Purpose: The purpose of this study is to use a lifetime income measure to evaluate the long-run housing affordability for an understudied cohort of households in the literature – the millennials. The authors do this in the context of Malaysia, measuring long-run affordability for four housing types across geographic locations and income distributions. Design/methodology/approach: This study calculates a long-run housing affordability index (HAI) using data on house prices and household incomes. Essentially a ratio of predicted lifetime incomes to house prices, the HAI is computed for four common housing types in Malaysia from 2005 to 2016 and for six states in the country. The HAI is also compared across four income percentiles. Findings: The analysis reveals varying patterns of housing affordability among different states in Malaysia. Housing affordability has declined since 2010, with most housing types being unaffordable for millennial-led households with the lowest income. Housing is most affordable for those in the highest income bracket, although even here, there are pockets of unaffordable housing as well. Practical implications: Based on the findings, this study proposes three targeted interventions to improve housing affordability for Malaysian millennials. Background: Vaccination has been one of the most effective preventive strategies to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. However, as the COVID-19 vaccines' effect wanes off after some time and given their reduced level of protection against mutation strains of the virus, the calls for boosters and second boosters signal the need for continuous vaccination for the foreseeable future. As Malaysia transitions into the endemic phase, the nation's ability to co-exist with the virus in the endemic phase will hinge on people's continuance intention to be vaccinated against the virus. Adapting the expectations confirmation model (ECM) to the public health context and in a developing country, this study integrates the ECM with the health belief model (HBM) and the theory of reasoned action (TRA) to examine the inter-relationships of the predictors of people's continuance intention to vaccinate against COVID-19. Methodology: Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires from 1,914 respondents aged 18 and above by a marketing consulting firm via its online panel. The partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) technique was used to analyze the data. Results: Out of the 1,914 respondents, 55.9% reported having a continuance intention to vaccinate against COVID-19, similar to other developing countries. The multivariate analysis revealed that perceived usefulness and satisfaction significantly influenced individuals' continuance intention to vaccinate against COVID-19. Additionally, attitude was found to play a key role in influencing behavioral change among individuals towards their perceptions of continuously getting vaccinated against COVID-19. Conclusions: By integrating three theoretical frameworks (i.e., HBM, TRA and ECM), this study showed that behavioral characteristics could provide insights towards continuance vaccination intention. Hence, policymakers and key stakeholders can develop effective public health strategies or interventions to encourage vaccine booster uptake by targeting behavioral factors such as perceived usefulness, attitude, satisfaction, and subjective norms. Background: There are no standard mapping approaches for patients with persistent atrial fibrillation (PeAF), particularly after failed prior catheter ablation (CA). In this study, we assess the feasibility of using Electrogram Morphology Recurrence (EMR) to guide ablation. Methods: Ten patients with recurrent PeAF after prior CA underwent detailed mapping of both atria during PeAF using the PentaRay (4 mm interelectrode spacing) and 3D mapping with CARTO. At each site, 15 s recordings were made. Custom software identified each electrogram and cross-correlation was used to identify the most recurrent electrogram morphology from which the % recurrence and cycle length of the most repeatable morphology (CLR) was calculated. Sites of shortest CLR and sites within 5 ms of shortest CLR with recurrence ≥ 80% were used to inform CA strategy. Results: A mean of 342.9 ± 131.9 LA and 328.6 ± 91.5 RA sites were recorded per patient. Nine had PV reconnection. Shortest CLR sites guided ablation in 6/10 patients while 1 patient failed to fulfill shortest CLR criteria, and another 3 did not undergo CA guided by shortest CLR due to operator preference. On 12-month follow-up, all 4 patients without shortest CLR guided CA had recurrent PeAF. Of the 6 patients with shortest CLR guided CA, 5 patients did not have recurrent PeAF (p = 0.048), although 1 had paroxysmal AF and 2 had atypical atrial flutter. Conclusion: EMR is a feasible, novel technique to guide CA in patients with PeAF. Introduction: Multiple analysis techniques evaluate electrograms during atrial fibrillation (AF), but none have been established to guide catheter ablation. This study compares electrogram properties recorded from multiple right (RA) and left atrial (LA) sites. Methods: Multisite LA/RA mapping (281 ± 176/239 ± 166 sites/patient) was performed in 42 patients (30 males, age 63 ± 9 years) undergoing first (n = 32) or redo‐AF ablation (n = 10). All electrogram recordings were visually reviewed and artifactual signals were excluded leaving a total of 21 846 for analysis. Electrogram characteristics evaluated were cycle length (CL), amplitude, Shannon's entropy (ShEn), fractionation interval, dominant frequency, organizational index, and cycle length of most recurrent morphology (CLR) from morphology recurrence plot analysis. Results: Electrogram characteristics were correlated to each other. All pairwise comparisons were significant (p <.001) except for dominant frequency and CLR (p =.59), and amplitude and dominant frequency (p =.38). Only ShEn and fractionation interval demonstrated a strong negative correlation (r = −.94). All other pairwise comparisons were poor to moderately correlated. The relationships are highly conserved among patients, in the RA versus LA, and in those undergoing initial versus redo ablations. Antiarrhythmic drug therapy did not have a significant effect on electrogram characteristics, except minimum ShEn. Electrogram characteristics associated with ablation outcome were shorter minimum CLR, lower minimum ShEn, and longer mimimum CL. There was minimal overlap between the top 10 sites identified by one electrogram characteristic and the top 10 sites identified by the other 10 characteristics. Conclusion: Multiple techniques can be employed for electrogram analysis in AF. In this analysis of eight different electrogram characteristics, seven were poorly to moderately correlated and do not identify similar locations. Only some characteristics were predictive of ablation outcome. Further studies to consider electrogram properties, perhaps in combination, for categorizing and/or mapping AF are warranted. The COVID-19 pandemic has revolutionized the teaching pedagogy in higher education as universities are forecasted to increase investments in learning technology infrastructure to transition away from traditional teaching methods. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate whether academics intend to continually integrate learning technologies as part of a permanent pedagogical change beyond the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing upon the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), and Expectation Confirmation Model (ECM), this study examines the salient determinants influencing the continuance intention of academics to use learning technologies in their teaching pedagogy during and after COVID-19. Primary data collected from a private university was analyzed using the partial least squares structural equation modelling technique (PLS-SEM). The findings revealed two sequential mediating relationships which serve as the mechanism linking the relationship between facilitating conditions and their continuance intention to use learning technologies during and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic. Voluntary intake of cold fluid is greater than warm fluid as a result of more favorable palatability, resulting in better maintenance of hydration status and improved exercise performance. It remains unclear whether voluntary ingestion of ice slurry beverages compared with cold fluid during exercise yields superior results. Eight recreationally active subjects (mean ± SD; age = 24 ± 4 years, height = 175.2 ± 7.8 cm, mass = 79.6 ± 11.2 kg, body fat = 13.0 ± 5.2%) completed a pretest in 22° C to determine maximal workload (Wmax). Then, in 2, separate, counterbalanced trials, they cycled for 60 minutes at 50%Wmax in 35° C and 40% relative humidity with either ad libitum ice slurry (-1.3 ± 0.3° C) or cold fluid (11.1 ± 2.4° C) ingestion. This was immediately followed by a 15-minute cycling time trial. Subjects avoided 2% body mass loss in both conditions but ingested twice as much cold fluid as ice slurry (fluid: 1,074.7 ± 442.1 g, ice slurry: 526.9 ± 214.1 g; p = 0.001). Nonetheless, neither 15-minute performances (cold fluid: 119.5 ± 34.8 kJ, ice slurry: 114.6 ± 20.9 kJ; p = 0.59) nor whole-body sweat rates (fluid: 1,370 ± 311 ml·h-1, ice slurry: 1,242 ± 191 ml·h-1; p = 0.20) were different between the conditions. Despite ingesting half as much ice slurry as cold fluid, subjects experienced similar physiological responses and thus had similar performances under heat stress while avoiding excessive hypohydration. Background: Sporadic outbreaks of COVID-19 remain a threat to public healthcare, especially if vaccination levels do not improve. As Malaysia begins its transition into the endemic phase, it is essential to identify the key determinants of COVID-19 vaccination intention amongst the pockets of the population who are still hesitant. Therefore, focusing on a sample of individuals who did not register for the COVID-19 vaccination, the current study integrated two widely used frameworks in the public health domain—the health belief model (HBM) and the theory of reasoned action (TRA)—to examine the inter-relationships of the predictors of vaccination intention amongst these individuals. Methodology: Primary data from 117 respondents who did not register for the COVID-19 vaccination were collected using self-administered questionnaires to capture predictors of vaccination intention amongst individuals in a Malaysian context. The partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) technique was used to analyze the data. Results: Subjective norms and attitude play key mediating roles between the HBM factors and vaccination intention amongst the unregistered respondents. In particular, subjective norms mediate the relationship between cues to action and vaccination intention, highlighting the significance of important others to influence unregistered individuals who are already exposed to information from mass media and interpersonal discussions regarding vaccines. Trust, perceived susceptibility, and perceived benefits indirectly influence vaccination intention through attitude, indicating that one's attitude is vital in promoting behavioral change. Conclusion: This study showed that the behavioral factors could help understand the reasons for vaccine refusal or acceptance, and shape and improve health interventions, particularly among the vaccine-hesitant group in a developing country. Therefore, policymakers and key stakeholders can develop effective strategies or interventions to encourage vaccination amongst the unvaccinated for future health pandemics by targeting subjective norms and attitude. This study focuses on students from vulnerable communities who are at the bottom 40% of the population income distribution in a developing country. These students are more likely to face challenges in accessing quality education, with many having a high propensity to drop out of school. Computer-aided education is one way to increase academic enthusiasm and creativity amongst these students to enable them to complete their studies and acquire skills for an information-driven society. Drawing upon the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model, this study examines the key factors influencing computer use for learning amongst students and if a computer-aided learning experience can lead to improved academic enthusiasm and creativity. Primary data collected from 414 primary school students from the targeted segment of the population was analysed using the partial least squares structural equation modelling technique (PLS-SEM). The findings revealed that performance expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions determined students' computer use for learning. Additionally, computer use for learning influenced the academic enthusiasm and creativity of students. The findings offer insights on the potential implications in the formulation of computer-based education initiatives for students from a vulnerable group in a developing country context. An emerging body of evidence suggests a causal relationship between wellbeing and incumbent voting. However, the evidence is primarily founded upon established democracies with regular turnovers of power. Moreover, the mechanism underlying this relationship is still relatively unknown. Using the intricacies of the Malaysian political context and Malaysian data from the seventh wave of the World Values Survey (WVS), this study examines the mediating role of trust in government to explain the relationship between life satisfaction and incumbent voting. Notably, the Malaysian WVS was concluded two weeks before Malaysia's fourteenth general election (GE14), which witnessed the end of the ruling coalition's six-decade hold on power since independence and subsequently ushered in the country's first-ever peaceful transfer of power. The empirical analysis indicated that the mediating role of trust in the relationship between life satisfaction and incumbent voting is supported. Further empirical analysis also showed that the mediating effect of trust was unique to the GE14 context compared to GE13, thus providing a better understanding of the role trust plays in the outcome of the election. Background: As the vaccination drive against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Malaysia progresses rapidly, the main challenge will gradually shift from procuring and distributing vaccines to ensuring the broadest possible acceptance among all population segments. Therefore, this study used the integrated framework of the health belief model (HBM) and the theory of reasoned action (TRA) to investigate the predictors of intention to receive COVID-19 vaccines in Malaysia. Methodology: A market research company in Malaysia was engaged to collect data during June 11–20, 2021 using self-administered questionnaires via its online panel, ensuring a nationwide random sample of 804 respondents. A logistic regression was subsequently estimated to determine the significant predictors of vaccination intention. Results: The predictors that significantly affect COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in Malaysia are age, susceptibility, religious beliefs, attitude, subjective norms, and trust in the vaccine. In particular, those who are more inclined to get vaccinated are older individuals, have a higher perceived risk of infection and social pressure to get vaccinated, have a positive attitude, and have high levels of trust in the vaccine. Individuals' who perceive that their religious beliefs are against vaccination are more likely to exhibit uncertainty toward it. Conclusion: This study showed that although a large proportion of respondents indicated that they were willing to be vaccinated against COVID-19, there are concerns about religious barriers and trust in the vaccine that the relevant stakeholders should address. Campaigns should also focus on shaping the nation's attitude toward COVID-19 vaccines, in parallel with encouraging people to use their social influence in helping those in their close circle who are unsure of vaccination to cross the line. A scoring criterion of three-or-more letters correct on a line results in the most equivalent visual acuity score to letter-by-letter scoring. Using the criterion of three-or-more letters correct on a line of five letters to measure a line visual acuity is common. In this study, different line acuity criteria are compared to letter-by-letter visual acuity scoring to determine which criterion is the most accurate as well as least variable. One eye each of 32 subjects was tested with high-contrast visual acuity charts at 4.88 m. Subjects had 16 acuities measured: 8 under normal conditions and 8 under a + 1.50D blur condition. For each set of 8, logMAR visual acuity results were obtained by retrospectively applying each of four scoring criteria twice: letter-by-letter acuity and three line acuities (three-or-more, four-or-more, or five correct on a line). Differences in means were analysed using repeated measures ANOVA with post-hoc Tukey testing. Test-retest variability was analysed via Bland-Altman analysis The mean visual acuities (in logMAR) were −0.10, −0.11, −0.07, and −0.01 for letter-by-letter, three-or-more correct, four-or-more correct, and all five correct, respectively. With blur, the mean visual acuities were 0.41, 0.39, 0.45, and 0.53 for the respective criteria. Under both normal and blur conditions, the different acuity scoring criteria resulted in significant differences (p < 0.001), except for the letter-by-letter and three-or-more criteria (p ≥ 0.18). Whereas the criteria resulted in similar test-retest variability under blur, the line acuity using a criterion of three-or-more letters correct resulted in the lowest test-retest variability under best-corrected conditions. A line visual acuity scoring criterion of three-or-more letters correct on a line, whether with good visual acuity or poorer visual acuity due to defocus, provides the most similar acuity and test-retest variability compared to letter-by-letter visual acuity. Oil-laden (OL) foams could serve an important role in various processes, particularly in enhanced oil recovery; however, OL foams are less studied than aqueous foams. In this work, the formation and stability of OL foam, by either sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) or Triton X-100 (TX-100) in water-pentane mixture, was evaluated. We first constructed a diagram of good and poor foaminess against pentane content in the mixture and aqueous surfactant concentration. It was shown that surfactant onset concentration for good foaming was increased with increasing pentane content. The result was fitted using a mathematical model that considers the surfactant dilution and adsorption effects by pentane. Foam height decay profiles were also monitored. Results indicated that SDS resulted in a more stable foam than TX-100 at the same critical micelle concentration (CMC). Depending on surfactant concentration, OL foams exhibited strikingly different stability behaviours. Pentane acted as an anti-foamer at surfactant concentrations at the CMC or lower. However, very high foam stability was displayed at high surfactant concentration (e.g., 3x CMC) and medium to high pentane contents; this is a result contradictory to the predication of entering, spreading, and bridging coefficients in the classic theory. This article focuses on identifying the variable which has the highest predictive power in predicting electoral behaviour. To do this, we apply a tree-based machine learning technique to data from Malaysia's 14th General Election. We find that constituencies' urbanization level has the most significant predictive power in determining vote share. Ethnicity, a long-touted variable of significance, plays a secondary role. Moreover, these predictors' marginal effects on the vote share are highly complex, non-linear and difficult to pick up by conventional regression [End Page 461] methods. Other explanatory factors do not exhibit significant predictive qualities of electoral behaviour, although the extant literature has shown them to have important causal relationships. As our analysis reflects the significant predictive power of urbanization in predicting voting behaviour, we caution against the haste to dismiss its relevance in the Malaysian context. During childhood, varying exercise modalities are recommended to stimulate normal growth, development, and health. This project investigated hormonal and metabolic responses triggered by a resistance exercise protocol in lean children (age: 9.3 ± 1.4 y, body fat: 18.3 ± 4.9%), obese children (age: 9.6 ± 1.3 y, body fat: 40.3 ± 5.2%) and lean adults (age: 23.3 ± 2.4 y, body fat: 12.7 ± 2.9%). The protocol consisted of stepping onto a raised platform (height = 20% of stature) while wearing a weighted vest (resistance = 50% of lean body mass). Participants completed 6 sets of 10 repetitions per leg with a 1-min rest period between sets. Blood samples were obtained at rest preexercise, immediately postexercise and 2 times throughout the 1-hr recovery to analyze possible changes in hormones and metabolites. Children-adult differences included a larger exercise-induced norepinephrine increase in adults vs. children and a decrease in glucagon in children but not adults. Similarities between adults and children were observed for GH-IGF-1 axis responses. Metabolically, children presented with lower glycolytic and increased fat metabolism after exercise than adults did. Obesity in childhood negatively influenced GH, insulin, and glucose concentrations. While adults occasionally differed from children, amount of activated lean mass, not maturation, likely drove these dissimilarities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The 14th Malaysian general elections (GE14) resulted in a regime change not experienced since independence. While ethnicity has been an overriding factor in determining electoral outcomes, urbanization has recently been considered a competing factor that might weaken the effects of ethnicity. Using a new methodology to model the compositional effects of ethnicity, we analyse the effects of both factors on the GE14 in our regression models. The findings show that both ethnicity and urban development do affect electoral outcomes, with ethnicity being the more dominant factor. Additionally, multivariate results show that neither malapportionment nor redelineation explains electoral outcomes. We provide a dissection of the 'Malaysian tsunami' examining vote change patterns between GE13 and GE14 using an ethnic and rural-urban continuum. The analysis reveals that effects of the tsunami are not evenly spread across ethnic groups and geographical regions, with the Malay majority and ethnically mixed seats displaying contrasting voting patterns. Intravenous (IV) ketamine has been shown to have rapid and robust antidepressant effects in adults with treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Urological toxicity has been observed in chronic ketamine abusers as evidenced by dysuria, urgency, and hematuria. The foregoing observation provides the basis for evaluating whether ketamine-induced urological toxicity (KIUT) is associated with sub-anesthetic doses of ketamine (0.5–1.0 mg/kg) in adults with mood disorders. The overarching objective of this article is to identify potential mechanisms of KIUT which appears to be dose and frequency dependent. Available research indicates that high-frequency ketamine is associated with disruption of the urothelial barrier as well as direct ketamine toxicity (i.e., decreased expression of junction proteins) in KIUT of the bladder. Chronic and high-frequency ketamine use is also associated with bladder inflammation mediated via neurogenic and IgE inflammation. Other non-mutually exclusive causes are nerve hyperplasia, hypersensitivity, cell apoptosis, microvascular damage, and overexpression of carcinogenic genes. Notwithstanding the evidence of KIUT in ketamine abusers, there is no evidence that ketamine and/or esketamine treatment in adults with mood disorders is associated with KIUT. However, all patients receiving ketamine/esketamine for mood disorder treatment should be queried about genitourinary symptoms during acute and, where applicable, maintenance dosing. Severe material deprivation, a dimension of the poverty and social exclusion index, one of Europe 2020 Strategy headline indicators, is defined as enforced lack of at least four of nine specific items. Proposals for modifications in the indicator include the Material and Social Deprivation indicator which is based on an updated set of thirteen items, whereas the choice of the threshold was data-driven. This paper proposes a simple, yet a rigorous methodology based on the Youden index to set a threshold to classify individuals into 'deprived' and 'non-deprived' groups. Applying the Youden index to 2014–2018 EU-Statistics on Income and Living Conditions data suggests an optimal cut-off point of the value of 5. This is in line with the suggestions of the Indicators Sub-Group of the Social Protection Committee. The estimated rates of material deprivation based on the new indicator are 2.2-times higher on average than the current rate. Assuming that the newly proposed definition better reflects the true nature of deprivation in the EU, the aggregate measure of 'at risk of poverty or social exclusion' has been underestimated, as material deprivation is one of its three dimensions. Summary: Root system architecture (RSA) influences the effectiveness of resources acquisition from soils but the genetic networks that control RSA remain largely unclear.We used rhizoboxes, X‐ray computed tomography, grafting, auxin transport measurements and hormone quantification to demonstrate that Arabidopsis and Medicago CEP (C‐TERMINALLY ENCODED PEPTIDE)‐CEP RECEPTOR signalling controls RSA, the gravitropic set‐point angle (GSA) of lateral roots (LRs), auxin levels and auxin transport.We showed that soil‐grown Arabidopsis and Medicago CEP receptor mutants have a narrower RSA, which results from a steeper LR GSA. Grafting showed that CEPR1 in the shoot controls GSA. CEP receptor mutants exhibited an increase in rootward auxin transport and elevated shoot auxin levels. Consistently, the application of auxin to wild‐type shoots induced a steeper GSA and auxin transport inhibitors counteracted the CEP receptor mutant's steep GSA phenotype. Concordantly, CEP peptides increased GSA and inhibited rootward auxin transport in wild‐type but not in CEP receptor mutants.The results indicated that CEP–CEP receptor‐dependent signalling outputs in Arabidopsis and Medicago control overall RSA, LR GSA, shoot auxin levels and rootward auxin transport. Technology-enhanced learning has attracted increasing attention of educational community focused on improvement of traditional classroom learning. Augmented immersive reality (AIR) technologies enhance users’ perception of reality by augmenting it with computer-generated components such as audio, video, 2/3-D graphics, GPS data, etc. The AIR introduces new dimensions of learning experience that ensure better attention, focus, and entertainment, thereby boosting students’ motivation and attainment. This work presents an award winning AIR-based educational mobile system, code-named AIR-EDUTECH, that was developed to help high school students learn chemistry. The AIR-EDUTECH introduced new AIR features to help students better understand and learn basic concepts of molecular chemistry. It offers immersive 3D visualization and visual interaction with the examined structures that provides a broader and more retentive knowledge and improves intuition around forming basic chemical reactions. The system was introduced and tested in a field study with 45 students in the $11^{th}$ grade chemistry class, and its impact was evaluated by the formal assessment quiz along with the feedback from survey conducted after the trial. Collected data have been subjected to an in-depth multi-modal quantitative analysis that revealed that AIR-EDUTECH stimulated significant improvements in understanding and retention of the taught content as well as turned learning chemistry into a fun, interesting and interactive experience. It also uncovered a hidden structure of taught knowledge dependencies and highlighted the role that AIR technology could play in reinforcing the retention of critical knowledge that may otherwise widen student knowledge gaps. The development of root nodules leads to an increased auxin response in early nodule primordia, which is mediated by changes in acropetal auxin transport in some legumes. Here, we investigated the role of root basipetal auxin transport during nodulation. Rhizobia inoculation significantly increased basipetal auxin transport in both Medicago truncatula and Lotus japonicus. In M. truncatula , this increase was dependent on functional Nod factor signalling through NFP , NIN , and NSP2 , as well as ethylene signalling through SKL. To test whether increased basipetal auxin transport is required for nodulation, we examined a loss-of-function mutant of the M. truncatula PIN2 gene. The Mtpin2 mutant exhibited a reduction in basipetal auxin transport and an agravitropic phenotype. Inoculation of Mtpin2 roots with rhizobia still led to a moderate increase in basipetal auxin transport, but the mutant nodulated normally. No clear differences in auxin response were observed during nodule development. Interestingly, inoculation of wild-type roots increased lateral root numbers, whereas inoculation of Mtpin2 mutants resulted in reduced lateral root numbers compared with uninoculated roots. We conclude that the MtPIN2 auxin transporter is involved in basipetal auxin transport, that its function is not essential for nodulation, but that it plays an important role in the control of lateral root development. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to measure the long-run housing affordability of Malaysia over time for households at various income levels and to demonstrate how short- and long-run affordability measures can reach contradicting conclusions. Design/methodology/approach: In this study, a long-run housing affordability index (HAI) for Malaysia was constructed for the sample period 1995 to 2014, using data from house prices and household incomes. The HAI was also modified to compute a mortgage affordability index (MAI) to account for intergenerational transfers. Findings: The results show that households at the 25th income percentile cannot afford any of the four dwelling types in Malaysia. For households at the 40th income percentile and the median income levels, high-rise and terrace housing are affordable. However, significant downward trends in HAI and MAI are documented beginning 2009, which indicates increasing housing stress for households at or below the median income. The short-run affordability measure represented by the median multiple (MM) indicator showed bleaker conclusion for housing affordability, with all dwelling types considered unaffordable over the entire sample period Practical implications: On the basis of the empirical results, this paper provided several long-term proposals to ameliorate the housing affordability problem in Malaysia. Originality/value: With the MM ratio being the official affordability measure reported for Malaysia, this study introduces the nation's first long-run housing affordability measure. It is hoped that this long-run measure will achieve widespread adoption in Malaysia. Given the deteriorating long-term affordability, this study offers several possible long-term solutions. Actinorhizal nodules are structurally different from legume nodules and show a greater similarity to lateral roots. Because of the important role of auxins in lateral root and nodule formation, auxin profiles were examined in roots and nodules of the actinorhizal species Datisca glomerata and the model legume Medicago truncatula. The auxin response in roots and nodules of both species was analyzed in transgenic root systems expressing a beta-glucuronidase gene under control of the synthetic auxin-responsive promoter DR5. The effects of two different auxin on root development were compared for both species. The auxin present in nodules at the highest levels was phenylacetic acid (PAA). No differences were found between the concentrations of active auxins of roots vs. nodules, while levels of the auxin conjugate indole-3-acetic acid-alanine were increased in nodules compared to roots of both species. Because auxins typically act in concert with cytokinins, cytokinins were also quantified. Concentrations of cis -zeatin and some glycosylated cytokinins were dramatically increased in nodules compared to roots of D. glomerata , but not of M. truncatula. The ratio of active auxins to cytokinins remained similar in nodules compared to roots in both species. The auxin response, as shown by the activation of the DR5 promoter, seemed significantly reduced in nodules compared to roots of both species, suggesting the accumulation of auxins in cell types that do not express the signal transduction pathway leading to DR5 activation. Effects on root development were analyzed for the synthetic auxin naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and PAA, the dominant auxin in nodules. Both auxins had similar effects, except that the sensitivity of roots to PAA was lower than to NAA. However, while the effects of both auxins on primary root growth were similar for both species, effects on root branching were different: both auxins had the classical positive effect on root branching in M. truncatula , but a negative effect in D. glomerata. Such a negative effect of exogenous auxin on root branching has previously been found for a cucurbit that forms lateral root primordia in the meristem of the parental root; however, root branching in D. glomerata does not follow that pattern. Cardiovascular (CV) drift, the progressive increase in heart rate (HR) and decrease in stroke volume (SV) during constant rate, moderate intensity exercise, is related to reduced maximal oxygen uptake (V̇O2max) during heat stress. Once it has already occurred, it is unknown whether the detrimental effects of CV drift on V̇O2max can be reversed. This study tested the hypothesis that fan cooling after CV drift has occurred attenuates decrements in V̇O2max associated with CV drift. Eight men completed a control graded exercise test (GXT) in 22°C to measure V̇O2max. Then on separate, counterbalanced occasions, they completed one 15-min (15MIN) and two 45-min bouts (45NF and 45FAN) of cycling in 35°C, 40% RH at 60% V̇O2max, each immediately followed by a GXT to measure V̇O2max. For one of the 45-min trials (45FAN), fan airflow (4.5 m/s) was directed at participants beginning ~5 min before the GXT and continuing throughout the remainder of exercise. The purpose of the separate 15- and 45-min trials was to measure V̇O2max during the same time interval that CV drift occurred. HR increased (13.8% and 11.4%) and SV decreased (14.4% and 14.1%) for 45NF and 45FAN, respectively; trials were not different (all P > 0.05). Despite a decrease in mean skin temperature of ~1°C with fan use, V̇O2max decreased similarly between conditions (17% vs. 15% for 45NF and 45FAN, P = 0.54). Fan cooling after CV drift was insufficient to reverse the negative consequences of CV drift on V̇O2max after prolonged exercise in a hot environment. Purpose: Conflicting findings exist in the literature with regard to the relationship between iris color, ethnicity, macular pigment optical density (MPOD), and hue discrimination. This study re-examined these relationships, accounting for factors that may have confounded prior studies. Clinically, the relationship between MPOD and hue discrimination may impact the utility of macular pigment supplementation as a treatment for conditions such as macular degeneration. Methods: Subjects (n = 30, mean/SD age = 25.1/2.5 yrs.) with normal color vision completed MPOD testing and Farnsworth-Munsell 100 hue (FM100) testing. MPOD data was derived from the average of three measurements using the QuantifEYE II device and FM100 testing included training runs. The total error score of the FM100 test was used for analysis. Iris color was determined subjectively, while iris reflectance was derived using calibrated iris images. Spearman correlations were used to determine the relationship between MPOD and FM100 test scores. Kruskal-Wallis testing was used to investigate MPOD differences among different ethnicities and iris colors. Results: MPODs were normally distributed with a mean/SD = 0.38/0.13. Total error scores had a mean/SD of 10.7/9.7, but were not normally distributed. Iris reflectances had a mean/SD = 11.0/8.7. MPODs were not correlated to total error scores (p = 0.93). MPODs were also not correlated with iris reflectances (p = 0.28) even though MPODs differed significantly by iris color (brown = 0.44, hazel = 0.31, blue = 0.33, p = 0.04). Iris reflectances were not correlated with total error scores (p = 0.68). MPODs differed significantly (p = 0.003) between Asian and Caucasian subjects, 0.44 and 0.33, respectively. Conclusions: This study did not find a correlation between MPOD and hue discrimination as in some previous studies. While MPOD was associated with iris color and ethnicity as found in prior studies, it was not associated with iris reflectance, which may be a better indicator of ocular pigmentation compared to either iris color or ethnicity. INTRODUCTION: Precooling with ice slurry ingestion attenuates the increase in rectal temperature (Tre) during subsequent running and cycling. It remains unclear how this cooling method affects physiological strain during work while wearing protective garments. This study investigated the effect of ice slurry ingestion on physiological strain during work in hot conditions while wearing firefighter protective clothing. METHODS: In three counterbalanced trials, eight men (mean ± SD; age = 21 ± 2 yr, height = 179.5 ± 3.5 cm, mass = 79.1 ± 4.1 kg, body fat = 11.4 ± 3.7%) wore firefighter protective clothing and walked (4 km • h-1 12% incline, ~7 METs) for 30 min in hot conditions (35°C, 40% RH). Every 2.5 min, subjects ingested 1.25 g - kg-1 (relative total: 15 g - kg"1, absolute total: 1186.7 ± 61.3 g) of a tepid (22.4 ± 1.7°C), cold (7.1 ± 1.5°C), or ice slurry (-1.3 ± 0.2°C) beverage. RESULTS: Heart rates (HR) were lower with ice slurry ingestion compared to both fluid trials starting 5 min into exercise (tepid = 158 ± 14, cold = 157 ±11, ice slurry = 146 ± 1 3 bpm) and persisting for the remainder of the bout (min 30: tepid = 196 ± 10, cold = 192 ±10, ice slurry = 181 ± 13 bpm).Tre was lower with ice slurry ingestion compared to cold and tepid trials (min 5: tepid = 37.17 ± 0.38, cold = 37.17 ± 0.39, ice slurry = 37.05 ± 0.43°C; min 30: tepid = 38.15 ± 0.29, cold = 38.31 ± 0.36, ice slurry = 37.95 ± 0.32°C).The physiological strain index (PSI) was lower with ice slurry ingestion compared to fluid trials starting at min 5 (tepid = 3.8 ± 0.7, cold = 3.8 ± 0.6, ice slurry = 3.0 ± 0.5) and remained lower throughout exercise (min 30: tepid = 8.2 ± 0.6, cold = 8.3 ± 0.9, ice slurry = 6.9 ± 1.2). DISCUSSION: A large quantity of ice slurry ingested under non-compensable heat stress conditions mitigated physiological strain during exercise by blunting the rise in heart rate and rectal temperature. Legumes enter into a symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing rhizobia, leading to nodule development. Two main types of nodules have been widely studied, indeterminate and determinate, which differ in the location of the first cell division in the root cortex, and persistency of the nodule meristem. Here, we compared the control of auxin transport, content, and response during the early stages of indeterminate and determinate nodule development in the model legumes Medicago truncatula and Lotus japonicus, respectively, to investigate whether differences in auxin transport control could explain the differences in the location of cortical cell divisions. While auxin responses were activated in dividing cortical cells during nodulation of both nodule types, auxin (indole-3-acetic acid) content at the nodule initiation site was transiently increased in M. truncatula, but transiently reduced in L. japonicus. Root acropetal auxin transport was reduced in M. truncatula at the very start of nodule initiation, in contrast to a prolonged increase in acropetal auxin transport in L. japonicus. The auxin transport inhibitors 2,3,5-triiodobenzoic acid and 1-N-naphthylphthalamic acid (NPA) only induced pseudonodules in legume species forming indeterminate nodules, but failed to elicit such structures in a range of species forming determinate nodules. The development of these pseudonodules in M. truncatula exhibited increased auxin responses in a small primordium formed from the pericycle, endodermis, and inner cortex, similar to rhizobia-induced nodule primordia. In contrast, a diffuse cortical auxin response and no associated cortical cell divisions were found in L. japonicus. Collectively, we hypothesize that a step of acropetal auxin transport inhibition is unique to the process of indeterminate nodule development, leading to auxin responses in pericycle, endodermis, and inner cortex cells, while increased auxin responses in outer cortex cells likely require a different mechanism during the formation of determinate nodules. BACKGROUND: Heat stress limits endurance exercise performance. Combining precooling and warm-up prior to endurance exercise in the heat may exploit the benefits o f both strategies while avoiding the potential negative consequences o f each. This study tested the hypothesis that precooling combined with warm-up improves time trial cycling performance in the heat relative to either treatment alone. METHODS : Nine healthy men completed three 16.1-km time trials in 33°C after: 1) precooling (ice slurry and ice vest) alone (PREC);2) warm-up alone (WU); or 3) PREC plus WU (COMBO). RESULTS : Tre was lower after PREC compared to WU throughout exercise and lower than COMBO for the first 1 2 km; COMBO was lower than WU for the first 4 km.Tsk during PREC was lower than COMBO and WU for the first 8 km, and lower in COMBO than WU for the first 4 km. PREC lowered pre-exercise heart rate relative to COMBO and WU (68 ± 10,106 ± 12,101 ± 13 bpm, respectively), but it increased similarly during exercise. Local sweat rate (SR) was lower in PREC (0.1 ± 0.1 mg • cm-2 • min-1) than COMBO (0.5 ± 0.2 mg • cm-2 • min-1) and WU (0.6 ± 0.2 mg • cm-2 - min-1) for the first 4 km. Treatments did not differentially affect performance (PREC = 31.9 ± 1.9 min, COMBO = 32.6 ± 2.7 min, WU = 33.1 ± 2.9 min). Most legumes can form a unique type of lateral organ on their roots: root nodules. These structures host symbiotic nitrogen-fixing bacteria called rhizobia. Several different types of nodules can be found in nature, but the two beststudied types are called indeterminate and determinate nodules. These two types differ with respect to the presence or absence of a persistent nodule meristem, which consistently correlates with the cortical cell layers giving rise to the nodule primordia. Similar to other plant developmental processes, auxin signalling overlaps with the site of organ initiation and meristem activity. Here, we review how auxin contributes to early nodule development. We focus on changes in auxin transport, signalling, and metabolism during nodule initiation, describing both experimental evidence and computer modelling. We discuss how indeterminate and determinate nodules may differ in their mechanisms for generating localized auxin response maxima and highlight outstanding questions for future research. Purpose: To quantify the impact of a 14-day bovine colostrum (BC) supplementation on intestinal cell damage following exercise in a hot and humid environment.Methods: Ten male participants (20 ± 2 years, VO2max 55.80 ± 3.79 mL kg-1 min-1, 11.81 ± 2.71% body fat) ran for 46 ± 7.75 min at 95% of ventiliatory threshold in 40 °C and 50% RH following a 14-day double-blinded supplementation with either BC or placebo (Plac). Core temperature, skin temperature, heart rate, and rating of perceived exertion were recorded every 5 min during exercise. Blood was taken pre, post, 1 h, and 4 h post exercise. Intestinal cell damage was assessed via intestinal fatty acid binding protein (I-FABP).Results: I-FABP concentrations were similar between conditions at all time points [pre 989.39 ± 490.88 pg ml-1 (BC) 851.35 ± 450.71 pg ml-1 (Plac) post 1505.10 ± 788.63 pg ml-1 (BC) 1267.12 ± 521.51 pg ml-1 (Plac) 1-h, 1087.77 ± 397.06 pg ml-1 (BC) 997.25 ± 524.74 pg ml-1 (Plac) 4-h, 511.35 ± 243.10 pg ml-1 (BC) 501.46 ± 222.54 pg ml-1 (Plac)]. Aims: Antiarrhythmic medications for the treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF) have limited efficacy and rare but potentially life-threatening side effects. Ranolazine is an antianginal agent that may have antiarrhythmic activity in AF.Methods and Results: Using the Duke Enterprise Data Unified Content Explorer database, we analysed a cohort of AF patients on ranolazine. Patients served as their own historic control. Electrocardiograms (ECGs) were analysed before and after ranolazine initiation to determine the effect of ranolazine on dominant frequency (DF), f-wave amplitude, and organizational index (OI). We identified 15 patients with ECGs in AF before and after ranolazine. Ranolazine was associated with lower DF by an average of 10% (5.10 ± 0.74 vs. 5.79 ± 0.96 Hz, P = 0.04) but not with changes in OI (0.47 ± 0.11 vs. 0.50 ± 0.12, P = 0.71) or amplitude (0.47 ± 0.43 vs. 0.41 ± 0.40 mV, P = 0.82). Ranolazine was also associated with lower DF in patients (n = 10) not on concomitant antiarrhythmic therapy (5.25 ± 0.78 vs. 6.03 ± 0.79 Hz, P = 0.04).Conclusion: Ranolazine is associated with lower AF DF but no change in OI or fibrillatory wave amplitude.
