This study was carried out to investigate the trends in the reproductive performance of Holstein dairy cows in Iranian commercial dairy herds. The potential effect of year, season, herd, the number of parturitions, and their interaction on reproductive performance traits were investigated on 200644 records obtained from six herds from 2007 to 2018. A nonlinearly increasing trend in calving interval (CI; 414±1.7 to 418±0.74 days) and days open (DO; 132±1.48 to 136±0.58 days) were observed. Services per conception (SPC) increased from 1.94 ± 0.03 to 2.59 ± 0.01 in dairy cows but altered in a fluctuating manner in heifers. The number of days from calving to first service (DFS) was decreased (P<0.05) from 79 ± 0.54 to 66 ± 0.24 days. The conception rate (CR) declined in dairy cows (67±0.68 to 58±0.31 ; P<0.05%), but no difference was observed in heifers (P>0.05). A decreasing trend was also recorded in age at first service (AFS) and age at the first calving (AFC) of heifers over time. Herd, season, and the number of parturitions had a significant effect on reproductive traits. Reproductive performance was higher during winter and spring compared to summer and autumn (P<0.05). Cows with a number of parturitions less than four had the highest reproductive performance (P<0.05). A similar trend is presented in fertility parameters of Holstein dairy cows showing a reduction in reproductive performance in Iranian dairy herds. Although the exact reason(s) beyond these changes are not clear, it may be due to the increment of metabolic and environmental stressors which in turn disturb the biology of reproductive system. Our results are in line with the global decline in fertility of dairy cows and emphasize on need for adopting more efficient strategies to improve reproduction status in Iranian dairy cows, especially during summer and after third parturition. Contents The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of butylated hydroxyanisole (0 or 4 mM) along with different concentrations (5 or 7%) of glycerol (G) and dimethyl sulphoxide ( DMSO) as cryoprotectant ( CPAs) on freezability of goat semen. Semen was collected from four bucks (3-4 years) twice a week for five weeks. The pooled ejaculates were diluted with extender containing two different concentrations of G or DMSO in combination with BHA. Afterwards, the diluted samples were loaded into 0.25 ml straws and frozen using a standard protocol. After thawing motility parameters, viability, membrane integrity and total abnormality were assessed. The Results showed that the presence of BHA in extender, type and level of CPAs as main factors had significant effects on goat sperm viability, total and progressive motility after freezing-thawing processes ( p < .05). Also, the interaction of BHA (0 and 4 mM) and levels of G or DMSO (5 or 7%) had a significant effects ( p < .05) on total motility, viability and some characteristic. In this case, the addition of 5% G or DMSO with BHA resulted in highest motility and viability than the other groups ( p < .05). The addition of G5 (with and without BHA) increased VSL and reduced abnormality than the other groups ( p < .05). The results showed that the main effects of CPAs and CPAs level on membrane functionality were significant ( p < .05). Also there were no significance differences in the interactive effects of MDA, VCL, VAP, ALH, LIN and STR among the groups ( p > .05). Finally, it can be concluded that the use of 5% CPAs with or without BHA may result in better post-thaw sperm quality of goat. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Published data on the effects of ruminal bolus on the number of ovulatory follicles in ewes does not exist. The present study determined the effects of a ruminal bolus on trace element status, follicular dynamics and reproductive performance in ewes. Eighty Afshari cycling ewes were synchronized during breeding season using CIDR for 14 days and assigned to 4 groups (n=20); group 1 received a single Ferrobloc bolus four weeks prior to CIDR insertion following 400 IU eCG on CIDR removal, group 2 received two boluses four weeks prior to CIDR insertion following 400 IU eCG on CIDR removal, group 3 received only 400 IU eCG on CIDR removal and group 4 (control) received no bolus and no eCG. Transrectal ultrasonography was done to monitor the ovarian follicles on the day of CIDR removal and a day later. Results showed that boluses increased the status of copper, selenium and iodine on mating day and days 90 to 100 of gestation. Ruminal bolus did not significantly increase the number of different classes of ovarian follicles in ewes fed a diet meeting all trace mineral requirements. All ewes eventually became pregnant with 1 or 2 boluses but the multiple births rate (80%) was higher (P<0.05) after 2 boluses compared to the other groups. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study was done to consider relationships of luteal phase variables (prior to AI) with follicular waves. The estrous cycles of 15 buffaloes were synchronized with 2 i.m. injections of prostaglandin F2αgiven 11 days apart. The buffaloes were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatments. Buffaloes in the control treatment received no treatment, whereas G6 buffalos received a GnRH injection between Day 5 and 7 and G16 buffalos received a GnRH injection between Day 15 and 17 of the estrous cycle (estrus = Day 0). Daily, from estrus Day 0 to the next estrus Day 23, buffaloes had their ovaries scanned by ultrasound. Blood samples were collected by tail following each ultrasound examination from estrus until next estrus (estrus = 0). Concentrations of plasma progesterone were determined by radioimmunoassay kit. The limit of detection of the assay was 0.1 45 ng mL-1and the intra- and interassay coeffients of variation were 7.4% and 9.2%, respectively. Data were analyzed by using PROC GLM of SAS (SAS Institute, Cary, NC, USA). For comparisons between groups, the 2-sample t-test was used for continuous traits, such as size of CL or hormone concentrations. Prospective comparisons of indices of progesterone indicated that the length of luteal lifespan was longer in 3-wave than in 2-wave buffaloes (P2 ng mL-1) was <2 days shorter in 2-wave buffaloes than in 3-wave buffaloes (15.20 ± 0.40 v. 17.10 ± 0.50 d; P< 0.05). In addition, the day of peak progesterone occurred earlier in 2-wave buffaloes (13.50 ± 0.30 v. 15.30 ± 0.70 d; P< 0.05). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
