Periodontal disease is a widespread global health concern that necessitates an accurate diagnosis for effective treatment. Traditional diagnostic methods based on panoramic radiographs are often limited by subjective evaluation and low-resolution imaging, leading to suboptimal precision. This study presents an approach that integrates Super-Resolution Generative Adversarial Networks (SRGANs) with deep learning-based segmentation models to enhance the segmentation of periodontal bone loss (PBL) areas on panoramic radiographs. By transforming low-resolution images into high-resolution versions, the proposed method reveals critical anatomical details that are essential for precise diagnostics. The effectiveness of this approach was validated using datasets from the Chungbuk National University Hospital and the Kaggle data portal, demonstrating significant improvements in both image resolution and segmentation accuracy. The SRGAN model, evaluated using the Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Structural Similarity Index Measure (SSIM) metrics, achieved a PSNR of 30.10 dB and an SSIM of 0.878, indicating high fidelity in image reconstruction. When applied to semantic segmentation using a U-Net architecture, the enhanced images resulted in a dice similarity coefficient (DSC) of 0.91 and an intersection over union (IoU) of 84.9%, compared with 0.72 DSC and 65.4% IoU for native low-resolution images. These results underscore the potential of SRGAN-enhanced imaging to improve PBL area segmentation and suggest broader applications in medical imaging, where enhanced image clarity is crucial for diagnostic accuracy. This study also highlights the importance of further research to expand the dataset diversity and incorporate clinical validation to fully realize the benefits of super-resolution techniques in medical diagnostics. Rice is one of the plants proven to possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative, and whitening properties, making it one of the most beneficial plants in this regard. This study aimed to introduce a novel natural cosmetic and pharmaceutical product based on rice callus as a source of active ingredients that can inhibit skin melanoma cell (B16F10) proliferation and brighten the skin. The 2,4-D hormone at concentrations of 1 µg/mL and 1.5 µg/mL was used to induce rice callus formation. Rice callus extracts were then prepared using aqueous and ethanolic solvents, with a concentration of 1 mg/mL used for characterization tests. To determine the optimal hormone concentration, the phenols/flavonoids, antioxidant activity, proteins, and carbohydrates in the extracts were measured. The optimal concentration of the hormone was found to be 1 µg/mL. Finally, the anti-melanocyte and skin-whitening activity of the extracts was assessed through measurements of their cytotoxicity and inhibition of melanin synthesis-related enzymes. Cellular cytotoxicity measurements revealed that the ethanolic extract induced more cytotoxicity than the aqueous extract, with IC50 values of 566.3 µg/mL for the ethanolic extract and 1327 µg/mL for the aqueous extract. Skin-whitening-related tests demonstrated that the extracts were 1.7 times more effective than arbutin in inhibiting factors that cause hyperpigmentation. The aqueous extract achieved 85% inhibition of melanin biosynthesis at a concentration of 3200 µg/mL, compared to 68% for the ethanolic extract and 50% for arbutin. Based on these findings, rice callus extract can be introduced as a new, effective substance for skin-lightening and anti-melanocyte products in cosmeceutical and pharmaceutical formulations. The present study investigated potential bioactive natural products from the EtOH extract of Salix chaenomeloides twigs using column chromatography, leading to the isolation of six compounds (1–6), which were characterized as two proanthocyanidins, procyanidin B2 (1) and procyanidin B1 (2), and four phenolic compounds, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid β-D-glucosyl ester (3), di-O-methylcrenatin (4), p-coumaric acid glucoside (5), and syringin (6) by the comparison of their NMR spectra with the reported data and high-resolution (HR)-electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy (ESI-MS) analysis. We investigated the potential of six compounds (1–6) to inhibit adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes, which showed that the compounds (1–6) significantly reduced lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes without affecting cell proliferation. Notably, compound 1 demonstrated a remarkable 60% and 90% reduction in lipid levels with 50 and 100 µM treatments, respectively. Oil Red O staining results indicated that compound 1 significantly inhibits the formation of lipid droplets, comparable to the effect of T863, an inhibitor of triglyceride used as a positive control, in adipocytes. Compound 1 had no effect on the regulators PPARγ, C/EBPα, and SREBF1 of adipocyte differentiation in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes, but compound 1 activated the fatty acid oxidation regulator, PPARα, compared to the lipogenic-induced control. It also suppressed fatty acid synthesis by downregulating the expression of fatty acid synthase (FAS). Finally, compound 1 induced the mRNA and protein levels of CPT1A, an initial marker of mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation in 3T3-L1. This finding substantiates the anti-lipogenic and lipolytic effects of procyanidin B2 (1) in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes, emphasizing its pivotal role in modulating obesity-related markers. Salix chaenomeloides Kimura, commonly known as pussy willow, is a deciduous shrub and tree belonging to the Salicaceae family. The genus Salix spp. has been known as a healing herb for the treatment of fever, inflammation, and pain relief. The current study aimed to investigate the potential bioactive natural products from S. chaenomeloides leaves and evaluate their antibacterial activity against Helicobacter pylori. A phytochemical investigation of the ethanol (EtOH) extract of S. chaenomeloides leaves led to the isolation of 13 phenolic compounds (1–13) from the ethyl acetate (EtOAc) fraction, which showed antibacterial activity against H. pylori strain 51. The chemical structure of a new phenolic glycoside, chaenomelin (1), was established by a detailed analysis of 1D and 2D (1H-1H correlation spectroscopy (COSY), heteronuclear single-quantum coherence (HSQC), and heteronuclear multiple-bond correlation (HMBC)) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy (HR-ESIMS), and chemical reactions. The other known compounds were identified as 5-O-trans-p-coumaroyl quinic acid methyl ester (2), tremulacin (3), citrusin C (4), benzyl 3-O-β-d-glucopyranosyl-7-hydroxybenzoate (5), tremuloidin (6), 1-[O-β-d-glucopyranosyl(1→2)-β-d-glucopyranosyl]oxy-2-phenol (7), arbutin cinnamate (8), tremulacinol (9), catechol (10), 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (11), kaempferol 3-rutinoside (12), and narcissin (13), based on the comparison of their NMR spectra with the reported data and liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) analysis. The isolated compounds were evaluated for antibacterial activity against H. pylori strain 51. Among the isolates, 1-[O-β-d-glucopyranosyl(1→2)-β-d-glucopyranosyl]oxy-2-phenol (7) and arbutin cinnamate (8) exhibited antibacterial activity against H. pylori strain 51, with inhibitions of 31.4% and 33.9%, respectively, at a final concentration of 100 μM. These results were comparable to that of quercetin (38.4% inhibition), which served as a positive control. Serum creatinine is used to measure the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR); however, it is influenced by muscle mass and may therefore overestimate renal function in patients with sarcopenia. We examined calf circumference (CC) as a convenient muscle mass evaluation tool that can potentially indicate the need to test for cystatin C instead of creatinine in elderly inpatients. We retrospectively reviewed the electronic health record of 271 inpatients aged 65 or over. CC was determined by measuring the thickest part of the nondominant calf. eGFRcys and eGFRcr were calculated using cystatin C and creatinine levels, respectively. We evaluated optimum CC cutoff values using the eGFRcys/eGFRcr ratio for detecting hidden renal impairment (HRI, defined as eGFRcr ≥ 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 but eGFRcys < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2). CC showed a significant positive correlation with the eGFRcys/eGFRcr ratio in both sexes. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve were 0.725 and 0.681 for males and females, respectively. CC cutoffs with a sensitivity or specificity of 90% or 95% might be used to detect HRI in males. To evaluate the phylogenetic relationships between Hylotelephium and Orostachys, and to provide important information for further studies, we analyzed the complete chloroplast genomes of six Hylotelephium species and compared the sequences to those of published chloroplast genomes of congeneric species and species of the closely related genus , Orostachys. The total chloroplast genome length of nineteen species, including the six Hylotelephium species analyzed in this study and the thirteen Hylotelephium and Orostachys species analyzed in previous studies, ranged from 150,369 bp (O. minuta) to 151,739 bp (H. spectabile). Their overall GC contents were almost identical (37.7–37.8%). The chloroplast genomes of the nineteen species contained 113 unique genes comprising 79 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 30 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), and four ribosomal RNA genes (rRNAs). Among the annotated genes, fourteen genes contained one intron, and two genes contained two introns. The chloroplast genomes of the nineteen Hylotelephium and Orostachys species had identical structures. Additionally, the large single copy (LSC), inverted repeat (IR), and small single copy (SSC) junction regions were conserved in the Hylotelephium and Orostachys species. The nucleotide diversity between the Hylotelephium chloroplast genomes was extremely low in all regions, and only one region showed a high Pi value (>0.03). In all nineteen chloroplast genomes, six regions had a high Pi value (>0.03). The phylogenetic analysis showed that the genus delimitation could not be clearly observed even in this study because Hylotelephium formed a paraphyly with subsect. Orostachys of the genus Orostachys. Additionally, the data supported the taxonomic position of Sedum taqeutii, which was treated as a synonym for H. viridescens in previous studies, as an independent taxon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This prospective, 12-center study investigated the etiology and clinical characteristics of acute viral hepatitis (AVH) during 2020–2021 in South Korea, and the performance of different diagnostic methods for hepatitis E virus (HEV). We enrolled 428 patients with acute hepatitis, of whom 160 (37.4%) were diagnosed with AVH according to predefined serologic criteria. The clinical data and risk factors for AVH were analyzed. For hepatitis E patients, anti-HEV IgM and IgG were tested with two commercial ELISA kits (Abia and Wantai) with HEV-RNA real-time RT-PCR. HAV, HEV, HBV, HCV, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), cytomegalovirus, and herpes simplex virus accounted for AVH in 78.8% (n = 126), 7.5% (n = 12), 3.1% (n = 5), 1.9% (n = 3), 6.9% (n = 11), 1.2% (n = 2), and 0.6% (n = 1) of 160 patients (median age, 43 years; men, 52.5%; median ALT, 2144 IU/L), respectively. Hospitalization, hemodialysis, and intensive care unit admission were required in 137 (86.7%), 5 (3.2%), and 1 (0.6%) patient, respectively. Two patients developed acute liver failure (1.3%), albeit without mortality or liver transplantation. Ingestion of uncooked clams/oysters and wild boars' blood/bile was reported in 40.5% and 16.7% of patients with HAV and HEV, respectively. The concordance rate between the anti-HEV-IgM results of both ELISA kits was 50%. HEV RNA was detected in only 17% of patients with HEV. To compare pregnancy rates and complications in women with and without a history of optic neuritis (ON). A nationwide, population-based, retrospective study using data from the Korean National Health Claims from January 2011, to December 2017 was done. ON cohort (ON group) consisting of women aged 18 to 50 with a history of ON and 1:3 age-matched controls (control group) were compared for pregnancy and delivery rates using logistic regression after adjusting for possible confounders. Pregnancy-ON cohort (pregnancy-ON group), women aged 18 to 55 with a history of ON and pregnancy, and 1:3 age at pregnancy matched controls (pregnancy-control group) were analyzed for pregnancy complications using logistic regression after adjusting for covariates. ON group (n = 2516) showed decreased odds ratio (OR) for pregnancy [Adjusted OR2: 0.716, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.626–0.820] and delivery (adjusted OR2: 0.647, 95% CI: 0.554–0.756) compared to controls (n = 7548). Pregnancy-ON group (n = 550) showed increased risk of delayed fetal growth (adjusted OR2: 9.867, 95% CI: 1.224–79.564), pre-eclampsia (adjusted OR2: 8.327, 95% CI: 2.911–23.819), preterm delivery (adjusted OR2: 3.914, 95% CI: 2.667–5.742), pregnancy and postpartum infection (adjusted OR1: 1.671, 95% CI: 1.296–2.154), diabetes in pregnancy (adjusted OR2: 1.365, 95% CI: 1.062–1.754) compared to pregnancy-control group (n = 1650). Our population-based cohort study suggests that history of ON is associated with decreased pregnancy and delivery rates. It may be a risk factor for various pregnancy complications. Background: There are no longitudinal studies on the epidemiology of primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) in Korea. This study aimed to elucidate the temporal trends in the epidemiology and outcomes of PBC in South Korea between 2009 and 2019. Methods: The epidemiology and outcomes of PBC were estimated using data from the Korean National Health Service database. Temporal trends in the PBC incidence and prevalence were analyzed using join-point regression. Transplant-free survival was analyzed according to age, sex, and ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) treatment using Kaplan–Meier and Cox regression analyses. Results: The age and sex-standardized incidence between 2010 and 2019 (total patients, 4230) was 1.03 per 100,000 per year on average and increased from 0.71 to 1.14 per 100,000 with an annual percent change (APC) of 5.5. The age and sex-standardized prevalence between 2009 and 2019 was 8.21 per 100,000 on average and increased from 4.30 to 12.32 per 100,000 with an APC of 10.9. The increasing trend in prevalence was prominent in males and elderly individuals. Among patients with PBC, 98.2% received UDCA with 77.3% adherence. The 5-year transplant-free overall survival rate was 87.8%. Male sex and low adherence to UDCA were associated with all-cause death or transplantation (hazard ratios of 1.59 and 1.89, respectively), and liver-related death or transplantation (hazard ratios of 1.43 and 1.87, respectively). Conclusions: The incidence and prevalence of PBC in Korea increased significantly between 2009 and 2019. Male sex and low adherence to UDCA were poor prognostic factors for PBC. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of government support policies and research and development (R&D) activities on product innovation under market uncertainty. Design/methodology/approach: This study applies logistic regression analysis to a sample of 4,000 South Korean manufacturing firms in order to investigate the impact of government policies and R&D activities of the firm on firm innovation performance, with particular interest in the moderating role of the firm's perceived market uncertainty (PMU). Findings: Policies supporting industry/university/institute/local collaboration are found to have greater benefit under high PMU. Surprisingly, support for a consortium among different-sized firms has a negative effect on product innovation, although this negative effect disappears under high PMU. Both support for the protection of intellectual property (IP) and support for the resolution of manpower shortages have strong positive effects on the propensity to innovate products, but in both cases the moderating effects of uncertainty are negative. Finally, all types of R&D activities have positive effects on the propensity to innovate, more so for new product innovation than for improved product innovation. Originality/value: To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first study to examine analytically the moderating effect of PMU in the effectiveness of government policies promoting innovation in the manufacturing sector. The study is potentially useful both for policymakers in deciding which policies to implement under prevailing market conditions; and for entrepreneurs choosing between different forms of government support, particularly given the abnormal levels of market uncertainty prevailing in the Covid-19 era. Previous studies have reported that anthocyanin (ACN)-rich materials have beneficial effects on ulcerative colitis (UC). Blackcurrant (BC) has been known as one of the foods rich in ACN, while studies demonstrating its effect on UC are rare. This study attempted to investigate the protective effects of whole BC in mice with colitis using dextran sulfate sodium (DSS). Mice were orally given whole BC powder at a dose of 150 mg daily for four weeks, and colitis was induced by drinking 3% DSS for six days. Whole BC relieved symptoms of colitis and pathological changes in the colon. The overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β, TNF-α, and IL-6 in serum and colon tissues was also reduced by whole BC. In addition, whole BC significantly lowered the levels of mRNA and protein of downstream targets in the NF-κB signaling pathway. Furthermore, BC administration increased the expression of genes related to barrier function: ZO-1, occludin, and mucin. Moreover, the whole BC modulated the relative abundance of gut microbiota altered with DSS. Therefore, the whole BC has demonstrated the potential to prevent colitis through attenuation of the inflammatory response and regulation of the gut microbial composition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Zabelia tyaihyonii (Nakai) Hisauti and H. Hara is a perennial shrub endemic to Republic of Korea that grows naturally in only a very limited region of the dolomite areas of Gangwon-do and Chungcheongbuk-do Provinces in the Republic of Korea. Given its geographical characteristics, it is more vulnerable than more widely distributed species. Despite the need for comprehensive information to support conservation, population genetic information for this species is very scarce. In this study, we analyzed the genetic diversity and population structure of 94 individuals from six populations of Z. tyaihyonii using a genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) approach to provide important information for proper conservation and management. Our results, based on 3088 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), showed a mean expected heterozygosity (He) of 0.233, no sign of within-population inbreeding (GIS that was close to or even below zero in all populations), and a high level of genetic differentiation (FST = 0.170). Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) indicated that the principal molecular variance existed within populations (84.5%) rather than among populations (17.0%). We suggested that six management units were proposed for conservation considering Bayesian structure analysis and phylogenetic analysis, and given the various current situations faced by Z. tyaihyonii, it is believed that not only the in situ conservation but also the ex situ conservation should be considered. Salix species, including willow trees, are distributed in the temperate regions of Asian countries, including South Korea. Willow trees are used to treat pain and inflammatory diseases. Due to the medicinal properties of willow trees, pharmacological studies of other Salix spp. have gained attention; however, only a few studies have investigated the phytochemicals of these species. As part of our ongoing natural product research to identify bioactive phytochemicals and elucidate their chemical structures from natural resources, we investigated the marker compounds from indigenous Korean Salix species, namely, Salix triandra, S. chaenomeloides, S. gracilistyla, S. koriyanagi, S. koreensis, S. pseudolasiogyne, S. caprea, and S. rorida. The ethanolic extract of each Salix sp. was investigated using high-performance liquid chromatography combined with thin-layer chromatography and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry-based analysis, and marker compounds of each Salix sp. were isolated. The chemical structures of the marker compounds (1–8), 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propyl β-D-glucopyranoside (1), 2-O-acetylsalicin (2), 1-O-p-coumaroyl glucoside (3), picein (4), isograndidentatin B (5), 2′-O-acetylsalicortin (6), dihydromyricetin (7), and salicin (8) were elucidated via nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and high-resolution liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry using ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography coupled with a G6545B Q-TOF MS system with a dual electrospray ionization source. The identified marker compounds 1–8 were examined for their antimicrobial effects against plant pathogenic fungi and bacteria. Dihydromyricetin (7) exhibited antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, inducing 32.4% inhibition at a final concentration of 125 μg/mL with an MIC50 value of 250 μg/mL. Overall, this study isolated the marker compounds of S. triandra, S. chaenomeloides, S. gracilistyla, S. koriyanagi, S. koreensis, S. pseudolasiogyne, S. caprea, and S. rorida and identified the anti-Staphylococcus aureus bacterial compound dihydromyricetin. We analyzed the complete chloroplast genomes of eight Orostachys species and compared the sequences to those of published chloroplast genomes of the congeneric and closely related genera, Meterostachys and Hylotelephium. The total chloroplast genome length of thirteen species, including the eight species analyzed in this study and the five species analyzed in previous studies, ranged from 149,860 (M. sikokianus) to 151,707 bp (H. verticillatum). The overall GC contents of the genomes were almost identical (37.6 to 37.8%). The thirteen chloroplast genomes each contained 113 unique genes comprising 79 protein-coding genes, 30 tRNA genes, and four rRNA genes. Among the annotated genes, sixteen genes contained one or two introns. Although the genome structures of all Orostachys and Hylotelephium species were identical, Meterostachys differed in structure due to a relatively large gene block (trnS-GCU-trnS-GGA) inversion. The nucleotide diversity among the subsect. Orostachys chloroplast genomes was extremely low in all regions, and among the subsect. Appendiculatae, genus Orostachys, and all thirteen chloroplast genomes showed high values of Pi (>0.03) in one, five, or three regions. The phylogenetic analysis showed that Orostachys formed polyphyly, and subsect. Orostachys and Appendiculatae were clustered with Hylotelephium and Meterostachys, respectively, supporting the conclusion that each subsection should be considered as an independent genus. Furthermore, the data supported the taxonomic position of O. margaritifolia and O. iwarenge f. magnus, which were treated as synonyms for O. iwarenge in a previous study, as independent taxa. Our results suggested that O. ramosa and O. japonica f. polycephala were individual variations of O. malacophylla and O. japonica, respectively. The exact taxonomic position of O. latielliptica and the phylogenetic relationship among the three species, O. chongsunensis, O. malacophylla and O. ramosa, should be a topic of future study. The chloroplast (cp) genome sequence is determined and analyzed for Orostachys minuta for the first time. The cp genome was 150,369 bp in length, containing a large single-copy (LSC) of 82,795 bp and a small single-copy (SSC) of 16,854 bp, which were separated by a pair of 25,360 bp inverted repeats (IRs). The overall G + C content of the O. minuta cp genome amounted to 37.7%. In total, 113 unique genes were annotated, consisting of 79 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 30 transfer RNAs (tRNAs), and four ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs). Among these genes, 18 contained one or two introns. A maximum-likelihood (ML) phylogenetic analysis based on 33 taxa showed that O. minuta formed a clade with O. japonica. This study will provide a baseline as well as valuable molecular phylogenomic information for various future studies to determine the taxonomic position and phylogenetic relationships of the genus Orostachys. In this study, an integrated deep learning framework was developed for classifying the periodontitis stages of each individual tooth using dental panoramic radiographs. Based on actual patient panoramic radiographs data, the bone loss by periodontitis and cementoenamel junction boundaries were detected, while the tooth number and tooth length were identified using data from AIHub, an open database platform. The two factors were integrated to classify and to evaluate the periodontitis staging on dental panoramic radiography. Periodontitis is classified into four stages based on the criteria of the radiographic bone level, as suggested at the relevant international conference in 2017. For the integrated deep learning framework developed in this study, the classification performance was evaluated by comparing the results of dental specialists, which indicated that the integrated framework had an accuracy of 0.929, with a recall and precision of 0.807 and 0.724, respectively, in average across all four stages. The novel framework was thus shown to exhibit a relatively high level of performance, and the findings in this study are expected to assist dental specialists with detecting the periodontitis stage and subsequent effective treatment. Perilla (Perilla frutescens) oil reduces high-fat-diet-induced colon inflammation by suppressing the NF-κB pathway. In the current study, we compared the effect of endogenously produced and externally supplemented omega-3 fatty acids on high-fat-diet-induced colon inflammation. The fat-1 transgenic mice that endogenously synthesize omega-3 fatty acids were backcrossed with C57BL/6J wild-type mice to obtain transgenic (TR) and wild-type (WT) littermates. Five-week-old male littermates were divided into five groups: two groups fed 10% normal diet (WTLD, TRLD) and three groups fed with a 60% fat high-fat diet (WTHD, TRHD, and WTPO). In the WTPO group, 8% (w/w) of perilla oil was added. Perilla oil supplemented WT mice and fat-1 transgenic mice suppressed high-fat-diet-induced body weight and improved serum lipid levels. Furthermore, the WTPO and TRHD groups exhibited increased colon length, lower macroscopic scores, and reduced levels of pro-inflammatory markers and improved epithelial integrity barrier markers. The expression of GPR120 was increased in the WTPO group. Invadopodia are involved in cancer invasion by generating mechanical forces and secreting proteolytic enzymes. It is hypothesized that physical forces applied to integrin, especially α5β1 integrin, are strongly associated with the generation of invadopodial forces and protrusive activity of invadopodia; however, their mechanical relationship remains elusive. Here, a new deoxyribonucleic acid‐based force probe is developed for mapping α5β1 integrin tension with single‐molecule precision. Using this probe, the formation and maturation of invadopodia depending on integrin type and tension are investigated. In addition, the spatio‐temporal analysis of the integrin tension map is performed to measure changes in integrin tension and invadopodial force in each stage of invadopodia development. Consequently, it is found that α5β1 integrin tension above 40 pN is critical not only for adhesion but also for the maturation of invadopodia, eventually leading to the generation of a strong invadopodial force greater than 100 pN through α5β1 integrin‐ligand complexes with actomyosin contractility. Biologics are increasingly vital medicines that significantly reduce morbidity as well as mortality, yet access continues to be an issue even in apparently wealthy countries, such as the USA. While patient access is expected to improve with the introduction of biosimilars, misperceptions in a significant part based on terminology continue to make a sustained contribution by biosimilars difficult. Patients are and will continue to suffer needlessly if biosimilars continue to be impugned. Consequently, it is increasingly urgent that semantics are clarified, and in particular, the implication that interchangeable biologics are better biosimilars dismissed. This paper distinguishes between the real differences between biologics that matter clinically to patients and discusses the actual meaning of a US Food and Drug Administration designation of interchangeability for a biosimilar product. Using a sample of 15,741 graduates from the 2019 Korean Graduates Occupational Mobility National Survey, the study examines the effects of different types of vocational education, job skills-enhancing training and the quality management of university education on graduates employability. The results show that students' participation in internships and the suitability and usefulness of the university's curriculum have a great impact. Adenophora racemosa, belonging to the Campanulaceae, is an important species because it is endemic to Korea. The goal of this study was to assemble and annotate the chloroplast genome of A. racemosa and compare it with published chloroplast genomes of congeneric species. The chloroplast genome was reconstructed using de novo assembly of paired-end reads generated by the Illumina MiSeq platform. The chloroplast genome size of A. racemosa was 169,344 bp. In total, 112 unique genes (78 protein-coding genes, 30 tRNAs, and 4 rRNAs) were identified. A Maximum likelihood (ML) tree based on 76 protein-coding genes divided the five Adenophora species into two clades, showing that A. racemosa is more closely related to Adenophora stricta than to Adenophora divaricata. The gene order and contents of the LSC region of A. racemosa were identical to those of A. divaricata and A. stricta, but the structure of the SSC and IRs was unique due to IR contraction. Nucleotide diversity (Pi) >0.05 was found in eleven regions among the three Adenophora species not included in sect. Remotiflorae and in six regions between two species (A. racemosa and A. stricta). Background: Gene silencing using siRNA can be a new potent strategy to treat many incurable diseases at the genetic level, including cancer and viral infections. Treatments using siRNA essentially requires an efficient and safe method of delivering siRNA into cells while maintaining its stability. Thus, we designed novel synergistic fusion peptides, i.e., SPACE and oligoarginine. Results: Among the novel fusion peptides and siRNAs, nanocomplexes have enhanced cellular uptake and gene silencing effect in vitro and improved retention and gene silencing effects of siRNAs in vivo. Oligoarginine could attract siRNAs electrostatically to form stable and self-assembled nanocomplexes, and the SPACE peptide could interact with the cellular membrane via hydrogen bonding. Therefore, nanocomplexes using fusion peptides showed improved and evident cellular uptake and gene silencing of glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) via the lipid raft-mediated endocytosis pathway, especially to the HDFn cells of the skin, and all of the fusion peptides were biocompatible. Also, intratumorally injected nanocomplexes had increased retention time of siRNAs at the site of the tumor. Finally, nanocomplexes demonstrated significant in vivo gene silencing effect without overt tissue damage and immune cell infiltration. Conclusions: The new nanocomplex strategy could become a safe and efficient platform for the delivery of siRNAs into cells and tissues to treat various target diseases through gene silencing. Meterostachys is a monotypic genus of Crassulaceae, though its phylogenetic position remains unclear. Here, we report the complete chloroplast (cp) genome sequence of Meterostachys sikokianus using the Illumina high-throughput sequencing approach. The cp genome was 149,860 bp in length, containing a large single copy (LSC) of 82,293 bp and a small single copy (SSC) of 16,879 bp, which were separated by a pair of 25,344 bp inverted repeats (IRs). The overall GC content of the M. sikokianus cp genome was 37.6%. A total of 113 unique genes were annotated, consisting of 79 protein coding genes (PCGs), 30 transfer RNAs (tRNAs), and four ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs). Among these genes, eighteen contained one or two introns. A maximum-likelihood (ML) phylogenetic analysis based on 30 accessions of Crassulaceae showed that M. sikokianus was most closely related to Orostachys japonica and Orostachys fimbriata. The association between hepatitis virus infection and Parkinson's disease remains controversial. To determine whether hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections are associated with an increased risk of Parkinson's disease in Korean aged ≥40 years, we completed a population‐based prospective study including patients without infections and those with HBV, HCV and HBV/HCV infections from 2005 to 2015. We used the International Classification of Diseases 10th Revision to identify Parkinson's disease (G20) and chronic hepatitis C virus (B18.2) and chronic hepatitis B virus infections (B18.0 or B18.1). To identify Parkinson's disease risk, competing risk analysis adjusted for age, sex, comorbidities and death was performed. Overall, 1 010 317 patients (358 052, noninfection; 488 990, hepatitis B; 144 459 hepatitis C; and 18 680 hepatitis B/C) were included. The incidence density of Parkinson's disease per 10 000 person‐years was highest in the hepatitis C group (8.0), followed by the hepatitis B/C (6.8) and hepatitis B (5.0) groups. Hypertension, ischaemic heart disease, epilepsy, stroke and depressive disorder increased the hazard of Parkinson's disease in all groups. The adjusted hazard ratios were 1.25 (95% confidence interval: 1.17‐1.35), 1.39 (95% confidence interval: 1.27‐1.52) and 1.46 (95% confidence interval: 1.14‐1.85) in the HBV, HCV, and HBV/HCV groups, respectively. Our findings suggest that adult patient of 40 years and older with HBV and HCV infections should be monitored for signs of Parkinson's disease so that early intervention and accurate treatment can be provided for minimizing the development and consequences of Parkinson's disease. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of imaging features and texture analysis (TA) based on baseline rectal MRI for the early prediction of therapeutic response to neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) and tumor recurrence in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC). Methods: Consecutive patients with LARC who underwent rectal MRI between January 2014 and December 2015 and surgical resection after completing nCRT were retrospectively enrolled. Imaging features were analyzed, and TA parameters were extracted from the tumor volume of interest (VOI) from baseline rectal MRI. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was performed to evaluate the optimal TA parameter cutoff values to stratify the patients. Logistic and Cox regression analyses were performed to assess the efficacy of each imaging feature and texture parameter in predicting tumor response and disease-free survival. Results: In total, 78 consecutive patients were enrolled. In the logistic regression, good treatment response was associated with lower tumor location (OR = 13.284, p = 0.012), low Conv_Min (OR = 0.300, p = 0.013) and high Conv_Std (OR = 3.174, p = 0.016), Shape_Sphericity (OR = 3.170, p = 0.015), and Shape_Compacity (OR = 2.779, p = 0.032). In the Cox regression, a greater risk of tumor recurrence was related to higher cT stage (HR = 5.374, p = 0.044), pelvic side wall lymph node positivity (HR = 2.721, p = 0.013), and gray-level run length matrix_long-run low gray-level emphasis (HR = 2.268, p = 0.046). Conclusions: Imaging features and TA based on baseline rectal MRI could be valuable for predicting the treatment response to nCRT for rectal cancer and tumor recurrence. Acute appendicitis is one of the most common causes of abdominal emergencies. We investigated the feasibility of a neural-network-based diagnosis algorithm of appendicitis by using computed tomography (CT) for patients with acute abdominal pain visiting the emergency room (ER). A neural-network-based diagnostic algorithm of appendicitis was developed and validated using CT data from three institutions who visited the ER with abdominal pain and underwent abdominopelvic CT. For input data, 3D isotropic cubes including the appendix were manually extracted and labeled as appendicitis or a normal appendix. A 3D convolutional neural network (CNN) was trained to binary classification on the input. For model development and testing, 8-fold cross validation was conducted for internal validation and an ensemble model was used for external validation. Diagnostic performance was excellent in both the internal and external validation with an accuracy larger than 90%. The CNN-based diagnosis algorithm may be feasible in diagnosing acute appendicitis using the CT data of patients visiting the ER with acute abdominal pain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Republic of Korea has a high prevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, and the policies concerning costly antiviral medication have been revised recently. However, in the past 10 years, no related research on costs has been conducted. The objective of this study was to estimate the economic burden of viral hepatitis B and determine the trend of changes in its costs between 2002 and 2015. Claims data from the National Health Insurance Service were used. To identify viral hepatitis B cases, the ICD‐10th code B16, B17.0, B18.0 and B18.1 were used based on a primary diagnosis. This study was conducted from a societal perspective regarding both direct and indirect costs. Annual costs were adjusted for inflation by calculations based on the 2015 costs. The number of patients with viral hepatitis B increased from 213 758 in 2002 to 342 672 in 2015. The total socio‐economic costs increased from 127.1 million USD in 2002 to 459.1 million USD in 2015, mainly due to the increase in pharmaceutical costs, which accounted for the largest proportion of total costs since 2009—220.5 million USD in 2015, which was ~15 times higher than that in 2002. The healthcare costs for viral hepatitis B accounted for 0.13% of the national health expenditure in 2002, increasing to 0.31% in 2015. The economic burden of viral hepatitis B has increased in the Republic of Korea. This study aimed to investigate the real‐life effectiveness and safety of daclatasvir (DCV) and asunaprevir (ASV) combination therapy in Korean patients. We consecutively enrolled patients with genotype 1b hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection treated with at least one dose of DCV/ASV combination therapy in seven tertiary hospitals of South Korea. The sustained virologic response (SVR) rates and safety according to intention‐to‐treat (ITT) and per‐protocol (PP) analyses were evaluated. Among the 526 enrolled patients, 91% showed negative (87%) or "undetermined" (4%) resistance‐associated substitution (RAS); 9% did not undergo RAS testing. The SVR rates for ITT and PP were 89.3% and 95.0% in treatment‐naive patients and 93.2% and 95.6% in treatment‐experienced patients, respectively. In PP analysis, negative RAS was associated with higher SVR (96.3%) than with "undetermined RAS" (85.7%) or "not tested for RAS" (84.4%). Adverse events were reported in 185 (35.4%) patients, and events leading to discontinuation were observed in 4.3% of the study population. Forty‐two (8.0%) patients developed transaminase elevation (≥2 × upper normal limit), resulting in treatment discontinuation in six (1.1%) patients. DCV/ASV combination therapy showed acceptable efficacy in genotype 1b compensated HCV‐infected patients with negative pretreatment RAS. Although most adverse events were tolerable to continue antiviral treatment, adequate monitoring for transaminase elevation is warranted. Background: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) requires epidemiological monitoring to estimate its disease burden and to develop countermeasures. This study aimed to investigate the difference between the 2015 and 2009 nationwide anti-HCV seroprevalence and to determine linkage to care estimates in South Korea. Methods: A total 268,422 examinees ≥ 20 years old were included in 2015 from 33 medical institutions nationwide. Electronically extracted data were retrospectively analyzed to calculate the age-, sex-, and area-adjusted anti-HCV prevalence. Seroprevalence in 2015 was measured using the same method as that in 2009. For anti-HCV-positive subjects, medical records were reviewed to see whether HCV RNA testing or antiviral treatment was performed. Results: Adjusted anti-HCV prevalence was 0.60% (95% confidence interval, 0.57–0.63) based on general Korean population in 2015. It showed an increasing trend according to age; 0.23% in thirties, 0.38% in forties, 0.63% in fifties, 1.08% in sixties, and 1.65% in those aged ≥ 70 years. From 2009 to 2015, the adjusted anti-HCV prevalence decreased by 30%, with odds ratio of 0.70 (95% CI 0.70–0.71). There was significant intranational regional variation and changing pattern of seroprevalence. Among 1359 anti-HCV-positive subjects, HCV RNA test was performed in 60% and 25.4% had positivity. Treatment-initiated and cured rates in 2015 were 18.5% and 10.9%, respectively. Conclusions: Anti-HCV prevalence in South Korea was 0.6% in 2015, showing a 30% decrease from that in 2009. Background and Aim: For genotype 2 chronic hepatitis C (CHC), the efficacy and safety of sofosbuvir plus ribavirin therapy (SOF + RBV) was better than pegylated interferon plus ribavirin therapy (PR) at a greater drug cost. This study investigated the cost‐effectiveness of SOF + RBV compared with PR for treatment‐naïve genotype 2 CHC in South Korea. Methods: Using a decision analytic Markov model, a cost‐effectiveness analysis comparing SOF + RBV with PR or no treatment for treatment‐naïve genotype 2 CHC was performed with probabilistic and deterministic sensitivity analyses from the payer's perspective in 2017. Three cohorts of patients aged 40–49, 50–59, and 60–69 years were simulated to progress through the fibrosis stages F0–F4 to end‐stage liver disease, hepatocellular carcinoma, or death. Published and calculated data on the clinical efficacy of the regimen, health‐related quality of life, costs, and transition probabilities were used. Results: While the incremental cost‐effectiveness ratio for PR was dominant over no treatment, the incremental cost‐effectiveness ratios for SOF + RBV were $20 058 for the patients in their 40s, $19 662 for those in their 50s, and $22 278 for those in their 60s compared with PR. Probabilistic sensitivity analysis indicated an 89.0% probability for the SOF + RBV to be cost‐effective at a willingness to pay of $29 754.4 (per‐capita gross domestic product in 2017) for the patients in their 40s and 94.1% and 89.1% for the patients in their 50s and 60s, respectively. We report the complete chloroplast genomes of four Viola species (V. mirabilis, V. phalacrocarpa, V. raddeana, and V. websteri) and the results of a comparative analysis between these species and the published plastid genome of the congeneric species V. seoulensis. The total genome length of the five Viola species, including the four species analyzed in this study and the species analyzed in the previous study, ranged from 156,507 (V. seoulensis) to 158,162 bp (V. mirabilis). The overall GC contents of the genomes were almost identical (36.2–36.3%). The five Viola plastomes each contained 111 unique genes comprising 77 protein-coding genes, 30 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, and 4 ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes. Among the annotated genes, 16 contained one or two introns. Based on the results of a chloroplast genome structure comparison using MAUVE, all five Viola plastomes were almost identical. Additionally, the large single copy (LSC), inverted repeat (IR), and small single copy (SSC) junction regions were conserved among the Viola species. A total of 259 exon, intron, and intergenic spacer (IGS) fragments were compared to verify the divergence hotspot regions. The nucleotide diversity (Pi) values ranged from 0 to 0.7544. The IR region was relatively more conserved than the LSC and SSC regions. The Pi values in ten noncoding regions were relatively high (>0.03). Among these regions, all but rps19-trnH, petG-trnW, rpl16-rps3, and rpl2-rpl23 represent useful molecular markers for phylogenetic studies and will be helpful to resolve the phylogenetic relationships of Viola. The phylogenetic tree, which used 76 protein-coding genes from 21 Malpighiales species and one outgroup species (Averrhoa carambola), revealed that Malpighiales is divided into five clades at the family level: Erythroxylaceae, Chrysobalanaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Salicaceae, and Violaceae. Background/Aim: In the era of direct‐acting antivirals (DAA), active screening for hidden hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is important for HCV elimination. This study estimated the cost‐effectiveness and health‐related outcomes of HCV screening and DAA treatment of a targeted population in Korea, where anti‐HCV prevalence was 0.6% in 2015. Methods: A Markov model simulating the natural history of HCV infection was used to examine the cost‐effectiveness of two strategies: no screening vs screening and DAA treatment. Screening was performed by integration of the anti‐HCV test into the National Health Examination Program. From a healthcare system's perspective, the cost‐utility and the impact on HCV‐related health events of one‐time anti‐HCV screening and DAA treatment in Korean population aged 40‐65 years was analysed with a lifetime horizon. Results: The HCV screening and DAA treatment strategy increased quality‐adjusted life years (QALY) by 0.0015 at a cost of $11.27 resulting in an incremental cost‐effectiveness ratio (ICER) of $7435 per QALY gained compared with no screening. The probability of the screening strategy to be cost‐effective was 98.8% at a willingness‐to‐pay of $27 205. Deterministic sensitivity analyses revealed the ICERs were from $4602 to $12 588 and sensitive to screening costs, discount rates and treatment acceptability. Moreover, it can prevent 32 HCV‐related deaths, 19 hepatocellular carcinomas and 15 decompensated cirrhosis per 100 000 screened persons. Conclusions: A one‐time HCV screening and DAA treatment of a Korean population aged 40‐65 years would be highly cost‐effective, and significantly reduce the HCV‐related morbidity and mortality compared with no screening. Background: Ultrasonography (US) is recommended as a standard surveillance tool for patients with a high risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the low sensitivity of US for small HCC can lead to surveillance failure, resulting in advanced stage tumor presentations. For the early detection of HCC in high-risk patients and to improve survival and prognosis, a new efficient imaging tool with a high sensitivity for HCC detection is needed. The purpose of this study is to evaluate and compare the feasibility and efficacy of non-contrast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with US as a surveillance tool for HCC in patients with liver cirrhosis.Methods: MAGNUS-HCC is a prospective, multicenter clinical trial with a crossover design for a single arm of patients. This study was approved by six Institutional Review Boards, and informed consent was obtained from all participants. All patients will undergo liver US every 6 months and non-contrast liver MRI every 12 months during a follow-up period of 3 years. If a focal liver lesion suspected of harboring HCC is detected, dynamic liver computed tomography (CT) will be performed to confirm the diagnosis. After the last surveillance round, patients without suspicion of HCC or who are not diagnosed with HCC will be evaluated with a dynamic liver CT to exclude false-negative findings. The primary endpoint is to compare the rate of detection of HCC by US examinations performed at 6-month intervals with that of yearly non-contrast liver MRI studies during a 3-year follow-up. The secondary endpoint is the survival of the patients who developed HCC within the 3-year follow-up period.Discussion: MAGNUS-HCC is the first study to compare the feasibility of non-contrast MRI with US as a surveillance tool for the detection of HCC in high-risk patients. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to describe the clinical characteristics of acute hemorrhagic rectal ulcer (AHRU) and to elucidate its predictive factors. METHODS The medical records of patients with AHRU were retrospectively reviewed. Their baseline clinical characteristics were compared with those of patients with non-AHRU lower gastrointestinal bleeding to identify predictive factors for AHRU. RESULTS Among the 118 patients who underwent emergency endoscopy due to acute massive hematochezia from 2013 to 2015, 25 (21.2%) were diagnosed as having AHRU. Of them, 22 (88.0%) were successfully managed endoscopically and 3 (12.0%) underwent surgery. Six (24.0%) patients developed rebleeding within 1-9 days after the initial bleeding, which was controlled by a repeat endoscopy. Five (20.0%) died during follow-up. A multivariate-adjusted logistic regression analysis revealed that a lower serum albumin level, worse Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status and history of constipation were significant factors for predicting AHRU. Hypoalbuminemia (<30 g/L) had a sensitivity, specificity and positive and negative predictive values of 84.0%, 78.5%, 51.2% and 94.8% for predicting AHRU, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Approximately 20% of patients with massive hematochezia had AHRU. Most patients with AHRU can be managed endoscopically. Low serum albumin level, poor ECOG performance status and prior constipation could be used in distinguishing patients with and without AHRU, facilitating the selection of optimal bowel preparation method for massive hematochezia. MicroRNAs post-transcriptionally regulate gene expression in animals and plants. The aim of this study was to identify new target genes for microRNA polymorphisms (miR-146aC>G and miR-196a2T>C) in primary ovarian insufficiency (POI). We cloned and transfected miR-146aC>G and miR-196a2T>C into human granulosa cells and used microarrays and qPCR-arrays to examine the changes in the messenger RNA expression profile. We show miR-146aC>G and miR-196a2T>C change the mRNA expression patterns in granulosa cell. In each case, mRNAs were up or down-regulated after treatments with miR-146a C or G and miR-196a2 T or C. We found that miR-146a led to a significantly altered regulation of the mRNA levels of FOXO3, FOXL2 and CCND2 compared to controls. We also found that the polymorphisms of miR-146a led to a significantly altered regulation of CCND2 and FOXO3. Our results suggest that miR-146aC>G and miR-196a2T>C can regulate the levels of many of their target transcripts. We report the complete chloroplast genomes of three Adenophora species, and analyzed these compared them to five published Campanuloid plastomes. The total genome length of Adenophora divaricata, Adenophora erecta, and Adenophora stricta ranged from 159,759 to 176,331 bp. Among the eight Campanuloid species, many inversions were found to be only in the LSC region. IR contraction was also identified in the plastid genome of Adenophora stricta. Phylogenetic analyses based on 76 protein coding genes showed that Campanuloids are monophyletic, and are composed of two major groups: Campanula s. str. and Rapunculus. When we compared each homologous locus among the four Adenophora species, ten regions showed high nucleotide divergence value (>0.03). Among these, nine loci, excepting ycf3-rpoB, are considered to be useful molecular markers for phylogenetic studies and will be helpful to resolve phylogenetic relationships of Adenophora. Background and aim: Little is known about population-based epidemiology and disease burden of autoimmune hepatitis (AIH). The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence, incidence, comorbidity and direct medical cost of AIH in South Korea. Methods: The data was from the nationwide, population-based National Health Insurance Service claims database and the Rare Intractable Disease registration program. Age and gender-specific prevalence rates were calculated, and data on comorbidity, diagnostic tests, prescribed drugs, and medical costs were retrieved for patients registered under the disease code K75.4 (AIH) from 2009 to 2013. Results: A total of 4,085 patients with AIH were identified between 2009 and 2013 with a female-to-male ratio of 6.4. The age-adjusted prevalence rate was 4.82/100,000 persons and gender adjusted prevalence rates were 8.35 in females and 1.30 in males. The age-adjusted calculated incidence rate was 1.07/100,000 persons (gender-adjusted 1.83 in females and 0.31 in males). Ascites, variceal bleeding, and hepatocellular carcinoma were found in 1.4%, 1.3%, and 2.2% of the patients, respectively. Forty-six patients (1.1%) underwent liver transplantation during the study period. Case-fatality was 2.18%. Corticosteroid and azathioprine were prescribed in 44.1% and 38.0% of prevalent patients with AIH in 2013, respectively. The nationwide total direct medical cost was less than 4.0 million USD, and the average cost for each patient was 1,174 USD in 2013. Conclusion: This is the first report on the nationwide epidemiology of AIH in Korea, and it showed a lower prevalence than that of Western countries with considerable disease burden. National research management organizations need to ensure that research proposals are reviewed fairly and efficiently, which requires the selection of suitable reviewers. In particular, reviewing research proposals in a particular area necessitates the selection of a group with the most reasonable standard for recommending an expert in that area. In this study, we develop an automatic matching system that matches a research proposal with a reviewer who can evaluate it most effectively, using keywords with fuzzy weights based on databases in the corresponding field of research. All functions that we developed were based on the MapReduce framework created by Hadoop, which was verified to enhance matching performance and ensure expandability. This enabled us to select suitable researchers from existing research projects, papers and research reviewer databases. Background/Aims: The epidemiologic shift of hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection in the South Korean population resulted in a peak outbreak of hepatitis in 2009. The aim of this study was to clarify the seropositivity of anti-HAV antibody (anti-HAV) and its demographic characteristics before and after the peak outbreak from 2005 to 2014. Methods: This retrospective study analyzed the anti-HAV data of all individuals from 1,795 medical institutions referred to a major central laboratory from January 2005 through December 2014, as a sentineal tool for monitoring annual variation of anti-HAV positivity. The prevalence of anti-HAV was adjusted for age and area with the standard population based on the 2010 Census data. Results: A total of 424,245 individuals were included in this study. The overall age-adjusted anti-HAV prevalence decreased from 65.6% in 2005 to 62.2% in 2014. During the 10-year period, the seroprevalence continuously decreased in persons aged 30 to 39 years (69.6% to 32.4%) and those aged 40 to 49 years (97.9% to 79.3%) due to the cohort effect. In contrast, it increased in persons aged 10 to 19 years (15.4% to 35.2%), while it was the lowest (8.7%) in 2010 before rebounding to 20.2% in 2014 in persons aged 20 to 29 years due to a vaccination effect. Conclusion: Although the HAV vaccination rate increased, the anti-HAV seropositivity in South Korea decreased from 65.6% to 62.2% in this study population. In particular, the immunity of young adults was still low, and an outbreak of HAV is possible in the near future. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a major cause of liver cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and liver-related mortality. The new antiviral drugs against HCV, direct acting antivirals, result in >90% cure rate. This review aimed to summarize the current prevalence, clinical characteristics, outcomes, and treatment response associated with HCV infection, and countermeasures for optimal HCV control in South Korea. Based on a literature review, the current anti-HCV prevalence in the Korean population is 0.6 to 0.8%, with increasing prevalence according to age. The major HCV genotypes in Korean patients were genotype 1b and genotype 2. Successful antiviral treatment leads to significantly reduced liver related complications and mortality. However, only about one third of the individuals with HCV infection seem to be managed under the current national health insurance system, suggesting a remarkable rate of underdiagnoses and subsequent loss of opportunity to cure. A recent study in South Korea showed that targeted population screening for HCV infection is cost-effective. To prevent recently developed clusters of HCV infection in some clinics, mandatory surveillance rather than sentinel surveillance for HCV infection is required and governmental countermeasures to prevent reuse of syringes or other medical devises, and public education should be maintained. Moreover, one-time screening for a targeted population should be considered and a cost-effectiveness study supporting an optimal screening strategy is warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The complete chloroplast genome sequence of Glochidion chodoense, an endemic species to Korea, was determined by Illumina pair-end sequencing. The complete cp genome was 157,085 bp in length, containing a large single copy (LSC) of 85,304 bp and a small single copy (SSC) of 17,635 bp, which were separated by a pair of 27,073 bp inverted repeats (IRs). A total of 111 unique genes were annotated, including 78 protein-coding genes, 29 tRNA genes, and 4 rRNA genes. Among these genes, 18 genes contained an intron.
