River landscapes have an important function in the landscape in terms of coastal use and the opportunities they provide and they offer different cultural ecosystem services (CES). CES have a significant impact on human welfare in terms of the recreational, aesthetic and spiritual benefits these generate for people. However, the modelling and analysis of these services is more limited versus other ecosystem services due to their intangibility and subjectivity which creates unique challenges. Recently, social media data have provided an opportunity to generate spatial models of CES, offering significant cost and time advantages. Nevertheless, the usefulness of these novel data sources still requires more investigation versus more traditional survey techniques. This study aims to understand the variety of information provided by the images that users upload publicly on a daily basis to social media in a urban/rural setting. Specifically, CES provided by the open and green spaces around the Lower Rhine (Nederrijn) in Wageningen were studied using images uploaded to the social media platform Flickr. A photographic survey was then conducted to compare the utility and accuracy of these new data versus traditional techniques. In doing so, spatial data, ratings and survey evaluations related to the photographs were digitised, classified and integrated with land cover features. The results show that there is a good consistency between the two sources of data and that a wide range of CES measures can be established using these novel data sources. More work is now needed in developing spatial indicators of CES relevant to local assessments, such as the one carried out in this study. Focusing on the Lower Rhine region as a case study, we used the Flickr digital platform to address the following three key questions: (1) What is the spatial distribution of CES? (2) Do users who post on the Flickr platform fully represent the cultural identity of the community and visitors in the region? Within the EU LIFE‐Nature project 'River and floodplain revitalisation Emmericher Ward', three small temporary waters and a former gravel pit were connected by a side channel running parallel to the river Rhine through former groyne fields. The initial status of macrozoobenthos, fish, avifauna, flora, vegetation, and habitats before and their development after implementation of the project's measures were recorded and compared. The monitoring years 2018 and 2019 were exceptionally dry and accompanied by an extremely low runoff in the Rhine and the side channel. These conditions likely affected the development of habitats and species populations in the new side channel. The new side channel showed intensive morphodynamic development and differentiation of its structures. While the more complex vegetation and habitat types appeared as mostly species‐poor initial stages, short‐lived species‐rich pioneer habitats such as annual mud banks in the water exchange area were already established. Two years after the implementation, the benthic invertebrate fauna was still predominantly species‐poor and dominated by neozoans. Occasionally, representatives of the more sensitive EPT fauna (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera) were already detected but were, in general, strongly underrepresented in the main stream. Low colonisation potential, nonpermanent flow, and lack of river wood limit the development of the macrozoobenthos community. The relative abundance of rheophilic fish species increased in the project area and high juvenile fish densities proved the function as a nursery habitat. As pioneer species of riverine landscapes, sand martins and little ringed plovers colonised the new structures already in the first year. The initial state of the side channel represented a typical dynamic pioneer habitat pattern of a sandy lowland river, which was almost absent in the Lower Rhine area. The new habitats were quickly colonised by pioneer flora and fauna, but the potential for more demanding and complex communities was restricted by the poor structural and biological states of the Lower Rhine. Palaeoflood hydraulic modelling is essential for quantifying 'millennial flood' events not covered in the instrumental record. Palaeoflood modelling research has largely focused on one‐dimensional analysis for geomorphologically stable fluvial settings because two‐dimensional analysis for dynamic alluvial settings is time consuming and requires a detailed representation of the past landscape. In this study, we make the step to spatially continuous palaeoflood modelling for a large and dynamic lowland area. We applied advanced hydraulic model simulations (1D–2D coupled set‐up in HEC‐RAS with 950 channel sections and 108 × 103 floodplain grid cells) to quantify the extent and magnitude of past floods in the Lower Rhine river valley and upper delta. As input, we used a high‐resolution terrain reconstruction (palaeo‐DEM) of the area in early mediaeval times, complemented with hydraulic roughness values. After conducting a series of model runs with increasing discharge magnitudes at the upstream boundary, we compared the simulated flood water levels with an inventory of exceeded and non‐exceeded elevations extracted from various geological, archaeological and historical sources. This comparison demonstrated a Lower Rhine millennial flood magnitude of approximately 14,000 m3/s for the Late Holocene period before late mediaeval times. The concept of Regional Industrialization developed by Rainer Fremdling, Toni Pierenkemper and Richard Tilly is based on a small-scale research approach and composes regions according to criteria of homogeneity. This paper argues that the concept is fruitful in regard to textile regions and their analysis in a long-term perspective from proto-industrialization to the 20th century. It examines relevant factors such as capital, labour, raw materials, transfer of capital, technology and knowledge in order to analyse the specific regional path of growth. Especially the role of migrant pioneer entrepreneurs and the institutional-cultural setting, i.e. the state monopolies of the regional silk and velvet producers are addressed. Mechanisation and the factory system were introduced relatively late in comparison to other regions in the wool and cotton branch of textile industry. But innovations in weaving and energy technology diffused rather rapidly in Krefeld, Mönchengladbach and the rural surroundings. The paper shows how the growing textile industry of the left lower Rhine region diversified during the Great Depression of the 1870s-90s and induced forward and backward linkages to the machinery, tool and chemical industries. In all segments of the textile industry in the region (silk, velvet, cotton, wool, synthetics) path dependencies evolved which still have an effect on research institutions and industrial culture today. The Lower Middle Terrace (LMT) in the Lower Rhine area is part of a complex system of fluvial terrace-staircases within the Rhine area and yields an important archive for periods of fluvial aggradation driven by climate and tectonics. The so far existing chronostratigraphy of the Lower Middle Terrace is mainly based on geomorphological aspects, petrography and age estimates of cover sediments. Hence, there is a need to establish a more reliable chronological framework for the aggradation period of the fluvial sand and gravel related to the LMT itself. Here, we present first luminescence dating results from the LMT site at Brühl, southern Lower Rhine Embayment. Due to the saturation of the quartz OSL signal, luminescence measurements concentrated on the pIRIR290 dating approach. The determined feldspar-pIRIR290 luminescence ages highlight that the LMT at Brühl seems to be correlated with the penultimate (Saalian) glaciation. The deposits yield ages ranging from 140 ± 9 to 147 ± 11 ka and illustrate increased fluvial activity during the penultimate glacial maximum (MIS 6). These first luminescence age estimates should motivate to further systematically study the chronological framework of the LMT also at additional sites of the Rhine system to unravel the aggradation history of the river Rhine in more detail. Even in Roman times, River Rhine had a major economical and political relevance. Although the importance of the Rhine to Romans is conversant, information on hydrological conditions is poor. To overcome this deficit, historical sources are analysed. Alongside Middle and Lower Rhine, between the city of Bingen and the German–Dutch boundary, 17 Roman settlements, camps or forts are known. Archaeological excavations of relevant buildings give information on historical water stages, discharges, hydrological extreme events or the size of riverbed. The Roman bridge over River Rhine at the city of Cologne was partly conserved through modern times. A detailed analysis of bridge construction allows the quantitative reconstruction of mean discharge. Beside Roman buildings, documentary sources are of great advantage. Several Roman historians documented geographical events like weather conditions or hydrological extreme events. After careful review of sources, writings of Tacitus are applied for a quantitative discharge reconstruction of an extreme drought in 69 AD. Tacitus describes a ship running aground due to shallow water and a battle between Roman and German troops in the riverbed. Relating to information given by Tacitus, a simplified cross section can be reconstructed. Based on the Manning equation, a possible range of discharge is estimated. Results of research show a significant lower mean discharge in the first century AD on Middle and Lower Rhine compared to recent mean discharge. In combination of a wider channel, the Romans had to deal with minor water depth, which could impede navigation. Roman times mean water stage of Lower Rhine was about two metres higher compared to modern times, which shows a significant incision of the riverbed over the last 2000 years, whereas Roman time mean water stage at Middle Rhine was lower due to minor discharge. In order to assess the impact of seasonality versus connectivity on the ecological quality of the Lower Rhine river-floodplain habitats, we studied the seasonal variation in diversity and species assemblages of caddis larvae by monthly sampling of the littoral zone of four water bodies over a lateral connectivity gradient. Seasonal variation in diversity showed a general pattern in these floodplain habitats and could be related to caddisfly life history and habitat preferences. Despite this seasonal variation, caddis larvae species assemblages in the water bodies appeared to be rather stable and could be firmly related to the position of their habitats over the connectivity gradient. The main channel (lotic habitat) was clearly separated from the lentic water bodies, and also the sparsely vegetated water bodies from the well-vegetated water bodies. It is concluded that the impact of connectivity, and related parameters such as stream velocity and vegetation coverage, outweighed the impact of season on the caddis larvae assemblages. A Chézy-based hydraulic model was run to estimate the magnitude of extreme floods of Middle Holocene age in the Lower Rhine Valley (Germany). Input parameters were gathered from the field and literature, and used in ten scenarios to calculate a best guess estimate for the minimum size of extreme floods. These events have been registered as slackwater deposits on elevated terrace levels and in a palaeochannel fill. The modelled minimum discharge is 13,250 m³ sec-1 for a Middle Holocene flood with an estimated recurrence interval between 1,250 and 2,500 years. A sensitivity analysis on different input parameters enables evaluation of factors which cause the relatively large range in modelled discharges. Understanding the origin of uncertainties in modelled discharges is important for making geologically based calculations of palaeoflood magnitudes important in modern flood frequency analyses, which generally lack information on the magnitudes of rare events. Climate change may well lead to an increased risk of river floods in the Netherlands. However, the impacts of changes in water management on river floods are larger, either enhancing or reducing flood risks. Therefore, the abilities of water-management authorities to learn that climate and river flows are changing, and to recognize and act upon the implications, are of crucial importance. At the same time, water-management authorities respond to other trends, such as the democratization of decision making, which alter their ability to react to climate change. These complex interactions are illustrated with changes in river flood risk management for the Rhine and the Meuse in the Netherlands over the last 50 years. A scenario study is used to seek insight into the question of whether current water-management institutions and their likely successors are capable of dealing with plausible future flood risks. The scenarios show that new and major infrastructure is needed to keep flood risks at their current level. Such a structural solution to future flood risks is feasible, but requires considerable political will and institutional reform, both for planning and implementation. A few years after it invaded, the amphipod Corophium curvispinum Sars appeared to be the most numerous macroinvertebrate species in the River Rhine. From 1987 to 1991 the densities of this species on the stones of groins in the Lower Rhine at a depth of 0.5 m increased from 2 to 200000 specimens per m. In the Lower Rhine and its branches the densities of C. curvispinum increased with increasing current velocities and with increasing water depths. So far, a maximum population density of 750000 specimens per m has been found in the Lower Rhine, which is many times the densities recorded elsewhere. Population parameters, densities and distribution of C. curvispinum were studied in the Lower Rhine and its branches, using artificial substrates and sampling stones from groins. The success of this immigrant is related to its competitive strategy, which shows several aspects of a r-strategy. In addition, the heavily eutrophicated Lower Rhine provides abundant food (phytoplankton, suspended organic matter) for this opportunistic filter-feeder. The increased salinity and water temperatures in the Lower Rhine resulting from industrial discharges have contributed to the current success of this southern species originating in brackish waters. The very high densities of C. curvispinum might have an enormous impact on the river ecosystem by changing food webs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
