BACKGROUND: To investigate the use of calcineurin inhibitors (CNIs) in pregnant Japanese women and to evaluate their safety in infants. METHODS: Data were extracted from the claims database of the Japan Medical Data Center. The prevalence of CNIs was evaluated 180 days before pregnancy onset, during pregnancy, and within180-days post partum. We investigated the characteristics of the infants, including the presence of major malformations and their diagnoses, for 1 year after birth. RESULTS: A total of 91,865 pregnancies in 80,049 women were included. Fifty-three women were prescribed CNIs between 180-day before pregnancy onset and 180-day postpartum; 35 of the 53 women were prescribed the drugs during pregnancy, and 10 of their infants were born preterm. Three were diagnosed with major congenital malformations, such as patent ductus arteriosus. Six preterm infants presented with infant respiratory distress syndrome. The van der Waals compound Xe(N2)2 with a C15 Laves structure was successfully synthesised at pressures greater than 4.4 GPa. We found that, at 10 GPa, the structure reversibly transforms from a cubic to a tetragonal phase. Further compression results in changes of Xe–N compound, which could result in the enhancement of orbital interactions between the xenon and nitrogen atoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have proposed a cell-based design methodology for SFQ logic circuits based on a binary decision diagram (BDD) and implemented a BDD SFQ standard cell library using a Hypres Nb process. In this design methodology, any logic function can be implemented by connecting binary switches. Since the circuits are dual rail logic and don't need a global clock, difficulty in the timing design is reduced considerably. In our cell-based design approach, the cell library is composed of only five kinds of basic cells, whose circuit parameters are optimized so as to remove the inter-cell interaction. In the layout level, the cells have the identical size so that circuits can be implemented by simply embedding the basic cells. In this study we have performed an on-chip high-speed test of the BDD SFQ logic circuits. The test system consists of two four-bit data-driven self-timed (DDST) shift registers with a ladder type clock generator. We have confirmed 12 GHz operations of the BDD SFQ logic circuit. An eight-bit SFQ processor has been designed and some key components have been tested to confirm feasibility of the large-scale SFQ digital circuit. The designed processor is composed of a one-bit ALU, two eight-bit registers with local clock generators, an instruction register, a five-bit program counter, a state controller, and a 32-byte register file. A bit-serial architecture and a distributed local clock architecture, where each register has its own local clock generator, have been employed in order to increase the local clock frequency. The target clock frequency is 16 GHz and 10 GHz for the NEC 2.5 kA/cm² and Hypres 1 kA/cm² Nb processes. On the circuit design level, we have used a data-driven self-timed architecture and a binary decision diagram, which reduce the timing design difficulty in high frequency operation. The processor, which contains 7,300 Josephson junctions, has been designed by using a cell-based design methodology with the assistance of a top-down CAD environment. We have successfully tested some important circuit blocks, including a one-bit ALU, eight-bit registers, and a demultiplexer for register files. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Serum angiotensin-converting enzyme activity was significantly elevated in 21 patients with hyperthyroidism (65 +/- 18 U/mL) as compared with levels in healthy control subjects (30 +/- 9 U/mL). In eight patients treated with thionamide drugs, the enzyme activities decreased to a normal range as thyroid hormone concentrations returned to euthyroid levels. When two patients became hyperthyroid due to an insufficient maintenance dose of antithyroid drugs, the increase in the serum thyroid hormone concentration was followed by the re-elevation of serum angiotensin-converting enzyme levels with a time lag of about 2 weeks. Levels of this enzyme are increased reflecting the elevated serum thyroid hormone levels in hyperthyroidism. In the developing central nervous system, cell departure from the apical surface is the initial and fundamental step to form the 3D, organized architecture. Both delamination of differentiating cells and repositioning of progenitors to generate outer radial glial cells (oRGs) contribute to mammalian neocortical expansion; however, a comprehensive understanding of their mechanisms is lacking. Here, we demonstrate that Lzts1, a molecule associated with microtubule components, promotes both cell departure events. In neuronally committed cells, Lzts1 functions in apical delamination by altering apical junctional organization. In apical RGs (aRGs), Lzts1 expression is variable, depending on Hes1 expression levels. According to its differential levels, Lzts1 induces diverse RG behaviors: planar division, oblique divisions of aRGs that generate oRGs, and their mitotic somal translocation. Loss-of-function of lzts1 impairs all these cell departure processes. Thus, Lzts1 functions as a master modulator of cellular dynamics, contributing to increasing complexity of the cerebral architecture during evolution. Outer radial glial cells (oRGs) are undifferentiated cells that divide in the subventricular zone during neurodevelopment, but the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Both 12-O-tetradecanoyl-phorbol-1-acetate and teleocidin B stimulated the secretion of human chorionic gonadotropin by cultured choriocarcinoma cells. These tumor promoters also stimulated production of progesterone in the cells. However, the 2 tumor promoters did not exert a marked effect on the cellular binding of epidermal growth factor that also had a stimulatory effect on production of these hormones. However, the increase in cell number was not accompanied by a proportional increase in the levels of α-fetoprotein of the culture media.
