Polymeric networks, {[Co(dpyo)(ox)]}n (1), {[Co(dpyo)(fum)(H2O)2]}n (2) and {[Co(dpyo)(tp)(H2O)2]·[Co(H2O)6]·(tp)·(H2O)}n (3) [ox = oxalate dianion, fum = fumarate dianion, tp = terephthalate dianion and dpyo = 4,4′-dipyridyl N,N′-dioxide] have been synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. The structural determination reveals 1 and 2 are covalent bonded 2D networks of 4,4 topology and of these, complex 2 undergoes a H-bonding scheme resulting in a 3D supramolecular architecture. Complex 3 is a 1D coordination polymer built up by almost collinear hexacoordinated Co(ii), doubly bridged by a tp carboxylate group and a dpyo oxygen, which in combination with lattice [Co(H2O)6]2+, tp and water molecules shows an unprecedented 3D supramolecular network through H-bonding. In the polymer the dpyo shows novel µ-4,4 bridging mode towards the cobalt ion. Low temperature magnetic interaction reveals antiferromagnetic coupling in all of the complexes. A one-pot reaction of three different components [Co(ii), terephthalate dianion (tp) and 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpe)] in water–methanol (1 : 1) solvent leads to the self assembly of a 2D inclined interpenetrated network of formulation {[Co(bpe)(tp)(H2O)2]·2.5(H2O)}n (1), stabilized as {[Co(bpe)(tp)(H2O)2]·(glycol)}n (2) the reaction being carried out in (1 : 1) water–glycol medium. Two new cadmium (II) complexes [Cd(hmt)(dca)2]n (1) and [Cd3(hmt)2(SeCN)6(H2O)2]n (2) (hmt=hexamethylenetetramine, dca=dicyanamide) have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray single-crystal analysis. The complex 1 is a 2D rectangular grid of octahedral cadmium (II) with CdN6 chromophore where cadmium centers are doubly bridged by dicyanamide and hmt along a-axis, which are interlinked by dicyanamide running along c-axis. Whereas, complex 2 is a 1D chain of octahedral cadmium (II) with a three-leg ladder topology running along a-axis. The Cd(II) centers are doubly bridged through SeCN (infinite rail) along a-axis and singly bridged by hmt (two-step rung) along c-axis, having cadmium centers with CdSe2N3O and CdSe2N4 chromophores. The adjacent chains through H-bonding between coordinated water and hmt, and SeSe interaction are extended to 2D supramolecular architecture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
