To truly understand the hydrologic and erosive processes that occur at the catchment scale regarding land use and soil management changes, intensive monitoring is required over a long period. Variables such as precipitation, flow rate and suspended sediment concentration are the fundamentals needed to estimate sediment yield (SY). However, in order to shed more light on the effects of soil management changes on SY, traditional hydrologic monitoring techniques can be paired with sediment tracing to identify sediment sources. In addition, mathematical models that predict erosion and SY can also help understand the dynamics of erosion and deposition between the hillslope and stream channel. Given the above, this article provides an overview of almost 20 years of monitoring (2002–2021) in the Arvorezinha experimental catchment (1.23 km2) located on the edge of the Brazilian meridional plateau in southern Brazil, which is subject to extreme erosion due to a combination of factors related to intensive agriculture and steep slopes. The catchment was selected as a study site to evaluate the effects of land‐use changes and soil conservation management on hydrology and SY. The text reviews the history of the study, synthesizes the main results and describes the evolution of the monitoring techniques used while giving special attention to the fingerprinting approach. In addition, the article discusses the importance of catchment‐scale studies for teaching, generating technical‐scientific knowledge and fostering collaboration between national and international research groups. Purpose: Erosion and its spatial distribution in three agricultural headwater catchments were assessed in the border of the volcanic plateau in Southern Brazil. We analyzed terrain, hydrological processes, and land use influence to provide a comprehensive assessment of the catchments' sensitivity to erosion. Methods: Topographic attributes were acquired from a digital elevation map, WaterSed model was parameterized to simulate runoff, diffuse erosion, and sediment yield, and sediment source contributions were estimated using sediment fingerprinting based on near-infrared spectroscopy. Results: According to the modeled results, areas covered by crop fields, grasslands, and those adjacent to the drainage network are the most sensitive to erosion. Short distances from the source to the river network and the occurrence of high magnitude rainfall events (80 mm) promoted increases in connectivity for runoff/sediment transfer. Erosion simulations show that areas of low infiltration, such as unpaved roads, were important runoff generators during lower volume rainfall events (25 mm). Sediment fingerprinting provided satisfactory results to quantify the contributions of unpaved roads to sediment (~ 39%). Topsoil and stream channels were also significant sediment sources for the set of analyzed samples, corresponding to average contributions of 38 and 23%, respectively. Conclusion: Areas sharing geomorphological similarities did not lead to similar sediment contributions. Vegetation cover controlled erosion in topographically sensitive areas. Unpaved roads provide a significant sediment source, followed by topsoil and stream channels. The complementary results provide useful insights to better coordinate planning environmental conservation strategies in these fragile landscapes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

No‐till (NT) is a soil management system designed to protect soil resources from water erosion and provide numerous benefits compared to conventional tillage through the increase of organic matter inputs into the soil. However, NT in isolation is not sufficient to control erosion processes caused by an excessive production of surface runoff. This study evaluated soil losses on agricultural hillslopes under no‐till characterized by contrasted water, soil, and crop management conditions. To this end, water and soil losses were monitored between 2014 and 2018 at two scales, including four macroplots (0.6 ha; 27 events) and two paired zero‐order catchments (2.4 ha; 63 events). The resulting dataset covered a wide range of rainfall conditions that occurred in contrasted soil, crop, and runoff management conditions. Hyetographs, hydrographs, and sedigraphs were constructed, and these data were used to evaluate the impact of management on sediment yields, including that of terraces, scarification, and phytomass on sediment yield. The installation of terraces reduced sediment yield by 58.7%, mainly through surface runoff control. Crop management including an increased phytomass input efficiently controlled soil losses (63%), although it did not reduce runoff volume and peak flow. In contrast, scarification had no impact on runoff and soil losses. The current research demonstrated the need to combine the installation of terraces and leaving a high amount of phytomass on the soil to control surface runoff and erosion and reduce sediment yield. The current research therefore reinforces the relevance of the monitoring strategy conducted at the scale of macroplots and zero‐order catchments to evaluate the impact of contrasted water, soil, and crop management methods and select the most effective conservation agriculture practices. No‐till (NT) is a conservation system that improves the hydrological regime of agricultural slopes by providing greater surface protection and benefits to the physical and hydrological properties of soils. However, the isolated use of NT is not enough to control runoff and its associated degradation processes. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the runoff of agricultural slopes under NT under different runoff control conditions by monitoring 63 rainfall events in two 2.4‐ha zero‐order catchments and 27 rainfall events in four 0.6‐ha macroplots. The catchments are paired and similar in terms of the type of soil and relief, but different regarding the presence of terraces. The macroplots have different soil and crop management systems. By using monitoring techniques, the hyetographs and hydrographs revealed the influence of the different types of management on the catchments and macroplots and allowed rainfall characteristics, runoff volume, runoff coefficients, water infiltration, peak runoff, response times, and curve number to be analysed. The terraces positively affected the NT and controlled runoff and related variables, in addition to infiltration significantly increasing and runoff reducing in the terraced catchment. All the hydrological information assessed pointed to the positive effects provided by the presence of the terraces. The results in the macroplots showed that high amounts of phytomass and/or chiselling do not control runoff and its correlated variables in medium and high magnitude events. The study concludes by underlining the need for additional measures to control runoff (terraces), even in areas under NT and with high phytomass production. Additionally, the study emphasizes the importance of monitoring at the catchment scale to better understand the hydrological behaviour of agricultural areas and provide the necessary parameters to effectively control runoff. Soil thickness and residence time are regulated by a dynamic interplay between soil formation and lateral transport of soil particles and solutes. To unravel this interplay and infer patterns and rates of chemical weathering, soil physical and chemical properties can be used. Here, we present an integrated approach combining numerical modeling with field measurements to assess the impact of slope gradient on soil thickness and chemical weathering at a regional scale. We first perform a number of synthetic model runs simulating soil formation, weathering, erosion, and deposition, which show that soil thickness and weathering degree decline with increasing slope gradient. We then evaluate how those functional relationships compare to soil‐landscape data observed in the field. Soils are sampled at 100 midslope positions under varying slope gradient. The weathering degree is determined using three chemical weathering indices: ratio of iron oxides to total iron (Fed/Fet), chemical index of alteration (CIA), and total reserve in bases (TRB). Finally, we calibrate the Be2D model to our field data to constrain soil residence times and chemical weathering rates. The modeled weathering rates decrease with increasing soil residence time and decreasing slope gradient. The application of the soil‐landscape evolution model in Southern Brazil shows that weathering rates can vary up to 2 orders of magnitude and depend on hillslope gradient. Notwithstanding model limitations and data uncertainties, we demonstrate the potential of an integrated approach, where field data and numerical modeling are integrated to unravel the timescale of soil weathering along transport over hillslopes. Plain Language Summary: By combining a numerical soil‐landscape evolution model with field data we assess the impact of topography on soil thickness and chemical weathering degrees and rates. Chemical weathering degrees are indicative of the extent of chemical weathering of the soil mantle, whereas weathering rates indicate how fast the chemical composition is changing over time. We show that on steep slopes soils are thinner and have a lower weathering degree compared to gentle slopes. The observed difference in soil weathering is related to the soil residence time, which is constrained by combining field measurements with a numerical model. Soils developed on basalt and dacite‐rhyolite rocks in a subtropical climate regime have soil residence times ranging between ~20 and 1700 kyr. Soils on steep slopes are younger and characterized by weathering rates that can be twice as high as for older soils on gentle slopes. Integrating field data in soil‐landscape evolution models can help to unravel the interplay between topography, soil erosion, and weathering in soil‐mantled landscapes. Abstract: Land‐use/cover change (LUCC), and more specifically deforestation and multidecadal agriculture, is one of the various controlling factors of water fluxes at the hillslope or catchment scale. We investigated the impact of LUCC on water pathways and stream stormflow generation processes in a subtropical region in southern Brazil. We monitored, sampled and analysed stream water, pore water, subsurface water, and rainwater for dissolved silicon concentration (DSi) and 18O/16O (δ18O) signature to identify contributing sources to the streamflow under forest and under agriculture. Both forested and agricultural catchments were highly responsive to rainfall events in terms of discharge and shallow groundwater level. DSi versus δ18O scatter plots indicated that for both land‐use types, two run‐off components contributed to the stream discharge. The presence of a dense macropore network, combined with the presence of a compact and impeding B‐horizon, led to rapid subsurface flow in the forested catchment. In the agricultural catchment, the rapid response to rainfall was mostly due to surface run‐off. A 2‐component isotopic hydrograph separation indicated a larger contribution of rainfall water to run‐off during rainfall event in the agricultural catchments. We attributed this higher contribution to a decrease in topsoil hydraulic conductivity associated with agricultural practices. The chemical signature of the old water component in the forested catchment was very similar to that of the shallow groundwater and the pore soil water: It is therefore likely that the shallow groundwater was the main source of old water. This is not the case in the agricultural catchments where the old water component had a much higher DSi concentration than the shallow groundwater and the soil pore water. As the agricultural catchments were larger, this may to some extent simply be a scale effect. However, the higher water yields under agriculture and the high DSi concentration observed in the old water under agriculture suggest a significant contribution of deep groundwater to catchment run‐off under agriculture, suggesting that LUCC may have significant effects on weathering rates and patterns. Purpose: Soil degradation is a widespread problem and currently one of the biggest challenges in modern-day agriculture. The partial adoption of conservation agriculture, such as no-till management, does not provide adequate erosion control, and the hydrology dynamics on hillslopes under no-till management remain poorly quantified. This study examines the hydrology of agricultural hillslopes under no-till management, with and without terraces in southern Brazil.Materials and methods: Water and soil losses were measured in two paired, zero-order catchments (2.4 ha) under no-till cultivation, with and without broad-based retention terraces. Rainfall, surface runoff, and suspended sediment concentrations were monitored during major rainfall events. Analysis of hydrographs and sedigraphs was used to derive the peak flow, runoff duration, and sediment yield values and the hysteresis between surface runoff and the suspended sediment concentration during different seasons.Results and discussion: The results show higher soil and water losses in the catchment without terraces. Terracing reduced peak flow rates by 79%, sediment yield from 0.44 to 0.16 t ha−1, and the total surface runoff from 3943 (126 mm) to 855 m3 (36 mm) during 31 events over 16 months. The no-till system without terraces was unable to adequately control surface runoff and soil erosion. Surface runoff and sediment yield were higher under no-till without terraces than under no-till with terraces.Conclusions: The difference in terms of surface runoff volume and sediment yield indicates an important difference in the hydrology and soil erosion in the catchment without terraces, which is represented by high-surface-runoff coefficient values observed during the rainfall-runoff events. The short lag time and steep rising limb of the hydrographs indicate high-surface-runoff responsivity to rainfall in no-till without terraces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Sediments produced from eroding cultivated land can cause on‐site and off‐site effects that cause considerable economic and social impacts. Despite the importance of soil conservation practices (SCP) for the control of soil erosion and improvements in soil hydrological functions, limited information is available regarding the effects of SCP on sediment yield (SY) at the catchment scale. This study aimed to investigate the long‐term relationships between SY and land use, soil management, and rainfall in a small catchment. To determine the effects of anthropogenic and climatic factors on SY, rainfall, streamflow, and suspended sediment concentration were monitored at 10‐min intervals for 14 years (2002–2016), and the land use and soil management changes were surveyed annually. Using a statistical procedure to separate the SY effects of climate, land use, and soil management, we observed pronounced temporal effects of land use and soil management changes on SY. During the first 2 years (2002–2004), the land was predominantly cultivated with tobacco under a traditional tillage system (no cover crops and ploughed soil) using animal traction. In that period, the SY reached approximately 400 t·km−2·year−1. From 2005 to 2009, a soil conservation programme introduced conservation tillage and winter cover crops in the catchment area, which lowered the SY to 50 t·km−2·year−1. In the final period (2010–2016), the SCP were partially abandoned by farmers, and reforested areas increased, resulting in an SY of 150 t·km−2·year−1. A general method is proposed which measures the increase in uncertainty when sampling effort is reduced in sediment fingerprinting. The method gives quantitative measures of how reduced sampling of material in one of the source areas, and/or of suspended sediment in streams, increases the uncertainties in the proportions of sediment contributed from the sources. Because the proportions of sediment contributed by the source areas must add to one, standard errors of the estimated proportions cannot be used as the usual measures of uncertainty: the paper uses instead the volume of the joint 95% confidence region for the estimated proportions. The paper shows how the uncertainty in this volume changes as numbers of suspended sediment samples, and the numbers of samples collected from cropped fields, are reduced by successive steps from 24 ( 20, in the case of cropped fields) to 16, 12, 8, 4 and 2 samples. As expected, uncertainty increases rapidly as the number of samples - whether of suspended sediment or from cropped fields - is reduced drastically. The pattern of increasing uncertainty is similar both for reductions in suspended sediment sampling, and for reduced sampling from cropped areas. When the number of suspended sediment samples, and the number of samples from cropped fields, are reduced to the same values, the increase in uncertainty from fewer suspended sediment samples was always slightly greater than the increased uncertainty from the reduced sampling of cropped areas, although this finding took no account of differences in the costs of field sampling and laboratory analysis. The article presents the study which explores the relationship between suspended sediment concentration (SSC) and turbidity for a small rural catchment in Brazil. It evaluates two calibration methods by comparing the SSC estimates obtained from the calibrated turbidity readings with direct measurements using the soil taxonomy system of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The first method is derived by relating the turbidity reading to simultaneous measurements of concentration obtained from SSC samples collected from the vicinity of the turbidity probe during flood events, while the second is based on the readings obtained from the turbidity meter when the probe immersed in samples using soils collected from the catchment. The study shows the efficiency of the first method over the second.
