Background: Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is a rare disease that causes maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide. However, the etiology of PPCM is still unclear, and the rate of recovery varies between patients. Understanding the genetic factors underpinning PPCM may provide new insights into its pathogenesis. Methods: This genetic study screened six patients with severe PPCM and their family members using a panel of 204 genes associated with inherited cardiomyopathy. Results: The six probands progressed to severe cardiac dysfunction during follow-up, with a low left ventricular ejection fraction of <30% and a significant increase in left ventricular end-diastolic diameter. Genetic analysis showed that four of the six probands had pathogenic mutations. No specific mutation was identified in the other two probands. Further screening of the probands' families identified that eight family members shared the same mutation with their probands. The total positive genetic mutation rate was 46% (12/26). Among those with genetic mutations, women who had pregnancies showed symptoms of heart disease. Conclusions: For PPCM patients with a genetic predisposition, pregnancy may exert pathogenic effects in terms of disease initiation and progression. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive neurodegeneration disease that causes photoreceptor demise and vision impairments. In AMD pathogenesis, the primary death of retinal neurons always leads to the activation of resident microglia. The migration of activated microglia to the ongoing retinal lesion and their morphological transformation from branching to ameboid-like are recognized as hallmarks of AMD pathogenesis. Activated microglia send signals to Müller cells and promote them to react correspondingly to damaging stimulus. Müller cells are a type of neuroglia cells that maintain the normal function of retinal neurons, modulating innate inflammatory responses, and stabilize retinal structure. Activated Müller cells can accelerate the progression of AMD by damaging neurons and blood vessels. Therefore, the crosstalk between microglia and Müller cells plays a homeostatic role in maintaining the retinal environment, and this interaction is complicatedly modulated. In particular, the mechanism of mutual regulation between the two glia populations is complex under pathological conditions. This paper reviews recent findings on the crosstalk between microglia and Müller glia during AMD pathology process, with special emphasis on its therapeutic potentials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Graphene oxide (GO) exhibited notable efficacy in adsorbing diverse contaminants. However, considering the economic constraints and the challenges in applying GO in natural environments, the prospect of coating it onto a three-dimensional framework presents a promising avenue for expanding its applications. In this study, abundant silica sands, which possess minimal adsorption capabilities, were employed as the framework for surface coating with GO. Batch and column tests, along with spectral induced polarization (SIP) monitoring, were conducted to investigate the adsorption process and the interaction mechanisms of GO–sand composite (GOS) with typical contaminants found in landfill-contaminated groundwater, i.e., Pb2+, fulvic acid (FA), and NH4+. The geochemical findings indicated that GOS exhibited the highest effectiveness in adsorbing and retarding Pb2+ (7.49 mg/g; Rd = 2.2), and the least effectiveness on NH4+ (0.37 mg/g; Rd = 1.4) under flow-through conditions. The SIP signals successfully revealed variations in the adsorption mechanisms among Pb2+, FA, and NH4+. Specifically, the imaginary conductivity responses indicated that the interaction between NH4+ and GO was weaker compared to Pb2+, possibly because water films could attract NH4+ close to the media surface through a less tightly bound adsorption mechanism. Molecular dynamic simulations demonstrated that Pb2+ had a propensity to be adsorbed near oxygen atoms, with a priority order of carboxyl ≈ epoxy > hydroxyl > carbonyl. This adsorption process occurred rapidly and extensively due to the formation of Pb–O bonds. FA exhibited a tendency to maintain a parallel structure with the GO sheet due to π–π interactions and polar interactions, while the functional groups present in both GO and FA contributed to their mutual attraction, as evidenced by the discovery of coordination C–O bonds. Iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) are the most frequently detected heavy metals in the soil and groundwater near municipal landfill sites. Natural calcium-carbonate-based materials, such as dolomite, effectively remove metal ions and are suitable as reactive materials for permeable reactive barriers (PRBs). However, multiple heavy metals usually coexist in contaminated groundwater, the effectiveness and competitive precipitation mechanisms in the removal of Fe(III) and Mn(II) are unclear. In this study, we investigated the efficiency and influencing factors of the removal of single and coexisting Fe(III) and Mn(II) by dolomite through experimental batch and column tests, property characterization, and PHREEQC simulations. Dolomite with 1.18–2.36 mm particle size showed the best removal efficiency for Fe(III) and Mn(II) through precipitation. Fe(III) was preferentially precipitated by dolomite with higher removal efficiency, attributed to the lower solubility product (Ksp) of iron precipitates. Compared with Fe(III), Mn(II) was precipitated conditionally, and the removal efficiency was restricted by the concentration of Fe(III) in the system. Considering the application of PRB in the field, dolomite would be effective for the remediation of coexisting heavy metals with lower precipitate Ksp. The half-time of Mn(II) removal could serve as a reference for PRB thickness designs if the target metal contaminants were in a similar concentration range as Fe(III) and Mn(II). Additionally, the PRB performance could be affected by the reduction of hydraulic permeability induced by precipitation, and the fine precipitates migrating from PRB might affect downstream groundwater quality. Objective: To investigate the influencing factors and prognosis of immune checkpoint inhibitor-related pneumonitis (CIP) in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients during or after receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors(ICIs). Methods: The clinical and laboratory indicator data of 222 advanced NSCLC patients treated with PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors at the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University between December 2017 and November 2021 were collected retrospectively. The patients were divided into a CIP group (n=41) and a non-CIP group (n=181) according to whether they developed CIP or not before the end of follow-up. Logistic regression was used to evaluate risk factors of CIP, and Kaplan-Meier curveswere used to describe the overall survival (OS) of different groups. The log-rank test was used to compare the survival of different groups. Results: There were 41 patients who developed CIP, and the incidence rate of CIP was 18.5%. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses showed that low pretreatment hemoglobin (HB) and albumin (ALB) levels were independent risk factors for CIP. Univariate analysis suggested that history of chest radiotherapy was related to the incidence of CIP. The median OS of the CIP group and non-CIP were 15.63 months and 30.50 months (HR:2.167; 95%CI: 1.355-3.463, P<0.05), respectively. Univariate and multivariate COX analyses suggested that a high neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) level, a low ALB level and the development of CIP were independent prognostic factors for worse OS of advanced NSCLC patients treated with ICIs. Additionally, the early-onset and high-grade CIP were related to shorter OS in the subgroup. Conclusion: Lower pretreatment HB and ALB levels were independent risk factors for CIP. Regulating the phase transformation of γ → β in dicalcium silicate (C2S) can effectively improve the hydration activity and recycling rate of AOD slag; however, the evolution law for γ → β in C2S has not been extensively investigated. In this study, a novel "two-step" γ → α′L → β phase transformation method in C2S was designed based on the study of the pure C2S phase at a nonequilibrium state in the low- and middle-temperature ranges. The "two-step" method can be used to realize the transformation from needle-like nanostructured γ-C2S grains to lamellar-structured β-C2S grains, exhibiting the trend of interlaminar peeling accompanied by expansion of the particle volume and leading to the appearance of macroscopic lamellar cracking in β-C2S particles. In addition, the β-C2S mass fraction in AOD slag treated by water cooling at 680 °C reaches a maximum value of 47.5 wt pct, while the treated AOD slag presents abundant holes and defects, which can effectively enlarge the hydration contact area. Background: Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy has been widely recognized as an excellent surgical and staging procedure for early-stage breast cancer, and its development has greatly improved the detection of micrometastases. However, the axillary treatment of micrometastasis has been the subject of much debate. Methods: We identified 427,131 women diagnosed with breast cancer from 2010 to 2018 in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Patients whose nodal status was micrometastases (pTxN1miM0) were classified into two groups: the SLNB only group and SLNB with complete ALND group, and we used these classifications to carry out propensity-score matching (PSM) analysis. The primary and secondary endpoints were OS and BCSS, respectively. We then implemented the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional hazard model and used Fine and Gray competitive risk regression to identify factors associated with the risk of all-cause mortality. Results: After the PSM, 1,833 pairs were included in total. The SLNB with complete ALND showed no significant difference in OS (HR=1.04, 95% CI: 0.84-1.28, P=0.73) or BCSS (HR= 1.03, 95% CI: 0.79-1.35, P=0.82) compared to the SLNB only group, and axillary treatment was not associated with breast cancer-specific death (BCSD) (HR=1.13, 95% CI: 0.86-1.48, P=0.400) or other cause-specific death (OCSD) (HR=0.98, 95% CI:0.70-1.38, P=0.920). There was no statistically significant difference in the cumulative incidence of BCSD (Grey's test, P=0.819) or OCSD (Grey's test, P=0.788) for between the two groups either. For different molecular subtypes, patients in the SLNB only group showed no statistically significant differences from those in the SLNB with complete ALND group with Luminal A (HR=1.00, 95% CI:0.76-1.32, P=0.98) or Luminal B (HR=0.82, 95% CI:0.42-1.62, P=0.55) but similar OS to HER2-enriched (HR=1.58, 95% CI:0.81-3.07, P=0.19) or triple negative breast cancers (HR=1.18, 95% CI:0.76-1.81, P=0.46). Conclusions: Our results suggest that in early breast cancer patients with micrometastasis, complete ALND does not seem to be required and that SLNB suffices to control locoregional and distant disease, with no significant adverse effects on survival compared to complete ALND. Peroxisomes have been proved playing roles in infection of several plant pathogens. Although the contribution of a portion of peroxins in pathogenicity was demonstrated, most of them are undocumented in fungi, especially, Botrytis cinerea. The homologs of Pex8, Pex10, and Pex12 in B. cinerea were functionally characterized in this work using gene disruption strategies. Compared with the wild-type strain (WT), the 1bcpex8, 1bcpex10, and 1bcpex12 mutants exhibited significant reduction in melanin production, fatty acid utilization, and decreased tolerance to high osmotic pressure and reactive oxygen species (ROS). The mycelial growth and conidiation of were significantly inhibited in Δcpex8, Δcpex10, and Δcpex12 strains. The mycelial growth rates of Δcpex8, Δcpex10, and Δcpex12 were reduced by 32, 35, and 34%, respectively, compared with WT and ectopic transformant (ET), and the conidiation was reduced by approximately 89, 27, and 88%, respectively. The conidial germination, germ tube elongation, and the formation of initiate infection structures (IFSs) were also reduced by the deletion of the genes. The pathogenicity was tested on the leaves of tobacco and strawberry, and fruits of tomato. On the leaves of tobacco and strawberry, the Δcpex8, Δcpex10, and Δcpex12 mutants could not induce necrotic lesions, and the lesions on tomato fruits infected with the mutants were significantly reduced than those of the wide type. Background: Necroptosis is considered to be a new form of programmed necrotic cell death, which is associated with metastasis, progression and prognosis of various types of tumors. However, the potential role of necroptosis-related genes (NRGs) in the triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is unclear. Methods: We extracted the gene expression and relevant clinicopathological data of TNBC from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) databases and the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) databases. We analyzed the expression, somatic mutation, and copy number variation (CNV) of 67 NRGs in TNBC, and then observed their interaction, biological functions, and prognosis value. By performing Lasso and COX regression analysis, a NRGs-related risk model for predicting overall survival (OS) was constructed and its predictive capabilities were verified. Finally, the relationship between risk_score and immune cell infiltration, tumor microenvironment (TME), immune checkpoint, and tumor mutation burden (TMB), cancer stem cell (CSC) index, and drug sensitivity were analyzed. Results: A total 67 NRGs were identified in our analysis. A small number of genes (23.81%) detected somatic mutation, most genes appeared to have a high frequency of CNV, and there was a close interaction between them. These genes were remarkably enriched in immune-related process. A seven-gene risk_score was generated, containing TPSG1, KRT6A, GPR19, EIF4EBP1, TLE1, SLC4A7, ESPN. The low-risk group has a better OS, higher immune score, TMB and CSC index, and lower IC50 value of common therapeutic agents in TNBC. To improve clinical practicability, we added age, stage_T and stage_N to the risk_score and construct a more comprehensive nomogram for predicting OS. It was verified that nomogram had good predictive capability, the AUC values for 1-, 3-, and 5-year OS were 0.847, 0.908, and 0.942. Conclusion: Our research identified the significant impact of NRGs on immunity and prognosis in TNBC. Abnormal gene expression caused by epigenetic changes, including DNA methylation, is associated with the development and progression of endometriosis. Grainyhead-like 2 gene (GRHL2), a suppressor of epithelial-mesenchymal transition, has been suggested to be associated with the occurrence, progression and poor survival of a variety of cancers. Although endometriosis is a benign disease, it has the biological behaviour of migration and invasion as malignant tumor. This study aims to determine whether the abnormal expression of the GRHL2 caused by aberrant methylation of its promoter is associated with the pathogenesis of ovarian endometriosis. Our results demonstrated that GRHL2 promoter region was significantly hypermethylated in the ectopic endometrium of patients with ovarian endometriosis compared with the normal endometrium of control patients. In contrast, the levels of GRHL2 mRNA and protein were significantly lower in the ectopic endometrium than in the control endometrium. Correlation analysis showed the methylation levels of GRHL2 were significantly negatively correlated with the mRNA expression of GRHL2. Moreover, the in vitro results suggested that the knockdown of GRHL2 could significantly increase the invasion and migration ability of EECs and may promote ZEB1 and vimentin expression while decreasing the expression of E-cadherin in EECs. Taken together, these results suggest that the low expression of GRHL2 caused by hypermethylation of the GRHL2 promoter is associated with ovarian endometriosis. The knockdown of GRHL2 may be involved in the occurrence of endometriosis by increasing EEC migration and invasion. Objectives: To investigate the risk factors for shoulder pain after stroke, and prevent its occurrence effectively. Methods: The patients with stroke treated in our hospital between September 2016 and October 2020 were reviewed retrospectively. The medical records of the included patients including age, gender, lesion side, stroke duration, hospital stay, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, limitation of shoulder joint activity, alcohol abuse, smoking, type of stroke, Ashworth scale, Brunnstrom stage, sensory disorders, and motor arm score of National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) were collected and analyzed to determine the risk factors for shoulder pain after stroke. Results: A total of 1390 patients were included based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, consisting of 162 patients with shoulder pain after stroke and the prevalence was 11.6%. The included patients were divided into shoulder pain group and non-shoulder pain group. There were significant differences in age, stroke duration, hospital stay, diabetes, limitation of shoulder joint activity, Ashworth scale, Brunnstrom stage, sensory disorders, and motor arm score of NIHSS between the two groups (P < 0.05). Based on the multivariate regression analysis, the independent risk factors for shoulder pain after stroke included diabetes, limited shoulder joint activity, Brunnstrom grade I-III period, Ashworth 3-4 grade, motor arm score of NIHSS 3-4 points, and sensory disturbance. Conclusion: Great emphasis should be placed on the stroke patients with diabetes, limited shoulder joint activity, Brunnstrom grade I-III period, Ashworth 3-4 grade, motor arm score of NIHSS 3-4 points, or sensory disturbance, as these patients have higher risks for shoulder pain after stroke. Calreticulin (CALR) is a multifunctional protein that participates in various cellular processes, which include calcium homeostasis, cell adhesion, protein folding, and cancer progression. However, the role of CALR in breast cancer (BC) is unclear. Here, we report that CALR is overexpressed in BC compared with normal tissue, and its expression is correlated with patient mortality and stemness indices. CALR expression was increased in mammosphere cultures, CD24−CD44+ cells, and aldehyde dehydrogenase–expressing cells, which are enriched for breast cancer stem cells (BCSCs). Additionally, CALR knockdown led to BCSC depletion, which impaired tumor initiation andmetastasis and enhanced chemosensitivity in vivo. Chromatin immunoprecipitation and reporter assays revealed that hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) directly activated CALR transcription in hypoxic BC cells. CALR expression was correlated with Wnt/ β-catenin pathway activation, and an activator of Wnt/β-catenin signaling abrogated the inhibitory effect of CALR knockdown on mammosphere formation. Taken together, our results demonstrate that CALR facilitates BC progression by promoting the BCSC phenotype through Wnt/β-catenin signaling in an HIF-1–dependent manner and suggest that CALR may represent a target for BC therapy. Magnaporthe oryzae, a fungal pathogen that causes rice blast, which is the most destructive disease of rice worldwide, has the potential to perform both asexual and sexual reproduction. MAT loci, consisting of MAT genes, were deemed to determine the mating types of M. oryzae strains. However, investigation was rarely performed on the development and molecular mechanisms of the sexual reproduction of the fungus. In the present work, we analyzed the roles of two MAT loci and five individual MAT genes in the sex determination, sexual development and pathogenicity of M. oryzae. Both of the MAT1-1 and MAT1-2 loci are required for sex determination and the development of sexual structures. MAT1-1-1, MAT1-1-3 and MAT1-2-1 genes are crucial for the formation of perithecium. MAT1-1-2 impacts the generation of asci and ascospores, while MAT1-2-2 is dispensable for sexual development. A GFP fusion experiment indicated that the protein of MAT1-1-3 is distributed in the nucleus. However, all of the MAT loci or MAT genes are dispensable for vegetative growth, asexual reproduction, pathogenicity and pathogenicity-related developments of the fungus, suggesting that sexual reproduction is regulated relatively independently in the development of the fungus. In order to improve the infrared detection and discrimination ability of the smart munition to the dynamic armor target under the complex background, the multi-line array infrared detection system is established based on the combination of the single unit infrared detector. The surface dimension features of ground armored targets are identified by size calculating solution algorithm. The signal response value and the value of size calculating are identified by the method of fuzzy recognition to make the fuzzy classification judgment for armored target. According to the characteristics of the target signal, a custom threshold de-noising function is proposed to solve the problem of signal preprocessing. The multi-line array infrared detection can complete the scanning detection in a large area in a short time with the characteristics of smart munition in the steady-state scanning stage. The method solves the disadvantages of wide scanning interval and low detection probability of single unit infrared detection. By reducing the scanning interval, the number of random rendezvous in the infrared feature area of the upper surface is increased, the accuracy of the size calculating is guaranteed. The experiments results show that in the fuzzy recognition method, the size calculating is introduced as the feature operator, which can improve the recognition ability of the ground armor target with different shape size. Background: Zhongyi paste is a traditional Chinese medicine herbal paste that is externally applied to reduce inflammation and relieve pain. Methods: An acute foot swelling inflammation model in C57BL/6J mice was established by carrageenan-induced pathogenesis. Zhongyi paste raised the pain threshold and also reduced the degree of swelling in mice with carrageenan-induced foot swelling. Results: Analysis indicated that serum tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-1 beta, and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) cytokine levels and PGE2 levels in the paw tissue of the mice were decreased by Zhongyi paste treatment. The quantitative polymerase chain reaction and western blot results showed that Zhongyi paste downregulated the mRNA and protein expression of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2), and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and also downregulated the mRNA expression of PGE2. At the same time, the Zhongyi paste exerted a stronger effect as an external drug than that of indomethacin, which is an oral drug, and voltaren, which is an externally applied drug. Conclusions: Our results indicated that Zhongyi paste is a very effective drug to reduce inflammatory swelling of the foot, and its mechanism of action is related to regulation of the ERK1/2-COX-2-PGE2 pathway. The aim of the present study was to investigate the combination of certain serological markers (Forns' index; FI), FibroScan® and acoustic radiation force impulse elastography (ARFI) in the assessment of liver fibrosis in patients with hepatitis B, and to explore the impact of inflammatory activity and steatosis on the accuracy of these diagnostic methods. Eighty-one patients who had been diagnosed with hepatitis B were recruited and the stage of fibrosis was determined by biopsy. The diagnostic accuracy of FI, FibroScan and ARFI, as well as that of the combination of these methods, was evaluated based on the conformity of the results from these tests with those of biopsies. The effect of concomitant inflammation on diagnostic accuracy was also investigated by dividing the patients into two groups based on the grade of inflammation (G<2 and G≥2). The overall univariate correlation between steatosis and the diagnostic value of the three methods was also evaluated. There was a significant association between the stage of fibrosis and the results obtained using ARFI and FibroScan (Kruskal-Wallis; P<0.001 for all patients), and FI (t-test, P<0.001 for all patients). The combination of FI with ARFI/FibroScan increased the predictive accuracy with a fibrosis stage of S≥2 or cirrhosis. There was a significant correlation between the grade of inflammation and the results obtained using ARFI and FibroScan (Kruskal-Wallis, P<0.001 for all patients), and FI (t-test; P<0.001 for all patients). No significant correlation was detected between the measurements obtained using ARFI, FibroScan and FI, and steatosis (r=-0.100, P=0.407; r=0.170, P=0.163; and r=0.154, P=0.216, respectively). ARFI was shown to be as effective in the diagnosis of liver fibrosis as FibroScan or FI, and the combination of ARFI or FibroScan with FI may improve the accuracy of diagnosis. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a signaling gasotransmitter, involved in various physiological and pathological processes. H2S-donating drugs have been tested to conjugate the beneficial effects of H2S with other pharmaceutical properties. It has been shown that the endogenous cystathionine-γ-lyase (CSE)/H2S pathway participates in myocardial ischemia injury in isolated hearts in rats. The present study aimed to investigate the cytoprotective action of H2S against acute myocardial ischemia injury in rats. Isolated rat hearts were perfused and subjected to ischemic conditions for 4 h. The hearts were assigned to five groups: Sham, model, infarct plus low-dose (5 μmol/l) NaHS, infarct plus middle-dose (10 μmol/l) NaHS and infarct plus high-dose (20 μmol/l) NaHS. The administration of NaHS enhanced the activity of CSE, increased the content of H2S and reduced infarct volumes following myocardial ischemia injury. Furthermore, the administration of NaHS attenuated the injury to organelles (including the mitochondria, nucleus and myofilaments) by reducing lactate dehydrogenase activity, decreasing the level of mitochondrial malondialdehyde and increasing the activities of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase in the ischemic myocardial mitochondria. These protective effects of H2S against myocardial ischemia injury appeared to be mediated by its antioxidant activities and the preservation of mitochondrial function. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Eight host-guest assemblies of zeolite A (ZA) and their thin films have been synthesized. The assembly of zeolite A was prepared by first embedding lanthanide complexes (Eu(TTA)n or Tb(TAA)n) into the cages of zeolite A and then grafting lanthanide complexes (Eu(L) or Tb(L), L = bipy or phen) onto the surface of functionalized zeolite A via 3-(methacryloyloxy)propyltrimethoxysilane (γ-MPS). The obtained organic- inorganic hybrid materials were investigated by means of XRD, FT-IR, SEM and luminescence spectroscopy. Firstly, the dependence of the crystal stability of zeolite A as the host of lanthanide complexes on the level of ion exchange was studied by XRD. The results indicated the degradation and partial collapse of zeolite A framework occurred upon doping with high amounts of lanthanide complexes into its channels. The integrity of zeolite A's framework was well maintained after fabrication through careful control of the ionexchange extent. Secondly, the thin films of zeolite A assemblies obtained this way have the properties of homogeneous dense packing and a high degree of coverage of the crystals on the ITO glass, as shown in SEM images. Thirdly, the luminescence behavior of all the materials were investigated in detail. Among them, four white light-emitting materials from a three-component system that comprises a blue-emitting zeolite A matrix, a red-emitting europium complex and a green-emitting terbium complex were obtained. Damage on rail increasingly originates from the surface of the rail as a result of for example rolling contact fatigue (RCF). This is a major concern for track operators, who operate test regimes for flaw detection and monitoring. The paper aims to assess the feasibility of applying electromagnetic (EM) simulation techniques to high frequency magnetic induction sensing of flaws in a section of rail head using the Boundary element method (BEM). When the driving frequency is significantly high (~MHz), the rail with high conductivity can be treated as perfect electric conductors (PEC) with negligible errors. In this scenario, BEM based on scalar potential and integral formulations becomes an effective way to analyze this kind of scattering problems since meshes are only required on the surface of the object. A simple high frequency magnetic induction sensing system was chosen to inspect the surface flaw of the rail. Different kinds of flaws were tested with different sensor configurations. The simulations were carried out using an algorithm the authors have developed in MATLAB. The paper provides new insights into the application of magnetic induction sensing technique using BEM in non-destructive testing. Background: Karyotyping is considered the gold standard for the genome-wide detection of genomic imbalances in prenatal diagnosis, but it has a number of inherent limitations, namely the time required to culture cell and the limited resolution(5 ~ 10 Mb). Although fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) can also be used as a rapid prenatal diagnosis for common aneuploidies, it is labor intensive, requires prior knowledge of the regions of interest, and can only be used to diagnose one or a few genomic regions simultaneously. Array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) can overcome the resolution, the locus-specific, and the time limitations of the karyotyping and FISH techniques and is currently the most powerful method for detecting chromosomal alterations in pre and postnatal clinical cases. Several investigations have suggested that the aCGH testing should be considered a firsttier test for the diagnosis of cytogenetic aberrations in the fetus. Results: This study used karyotyping, FISH, sequence-tagged site (STS) analysis and aCGH to diagnose a case of de novo duplication of chromosome 21q22.12-q22.3 with other concomitant deletion and duplication of small fragments in 21q associated with Down syndrome prenatally. Background: Array-based comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) is a new technique for detectingsubmicroscopic deletions and duplications, and can overcome many of the limitations associated with classic cytogenetic analysis. However, its clinical use in spontaneous abortion needs comprehensive evaluation. We used aCGH to investigate chromosomal imbalances in 100 spontaneous abortions and compared the results with Gbanding karyotyping and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Inconsistent results were verified by quantitative fluorescence PCR. Results: Abnormalities were detected in 61 cases. aCGH achieved the highest detection rate (93.4%, 57/61) compared with traditional karyotyping (77%, 47/61) and FISH analysis (68.9%, 42/61). aCGH identified all chromosome abnormalities reported by traditional karyotyping and interphase FISH analysis, with the exception of four triploids. It also detected three additional aneuploidy cases in 37 specimens with 'normal' karyotypes, one mosaicism and 10 abnormalities in 14 specimens that failed to grow in vitro. Conclusions: aCGH analysis circumvents many limitations in traditional karyotyping or FISH. The accuracy and efficiency of aCGH in spontaneous abortions highlights its clinical usefulness for the future. We present new calibrations of far-ultraviolet (FUV) attenuation as derived from the total infrared to FUV luminosity ratio (IRX) and the FUV--near-UV(NUV) color. We find that the IRX-corrected FUV luminosities are tightly and linearly correlated with the attenuation-corrected Hα luminosities (as measured from the Balmer decrement), with an rms scatter of ±0.09 dex. The ratios of these attenuation-corrected FUV to Hα luminosities are consistent with evolutionary synthesis model predictions, assuming a constant star formation rate over 100 Myr, solar metallicity. and either a Salpeter or a Kroupa initial mass function with lower and upper mass limits of 0.1 and 100 M⊙. The IRX-corrected FUV to Balmer-corrected Hα luminosity ratios do not show any trend with other galactic properties over the ranges covered by our sample objects. In contrast, FUV attenuation derived from the FUV--NUV color (UV spectral slope) show much larger random and systematic uncertainties. When compared to either Balmer-corrected Hα luminosities or IRX-corrected FUV luminosities the color-corrected FUV luminosities show ~2.5 times larger rms scatter, and systematic nonlinear deviations as functions of luminosity and other parameters. Linear combinations of 25 µm and 1.4 GHz radio continuum luminosities with the observed FUV luminosities are also well correlated with the Balmer-corrected Hα luminosities. These results provide useful prescriptions for deriving attenuation-corrected star formation rates of galaxies based on linear combinations of UV and IR or radio luminosities, which are presented in convenient tabular form. Crystallisation of benzene-1,2,4,5-tetracarboxylic acid or benzene-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid with divalent metal ions of Co, and Mn with 1,10-phenanthroline gives two new coordination solids, [Co2(C10H2O8)(C12H8N2)2(H2O)6]·2H2O ( 1 ) and [Mn3(C9H3O6)2(C12H8N2)2(H2O)2] n ( 2 ). The three-dimensional supramolecular structure of compound 1 is constructed from discrete [Co2(C10H2O8)(C12H8N2)2(OH2)6] dimers and isolated water molecules via interesting hydrogen-bonding and π–π stacking interactions. Compound 2 has an unusual (4,&ThickSpace;6) network, and the network is furthermore extended into a three-dimensional supramolecular architecture by the aid of hydrogen bonding and π–π stacking interactions. Dicalcium silicate is one of the main mineral phases of steel slag. Ascribed to the characteristics of hydration and carbonation, the application of slag in cement production and carbon dioxide sequestration has been confirmed as feasible. In the current study, the precipitation process of the dicalcium silicate phase in steel slag was discussed. Meanwhile, the study put emphasis on the influence of different crystal forms of dicalcium silicate on the hydration activity and carbonation characteristics of steel slag. It indicates that most of the dicalcium silicate phase in steel slag is the γ phase with the weakest hydration activity. The hydration activity of γ-C2S is improved to a certain extent by means of mechanical, high temperature, and chemical activation. However, the carbonation activity of γ-C2S is about two times higher than that of β-C2S. Direct and indirect carbonation can effectively capture carbon dioxide. This paper also summarizes the research status of the application of steel slag in cement production and carbon dioxide sequestration. Metals are thought to have profound effects on the internal structures of the molecular clouds in which stars are born. The absence of metals is expected to prevent gas from efficient cooling and fragmentation in theory. However, this effect has not yet been observed in low-metallicity environments, such as in the early universe and local dwarf galaxies, because of the lack of high-spatial-resolution maps of gas. We carried out Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of the carbon monoxide (CO) J = 2–1 emission line at 1.4 parsec resolutions of a molecular cloud in DDO 70 at 7% solar metallicity, the most metal-poor galaxy currently known with a CO detection. In total, five clumps have been identified and they are found to more or less follow Larson’s law. Since the CO emission exists in regions with visual extinction AV around 1.0, we converted this AV to the gas-mass surface density using a gas-to-dust ratio of 4594 ± 2848 for DDO 70. We found that the CO clumps in DDO 70 exhibit significantly larger (on average four times) sizes than those at the same gas-mass surface densities in the massive star formation regions of the Milky Way. The existence of such large clumps appears to be consistent with theoretical expectations that gas fragmentation in low-metallicity clouds is suppressed. While our observation is only for one cloud in the galaxy, if it is representative, the above result implies suppressed gas fragmentation during the cloud collapse and star formation in the early universe. The influence of internal moving viscoelastic fluid on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with two fixed ends is first investigated. The constitutive relation of viscoelastic fluid is presented by a Maxwell non-Newtonian fluid model. A new governing equation of motion of a SWCNT conveying viscoelastic fluid with third-order derivative with respect to time is derived. Differential quadrature method is used to discretize the governing equation, and the complex vibration frequencies of the SWCNT are obtained by solving a cubic eigenvalue problem. It is interesting to observe from computational results that natural frequency of the SWCNT is obviously larger, and decaying rate of the amplitude is smaller, for the larger viscoelastic parameter of the Maxwell fluid. We present ALMA observations of the CO(1−0) line and 3 mm continuum emission in eight ultraluminous infrared (IR) quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) at z = 0.06–0.19. All eight IR QSO hosts are clearly resolved in their CO molecular gas emission with a median source size of 3.2 kpc, and seven out of eight sources are detected in 3 mm continuum, which is found to be more centrally concentrated with respect to molecular gas with sizes of 0.4−1.0 kpc. Our observations reveal a diversity of CO morphology and kinematics for the IR QSO systems, which can be roughly classified into three categories: rotating gas disk with ordered velocity gradient, compact CO peak with disturbed velocity, and multiple CO distinct sources undergoing a merger between a luminous QSO and a companion galaxy separated by a few kpc. The molecular gas in three of the IR QSO hosts is found to be rotation-dominated with a ratio of the maximum rotation velocity to the local velocity dispersion of Vrot/σ = 4–6. Basic estimates of the dynamical masses within the CO-emitting regions give masses between 7.4 × 109 and 6.9 × 1010M⊙. We find an increasing trend between black hole mass accretion rate and star formation rate (SFR) over 3 orders of magnitude in far-IR luminosity/SFR, in line with the correlation between QSO bolometric luminosity and star formation activity, indicative of a likely direct connection between active galactic nuclei and star formation activity over galaxy evolution timescales. In this paper, plain aluminum was chosen as matrix alloy and graphene reinforced aluminum alloy composites was successfully prepared via powder metallurgy approach. Micro-milling experiments were conducted to explore the effect of varying graphene nanoflakes (GNFs) content (0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5% by weight) on the machinability of composites and their machining results were compared with that of plain aluminum. Chip morphology, milling force, and machined surface morphology were used as the machinability measures. Experiment results showed that when the content of GNFs is less than 1.5%, the grain refinement of GNFs plays a major role. The hardness and density of the composites are increased. When the content of GNFs is more than 1.5%, the agglomeration phenomenon is obvious, which reduces the hardness and density of the composites. Micro-milling results show that the milling force is the highest when the GNFs content is 1%, and curling degree of chips increased as FPT increase for a certain content of graphene of composites. Furthermore, when the content of GNFs in composites is more than 1%, the surface roughness of milling grooves is greatly improved, which may be related to the lubrication of graphene and the formation of continuous chips. Lyα emitters (LAEs) may represent an important galaxy population in the low-mass regime. We present our deep narrowband imaging surveys in the COSMOS and ECDF-S fields and study the properties of LAEs at z = 2.23 ± 0.03. The narrowband surveys conducted at the Magellan II telescope allow us to obtain a sample of 452 LAEs, reaching a 5σ limiting magnitude of ∼26 mag. Our Lyα luminosity functions extend to L(Lyα) =1041.8 erg s−1 with a steep faint-end slope. Using multiwavelength ancillary data, especially the deep Spitzer/IRAC 3.6 and 4.5 μm photometric data, we obtained reliable stellar mass estimates for 130 IRAC-detected LAEs, spanning a range of 8 < log(M⋆/M⊙) < 11.5. For the remaining IRAC-undetected LAEs, the median-stacked spectral energy distribution yields a stellar mass of and the rest-frame ultraviolet emission indicates a median star formation rate (SFR) of log (SFR/M⊙ yr−1) = −0.14 ± 0.35. There are six LAEs detected by the Spitzer/MIPS 24 μm or even Herschel far-infrared observations. Taking into account the six mid-IR/far-IR-detected LAEs, our LAEs cover a wide range in the SFR (1 M⊙ yr−1 < SFR < 2000 M⊙ yr−1). Although LAEs as a population are diverse in their stellar properties, they are mostly low-mass star-forming galaxies and follow the star formation main-sequence relations or their extrapolations to the low-mass end, implying a normal star-forming nature of LAEs. The Lyα escape fraction is a key measure to constrain the neutral state of the intergalactic medium and then to understand how the universe was fully reionized. We combine deep narrowband imaging data from the custom-made filter NB393 and the filter centered at 2.14 μm to examine the Lyα emitters and Hα emitters at the same redshift z = 2.24. The combination of these two populations allows us to determine the Lyα escape fraction at z = 2.24. Over an area of 383 arcmin2 in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ECDFS), 124 Lyα emitters are detected down to NB393 = 26.4 mag at the 5σ level, and 56 Hα emitters come from An et al. Of these, four have both Lyα and Hα emissions (LAHAEs). We also collect the Lyα emitters and Hα emitters at z = 2.24 in the COSMOS field from the literature, and increase the number of LAHAEs to 15 in total. About one-third of them are AGNs. We measure the individual/volumetric Lyα escape fraction by comparing the observed Lyα luminosity/luminosity density to the extinction-corrected Hα luminosity/luminosity density. We revisit the extinction correction for Hα emitters using the Galactic extinction law with color excess for nebular emission. We also adopt the Calzetti extinction law together with an identical color excess for stellar and nebular regions to explore how the uncertainties in extinction correction affect the estimate of individual and global Lyα escape fractions. In both cases, an anti-correlation between the Lyα escape fraction and dust attenuation is found among the LAHAEs, suggesting that dust absorption is responsible for the suppression of the escaping Lyα photons. However, the estimated Lyα escape fraction of individual LAHAEs varies by up to ∼3 percentage points between the two methods of extinction correction. We find the global Lyα escape fraction at z = 2.24 to be (3.7 ± 1.4)% in the ECDFS. The variation in the color excess of the extinction causes a discrepancy of ∼1 percentage point in the global Lyα escape fraction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the aim of exploring the fast evolutionary path from the blue cloud of star-forming galaxies to the red sequence of quiescent galaxies in the local universe, we select a local advanced merging infrared luminous and ultraluminous galaxy (adv-merger (U)LIRGs) sample and perform careful dust extinction corrections to investigate their positions in the star formation rate–M*, u − r, and NUV − r color–mass diagrams. The sample consists of 89 (U)LIRGs at the late merger stage, obtained from cross-correlating the Infrared Astronomical Satellite Point Source Catalog Redshift Survey and 1 Jy ULIRGs samples with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR7 database. Our results show that of adv-merger (U)LIRGs are localized above the 1σ line of the local star-forming galaxy main sequence. We also find that all adv-merger (U)LIRGs are more massive than and as blue as the blue cloud galaxies after corrections for Galactic and internal dust extinctions, with and of them outside the blue cloud on the u − r and NUV − r color–mass diagrams, respectively. These results, combined with the short timescale for exhausting the molecular gas reservoir in adv-merger (U)LIRGs ( to years), imply that the adv-merger (U)LIRGs are likely at the starting point of the fast evolutionary track previously proposed by several groups. While the number density of adv-merger (U)LIRGs is only of the blue cloud star-forming galaxies in the local universe, this evolutionary track may play a more important role at high redshift.
