Despite the known benefits of campus recreation participation, many students do not engage with the programs and services offered on college campuses. College students report factors that constrain leisure time physical activity within the context of campus recreation. Examining the constraints and negotiation strategies of college students specific to the use of campus recreation facilities and programs is understudied and lacks validated instruments. The purpose of this study was to develop and report initial validity and reliability of the Campus Recreation Constraints and Negotiation Questionnaire. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were used to evaluate two independent scales. Psychometric properties including construct validity, internal structure, and reliability are reported from two different samples of college students. Type Ibn supernovae (SNe Ibn) are rare stellar explosions powered primarily by interaction between the SN ejecta and H-poor, He-rich material lost by their progenitor stars. Multiwavelength observations, particularly in the X-rays, of SNe Ibn constrain their poorly understood progenitor channels and mass-loss mechanisms. Here we present Swift X-ray, ultraviolet, and ground-based optical observations of the Type Ibn SN 2022ablq, only the second SN Ibn with X-ray detections to date. While similar to the prototypical Type Ibn SN 2006jc in the optical, SN 2022ablq is roughly an order of magnitude more luminous in the X-rays, reaching unabsorbed luminosities L X ∼ 4 × 1040 erg s−1 between 0.2–10 keV. From these X-ray observations we infer time-varying mass-loss rates between 0.05 and 0.5 M ⊙ yr−1 peaking 0.5–2 yr before explosion. This complex mass-loss history and circumstellar environment disfavor steady-state winds as the primary progenitor mass-loss mechanism. We also search for precursor emission from alternative mass-loss mechanisms, such as eruptive outbursts, in forced photometry during the 2 yr before explosion. We find no statistically significant detections brighter than M ≈ −14—too shallow to rule out precursor events similar to those observed for other SNe Ibn. Finally, numerical models of the explosion of an ∼15 M ⊙ helium star that undergoes an eruptive outburst ≈1.8 yr before explosion are consistent with the observed bolometric light curve. We conclude that our observations disfavor a Wolf–Rayet star progenitor losing He-rich material via stellar winds and instead favor lower-mass progenitor models, including Roche-lobe overflow in helium stars with compact binary companions or stars that undergo eruptive outbursts during late-stage nucleosynthesis stages. Lithium (Li) is becoming increasingly important due to its use in clean technologies that are required for the transition to net zero. Although acidophilic bioleaching has been used to recover metals from a wide range of deposits, its potential to recover Li has not yet been fully explored. In this study, we used a model Fe(II)- and S-oxidising bacterium, Acidiothiobacillus ferrooxidans (At. Ferrooxidans), to extract Li from three different minerals and kinetic modelling to predict the dominant reaction pathways for Li release. Bioleaching of Li from the aluminosilicate minerals lepidolite (K(Li,Al)3(Al,Si,Rb)4O10(F,OH)2) and spodumene (LiAl(Si2O6)) was slow, with only up to 14% (approximately 12 mg/L) of Li released over 30 days. By contrast, At. ferrooxidans accelerated Li leaching from a Li-bearing borosilicate clay (jadarite, LiNaB3SiO7OH) by over 50% (over 120 mg/L) in 21 days of leaching, and consistently enhanced Li release throughout the experiment compared to the uninoculated control. Biofilm formation and flocculation of sediment occurred exclusively in the experiments with At. ferrooxidans and jadarite. Fe(II) present in the jadarite-bearing clay acted as an electron donor. Chemical leaching of Li from jadarite using H2SO4 was most effective, releasing approximately 75% (180 mg/L) of Li, but required more acid than bioleaching for pH control. Kinetic modelling was unable to replicate the data for jadarite bioleaching after primary abiotic leaching stages, suggesting additional processes beyond chemical leaching were responsible for the release of Li. A new crystalline phase, tentatively identified as boric acid, was observed to form after acid leaching of jadarite. Overall, the results demonstrate the potential for acidophilic bioleaching to recover Li from jadarite, with relevance for other Li-bearing deposits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Retrograde trans-synaptic degeneration (TSD) following retro-chiasmal pathology, typically retro-geniculate in multiple sclerosis (MS), may manifest as homonymous hemi-macular atrophy (HHMA) of the ganglion cell/inner plexiform layer (GCIPL). Objective: To determine the frequency, association with clinical outcomes, and retinal and radiological features of HHMA in people with MS (PwMS). Methods: In this cross-sectional study, healthy controls (HC) and PwMS underwent retinal optical coherence tomography scanning. For quantitative identification of HHMA, a normalized asymmetry ratio was used, and its normative cutoffs were established from the HC. HHMA PwMS were propensity score matched 1:2 to non-HHMA PwMS. Mixed-effects linear regression models were used in analyses. Results: Based on normative data from 238 HC (466 eyes), 79 out of 942 PwMS exhibited HHMA (8.4%; 143 eyes). Compared to non-HHMA eyes from matched PwMS (158 PwMS; 308 eyes), HHMA eyes had lower average GCIPL (diff: −5.7 μm (95% CI −7.6 to −3.8); p < 0.001) but also inner nuclear layer (diff: −0.9 μm (95% CI −1.6 to −0.1); p = 0.02), and outer nuclear layer (diff: −1.9 μm (95% CI −3.4 to −0.4); p = 0.02) thicknesses; in further analyses, these differences were exclusive to the homonymous side of HHMA. HHMA participants also exhibited higher expanded disability status scale scores (diff: 0.5 (95% CI 0.1 to 0.9); p = 0.02), worse 100% and 2.5% visual acuity scores (diff: −3.2 (95% CI −4.1 to −1.0); p = 0.002, −5.4 (95% CI −7.5 to −3.5); p < 0.001), and higher frequency of microcystoid macular changes (10.1% vs. 3.2%; p = 0.03) compared to non-HHMA participants. Comprehensive evaluation of cancer screening activities based on individual experiences is urgently needed to address the burden of cancer among Métis people. In this co-designed and co-led study, a cancer screening questionnaire developed for Métis people to evaluate their cancer screening histories and to explore barriers and facilitators to cancer screening was used. Adult Métis Albertans were invited to participate in the anonymous survey through a multi-modal strategy used for community consultations. Descriptive analyses compared responses between regions, age groups and geographic locations. In total, 370 participants who identified as Métis consented and contributed responses between 12 September and 2 December 2022. Female respondents reported higher rates of cervical and breast cancer screening (>94%) and lower rates of colorectal cancer screening (67–78%). Most of the barriers and facilitators were rated as very important, especially access to reliable and accurate information on screening, risks and benefits of cancer screening, explanation of the test results or procedures, trust in their health care provider(s) and health care system and access to a primary health care provider. This study fills a crucial gap that can inform targeted interventions to increase cancer screening awareness and rates among Métis Albertans and reduce their cancer burden. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, I offer an après-coup of my transdisciplinary practice-based doctoral thesis, Writing-As-Shadow-Work: An Aesthetics of Jungian Psychoanalysis (2023), to show how the creative licence afforded by autobiographical fiction enabled me to give language to a personal experience of trauma and engage with a Jungian worldview of the psyche that constellates external reality with the inner realm of the unconscious. I share how I employed the invention allowed by autobiographical fiction as a creative strategy to access my personal unconscious and the cross-cultural intuitive knowledge of the collective unconscious as a means to facilitate my ongoing process of recovery from trauma via a sequence of autobiographical short stories. In addition, I reflect on how it was through this process that I was able to expand on the possibilities of autobiographical fiction by employing it as a literary and therapeutic device with the potential to not only represent reality but also invent it. Background: Semaglutide, a glucagon‐like peptide‐1 receptor agonist, has demonstrated potential beneficial effects in metabolic dysfunction‐associated steatohepatitis (MASH). Aims: To describe the trial design and baseline characteristics of the 'Effect of Semaglutide in Subjects with Non‐cirrhotic Non‐alcoholic Steatohepatitis' (ESSENCE) trial (NCT04822181). Methods: ESSENCE is a two‐part, phase 3, randomised, multicentre trial evaluating the effect of subcutaneous semaglutide 2.4 mg in participants with biopsy‐proven MASH and fibrosis stage 2 or 3. The primary objective of Part 1 is to demonstrate that semaglutide improves liver histology compared with placebo. The two primary endpoints are: resolution of steatohepatitis and no worsening of liver fibrosis, and improvement in liver fibrosis and no worsening of steatohepatitis. The Part 2 objective is based on clinical outcomes. The current work reports baseline characteristics of the first 800 randomised participants which includes demographics, laboratory parameters, liver histology, non‐invasive tests and presence of metabolic dysfunction‐associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) cardiometabolic criteria. Results: Of 800 participants, 250 (31.3%) had fibrosis stage 2 and 550 (68.8%) had fibrosis stage 3. In the overall population, mean (standard deviation [SD]) age was 56 (11.6) years, 57.1% were female, mean (SD) body mass index was 34.6 (7.2) kg/m2, 55.5% had type 2 diabetes and > 99% had at least one MASLD cardiometabolic criterion according to the published definition. Conclusion: The ESSENCE baseline population includes participants with clinically significant fibrosis stages 2 and 3. Although MASLD cardiometabolic criteria were not a requirement for study enrolment, almost all participants (> 99%) had at least one MASLD cardiometabolic criterion. The neuroendocrine control of puberty and reproduction is fascinatingly complex, with up‐ and down‐regulation of key reproductive hormones during fetal, infantile, and later childhood periods that determine the correct function of the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis and the timing of puberty. Neuronal development is a vital element of these processes, and multiple conditions of disordered puberty and reproduction have their etiology in abnormal neuronal migration or function. Although there are numerous documented cases across multiple conditions wherein patients have both neurodevelopmental disorders and pubertal abnormalities, this has mostly been described ad hoc and the associations are not clearly documented. In this review, we aim to describe the overlap between these two groups of conditions and to increase awareness to ensure that puberty and reproductive function are carefully monitored in patients with neurodevelopmental conditions, and vice versa. Moreover, this commonality can be explored for clues about the disease mechanisms in these patient groups and provide new avenues for therapeutic interventions for affected individuals. Carcass scavenging by vertebrates is a critical ecosystem service that is influenced by environmental factors such as season and habitat. However, there is limited understanding of the role that these factors play in shaping scavenging patterns across different bioregions. We used camera traps to monitor vertebrate scavengers at 120 kangaroo (Family: Macropodidae) carcasses that were positioned across different seasons (warm/cool) and habitats (open/closed canopy) in three disparate desert, subalpine and temperate bioregions in Australia. Our survey identified 27 species that scavenged carcasses and revealed clear differences in scavenging patterns across the three bioregions. Carcass use was highest for feral cats, birds of prey, corvids and red foxes in the desert bioregion; for reptiles and dingoes in the temperate bioregion and for feral pigs, possums and dingoes in the subalpine bioregion. Bioregional differences in scavenger guild composition explained >4.6 times more variation in scavenger guild dissimilarity than season and >9.8 times more variation than habitat. Further, habitat had few effects on scavenger communities or carcass detection and use, whereas season was a strong predictor of these responses. Across bioregions, there were some general seasonal and habitat scavenging trends, with mammals and birds often using carcasses more frequently in cooler seasons and birds detecting carcasses faster in open habitat. However, there was also extensive within‐bioregion seasonal variation. For example, depending on bioregion, some animals scavenged more frequently or detected carcasses faster in warmer seasons (i.e. birds and reptiles). Our results show that vertebrate scavenging is mediated by a complex interplay of environmental variables, especially seasonality, which may operate differently across bioregions. Brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) are becoming increasingly recognized as key members of local scavenger guilds in Australia. Yet, our understanding of the spatiotemporal scavenging dynamics of this mainly herbivorous marsupial species remains limited. We investigated abiotic and biotic factors influencing possum carcass use across an alpine and temperate bioregion in Australia. Using camera traps set on experimentally placed kangaroo carcasses, we first examined the influence of both open and closed canopy habitats and warm and cool seasons on possum scavenging behaviour across both bioregions. While scavenging was minimal in open habitats across both bioregions—likely a reflection of possums being an arboreal species—seasonality did significantly influence possum activity. Possums scavenged on carcasses in temperate regions entirely during cooler months. Scavenging was recorded year‐round in the alpine region, but with total possum feeding time on carcasses 5.9 times higher in cooler months. A more detailed 12‐month study in the alpine region confirmed this strong seasonal influence on possum scavenging, with possums up to 5.4 times more likely to discover carcasses in winter and spend up to 6.7 times longer feeding on carcasses during this season. The variability in possum scavenging behaviour between bioregions and seasons highlights the spatiotemporal complexity of possum scavenging behaviour and the importance of considering abiotic and biotic factors to understand the behaviours of scavengers more broadly. Recognizing primarily herbivorous animals as important yet often overlooked members of local scavenger guilds can help advance our understanding of complex scavenging networks and the intricate pathways through which energy flows in ecosystems, both in Australia and in other systems. Improving our understanding of the spatiotemporal scavenging dynamics of typically herbivorous species may also help to inform more nuanced and effective wildlife management strategies, where supplementary foraging on atypical food resources poses conservation concerns. Collaboration between teachers of students who are deaf and hard of hearing (TSDHH) and educational audiologists is essential when developing successful, comprehensive service delivery plans for students who are deaf and hard of hearing. Despite the importance, little is known about how these two professions work together. This study sought to describe the current state of collaboration between educational audiologists and TSDHH and to explore the barriers and facilitators to this collaboration. Anonymous survey responses from 752 educational audiologists and TSDHH showed that collaboration is considered valuable and is occurring frequently, via a variety of formats and despite significant barriers. More research is needed to understand how efforts to minimize barriers to collaboration might improve the quality of collaboration and ultimately impact the success of student support. Objectives: Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) is highly associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS), which is rapidly increasing in young adults. However, accessible VAT measurement methods are limited, restricting the use of VAT in early detection. This cross‐sectional study sought to determine if near‐infrared reactance spectroscopy (NIRS)‐derived VAT (VATNIRS) was associated with MetS in a multi‐ethnic sample of young adults. Methods: A total of 107 male and female (F:62, M:45) participants (age: 23.0 ± 4.3y; BMI: 27.1 ± 6.6 kg/m2) completed measurements of fasting blood pressure, blood glucose (FBG), blood lipids, and anthropometric assessments including waist circumference and VATNIRS. MetS severity (MetSindex) was calculated from the aforementioned risk factors using sex and race‐specific equations. Results: VATNIRS was higher in participants with, and at risk for, MetS compared to those with lower risks (all p <.001). VATNIRS was positively associated with MetSindex for all groups (all p <.001). VATNIRS showed positive associations with systolic (SBP), diastolic (DBP), and mean arterial pressure (MAP), LDL‐C and LDL‐C‐related biomarkers, and FBG; and negative associations with HDL‐C and HDL‐C‐to‐total cholesterol ratio (all p <.050). Associations between VATNIRS and blood pressure for females, and LDL‐C and LDL‐C‐related biomarkers for males, were nonsignificant (all p >.050). VATNIRS was positively associated with DBP in African–American participants, and SBP in White participants, resulting in positive associations with MAP for both groups (all p <.050). Conclusions: VATNIRS is associated with MetS and individual MetS risks factors in a multi‐ethnic sample of young adults; providing a noninvasive, cost‐effective, portable, and accessible method that may assist in the early detection of MetS and other cardiometabolic abnormalities. Apex scavengers can perform an important ecosystem service by rapidly removing carrion, in turn regulating nutrient cycling linked to carcass decomposition. Yet, our understanding of the biotic and abiotic factors that influence rates of apex scavenging and their behaviour around carrion remains limited, in part because of the absence of replicated studies across different bioregions, habitats and seasons. Here, we examine the use of carrion by one of Australia's apex scavengers, the wedge‐tailed eagle Aquila audax, and uncover the extent and consequences of their social interactions at carrion. We applied a standardised design to monitor 120 kangaroo (Family: Macropodidae) carcasses using camera traps across contrasting bioregions (desert, forest and alpine), habitats (open and closed canopy) and seasons (warm and cool). We predicted that wedge‐tailed eagles would discover carcasses quicker in open habitats, and that intrinsic carrion value (ICV), or the desirability of carrion, would be related to dietary stress as a function of productivity and season (i.e. we expected to see increased carcass use by eagles in the less productive desert bioregion and in cooler seasons). Across all bioregions, we found that wedge‐tailed eagles discovered carcasses in open habitats 2.7 times faster than in closed habitats and 5.3 times faster in cool seasons compared with warm seasons. Scavenging was more likely to occur in open environments and was more frequent in cool seasons and in the desert bioregion. ICV largely governed social interactions; there were more aggressive encounters between wedge‐tailed eagles during cool seasons and in the desert bioregion. Our results highlight how bioregional, habitat, and seasonal variation can drive scavenging rates and social interactions between conspecific apex scavengers. Further studies considering both carrion use and corresponding behavioural interactions will enhance our understanding of how carrion contributes to shaping interactions between and within species groups as well as scavenger communities more broadly. Context. The protection of threatened species in fenced safe havens has become a vital component of conservation management in Australia. However, despite their success, fenced safe havens face several ecological and economic constraints. There is a need to explore additional approaches to restore species beyond the fence. Aims. To explore naturally occurring mesas as potential 'sky-island safe havens', created by natural barriers in elevation and relief, which may restrict the movement of introduced predators and other mammals. Methods. We examined species occurrences at a mesa site (Mt. Talaterang in south-east NSW, Australia) as well as a nearby lower-lying site (Little Forest Plateau). We then provide a geospatial analysis of other mesas in NSW to investigate the number of potential sky-island safe havens in the state. Key results. Species assemblages differed between the two sites, with red foxes (Vulpes vulpes), dingoes/domestic dogs (Canis dingo/familiaris), and European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) absent from the mesa site, while Antechinus spp. were not detected from the lower-lying site. Feral cats (Felis catus) occurred at significantly lower densities on the mesa site compared to the lower-lying site. In NSW, we identified 91 other mesas of =10 ha with similar topology as Mt. Talaterang. Conclusions. Although differences in species assemblages are expected between different habitats, the absence of red foxes and lower number of feral cat detections at the mesa site suggest the need to further explore the potential for mesas in conservation initiatives. Background: Stiff person syndrome spectrum disorders (SPSD) are rare, disabling disorders of the nervous system that are associated with risk factors for Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, limited data exist on the overall impact of COVID-19 on SPSD. Methods: Patients with SPSD and COVID-19 who are followed at Johns Hopkins SPS Center were included. Demographics and SPSD characteristics along with COVID-19-specific data were recorded. Results: Thirty-five cases of SPSD with COVID-19 cases were reported during the study time period. Mean age of the cohort was 56 (SD ± 10) and most were female (66.7%). Eighty percent of the COVID-19 cases were confirmed with testing, and the rest were highly suggestive of COVID-19. COVID-19 comorbidities among patients were hypertension (n = 6), diabetes (n = 6), obesity (n = 5), and cardiovascular disease (n = 4). The majority of participants were on immune therapies and/or benzodiazepines. Out of the cases reported, only 2 required hospitalization, both of whom had diabetes, and one was on immunosuppressive therapy. The majority of cases were post-full-vaccination cases. Fever was the most common COVID-19-associated symptom. Transient neurological symptoms were also reported. Conclusion: Risk factors for developing severe COVID-19 in SPSD appear to be the same as historical data in the general population. Importantly, COVID-19 did not appear to be associated with worsening SPSD post-COVID-19. Vaccination may have played a role in preventing severe cases of COVID-19. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. There is a growing number of peculiar events that cannot be assigned to any of the main classes. SN 1987A and a handful of similar objects, thought to be explosive outcomes of blue supergiant stars, is one of them: while their spectra closely resemble those of H-rich (IIP) SNe, their light curve (LC) evolution is very different. Aims. Here we present the detailed photometric and spectroscopic analysis of SN 2021aatd, a peculiar Type II explosion. While its early-time evolution resembles that of the slowly evolving double-peaked SN 2020faa (although at a lower luminosity scale), after ∼40 days its LC shape becomes similar to that of SN 1987A-like explosions. Methods. In addition to comparing LCs, color curves, and spectra of SN 2021aatd to those of SNe 2020faa, 1987A, and other objects, we compared the observed spectra with our own SYN++ models and with the outputs of published radiative transfer models. We also carried out a detailed modeling of the pseudo-bolometric LCs of SNe 2021aatd and 1987A with a self-developed semi-analytical code, assuming a two-component ejecta (core + shell), and involving the rotational energy of a newborn magnetar in addition to radioactive decay. Results. We find that the photometric and the spectroscopic evolution of SN 2021aatd can be well described with the explosion of a ∼15 M⊙ blue supergiant star. Nevertheless, SN 2021aatd shows higher temperatures and weaker Na I D and Ba II 6142 Å lines than SN 1987A, which is instead reminiscent of IIP-like atmospheres. With the applied two-component ejecta model (accounting for decay and magnetar energy), we can successfully describe the bolometric LC of SN 2021aatd, including the first ∼40-day phase showing an excess compared to 87A-like SNe, but being strikingly similar to that of the long-lived SN 2020faa. Nevertheless, finding a unified model that also explains the LCs of more luminous events (e.g., SN 2020faa) is still a matter of debate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study focused on visitors undertaking recreational activities at two important wetland conservation reserves with two main aims: to understand if visitors recognize the significant role of wetlands as vital bird habitat, and to understand the importance of birds as part of the visitor experience. We surveyed 511 visitors at two internationally significant urban wetlands in Perth, Western Australia. Results indicated that respondents valued wetland areas for exercising, aesthetic values, utility of infrastructure and general amenity, as well as the presence of birds. Some respondents perceived that the wetlands were important for birds and the presence of birds was generally rated highly. Results further indicated that while birds were generally not the focus of visitor experience, birds were an important component of that experience. We conclude that most visitors will generally support management actions aimed at conserving the wetlands and birdlife, and management actions do not need to consider a range of differing views across different recreational activities. Thus, understanding the extent that different recreational users of urban wetlands value birds and bird habitat provides vital insights into management approaches for conservation. Background: To explore how a vocational rehabilitation (VR) intervention can be integrated within existing healthcare services for people with multiple sclerosis (MS) in the United Kingdom (UK) National Health Service (NHS). Methods: Data from 37 semi-structured interviews with 22 people with MS, eight employers, and seven healthcare professionals were analysed using a framework method informed by the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research and an intervention logic model. Results: Four themes were identified relating to the structure of current NHS services, how to improve access to and awareness of VR services, the collaboration between internal and external networks, and the benefits of integrating VR within the NHS services. Participants identified several implementation barriers such as poor links with external organisations, staffing issues, and lack of funding. To overcome these barriers, participants suggested enablers such as technology (e.g., apps or online assessments) and collaboration with third-sector organisations to reduce the pressure on the NHS. Conclusion: Significant organisational changes are required to ensure a successful implementation of a VR intervention within current NHS services. Despite this, the NHS was seen as a trustworthy organisation to offer support that can optimise the health and professional lives of people with MS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To maximise energy efficiency, manta ray (Mobula alfredi, M. birostris) foraging and cleaning behaviours are thought to often be mutually exclusive, whereby individuals will only forage when prey density thresholds are met and will only clean when foraging is too energetically costly (i.e., thresholds are not met). Here, snorkel surveys and remote camera cleaning station footage show reef manta rays (M. alfredi) undertaking repetitive and short-term movements between surface-feeding and cleaning station visits around D'Arros Island, Seychelles. These observations demonstrate that foraging and cleaning behaviours are not mutually exclusive even when prey densities are high. At D'Arros Island, the proximity of cleaning stations to highly productive foraging areas may afford individuals the opportunity to undertake non-foraging activity without incurring significant energy loss from the shifts in behaviour. Mapping spatial variation in stable isotope values (isoscapes) of primary producers and consumers can provide insight into regional patterns of biogeochemistry and be used to trace the movements of mobile animals. Here we present carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isoscapes for an expansive region of the continental United States (Mid Atlantic Bight to the NW Gulf of Mexico) derived from inshore lizardfish (Synodus foetens) and explore temporal stability and environmental drivers of observed isotopic variation. We observed significant spatial variation in lizardfish δ13C and δ15N values throughout much of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, reflecting local biogeochemistry regimes. Extensive sampling throughout the northern Gulf of Mexico (NGOM) revealed positive relationships between lizardfish δ13C values and bottom temperature, likely reflecting lower carbon isotope discrimination between CO2 and phytoplankton in highly productive, warm, inshore environments. Conversely, δ15N values were not well explained by environmental parameters, but appeared higher in nearshore environments of the NGOM, which are heavily influenced by nitrogenous run-off from land. An isotopically unique region of high δ13C values and low δ15N values were observed for lizardfish sampled in the Eastern NGOM off the southwest coast of Florida, reflecting a potential influence of seagrass and/or macroalgal productivity supporting the base of the food web. Overall, these findings underscore the utility of benthic lizardfish stable isotopes for inferring local patterns of ocean biogeochemistry throughout expansive ocean environments. Scavenging on carrion is critical and often fiercely competitive for a range of vertebrate species, from native apex predators to invasive species and even reptiles. Within Australia, a notable reptilian scavenger is the lace monitor (Varanus varius). In this study, we quantified lace monitor activity at carcasses and compared their use of the resource to common co‐occurring predators that also scavenge; the invasive red fox (Vulpes vulpes) and a native apex predator, the dingo (Canis dingo). To do so, we deployed 80 macropod carcasses equally across seasons (summer and winter) and habitats (open and closed canopy) in a temperate bioregion and monitored vertebrate scavenging with camera traps. Lace monitor activity (visitation at carcass sites inclusive of both non‐scavenging and scavenging events) was 1.67 times higher in summer than in winter, but it did not differ across closed and open habitats. Monitor activity occurred earlier after carcass deployment at sites deployed in summer than winter (1.47‐fold earlier), and at carcasses in open than closed habitats (0.22‐fold earlier). Lace monitors initially discovered carcass sites faster in summer than winter and before both red foxes and dingoes in summer. The species was active diurnally in both summer and winter, differing from the red fox, which was strictly a nocturnal scavenger and the dingo, which was significantly more active at night across both seasons. Finally, we found that lace monitor activity at carcass sites decreased slightly with higher rates of activity for dingoes (0.04‐fold decrease as dingo activity increased), but not with red fox activity. Our results have implications for understanding lace monitor foraging and scavenging and highlight the value of monitoring carcasses to provide important insights into the behaviour of varanid lizards that scavenge. We observed lack of clarity and consistency in end point definitions of large randomized clinical trials in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. These inconsistencies are such that trials might, in fact, address different clinical questions. They complicate interpretation of results, including comparisons across studies. Problems arise from different ways to account for events occurring after randomization including absence of improvement in disease status, treatment discontinuation or the initiation of new therapy. We call for more dialogue between stakeholders to define with clarity the questions of interest and corresponding end points. We illustrate that assessing different end point rules across a range of plausible patient journeys can be a powerful tool to facilitate such a discussion and contribute to better understanding of patient-relevant end points. This article talks about the lack of clarity and consistency in the definitions of outcomes used in clinical trials that investigate new treatments for diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. In some trials, start of a new therapy for efficacy-related reasons is defined as an event, showing a focus on the anti-tumour activity of the drug. Additional considerations required for studies of treatment strategies with multiple interventions such as CAR-T or transplant strategies. The extent and origin of variation in the replication dynamics of complex DNA viruses is not well-defined. Here, we investigate the vaccinia virus (VACV) infection cycle at the single-cell level, quantifying the temporal dynamics of early and post(dna)-replicative phase gene expression across thousands of infections. We found that viral factors determine the initiation time of these phases, and this is influenced by the multiplicity of infection (MOI). In contrast, virus production dynamics are largely constrained by the host cell. Additionally, between-cell variability in infection start time and virus production rate were strongly influenced by MOI, providing evidence for cooperativity between infecting virions. Blocking programmed cell death by pan-caspase inhibition increased infection frequency but not virus production at the population level due to a concurrent attenuation of per-cell virus yield, suggesting a dual role for caspase signaling in VACV infection. Our findings provide key insights into the pivotal factors influencing heterogeneity in the infection cycle of a large DNA virus at the single-cell level. Author summary: The successful transmission and progression of a viral infection depends on the initial infectious virus dose, which in turn is defined by the efficiency of virus replication within host cells. Understanding what determines the productivity of individual cells, and the variability between them, is a central question in the emerging field of single-cell virology. Our study investigates the single-cell infection dynamics of vaccinia virus (VACV), a large, complex, DNA virus, revealing a profound influence of initial infectious dose on the timing and rate of progression of virus replication. Cells infected with a low dose take over three times longer to initiate virus production compared to those with a higher dose. However, the dynamics of the second phase of infection, de novo production of virus, are unperturbed by this variable: a higher infectious dose does not equate to a greater yield. Furthermore, we observed that the proportion of cells advancing to productive replication increases markedly with the virus dose. This effect is compounded by the suppression of apoptosis, a cell death process, suggesting that induction of apoptosis is effective in pruning the population of susceptible host cells. This has broad implications for the pathogenesis of viral diseases as the infectious dose will govern the window of opportunity for the host immune system to effectively respond to the infection. Background: Current practices in nephrostomy exchange are guided by institutional or societal expert-consensus rather than evidence-based recommendations. Objective: To examine the temporal distribution of exchanges and assess whether the observed distributions align with institutional, or expert-recommended guidelines where routine exchanges would be expected to occur within 60–89 days. Non-routine exchanges would be expected to occur either after 60 days or after 89 days. Methods: Data were collected from the Merative™ MarketScan Commercial Claims and Encounters Databases and included all patients who underwent a PCN exchange from 2009 to 2021. The dataset was queried using ICD-9/10 and CPT coding systems. Outpatient exchanges were classified as routine exchanges, whereas inpatient exchanges were classified as non-routine exchanges. Chi-Square Goodness-of-Fit tests were used to compare observed frequencies against expected distributions of routine exchanges within the 59–89 day window, and non-routine exchanges to occur after either 60 or after 89 days. Results: There was a total of 19,689 exchanges: of those, 41% (n = 8,058) exchange encounters occurred within 29 days, 67% (n = 13,213) occurred within 59 days, and 81% (n = 15,899) occurred within 89 days. Routine exchanges accounted for 76% of total exchanges: of those routine exchanges, 39% (n = 5,863) of routine exchanges occurred within 29 days, 67% (n = 10,057) occurred within 59 days, and 82% (n = 12,256) occurred within 89 days. Non-routine exchanges account for 24% of all exchanges in the study cohort. Of all non-routine exchanges (n = 4,737), 46% (n = 2,035) of non-routine exchange encounters occurred within 29 days, 67% (n = 3,156) within 60 days, and 77% (n = 3,643) within 89 days. Chi-square tests indicated significant deviations from the expected distributions for both routine (p < 0.01) and non-routine (p < 0.01) exchanges. Conclusion: A significant proportion of routine exchanges occur outside a 60–89 day window, and with a majority of routine exchange observations occurring prior to 59 days. A significant proportion of non-routine exchanges occur prior to 60 days and prior to 89 days. Clinical impact: Significant disparities between existing guidelines and clinical practice, underscoring the need for evidence-based guidelines to reduce complication rates, improve patient outcomes, and reduce the burden of cost on the healthcare system. Premise: Most traits are polygenic and most genes are pleiotropic, resulting in complex, integrated phenotypes. Polyploidy presents an excellent opportunity to explore the evolution of phenotypic integration as entire genomes are duplicated, allowing for new associations among traits and potentially leading to enhanced or reduced phenotypic integration. Despite the multivariate nature of phenotypic evolution, studies often rely on simplistic bivariate correlations that cannot accurately represent complex phenotypes or data reduction techniques that can obscure specific trait relationships. Methods: We apply network modeling, a common gene co‐expression analysis, to the study of phenotypic integration to identify multivariate patterns of phenotypic evolution, including anatomy and morphology (structural) and physiology (functional) traits in response to whole genome duplication in the genus Brassica. Results: We identify four key structural traits that are overrepresented in the evolution of phenotypic integration. Seeding networks with key traits allowed us to identify structure–function relationships not apparent from bivariate analyses. In general, allopolyploids exhibited larger, more robust networks indicative of increased phenotypic integration compared to diploids. Discussion: Phenotypic network analysis may provide important insights into the effects of selection on non‐target traits, even when they lack direct correlations with the target traits. Climate change has already displaced people from their homes and is predicted to displace millions more in the coming decades. Involuntary climate-induced migration causes loss and damage before, during, and after the displacement. In this Note, I argue that the climate displaced should seek tort compensation from fossil fuel companies for this loss and damage. However, the existing tort system is not well-suited for climate displacement claims. Challenges for climate-displaced plaintiffs include establishing jurisdiction, navigating forum non conveniens, proving causation, and enforcing a favorable judgment. Tort law must advance to overcome these barriers. Necessary judicial changes include expanding jurisdiction, modifying the forum non conveniens analysis, using attribution science and alternative theories of causation, and developing methods to ensure judgment enforcement. Global environmental change has redistributed earth's biomass and the inputs and dynamics of basal detrital resources in ecosystems, contributing to the decline of biodiversity. Yet efforts to manage detrital necromass for biodiversity conservation are often overlooked or consider only singular resource types for focal species groups. We argue there is a significant opportunity to broaden our perspective of the spatiotemporal complexity among multiple necromass types for innovative biodiversity conservation. Here, we introduce an ecosystem-scale perspective to disentangling the spatial and temporal characteristics of multiple and distinct forms of necromass and their associated biota. We show that terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems contain a diversity of necromass types, each with contrasting temporal frequencies and magnitudes, and spatial density and configurations. By conceptualising an ecosystem in this way, we demonstrate that specific necromass dynamics can be identified and targeted for management that benefits the unique spatiotemporal requirements of dependent decomposer organisms and their critical role in ecosystem biomass conversion and nutrient recycling. We encourage conservation practitioners to think about necromass quantity, timing of inputs, spatial dynamics, and to engage with researchers to deepen our knowledge of how necromass might be manipulated to exploit the distinct attributes of different necromass types to help meet biodiversity conservation goals. Purpose: This study tested the hypothesis that blood pressure responses would increase relative to force production in response to prolonged bouts of muscular work. Methods: Fifteen individuals performed two minutes of static handgrip (SHG; 35% MVC), followed by three minutes of post-exercise-cuff-occlusion (PECO), before and after thirty minutes of rest (control), or rhythmic handgrip exercise (RHG) of the contralateral and ipsilateral forearms. Beat-by-beat recordings of mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), and handgrip force (kg) were averaged across one-minute periods at baseline, and minutes 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 of RHG. MAP was also normalized to handgrip force, providing a relative measure of exercise pressor responses (mmHg/kg). Hemodynamic responses to SHG and PECO were also compared before and after contralateral RHG, ipsilateral RHG, and control, respectively. Similar to the RHG trial, areas under the curve were calculated for MAP (blood pressure index; BPI) and normalized to the time tension index (BPInorm). Results: HR and MAP significantly increased during RHG (15.3 ± 1.4% and 20.4 ± 3.2%, respectively, both p < 0.01), while force output decreased by up to 36.6 ± 8.0% (p < 0.01). This resulted in a 51.6 ± 9.4% increase in BPInorm during 30 min of RHG (p < 0.01). In contrast, blood pressure responses to SHG and PECO were unchanged following RHG (all p ≥ 0.07), and only the mean HR (4.2 ± 1.5%, p = 0.01) and ΔHR (67.2 ± 18.1%, p < 0.01) response to SHG were exaggerated following ipsilateral RHG. To provide updated national prevalence estimates of diagnosed attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), ADHD severity, co-occurring disorders, and receipt of ADHD medication and behavioral treatment among U.S. children and adolescents by demographic and clinical subgroups using data from the 2022 National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH). This study used 2022 NSCH data to estimate the prevalence of ever diagnosed and current ADHD among U.S. children aged 3–17 years. Among children with current ADHD, ADHD severity, presence of current co-occurring disorders, and receipt of medication and behavioral treatment were estimated. Weighted estimates were calculated overall and for demographic and clinical subgroups (n = 45,169). Approximately 1 in 9 U.S. children have ever received an ADHD diagnosis (11.4%, 7.1 million children) and 10.5% (6.5 million) had current ADHD. Among children with current ADHD, 58.1% had moderate or severe ADHD, 77.9% had at least one co-occurring disorder, approximately half of children with current ADHD (53.6%) received ADHD medication, and 44.4% had received behavioral treatment for ADHD in the past year; nearly one third (30.1%) did not receive any ADHD-specific treatment. Pediatric ADHD remains an ongoing and expanding public health concern, as approximately 1 million more children had ever received an ADHD diagnosis in 2022 than in 2016. Estimates from the 2022 NSCH provide information on pediatric ADHD during the last full year of the COVID-19 pandemic and can be used by policymakers, government agencies, health care systems, public health practitioners, and other partners to plan for needs of children with ADHD. Mammalian gut microbiomes differ within and among hosts. Hosts that occupy a broad range of environments may exhibit greater spatiotemporal variation in their microbiome than those constrained as specialists to narrower subsets of resources or habitats. This can occur if widespread host encounter a variety of ecological conditions that act to diversify their gut microbiomes and/or if generalized host species tend to form large populations that promote sharing and maintenance of diverse microbes. We studied spatiotemporal variation in the gut microbiomes of three co‐occurring rodent species across an environmental gradient in a Kenyan savanna. We hypothesized: (1) the taxonomic, phylogenetic, and functional compositions of gut microbiomes as predicted using the Phylogenetic Investigation of Communities by Reconstruction of Unobserved States (PICRUSt) differ significantly among host species; (2) microbiome richness increases with population size for all host species; and (3) host species exhibit different levels of seasonal change in their gut microbiomes, reflecting different sensitivities to the environment. We evaluated changes in gut microbiome composition according to host species identity, site, and host population size using three years of capture–mark–recapture data and 351 microbiome samples. Host species differed significantly in microbiome composition, though the two species with more specialized diets and higher demographic sensitivities showed only slightly greater microbiome variability than those of a widespread dietary generalist. Total microbiome richness increased significantly with host population size for all species, but only one of the more specialized species also exhibited greater individual‐level microbiome richness in large populations. Across co‐occurring rodent species with diverse diets and life histories, large host population sizes were associated both with greater population‐level microbiome richness (sampling effects) and turnover in the relative abundance of bacterial taxa (environmental effects), but there was no consistent pattern for individual‐level richness (individual specialization). Key Points: Question: What are the clinical implications of single or serial measurements of vibration–controlled transient elastography (VCTE)–based scores in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD)? Findings: In this cohort study of 16 603 patients with MASLD who underwent VCTE examination, the VCTE-based scores outperformed most noninvasive tests and were at least similar if not better than histologic fibrosis staging in predicting liver-related events. On repeated testing, the scores were largely stable, and patients with improvement in the scores had substantial reduction in the risk of liver-related events. Meaning: Findings of this study suggest that the VCTE-based scores are generally accurate for predicting liver-related events, making them suitable alternatives to liver biopsy in routine clinical practice and in phase 2b and 3 clinical trials for steatohepatitis. Importance: Metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is currently the most common chronic liver disease worldwide. It is important to develop noninvasive tests to assess the disease severity and prognosis. Objective: To study the prognostic implications of baseline levels and dynamic changes of the vibration-controlled transient elastography (VCTE)–based scores developed for the diagnosis of advanced fibrosis (Agile 3+) and cirrhosis (Agile 4) in patients with MASLD. Design, Setting, and Participants: This cohort study included data from a natural history cohort of patients with MASLD who underwent VCTE examination at 16 tertiary referral centers in the US, Europe, and Asia from February 2004 to January 2023, of which the data were collected prospectively at 14 centers. Eligible patients were adults aged at least 18 years with hepatic steatosis diagnosed by histologic methods (steatosis in ≥5% of hepatocytes) or imaging studies (ultrasonography, computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging, or controlled attenuation parameter ≥248 dB/m by VCTE). Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary outcome was liver-related events (LREs), defined as hepatocellular carcinoma or hepatic decompensation (ascites, variceal hemorrhage, hepatic encephalopathy, or hepatorenal syndrome), liver transplant, and liver-related deaths. The Agile scores were compared with histologic and 8 other noninvasive tests. Results: A total of 16 603 patients underwent VCTE examination at baseline (mean [SD] age, 52.5 [13.7] years; 9600 [57.8%] were male). At a median follow-up of 51.7 (IQR, 25.2-85.2) months, 316 patients (1.9%) developed LREs. Both Agile 3+ and Agile 4 scores classified fewer patients between the low and high cutoffs than most fibrosis scores and achieved the highest discriminatory power in predicting LREs (integrated area under the time-dependent receiver-operating characteristic curve, 0.89). A total of 10 920 patients (65.8%) had repeated VCTE examination at a median interval of 15 (IQR, 11.3-27.7) months and were included in the serial analysis. A total of 81.9% of patients (7208 of 8810) had stable Agile 3+ scores and 92.6% of patients (8163 of 8810) had stable Agile 4 scores (same risk categories at both assessments). The incidence of LREs was 0.6 per 1000 person-years in patients with persistently low Agile 3+ scores and 30.1 per 1000 person-years in patients with persistently high Agile 3+ scores. In patients with high Agile 3+ score at baseline, a decrease in the score by more than 20% was associated with substantial reduction in the risk of LREs. A similar trend was observed for the Agile 4 score, although it missed more LREs in the low-risk group. Conclusions and Relevance: Findings of this study suggest that single or serial Agile scores are highly accurate in predicting LREs in patients with MASLD, making them suitable alternatives to liver biopsy in routine clinical practice and in phase 2b and 3 clinical trials for steatohepatitis. Scavenging dynamics are influenced by many abiotic and biotic factors, but there is little knowledge of how scavengers respond to extreme weather events. As carrion is a major driver of the organisation and structure of food webs within ecological communities, understanding the response of scavengers to extreme weather events is critical in a world that is increasingly subject to climate change. In this study, vertebrate scavenging and carcass persistence rates were quantified in the Simpson Desert of central Australia; a system that experiences major fluctuations and extremes in weather conditions. Specifically, a total of 80 adult red kangaroo (Osphranter rufus) carcasses were placed on the landscape and monitored using remote sensor cameras. This included 40 carcasses monitored before and then 40 carcasses monitored after a major flooding event. The carcasses were monitored equally before and after the flood across different seasons (warm and cool) and in dune and interdune habitats. Overall, a total of 8124 scavenging events for 97,976 visitation minutes were recorded for 11 vertebrate species within 30 days of carcass placement pre- and post-flood. Vertebrate scavenging increased post-flood in the warm season, especially by corvids which quadrupled their scavenging events during this time. There was little difference in carcass persistence between habitats, but carcasses persisted 5.3-fold longer post-flood in warm seasons despite increased vertebrate scavenging.
