The origin of mercury–manganese (HgMn) stars is still poorly understood and the statistical analysis of an extensive sample of well characterized objects would be very valuable. Nevertheless, the compilation of a clean and reliable list of all known HgMn stars, and complete characterization of those objects, is still a pending issue. We report the identification of 13 new HgMn stars from our own spectroscopic observations and from publicly available spectral libraries. In addition, we perform a thorough literature search to give a list of 46 confirmed HgMn stars (plus a further nine suspected HgMn stars) discovered over the last years or neglected by other compilations. When required, we performed specific observations to confirm doubtful cases. For the 13 newly identified HgMn stars we derived photospheric chemical abundances by spectral synthesis. Besides Hg and Mn, which are overabundant in the whole sample, P, Ga, and Xe are overabundant in the hottest stars of the sample, and Sr, Zr, and Pt among the coolest; Y is present in most stars of the sample. Three of these new HgMn stars are members of open clusters: HD 93549 in IC 2602, HD 96473 in NGC 3532, and HD 322659 in NGC 6281. Furthermore, our sample includes HD 145842, an object remarkable for its high rotation. In fact, its projected rotational velocity of v e sin  i = 124 km s−1 is the highest measured in any HgMn star and is more than 30 per cent above the theoretical limit predicted by the diffusion theory, which makes HD 145842 a challenging test case for the current models. A sudden increase in the rate at which material reaches the most internal part of an accretion disk, i.e., the boundary layer, can change its structure dramatically. We have witnessed such a change for the first time in the symbiotic recurrent nova T CrB. Our analysis of XMM-Newton, Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT)/X-Ray Telescope (XRT)/UltraViolet Optical Telescope (UVOT), and the American Association of Variable Stars Observers (AAVSO) V- and B-band data indicates that during an optical brightening event that started in early 2014 (ΔV ≈ 1.5) the following occurred: (i) the hard X-ray emission as seen with BAT almost vanished; (ii) the XRT X-ray flux decreased significantly, while the optical flux remained high; (iii) the UV flux increased by at least a factor of 40 over the quiescent value; and (iv) the X-ray spectrum became much softer and a bright, new blackbody-like component appeared. We suggest that the optical brightening event, which could be a similar event to that observed about 8 years before the most recent thermonuclear outburst in 1946, is due to a disk instability. We perform, for the first time, a detailed long-term activity study of the binary system ζ Ret. We use all available HARPS spectra obtained between the years 2003 and 2016. We build a time series of the Mount Wilson S index for both stars, then we analyse these series by using Lomb-Scargle periodograms. The components ζ¹ Ret and ζ² Ret that belong to this binary system are physically very similar to each other and also similar to our Sun, which makes it a remarkable system. We detect in the solar-analogue star ζ² Ret a long-term activity cycle with a period of ~10 yr, similar to the solar one (~11 yr). It is worthwhile to mention that this object satisfies previous criteria for a flat star and for a cycling star simultaneously. Another interesting feature of this binary system is a high ~0.220 dex difference between the average log(R'HK) activity levels of both stars. Our study clearly shows that ζ¹ Ret is significantly more active than ζ² Ret. In addition, ζ¹ Ret shows an erratic variability in its stellar activity. In this work, we explore different scenarios trying to explain this rare behaviour in a pair of coeval stars, which could help to explain the difference in this and other binary systems. From these results, we also warn that for the development of activity-age calibrations (which commonly use binary systems and/or stellar clusters as calibrators) the whole history of activity available for the stars involved should be taken into account. Asthma is associated with a loss of the structural integrity of airway epithelium and dysfunction of the physical barrier, which protects airways from external harmful factors. Granulocyte activation causes the formation of extracellular traps, releasing web-like structures of DNA and proteins, being important to kill pathogens extracellularly. We investigated whether eosinophils infiltrating airways in an experimental model of asthma would induce eosinophil extracellular traps (EETs) in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and lung tissue. We showed that an ovalbumin (OVA) asthma protocol presented a significant increase in eosinophil counts with increased extracellular DNA in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid as well as in lung tissue, confirming the presence of DNA traps colocalized with eosinophil peroxidase. EETs formation was reversed by DNase treatment. With these approaches, we demonstrated for the first time that OVA-challenged mice release extracellular DNA traps, which could aggravate pulmonary dysfunction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the detection from four symbiotic stars that were not known to be X-ray sources. These four object show a β-type X-ray spectrum, that is, their spectra can be modeled with an absorbed optically thin thermal emission with temperatures of a few million degrees. Photometric series obtained with the Optical Monitor on board XMM-Newton from V2416 Sgr and NSV 25735 support the proposed scenario where the X-ray emission is produced in a shock-heated region inside the symbiotic nebulae. Morbid obesity is considered a systemic inflammatory state. The objective of this project was to characterize the adipokine, cytokine and chemokine protein profile in serum from control, lean and obese mice. We hypothesized that chemokines and cytokines are altered by caloric restriction and diet-induced obesity as a function of changes in body composition. Six-week-old female C57BL/6N mice (n = 12 per group) were randomized to one of three diets: control (fed ad libitum); lean (30% calorie-restricted regimen relative to control) and diet-induced obese (DIO; high calorie diet, fed ad libitum). Body weight, body composition and food intake were monitored throughout the study. After 10 weeks on the diets, blood samples were collected, and adipokine/cytokine/chemokine serum profiles were measured by antibody array. Lean mice, relative to the control group, displayed increased concentrations of insulin-like growth factor (IGF) binding protein-3, -5 and -6 and adiponectin and decreased IGF-1. These mice also showed increased concentrations of interleukin (IL)-10, IL-12 p40/p70, eotaxin, monocyte chemoattractant protein-5 and SDF-1. In contrast, DIO mice displayed increased leptin, IL-6 and LPS-induced chemokine and decreased concentrations of all chemokines/cytokines measured relative to control mice. As such, these data indicate that DIO may lead to an inflammatory state characterized as a shift towards a T helper lymphocyte type 1–skewed responsiveness. The demonstration of differential adipokine, cytokine and chemokine protein profile in control, lean and DIO mice may have implications for immune responsiveness and risk of disease.
