCB2/nesfatin-1 both causes epileptic activity and increases penicillin-induced epileptic activity in rats. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Noise, one of the main components of modern society, has become an important environmental problem. Noise is not only an irritating sound, but also a stress factor leading to serious health problems. In this study, we have investigated possible effects of rosuvastatin, a 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase inhibitor, thought to have an antioxidant effect, on noise-induced oxidative stress in the serum of rat models. Thirty-two male Wistar albino rats were used. In order to ease their adaptation, 2 weeks before the experiment, the rats were divided into four groups (with eight rats per each group): Noise exposure plus rosuvastatin usage, only noise exposure, only rosuvastatin usage and control. After the data had been collected, oxidant (Malondialdehyde, nitric oxide [NO], protein carbonyl [PC]) and antioxidant (superoxide dismutase [SOD], glutathione peroxidase [GSH-PX], catalase [CAT]) parameters were analyzed in the serum. Results indicated that SOD values were found to be significantly lower, while PC values in serum were remarkably higher in the group that was exposed to only noise. GSH-Px values in serum dramatically increased in the group on which only rosuvastatin was used. During noise exposure, the use of rosuvastatin caused significantly increased CAT values, whereas it resulted in reduced PC and NO values in serum. In conclusion, our data show that noise exposure leads to oxidative stress in rat serum; however, rosuvastatin therapy decreases the oxidative stress caused by noise exposure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background/aim: Vascular risk factors play an important role in the progression of Alzheimer disease (AD). Mean platelet volume (MPV) is a determinant of platelet functionality and increased MPV is associated with an increased risk of vascular inflammation. Here we aimed to examine whether MPV could be used as a marker of vascular damage in AD and to discuss the relation between MPV and other vascular risk factors. Materials and methods: A total of 109 outpatients with AD and 81 healthy controls were included in this study. Diagnosis of AD was made according to defined criteria. The Turkish version of the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) was used for cognitive assessment. According to the test results, patients were divided into 2 subgroups, mild (MMSE ≥ 18) and moderate (MMSE < 18), and their MPV levels were compared. Results: MPV levels were higher in the AD group. There was no statistically significant difference between the moderate group and the mild group according to MPV values. Conclusion: Increased MPV in patients with AD may point to platelet dysfunction. MPV is an indicator of increased in vivo platelet activation. Hence, platelets could be the link between vascular risk factors and AD. The assessment of MPV in patients with AD may help identify the patients that could benefit from additional antiplatelet therapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Varenicline is a new drug for smoking cessation, and its effect on epilepsy is not clear. The aim of this study was to investigate whether different doses of varenicline cause epileptic activity. Forty rats were randomly assigned to the following eight groups: control, saline, and 0.025, 0.04, 0.1, 0.5, 1, and 2 mg kg varenicline (single dose, i.p.). EEGs were recorded before the varenicline injection and during the following 240 min. While epileptic discharges were observed on the EEGs of the rats in all of the varenicline-treated groups, motor findings of epileptic seizure were not observed in some rats in these groups except the 1 and 2 mg kg groups. Carbonic anhydrase (CA) is an enzyme which plays a role in various homeostatic mechanisms, such as acid-base balance and electrolyte secretion in a various tissues. This study was aimed at determining and comparing possible alterations in activity of this enzyme caused by the use of old (Carbamazepine, Phenytoin Sodium, Sodium Valproate) and new (Levetiracetam, Pregabalin, Gabapentin, Oxcarbazepine) anti-epileptic drugs. Blood samples were collected from the volunteers. The blood samples were centrifuged to separate plasma and erythrocyte package. Hemolysate was prepared from the red cells. CA I and II were purified from human erythrocytes by a simple one step procedure using Sepharose 4B-L-tyrosine-sulfonamide affinity column. CA I and II isozymes were treated with some anti-epileptic drugs, then the inhibition or activation of enzyme determined. The results of this study show that Levetiracetam is the most effective inhibitor for human erythrocytes carbonic anhydrase compared with the other anti-epileptic drugs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
