The evolution of charge structure involved in lightning discharge of a thunderstorm over the central Tibetan Plateau is investigated for the first time, based on the data from very high frequency interferometer, radar and sounding. During the developing‐mature stage, the TP thunderstorm exhibited a tripolar charge structure evolved from an initial inverted dipole. At the mature stage, a bottom‐heavy tripole charge structure is clearly presented, with a strong lower positive charge center (LPCC) at temperatures above −10°C, a middle negative charge region between −30°C and −15°C, and an upper positive charge region at T < −30°C. As the LPCC was depleted, the charge structure evolved into a normal tripole with a pocket LPCC. The merging between different convective cells resulted in the formation of two adjacent negative charge regions located directly and obliquely above the LPCC, and horizontally arranged different charge regions were simultaneously involved in the same lightning discharge. Using the data from the accurate lightning VHF interferometer, electric field mill, fast/slow antenna and C‐band radar, the evolution of the charge structure of thunderstorms and their influence on lightning discharges are investigated. With the energy crisis, environmental pollution and recession becoming increasingly serious, regional sustainable development has become an important global research issue. As a special form of economic development, industrial agglomeration plays an important role in regional sustainable development. However, while driving economic development, industrial agglomeration can have a negative external effect. How to balance the two sides of industrial agglomeration to promote sustainable regional development is an important challenge facing contemporary society. From the perspective of industrial factor agglomeration, this study examines the impacts of the spatial agglomeration of patent technology and practitioners in new energy industries on regional sustainable development capability. The results show that the spatial agglomeration of new energy technology and of practitioners has negative and positive effects on regional sustainable development capability, respectively, and this effect is more obvious in economically underdeveloped regions. Based on the results, countermeasures and suggestions are proposed, including adjusting the structure of regional industrial agglomeration, shifting the pattern of new energy technology diffusion, optimizing the regional staffing structure and implementing institutional reforms in regional sustainable development governance. This document summarizes a study on interstitial lung disease (ILD) in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The study found that ILD was present in 8.28% of SLE patients and was associated with disease duration. Ground-glass opacity was the most common abnormality in chest imaging of SLE-ILD patients. Treatment with corticosteroids, immunosuppressive therapy, and antifibrotic therapy showed improvements in chest imaging and pulmonary function. Early detection and treatment of ILD in SLE patients is important, but more research is needed to evaluate specific treatments. [Extracted from the article]

Based on comprehensive observations, including total lightning, Doppler radar, precipitation, and other meteorological data, the variations in thunderstorm properties and lightning activity of different categories for thunderstorms over the Beijing area during five warm seasons were investigated. According to the morphology of radar echo, thunderstorms were classified into five categories, including single convective cells, multi-cells, linear mesoscale convective system (MCS), nonlinear MCS, and weak convective precipitation system (WCPS). The diurnal variability of lightning, thunderstorm occurrence, and precipitation showed late-afternoon maxima, with the peak time of lightning frequency occurring before that of precipitation. Despite WCPS having the lowest lightning frequency, the percentage of +CG/CG was the highest with large peak currents. The convective available potential energy (CAPE) of linear MCS, multi-cells, nonlinear MCS, single cells, and WCPS categories followed a pattern from largest to smallest. Meanwhile, warm cloud depth (WCD) exhibited a smaller value in the well-organized thunderstorm categories and a larger value in the WCPS. The topographic forcing mechanism and large wind gradient along mountain slopes facilitated convection occurrence and enhancement, further promoting lightning production. Aerosol effects on the lightning intensity and polarity of a continental supercell storm were investigated using a three‐dimensional lightning scheme within the Weather Research and Forecasting model. We find that both intra‐cloud (IC) and cloud‐to‐ground (CG) flashes are enhanced by the increasing number of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN), especially the percentage of positive CG (+CG) strokes peaking at 42%. Electrical characteristics of the storm varied in different aerosol scenarios through microphysical processes. Added aerosols increase the number of cloud droplets and ice‐phase hydrometeors. The greater ice‐crystal concentration and larger graupel size ensure sufficient charge separation, leading to higher charge density and more lightning discharges. In addition, an inverted polarity charge structure with a strong positive‐charge region in the mid‐levels was formed mainly due to the positively charged graupel in the presence of higher supercooled cloud water content. Positive lightning channels originating from this positive‐charge region propagated to the ground, producing more +CG strokes. When the aerosol concentration was low, the charge density in the upper positive‐charge region was much lower due to smaller ice‐particle content. Consequently, there were barely any +CG strokes. Most of the negative CG flashes deposited positive charge in the lower negative‐charge region. Using a clustering algorithm based on cloud‐to‐ground (CG) lighting data, 72,974 thunderstorms were identified and tracked in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River Basin from May to September of 2016–2020. Thunderstorms predominantly occur in the southeast region and move to the northeast at a speed of 16–64 km/hr. Most thunderstorms have short durations (98.3%, ≤3 hr) and low CG flash frequencies (90.0%, ≤64). Thunderstorms with longer durations are mainly triggered near the mountains and tend to occur (end) earlier (later) in the afternoon (evening). The peak composite reflectivity (CR) corresponding to CG flashes from all thunderstorms is 50 dBZ. Approximately 70% (20%) of CG flashes occur in convective (stratiform) areas. The first CG flash of a thunderstorm tends to occur in convective areas with a higher CR than that of the last CG flash. The average and maximum CRs of CG flashes increase significantly with thunderstorm duration. Based on three-dimensional lightning data and an S-band Doppler radar, a strong relationship was identified between lightning activity and the radar volume of squall lines. A detailed analysis of the squall line investigates the relationship following an exponential relationship. According to the correlation between lightning and the radar volume, three radar-volume-based lightning parameterization schemes, named the V30dBZ, V35dBZ, and V40dBZ lightning schemes, have been established and introduced into the weather research and forecasting (WRF) model. The performance of lightning precondition by different lightning parameterization schemes was evaluated, including the radar-volume-based schemes (V30dBZ, V35dBZ, and V40dBZ), as well as existing lightning schemes (PR92_1, PR92_2, and the Lightning Potential Index (LPI)). The evaluation shows that the simulated spatial lightning density and temporal lightning frequency by the radar-volume-based lightning schemes are more consistent with the observations. While the two PR_92 lightning schemes significantly underestimated the magnitude of lightning density. The Lightning Mapping Imager (LMI) onboard the Fengyun-4A (FY-4A) satellite is the first independently developed satellite-borne lightning imager in China. It enables continuous lightning detection in China and surrounding areas, regardless of weather conditions. The FY-4A LMI uses a Charge-Coupled Device (CCD) array for lightning detection, and the accuracy of lightning positioning is influenced by cloud top height (CTH). In this study, we proposed an ellipsoid CTH parallax correction (ECPC) model for lightning positioning applicable to FY-4A LMI. The model utilizes CTH data from the Advanced Geosynchronous Radiation Imager (AGRI) on FY-4A to correct the lightning positioning data. According to the model, when the CTH is 12 km, the maximum deviation in lightning positioning caused by CTH in Beijing is approximately 0.1177° in the east–west direction and 0.0530° in the north–south direction, corresponding to a horizontal deviation of 13.1558 km, which exceeds the size of a single ground detection unit of the geostationary satellite lightning imager. Therefore, it is necessary to be corrected. A comparison with data from the Beijing Broadband Lightning Network (BLNET) and radar data shows that the corrected LMI data exhibit spatial distribution that is closer to the simultaneous BLNET lightning positioning data. The coordinate differences between the two datasets are significantly reduced, indicating higher consistency with radar data. The correction algorithm decreases the LMI lightning location deviation caused by CTH, thereby improving the accuracy and reliability of satellite lightning positioning data. The proposed ECPC model can be used for the real-time correction of lightning data when CTH is obtained at the same time, and it can be also used for the post-correction of space-based lightning detection with other cloud top height data. We explore the association of polymorphisms in Secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC) with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and detect SPARC mRNA and protein expression in a Chinese Han population.Methods: Nine single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of SPARC were genotyped in 768 AS patients and 768 controls by TaqMan genotyping assay. mRNA expression of SPARC was detected by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), and serum level of SPARC protein was detected by ELISA.Results: The frequency of A allele of rs171121187 was significantly higher in AS patients than in controls (Pc=0.003, odds ratio [OR]=1.45, 95% confidence interval [95% CI] = 1.18– 1.77), the AA and AC genotypes increased the risk of AS when compared with CC genotype (Pc=0.003, OR=3.96, 95% CI=1.80– 8.75, and Pc=0.003, OR=1.27, 95% CI=1.01– 1.61, respectively). The frequency of G allele of rs4958487 was significantly lower in AS than in controls (Pc=0.001, OR=0.60, 95% CI=0.47– 0.68), the GG and GA genotypes reduced the risk of AS when compared with AA genotype (Pc=0.005, OR=0.46, 95% CI 0.18– 1.14, and Pc=0.005, OR=0.60, 95% CI=0.45– 0.79, respectively). The haplotype AA of rs17112187/rs4958487 significantly increased the risk of AS (P=2.31E-5, OR=1.60, 95% CI=1.28– 1.98), while haplotype CG decreased the risk of AS (P=5.42E-5, OR=0.55, 95% CI=0.41– 0.74). Expression levels of SPARC mRNA were significantly lower in both Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and granulocytes in AS patients than in controls (P=0.008 and P=0.005, respectively). SPARC protein levels were also reduced in AS patients versus the controls (P= 0.002).Conclusion: This study indicates that polymorphisms in SPARC are associated with AS susceptibility, and both mRNA and protein levels of SPARC are decreased in AS patients in a Chinese Han population. Assembling 2D‐material (2DM) nanosheets into micro‐ and macro‐architectures with augmented functionalities requires effective strategies to overcome nanosheet restacking. Conventional assembly approaches involve external binders and/or functionalization, which inevitably sacrifice 2DM's nanoscale properties. Noble metal ions (NMI) are promising ionic crosslinkers, which can simultaneously assemble 2DM nanosheets and induce synergistic properties. Herein, a collection of NMI–2DM complexes are screened and categorized into two sub‐groups. Based on the zeta potentials, two assembly approaches are developed to obtain 1) NMI‐crosslinked 2DM hydrogels/aerogels for heterostructured catalysts and 2) NMI–2DM inks for templated synthesis. First, tetraammineplatinum(II) nitrate (TPtN) serves as an efficient ionic crosslinker to agglomerate various 2DM dispersions. By utilizing micro‐textured assembly platforms, various TPtN–2DM hydrogels are fabricated in a scalable fashion. Afterward, these hydrogels are lyophilized and thermally reduced to synthesize Pt‐decorated 2DM aerogels (Pt@2DM). The Pt@2DM heterostructures demonstrate high, substrate‐dependent catalytic activities and promote different reaction pathways in the hydrogenation of 3‐nitrostyrene. Second, PtCl4 can be incorporated into 2DM dispersions at high NMI molarities to prepare a series of PtCl4–2DM inks with high colloidal stability. The impacts of aerosol and thermodynamics on electrification and lightning activities have been investigated in detail using the Weather Research and Forecasting Model coupled with a double‐moment microphysics parameterization and an explicit electrification lightning scheme. To obtain a varied combination of convective available potential energy (CAPE) values and aerosol concentrations, a sounding was modified consistently and initiated with five sets of aerosol concentrations that served as cloud condensation nuclei. The simulated electric processes respond to the varying dynamical and microphysical characteristics associated with the different CAPE and aerosol conditions. Under high CAPE circumstances, the augmentation of ice‐phase particle leads to the enhancement of non‐inductive charging primarily through the dynamic processes. Increased aerosol content further invigorates the electrification through microphysical processes. Elevated aerosol loading under low CAPE conditions increases cloud droplet and ice crystal numbers. Larger graupel particle size further leads to the enhanced electric intensity and lightning discharges. Depolymerization is a promising strategy for recycling waste plastic into constituent monomers for subsequent repolymerization1. However, many commodity plastics cannot be selectively depolymerized using conventional thermochemical approaches, as it is difficult to control the reaction progress and pathway. Although catalysts can improve the selectivity, they are susceptible to performance degradation2. Here we present a catalyst-free, far-from-equilibrium thermochemical depolymerization method that can generate monomers from commodity plastics (polypropylene (PP) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)) by means of pyrolysis. This selective depolymerization process is realized by two features: (1) a spatial temperature gradient and (2) a temporal heating profile. The spatial temperature gradient is achieved using a bilayer structure of porous carbon felt, in which the top electrically heated layer generates and conducts heat down to the underlying reactor layer and plastic. The resulting temperature gradient promotes continuous melting, wicking, vaporization and reaction of the plastic as it encounters the increasing temperature traversing the bilayer, enabling a high degree of depolymerization. Meanwhile, pulsing the electrical current through the top heater layer generates a temporal heating profile that features periodic high peak temperatures (for example, about 600 °C) to enable depolymerization, yet the transient heating duration (for example, 0.11 s) can suppress unwanted side reactions. Using this approach, we depolymerized PP and PET to their monomers with yields of about 36% and about 43%, respectively. Background: Artificial microbial consortia composed of heterotrophic and photoautotrophic organisms represent a unique strategy for converting light energy and carbon dioxide into high-value bioproducts. Currently, the types of desired bioproducts are still limited, and microbial fitness benefit rendered by paired partner generally needs to be intensified. Exploring novel artificial microbial consortia at a laboratory scale is an essential step towards addressing this unmet need. This study aimed to conduct and analyze an artificial consortium composed of cyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus FL130 with the filamentous fungus Aspergillus nidulans TWY1.1 for producing fungi-derived secondary metabolite of polyketide neosartoricin B. Results: Polyketide-producing A. nidulans TWY1.1 substantially ameliorated the growth and the survival of sucrose-secreting cyanobacterium S. elongatus FL130 in salt-stressed environments. Besides sucrose, comparable amounts of other carbohydrates were released from axenically cultured FL130 cells, which could be efficiently consumed by TWY1.1. Relative to axenically cultured FL130, less glycogen was accumulated in FL130 cells co-cultured with TWY1.1, and the glycogen phosphorylase gene catalyzing the first step for glycogen degradation had two-fold expression. Different from axenically cultured filamentous fungi, abundant vacuoles were observed in fungal hyphae of TWY1.1 co-cultured with cyanobacterium FL130. Meanwhile, FL130 cells displayed a characteristic pattern of interacting with its heterotrophic partner, densely dispersing along certain hyphae of TWY1.1. Finally, polyketide neosartoricin B was produced from TWY1.1 in FL130-TWY1.1 co-cultures, which was tightly adjusted by nitrogen level. Conclusion: Overall, the results thoroughly proved the concept of pairing cyanobacteria with filamentous fungi to build artificial consortia for producing fungi-derived biomolecules. Background. Pregnancy in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients is a challenge due to the potential maternal and fetal complications. Therefore, a multidisciplinary assessment of disease risk before and during pregnancy is essential to improve pregnancy outcomes. Objectives. Our purpose was to (i) define clusters of patients with similar history and laboratory features and determine the associative maternal and perinatal outcomes and (ii) evaluate the risk spectrum of maternal and perinatal outcomes of pregnancy in SLE patients, represented by our established risk-assessment chart. Methods. Medical records of 119 patients in China were analyzed retrospectively. Significant variables with p < 0.05 were selected. The self-organizing map was used for clustering the data based on historical background and laboratory features. Results. Clustering was conducted using 21 maternal and perinatal features. Five clusters were recognized, and their prominent maternal manifestations were as follows: cluster 1 (including 27.73% of all patients): preeclampsia and lupus nephritis; cluster 2 (22.69%): oligohydramnios, uterus scar, and femoral head necrosis; cluster 3 (13.45%): upper respiratory tract infection; cluster 4 (15.97%): premature membrane rupture; and cluster 5 (20.17%): no problem. Conclusion. Pregnancy outcomes in SLE women fell into three categories, namely high risk, moderate risk, and low risk. To investigate the process of convective merger (CM) and its effect on thunderstorms evolution and corresponding electrical activity, a severe squall line that took place on 27 July 2015 over the Beijing Metropolitan Region (BMR) is simulated and studied using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model coupled with an explicit electrification lightning scheme (E‐WRF). The model‐simulated radar reflectivity reasonably captured the whole squall line evolution, including the merging of individual cells and storms. The variation of normalized flash frequency simulated by E‐WRF is highly consistent with the occurrence of a prominent flash rate surge during the CM both in the observation and the simulation. Cloud bridge is one of the regions where lightning events increase most. The upstream anvil and the sinking outflow led to the rapid connection and formation of new convective cells between the two older main storms. Subsequently, the mass of graupel and snow increased substantially at the middle level, and the mass of upper‐level ice was horizontally advected from upstream. During the merger, the in‐cloud charge distribution evolved from a staggered charge pocket structure into a vertically stratified five‐layer structure. This study supports the hypothesized role of CM in enhancing lightning activity, and further expands our understanding of CM effects on microphysics and charge‐redistribution. Conventional thermochemical syntheses by continuous heating under near-equilibrium conditions face critical challenges in improving the synthesis rate, selectivity, catalyst stability and energy efficiency, owing to the lack of temporal control over the reaction temperature and time, and thus the reaction pathways1–3. As an alternative, we present a non-equilibrium, continuous synthesis technique that uses pulsed heating and quenching (for example, 0.02 s on, 1.08 s off) using a programmable electric current to rapidly switch the reaction between high (for example, up to 2,400 K) and low temperatures. The rapid quenching ensures high selectivity and good catalyst stability, as well as lowers the average temperature to reduce the energy cost. Using CH4 pyrolysis as a model reaction, our programmable heating and quenching technique leads to high selectivity to value-added C2 products (>75% versus <35% by the conventional non-catalytic method and versus <60% by most conventional methods using optimized catalysts). Our technique can be extended to a range of thermochemical reactions, such as NH3 synthesis, for which we achieve a stable and high synthesis rate of about 6,000 μmol gFe−1 h−1 at ambient pressure for >100 h using a non-optimized catalyst. Direct nonoxidative methane conversion (DNMC) transforms CH4 to higher (C2+) hydrocarbons and H2 in a single step, but its utility is challenged by low CH4 equilibrium conversion, carbon deposition (coking), and its endothermic reaction energy requirement. This work reports a heat‐exchanged autothermal H2‐permeable tubular membrane reactor composed of a thin mixed ionic‐electronic conducting SrCe0.7Zr0.2Eu0.1O3–δ membrane supported on a porous SrCe0.8Zr0.2O3–δ tube in which a Fe/SiO2 DNMC catalyst is packed, that concurrently tackles all of these challenges. The H2‐permeation flux drives CH4 conversion. O2 from an air simulant (O2/He mixture) sweep outside the membrane reacts with permeated H2 to provide heat for the endothermic DNMC reaction. The energy balance between the endothermic DNMC and exothermic H2 combustion on opposite sides of the membrane is achieved, demonstrating the feasibility for autothermal operation using a simple air sweep gas. Moreover, the back diffusion of O2 from the sweep side to the catalyst side oxidizes any deposited carbon into CO. Thus, for the first time demonstrating all the desired attributes, a heat‐exchanged H2‐permeable membrane reactor capable of achieving single‐step auto‐thermal DNMC catalysis while simultaneously improving CH4 conversion and preventing coking is achieved. Ethanol to middle distillates (ETMD) is a promising pathway to produce sustainable liquid fuels to decarbonize the hard-to-electrify transportation sectors due to (1) the abundant sugar/starch and lignocellulosic biomass, (2) the existing deployment scale of fuel ethanol production (∼29 billion gallons per year globally), and (3) emerging opportunities in C2+ alcohol synthesis from CO2. Here we report a conceptual market-responsive biorefinery centered around a new ETMD pathway based on one-step ethanol to butene-rich olefins (ETO) over a Cu–Zn–Y/Beta catalyst. Specifically, this ethanol conversion pathway comprises one-step ETO, oligomerization, and hydrotreating. This ETO is distinct from that in the conventional ethanol-to-jet process which is based on two-step ethanol to ethylene and ethylene oligomerization to butenes. Butene-rich olefins can be shifted to butadiene-rich products by simply changing the reaction atmosphere from hydrogen to inert gas over the same ETO catalyst. Leveraging the experimental results, baseline techno-economic analysis (TEA) and sensitivity analysis indicate that the ethanol conversion cost is $0.60 per gallon gasoline equivalent (GGE), with opportunities for further cost reduction via improving the liquid hydrocarbon yield and space velocities, and process optimization on balancing dewatering of ethanol feed prior to the ETO step. The minimum fuel selling price (MFSP) of liquid hydrocarbons derived from corn starch ethanol with butadiene as coproduct is $1.64 per GGE, in the range that is cost competitive with petroleum kerosene-type jet fuel. Projected MFSP for cellulosic ethanol (corn stover) derived hydrocarbons is below $3.00 per GGE and co-production of butadiene further reduces the MFSP to $1.70 per GGE. The Well-to-Wake life-cycle analysis indicates that 85% greenhouse gas emission reduction can be achieved when using corn stover compared to petroleum reference and the associated carbon credits will provide significant economic incentives to favor the cellulosic ethanol-derived hydrocarbon fuels. This study demonstrates a low-cost pathway to middle distillate fuels leveraging existing ethanol infrastructure, where catalysis innovation drives the reduction of process complexity and flexible coproduction of a value-added chemical product. To investigate the effects of aerosols on lightning activity, the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model with a two-moment bulk microphysical scheme and bulk lightning model was employed to simulate a multicell thunderstorm that occurred in the metropolitan Beijing area. The results suggest that under polluted conditions lightning activity is significantly enhanced during the developing and mature stages. Electrification and lightning discharges within the thunderstorm show characteristics distinguished by different aerosol conditions through microphysical processes. Elevated aerosol loading increases the cloud droplets numbers, the latent heat release, updraft and ice-phase particle number concentrations. More charges in the upper level are carried by ice particles and enhance the electrification process. A larger mean-mass radius of graupel particles further increases non-inductive charging due to more effective collisions. In the continental case where aerosol concentrations are low, less latent heat is released in the upper parts and, as a consequence, the updraft speed is weaker, leading to smaller concentrations of ice particles, lower charging rates and fewer lightning discharges. Objective: Human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-B27 plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of AS. TNF polymorphisms have been reported to be associated with AS susceptibility, but the results of these previous studies have been inconsistent. The aim of this study was to explore whether TNF polymorphism is associated with AS susceptibility in HLA-27-positive population. Methods: Our search was done in the Pubmed, Embase, and Cochrane databases (up to March 2020). The pooled and individual odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of the minor allele of each locus were presented to assess the associations between TNF polymorphisms and AS in HLA-B27-positive population. Results: Ten studies from 8 articles were included in this meta-analysis. In the population of HLA-B27-positive patients and random healthy controls, there were statistical significance in the evaluation of association between the minor allele of TNF-238, -308, -857, -1031 and -863 and AS susceptibility, respectively. In the population of HLA-B27-positive patients and HLA-B27-positive healthy controls, there were no statistical differences in the comparison of minor allele of with their respective major allele in the fixed model. Conclusions: There was no association of the TNF polymorphisms with AS in the HLA-B27-positive AS group and HLA-B27-positive control group. Polymorphisms of TNF-238, -308, -857, -1031, -863 were associated with AS susceptibility in the HLA-B27-positive AS patients and random control population. The Dynamical-microphysical-electrical Processes in Severe Thunderstorms and Lightning Hazards (STORM973) project conducted coordinated comprehensive field observations of thunderstorms in the Beijing metropolitan region (BMR) during the warm season from 2014 to 2018. The aim of the project was to understand how dynamical, microphysical and electrical processes interact in severe thunderstorms in the BMR, and how to assimilate lightning data in numerical weather prediction models to improve severe thunderstorm forecasts. The platforms used in the field campaign included the Beijing Lightning Network (BLNET, consisting of 16 stations), 2 X-band dual linear polarimetric Doppler radars, and 4 laser raindrop spectrometers. The collaboration also made use of the China Meteorological Administration's mesoscale meteorological observation network in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. Although diverse thunderstorm types were documented, it was found that squall lines and multicell storms were the two major categories of severe thunderstorms with frequent lightning activity and extreme rainfall or unexpected local short-duration heavy rainfall resulting in inundations in the central urban area, influenced by the terrain and environmental conditions. The flash density maximums were found in eastern Changping District, central and eastern Shunyi District, and the central urban area of Beijing, suggesting that the urban heat island effect has a crucial role in the intensification of thunderstorms over Beijing. In addition, the flash rate associated with super thunderstorms can reach hundreds of flashes per minute in the central city regions. The super (5% of the total), strong (35%), and weak (60%) thunderstorms contributed about 37%, 56%, and 7% to the total flashes in the BMR, respectively. Owing to the close connection between lightning activity and the thermodynamic and microphysical characteristics of the thunderstorms, the lightning flash rate can be used as an indicator of severe weather events, such as hail and short-duration heavy rainfall. Lightning data can also be assimilated into numerical weather prediction models to help improve the forecasting of severe convection and precipitation at the cloud-resolved scale, through adjusting or correcting the thermodynamic and microphysical parameters of the model. Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the emerged coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 is spreading globally. The origin of SARS-Cov-2 and its evolutionary relationship is still ambiguous. Several reports attempted to figure out this critical issue by genome-based phylogenetic analysis, yet limited progress was obtained, principally owing to the disability of these methods to reasonably integrate phylogenetic information from all genes of SARS-CoV-2. Supertree method based on multiple trees can produce the overall reasonable phylogenetic tree. However, the supertree method has been barely used for phylogenetic analysis of viruses. Here we applied the matrix representation with parsimony (MRP) pseudo-sequence supertree analysis to study the origin and evolution of SARS-CoV-2. Compared with other phylogenetic analysis methods, the supertree method showed more resolution power for phylogenetic analysis of coronaviruses. In particular, the MRP pseudo-sequence supertree analysis firmly disputes bat coronavirus RaTG13 be the last common ancestor of SARS-CoV-2, which was implied by other phylogenetic tree analysis based on viral genome sequences. Furthermore, the discovery of evolution and mutation in SARS-CoV-2 was achieved by MRP pseudo-sequence supertree analysis. Taken together, the MRP pseudo-sequence supertree provided more information on the SARS-CoV-2 evolution inference relative to the normal phylogenetic tree based on full-length genomic sequences. 1,3-Pentadiene (piperylene) is an important monomer in the manufacturing of adhesives, plastics, and resins. It can be derived from biomass by the tandem ring-opening and dehydration (dehydra-decyclization) of 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (2-MTHF), but competing reaction pathways and the formation of another isomer (1,4-pentadiene) have limited piperylene yields to <60%. In this report, using detailed kinetic measurements of 2-MTHF dehydra-decyclization on zeolites with disparate acidities (boro-, and alumino-silicates) and micropore environments (MFI, MWW, and BEA), weakly acidic borosilicates were shown to exhibit ca. 10–30% higher selectivity to dienes at about five-to-sixty times lower proton-normalized rates than aluminosilicates (453–573 K). Dehydra-decyclization site time yields (STYs) were invariant for aluminosilicates within the investigated frameworks, indicating the absence of pore-confinement influence. However, individual site-normalized reaction rates varied by almost an order of magnitude on borosilicates in the order MWW > MFI > BEA at a given temperature (523 K), indicating the non-identical nature of active sites in these weak solid acids. The diene distribution remained far from equilibrium and was tuned towards the desirable conjugated diene (1,3-pentadiene) by facile isomerization of 1,4-pentadiene. This tuning capability was facilitated by high bed residence times, as well as the smaller micropore sizes among the zeolite frameworks considered. The suppression of competing pathways, and promotion of 1,4-pentadiene isomerization events lead to a hitherto unreported ∼86% 1,3-pentadiene yield and an overall ∼89% combined linear C5 dienes' yield at near quantitative (∼98%) 2-MTHF conversion on the borosilicate B-MWW, without a significant reduction in diene selectivities for at least 80 hours time-on-stream under low space velocity (0.85 g reactant per g cat. per h) and high temperature (658 K) conditions. Finally, starting with iso-conversion levels (ca. 21–26%) and using total turnover numbers (TONs) accrued over the entire catalyst lifetime as the stability criterion, borosilicates were demonstrated to be significantly more stable than aluminosilicates under reaction conditions (∼3–6× higher TONs). Micro/meso/macroporous (hierarchical) zeolites show remarkable catalytic performance for reactions involving bulky reactants. However, quantitative assessment of the microstructural characteristics contributing to the observed performance remains elusive. Here, structure–activity relationships are established for a set of micro/mesoporous self‐pillared pentasil (SPP) zeolites using two parallel liquid‐phase reactions (benzyl alcohol alkylation and self‐etherification) based on analysis of mass transport and reaction kinetics. A reaction–diffusion mathematical model is developed that quantitatively assigns the catalytic contributions of the external surface and micropores of SPP zeolites for these reactions. In addition, the effect of the zeolite external surface structure on the corresponding catalytic activity is quantitatively assessed by comparing SPP zeolites (with MFI structure) with MCM‐22 (with MWW structure). Abstract: Two‐dimensional MFI zeolite nanosheets contain Brønsted acid sites partially confined at the intercept between micro‐ and mesopores. These acid sites exhibit exceptional reactivities and stabilities for C=C bond coupling and ring‐closure reactions that transform light aldehydes to aromatics. These sites are much more effective than those confined within the micropores of MFI crystallites and those unconfined on H4SiW12O40 clusters or mesoporous aluminosilicate Al‐MCM‐41. Artificial photosynthesis uses a catalyst to convert CO2 into valuable hydrocarbon products by cleaving the C=O bond. However, this technology is strongly limited by two issues, namely insufficient catalytic efficiency and complicated catalyst-fabrication processes. Herein, we report the development of a novel spray-drying photocatalyst-engineering process that addresses these two issues. Through one-step spray drying, with a residence time of 1.5 s, nanocomposites composed of tin oxide (SnO2) nanoparticles and edge-oxidized graphene oxide (eo-GO) sheets were fabricated without post-treatment. These nanocomposites exhibited 28-fold and five-fold enhancements in photocatalytic efficiency during CO2 reduction compared to SnO2 and commercialized TiO2 (P25), respectively, after irradiation with simulated sunlight for 4 h. This scalable approach, based on short residence times and facile equipment setup, promotes the practical application of artificial photosynthesis through the potential mass production of efficient photocatalysts. The deployment of fossil resources such as petroleum, coal and natural gas to produce fuels and chemicals has resulted in excessive carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and serious environmental issues. The implementation of CO2 utilization as a raw material for synthesis of fuels and chemicals has potential to reduce CO2 emissions and close the carbon cycle. Cyclic carbonates, materials used as building blocks for polymers or green solvents in batteries, can be synthesized from CO2 and alkylene oxides. Although a variety of catalysts have been synthesized to activate CO2 and alkylene oxides for transformation into cyclic carbonates, either the catalytic efficiency is low or the catalyst cost is high. In the present work, we report a hierarchical porous metallized poly-melamine-formaldehyde (PMF) polymer catalyst that has a 100-fold monomer cost reduction and six- to several hundred-fold activity enhancement compared to the state-of-the-art catalysts for propylene carbonate synthesis from epoxide and CO2 under the same reaction conditions. The hierarchically interconnected macro-, meso- and micro-pore structures in PMF that are formed via one-step high internal phase emulsion polymerization facilitate mass transport and accessibility to active sites. The high density of aminal groups and triazine rings in PMF provides multiple sites for CO2 adsorption and the subsequent reaction with epoxide. The unprecedented low-cost and high-efficiency of metallized PMF as well as the simplicity in its synthesis exhibit great potential in the synthesis of cyclic carbonates for the chemical and plastics industries. The synthesis of hierarchical lamellar zeolites with a controlled meso-/microporous morphology and acidity is an expanding area of research interest for a wide range of applications. Here, we report a one-step synthesis of a hierarchical meso-/microporous lamellar MFI–Sn/Al zeolite (i.e., containing both Lewis acidic Sn- and Al-sites and a Brønsted acidic Al–O(H)–Si site) and its catalytic application for the conversion of glucose into 5-(ethoxymethyl)furfural (EMF). The MFI–Sn/Al zeolite was prepared with the assistance of a diquaternary ammonium ([C22H45–N+(CH3)2–C6H12–N+(CH3)2–C6H13]Br2−, C22-6-6) template in a composition of 100SiO2/5C22-6-6/18.5Na2O/xAl2O3/ySnO2/2957H2O (x = 0.5, 1, and 2; y = 1 and 2, respectively). The MFI–Sn/Al zeolites innovatively feature dual meso-/microporosity and dual Lewis and Brønsted acidity, which enabled a three-step reaction cascade for EMF synthesis from glucose in ethanol solvent. The reaction proceeded via the isomerization of glucose to fructose over Lewis acidic Sn sites and the dehydration of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and then the etherification of HMF and ethanol to EMF over the Brønsted acidic Al–O(H)–Si sites. The co-existence of multiple acidities in a single zeolite catalyst enabled one-pot cascade reactions for carbohydrate upgrading. The dual meso-/microporosity in the MFI–Sn/Al zeolites facilitated mass transport in processing of bulky biomass molecules. Common leaf spot (caused by Pseudopeziza medicaginis), rust (caused by Uromyces striatus), Leptosphaerulina leaf spot (caused by Leptosphaerulina briosiana) and Cercospora leaf spot (caused by Cercospora medicaginis) are the four common types of alfalfa leaf diseases. Timely and accurate diagnoses of these diseases are critical for disease management, alfalfa quality control and the healthy development of the alfalfa industry. In this study, the identification and diagnosis of the four types of alfalfa leaf diseases were investigated using pattern recognition algorithms based on image-processing technology. A sub-image with one or multiple typical lesions was obtained by artificial cutting from each acquired digital disease image. Then the sub-images were segmented using twelve lesion segmentation methods integrated with clustering algorithms (including K_means clustering, fuzzy C-means clustering and K_median clustering) and supervised classification algorithms (including logistic regression analysis, Naive Bayes algorithm, classification and regression tree, and linear discriminant analysis). After a comprehensive comparison, the segmentation method integrating the K_median clustering algorithm and linear discriminant analysis was chosen to obtain lesion images. After the lesion segmentation using this method, a total of 129 texture, color and shape features were extracted from the lesion images. Based on the features selected using three methods (ReliefF, 1R and correlation-based feature selection), disease recognition models were built using three supervised learning methods, including the random forest, support vector machine (SVM) and K-nearest neighbor methods. A comparison of the recognition results of the models was conducted. The results showed that when the ReliefF method was used for feature selection, the SVM model built with the most important 45 features (selected from a total of 129 features) was the optimal model. For this SVM model, the recognition accuracies of the training set and the testing set were 97.64% and 94.74%, respectively. Semi-supervised models for disease recognition were built based on the 45 effective features that were used for building the optimal SVM model. For the optimal semi-supervised models built with three ratios of labeled to unlabeled samples in the training set, the recognition accuracies of the training set and the testing set were both approximately 80%. The results indicated that image recognition of the four alfalfa leaf diseases can be implemented with high accuracy. Pd supported on various zeolites has been found to be able to adsorb NO at temperatures below 200 °C with high storage efficiency and capacities in a gas feed which simulate diesel engine exhaust conditions. Highly dispersed Pd at the exchange sites of the zeolites are believed to be the active site for the low temperature NO storage. Different framework structures of the zeolites significantly affect not only the NO storage capacity but also the NOx desorption temperature. Super Typhoon Haiyan (1330), which occurred in 2013, is the most powerful typhoon during landfall in the meteorological record. In this study, the temporal and spatial distributions of lightning activity of Haiyan were analyzed by using the lightning data from the World Wide Lightning Location Network, typhoon intensity and position data from the China Meteorological Administration, and horizontal wind data from the ECMWF. Three distinct regions were identified in the spatial distribution of daily average lightning density, with the maxima in the inner core and the minima in the inner rainband. The lightning density in the intensifying stage of Haiyan was greater than that in its weakening stage. During the time when the typhoon intensity measured with maximum sustained wind speed was between 32.7 and 41.4 ms, the storm had the largest lightning density in the inner core, compared with other intensity stages. In contrast to earlier typhoon studies, the eyewall lightning burst out three times. The first two eyewall lightning outbreaks occurred during the period of rapid intensification and before the maximum intensity of the storm, suggesting that the eyewall lightning activity could be used to identify the change in tropical cyclone intensity. The flashes frequently occurred in the inner core, and in the outer rainbands with the black body temperature below 220 K. Combined with the ECMWF wind data, the influences of vertical wind shear (VWS) on the azimuthal distribution of flashes were also analyzed, showing that strong VWS produced downshear left asymmetry of lightning activity in the inner core and downshear right asymmetry in the rainbands. Lightning meteorology focuses on investigating the lightning activities in different types of convective weather systems and the relationship of lightning to the dynamic and microphysical processes in thunderstorms. With the development and application of advanced lightning detection and location technologies, lightning meteorology has been developed into an important interdiscipline between atmospheric electricity and meteorology. This paper mainly reviews the advances of lightning meteorology research in recent years in China from the following five aspects: 1) development of advanced lightning location technology, 2) characteristics of lightning activity in different convective systems, 3) relationship of lightning to the dynamic and microphysical processes in thunderstorms, 4) charge structure of thunderstorms, and 5) lightning data assimilation techniques and application to severe weather forecasting.
