Pollinators benefit from increasing floral resources in agricultural landscapes, which could be an underexplored co‐benefit of mass‐flowering crop cultivation. However, the impacts of mass‐flowering crops on pollinator communities are complex and appear to be context‐dependent, mediated by factors such as crop flowering time and the availability of other flower resources in the landscape. A synthesis of research is needed to develop management recommendations for effective pollinator conservation in agroecosystems.By combining 22 datasets from 13 publications conducted in nine temperate countries (20 European, 2 North American), we investigated if mass‐flowering crop flowering time (early or late season), bloom state (during or after crop flowering) and extent of non‐crop habitat cover in the landscape moderated the effect of mass‐flowering crop cover on wild pollinator abundance and species richness in mass‐flowering crop and non‐crop habitats.During bloom, wild bee abundance and richness are negatively related to mass‐flowering crop cover. Dilution effects were predominant in crop habitats and early in the season, except for bumblebees, which declined with mass‐flowering crop cover irrespective of habitat or season. Late in the season and in non‐crop habitats, several of these negative relationships were either absent or reversed. Late‐season mass‐flowering crop cover is positively related to honeybee abundance in crop habitats and to other bee abundance in non‐crop habitats. These results indicate that crop‐adapted species, like honeybees, move to forage and concentrate on late‐season mass‐flowering crops at a time when flower availability in the landscape is limited, potentially alleviating competition for flower resources in non‐crop habitats. We found no evidence of pollinators moving from mass‐flowering crop to non‐crop habitats after crop bloom.Synthesis and applications: Our results confirm that increasing early‐season mass‐flowering crop cover dilutes wild pollinators in crop habitats during bloom. We find that dilution effects were absent late in the season. While mass‐flowering crop cultivation alone is unlikely to be sufficient for maintaining pollinators, as part of carefully designed diverse crop rotations or mixtures combined with the preservation of permanent non‐crop habitats, it might provide valuable supplementary food resources for pollinators in temperate agroecosystems, particularly later in the season when alternative flower resources are scarce. Background: Refractory angina is a growing and major health-care problem affecting millions of patients with coronary artery disease worldwide. The Coronary Sinus Reducer (CSR) is a device that may be considered for the relief of symptoms of refractory angina. It causes increased venous pressure leading to a dilatation of arterioles and reduced arterial vascular resistance in the sub-endocardium. This study describes the 5‑year Dutch experience regarding safety and efficacy of the CSR. Methods: One hundred and thirty-two patients with refractory angina were treated with the CSR. The primary efficacy endpoint of the study was Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS) class improvement between baseline and 6‑month follow-up. The primary safety endpoint was successful CSR implantation in the absence of any device-related events. Results: Eighty-five patients (67%) showed improvement of at least 1 CCS class and 43 patients (34%) of at least 2 classes. Mean CCS class improved from 3.17 ± 0.61 to 2.12 ± 1.07 after implantation (P < 0.001). The CSR was successfully implanted in 99% of the patients and only minor complications during implantation were reported. Conclusion: The CSR is a simple, safe, and effective option for most patients with refractory angina. However, approximately thirty percent of the patients showed no benefit after implantation. Future studies should focus on the exact underlying mechanisms of action and reasons for non-response to better identify patients that could benefit most from this therapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soil organic matter (SOM) is declining in most agricultural ecosystems, impacting multiple ecosystem services including erosion and flood prevention, climate and greenhouse gas regulation as well as other services that underpin crop production, such as nutrient cycling and pest control. Ecological intensification aims to enhance crop productivity by including regulating and supporting ecosystem service management into agricultural practices. We investigate the potential for increased SOM to support the ecological intensification of arable systems by reducing the need for nitrogen fertiliser application and pest control. Using a large-scale European field trial implemented across 84 fields in 5 countries, we tested whether increased SOM (using soil organic carbon as a proxy) helps recover yield in the absence of conventional nitrogen fertiliser and whether this also supports crops less favourable to key aphid pests. Greater SOM increased yield by 10%, but did not offset nitrogen fertiliser application entirely, which improved yield by 30%. Crop pest responses depended on species: Metopolophium dirhodum were more abundant in fertilised plots with high crop biomass, and although population growth rates of Sitobion avenae were enhanced by nitrogen fertiliser application in a cage trial, field populations were not affected. We conclude that under increased SOM and reduced fertiliser application, pest pressure can be reduced, while partially compensating for yield deficits linked to fertiliser reduction. If the benefits of reduced fertiliser application and increased SOM are considered in a wider environmental context, then a yield cost may become acceptable. Background: Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are key players in innate immunity and are causally related to arterial occlusive disease and arterial remodelling. The release of proinflammatory cytokines following TLR ligand binding is increased in patients with unstable angina. Objective: To examine the effect of a percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) on TLR2 and TLR4 response and expression. Methods: In 70 PCI patients, blood samples were gathered after sheath insertion and 2 hours after the catheterisation. TLR2 and TLR4 expression on, and tumour necrosis factor c~ (TNFc~( levels in, monocytes were measured with flow cytometry. Whole blood was stimulated overnight with the TLR2 ligand Pam3Cys and the TLR4 ligand Iipopolysaccharide. TNFc~ was determined in the stimulated samples and considered to be a measure of the TLR response. Baseline TLR expression and response were studied in relation to angiographic luminal stenosis and fractional flow reserve (FFR) measurement. Results: A significant relation was found between TLR response and the angiographic percentage diameter stenosis, number of diseased vessels and FFR outcome. Furthermore, 2 hours after PCI a significant decrease in TLR2 and TLR4 response (p<0.OOl) and TLR2 and TLR4 expression (p = 0.001 and p = 0.068, respectively) was seen. Conclusion: TLR response is positively associated with percentage diameter stenosis, multivessel disease and FFR outcome. Systemic TLR2 and TLR4 response and expression decrease after PCI. These results suggests that the TLR signalling pathway encompasses a potential biomarker for myocardial ischaemia in stable coronary artery disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Agri-environment schemes are an increasingly important tool for the maintenance and restoration of farmland biodiversity in Europe but their ecological effects are poorly known. Scheme design is partly based on non-ecological considerations and poses important restrictions on evaluation studies. We describe a robust approach to evaluate agri-environment schemes and use it to evaluate the biodiversity effects of agri-environment schemes in five European countries. We compared species density of vascular plants, birds, bees, grasshoppers and crickets, and spiders on 202 paired fields, one with an agri-environment scheme, the other conventionally managed. In all countries, agri-environment schemes had marginal to moderately positive effects on biodiversity. However, uncommon species benefited in only two of five countries and species listed in Red Data Books rarely benefited from agri-environment schemes. Scheme objectives may need to differentiate between biodiversity of common species that can be enhanced with relatively simple modifications in farming practices and diversity or abundance of endangered species which require more elaborate conservation measures. In patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) who do not reach a (near) complete cytogenetic response, the disease progresses over several years from an indolent, chronic phase into a rapidly fatal blast crisis. Events that are responsible for this transformation process are largely unknown. To identify changes in gene expression that occurred during the course of the disease, we performed cDNA subtraction on sequentially stored peripheral blood mononuclear cell pellets, collected throughout the course of disease of a single CML patient. In total, 32 differentially expressed sequences were identified, of which 27 corresponded to known genes. On quantitative PCR, eight of these genes, YWHAZ, GAS2, IL8, IL6, PBEF1, CCL4, SAT and MMRN, showed comparable differential expression in additional CML patient samples. The family of Toll-like receptors (TLRs) initiates an innate immune response after recognition of pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs). Evidence is accumulating that TLRs, and particularly TLR4, are important players in the initiation and progression of atherosclerotic disease. Not only exogenous ligands but also endogenous ligands that are expressed during arterial injury are recognized by TLR4. Mouse knockout studies and epidemiological studies of human TLR4 polymorphisms have demonstrated that the TLR4 might play a role in the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis. This review will summarize the latest progression in research on the role of TLR4 in arterial occlusive disease In addition, the potential of intervention in TLR4 signalling to influence progression of atherosclerotic disease is discussed. Based on the amino acid sequence of the molt-inhibiting hormone of Carcinus maenas, two degenerated oligonucleotide primers were synthesized and used in the polymerase chain reaction. By use of complementary DNA of a library constructed from medulla terminalis-X-organ RNA of C. maenas as template, the specific complementary DNA between the primers was amplified, cloned and sequenced. This strategy revealed a DNA sequence for which the deduced amino acid sequence is identical to the recently published C. maenas molt-inhibiting hormone sequence as determined by Edman degradation. Visualization of messenger RNAs encoding molt-inhibiting hormone and crustacean hyperglycemic hormone in different perikarya of the X-organ was obtained using digoxigenin-labelled complementary RNA probes. Combination of immunocytochemical staining using polyclonal antisera against the native C. maenas neuropeptides and in situ hybridization performed on alternating sections confirmed the specificity of the reaction. The results show that there is no co-localization of molt-inhibiting hormone and crustacean hyperglycemic hormone at the messenger RNA and the protein level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
