Identifying road obstacles hidden from the driver's field of view can ensure road safety in transportation. Current driver assistance systems such as 2D head‐up displays are limited to the projection area on the windshield of the car. An augmented reality holographic point cloud video projection system is developed to display objects aligned with real‐life objects in size and distance within the driver's field of view. Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) point cloud data collected with a 3D laser scanner is transformed into layered 3D replay field objects consisting of 400 k points. GPU‐accelerated computing generated real‐time holograms 16.6 times faster than the CPU processing time. The holographic projections are obtained with a Spatial Light Modulator (SLM) (3840×2160 px) and virtual Fresnel lenses, which enlarged the driver's eye box to 25 mm × 36 mm. Real‐time scanned road obstacles from different perspectives provide the driver a full view of risk factors such as generated depth in 3D mode and the ability to project any scanned object from different angles in 360°. The 3D holographic projection technology allows for maintaining the driver's focus on the road instead of the windshield and enables assistance by projecting road obstacles hidden from the driver's field of view. Chronic wound monitoring can provide personalized pathophysiological information for wound management and treatment. Continuously monitoring the wound milieu via the holographic pH sensor can reflect the wound healing processes. However, the integration with wearable devices is hindered by its inherently restricted interrogation angle dependency within 5°. Herein, a ball bearing‐based double photopolymerization method is developed to fabricate holographic pH sensors with a broader interrogation angle range of 15°–60° in wound exudates. The fabricated holographic pH sensor is then integrated with the flexible ultrathin polyurethane substrate, which replays a total Bragg peak shift of approximately 150 nm with physiological pH changes from 7.00 to 8.75. The conformable holographic pH sensing bandages demonstrate the ability to quantify the pH value under various bending manipulations, simulating the mounting on the body surface. The reversibility in artificial wound exudate demonstrates the durability and capability of real‐time pH monitoring in the wound milieu with minimal effect on the replay wavelength. The addition of electrolytes, albumin, urea, uric acid, lactate, and glucose does not interfere with the readout over the physiological pH range of wound exudates. The obtained conformable holographic sensing bandage benefits the wound healing process monitoring through colorimetric interrogation at point‐of‐care (POC) settings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Over the past decade, there has been a rising interest in utilizing functionalized porous polymers for sensor applications. By incorporating functional groups into nanostructured materials like hydrogels, nanosheets, and nanopores, exciting new opportunities have emerged for biomarker detection. The ability of functionalized polymers to undergo physical changes and deformations makes them perfect for modulating optical signals. This chemical mechanism enables the creation of biocompatible sensors for in situ biomarker measurement. Here a comprehensive overview of the current publication trends is provided in functionalized polymers, encompassing functional groups that can induce measurable physical deformations. It explores various materials categorized based on their detection targets, which include proteins, carbohydrates, ions, and deoxyribonucleic acid. Holographic sensors are optical devices capable of tuning reflection wavelength, dependent upon nanostructured variations in refractive index. Computational modelling is utilized to simulate the recording and swelling characteristics of developed doubly photopolymerized (DP) holographic sensors. The holographic devices simplify fabrication processes, reduce financial costs, and improve biocompatibility. A holographic grating is achieved through in situ photopolymerization of a highly crosslinked polymer to produce nanostructured refractive index modulation. The unique swelling characteristics DP holographic sensors possess necessitate the development of system‐specific computational modelling. Hydrogel parameters, including film thickness, refractive index change, layer number, and external medium refractive index are examined for their effect on reflection spectra. Optimized computational models are utilized to study the effect of differential swelling rates of individual layer spacings on sensor response, indicating an idealized reduction in a swelling of 50% for the highly crosslinked region. A 2D photonic crystal geometry with additional periodicity is developed, to inform further sensor design opportunities. Inspection of pipeline infrastructure is an essential part of pipeline integrity management to prevent from leakage and flow reduction is of great importance in water, gas, and oil distribution. However, current methods are limited in low resolution and low accuracy that fail to 3D reconstructions of pipelines. In this work, a theoretical laser propagation model based on a free-form laser profilometry method is established, and a fully functional laser system that incorporates a conic mirror within an integrated optical system containing all the elements necessary to retrieve the displacement information. The developed optical device exhibit high resolution, high accuracy, and high acquisition speed comparing with current technologies. Furthermore, the device can be completely sealed to be protected from the pipeline environment. This work paves the path towards autonomous laser scanners for underwater pipeline inspection. Abstract: Dynamic structural coloration in Tmesisternus isabellae beetle elytra is a unique example of Bragg stack‐based wavelength tuning in response to external stimuli. The underlying principles could guide the design of quantitative optical stimuli‐responsive polymers. Existing nanofabrication techniques to create such materials are costly, time‐consuming, and require high expertise. This study reports a nanofabrication method to produce slanted Bragg stack structures in poly(acrylamide‐co‐poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate) hydrogel films by combining laser interference lithography and silver halide chemistry in a cost‐effective and rapid process (≈10 min). The Bragg stacks consist of silver bromide nanocrystal multilayers having a lattice spacing of ≈200 nm. Upon broadband light illumination, the Bragg stacks diffract a narrow‐band peak at 520 nm at ≈10° with respect to the normal incidence. The lattice spacing of the hydrogel films can be modulated by external stimuli to shift the Bragg peak for dynamic quantitative measurements. To demonstrate the utility of this method, the Bragg stacks are functionalized with phenylboronic acid molecules. Bragg peak shift analysis allows reversible glucose sensing within a physiological dynamic range (0.0–20.0 mmol L−1) having a sensitivity of 0.2 mmol L−1. Abstract: Optical waveguides allow propagating light through biological tissue in optogenetics and photomedicine applications. However, achieving efficient light delivery to deep tissues for long‐term implantation has been limited with solid‐state optical fibers. Here, a method is created to rapidly fabricate flexible, functionalized soft polymer optical fibers (SPOFs) coupled with silica fibers. A step‐index core/cladded poly(acrylamide‐co‐poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate)/Ca alginate SPOF is fabricated through free‐radical polymerization in a mold. The SPOF is integrated with a solid‐state silica fiber coupler for efficient light delivery. The cladded SPOF shows ≈1.5‐fold increase in light propagation compared to the noncladded fiber. The optical loss of the SPOF is measured as 0.6 dB cm−1 at the bending angle of 70° and 0.28 dB cm−1 through a phantom tissue. The SPOF (inner Ø = 200 µm) integrated with a 21 gauge needle (inner Ø = 514 µm) is inserted within a porcine tissue. The intensity of light decreases ≈60%, as the SPOF is implanted as deep as 2 cm. Doped with fluorescent dye and gold nanoparticles, the SPOF fiber exhibits yellow‐red and red illumination. Living cells can also be incorporated within the SPOF with viability. Abstract: A new type of metalens with the capability to selectively focus narrowband light is reported at different focal planes depending on polarization. Two zone planes with two different focal lengths are spatially multiplexed and encoded in the subwavelength regime with arrays of orthogonal silver nanostructures, which are designed to exhibit strong wavelength‐ and polarization‐dependent scattering profiles. Using this principle, imaging under white‐light illumination with independent focal planes is experimentally demonstrated for each polarization at the narrowband resonant wavelength. Furthermore, each focal plane can be dynamically controlled with an output polarizer. In contrast to conventional refractive and diffractive optical elements, functional metalenses allow additional control over wavelength and polarization properties of light for a wide range of applications. The development of nanostructures that can be reversibly arranged and assembled into 3D patterns may enable optical tunability. However, current dynamic recording materials such as photorefractive polymers cannot be used to store information permanently while also retaining configurability. Here, we describe the synthesis and optimization of a silver nanoparticle doped poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-methacrylic acid) recording medium for reversibly recording 3D holograms. We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate organizing nanoparticles into 3D assemblies in the recording medium using optical forces produced by the gradients of standing waves. The nanoparticles in the recording medium are organized by multiple nanosecond laser pulses to produce reconfigurable slanted multilayer structures. We demonstrate the capability of producing rewritable optical elements such as multilayer Bragg diffraction gratings, 1D photonic crystals, and 3D multiplexed optical gratings. We also show that 3D virtual holograms can be reversibly recorded. Digital holography requires arrays of small reconfigurable elements to achieve complex reconstruction of the hologram with common systems based on pixels utilizing liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) technology. The backplane of a typical pixel element is potentially underutilized and thus relatively large physical areas exist in which information can be stored and exploited to give additional functionality to pixel elements. Polarisation and wavelength dependent optical properties can be achieved in small areas using the plasmonic effects of optical antennae. The integration of LCs with optical antennae-based plasmonic holograms allows active modulation of the far field pattern. The work here demonstrates the concept that conventional LCoS pixel elements can be greatly enhanced with the integration of plasmonic holograms, composed of optical antennae patterned on the surface, giving rise to new levels of modulation capability for holographic pixel elements. Using LCs, polarisation dependent effects in plasmonic holograms can be switched. We report numerical analyses of Bragg diffraction by Denisyuk reflection holograms recorded by a high-energy pulsed laser. An intensity threshold must be passed to pattern a multilayer reflection and transmission hologram, which exhibits a nonlinear fringe structure. Numerical evaluations are provided for the laser light intensity, readout diffraction offset angle, transmission of the layer, and thickness of the polymer matrix during hologram recording. A non-sinusoidal surface pattern is formed at the top of the multilayer structure, and its effect on the diffraction properties of the structure becomes significant when the recording tilt angle is increased. This work presents an original approach to create holograms based on the optical scattering of plasmonic nanoparticles. By analogy to the diffraction produced by the scattering of atoms in X-ray crystallography, we show that plasmonic nanoparticles can produce a wave-front reconstruction when they are sampled on a diffractive plane. By applying this method, all of the scattering characteristics of the nanoparticles are transferred to the reconstructed field. Hence, we demonstrate that a narrow-band reconstruction can be achieved for direct white light illumination on an array of plasmonic nanoparticles. Furthermore, multicolor capabilities are shown with minimal cross-talk by multiplexing different plasmonic nanoparticles at subwavelength distances. The holograms were fabricated from a single subwavelength thin film of silver and demonstrate that the total amount of binary information stored in the plane can exceed the limits of diffraction and that this wavelength modulation can be detected optically in the far field. A fundamental study of visible diffraction effects from patterned graphene layers is presented. By patterning graphene into optical gratings, visible diffraction from graphene is experimentally measured as a function of the number of layers and visible wavelengths. A practical application of these effects is also presented, by demonstrating an optical hologram based on graphene. A high resolution (pixel size 400 nm) intensity hologram is fabricated which, in response to incident laser light, generates a visible image. These findings suggest that visible diffraction in graphene can find practical application in holograms and should also be considered during the design and characterisation of graphene‐based optical applications. Nanotube forest behaves as highly absorbent material when they are randomly placed in sub-wavelength scales. Furthermore, it is possible to create diffractive structures when these bulks are patterned in a substrate. Here, we introduce an alternative to fabricate intensity holograms by patterning fringes of nanotube forest on a substrate. The result is an efficient intensity hologram that is not restricted to sub-wavelength patterning. Both the theoretical and experimental analysis was performed with good agreement. We report the remarkable diffraction effects produced from circular patterned arrays of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Highly ordered circular arrays of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (with inter-nanotube spacings of 633 nm) display optical dispersion effects similar to compact discs. These arrays display remarkable diffraction patterns in the far field which are spatially continuous. High quality diffraction patterns were obtained experimentally which are in excellent agreement with the theoretical calculations. The achieved continuous diffraction patterns pave the way towards the utilization of engineered carbon nanotube arrays in applications like three dimensional holograms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
