Fusarium head blight continues to be a threat to spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production in the north‐central region of the United States. 'Lang‐MN' (Reg. no. CV‐1182, PI 687038) hard red spring wheat was released by the University of Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station in 2017 because it combines the best available Fusarium head blight resistance with high grain yield, grain protein concentration, and good end‐use quality characteristics. Lang‐MN is a mid‐late maturity cultivar that also has acceptable lodging resistance despite its above average plant height owing to its lack of the semi‐dwarfing genes Rht‐B1 or Rht‐D1 but presence of Rht24. Lang‐MN has good resistance to the prevalent races of leaf rust, stripe rust, and stem rust and is well adapted to the north‐central United States. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

'Flathead' (Reg. no. CV‐1164, PI 693237) hard red winter (HRW) wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was developed and released by the Montana Agricultural Experiment Station in 2019. Flathead was derived from a composite of two very closely related single crosses of the predominant cultivar 'Yellowstone' to stripe rust resistant source PI 640431, a hard white spring wheat backcross derivative of WA007900 that carries stripe rust all‐stage resistance genes Yr5 and Yr15. Flathead was developed using a modified bulk breeding method and selected as an F5:6 head row after phenotypic selection for stripe rust resistance at Kalispell, MT. Flathead was tested under the experimental number MT1564 in Montana yield trials from 2015 to 2019. Flathead is a high‐yielding HRW wheat cultivar with early maturity, short stature, medium grain protein concentration, excellent milling and baking quality, and a high level of all‐stage resistance to predominant races of stripe rust. Leaf rust, caused by the fungus Puccinia triticina Eriks., is a major disease nearly wherever wheat (Triticum spp.) is grown in the USA. Soft red winter wheat (T. aestivum L.) cultivars with varying degrees of leaf rust resistance are grown in the southern USA. The objective of this study was to characterize the seedling leaf rust resistance present in a group of 35 soft red winter wheat cultivars and 17 breeding lines. Leaf rust infection types (ITs) produced on the cultivars and lines by 16 P. triticina isolates were compared with the ITs produced on a standard set of 'Thatcher' near-isogenic lines that differed for single leaf rust resistance genes. Seedling resistance genes Lr1, Lr2a, Lr9, Lr10, Lr11, Lr18, and Lr26 were postulated to be present in the soft red winter wheat cultivars and lines. Adult plant leaf rust resistance for the cultivars and lines was assessed in field plots at two locations in North Carolina in 2000. Wheat cultivars postulated or genetically determined to have the adult plant resistance genes Lr12 and Lr34 had effective leaf rust resistance in the field plots. The soft red winter wheat cultivars and lines that had seedling resistance genes Lr2a, Lr9, and Lr26 combined with adult plant resistance were highly resistant to leaf rust. Cultivars and breeding lines that had seedling resistance genes Lr1, Lr10, Lr11, and Lr18 combined with adult plant resistance had moderate to low levels of leaf rust resistance.
