Background: Posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) dislocation is a common complication of cataract surgery. Dislocated IOLs often require surgical intervention due to the potentially severe risks of leaving this condition untreated. If a patient with extremely low corneal endothelial cell density (ECD) presents with IOL dislocation, the surgeon faces a crucial dilemma of choosing the most optimal surgical treatment option. We sought to investigate the efficacy and safety of retropupillary iris claw intraocular lens (R-IOL) implantation in patients with IOL dislocation and extremely low (< 1000 cells/mm2) ECD. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of nine patients (all men) whose pre-operative ECD was < 1000 cells/mm2 and who underwent R-IOL implantation due to intraocular subluxation or total dislocation into the vitreous cavity between 2014 and 2020. We evaluated corneal endothelial function and visual outcomes after surgery. Results: Nine patients were included in this study. The mean age at diagnosis was 64.89 ± 7.15 years (range 57–76 years), and the follow-up duration was 37.93 ± 23.72 months (range 18.07–89.07 months). No patients developed bullous keratopathy during follow-up. Compared to the initial ECD, corneal thickness (CT), coefficient variation of cell area (CV) and percentage of hexagonal cells (HEX), there was no statistically significant decrease in the ECD, CV, and HEX at last follow-up (P = 0.944, 0.778, 0.445, 0.443). There was significant improvement in the mean uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) at the last follow-up (average 0.13 logMAR, 20/27 Snellen) compared to the pre-operative mean UDVA (average 1.09 logMAR, 20/250 Snellen) (P < 0.01). Conclusions: R-IOL implantation did not result in a statistically significant decline in corneal endothelial function in patients with preoperatively low ECD, and it significantly improved the mean UDVA postoperatively. R-IOL implantation appears to be a safe and effective treatment modality for intraocular lens dislocation in patients with low ECD (< 1000 cells/mm²); however, long-term follow-up studies are warranted to corroborate these findings. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are promising candidates replacing conventional batteries in wearable devices, owing to their self‐powering properties. Although TENGs can convert mechanical energy into electrical energy, excessive mechanical stresses can degrade their performance. Moreover, conformal adhesion to skin is required to improve its performance in wearable devices. Here, a stretchable, adhesive, and self‐healing single‐electrode TENG with a multifunctional hydrogel‐elastomer double layer is developed. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs)‐doped hydrogel is used as the electrode. Subsequently, the electrode is covered with an Ecoflex elastomer that acted as a triboelectrification layer. The soft tissue‐like properties of the hydrogel allow conformal adhesion to nonplanar skin, whereas the dynamic polymer network of the hydrogel endows toughness and ability to self‐heal (within 5 min) against external damage. The TENG demonstrates an output voltage and current peak at 180 V and 0.8 µA. Moreover, it can generate a maximum power peak at 37.8 mW m−2, which is sufficient to power small electronics like stopwatches and light‐emitting diodes, with a power management circuit. The proposed TENG devices can function as telecommunication touch panels via Morse code. Ensuring stable integration of diverse soft electronic components for reliable operation under dynamic conditions is crucial. However, integrating soft electronics, comprising various materials like polymers, metals, and hydrogels, poses challenges due to their different mechanical and chemical properties. This study introduces a dried-hydrogel adhesive made of poly(vinyl alcohol) and tannic acid multilayers (d-HAPT), which integrates soft electronic materials through moisture-derived chain entanglement. d-HAPT is a thin (~1 µm) and highly transparent (over 85% transmittance in the visible light region) adhesive, showing robust bonding (up to 3.6 MPa) within a short time (<1 min). d-HAPT demonstrates practical application in wearable devices, including a hydrogel touch panel and strain sensors. Additionally, the potential of d-HAPT for use in implantable electronics is demonstrated through in vivo neuromodulation and electrocardiographic recording experiments while confirming its biocompatibility both in vitro and in vivo. Sprout ginseng extract (ThinkGIN™) manufactured through a smart farm system has been shown to improve memory in preclinical studies. This study conducted a 12-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy and safety of ThinkGIN™ for improving memory in subjective memory impairment (SMI). Subjects aged 55 to 75 years with SMI participated in this study. A total of 80 subjects who met the inclusion/exclusion criteria were assigned to the ThinkGIN™ group (n = 40, 450 mg ThinkGIN™/day) or a placebo group (n = 40). Efficacy and safety evaluations were conducted before intervention and at 12 weeks after intervention. As a result of 12 weeks of ThinkGIN™ intake, significant differences in SVLT, RCFT, MoCA-K, PSQI-K, and AChE were observed between the two groups. Safety evaluation (AEs, laboratory tests, vital signs, and electrocardiogram) revealed that ThinkGIN™ was safe with no clinically significant changes. Long-term hepatic damage is associated with human morbidity and mortality owing to numerous pathogenic factors. A variety of studies have focused on improving liver health using natural products and herbal medicines. We aimed to investigate the effect of enzyme-treated Zizania latifolia ethanol extract (ETZL), which increases the content of tricin via enzymatic hydrolysis, for 8 weeks on liver-related outcomes, lipid metabolism, antioxidant activity, and fatigue compared to a placebo. Healthy Korean adult males aged 19–60 years were randomized into ETZL treatment and placebo groups, and alcohol consumption was 24.96 and 28.64 units/week, respectively. Alanine transaminase, a blood marker associated with liver cell injury, significantly decreased after 8 weeks compared to the baseline in the ETZL treatment group (p = 0.004). After 8 weeks, the treatment group showed significant changes in the levels of high-density lipoprotein and hepatic steatosis index compared to the baseline (p = 0.028 and p = 0.004, respectively). ETZL treatment tended to reduce antioxidant-activity-related factors, total antioxidant status, and malondialdehyde, but there was no significant difference. In the multidimensional fatigue scale, ETZL treatment showed a significant reduction in general fatigue and total-fatigue-related values after 8 weeks compared to the baseline (p = 0.012 and p = 0.032, respectively). Taken together, the 8-week treatment of enzyme-treated Zizania latifolia ethanol extract demonstrated positive effects on liver-related outcomes, lipid metabolism, and mental fatigue without adverse effects on safety-related parameters. This study aims to design the onboard waste-to-energy process to dispose waste plastic debris floating in the ocean. Collected marine debris undergoes pretreatment such as freezing and pulverization process. The pretreated plastic waste is transformed into hydrogen through plasma gasification, separation and purification which finally produces electricity by fuel-cell system. The hydrogen separation and purification process consist of water gas shift reaction and pressure swing adsorption process. Lab-scale experiments for the separation and purification process were carried out as a preliminary study prior to designing a practical scale integrated system. For low-temperature water gas shift, Cu–Zn–Al catalyst calcined under nitrogen atmosphere outperformed typical commercial catalysts. Process simulations indicate the need of additional apparatus such as heat exchanger, dehumidifier, and compressor for practical operation of the combined waste-to-energy process. Introduction: Basicervical femoral neck fracture (FNF) is an uncommon type of femoral neck fracture and is associated with an increased risk of fixation failure due to its inherent instability. The purpose of this study was to compare the surgical parameters and reoperation rate between the use of a multiple cannulated screw (MCS) and fixed angle device (FAD) in treating basicervical FNFs. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 885 patients who underwent internal fixation between May 2004 and August 2019 to determine basicervical FNF with at least 12 months of follow-up. Among the identified 77 patients with basicervical FNF, 17 patients who underwent multiple cannulated screw (MCS) fixation and 36 patients who underwent fixed angle device (FAD) fixation were included. We compared the rates of fracture-site collapse and reoperations according to the fixation device. Results: Among the 53 patients with basicervical FNF, 13 patients (24.5%) sustained surgical complications (8 collapses of fracture site and 5 reoperations). The reoperation rate in the MCS group was significantly higher than that in the FAD group (23.5% vs. 2.8%, p = 0.016), without any significant difference in the collapse of the fracture site (11.8% vs. 16.7%, p = 0.642). Conclusions: Although basicervical FNF was rare among hip fractures, fracture site collapse was prevalent and prone to fixation failure. This study aims to enhance second language (L2) learners' motivation and facilitate successful L2 learning by using motivational languaging, an intervention that encourages learners to reflect on, and externalize, their L2-speaking, competent future self-concepts by writing or speaking about them. Two types of effective languaging activities were developed: individual and group writing. Participants were 264 Grade 10 high school students, divided into three groups: one control group and two experimental groups. Using activity workbooks, the first experimental group engaged in 'individual writing' guided by a series of questions in their workbooks (e.g. reasons for learning English and their ideal images of using English). The second experimental group carried out 'group writing', including group discussions and writing of group members' opinions. The activities were conducted in the participants' first language, Korean, for 30–40 minutes once a week for six weeks. The results indicated, in the two experimental groups, that the participants' L2 learning motivation was enhanced, including the ideal L2 self. When observing the changes in the influence of motivation on motivated L2 learning behavior and English proficiency, meaningful increases were only found in the individual writing group, with the ideal L2 self showing more powerful impact on the two criterion measures after the activities. Developing thin, highly stretchable coatings that inhibit the undesirable adhesion of biological substances on soft and high‐water‐content biomaterial surfaces is an area of significant interest. In this study, a stretchable antifouling coating named lubricant‐infused poly(1,3,5,7‐tetramethyl‐1,3,5,7‐tetravinyl cyclotetrasiloxane) (V4D4) is introduced interface with perfluoropolymer (L‐VIP). The stretchable adhesive‐perfluoropolymer bilayer comprises stretchable adhesive polymer (V4D4) and perfluoropolymer (1H,1H,2H,2H‐perfluorooctyl methacrylate (FOMA)). The bilayer exhibits a strong affinity with the lubricant, imparting exceptional antifouling and slippery properties. L‐VIP coating displays superior fouling resistance against plasma proteins related to foreign body reactions (FBR) and biofilm‐forming bacteria. The coating exhibits impressive elastic limits exceeding 200% strain and exceptional stability under repeated cyclic stretching (> 2000 cycles at 150% strain) while maintaining its antifouling properties. Furthermore, the coating presents dielectric performance under accelerated aging conditions at a temperature of 70° and constant voltage stress of 10 V s−1 for over 50 days. To assess the biocompatibility of the L‐VIP coating, a series of in vitro and in vivo experiments are conducted, confirming its non‐toxicity for biomedical applications. It is expected that the stretchable L‐VIP coating will enhance medical devices' longevity and help prevent bacterial infections, the formation of biofilms, and the nonspecific adherence of biological substances after implantation. This study was conducted to confirm the Cs-137 and Sr-90 adsorption properties of illite. In the experimental method, illite was added to Cs-137 and Sr-90 solutions and stirred. And Following the completion of the adsorption reaction, the solid/liquid phase was separated using a centrifuge, and the adsorption rate was calculated by measuring the radioactivity concentration of the separated liquid phase using a gamma nuclide analyzer, Liquid Scintillation Count (LSC). Bone homeostasis is maintained by tightly coordinated activities of bone-forming osteoblasts and bone-resorbing osteoclasts. In the present report, the role of Mer tyrosine kinase (MerTK) in bone metabolism was investigated. The expression of MerTK decreased upon BMP2 stimulation of osteoblast precursors. The femurs of Mertk -deficient mice showed significantly increased bone volume with concomitant increase of bone formation and reduction in bone resorption. These bone phenotypes were attributed to the increased osteoblast differentiation and mineralization accounted by the enhanced β-catenin and Smad signaling in the absence of MerTK in osteoblast precursors. Although the Mertk -deficient bone marrow macrophages were predisposed to enhanced osteoclast differentiation via augmented Ca2+-NFATc1 signaling, the dramatic increase of Tnfsf11b/Tnfsf11 (Opg/Rankl) ratio in Mertk knockout bones and osteoblast precursors corroborated the reduction of osteoclastogenesis in Mertk deficiency. In ligature-induced periodontitis and ovariectomy models, the bone resorption was significantly attenuated in Mertk -deficient mice compared with wild-type control. Taken together, these data indicate novel role of MerTK in bone metabolism and suggest a potential strategy targeting MerTK in treating bone-lytic diseases including periodontitis and osteoporosis. In the process of pyrolyzing waste plastics, the generation of Cl2 gas can pose a problem. During the pyrolysis processing, incomplete combustion of organic compounds containing chlorine can lead to the formation of toxic chemicals, which can cause issues in subsequent processing stages. Therefore, an adsorbent plays an important role in removing Cl2 in the dechlorination process, and alkaline adsorbents and metal oxides are generally used. Waste red mud is composed of Fe metal oxide and alkaline components, so it is intended to be used as a Cl2 adsorbent. The Cl2 removal ability of red mud with different redox status of iron oxides was assessed. Hydrogen treatment was performed at various temperatures to control the reduction potential of the Fe in the metal oxides, and phase changes in the Fe oxide component of red mud were confirmed. In the case of red mud hydrogenated at 700 °C, most of the Fe2O3 structure could be converted to the Fe3O4 structure, and the Fe3O4 structure showed superior results in Cl2 adsorption compared to the Fe2O3 structure. As a result, red mud at an H2 treatment temperature of 700 °C showed about three times higher Cl2 adsorption compared to red mud without H2 treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nymphoides peltata has been used as a medicinal herb in traditional medicines to treat strangury, polyuria, and swelling. The phytochemical investigation of the MeOH extract of N. peltata roots led to the isolation of three iridoid glycosides and three coumarin glycoside derivatives, which were characterized as menthiafolin (1), threoninosecologanin (2), callicoside C (3), and scopolin (4), as well as two undescribed peltatamarins A (5) and B (6). The chemical structures of the undescribed compounds were determined by analyzing their 1 dimensional (D) and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra and using high-resolution (HR)-electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy (ESI-MS), along with the chemical reaction of acid hydrolysis. The wound healing activities of the isolated compounds 1–6 were evaluated using a HaCaT cell scratch test. Among the isolates, scopolin (4) and peltatamarin A (5) promoted HaCaT cell migration over scratch wounds, and compound 5 was the most effective. Furthermore, compound 5 significantly promoted cell migration without adversely affecting cell proliferation, even when treated at a high dose (100 μM). In this study, a novel film of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/pullulan (PULL) with improved surface characteristics was prepared from poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc)/PULL blend films with various mass ratios after the saponification treatment in a heterogeneous medium. According to proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), Fourier transform infrared, and X-ray diffraction results, it was established that the successful fabrication of saponified PVA/PULL (100/0, 90/10, and 80/20) films could be obtained from PVAc/PULL (100/0, 90/10, and 80/20) films, respectively, after 72 h saponification at 50 °C. The degree of saponification calculated from 1H-NMR analysis results showed that fully saponified PVA was obtained from all studied films. Improved hydrophilic characteristics of the saponified films were revealed by a water contact angle test. Moreover, the saponified films showed improved mechanical behavior, and the micrographs of saponified films showed higher surface roughness than the unsaponified films. This kind of saponified film can be widely used for biomedical applications. Moreover, the reported saponified film dressing extended the lifespan of dressing as determined by its self-healing capacity and considerably advanced in vivo wound-healing development, which was attributed to its multifunctional characteristics, meaning that saponified film dressings are promising candidates for full-thickness skin wound healing. Black ginseng (BG) is processed ginseng traditionally made in Korea via the steaming and drying of ginseng root through three or more cycles, leading to changes in its appearance due to the Maillard reaction on its surface, resulting in a dark coloration. In this study, we explored markers for differentiating processed ginseng by analyzing the chemical characteristics of BG. We elucidated a new method for the structural identification of ginsenoside metabolites and described the features of processed ginseng using UPLC-QTOF-MS in the positive ion mode. We confirmed that maltose, glucose, and fructose, along with L-arginine, L-histidine, and L-lysine, were the key compounds responsible for the changes in the external quality of BG. These compounds can serve as important metabolic markers for distinguishing BG from conventionally processed ginseng. The major characteristics of white ginseng, red ginseng, and BG can be distinguished based on their high-polarity and low-polarity ginsenosides, and a precise method for the structural elucidation of ginsenosides in the positive ion mode is presented. Lipid biosynthesis is recently studied its functions in a range of cellular physiology including differentiation and regeneration. However, it still remains to be elucidated in its precise function. To reveal this, we evaluated the roles of lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) signaling in alveolar bone formation using the LPA type 2 receptor (LPAR2) antagonist AMG‐35 (Amgen Compound 35) using tooth loss without periodontal disease model which would be caused by trauma and usually requires a dental implant to restore masticatory function. In this study, in vitro cell culture experiments in osteoblasts and periodontal ligament fibroblasts revealed cell type‐specific responses, with AMG‐35 modulating osteogenic differentiation in osteoblasts in vitro. To confirm the in vivo results, we employed a mouse model of tooth loss without periodontal disease. Five to 10 days after tooth extraction, AMG‐35 facilitated bone formation in the tooth root socket as measured by immunohistochemistry for differentiation markers KI67, Osteocalcin, Periostin, RUNX2, transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF‐β1) and SMAD2/3. The increased expression and the localization of these proteins suggest that AMG‐35 elicits osteoblast differentiation through TGF‐β1 and SMAD2/3 signaling. These results indicate that LPAR2/TGF‐β1/SMAD2/3 represents a new signaling pathway in alveolar bone formation and that local application of AMG‐35 in traumatic tooth loss can be used to facilitate bone regeneration and healing for further clinical treatment. Glomerular epithelial protein-1 (Glepp1), a R3 subtype family of receptor-type protein tyrosine phosphatases, plays important role in the activation of Src family kinases and regulates cellular processes such as cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. In this study, we firstly examined the functional evaluation of Glepp1 in tooth development and morphogenesis. The precise expression level and developmental function of Glepp1 were examined by RT-qPCR, in situ hybridization, and loss and gain of functional study using a range of in vitro organ cultivation methods. Expression of Glepp1 was detected in the developing tooth germs in cap and bell stage of tooth development. Knocking down Glepp1 at E13 for 2 days showed the altered expression levels of tooth development-related signaling molecules, including Bmps, Dspp, Fgf4, Lef1, and Shh. Moreover, transient knock down of Glepp1 revealed alterations in cellular physiology, examined by the localization patterns of Ki67 and E-cadherin. Similarly, knocking down of Glepp1 showed disrupted enamel rod and interrod formation in 3-week renal transplanted teeth. In addition, due to attrition of odontoblastic layers, the expression signals of Dspp and the localization of NESTIN were almost not detected after knock down of Glepp1; however, their expressions were increased after Glepp1 overexpression. Thus, our results suggested that Glepp1 plays modulating roles during odontogenesis by regulating the expression levels of signaling molecules and cellular events to achieve the proper structural formation of hard tissue matrices in mice molar development. Nymphoides peltata (Menyanthaceae) has been used as a medicinal herb in traditional medicines to treat conditions such as strangury, polyuria, swelling, and as a diuretic and antipyretic. In our ongoing research to discover novel structural and/or biological natural products in natural resources, five flavonoids, quercetin (1), quercitrin (2), isoquercetin (3), quercetin-3-O-vicianoside (4), and rutin (5), as well as a new flavonoid glycoside, 3‴-O-foliamenthoyl-rutin (6), were isolated from the MeOH extract of N. peltata roots. The chemical structure of the new compound (6) was determined by analyzing 1D and 2D NMR spectra and high-resolution (HR) electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy (ESIMS), along with a chemical reaction. The wound-healing activities of the isolated compounds (1–6) were evaluated using a HaCaT cell scratch test. Among the isolates, isoquercetin (3), quercetin-3-O-vicianoside (4), and 3‴-O-foliamenthoyl-rutin (6) promoted HaCaT cell migration over scratch wounds, with compound 4 being the most effective. This study aimed to identify and elucidate the mechanism underlying the protective effect of tricin-enriched Zizania latifolia (Z. latifolia) extract (ETZL) against free fatty acid (FFA)-induced lipid accumulation in vitro and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) induced by a high-fat diet and fructose diet (HFD/F) in vivo. ETZL treatment significantly lowered body weight gain and decreased adipose tissue, lipid, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels in HFD/F-fed mice. ETZL acted on phosphorylated acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) and anti-peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) by activating the adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway and inhibiting sterol regulatory element-binding proteins-1 (SREBP)/fatty acid synthase (FAS) signaling to inhibit de novo adipogenesis and increase fatty acid oxidation. In addition, treatment with ETZL increased nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) levels to activate the antioxidant pathway. FFA-induced oxidative stress and fatty acid accumulation in HepG2 cells confirmed the improvement in fat accumulation through the AMPK and Nrf2 pathway activities of ETZL. Background: The modulation of immune responses by probiotics is crucial for local and systemic immunity. Recent studies have suggested a correlation between gut microbiota and lung immunity, known as the gut–lung axis. However, the evidence and mechanisms underlying this axis remain elusive. Results: In this study, we screened various Lactobacillus (L.) strains for their ability to augment type I interferon (IFN-I) signaling using an IFN-α/β reporter cell line. We identified L. paracasei (MI29) from the feces of healthy volunteers, which showed enhanced IFN-I signaling in vitro. Oral administration of the MI29 strain to wild-type B6 mice for 2 weeks resulted in increased expression of IFN-stimulated genes and pro-inflammatory cytokines in the lungs. We found that MI29-treated mice had significantly increased numbers of CD11c+PDCA-1+ plasmacytoid dendritic cells and Ly6Chi monocytes in the lungs compared with control groups. Pre-treatment with MI29 for 2 weeks resulted in less weight loss and lower viral loads in the lung after a sub-lethal dose of influenza virus infection. Interestingly, IFNAR1−/− mice did not show enhanced viral resistance in response to oral MI29 administration. Furthermore, metabolic profiles of MI29-treated mice revealed changes in fatty acid metabolism, with MI29-derived fatty acids contributing to host defense in a Gpr40/120-dependent manner. Conclusions: These findings suggest that the newly isolated MI29 strain can activate host defense immunity and prevent infections caused by the influenza virus through the gut–lung axis. Hydrogels are used in wound dressings because of their tissue‐like softness and biocompatibility. However, the clinical translation of hydrogels remains challenging because of their long‐term stability, water swellability, and poor tissue adhesiveness. Here, tannic acid (TA) is introduced into a double network (DN) hydrogel consisting of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) to realize a tough, self‐healable, nonswellable, conformally tissue‐adhesive, hemostatic, and antibacterial hydrogel. The TA within the DN hydrogel forms a dynamic network, enabling rapid self‐healing (within 5 min) and offering effective energy dissipation for toughness and viscoelasticity. Furthermore, the hydrophobic moieties of TA provide a water‐shielding effect, rendering the hydrogel nonswellable. A simple chemical modification to the hydrogel further strengthens its interfacial adhesion with tissues (shear strength of ≈31 kPa). Interestingly, the TA also can serve as an effective hemostatic (blood‐clotting index of 58.40 ± 1.5) and antibacterial component, which are required for a successful wound dressing. The antibacterial effects of the hydrogel are tested against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Nymphoides peltata has been widely used pharmacologically in traditional Chinese medicine to treat heat strangury and polyuria. The aim of this study was to isolate the bioactive components from N. peltata and evaluate their potential use as antioxidant and anti-wrinkle agents. Phytochemical investigation of the methanolic extract of N. peltata roots led to the isolation of 15 compounds (1–15), which were structurally determined as α-spinasterol (1), 3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-oleanolic acid 28-O-β-D-glucuronopyranoside (2), 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (3), protocatechuic acid (4), vanillic acid (5), p-coumaric acid (6), caffeic acid (7), ferulic acid (8), neochlorogenic acid (neo-CQA) (9), chlorogenic acid (CQA) (10), cryptochlorogenic acid (crypto-CQA) (11), isochlorogenic acid B (3,4-DCQA) (12), isochlorogenic acid A (3,5-DCQA) (13), isochlorogenic acid C (4,5-DCQA) (14), and 3,4,5-tri-O-caffeoylquinic acid (TCQA) (15). Of these 15 compounds, compound 2 was a new oleanane saponin, the chemical structure of which was characterized by 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic data and high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HRESIMS), as well as chemical reaction. Biological evaluation of the isolated compounds revealed that 3,4,5-tri-O-caffeoylquinic acid (TCQA) significantly improved Nrf2 levels in an Nrf2–ARE reporter HaCaT cell screening assay. TCQA was found to potently inhibit the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway and to possess strong anti-wrinkle activity by modulating the MAPK/NF-κB/AP-1 signaling pathway and thus inhibiting MMP-1 synthesis in HaCaT cells exposed to UVB. Mori Folium (Morus alba leaf, MF) and Mori Cortex Radicis (Morus alba root cortex, MR) have been studied for their anti-obesity effects by enhancing the browning process and inhibiting adipogenesis. However, important aspects of their protective mechanisms have not been thoroughly investigated, which could aid in developing functional food. Thus, this study aims to determine the synergistic effects of MF and MR against obesity and its associated mechanisms. In an in vitro cell culture model of brown adipocytes, a 1:1 mixture of MF and MR showed a synergistic effect on the expression of brown adipocyte-specific genes, including Ucp-1, Ppargc1a, Cbp/p300-interacting transactivator (Cited), Prdm16, Tbx1, and Fgf21 compared with either MF- or MR-treated conditions. Moreover, they demonstrated the involvement of cAMP and Ca2+ in induction of brown adipocyte-specific genes. In an in vivo model using HFD-fed mice, MF/MR significantly inhibited weight gain, plasma cholesterol, LDL, TG content, fat mass, and adipocyte size. Furthermore, MF/MR inhibited morphological alteration and the expressions of fatty acid synthesis genes such as Srebp1 and Fasn in the white adipose tissue. Thermogenesis genes were recovered in the brown adipose tissue with MF/MR supplementation, indicating that MF/MR regulated adipocytic dysmetabolism where AMPK signaling is involved. In conclusion, these results suggested that MF/MR regulates brown and beige adipocyte processes, providing one of the preventive functional food/herbal medicines against obesity and its associated metabolic diseases. Direct methanation in an integrated CO2 capture and utilization system has recently gained considerable attention as a promising approach owing to its simplified process and lower requirement of total thermal energy as compared to conventional CO2 capture and utilization techniques. This study formulated macroporous structured Ni/CaO catal-sorbents by controlling the Ni-to-CaO ratio. The influence of this ratio on the CO2 capture (capacity and kinetics) and direct methanation performances (productivity and kinetics) was evaluated at 500 °C. CO2 capture combined with direct methanation experiments revealed that 10Ni/CaO exhibited the best CO2 capture capacity, kinetics, and CH4 productivity with the thermal stability of Ni and CaO species. Summary: Quantification of some important elements, including several heavy metals, and assessment of health risks associated with rice consumption was conducted. Twelve different rice varieties were analysed for fourteen metals i.e. As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se, Sr, U, and Zn using Inductively Coupled Plasma–Mass Spectrometry (ICP‐MS). In addition, arsenic species were separated and determined by High‐Performance Liquid Chromatography coupled with ICP‐MS. The As levels ranged from 24.16 to 178.66 μg kg−1, while Cd levels varied from 31.38 to 155.88 μg kg−1. The principal component analysis clearly differentiates traditional and non‐traditional varieties. The maximum Estimated Daily Intake (EDI) value, 120.56 μg kg−1 bw day−1, was reported for Zn from Kekulu Samba, while the highest Cancer Risk (CR) value, 1.17 × 10−02, was reported for Cd from red raw rice. The Madathawalu rice recorded the highest Target Hazard Quotient (THQ) value of 5.51. The EDI, CR, and THQ levels showed some health risks for some rice varieties. The most predominant species detected was As(III), followed by As(V), and the total inorganic As level ranged from 77.3 to 91.3%. Previously, it was shown that the {100}<0vw> texture could be evolved when the specimen is under the appropriate stress during γ → α phase transformation. Here the effect of the various process conditions on the evolution of the {100}<0vw> texture was examined. The texture evolution was affected by the magnitude of tensile stress, the furnace atmosphere, the heat treatment time (or grain size) and the cooling rate. In Fe–1 wt% Si, the {100}<0vw> texture was 78.3% under the H2 atmosphere with a flow rate of 1000 standard cubic centimeter per minute (sccm) whereas it was 16.2% under the N2 atmosphere with a flow rate of 1000 sccm. The marked decrease in the percentage of the {100}<0vw> texture under the N2 atmosphere is believed to be related with the surface oxidation of the specimen. In Fe–2 wt% Si–1 wt% Ni, the {100}< 0vw > texture was 8.9% when the specimen was heat treated at 1100 °C for 5 min whereas it increased to 66.0% when the specimen was heat treated for 6 h. This increase of the {100}<0vw> texture is believed to be related with the increase in the grain size. To understand the mechanisms underlying tooth morphogenesis, we examined the developmental roles of important posttranslational modification, O‐GlcNAcylation, which regulates protein stability and activity by the addition and removal of a single sugar (O‐GlcNAc) to the serine or threonine residue of the intracellular proteins. Tissue and developmental stage‐specific immunostaining results against O‐GlcNAc and O‐GlcNAc transferase (OGT) in developing tooth germs would suggest that O‐GlcNAcylation is involved in tooth morphogenesis, particularly in the cap and secretory stage. To evaluate the developmental function of OGT‐mediated O‐GlcNAcylation, we employed an in vitro tooth germ culture method at E14.5, cap stage before secretory stage, for 1 and 2 days, with or without OSMI‐1, a small molecule OGT inhibitor. To examine the mineralization levels and morphological changes, we performed renal capsule transplantation for one and three weeks after 2 days of in vitro culture at E14.5 with OSMI‐1 treatment. After OGT inhibition, morphological and molecular alterations were examined using histology, immunohistochemistry, real‐time quantitative polymerase chain reaction, in situ hybridization, scanning electron microscopy, and ground sectioning. Overall, inhibition of OGT resulted in altered cellular physiology, including proliferation, apoptosis, and epithelial rearrangements, with significant changes in the expression patterns of β‐catenin, fibroblast growth factor 4 (fgf4), and sonic hedgehog (Shh). Moreover, renal capsule transplantation and immunolocalizations of Amelogenin and Nestin results revealed that OGT‐inhibited tooth germs at cap stage exhibited with structural changes in cuspal morphogenesis, amelogenesis, and dentinogenesis of the mineralized tooth. Overall, we suggest that OGT‐mediated O‐GlcNAcylation regulates cell signaling and physiology in primary enamel knot during tooth development, thus playing an important role in mouse molar morphogenesis. Background: Patients experience considerable postoperative pain after spinal surgery. As the spine is located at the centre of the body and supports body weight, severe postoperative pain hinders upper body elevation and gait which can lead to various complications, including pulmonary deterioration and pressure sores. It is important to effectively control postoperative pain to prevent such complications. Gabapentinoids are widely used as preemptive multimodal analgesia, but their effects and side effects are dose-dependent. This study was designed to examine the efficacy and side effects of varying doses of postoperative pregabalin for the treatment of postoperative pain after spinal surgery. Methods: This is a prospective, randomized controlled, double-blind study. A total of 132 participants will be randomly assigned to the placebo (n = 33) group or to the pregabalin 25 mg (n = 33), 50 mg (n = 33), or 75 mg (n = 33) groups. Each participant will be administered placebo or pregabalin once prior to surgery and every 12 h after surgery for 72 h. The primary outcome will be the visual analogue scale pain score, total dose of administered intravenous patient-controlled analgesia, and frequency of rescue analgesic administered for 72 h from arrival to the general ward after surgery, subdivided into four periods: 1–6 h, 6–24 h, 24–48 h, and 48–72 h. The secondary outcomes will be the incidence and frequency of nausea and vomiting due to intravenous patient-controlled analgesia. Safety will be assessed by monitoring the occurrence of side effects such as sedation, dizziness, headache, visual disturbance, and swelling. Discussion: Pregabalin is already widely used as preemptive analgesia and, unlike nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, is not associated with a risk of nonunion after spinal surgery. A recent meta-analysis demonstrated the analgesic efficacy and opioid-sparing effect of gabapentinoids with significantly decreased risks of nausea, vomiting, and pruritus. Activating brown adipose tissue (BAT) and stimulating white adipose tissue (WAT) browning is a prospective obesity treatment method. Dietary components derived from plants are the most effective approach to activate BAT and promote WAT browning in rodents. This study investigated the synergistic effects of Panax ginseng (PG) and Diospyros kaki leaf (DKL) extract on adipocyte differentiation and browning, as well as the molecular mechanism underlying their beneficial effects. The administration of PG and DKL to HFD-induced obese mice significantly decreased body weight and epididymal and abdominal adipose tissue mass. In in vitro, PG inhibited the adipogenesis of 3T3-L1 adipocytes by regulating the expression of key adipogenic regulators, such as peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)γ and CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein (C/EBP)-α. In contrast, DKL negligibly influenced the adipogenesis of 3T3-L1 adipocytes but greatly increased the protein expression of UCP-1, PGC-1α, and PPARα in BAT and/or WAT. Moreover, PG and DKL inhibited adipogenesis synergistically and activated white adipocyte browning via AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) pathways. These results suggest that a combination of PG and DKL regulates adipogenesis in white adipocytes and browning in brown adipocytes by activating AMPK/SIRT1 axis. Breathable films were prepared based on linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), calcium carbonate (CaCO3), and aluminum (Al; 0, 2, 4, and 8 wt.%) using extrusion molding at a pilot scale. These films must generally be able to transmit moist vapor through pores (breathability) while maintaining a barrier to liquids; this was accomplished using properly formulated composites containing spherical CaCO3 fillers. The presence of LLDPE and CaCO3 was confirmed by X-ray diffraction characterization. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy results revealed the formation of Al/LLDPE/CaCO3 composite films. The melting and crystallization behaviors of the Al/LLDPE/CaCO3 composite films were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry. Thermogravimetric analysis results show that the prepared composites exhibited high thermal stability up to 350 °C. Moreover, the results demonstrate that surface morphology and breathability were both influenced by the presence of various Al contents, and their mechanical properties improved with increasing Al concentration. In addition, the results show that the thermal insulation capacity of the films increased after the addition of Al. The composite with 8 wt.% Al showed the highest thermal insulation capacity (34.6%), indicating a new approach to transform composite films into novel advanced materials for use in the fields of wooden house wrapping, electronics, and packaging. Background: This study aimed to analyze the differences in the stability of fractures, stress distribution around the distal-most screw according to the length of the plate and the trajectory of the bolt in Pauwels type III femoral neck fracture using the femoral neck system (FNS). Methods: Finite element models of Pauwels type III femoral neck fractures were established with surgical variations in the trajectory of the bolt (central, inferior, valgus, and varus) and length of the lateral plate (1- and 2-hole plate). The models were subsequently subjected to normal walking and stair-climbing loads. Results: The screw-holding cortical bone in subtrochanter in the model with a 2-hole plate and the bolt in the inferior trajectory and the models with 1-hole or 2-hole plate and the bolt in valgus trajectory had shown greater maximum principal strain than the models with central or varus trajectories. The gap and sliding distance on the fracture surface were larger with inferior or varus trajectories of the bolt and smaller with the valgus trajectory of the bolt under both loads, compared to those of the central trajectory. Conclusion: For the fixation of Pauwels type III femoral neck fracture, the trajectory of the FNS bolt and the length of the plate affect the mechanical stability of the fracture and the strain of cortical bone around the distal-most screw. In this study, a Ru-doped Ni pellet-type catalyst was prepared to produce hydrogen via steam methane reforming (SMR). A small amount of Ru addition on the Ni catalyst improved Ni dispersion, thus affording a higher catalytic activity than that of the Ni catalyst. During the daily startup and shutdown (DSS) operations, the CH4 conversion of Ni catalysts significantly decreased because of Ni metal oxidation to NiAl2O4, which is not reduced completely at 700 °C. Conversely, the oxidized Ni species in the Ru–Ni catalyst can be reduced under SMR conditions because of H2 spillover from the surface of Ru onto the surface of Ni. Background: The purpose of the Korean Hip Fracture Registry (KHFR) Study is to establish a nationwide, hospital-based prospective cohort study of adults with hip fracture to explore the incidence and risk factors of second osteoporotic fractures for a Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) model. Methods: The KHFR, a prospective multicenter longitudinal study, was launched in 2014. Sixteen centers recruited participants who were treated for hip fracture. The inclusion criteria were patients, who were treated for proximal femur fracture due to low-energy trauma and aged 50 or more at the time of injury. Until 2018, 5,841 patients were enrolled in this study. Follow-up surveys were conducted annually to determine occurrence of second osteoporotic fracture, and 4,803 participants completed at least one follow-up survey. Discussion: KHFR is a unique resource of individual level on osteoporotic hip fracture with radiological, medical, and laboratory information including DXA (dual energy x-ray absorptiometry), bone turnover marker, body composition, and hand grip strength for future analyses for FLS model. Modifiable factors for mortality after hip surgery is planned to be identified with nutritional assessment and multi-disciplinary interventions from hospitalization to follow-ups. The proportions of femoral neck, intertrochanteric, and subtrochanteric fractures were 517 (42.0%), 730 (53.6%), and 60 (4.4%), respectively, from 2014 to 2016, which was similar in other studies. Radiologic definition of atypical subtrochanteric fracture was adopted and 17 (1.2%) fractures among 1,361 proximal femoral fractures were identified. Internal fixation showed higher reoperation rate compared to arthroplasty in unstable intertrochanteric fractures (6.1% vs. 2.4%, p = 0.046) with no significant difference in mortality. The KHFR plans to identify outcomes and risk factors associated with second fracture by conducting a 10-year cohort study, with a follow-up every year, using 5,841 baseline participants. Mechanically activated factors are important in organogenesis, especially in the formation of secretory organs, such as salivary glands. Piezo-type mechanosensitive ion channel component 1 (Piezo1), although previously studied as a physical modulator of the mechanotransduction, was firstly evaluated on its developmental function in this study. The detailed localization and expression pattern of Piezo1 during mouse submandibular gland (SMG) development were analyzed using immunohistochemistry and RT-qPCR, respectively. The specific expression pattern of Piezo1 was examined in acinar-forming epithelial cells at embryonic day 14 (E14) and E16, which are important developmental stages for acinar cell differentiation. To understand the precise function of Piezo1 in SMG development, siRNA against Piezo1 (siPiezo1) was employed as a loss-of-function approach, during in vitro organ cultivation of SMG at E14 for the designated period. Alterations in the histomorphology and expression patterns of related signaling molecules, including Bmp2, Fgf4, Fgf10, Gli1, Gli3, Ptch1, Shh, and Tgfβ-3, were examined in acinar-forming cells after 1 and 2 days of cultivation. Particularly, altered localization patterns of differentiation-related signaling molecules including Aquaporin5, E-cadherin, Vimentin, and cytokeratins would suggest that Piezo1 modulates the early differentiation of acinar cells in SMGs by modulating the Shh signaling pathway. A series of 1,4‐bis(N‐alkylpyrrolidinium)butane salts combined with Br−, I−, PF6−, and Tf2N− anions were newly designed and synthesized. In nonpolar CDCl3 solution, the axial and equatorial proton peaks of the bis‐pyrrolidinium cation ring are distinguished in 1H NMR. Also, the strengths of ion paring could be estimated from the 1H NMR chemical shift changes of the bridge and pyrrolidinium proton peaks. 1,4‐Bis(N‐hepthylpyrrolidinium)butane I− is an organic ionic plastic crystal showing the lowest fusion entropy value (ΔSf = 3.4 J K·mol−1). Softer crystalline morphologies were found by polarized optical microscope images at plastic crystal phase of each sample and the results were corresponding to differential scanning calorimetry results. 1,4‐Bis(N‐ethylpyrrolidinium)butane Tf2N− showed the softest crystal phase. Ionic conductivity changes and electrochemical stabilities of the bis‐pyrrolidinium PF6− and Tf2N− salts were also measured, and they were stable up to 4.3 V (vs. Li/Li+) and expected to be applied as an electrolyte component. Nymphoides peltata is widely used pharmacologically in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic medicine as a diuretic, antipyretic, or choleretic and to treat ulcers, snakebites, and edema. Previous studies have shown that phytochemicals from N. peltata have physiological activities such as anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, and anti-wrinkle properties. Nevertheless, research on the anti-atopic dermatitis (AD) effect of N. peltata extract is limited. This study was undertaken to assess the in vitro and in vivo anti-atopic and antioxidant activities of a 95% EtOH extract of N. peltata roots (NPR). PI-induced RBL-2H3 cells and two typical hapten mice (oxazolone-induced BALB/c mice and 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB)-induced SKH-1 hairless mice) were used to investigate the effect of NPR extract on AD. The expressions of AD-related inflammatory cytokines, skin-related genes, and antioxidant enzymes were analyzed by ELISA, immunoblotting, and immunofluorescence, and skin hydration was measured using Aquaflux AF103 and SKIN-O-MAT instruments. The chemical composition of NPR extract was analyzed using an HPLC-PDA system. In this study, NPR extracts were shown to most efficiently inhibit IL-4 in PI-induced RBL-2H3 cells and AD-like skin symptoms in oxazolone-BALB/c mice compared to its whole and aerial extracts. NPR extract markedly reduced DNCB-induced increases in mast cells, epidermal thickness, IL-4 and IgE expressions, and atopic-like symptoms in SKH-1 hairless mice. In addition, NPR extract suppressed DNCB-induced changes in the expressions of skin-related genes and skin hydration and activated the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway. Three phenolic acids (chlorogenic acid, 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid, and 3,4-dicaffeoylquinic acid) were identified by HPLC-PDA in NPR extract. The study shows that NPR extract exhibits anti-atopic activities by inhibiting inflammatory and oxidative stress and improving skin barrier functions, and indicates that NPR extract has potential therapeutic use for the prevention and treatment of AD. Energy and power demands for military operations continue to rise as autonomous air, land, and sea platforms are developed and deployed with increasingly energetic weapon systems. The primary limiting capability hindering full integration of such systems is the need to effectively and efficiently manage, generate, and transmit energy across the battlefield. Energy efficiency is primarily dictated by the number of dissimilar energy conversion processes in the system. After combustion, a Compression Ignition (CI) engine must periodically continue to inject fuel to produce mechanical energy, simultaneously generating thermal, acoustic, and fluid energy (in the form of unburnt hydrocarbons, engine coolant, and engine oil). Background: The tongue is a muscular fleshy organ in the oral cavity that is anatomically divided into the dorsal, ventral, anterior, and posterior part. The intricate tissue organisation and diverse origins of the tongue make it a complex organ of the oral cavity. Objectives: To reveal the signalling molecules involved in the formation of the dorsal and ventral parts of the tongue through microarray analysis. Methods: Dorsal and ventral tongue tissues were isolated from embryonic day 14 mice by micro-dissection. RNA was extracted from the dorsal and ventral tongue tissues separately for microarray analysis. Microarray data were confirmed by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and whole-mount in situ hybridisation. Results: Microarray analysis revealed expression of 33,793 genes. Of these, 931 genes were found to be equally expressed in both the dorsal and ventral parts of the tongue. On limiting the fold-change cut-off to over 1.5-fold, 725 genes were expressed over 1.5-fold in the ventral part and 1,672 in the dorsal part of the tongue. The qPCR and whole-mount in situ hybridisation revealed the expressions of angiopoietin 2 (Angpt2), fibroblast growth factor 18 (Fgf18), mesenchyme homeobox gene1 (Meox1), and SPARC-related modular calcium binding 2 (Smoc2) in the ventral part of the tongue. Conclusions: Numerous signalling molecules can be selected from our microarray results to examine their roles in tongue development and disease model systems. In this study, a solvometallurgical process for the recovery of Cu from industrial dust by leaching with a lixiviant comprising hydrochloric acid (HCl) and ethylene glycol followed by extraction with trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) was developed. Copper, Ni, Mg, and Al contained in the dust were efficiently dissolved by using HCl in ethylene glycol, leaving most of the Ag in the residue. The parameters (concentration of the lixivant, reaction temperature, pulp density) that affect leaching efficiency were extensively investigated and optimized. TOPO was used to selectively extract Cu over other metal ions (Ni, Mg, Al, and Ag) from the obtained leachate. The Cu extraction mechanism was investigated by using the slope method, and 0.1 mol/L sulfuric acid was used to strip Cu from the Cu-loaded TOPO. McCabe–Thiele plots for Cu extraction and stripping were constructed to determine the number of counter-current stages along with the volumetric flow ratio of the two phases. Counter-current Cu extraction and stripping simulation tests were carried out to confirm its feasibility. As incidences of osteoporotic hip fractures (OHFs) have increased, identifying OHFs has become important to establishing the medical guidelines for their management. This study was conducted to develop an operational definition to identify patients with OHFs using two diagnosis codes and eight procedure codes from health insurance claims data and to assess the operational definition's validity through a chart review. The study extracted data on OHFs from 522 patients who underwent hip surgeries based on diagnosis codes. Orthopedic surgeons then reviewed these patients' medical records and radiographs to identify those with true OHFs. The validities of nine different algorithms of operational definitions, developed using a combination of three levels of diagnosis codes and eight procedure codes, were assessed using various statistics. The developed operational definition showed an accuracy above 0.97 and an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve above 0.97, indicating excellent discriminative power. This study demonstrated that the operational definition that combines diagnosis and procedure codes shows a high validity in detecting OHFs and can be used as a valid tool to detect OHFs from big health claims data. To improve the performance of a meso-scale thermophotovoltaic (TPV) power device, the internal heat recirculation using porous media (PM) is applied to a TPV combustor with external heat recovery and multiple injectors, which was developed in the previous study of this laboratory. The combustion performance of the PM-inserted combustor is evaluated, and then the TPV performance is demonstrated for practical applications, using the meso-scale TPV device that consists of the PM combustor with various emitters, a module of 96 gallium antimonide cells and a cooling device and was not considered in the previous study. The present TPV device adopting a MgO emitter could be used in meso-scale power generation systems, particularly for military applications, if the device size and weight and the noise level are considered along with the TPV performance (i.e., the maximum output power of 18.9 W) that is evaluated to be suitable for the meso-scale power device. 7-O-methylluteolin (7-ML) is a flavonoid isolated from the aerial parts of Wikstroemia ganpi (W. ganpi). We describe the anti–atopic dermatitis (AD) effects of 7-ML in tert-butyl hydroperoxide (tBHP)-induced HepG2 cells and 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB)-induced SKH-1 hairless mice. Results demonstrated that 7-ML dose-dependently inhibited the activation of Nrf2 (nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2) in tBHP-induced HepG2 cells. 7-ML applied topically to our DNCB-induced mouse model upregulated the antioxidant protein expression (phosphorylated Nrf2 (pNrf2), Nrf2, and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1)) in skin tissues, improved epidermal thickness, and reduced mast cell infiltration into the skin. In addition, 7-ML reduced the serum levels of immunoglobulin E (IgE) and interleukin-4 (IL-4) and improved skin barrier functions. This study provides a new leaching method for selective recovery of manganese from the spent NCM-based cathode active material of lithium-ion secondary batteries (LIBs). The recovery method involves the use of aqueous Mn(II) phase spontaneously generated in sulfate media as a reducing agent, in which Ni(III) and Co(III) are reduced to soluble species while Mn(II) precipitates as Mn(IV) oxides simultaneously. To optimize the process, the effects of time, temperature, and acid concentration on the leaching behavior were investigated. As a result, two-step successive leaching at an optimal condition was proposed, by which the dissolution efficiency of Co and Ni reached up to 99% and ~100%, respectively while Mn leaching was restricted to 15.5%. The leaching residue mainly consisted of manganese oxide (MnO2), containing Mn ~40%. The amount of Mn in the residue increased to ~70% by calcinating at 650 °C, which converted its phase into Mn2O3 and Mn3O4. Therefore, our two-step leaching technique will lead to the recovery of nearly all the contents of Li, Co, and Ni in addition to ~70% purity Mn as supplemental benefit from spent LIB materials without using any oxidants or reductants. For hard tissue formation, cellular mechanisms, involved in protein folding, processing, and secretion play important roles in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). In pathological and regeneration conditions, ER stress hinders proper formation and secretion of proteins, and tissue regeneration by unfolded protein synthesis. 4-Phenylbutyric acid (4PBA) is a chemical chaperone that alleviates ER stress through modulation in proteins folding and protein trafficking. However, previous studies about 4PBA only focused on the metabolic diseases rather than on hard tissue formation and regeneration. Herein, we evaluated the function of 4PBA in dentin regeneration using an exposed pulp animal model system via a local delivery method as a drug repositioning strategy. Our results showed altered morphological changes and cellular physiology with histology and immunohistochemistry. The 4PBA treatment modulated the inflammation reaction and resolved ER stress in the early stage of pulp exposure. In addition, 4PBA treatment activated blood vessel formation and TGF-β1 expression in the dentin-pulp complex. Micro-computed tomography and histological examinations confirmed the facilitated formation of the dentin bridge in the 4PBA-treated specimens. This paper presents the design optimization of a heat exchanger for a free-piston Stirling engine (FPSE) through an improved quasi-steady flow (iQSF) model and a central composite design. To optimize the tubular hot heat exchanger (HHX) design, a design set of central composite designs for the design factors of the HHX was constructed and the brake power and efficiency were predicted through the iQSF model. The iQSF model is improved because it adds various heat and power losses based on the QSF model and applies a heat transfer model that simulates the oscillating flow condition of an actual Stirling engine. Based on experimental results from the RE-1000, an FPSE developed by Sunpower, the iQSF model significantly improves the prediction error of the indicated power from 66.9 to 24.9% compared to the existing QSF model. For design optimization of the HHX, the inner diameter and the number of tubes with the highest brake power and efficiency were determined using a regression model, and the tube length was determined using the iQSF model. Finally, the brake output and efficiency of FPSE with the optimized HHX were predicted to be 7.4 kW and 36.4%, respectively, through the iQSF analysis results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Navigation of nanoparticles to target sites of blood flow disturbance markedly upgrades the diagnostic paradigm in vascular medicine. The theranostic treatment of pre‐stenotic vessels can prevent the irreversible occlusion process effectively. Here, these nanotheranostic functions are established by displaying CDK9(cyclin‐dependent kinase 9)‐targeting peptide (P.) onto nanovesicles (NV) and liposomes using the navigation function and subsequent binding‐on signaling of P. as a game‐changer. When rabbit vessels are allografted with injecting contrast‐loaded P. liposomes, the case‐dependent stenotic degree after 2–6 weeks can be diagnosed accurately within 2–4 days via computed tomography imaging with cross‐validation in a mouse model of partial carotid ligation. Furthermore, the anti‐CDK9 signaling of P. NV is activated post‐targeting and effectively prevents vascular stenosis by suppressing inflammation and lipotoxicity in the vessels, serum, and/or liver. MgO-based sorbents were prepared by impregnation with K2CO3 at different loadings. This study examined the CO2 absorption and regeneration properties of MgO-based sorbents at various pressures. The CO2 capture capacity of the PMI-30 sorbent increased to 204.4 mg CO2/g sorbent with increasing absorption pressure through CO2 absorption by MgO itself and K2CO3 by generating structures, such as MgCO3·3H2O and K2Mg(CO3)2. However, no KHCO3 phase was observed after CO2 absorption at 1, 10, and 20 atm. The CO2 capture capacity of the MgO and PMI-10, 20, 30, and 40 sorbents was the 94.6, 129.9, 156.6, 204.4, and 239.4 mg CO2/g sorbent, respectively. The CO2 capture capacity of MgO in the PMI sorbent was relatively constant regardless of the decreasing MgO content and increasing K2CO3 content. The CO2 absorption ability of MgO was calculated by substracting theoretical CO2 capture capacity of K2CO3 from the total capacity of sorbents. The TPD experiment performed at 1 atm after CO2 absorption at 20 atm showed that the regeneration temperature of the PMI sorbents differed according to the K2CO3 loading. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, the CO2 sorption mechanisms and regeneration properties of alumina-based sorbent using K2CO3 loading under high-pressure and moderate temperature conditions were examined. To investigate the mechanism of CO2 sorption, a zirconium-based sorbent was compared with an alumina-based sorbent. The CO2 capture capacities of the PAI10, 20, 30, and 40 were 32.3, 63.0, 95.4, and 124.5 mg CO2/g sorbent, respectively. To investigate the CO2 sorption mechanism of an alumina-based sorbent, we performed XRD, TG/DTG, and FTIR analyses after CO2 sorption in the presence of 10 vol% CO2 and H2O each at 200 °C and 20 atm. For PAI10–40 sorbents, KHCO3 and KAl(CO3)(OH)2 phases were observed by TG/DTG and FTIR analysis. For PAI-x sorbents, it was confirmed that the captured CO2 is desorbed completely at a temperature below 400 °C at 20 atm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
