Flight behavior is an important component to understand in the context of pest management. However, because of their small size, little is known about the flight capacity of most stored-product insects, and when a flight has been assessed, it usually consists of a propensity for initiating flight. Despite a priori expectations of the importance of flight for moths, there are no data about the flight capacity and little on the flight behavior of the Mediterranean flour moth, Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). As a result, the objective of the current study was to (i) characterize the baseline flight capacity of E. kuehniella and (ii) determine how flight capacity is affected by the presence of kairomonal, pheromonal, or no stimuli. We found adult E. kuehniella flew a mean of 24–34 km in a 24-h period, and the distance flown per bout increased from 91 to 207 m in the presence of pheromones but decreased to 41 m when food was nearby compared to a negative control. The total number of flight bouts was 1.6-fold higher in the presence of pheromone compared to the negative control, but E. kuehniella flew significantly slower with pheromone and food cues present, suggesting they may be exhibiting an optimal foraging strategy. Our data on flight capacity results in qualitatively and quantitatively different conclusions about flight than those conclusions formed if only flight initiation is considered. Overall, this novel information is useful for understanding the spread within facilities and in the landscape (between facilities), as well as parameterizing ecological modeling. Background: While observational epidemiological studies have suggested an association between gut microbiota and Behçet’s disease (BD), the causal relationship between the two remains uncertain. Methods: Statistical data were obtained from gut microbiome GenomeWide Association Studies (GWAS) published by the MiBioGen consortium, and genetic variation points were screened as instrumental variables (IV). Mendelian randomization (MR) study was performed using inverse variance weighted (IVW), weighted median, MR-Egger regression, simple mode, and weighted mode methods to evaluate the causal relationship between gut microbiota (18,340 individuals) and BD (317,252 individuals). IVW was the main method of analysis. The stability and reliability of the results were verified using the leave-one-out method, heterogeneity test, and horizontal genetic pleiotropy test. Finally, a reverse MR analysis was performed to explore reverse causality. Results: Inverse variance weighted (IVW) results showed that the genus Parasutterella (OR  =  0.203, 95%CI 0.055–0.747, p  =  0.016), Lachnospiraceae NC2004 group (OR  =  0.101, 95%CI 0.015–0.666, p  =  0.017), Turicibacter (OR  =  0.043, 95%CI 0.007–0.273, p  =  0.001), and Erysipelatoclostridium (OR  =  0.194, 95%CI 0.040–0.926, p  =  0.040) were protective factors against BD, while Intestinibacter (OR  =  7.589, 95%CI 1.340–42.978, p  =  0.022) might be a risk factor for BD. Conclusion: Our study revealed the causal relationship between gut microbiota and BD. Nitrile-containing insecticides can be converted into their amide derivatives by Pseudaminobacter salicylatoxidans. N-(4-trifluoromethylnicotinoyl) glycinamide (TFNG-AM) is converted to 4-(trifluoromethyl) nicotinoyl glycine (TFNG) using nitrile hydratase/amidase. However, the amidase that catalyzes this bioconversion has not yet been fully elucidated. In this study, it was discovered that flonicamid (FLO) is degraded by P. salicylatoxidans into the acid metabolite TFNG via the intermediate TFNG-AM. A half-life of 18.7 h was observed for P. salicylatoxidans resting cells, which transformed 82.8% of the available FLO in 48 h. The resulting amide metabolite, TFNG-AM, was almost all converted to TFNG within 19 d. A novel amidase-encoding gene was cloned and overexpressed in Escherichia coli. The enzyme, PmsiA, hydrolyzed TFNG-AM to TFNG. Despite being categorized as a member of the amidase signature enzyme superfamily, PsmiA only shares 20–30% identity with the 14 previously identified members of this family, indicating that PsmiA represents a novel class of enzyme. Homology structural modeling and molecular docking analyses suggested that key residues Glu247 and Met242 may significantly impact the catalytic activity of PsmiA. This study contributes to our understanding of the biodegradation process of nitrile-containing insecticides and the relationship between the structure and function of metabolic enzymes. The incomplete absorption of dietary folate makes it crucial to understand how food matrices affect folate bioaccessibility. Bioavailability encompasses bioaccessibility, which depicts the proportion that is liberated from the food matrix during digestion and becomes available for absorption. Bioavailability studies are expensive and difficult to control, whereas bioaccessibility studies utilize in vitro digestionmodels to parameterize the complex digestion, allowing the evaluation of the effect of food matrices on bioaccessibility. This review covers the folate contents in various food matrices, the methods used to determine and the factors affecting folate bioaccessibility, and the advances and challenges in understanding how food matrices affect folate bioaccessibility. The methods for determining bioaccessibility have been improved in the last decade. Current research shows that food matrices modulate folate bioaccessibility by affecting the liberation and stability of folate during digestion but do not provide enough information about folate and food component interactions at the molecular level. In addition, information on folate interconversion and degradation during digestion is scant, hindering our understanding of the impact of food matrices on folate stability. Moreover, the role of conjugase inhibitors should not be neglected when evaluating the nutritional value of food folates. Due to the complexity of food digestion, holistic methods should be applied to investigate bioaccessibility. By synthesizing the current state of knowledge on this topic, this review highlights the lack of in-depth understanding of the mechanisms of how food matrices modulate folate bioaccessibility and provides insights into potential strategies for accurate evaluation of the nutritional value of dietary folate. BACKGROUND: Highly mobile stored product insects may be able to readily orient in response to food cues and pheromones to attack durable commodities at each link of the postharvest supply chain. A 0.4% deltamethrin‐incorporated long‐lasting insecticide‐incorporated netting (LLIN) is a successful novel preventative integrated pest management (IPM) tactic to intercept dispersing insects after harvest. However, it is unknown whether exposure to LLIN may affect olfaction and orientation to important semiochemicals by immature stored product dermestids, therefore the aim of this study was to assess whether exposure to LLIN disrupts the normal olfactory and chemotactic behavior of warehouse beetle, Trogoderma variabile Ballion (Coleoptera: Dermestidae), and the larger cabinet beetle, T. inclusum Le Conte (Coleoptera: Dermestidae), larval movement in the presence of important semiochemicals, including food kairomones (e.g., flour) and pheromones, e.g., (Z)‐14‐methyl‐8‐hexadecenal. RESULTS: The distance moved by the larval population of T. variabile was reduced by 64% after 24‐h exposure to LLIN compared to control netting but not immediately after exposure, while T. inclusum larvae movement was reduced by 50% after 24‐h exposure to LLIN compared to the control netting. Generally, the olfaction and orientation of larval dermestids were affected after exposure to LLIN compared to control netting. There were species‐linked differences in effects on olfaction after the insects were exposed to LLIN. CONCLUSION: Our study suggests the use of LLIN may enhance the effectiveness of other concurrent behaviorally‐based strategies such as mating disruption when used as part of a comprehensive IPM program in the postharvest environment. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry. Carbonized metallic organic frameworks (CMOF) have been attracting attention in microwave absorption (MA) research area because of their diverse structures, tunable compositions, and rich porosity. Herein, structure regulation on metal clusters in CMOF is achieved by tuning the interaction strength between metals and ligands to enhance microwave absorption performance. Due to relatively weak interaction among copper cations and ligands, copper nanoclusters (CuNC) can be uniformly formed and embedded within the cobalt/zinc (Co/Zn) CMOF. Firstly, copper cations are added to the Co/Zn bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs). Secondly, the CMOF composite particles with CuNCs (CuNCs/CoZn-CMOF) were developed by a pyrolysis process. The CuNCs/CoZn-CMOF with an appropriate amount of CuNCs can harmonize both dielectric and magnetic losses. As a result, the minimum reflection loss (RLmin) reaches −45.1 dB at a matching thickness of 2.30 mm and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) is 8.80 GHz at a thickness of 3.10 mm. The broadband response to electromagnetic waves is attributed to interfacial polarization at CuNCs surface and heterogeneous interfaces, impedance matching and multiple scattering of electromagnetic waves. The invasive larger grain borer (Prostephanus truncatus) and the maize weevil (Sitophilus zeamais) co-occur in many regions of the world. While competition between these 2 species has been studied extensively, there is little information on spatial dispersion patterns in bulk storage of grain. To evaluate potential overlap in realized niche, we evaluated the short-term spatial dispersion behavior of P. truncatus and S. zeamais in monolayers of maize alone or together for 1 day compared to 7 days. We evaluated competition under three different densities, namely 10–20, 75–150, and 150–300 insects/kg for P. truncatus and S. zeamais. The monolayers were equally divided into 24 zones to track location the abundance of insects and damage to maize. We found that both species generally aggregated together and were correlated to the same location as heterospecifics. After 1 day, most of the insects for both species were near the top of the monolayer, but by 7 days, most individuals were at the bottom of the monolayers. In monolayers, when alone, P. truncatus created a clear path of destruction to the bottom of the monolayer, but when S. zeamais was present, damage was lessened and shifted upwards in the grain column. In an olfactometer assay, P. truncatus preferred maize odors, while S. zeamais exhibited no preference among maize, conspecifics, and heterospecifics. In evaluating relative emissions, each of these treatments emitted unique odors but with significant overlap. The targeted identification of a-glucosidase inhibitors from the crude ethyl acetate of Lycopodiella cernua (L.) Pic. Serm (L.cernua) was guided by high-resolution inhibition profiling. The a-glucosidase inhibition profiling and HPLC-QTOF-MS showed tannins and serratenes were the corresponding antidiabetic constituents. Two new serratenes named 3β, 21β-dihydroxyserra-14-en-24-oic acid-3β-(4'-methoxy-5'-hydroxybenzoate) (4), 3β, 21α-dihydroxyserra-14-en-24-oic acid-3β-(4'-methoxy-5'-hydroxybenzoate) (7), together with two known compounds (5 and 6) were isolated. Their structures were elucidated by HR-ESI-MS and NMR. Compounds 5-7 inhibited the a-glucosidase activity in a non-competitive manner with Ki values ranging from 1.29 to 12.9 μM. The molecular docking result unveiled that 4-7 bound to the residues at the channel site, which enabled to block the substrate access. In addition, the molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of the most active compound 7 and a-glucosidase indicated the 40-methoxy-50-hydroxybenzoate group formed the stable hydrogen bonds and pi-pi T-shaped interactions with Arg312, Gln350 and Phe300 residues, while the rings D and E were stabilized by hydrophobic interaction. A two-year field trial was conducted to investigate the effects of partial substitution of chemical fertilizer (CF) by Trichoderma biofertilizer (TF) on nitrogen (N) use efficiency and associated mechanisms in wolfberry (Lycium chinense) in coastal saline land. As with plant biomass and fruit yield, apparent N use efficiency and plant N accumulation were also higher with TF plus 75% CF than 100% CF, indicating that TF substitution promoted plant growth and N uptake. As a reason, TF substitution stabilized soil N supply by mitigating steep deceases in soil NH4+-N and NO3-N concentrations in the second half of growing seasons. TF substitution also increased carbon (C) fixation according to higher photosynthetic rate (Pn) and stable 13C abundance with TF plus 75% CF than 100% CF. Importantly, leaf N accumulation significantly and positively related with Pn, biomass, and fruit yield, and structural equation modeling also confirmed the importance of the causal relation of N accumulation coupled with C fixation for biomass and yield formation. Consequently, physiological and agronomical N use efficiencies were significantly higher with TF plus 75% CF than 100% CF. Overall, partial substitution of CF by TF improved N use efficiency in wolfberry in coastal saline land by stabilizing soil N supply and coupling N accumulation with C fixation. This study aimed to investigate the impact of soil liquefaction‐induced displacement on buried pipelines critical to the serviceability of buildings, including those for potable water and natural gas. The emphasis was on the service lines connecting distribution mains and buildings due to their higher vulnerability. Two types of forced displacement tests were conducted on full‐scale physical models of buried service lines. One simulated the uplift or subsidence of distribution mains as the soil surrounding the pipelines is completely liquefied, while the other simulated the building settlement due to partial loss of foundation bearing capacity in various conditions of surrounding soil. The longitudinal strains, deflection, and possible leakage of pipelines were monitored during these tests. The results showed that sufficiently large displacement could cause yielding and pulling out from the joint of the pipe. However, high pipe flexibility and joint strength provided adequate resilience of buried pipelines to these damage modes. The corrugated section of stainless‐steel pipe was also verified to reduce strain in the pipeline. Additionally, when a pipeline was subjected to building settlement, liquefaction of surrounding soil or not led to different strain distribution and deflection along the pipeline. Local buckling of the pipe near the loaded end was induced in non‐liquefied cases due to the combination of forced displacement and soil reaction. Background: Disordered gut microbiota (GM) structure and function may contribute to osteoporosis (OP). This study explores how traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) intervention affects the structure and function of the GM in patients with OP. Method: In a 3-month clinical study, 43 patients were randomly divided into two groups receiving conventional treatment and combined TCM (Yigu decoction, YGD) treatment. The correlation between the intestinal flora and its metabolites was analyzed using 16S rDNA and untargeted metabolomics and the combination of the two. Results: After three months of treatment, patients in the treatment group had better bone mineral density (BMD) than those in the control group (P < 0.05). Patients in the treatment group had obvious abundance changes in GM microbes, such as Bacteroides, Escherichia-Shigella, Faecalibacterium, Megamonas, Blautia, Klebsiella, Romboutsia, Akkermansia, and Prevotella_9. The functional changes observed in the GM mainly involved changes in metabolic function, genetic information processing and cellular processes. The metabolites for which major changes were observed were capsazepine, Phe-Tyr, dichlorprop, D-pyroglutamic acid and tamsulosin. These metabolites may act through metabolic pathways, the citrate cycle (TCA cycle) and beta alanine metabolism. Combined analysis showed that the main acting metabolites were dichlorprop, capsazepine, D-pyroglutamic acid and tamsulosin. Conclusion: This study showed that TCM influenced the structure and function of the GM in patients with OP, which may be one mechanism by which TCM promotes the rehabilitation of patients with OP through the GM. Herein, high‐efficiency microwave shielding networks are constructed in multi‐walled carbon nanotube/poly(ε‐caprolactone) (CNT/PCL) composites by adding carbon black (CB) or graphene nano‐plates (GNPs). The synergistic effect of carbonaceous fillers with different rdimensions is investigated to obtain the optimal electromagnetic shielding performance of the composites. The CNT/GNP/PCL, CNT/CB/PCL and CB/GNP/PCL composites with different ratios were prepared by melt mixing and hot press molding for the microwave shielding evaluation. Because of the synergistic effect, the microwave shielding effectiveness values of 53.8 and 54.6 dB, which are achieved in the CNT9/CB1/PCL (CNT:CB = 9:1) and CNT9/GNP1/PCL (CNT:GNP = 9:1) composites, respectively, are higher than the value of 46.4 dB for the CNT/PCL composites with the same filler content of 4.12 vol%. Two insecticides (deltamethrin and pirimiphos-methyl) were evaluated in laboratory assays as grain protectants when applied as a total percentage of a maize mass to control adult Prostephanus truncatus and Sitophilus zeamais. All experiments were conducted at the University of Thessaly in Greece at 30°C and 65% RH under continuous darkness. Either insecticide was applied to 20 g of maize placed in a vial or to the upper one half, one fourth, or one-eighth layer of the maize, then insects were either added to the vials before or after the maize in a completely randomized block design CRBD with n = 9 replicates. Mortality, progeny production, and insect damaged kernels (IDK) were then evaluated for each vial. Insect introduction method (before or after) did not have any impact on any of the variables. Mortality was nearly 100% for all treatments for both insecticides for P. truncatus. Subsequently, progeny production and the number of insect damaged kernels were very low or zero for P. truncatus. Mortality of S. zeamais remained low across layer treatments for deltamethrin. However, S. zeamais was easily controlled by pirimiphos-methyl. The results of this laboratory study show that while deltamethrin and pirimiphos-methyl have some effectiveness as a layer treatment on a column of maize, efficacy will be dependent on the target species, and the depth of the treated layer, as well as the location on which the insects are present. Herein, non-woven cotton fabrics (NWCFs) with excellent microwave shielding, Joule heating and self-cleaning performance were achieved by modifying NWCFs with dopamine, then depositing a thin copper (Cu) layer, and finally coating with a thin polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layer. Because of the high conductivity of Cu layer and unique heterogeneous structure, the electrical conductivity of 22,548 S/m and electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of ~ 110 dB were obtained in the surface modified NWCFs under 25 mM copper plating solution. Furthermore, the composite fabrics have excellent Joule heating performance, which can reach 43 °C in 15 s at a voltage of 0.5 V even after 1000 bends. In addition, the composite fabrics also have outstanding super-hydrophobic properties, which can protect against a variety of common solutions and achieve self-cleaning. BACKGROUND: The brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens) is one of the major rice insect pests in Asia. Recently, high levels of insecticide resistance have been frequently reported and cytochrome P450 monooxygenase (P450)‐mediated metabolic detoxification is a common resistance mechanism in N. lugens. However, there has been no persuasive genetic method to prove the role of P450s in insecticide resistance in N. lugens. RESULTS: Here, CRISPR/Cas9 system was used to disrupt the P450 gene NlCYP6CS1 to elucidate its role in insecticide resistance in field populations of N. lugens. We successfully constructed a homozygous strain (Nl6CS1‐KO) with a 5‐bp deletion and 1‐bp insertion mutation of NlCYP6CS1. Compared with a background resistant strain (Nl‐R), the susceptibility of knockout strain Nl6CS1‐KO to imidacloprid, nitenpyram, thiamethoxam, dinotefuran, and pymetrozine was increased by 2.3‐, 3.4‐, 7.0‐, 4.2‐ and 3.9‐fold, respectively, but not significantly changed to triflumezopyrim, chlorpyrifos and buprofezin. Life table analysis demonstrated that the Nl6CS1‐KO strain resembled the Nl‐R strain in terms of egg and nymph developmental duration and adult lifespan, but differed from the Nl‐R strain in the survival rate of eggs and nymphs, reproduction, and body weight. CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrates the effect of functional deletion of NlCYP6CS1 on multiple insecticide resistance in N. lugens. Background: Clathrin‐dependent endocytosis is a vesicular transport process by which cells take macromolecules from the extracellular space to the intracellular space. It plays important roles in various cellular functions, but its biological significance in insect development and reproduction has not been well studied. Results: We characterized and functionally analyzed four major clathrin‐dependent endocytic pathway genes (TcChc, TcAP50, TcVhaSFD, TcRab7) in Tribolium castaneum. RNA interference (RNAi) by injecting double‐stranded RNA (dsRNA) targeting each gene at three doses (50, 100, or 200 ng per insect) in 20‐day‐old larvae led to 100% larval mortality. When the expressions of TcChc, TcVhaSFD, and TcRab7 were suppressed by injecting their respective dsRNAs at each dose in 1‐day‐old pupae, the adults that emerged from the dsRNA‐injected pupae were deformed, with the absence of wing development. The deformed adults died within 2 days after eclosion. When the expression of TcAP50 was suppressed by injecting its dsRNA into 1‐day‐old pupae, although no apparent deformed adults were observed, all the adults died within 35 days after eclosion. In addition, when the expressions of TcChc and TcVhaSFD were suppressed by injecting their respective dsRNAs at a reduced dose (10 ng per insect) in 5‐day‐old pupae, the ovarian development and oocyte production in the resultant females were completely inhibited. Conclusion: Our results indicate that clathrin‐dependent endocytosis is essential for insect development and reproduction. The uplift effect induced by soil liquefaction on buried pipelines that are critical to the serviceability of buildings, including potable water, natural gas, and sewage pipelines, was experimentally investigated. A full‐scale physical model of pipelines buried in liquefiable ground comprising distribution mains and service lines that connect distribution mains and buildings was built. Shaking table tests were conducted on this model with actual earthquake records utilized as the input motions. The performance of gravel as pipe ditch backfill for mitigating the liquefaction‐induced uplift was also evaluated. During the tests, accelerometers and piezometers were installed in free‐field (FF) soil and around the pipelines to reveal the pipeline–soil interaction and the soil liquefaction development. Wire potentiometers were also utilized to monitor any uplift or subsidence of the pipelines. Results indicate that the distribution mains for natural gas and sewage experienced an uplift during liquefaction of ground specimen. The excess porewater pressure buildup level around the uplifted pipelines was generally lower than that in FF soil and was even lower on top of the pipeline circumference, which may be attributed to the pipeline–soil interaction. Furthermore, the practicability of an existing simplified model for anti‐uplift stability assessment and its corresponding uplift force estimation were examined based on aforementioned observations. The findings indicate that the uplift effect for large‐diameter pipelines may be underestimated by simply using this simplified model. Simple Summary: A model beetle, Tribolium castaneum, carries a positive single-stranded RNA virus Tribolium castaneum iflavirus (TcIV). This study shows that the TcIV is prevalent among different laboratory cultures, different strains, and the same strain maintained in different laboratories, and in the Tribolium cell line TcA. Transovarial transmissions and their prevalence in the nervous system were supported in this study. The novel TcIV, showing no observable pathogenicity, offers an opportunity to study the interaction between the virus and the immune system in this model beetle species. Iflavirus is a group of viruses distributed mainly in arthropod species. We surveyed Tribolium castaneum iflavirus (TcIV) in different laboratory strains and in Sequence Read Archives (SRA) in GenBank. TcIV is highly specific to only T. castaneum and is not found in seven other Tenebrionid species, including the closely related species T. freemani. The same strains from different laboratories and different strains displayed largely different degrees of infections in the examination of 50 different lines by using Taqman-based quantitative PCR. We found that ~63% (27 out of 43 strains) of T. castaneum strains in different laboratories are positive for TcIV PCR with large degrees of variation, in the range of seven orders of magnitude, indicating that the TcIV is highly fluctuating depending on the rearing conditions. The TcIV was prevalent in the nervous system with low levels found in the gonad and gut. The transovarial transmission was supported in the experiment with surface-sterilized eggs. Interestingly, TcIV infection did not show observable pathogenicity. TcIV offers an opportunity to study the interaction between the virus and the immune system of this model beetle species. Development of insecticide resistance in insect populations is a major challenge to sustainable agriculture and food security worldwide. Buprofezin, one of the commonly used chitin synthesis inhibitors, has severely declined its control efficacy against the brown planthopper (BPH, Nilaparvata lugens), a devastating rice insect species. To date, however, mechanism of buprofezin resistance in target pests remains elusive. We conducted a long-term (25 years from 1996 to 2020) and large geographical scale (11 provinces and cities in China) resistance monitoring program for buprofezin in BPH, a notorious pest of rice crop in East and Southeast Asia. BPH rapidly developed resistance with > 1,000-fold resistance being detected in nearly all the field populations after 2015. Using the bulk segregant mapping method, we uncovered a novel mutation (G932C) in chs1 gene encoding chitin synthase 1 from a near isogeneic buprofezin-resistant (> 10,000-fold) strain harboring recessive, monogenic resistance. Using CRISPR/Cas9-based genome-modified Drosophila melanogaster possessing the same mutation as a model, we found that the G932C mutation was not only responsible for buprofezin resistance but also conferred a cross-resistance to cyromazine, an insect molting disruptor, on which the mode of action is largely unknown. Taken together, our study for the first time revealed the molecular mechanism conferring buprofezin resistance in BPH and implicated that cyromazine also targets chitin biosynthesis to confer its toxicity. The chemical industry has witnessed a heavy global environmental clean-up and remediation burden. Chemical industrial parks (CIPs) are important carriers of the chemical industry and present both opportunities and challenges in terms of environmental sustainability. The end-of-pipe waste treatment system, comprised of enterprise facilities and shareable infrastructure, is mandatory in Chinese CIPs; in that sense, its cost is often taken for granted without accurate calculation, and reduction opportunities are commonly missed. Quantifying the whole-process cost is thus crucial for promoting the waste treatment system of CIPs. This study established a bottom-up and trilayer nested model for waste treatment, which integrated interphase material flows, pollutant reduction technology, and whole-process cost accounting by targeting CIPs. The cost included wastewater treatment, waste gas treatment, and solid waste disposal costs, and each component further included depreciation, operation, and other expenditures. After empirically applying the model to a typical CIP in China, we revealed that this CIP attained a total waste treatment cost of 1.31 billion CNY (0.19 billion US dollars) in 2016, which is approximately 52.4% of the park's tax income. Overall, approximately 55.6% of the cost was attributable to wastewater treatment (729 millionCNY, 108 millionUS dollars), 12.5% to waste gas treatment, and 31.9% to solid waste disposal. In the empirical case study, the cost imposed a substantial economic burden on the industrial park, while the environmental performance of the waste treatment system still required improvement. The results called for systematic rethinkingwhich is featured by an extended system boundary and three dialectical relations in CIPs. Three policy recommendations were proposed by systematic rethinking, including symbiotic solutions targeting waste treatment infrastructures within and among enterprises, priority optimization on the key enterprises with high pollution emissionsand treatment costs, and flexible deployment of in-plant waste treatment facilities. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the application value of multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the diagnosis of iron deposition in the substantia nigra dense zone in Parkinson's disease (PD) and to evaluate the diagnostic value of the correlation amongmulti-parametric imaging indicators, clinical stage, and disease duration. Materials and methods: Thirty-six patients with clinically confirmed PD and 36 healthy controls were enrolled. The disease course was recorded, and PD severity was graded using the Hoehn-Yahr (H-Y) scale. All subjects underwent magnetic sensitivity weighted imaging (SWI), neuromelanin magnetic resonance imaging (NM-MRI), and a T2*mapping sequence. Based on the fusion of the NM-MRI and SWI amplitude maps, phase maps, and T2*MAPPING value maps, NM-MRI was used to delineate the dense zone of the substantia nigra, which was divided into three sub-regions: upper, middle, and lower. In this way, the amplitude, phase, and R2* values of each sub-region and the average value of the sum of the three sub-regions were obtained simultaneously in the SWI amplitude, phase, and T2*MAPPING maps. The multi-parameter imaging indices were compared between the two groups, and the correlation between them and clinical indices was evaluated in the PD group. Results: The upper (amplitude, phase value, R2* value), middle, and lower (amplitude) right substantia nigra compact zones were significantly different between the PD and control groups. The upper (phase value, R2* value) and middle (amplitude) areas of the left substantia nigra compact zone were also significantly different between the two groups (all P < 0.05). The mean values (amplitude, phase value, R2* value) of the right substantia nigra densification zone and themean values (phase value) of the left substantia nigra densification zone were also significantly different (all P < 0.05). Amplitudes in the middle and lower parts of the right substantia nigra dense zone were negatively correlated with the H-Y grade (middle: r = -0.475, P = 0.003; lower: r = -0.331, P = 0.049). Amplitudes of the middle and lower parts of the dense zone of the left substantia nigra were negatively correlated with the H-Y grade (middle: r = -0.342, P = 0.041; lower: r = -0.399, P = 0.016). The average amplitude of the right substantia nigra compact zone was negatively correlated with the H-Y grade (r = -0.367, P = 0.027). The average R2* value of the compact zone of the left substantia nigra was positively correlated with the H-Y grade (r = 0.345, P = 0.040). Conclusion: Multiparametric MRI sequence examination has application value in the evaluation of iron deposition in the dense zone of the substantia nigra in PD. Combined with NM-MRI, fusion analysis is beneficial for accurately locating the substantia nigra compact zone and quantitatively analyzing the iron deposition in different sub-regions. Quantitative iron deposition in the middle and lower parts of the substantia nigra dense zone may become an imaging biological indicator for early diagnosis, severity evaluation, and follow-up evaluation of PD and is thus conducive for clinical diagnosis and treatment evaluation. Metarhizium anisopliae is a broad-spectrum entomopathogenic fungus attacking Locusta migratoria. However, the complex immune system of L. migratoria has limited the insecticidal efficiency of M. anisopliae. Although many antifungal immune genes have been reported, the part-time genes involved in antifungal immunity have yet to be revealed. In this study, an immune-related protein was identified and named Apolipophorin-D (ApoLp-D). The ApoLp-D gene was highly expressed in the hemolymph of L. migratoria. The recombinant protein (rApoLp-D) showed a strong agglutination activity against conidia of M. anisopliae. Furthermore, RNAi of ApoLp-D decreased the antifungal activity of plasma against M. anisopliae. These results indicated that ApoLp-D played an important role in immune response of L. migratoria. A recombinant M. anisopliae was genetically engineered to express a double-stranded RNA (dsApoLp-D) targeting ApoLp-D in L. migratoria. The transgenic M. anisopliae successfully secreted dsApoLp-D and suppressed the expression of ApoLp-D and exhibited higher virulence against L. migratoria. Specifically, the time leading to a 100% mortality of L. migratoria challenged by the transgenic M. anisopliae was reduced from 9 days to 7 days. Our results provided a proof-of-concept of using genetic engineering approaches to enhance the insecticidal virulence of entomopathogenic fungi by RNAi-mediated suppression of the immune-related genes in insect pests. RNA interference (RNAi) is a specific post-transcriptional gene-silencing phenomenon, which plays an important role in the regulation of gene expression and the protection from transposable elements in eukaryotic organisms. In Drosophila melanogaster, RNAi can be induced by microRNA (miRNA), endogenous small interfering RNA (siRNA), or exogenous siRNA. However, the biogenesis of miRNA and siRNA in these RNAi pathways is aided by the double-stranded RNA binding proteins (dsRBPs) Loquacious (Loqs)-PB, Loqs-PD or R2D2. In this study, we identified three alternative splicing variants of Loqs, namely Loqs-PA, -PB, and -PC in the orthopteran Locusta migratoria. We performed in vitro and in vivo experiments to study the roles of the three Loqs variants in the miRNA- and siRNA-mediated RNAi pathways. Our results show that Loqs-PB assists the binding of pre-miRNA to Dicer−1 to lead to the cleavage of pre-miRNA to yield matured miRNA in the miRNA-mediated RNAi pathway. In contrast, different Loqs proteins participate in different siRNA-mediated RNAi pathways. In exogenous siRNA-mediated RNAi pathway, binding of Loqs-PA or LmLoqs-PB to exogenous dsRNA facilitates the cleavage of dsRNA by Dicer−2, whereas in endogenous siRNA-mediated RNAi pathway, binding of Loqs-PB or Loqs-PC to endogenous dsRNA facilitates the cleavage of dsRNA by Dicer−2. Our findings provide new insights into the functional importance of different Loqs proteins derived from alternative splicing variants of Loqs in achieving high RNAi efficiency in different RNAi pathways in insects. Clathrin heavy chain (Chc) is a constituent of clathrin‐coated vesicles and serves important functions in endocytosis and intracellular membrane trafficking but appears to have physiological roles also at the organismal level. Most of what we know about Chc functions originates from studies performed in fungal or vertebrate cells. However, the physiological functions of Chc in insects remain poorly understood. Here, we identified a Chc ortholog from a Locusta migratoria transcriptome database. RT‐qPCR revealed that LmChc was constitutively expressed in fifth‐instar nymphs. In this developmental stage, LmChc showed the highest expression in the ovary followed by hemolymph, testis, hindgut, midgut, and foregut. In isolated hemocytes, we detected the Chc protein in patches at the plasma membrane. To examine the role of LmChc in L. migratoria during development, RNA interference was performed by injecting dsRNA into the early fifth‐instar nymphs. Silencing of LmChc caused a lethal phenotype with molting defect from nymph to adult. In addition, silencing of LmChc resulted in abnormal development of the ovaries, the size of which was significantly smaller than that in controls. Taken together, our results suggest that LmChc is a vital gene in L. migratoria that plays an important role in growth, development, and reproduction. The interaction between plants and microbes dominates plant growth and fitness in specific environments. The study of the relationship between plant genotypes and rhizobacterial community structure would provide a deep insight into the recruitment strategies of plants toward soil bacteria. In this study, three genotypes of 18-year-old mature poplar (H1, H2, and H3) derived from four different parents were selected from a germplasm nursery of Populus deltoides. Rhizosphere soil carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus properties as well as the 16S rDNA sequences of rhizobacterial communities were analyzed to determine the relationship between poplar genotypes and rhizobacterial communities assembly. The results showed there were significant differences in the diversity (Chao1, ACE index, and Shannon index) of rhizobacterial communities between H1 and H2, as well as between H2 and H3, but no difference between H1 and H3. Principal component analysis also revealed a similar structure of rhizobacterial communities between H1 and H3, whereas the rhizobacterial communities of H2 demonstrated significant differences from H1 and H3. Linear discriminant effect size analysis indicated that there were 11 and 14 different biomarkers in the H1 and H3 genotype, respectively, but 42 in the H2 genotype. Co-occurrence network analysis indicated that the rhizobacterial communities of H2 had a distinct network structure compared to those of the other two genotypes, whereas H1 and H3 had a similar pattern of co-occurrence network. Threshold indicator taxa analysis revealed that 63 genera responded significantly to NO3 −-N content and 58 genera to NH4+-N/NO3 −-N ratio. Moreover, the stochastic assembly process was found to be decreased with increasing NO3 −-N content and fluctuated with increasing NH4+-N/NO3 −- N ratio. All results indicated that the structure of poplar rhizobacterial communities were influenced by host genotypes, and available nitrogen might play a dominant role in the assembly of rhizobacterial communities. Tumor clonal structure is closely related to future progression, which has been mainly investigated as mutation abundance clustering in bulk samples. With relatively limited studies at single‐cell resolution, a systematic comparison of the two approaches is still lacking. Here, using bulk and single‐cell mutational data from the liver and colorectal cancers, we checked whether co‐mutations determined by single‐cell analysis had corresponding bulk variant allele frequency (VAF) peaks. While bulk analysis suggested the absence of subclonal peaks and, possibly, neutral evolution in some cases, the single‐cell analysis identified coexisting subclones. The overlaps of bulk VAF ranges for co‐mutations from different subclones made it difficult to separate them. Complex subclonal structures and dynamic evolution could be hidden under the seemingly clonal neutral pattern at the bulk level, suggesting single‐cell analysis is necessary to avoid underestimation of tumor heterogeneity. Background: Acer rubrum L. (red maple) is a popular tree with attractive colored leaves, strong physiological adaptability, and a high ornamental value. Changes in leaf color can be an adaptive response to changes in environmental factors, and also a stress response to external disturbances. In this study, we evaluated the effect of girdling on the color expression of A. rubrum leaves. We studied the phenotypic characteristics, physiological and biochemical characteristics, and the transcriptomic and metabolomic profiles of leaves on girdled and non-girdled branches of A. rubrum. Results: Phenotypic studies showed that girdling resulted in earlier formation of red leaves, and a more intense red color in the leaves. Compared with the control branches, the girdled branches produced leaves with significantly different color parameters a*. Physiological and biochemical studies showed that girdling of branches resulted in uneven accumulation of chlorophyll, carotenoids, anthocyanins, and other pigments in leaves above the band. In the transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses, 28,432 unigenes including 1095 up-regulated genes and 708 down-regulated genes were identified, and the differentially expressed genes were mapped to various KEGG (kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes) pathways. Six genes encoding key transcription factors related to anthocyanin metabolism were among differentially expressed genes between leaves on girdled and non-girdled branches. Conclusions: Girdling significantly affected the growth and photosynthesis of red maple, and affected the metabolic pathways, biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, and carbon metabolisms in the leaves. This resulted in pigment accumulation in the leaves above the girdling site, leading to marked red color expression in those leaves. A transcriptome analysis revealed six genes encoding anthocyanin-related transcription factors that were up-regulated in the leaves above the girdling site. These transcription factors are known to be involved in the regulation of phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, anthocyanin biosynthesis, and flavonoid biosynthesis. These results suggest that leaf reddening is a complex environmental adaptation strategy to maintain normal metabolism in response to environmental changes. Overall, the results of these comprehensive phenotype, physiological, biochemical, transcriptomic, and metabolomic analyses provide a deeper and more reliable understanding of the coevolution of red maple leaves in response to environmental changes. Objective: The objective of the study was to explore the CT and ultrasound features and clinical significance of perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) of the liver. Methods: Eleven hepatic PEComa patients treated in our hospital were retrospectively analyzed based on the characteristics of the imaging results of the patients, including conventional ultrasound, CDFI, contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS), and contrast-enhanced CT (CECT). Results: CT scans showed that all lesions were hypodense. Ultrasonography showed that lesions were either hyperechoic (4/11, 36.36%), hypoechoic (4/11, 36.36%), isoechoic (1/11, 9.09%), or heterogeneously echoic (2/11, 18.18%). CDFI showed that most of the lesions had an abundant blood supply (9/11, 81.82%). Whether on CT scan or ultrasonography, the margins of the lesions were dominated by clear margins. Ultrasonography revealed more features: hyperechoic patterns around lesions (3/11, 27.27%) and lateral shadow (5/11, 45.45%). The CDFI showed that large blood vessels were observed around the lesions (9/11, 81.82%). CECT shows two enhancement patterns: "fast in and fast out (FIFO)" (8/11, 72.72%) and "fast in and slow out (FISO)" (3/11, 27.27%). CEUS shows that all lesions had the enhancement pattern of "FISO," which was different from CECT. All lesions displayed rapid enhancement during HAP in CEUS during 7-20 s. Four patients (36.36%) washed out at 60-180 s, another four (36.36%) washed out at 180-300 s, and the remaining three patients (27.27%) showed no signs of washout even at 360 s. Conclusion: Some imaging features, such as clear margins, peripheral hyperechoic around the lesion, lateral shadow, the large blood vessels around lesions, and the "FISO" enhancement pattern, may indicate expansive growth of the tumor and be helpful in the diagnosis of PEComa. BACKGROUND: Chitin is a major component in the extracellular matrix of insects, and its metabolism largely affects insect development and molting. As essential degradative enzymes, chitinases are encoded by multiple genes that differ in size, expression pattern and function in insects. However, our limited knowledge on the functions of different chitinases in Agrotis ipsilon has prevented our application of new technologies to target these genes as new pest management strategies. RESULTS: We revealed 11 full‐length complementary DNA sequences of chitinase genes (AiChts) from A. ipsilon transcriptome. Although the domain architecture of these chitinases varied greatly, they all contained at least one chitinase catalytic domain. Developmental stage‐ and tissue‐dependent expression profiles showed that most AiChts had the highest expression in the pupal stage. Furthermore, AiCht2, AiCht6, AiCht7 and AiCht10 were mainly expressed in the integument, whereas AiCht8 and AiCht‐h had the highest expression in the midgut. The RNA interference (RNAi) experiment revealed that knockdown of AiCht10 or the imaginal disc growth factor gene (AiIDGF) induced high larval mortality. Larvae failed to shed the old cuticle during molting after the injection of double‐stranded RNA targeting AiCht10 (dsAiCht10), whereas the larval bodies shrunk and blackened after the injection of dsRNA targeting AiIDGF (dsAiIDGF). CONCLUSION: Our results revealed for the first time the important functions of AiCht10 and AiIDGF in A. ipsilon. Disruption of morphogenesis, an essential process in organismal development, can lead to disruption of biological processes, reduction in fitness, or even death of an organism. The roles of lethal giant larvae (Lgl) protein in maintaining tissue organization have been studied extensively in mammals, but little is known about this gene's roles in promoting correct tissue morphogenesis in insects. In this study, we identified an Lgl ortholog in Locusta migratoria. RT‐qPCR results revealed that LmLgl was constitutively expressed during third, fourth, and fifth instar nymphs. Furthermore, LmLgl showed highest expression in the ovary followed by wing pads, midgut, hindgut, Malpighian tubules, and foregut of the third‐instar nymphs. To examine the role of LmLgl in L. migratoria development, RNA interference was performed during nymphal stages. Silencing of LmLgl increased body size but decreased bodyweight by 9.0%. Histological sections of the midgut revealed abnormal large masses of disordered epithelial cells in dsLmLgl‐injected nymphs. In addition, downregulation of LmLgl transcript levels significantly altered the morphological structure in midgut, resulting in the formation of tumor‐like structures. Our results indicated that LmLgl may act as a tumor‐suppressor gene, which plays an essential role in maintaining a normal morphological structure in the midgut of L. migratoria. High-speed railway offers an opportunity to address the disparity between economic development and transportation capacity. It can improve transportation capacity and reduce transportation costs. With the large-scale running of the high-speed railway, initial activities will impact the surrounding ecological environment. Ecological environment monitoring along the railway is very important. However, the current research focuses mainly on a single ecological index evaluation of ecological problems and mostly on the ecological evaluation along the highway, with less research on ecological monitoring along the high-speed railway. Moreover, the studies have not considered the comprehensive effects of multiple remote sensing indexes. Given the above scientific issues, taking the Beijing-Tianjin Intercity (BTIC) railway as the study area, we selected the Landsat satellite images from 2008, 2011, 2014, 2017, and 2020 as the research data. We used the revised remote sensing-based ecological index (R_RSEI) to comprehensively analyze and evaluate the ecological environment quality along the BTIC railway from 2008 to 2020. After extracting the greenness, dryness, humidity, and heat indices, we determined the weights of four indices using principal component analysis. According to the ecological environment assessment index model, we monitored and analyzed the ecological environment along the BTIC railway. The results showed that the ecological environment quality along the BTIC railway generally increased from 2008 to 2011 and then generally decreased from 2014 to 2020. The ecological and environmental quality of the study area generally was ranked as "poor" and "worse." Therefore, the trend of environmental pollution along the BTIC railway was not optimistic and thus led to many problems in the ecological environment. Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus L.), a vegetable with medical applications, has a strong adaptability to marginal barren land, but the suitability as planting material in saline land remains to be evaluated. This study was envisaged to examine salt tolerance in Jerusalem artichoke from the angle of photosynthetic apparatus stability by dissecting the photosynthetic electron transport process. Potted plants were exposed to salt stress by watering with a nutrient solution supplemented with NaCl. Photosystem I (PSI) and photosystem II (PSII) photoinhibition appeared under salt stress, according to the significant decrease in the maximal photochemical efficiency of PSI (MMR/MR0) and PSII. Consistently, leaf hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) concentration and lipid peroxidation were remarkably elevated after 8 days of salt stress, confirming salt-induced oxidative stress. Besides photoinhibition of the PSII reaction center, the PSII donor side was also impaired under salt stress, as a K step emerged in the prompt chlorophyll transient, but the PSII acceptor side was more vulnerable, considering the decreased probability of an electron movement beyond the primary quinone (ETo/TRo) upon depressed upstream electron donation. The declined performance of entire PSII components inhibited electron inflow to PSI, but severe PSI photoinhibition was not averted. Notably, PSI photoinhibition elevated the excitation pressure of PSII (1-qP) by inhibiting the PSII acceptor side due to the negative and positive correlation of MMR/MR0 with 1-qP and ETo/TRo, respectively. Furthermore, excessive reduction of PSII acceptors side due to PSI photoinhibition was simulated by applying a specific inhibitor blocking electron transport beyond primary quinone, demonstrating that PSII photoinhibition was actually accelerated by PSI photoinhibition under salt stress. There is interest in developing controlled release materials (CRMs) with novel modes of action to improve resistance management. Long-lasting insecticide-incorporated netting (LLIN) with deltamethrin has been effectively used against stored-product pests. Here, we evaluated the efficacy of different CRMs (LLIN or packaging) with each of four active ingredients (AI) (deltamethrin, permethrin, indoxacarb, and dinotefuran) and compared them to control CRMs in reducing movement and increasing mortality of phosphine-susceptible and -resistant Rhyzopertha dominica and Tribolium castaneum. Adults were exposed for 0.5, 2, or 60 min, and movement was assessed immediately or after 24, or 168 h using video-tracking and Ethovision software. We recorded total distance and velocity traveled by adults. Finally, we tested higher rates of each AI on surrogate netting material (e.g. standardized-sized cheesecloth) and varied exposure time to obtain median lethal time (LT50) for each compound and susceptibility. Exposure to LLIN with deltamethrin significantly reduced the movement of both species compared to the other CRMs regardless of their susceptibility to phosphine. Deltamethrin was the most effective AI for both species, while dinotefuran and indoxacarb were the least effective for R. dominica and T. castaneum adults, respectively. Most AIs resulted in appreciable and approximately equivalent mortality at higher concentrations among phosphine-susceptible and -resistant strains. Our results demonstrate that CRMs can be an additional approach to combat phosphine-resistant populations of stored product insects around food facilities. Other compounds such as permethrin, dinotefuran, and indoxacarb are also effective against phosphine-resistant populations of these key stored product insects except indoxacarb for T. castaneum. Rab proteins constitute the largest family of small GTPases, which play pivotal roles in intracellular membrane trafficking in all eukaryotes. A number of Rab genes have been identified in eukaryotes; however, very little information about these genes has been reported in insects. In the current study, for the first time we identified and characterized 27 Rab family genes from Locusta migratoria. Phylogenetic analysis and comparison of domain architecture indicated that Rab family genes are highly conserved among insect species. Tissue‐dependent expression profiles indicated that expression of Rab genes was highest in the ovary, except for LmRab3, which was most highly expressed in hemolymph. The biological function of each Rab gene was investigated using RNA interference (RNAi). Double‐stranded RNA targeting each Rab gene was injected into the hemocoel of nymphs and revealed that suppression of two Rab genes (LmRab5 and LmRab11A) caused 100% mortality. In addition, nymphs injected with dsLmRab5 exhibited severe phenotypic defects in the gastric caeca and midgut, while dsLmRab11A arrested the molting process. We then applied the RNAi of RNAi technique to test if silencing either of these two genes would affect the suppression of the lethal giant larvae (LmLgl) reporter gene and found that suppression of LmRab5 diminished the RNAi efficiency of LmLgl, whereas suppression of LmRab11A enhanced RNAi efficiency of LmLgl. These results indicate that Rab genes contribute differently to RNAi efficiency in different tissues. Background: Vacuolar (H+)‐ATPase (V‐ATPase) is a multi‐subunit enzyme that hydrolyzes adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to transport protons across a cellular membrane, and it plays an important role in numerous biological processes, including in growth, development and immune responses. The c subunit of V‐ATPase is a highly conserved subunit of the rotatory proteolipid ring that is required for binding and transporting protons. To date, there are only a few published reports on V‐ATPase‐c functions in insects. Results: We identified and characterized the V‐ATPase‐c gene in Locusta migratoria, one of the most destructive agricultural insect pests in the world. LmV‐ATPase‐c was predominately expressed in Malpighian tubules of nymphs, followed by the hindgut and ovary, while the other tissues showed relatively low expression levels. Silencing of LmV‐ATPase‐c caused severe molting defects in nymphs and a high mortality rate of > 90%. Histological staining and microscopic examination of sections from the abdominal cuticle revealed the absence of newly formed cuticle in nymphs that were injected with dsLmV‐ATPase‐c. In addition, silencing of LmV‐ATPase‐c transcript levels significantly impaired RNA interference (RNAi) efficiency of a reporter gene. By quantifying double‐stranded RNA (dsRNA) amounts by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR), we found that RNAi against LmV‐ATPase‐c provoked a dramatic accumulation of dsRNA in the endosomes of epidermal and midgut cells of Locusta migratoria. Conclusion: Our results indicate that LmV‐ATPase‐c is indispensable for the formation of new cuticle during the molting process and has pivotal functions in dsRNA escape from endosomes. Simple Summary: RNA interference (RNAi) has shown great potentials as a novel technology for insect pest management. However, numerous studies have shown that the efficiency of RNAi varies substantially among different insect species. For example, as a major insect pest of corn, the Asian corn borer (Ostrinia furnacalis) showed very low RNAi efficiency. Therefore, it is necessary to develop new strategies for enhancing RNAi efficiency in insects with low RNAi efficiency. In this study, six core RNAi pathway genes were identified and characterized from O. furnacalis transcriptome database. After dsEGFP was injected into O. furnacalis, the expression of the core RNAi pathway genes (OfDicer2 and OfAgo2) was significantly up-regulated in response to the exposure of dsEGFP. As a result, the RNAi efficiency against the target genes in certain tissues of O. furnacalis was significantly improved. These results suggest that RNAi efficiency can be improved by inducing the expression of key RNAi pathway genes in O. furnacalis. RNA interference (RNAi) is a sequence-specific gene silencing mechanism that holds great promise for effective management of agricultural pests. Previous studies have shown that the efficacy of RNAi varies among different insect species, which limits its wide spread application in the field of crop protection. In this study, we identified and characterized six core RNAi pathway genes including OfDicer1, OfDicer2, OfR2D2, OfAgo1, OfAgo2, and OfAgo3 from the transcriptomic database of the Asian corn borer (Ostrinia furnacalis). Domain analysis showed that the six deduced proteins contained the necessary functional domains. Insect developmental stage- and tissue-specific expression analysis showed that five genes were expressed in all the stages and tissues examined except OfAgo3, which showed low expression in larvae, and high expression in pupae and adults and in the midgut. RT-qPCR was performed to examine the response of these six genes to exogenous double-stranded RNA (dsRNA). Interestingly, the transcript levels of OfDicer2 and OfAgo2 were significantly enhanced after the injection of dsEGFP at different time points and tissues investigated. Consequently, the RNAi efficiency in targeting the insect endogenous genes can be greatly enhanced in the hemolymph or midgut. Taken together, our investigations suggest that RNAi efficiency can be enhanced by pre-injection of dsRNA to induce the RNAi core machinery genes, which could be a useful strategy to improving RNAi efficiency for studying gene functions under laboratory conditions. Charcoal medicine is a frequently used complementary and alternative drug therapy for hemorrhagic diseases. However, studies (other than those assessing effects on hemostasis) on charcoal-processed medicines are limited. Carbon dots (CDs) are quasi-spherical nanoparticles that are biocompatible and have high stability, low toxicity, unique optical properties. Currently, there are various studies carried out to evaluate their efficacy and safety. The exploration of using traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) -based CDs for the treatment of common diseases has received great attention. Objective: To analyze the survival outcomes and prognostic factors of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for pancreatic adenocarcinoma liver metastasis (PALM). Methods: Between January 2010 and July 2021, 20 patients (13 males) with an average age of 58.9 ± 11.7 years who underwent RFA for PALM were included. The mean maximum diameter of PALMs was 2.6 ± 1.1 cm (1.0–6.0 cm). Survival curves were built using the Kaplan-Meier method and compared by the log-rank test. Multivariable analyses were performed by using the Cox proportional hazards model. Results: Twenty patients with 29 PALMs underwent 23 RFA sessions. Technical efficacy was achieved in 28 PALMs (28/29, 96.6%). The mean overall survival (OS) after RFA was 14.6 months and the 1-, 2- year survival rates were 39.5%, 18.1%, respectively. With multivariate analysis, abnormal serum levels of CA199 (p = 0.023) and extrahepatic metastasis before RFA (p = 0.038) were identified as independent prognostic factors for OS in patients with PALM. Additionally, the mean progression-free survival (PFS) after RFA was 11.5 months and 1-, 2- year survival rates were 26.0%, 17.3%, respectively. With multivariate analysis, abnormal serum levels of CA199 (p = 0.016) and extrahepatic metastasis before RFA (p = 0.043) were also identified as independent prognostic factors for PFS in patients with PALM. Conclusion: RFA is a safe and effective treatment for patients with PALM, especially in patients with normal serum level of CA199 or the patients without extrahepatic metastases before RFA. This paper reports on eliciting anticipation strategy, a common strategy in simultaneous interpreting (SI) via sight translation (ST). A new ST variant, the dynamic type, was designed in a modular and progressive manner to facilitate the trainees’ transition into SI at the early stage of learning. The new tool was used and tested under a framework of action research that was conducted continuously over 3 years. Despite some limitations, the longitudinal study finds that the newly designed set of exercises is not only a skill development and transfer enabler but also a contributor to eliciting SI-related strategies. This article explains the validity of the exercise design for SI teaching. It then presents data analysis indicating the efficacy of dynamic ST in helping students draw on anticipation strategy. There has been a dearth of research elucidating the behavioral effect of microbially-produced volatile organic compounds on insects in postharvest agriculture. Demonstrating attraction to MVOC's by stored product insects would provide an additional source of unique behaviorally-relevant stimuli to protect postharvest commodities at food facilities. Here, we assessed the behavioral response of a primary (Rhyzopertha dominica) and secondary (Tribolium castaneum) grain pest to bouquets of volatiles produced by whole wheat that were untempered, or tempered to 12%, 15%, or 19% grain moisture and incubated for 9, 18, or 27 days. We hypothesized that MVOC's may be more important for the secondary feeder because they signal that otherwise unusable, intact grains have become susceptible by weakening of the bran. However, contrary to our expectations, we found that the primary feeder, R. dominica, but not T. castaneum was attracted to MVOC's in a wind tunnel experiment, and in a release-recapture assay using commercial traps baited with grain treatments. Increasing grain moisture resulted in elevated grain damage detected by near-infrared spectroscopy and resulted in small but significant differences in the blend of volatiles emitted by treatments detected by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC–MS). In sequencing the microbial community on the grain, we found a diversity of fungi, suggesting that an assemblage was responsible for emissions. We conclude that R. dominica is attracted to a broader suite of MVOC's than T. castaneum, and that our work highlights the importance of understanding insect-microbe interactions in the postharvest agricultural supply chain. Tribolium castaneum has a long history as a model species in many distinct subject areas, but improved connections among the genetics, genomics, behavioral, ecological, and pest management fields are needed to fully realize this species' potential as a model. Tribolium castaneum was the first beetle whose genome was sequenced, and a new genome assembly and enhanced annotation, combined with readily available genomic research tools, have facilitated its increased use in a wide range of functional genomics research. Research into T. castaneum's sensory systems, response to pheromones and kairomones, and patterns of movement and landscape utilization has improved our understanding of behavioral and ecological processes. Tribolium castaneum has also been a model in the development of pest monitoring and management tactics, including evaluation of insecticide resistance mechanisms. Application of functional genomics approaches to behavioral, ecological, and pest management research is in its infancy but offers a powerful tool that can link mechanism with function and facilitate exploitation of these relationships to better manage this important food pest. The efficiency of RNA interference (RNAi) varies substantially among different insect species. Rapid degradation of double‐stranded RNA (dsRNA) by dsRNA‐degrading nucleases (dsRNases) has been implicated to cause low RNAi efficiency in several insect species. In this study, we identified four dsRNase genes (OfdsRNase1, OfdsRNase2, OfdsRNase3 and OfdsRNase4) from the Asian corn borer (Ostrinia furnacalis) transcriptome database. Bioinformatic analyses showed that each deduced protein sequence contained endonuclease NS domains and signal peptides. Gene expression analysis revealed that OfdsRNase2 was exclusively expressed in the midgut of larvae. RNAi efficiency was investigated in 2‐d‐old fifth‐instar larvae (high expression of dsRNase2) and 2‐d‐old pupae (low expression of dsRNase2) by feeding or injecting dsRNA targeting a marker gene that encodes the lethal giant larvae protein (OfLgl). Our results showed that OfLgl only partially silenced the expression of OfLgl in pupae, but not in larvae, suggesting that OfdsRNase2 could contribute to lower RNAi efficiency in larval stages. This hypothesis was supported by our RNAi‐of‐RNAi experiment using a tissue culture technique where the silencing efficiency against the reporter gene, OfHex1, was significantly improved after knockdown of OfdsRNase2. When double luciferase assays were performed to evaluate the role of the four dsRNases in vitro, only OfdsRNase2 expressed in S2 cells significantly affected RNAi efficiency by degrading dsRNA. Cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (CYPs) play essential physiological functions in insects. CYP303A1 is highly conserved in insect species studied to date, and shows an indispensable role for adult eclosion in both Locusta migratoria and Drosophila melanogaster. However, how CYP303A1 is regulated to control insect developmental processes remains uninvestigated. In this study, we discovered functional binding sites for miR‐184 in the coding sequence of LmCYP303A1. The luciferase reporter assay showed that miR‐184 could target LmCYP303A1 and regulate its expression in vitro. Furthermore, overexpression of miR‐184 through microinjection of agomir to locusts reduced the transcripts of LmCYP303A1 and led to abnormal molting, which is similar to the phenotype of silencing LmCYP303A1 by direct injection of dsLmCYP303A1 to locusts. Meanwhile, down‐regulation of miR‐184 by injection of antagomir increased the LmCYP303A1 transcript and caused molting defects. Background: The relationship between alcohol consumption and Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology is unclear. Amyloid-β (Aβ) and tau biomarkers in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) have been proven valuable in establishing prognosis in pre-clinical AD.Objective: We sought to examine the associations between alcohol consumption and CSF AD biomarkers in cognitive intact subjects.Methods: A total of 806 cognitively intact participants who had measurements of CSF Aβ, pTau, and total Tau proteins and drinking characteristics were included from the Chinese Alzheimer's Biomarker and Lifestyle (CABLE) study. Linear and logistic regression analyses were utilized to explore the associations of alcohol consumption with CSF AD biomarkers. We examined the interaction effects of age, gender, and apolipoprotein epsilon (APOE) ɛ4 status on the relationships between the frequency of drinking and CSF biomarkers.Results: The multiple linear regression analyses revealed significant differences in CSF AD biomarkers between infrequent drinking (< 1 times/week) and frequent drinking groups (≥1 times/week). Participants in frequent drinking group had higher CSF p-tau/Aβ42 and tTau/Aβ42. Frequent drinking was significantly associated with greater pTau and tTau abnormalities compared to the infrequent drinking group in older (> 65 years) participants.Conclusion: The present study showed significant associations between drinking frequency and CSF AD biomarkers in cognitively intact older adults.
