Law enforcement officers are the primary individuals called and who respond to situations of heightened concern. They make split-second observations and decisions based on how best to react to given safety situations and those involved. Characteristics of autism spectrum disorders (ASD), if not properly understood and reacted to, may quickly escalate a law enforcement officer call in a negative way, making autism training for law enforcement officers imperative. To ascertain what is known about autism training for law enforcement officers, a scoping review was conducted. Five studies met final inclusion criteria. The trainees, context and development of the training, evaluation procedures, and training outcomes are synthesized to provide guidance for future training implementation teams. This paper draws on the geographies of emotion and masculinities literature to explore rural men's experiences of the 2016 Kaikōura/Waiau earthquake in Aotearoa, New Zealand. Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with 19 men affected by the earthquake. Geographies of emotion enable reflection on the social context and individual circumstances of those impacted by natural hazard events, thereby contributing to understanding the way local constructions of gender influence people's experiences of disasters. The paper highlights how emotions are present regardless of how antipodean notions of hegemonic masculinity, reflecting stoicism and reserve, shape disaster responses. The research identified that two years on from the earthquake, men were still emotional when talking about the earthquake, yet attempted to silence their emotional distress. Through an analysis of emotion, men's hidden vulnerabilities and capacities, which are linked to sets of understandings about masculinities in place, are captured. Background/aims: Healthcare professionals play an important role in vocational rehabilitation for people receiving welfare support. The research questions for this study were: how do qualified healthcare professionals operate in UK welfare-to-work settings? What factors influence healthcare professionals' practice within a UK welfare-to-work setting? Methods: A qualitative methodology was adopted. Four semi-structured interviews were conducted and additional documents (the awarded Work and Health Programme bids and job descriptions) about the healthcare professionals' roles were reviewed. Inductive thematic analysis was undertaken. Results: Five themes were generated from the interview data: supporting frontline staff to understand clients' health needs; moving clients with complex needs closer to work; getting it right for the client by individualising support; gaining consent and maintaining confidentiality; and seeking and organising clinical supervision. These themes were corroborated with the document data. Conclusions: Healthcare professionals have a key role within welfare-to-work provision. Further research is needed to determine if the proposed healthcare professional roles have come to fruition, to identify their prevalence, and to explore their effectiveness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background/Aims: Loneliness and social isolation are thought to have a negative impact on health and wellbeing. There is little literature that provides an explicit focus on loneliness and social isolation in occupational therapy practice. The aim of this study was to explore themes related to loneliness and social isolation in occupational therapy-related literature and consider the implications for practice. Methods: CINAHL, Medline, Pub Med, AMed, PsycINFO, TRIP Database, and Science direct and Web of science databases were used to identify articles pertaining to occupational therapy, loneliness and social isolation. Results: A total of 20 articles were included and three themes were identified: loneliness and social isolation are detrimental to health and wellbeing; factors associated with increased loneliness and social isolation; factors that protect against the impact of loneliness and social isolation. Conclusions: Loneliness and social isolation have a significant impact on the health and wellbeing of the people occupational therapists work with. Occupational therapy practice should include the recognition and assessment of loneliness and social isolation, and interventions to help reduce any impacts on health and wellbeing. The city of Flint, Michigan switched its water source in April, 2014, and, to reduce costs, anti-corrosion agents were omitted from water treatment. Consequently, lead leached into pipes, contaminating the water supply and exposing Flint's children to lead well beyond safety standards. The event became known as the Water Crisis, and now dominates Flint's public image. This paper portrays a project that arose out of one community response to the situation in Flint, the provision of quality child-care to families living in the affected areas by the University of Michigan-Flint. As part of this effort, a group of Early Childhood faculty and center head teachers participated in a Teaching Circle (Hutchings in Making teaching community property, American Association of Higher Education, Washington, DC, 1996), in which we read and studied the book, Reggio tutta: A guide to the city by the children (Reggio Children, Reggio Emilia, 2000) and teachers were inspired to share questions with their classes. Our analysis of the Teaching Circle and those projects uses children's perspectives and interpretations of campus and the city to focus on the beauty and resourcefulness of the Flint community. Face-to-face time with students in the early childhood college setting is at a premium and often flies by before we begin to scratch the surface of active learning. Building a community of learners is one of our main goals as instructors; therefore, we strive to set up active learning environments optimal for all students. This reflection on practice highlights the text connections learning strategy, describes how four early childhood education instructors use it, and analyzes its theoretical underpinnings to investigate how it helps students learn to contribute to the learning of all. Many older people in Britain spend Christmas day alone. The Christmas period may be especially difficult for older people who are socially isolated, living with dementia or who have physical impairments, and may feel particularly marginalised at this time of year. This paper draws on evaluative research findings from a community Christmas event held in December 2014 at the University of Salford for older people and their carers who would be on their own on Christmas day. A multi-method approach was employed, seven guests took part in semi-structured interviews to explore their experiences and perceptions of the event, seven staff and student volunteers participated in a group interview to explore and discuss their participation in the event. Data collection took place during April and May 2015. Interview transcripts were subjected to thematic analysis. Three overarching themes were identified from the interviews: 'reasons for participants attending the event', 'a different Christmas day: the impact on guests and volunteers', and 'learning, planning and moving forwards'. The findings illustrate that a range of people participated in the Christmas day event for a variety of reasons. The event itself had a positive impact, including the shared experience of social belonging, for all involved. There are tangible longer term benefits as a result of the event, such as ongoing contact between participants and the development of supportive networks in the local community. Since September 2010, a series of earthquakes have caused widespread social, financial and environmental devastation in Christchurch, New Zealand. Anecdotal evidence suggests that local Māori responded effectively to facilitate community recovery and resilience. Cultural technologies that are protective in times of adversity have previously been noted in Māori communities, but rarely documented. An ongoing research project conducted in partnership with the local Christchurch Iwi (tribe) Ngāi Tahu, has been identifying, and documenting the ways Māori cultural factors have facilitated disaster risk reduction and management in response to the earthquakes. A qualitative research methodology (Te Whakamāramatanga), based on Ngāi Tahu values, and practices has shaped the community-based participatory research design. Māori research participants were recruited purposively and through self-selection. At the time of writing, the researchers had conducted semi-structured interviews with 43 Māori research participants. Culturally relevant (dialogical and narrative) interviewing approaches have been used to gather research information and facilitate trusting relationships between researchers and local Māori communities. Community engagement has been fostered, as well as a capture of Māori understandings and practices associated with risk reduction and mitigation, disaster preparedness, response and recovery. Data analysis draws on social and risk theories as well as indigenous epistemological concepts. Initial data analysis suggests that within the New Zealand context, Civil Defence and Emergency Management policies and disaster risk reduction practices may be enhanced by the respectful integration of pertinent Māori knowledge and strategies. Ngāi Tahu has a statutory governance role in the Christchurch rebuild as stipulated in the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority Act (2011) and relational links with the New Zealand government and local authorities. Accordingly, information arising from data analysis, tribal knowledge, and Māori emergency management practices documented during this project is shaping development of contextualised risk reduction and disaster management strategies at urban and regional levels. Upon project conclusion, research results and recommendations will be disseminated to Iwi (tribes) and key stakeholders, to facilitate Māori disaster management capability, and disaster preparedness, risk reduction, and recovery planning throughout New Zealand. The researchers anticipate that lessons learned from this research may have relevance for other small island states and/or countries with indigenous populations that have similar value systems and bodies of traditional knowledge. New Zealand health legislation requires midwives to affirm Māori as tangata whenua (people of the land) and actively honour the principles of partnership, protection and participation as an affirmation of the Treaty of Waitangi. Despite the introduction of some Māori values (Ngā Turanga Kaupapa) into performance criteria for professional competencies and standards of practice, there is no representation of any Māori world view within the partnership model; the foundation of midwifery practice. Non-acknowledgement of tikanga (cultural traditions) and mātauranga Māori (indigenous knowledge) within the underlying philosophies of practice potentially violates current health legislation and inherently contradicts professional competencies, ethics and practice standards. The mono-cultural model of partnership is arguably contextually inadequate and potentially detrimental to whānau ora (family health and wellbeing). An argument is presented that, subject to consultation, a bicultural model of partnership could provide a legal, ethical and contextually relevant framework for midwifery care provision in Aotearoa New Zealand. Kisspeptin is a product of the Kiss1 gene and is expressed in the forebrain. Neurons that express Kiss1 play a crucial role in the regulation of pituitary luteinizing hormone secretion and reproduction. These neurons are the direct targets for the action of estradiol-17β(E2 ), which acts via the estrogen receptor αisoform (ERα) to regulate Kiss1 expression. In the arcuate nucleus (Arc), where the dynorphin gene (Dyn) is expressed in Kiss1 neurons, E2 inhibits the expression of Kiss1 mRNA. However, E2 induces the expression of Kiss1 in the anteroventral periventricular nucleus (AVPV). The mechanism for differential regulation of Kiss1 in the Arc andAVPVby E2 is unknown. ERαsignals through multiple pathways, which can be categorized as either classical, involving the estrogen response element (ERE), or nonclassical, involving ERE-independent mechanisms. To elucidate the molecular basis for the action of E2 on Kiss1 and Dyn expression, we studied the effects of E2 on Kiss1 and DynmRNAsin the brains of mice bearing targeted alterations in the ERαsignaling pathways.We found that stimulation of Kiss1 expression by E2 in the AVPV and inhibition of Dyn in the Arc required an ERE-dependent pathway, whereas the inhibition of Kiss1 expression by E2 in the Arc involved ERE-independent mechanisms. Thus, distinct ERαsignaling pathways can differentially regulate the expression of identical genes across different brain regions, and E2 can act within the same neuron through divergent ERαsignaling pathways to regulate different neurotransmitter genes. Nonclassical estrogen receptor a (ERα) signaling can mediate E[sub2] negative feedback actions in the reproductive axis; however. downstream pathways conveying these effects remain unclear. These studies tested the hypothesis that p21-activated kinase 1 (PAK1), a serine/threonine kinase rapidly activated by E[sub2] in nonneural cells, functions as a downstream node for E[sub2] signaling pathways in cells of the preoptic area, and it may thereby mediate E[sub2] negative feedback effects. Treatment of ovariectomized (OVX) rats with estradiol benzoate (EB) caused rapid and transient induction of phosphorylated PAK1 immunoreactivity in the medial preoptic nucleus (MPN) but not the arcuate nucleus. To determine whether rapid induction of PAK phosphorylation by E[sub2] is mediated by nonclassical [estrogen response element (ERE)-independent] ERα signaling, we used female ERα null (ERα[sup-/-]) mice possessing an ER knock-in mutation (E207A/G208A; AA). in which the mutant ERa is incapable of binding DNA and can signal only through membrane-initiated or EKE-independent genotropic pathways (ERα[sup-/AA] mice). After 1-h EB treatment, the number of pPAK1-immunoreactive cells in the MPN was increased in both wild-type (ERα[sup+/+]) and ERα[sup-/AA] mice but was unchanged in ERα[sup-/-] mice. Serum luteinizing hormone (LH) was likewise suppressed within 1 h after EB treatment in ERα[sup+/+] and ERα[sup-/AA] but not ERα[sup-/-] mice. In OVX rats. 5-mm intracerebroventricular infusion of a PAK inhibitor peptide but not control peptide blocked rapid EB suppression of LH secretion. Taken together, our findings implicate PAK1 activation subsequent to nondassical ERa signaling as an important component of the negative feedback actions of E[sub2] in the brain.
