After the Fukushima nuclear accident, the Japanese government implemented extensive decontamination work in 137Cs contaminated catchments for residents' health and local revitalization. Whether dramatic land use changes in the upstream decontaminated regions affected river suspended sediment (SS) and particulate 137Cs discharge downstream remain unknown because of the poor quantification on land cover changes and long-term river SS dynamics. We here introduce a 6-year concurrent database of the Niida River Basin, a decontaminated catchment, including the first available vector decontamination maps, satellite images in decontaminated regions with a spatial resolution of 10 m, and long-term river monitoring datasets spanning decontamination (2013–2016) and subsequent natural restoration stages (2017–2018). These datasets allow us, for the first time, to directly link the transport dynamics of river SS (particulate 137Cs) to land use changes caused by humans in real-time, which provide fundamental data for better understanding the river response of sediment to land use change. In this study, we applied a new methodology that utilized stable isotopic concentrations of water and SF6 concentrations of the air to investigate temporal variations in the spring water mean transit time (MTT) of a forested headwater catchment in Japan. We monitored the area from June 2010 to November 2021, including the forest thinning that occurred in October 2011. The SF6 concentrations were used to estimate the apparent age of the spring water, which was used to initiate a parameter calibration that determined the best possible MTT for each study period. The MTT was evaluated by estimating the d-excess variations of the spring water stable isotopes using the exponential piston flow model. The MTT ranged from 40 to 55 months and tended to increase soon after the forest was thinned. In contrast, the MTT was shorter by approximately 6 years after thinning occurred. The results indicate that the characteristics of the hydrological processes in the catchment underwent long-term changes after the forest was thinned. This study demonstrates that using combined tracer methods to investigate the hydrological response to forest management practices improved the results and can be used for better forest and subsurface water resource management. We examined changes in catchment‐scale annual and seasonal evapotranspiration after 50% strip thinning, using runoff data from headwater catchments. The short‐term water balance (STWB) method between periods from 8 to 100 days was applied to the treated (KT) and control (KC) catchments. The estimated evapotranspiration during the pre‐ and post‐thinning periods were 840 and 910 and 780 and 860 mm/year in the catchments KT and KC, respectively. According to a paired catchment analysis of estimated evapotranspiration, monthly evapotranspiration increased from 3 to 20 mm from June to December, while it decreased from 7 to 31 mm from January to May. The estimated annual and monthly evapotranspiration was compatible with the values monitored in the plot‐scale interception, canopy transpiration, and ground surface evapotranspiration. Our findings showed that the decreases in evapotranspiration due to 50% thinning were similar or different in different methods of measurement when compared with thinning in the other catchments around the world. The 2011 Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident released large amounts of radioactive materials into the environment. River systems play an important role in the terrestrial redistribution of FDNPP‐derived 137Cs in association with water and sediment movement. We examined the seasonal fluctuations in dissolved and particulate 137Cs activity concentrations and clarified the biological and physicochemical factors controlling 137Cs seasonality in the Abukuma River's middle course in the region affected by the FDNPP accident. The results showed seasonal fluctuations in the dissolved 137Cs activity concentration, with an increase in summer and a decrease in winter, although there was no clear seasonal change in the particulate 137Cs activity concentration. Water temperature and K+ concentration dominated the seasonality of the dissolved 137Cs activity concentration. The volumetric activity concentration of the organically bound 137Cs was found to be several orders of magnitude lower than that of the dissolved 137Cs. Therefore, we concluded that the 137Cs in organic matter is not a source of dissolved 137Cs in river water. The study also revealed the temperature dependence of Kd in riverine environments from a Van't Hoff equation. The standard reaction enthalpy of 137Cs in the Abukuma River was calculated to be approximately −19.3 kJ/mol. This was the first study to clearly reveal the mechanisms by which the dissolved 137Cs activity concentration and Kd are influenced by chemical and thermodynamic processes in the middle course of a large river, and it is expected to lead to an improved model of 137Cs dynamics in rivers. Artificial radionuclides including radiocesium (134 Cs and 137 Cs) and radiosilver (110mAg) were released into the environment following the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant accident in March 2011. These particle-bound substances deposited on soils of north-eastern Japan, located predominantly within a ∼3000 km2 radioactive fallout plume and drained by several coastal rivers to the Pacific Ocean. The current dataset (Evrard et al., 2021), which can be accessed at 10.1594/PANGAEA.928594, compiles gamma-emitting artificial radionuclide activities measured in 782 sediment samples collected from 27 to 71 locations across catchments draining ∼6450 km2 during 16 fieldwork campaigns. These campaigns were conducted in Japan between November 2011 and November 2020 in river catchments draining the main radioactive plume. This database may be useful to evaluate and anticipate the post-accidental redistribution of radionuclides in the environment and for the spatial validation of models simulating the transfer of radiocesium across continental landscapes. The synthesis and characterization of a novel DNA‐encoded library of macrocyclic peptide derivatives are described; the macrocycles are based on three sets of proteinogenic and non‐proteinogenic amino acid building blocks and featuring the use of copper(I)‐catalyzed alkyne‐azide cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction for ring closure. The library (termed YO‐DEL) which contains 1 254 838 compounds, was encoded with DNA in single‐stranded format and was screened against target proteins of interest using affinity capture procedures and photocrosslinking. Radiocesium released from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant (FDNPP) and deposited in the terrestrial environment has been transported to the sea through rivers. To study the long-term effect of riverine transport on the remediation process near the FDNPP, a monitoring project was initiated by the University of Tsukuba. It was commissioned by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in June 2011, and was taken over by the Fukushima Prefectural Centre for Environmental Creation from April 2015. The activity concentration and monthly flux of radiocesium in a suspended form were measured in the project. This provides valuable measurement data to evaluate the impact of the accidentally released radiocesium on residents and the marine environment. It can also be used as verification data in the development and testing of numerical models to predict future impacts. Long-term monitoring revealed that radiocesium (137Cs) deposition that fall from the canopy with litterfall was characterized by forest types, seasonal change, and canopy closure (CC). The sum of autumn and spring 137Cs deposition values divided by the sum of summer and winter tended to have higher values in the cedar forest. The angle of view α when the correlation between the CC size and litterfall amount is strongest, was 5° or less in the young cedar forest, but varied in the hardwood–pine mixed forest. Strontium-90 (90Sr) is the major long-lived radionuclide derived from the Chernobyl accident, and is still being detected in the heavily contaminated catchments of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. This study examines the long-term decrease in the dissolved-phase 90Sr concentration and the concentration–discharge (90Sr-Q) relationship in stream water since the accident. We show that the slow decline in 90Sr follows a double-exponential function, and that there is a clear relationship between 90Sr and Q. This study is the first to reveal that the log(90Sr)-log(Q) slope has been gradually decreasing since the accident. This trend persists after decay correction. Thus, it is not caused by the physical decay of 90Sr and environmental diffusion, but implies that the concentration formation processes in stream water have been changing over a long period. We propose a hydrochemical model to explain the time-dependency of the 90Sr-Q relationship. This paper presents a mathematical implementation of the new concept and describes the model assumptions. Our model accurately represents both the long-term 90Sr trend in stream water and the time-dependency of the 90Sr-Q relationship. Although several studies have assessed the effects of thinning on water quality, including nitrogen (N) exports, few have examined N-saturated plantations. This study assessed the short-term effect of thinning on N exports from a N-saturated plantation forest in northern Kyushu, western Japan, that was thinned (43% of basal area) during January–March 2012. Water levels at the gauging station were continually measured, and stream-water baseflow and stormflow samples were collected before (2011) and after (2013) forest thinning. Annual precipitation before (2469 mm) and after (2418 mm) forest thinning differed little, and annual water discharge after thinning (1641 mm) was similar to that before thinning (1609 mm). However, direct flow during stormflow periods was higher after thinning (260 mm) than before (153 mm). The concentrations of major ions in stream water did not differ before and after thinning. As a result, the high annual dissolved inorganic N (DIN) exports differed little before (35.8 kg N ha−1 a−1) and after (36.5 kg N ha−1 a−1) forest thinning. DIN exports during stormflow periods were slightly higher after (12.2 kg N ha−1 a−1) than before thinning (10.5 kg N ha−1 a−1) and were proportional to the increased direct flow after thinning (561 mm after vs. 470 mm before thinning). We concluded that thinning does not affect annual N exports from the N-saturated plantation forest, but it can increase the proportion of N exported during stormflow periods in proportion to increased water volume of direct flow after thinning. Purpose: Spectrocolourimetric measurements provide a relatively inexpensive, quick and non-destructive alternative to the analysis of geochemical and organic matter properties. When used in the analysis of sediments and their potential sources, these colour parameters may provide important information on the dominant processes (i.e. erosion) occurring in the Critical Zone. Here, they are used to investigate whether eroded sediment is derived from forest (i.e. natural), cultivated (i.e. anthropogenic) or subsoil sources in order to assess their potential to monitor the effect of decontamination in regions impacted by fallout from the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident. Materials and methods: Fifteen spectrocolourimetric properties (L*, a*, b*, C*, h, x, y, z, L, a, b, u*, v*, u', v') were measured in potential source (n = 37) and sediment (n = 400) samples collected during 13 campaigns from 2011 to 2017 after major flood events in two catchments (total surface area of 450 km2) draining the main FDNPP radioactive pollution plume. Potential sources included topsoil from forest and cultivated sources along with subsoil material originating from landslides, channel banks and the decontamination of cultivated areas. The optimum set of parameters used in the mixed linear model to calculate the sediment source contributions was obtained through the use of a range test, the Kruskal–Wallis H test and a linear discriminant analysis. Results and discussion: Nine selected colour parameters correctly classified 100% of the source samples (i.e. forest, subsoil and cultivated sources). The results illustrate that cultivated landscapes were the main source of sediment to these river systems (mean 56%, SD 34%) followed by subsoil (mean 26%, SD 16%) and forest sources (mean 21%, SD 24%). However, these contributions varied strongly over time, with a peak of subsoil contributions (mean 57%, SD 17%) in Fall 2015, coinciding with the occurrence of a typhoon after the remediation works. These results were consistent with monitoring studies conducted in the same area that showed the major impact of typhoon Etau in September 2015 on sediment and radiocaesium fluxes. Conclusions: These original results demonstrate that spectrocolourimetric measurements may contribute to the routine monitoring of the effectiveness of remediation works in this post-accidental context. Owing to the inexpensive, rapid and non-destructive analyses, spectrocolourimetric-based tracing methods have significant potential to provide information on the dominant erosion processes occurring in the Critical Zone. The Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant accident released limited amounts of actinides on soils of Japan. Characterisation of these particles is essential to determine the fate of actinides in the environment. The method presented in this paper, based on α-tracks detections, microscope observations and mass-spectrometry measurements, was designed to identify and characterize actinide-bearing particles in soil samples. The method was tested on a road dust sample collected in the main radioactive plume of the Fukushima region. Accordingly, α-tracks detection was demonstrated to provide a powerful technique to localise these particles and prepare their morphological, elemental and isotopic characterization. Understanding rainfall‐runoff processes is crucial for prevention and prediction of water‐related natural disasters. Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is a potential tracer, but few researches have applied it for rainfall‐runoff process studies. We observed multiple tracers including SF6 in spring water at 1‐ to 2‐hr intervals during rainstorm events to investigate the effectivity of SF6 tracer in rainfall–runoff studies through the clarification of rainfall–runoff process. The target spring is a perennial spring in a forested headwater catchment with an area of 0.045 km2 in Fukushima, Japan. The relationship between the SF6 concentration in spring water and the spring discharge volume was negative trend; the SF6 concentration in spring water becomes low as the spring discharge volume increases especially during rainstorms. The hydrograph separation using SF6 and chloride ion tracers was applied for determining the contribution of principal sources on rainfall–runoff water. It suggested more than 60% contribution of bedrock groundwater at the rainfall peak and high percentage contribution continued even in the hydrograph recession phase. Based on observed low SF6 concentration in groundwater after heavy rainfall, the replacement of groundwater near the spring with bedrock groundwater is indicated as a mechanism for water discharge with low SF6 concentration during rainfall events. Consequently, rainstorm events play an important role as triggers in discharging water stored in the deeper subsurface area. In addition, SF6 tracer is concluded as one of the strongest tracers for examining rainfall–runoff process studies. And, therefore, this study provided new insights into the dynamics of groundwater and its responses to rainfall in terms of SF6 concentration variance in water in headwater regions. Radiocarbon and radiocesium were measured on litter fractions (LF) collected on November 19th, 2011 at 40 km NW of the FDNPP. The 137Cs concentration is much higher in the lower fraction LFb at 226,650 ± 170 Bq kg−1 than in the upper fraction LFa at 7290 ± 40 Bq kg−1. From leaf-air 14C comparison, no excess 14C due to the FDNPP accident is detected in LFa deposited in 2010-2011. A significant 14C difference of 1.4% exists between pine needles and deciduous leaves in LFb, which may be due either to post-depositional processes or to a turnover time of 0.5-1 year of stored carbon for deciduous leaves growth. Soil erosion is a problem of global significance; yet obtaining data on rates of soil erosion is not straightforward. Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) offers the prospect of improvements in estimates of these rates through better understanding of the movement of individual soil particles. We report on two laboratory experiments to measure the travel distances of surrogate soil particles during erosion events. In the first experiment, we used RFID tags that need to be placed within a reader for identification. In the second, we used tags with a booster antenna that allowed remote detection. The recovery rate of particles in the first experiment was 81.7%. Most likely, lost particles were buried by other moving sediment. The distribution of travel distances is well fitted by a Burr 4-parameter distribution which lends support to its use for modelling travel distances of eroded particles. In the second experiment, the average distance from which particles could be detected was 62 mm and the average error in locating particles was 17.9 mm. We attribute much of this error to the assumptions that the detection field is a circle on the ground with the reader at its centre, and that the same detection range exists for all positions of the reader. RFID is shown to provide insights into the movement of individual soil particles, but improvements are needed in both particle detection range and modelling of soil particle movement before the full potential of RFID for measuring soil erosion can be realized. A highly valuable database of long-term hydrometeorological measurements is presented, containing in situ observations for a period of 37 years from a well-maintained grassland in the north-east of Japan. The observations include shortwave radiation, net radiation, air and dew point temperatures at three elevations, soil temperature at four depths, sensible heat flux, soil heat flux, wind speed, relative humidity, air pressure and precipitation. The heights of measurements are 1.6, 12.5 and 29.5 m above ground, with the soil-layer observations at depths of 0.02, 0.1, 0.5 and 1 m. This high-quality database includes four temporal resolutions of 10 s, 0.5 h, 1 h and 24 h, with the hourly data presented here. Monthly and annual statistics are presented at the database web page of the Center for Research in Isotopes and Environmental Dynamics and Prediction of the University of Tsukuba, http://doi.org/10.24575/0001.198108. We validated the data by comparing them with published data from the local meteorological agency in Tateno operated by the Japan Metrological Agency, including the average, maximum and minimum values of air temperature, shortwave radiation, wind speed, relative humidity and precipitation. We have generated a daily downward longwave radiation time series with a method developed by Kondo and Xu (1997) based on the observations from the database. This constructed time series agrees well with observations collected between 2002 and 2006, as evaluated based on the values of the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (=0.947) and percent bias (=1.486). For the whole database, annually averaged values show a positive trend in precipitation, air temperature, shortwave radiation, net radiation and sensible heat flux over the past 37 years, with a negative trend detected for wind speed, soil heat flux and soil temperature. Abstract: Spatial variability of throughfall (TF) isotopic composition, used as tracer input, influences isotope hydrological applications in forested watersheds. Notwithstanding, identification of the dominant canopy factors and processes that affect the patterns of TF isotopic variability remains ambiguous. Here, we examined the spatio‐temporal variability of TF isotopic composition in a Japanese cypress plantation, in which intensive strip thinning was performed and investigated whether canopy structure at a fine resolution of canopy effect analysis is related to TF isotopic composition and how this is affected by meteorological factors. Canopy openness, as an index of canopy structure, was calculated from hemispherical photographs at different zenith angles. TF samples were collected in a 10 × 10 m experimental plot in both pre‐thinning (from July to November 2010) and post‐thinning (from May 2012 to March 2013) periods. Our results show that thinning resulted in a smaller alteration of input δ18O of gross precipitation, whereas the changes in deuterium excess varied in both directions. Despite the temporal stability of spatial patterns in TF amount, the spatial variability of TF isotopic composition was not temporally stable in both pre‐ and post‐thinning periods. Additionally, after thinning, the isotopic composition of TF was best related to canopy openness calculated at the zenith angle of 7°, exhibiting three different relationships, that is, significantly negative, significantly positive, and nonsignificant. Changes in meteorological factors (wind speed, rainfall intensity, and temperature) were found to affect the relationships between TF δ18O and canopy openness. The observed shifts in the relationships reveal different dominant factors (partial evaporation and the selection), and canopy water flowpaths control such differences. This study provides useful insights into the spatial variability of TF isotopic composition and improves our understanding of the physical processes of interception through canopy passage. Purple soil is highly susceptible for overland flow and surface erosion, therefore understanding surface runoff and soil erosion processes in the purple soil region are important to mitigate flooding and erosion hazards. Slope angle is an important parameter that affects the magnitude of runoff and thus surface erosion in hilly landscapes or bare land area. However, the effect of slope on runoff generation remains unclear in many different soils including Chinese purple soil. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between different slope gradients and surface runoff for bare-fallow purple soil, using 5 m × 1.5 m experimental plots under natural rainfall conditions. Four experimental plots (10°, 16°, 20° and 26°) were established in the Yanting Agro-ecological Experimental Station of Chinese Academy of Science in central Sichuan Basin. The plot was equipped with water storage tank to monitor water level change. Field monitoring from July 1 to October 31, 2012 observed 42 rainfall events which produced surface runoff from the experimental plots. These water level changes were converted to runoff. The representative eight rainfall events were selected for further analysis, the relationship between slope and runoff coefficient were determined using ANOVA, F-test, and z-score analysis. The results indicated a strong correlation between rainfall and runoff in cumulative amount basis. The mean value of the measured runoff coefficient for four experimental plots was around 0.1. However, no statistically significant relationship was found between slope and runoff coefficient. We reviewed the relationship between slope and runoff in many previous studies and calculated z-score to compare with our experimental results. The results of z-score analysis indicated that both positive and negative effects of slope on runoff coefficient were obtained, however a moderate gradient (16°-20° in this study) could be a threshold of runoff generation for many different soils including the Chinese purple soil. Key message: Thinning resulted in evapotranspiration decrease and caused the relative contributions of each component to evapotranspiration to become very close. Abstract: To increase the understanding of forest management to control water cycles, we examined the effect of 50% strip thinning on evapotranspiration (ET) and its partitioning into canopy interception ( E ), tree transpiration ( E ), and forest floor evaporation ( E ) in a Japanese cypress ( Chamaecyparis obtusa Endl.) plantation. Intensive measurements were employed to monitor each component of ET during the pre- and post-thinning periods. The results showed the annual E was the dominant component of ET followed by E , whereas E was the smallest component in both periods. Thinning has significant impact on the process of ET partitioning. In such that it decreased from 42.3 to 33.7% in E /ET and from 45.0 to 34.9% in E /ET, and increased from 12.7 to 31.4% in E /ET on an annual scale. The relative contributions of each ET component to the whole ET became more or less the same after thinning. Additionally, the monthly E / P had relative stable values in both pre- and post-thinning periods, contributing significantly to the ET/ P during heavy rainfall conditions. After thinning, ET decreased by 21.4% from 629.3 to 494.8 mm during the growing season and by 20.4% from 979.8 to 780.1 mm at the annual scale, demonstrating that thinning results in an increase in water availability in the forested watershed. Headwaters contribute a substantial part of the flow in river networks. However, spatial variations of streamflow generation processes in steep headwaters have not been well studied. In this study, we examined the spatio-temporal variation of streamflow generation processes in a steep 2.98-ha headwater catchment. The time when baseflow of the upstream section exceeded that downstream was coincident with the time when the riparian groundwater switched from downwelling to upwelling. This suggests that upwelling of the riparian groundwater increased considerably in the upstream section during the wet period, producing a shift in the relative size of baseflow between the upstream and downstream sections. The timing of fluctuations among hillslope soil moisture, hillslope groundwater and streamflow reveals that the hillslope contributed to storm flow, but this contribution was limited to the wet period. There were two sources of ionizing irradiation after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki: (1) initial gamma-neutron irradiation at the moment of detonation and (2) residual radioactivity. Residual radioactivity consisted of two components: radioactive fallout containing fission products, including radioactive fissile materials from nuclear device, and neutron-activated radioisotopes from materials on the ground. The dosimetry systems DS86 and DS02 were mainly devoted to the assessment of initial radiation exposure to neutrons and gamma rays, while only brief considerations were given for the estimation of doses caused by residual radiation exposure. Currently, estimation of internal exposure of atomic bomb survivors due to dispersed radioactivity and neutron-activated radioisotopes from materials on the ground is a matter of some interest, in Japan. The main neutron-activated radionuclides in soil dust were Na, Al, Si, P, Cl, K, Ca, Sc, Mn, Fe, Co, and Cs. The radionuclide Mn ( T = 2.58 h) is known as one of the dominant beta- and gamma emitters during the first few hours after neutron irradiation of soil and other materials on ground, dispersed in the form of dust after a nuclear explosion in the atmosphere. To investigate the peculiarities of biological effects of internal exposure to Mn in comparison with external gamma irradiation, a dedicated experiment with Wistar rats exposed to neutron-activated Mn dioxide powder was performed recently by Shichijo and coworkers. The dosimetry required for this experiment is described here. Assessment of internal radiation doses was performed on the basis of measured Mn activity in the organs and tissues of the rats and of absorbed fractions of internal exposure to photons and electrons calculated with the MCNP-4C Monte Carlo using a mathematical rat phantom. The first results of this international multicenter study show that the internal irradiation due to incorporated Mn powder is highly inhomogeneous, and that the most irradiated organs of the experimental animals are: large intestine, small intestine, stomach, and lungs. Accumulated absorbed organ doses were 1.65, 1.33, 0.24, 0.10 Gy for large intestine, small intestine, stomach, and lungs, respectively. Other organs were irradiated at lower dose levels. Sediment connectivity characterizes the physical transfer of sediment through different geomorphic compartments in catchments due to sediment detachment, transport and deposition. Quantifying and modelling sediment connectivity is therefore a key prerequisite to improving our understanding of the dispersion of particle-borne contaminants, especially in catchments exposed to highly erosive climates. The objective of this study is to provide novel insights into typhoon impacts on sediment connectivity from hillslopes to rivers. The dispersion of particle-bound caesium-137 (137Cs) was investigated in two coastal catchments draining the main contamination plume from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. Five sampling campaigns were carried out from November 2011 to November 2015, after each typhoon season. The spatial and temporal evolution of 137Cs contamination was investigated through the calculation of 137Cs enrichment ratios in sediment relative to nearby soils. Rainfall erosivity (EI30) associated with the main typhoons that occurred prior to each sampling campaign were computed, mapped, and finally used to improve a topographic-based index of connectivity. From 2011 to 2015, mean contamination levels in Mano and Niida catchments decreased from 11.9 kBq kg−1 to 3.3 kBq kg−1 and from 34.1 kBq kg−1 to 8.0 kBq kg−1, respectively. Regional mean EI30 ranged from 262 MJ mm ha−1 h−1 for typhoon Jelawat (in 2012) to 1695 MJ mm ha−1 h−1 for typhoon Roke (in 2011). Typhoons Roke (2011) and Etau (2015) showed the highest connectivity from contaminated sources to the rivers, and induced a significant export of sediment to the ocean. In 2013 a slight increase in 137Cs levels in river sediments occurred, likely resulting from initial decontamination works and the occurrence of two consecutive typhoons. Importantly, this research provides new insights into the connectivity of the main sources of sediments contaminated with radiocaesium in Fukushima Prefecture and their temporal evolution, which will help with ongoing decontamination efforts. ABSTRACT In this research, the synthesis, biological evaluation, and conformational analysis of an apratoxin C oxazoline analog ( 3) have been demonstrated. The preparation of synthetic key intermediate 9 was achieved using an improved strategy that involves commercially available 3-methylglutaric anhydride ( 12), an enzymatic enantioselective alcoholysis, and a diastereoselective reduction. The Pro-Dtrina (3,7-dihydroxy-2,5,8-trimethylnonanoic acid) moiety 8 was successfully synthesized in a similar manner as our previously reported synthesis of apratoxin C ( 1). The cyclization precursor 5 was formed after the coupling of Pro-Dtrina 8 with a known tetrapeptide 7 to afford a linear peptide 6, the formation of an oxazoline, and the removal of the protecting groups. Finally, the macrolactamization of 5 with O-(7-aza-1 H-benzotriazol-1-yl)- N, N, N′, N′-tetramethyluronium hexafluorophosphate (HATU)/ N, N-diisopropylethylamine (DIEA) furnished an apratoxin C oxazoline analog ( 3), which exhibited a potent cytotoxicity against HeLa cells (IC50 value of 22 n M) that was comparable with the cytotoxicity of apratoxin C ( 1) (IC50 value of 4.2 n M). We examined changes in suspended-sediment yields (SSY) after a 50 % strip thinning in headwater streams draining a Japanese cedar ( Cryptomeria japonica) and cypress ( Chamaecyparis obtusa) plantation forest. We applied a paired-catchment analysis to treated ( K: 17.1 ha) and control ( K: 8.9 ha) catchments. Annual suspended-sediment yield (SSY) in the prethinning period in the K and K catchments was 110.0 and 142.1 kg/ha per year. For the postthinning period, SSY in the K catchment became 5055.6 kg/ha per year, whereas that in the K catchment increased 893.2 kg/ha per year. The paired-catchment analysis revealed that SSY in the K catchment increased 17.0-fold compared with the prethinning period. However, the dominant hysteresis pattern remained clockwise in both pre- and postthinning periods. Sequences of large storm events in the postthinning period elevated SSY in both catchments. The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant (FDNPP) accident in March 2011 resulted in the fallout of significant quantities of radiocesium over the Fukushima region. After reaching the soil surface, radiocesium is quickly bound to fine soil particles. Thereafter, rainfall and snowmelt run-off events transfer particle-bound radiocesium downstream. Characterizing the precipitation regime of the fallout-impacted region is thus important for understanding post-deposition radiocesium dynamics. Accordingly, 10 min (1995-2015) and daily precipitation data (1977-2015) from 42 meteorological stations within a 100 km radius of the FDNPP were analyzed. Monthly rainfall erosivity maps were developed to depict the spatial heterogeneity of rainfall erosivity for catchments entirely contained within this radius. The mean average precipitation in the region surrounding the FDNPP is 1420 mm yr-1 (SD 235) with a mean rainfall erosivity of 3696 MJmmha-1 h-1 yr-1 (SD 1327). Tropical cyclones contribute 22% of the precipitation (422mmyr-1) and 40% of the rainfall erosivity (1462 MJmmha-1 h-1 yr-1 (SD 637)). The majority of precipitation (60 %) and rainfall erosivity (82 %) occurs between June and October. At a regional scale, rainfall erosivity increases from the north to the south during July and August, the most erosive months. For the remainder of the year, this gradient occurs mostly from northwest to southeast. Relief features strongly influence the spatial distribution of rainfall erosivity at a smaller scale, with the coastal plains and coastal mountain range having greater rainfall erosivity than the inland Abukuma River valley. Understanding these patterns, particularly their spatial and temporal (both inter- and intraannual) variation, is important for contextualizing soil and particle-bound radiocesium transfers in the Fukushima region. This study revealed the influence of change in forest canopy structure by forest management practice for throughfall generation and canopy water interception process. Throughfall and stemflow were observed in a mature Japanese cypress ( Chamaecyparis obtusa) plantation before and after thinning. Decreased stem density (from 2400 to 1300 trees ha−1) and basal area (from 107.6 to 60.4 m2 ha−1) resulted in an increase in the throughfall fraction (from 58% to 79%) and decreases in the stemflow fraction (from 14% to 8.6%) and the canopy interception loss fraction (from 27% to 12%). Thinning also decreased spatial variability in throughfall and smoothed temporal persistence of throughfall among sampling points or rainfall events. These results were supported by the change in the throughfall balance between direct throughfall and released throughfall. The proportion of direct throughfall of incident rainfall changed from 0.16 to 0.42 owing to an increase in canopy gap. The distribution ratio of released throughfall from intercepted rainwater by canopy changed from 50% to 64% because of a decrease in foliage; this led to lower water storage in the canopy (from 1.83 to 0.82 mm), and thus less precipitation was needed to saturate the canopy. Consequently, the amount of throughfall increased and less precipitation was needed to stabilize the water flow path during the post-thinning period. Nutrient concentrations in stream water, rainfall, throughfall, stemflow, surface flow and ground water were compared before, during and after strip thinning (intensive 50%) in plantation forested watersheds in Tochigi, Japan. Influences were evaluated comparing four thinning-applied and two reference basins for 1 year before, 6 months during and 1 year after the thinning. Results show that this strip thinning significantly increased dissolved total phosphorus, total phosphorus and dissolved organic carbon (0.01, 0.04 and 0.53 mg l-1, respectively) during the thinning period and dissolved total nitrogen and total nitrogen (0.34 and 0.46 mg l-1, respectively) after the thinning in stream waters relative to the unthinned basins. The increased phosphorus during thinning indicated ground disturbances by the strip thinning, with a concomitant increase in dissolved organic carbon. Changes in biotic and abiotic conditions resulted in increased nitrogen after the thinning, particularly in the dissolved pool. Changes in hydrological processes due to thinning, for example, a change in flow distributions (less high nutrient stemflow and more low nutrient throughfall) and an increase in water discharge in stream water, possibly weakened the direct influences of thinning on nutrient concentrations. We evaluated the effects of 50% strip thinning on peak flow responses in 17-ha and 9-ha nested catchments. We observed 117 storm events from April 2010 to December 2013, including 32 events in the pre-thinning period, 15 events during the thinning operation, and 70 events in the post-thinning period. Paired-catchment analysis with multiple pairs of nested gauging stations revealed that changes in peak flow responses varied depending on the location of the nested observation stations. Increases in peak flow during the operation period were significant in gauging stations located at the outlet and the middle of a catchment. Increases in peak flow during the post-treatment period became significant in all nested catchments, but not in the catchment outlet. Rates of increase in peak flow ranged from 17.7% to 44.4%, which is within the range of previous studies. Different responses for changes in peak flow among nested pairs were associated with changes in internal hydrological flow pathways due to removal of timber and hydrological connectivity via overland flow generated by newly installed and reactivated skid trails. Our findings suggest that the effects of timber harvesting on peak flow are scale-dependent with respect to drainage areas, hydrological links, and management practices. Selection of gauging locations and process-based observations within catchments are essential for testing hypotheses related to the effects of timber harvesting with robust hydrological monitoring. We examined the effect of strip thinning on the spatio-temporal variability of throughfall (TF) in a mature Japanese cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) stand. Strip thinning, which removed 50% of stems, was performed in a catchment in October 2011. TF was examined by setting up 20 tipping-bucket rain gauges in an experimental plot. Canopy interception parameters were derived from high-temporal-resolution TF data. Observations were obtained during the growing season in the pre-thinning and postthinning periods. The results demonstrated that after thinning, the TF rate increased from 64.3 to 76.2%, and the mean coefficient of variation of the TF rate significantly decreased from 27.3 ± 9.7 to 22.5 ± 6.8%. The spatial TF patterns were largely related to the rainfall class. There was no significant difference in the TF rate for the rainfall amount >25mm between the periods. The temporal persistence of the normalized TF was slightly stable in the post-thinning period and was not significantly related to canopy cover or the distance to the nearest trunk of each rain gauge in either period. Additionally, thinning resulted in an increase in the proportion of direct TF (from 0.14 ± 0.07 to 0.33 ± 0.11) and a decrease in canopy water storage (from 2.4 ± 0.7 to 1.5 ± 0.5 mm). The quantification of the canopy interception parameters can aid in modelling the changes in interception loss and its processes induced by thinning. Recent studies have suggested the importance of the bedrock groundwater (BG) contribution in storm runoff in headwater catchments. However, few such studies have been conducted, and the study of different types of bedrock conditions is still ongoing. The role of BG in storm runoff is still poorly understood, particularly in headwater catchments underlain by relatively deep fractured bedrock. This study aims to clarify this role using hydrometric and hydrochemical observations of BG via boreholes and catchment discharge. The responses of the BG to rainfall are demonstrated to be fast and independent of the sediment cover. The BG exhibits different responses and flow paths that are largely controlled by the bedrock fracture system. The storm runoff in the studied catchment is characterized by rapid discharge response generally followed by a delayed discharge response. The peak of the delayed discharge is much faster than that observed in previous studies, and it is well correlated with the BG levels. A hydrograph separation was performed for two storm events using three end members: rainfall, shallow BG and deep BG. The results demonstrate that the delayed discharge is primarily composed of deep BG. Moreover, a significant contribution of shallow BG is observed during large precipitation events. Although we observed no physical evidence of direct contributions of BG in the catchment, the calculations presented in this study demonstrate that the BG controls the hydrological and hydrogeological response of the catchment to rainfall events. Core soils and falling litter samples were collected in a Japanese cypress forest (Chamaecyparis obtusa) to determine the litter-fed 210Pbex and organic carbon transfer from the forest canopy to soil and their subsequent distribution. Of the canopy residing 210Pbex pool, litterfall annually transports 53% to the forest floor while it adds 117 g m−2 per year of organic carbon to the forest soil, implying that litterfall dynamics can influence the distribution of 210Pbex and soil organic carbon (SOC). 210Pbex and SOC showed identical profile shapes and strong correlation in spatial as well as along the soil depth, indicating that both are affected by a similar process. Given the ubiquitous natural source of 210Pbex, it is plausible to infer that radiolead can be a possible tracer to study the SOC redistribution at regional and global scales. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT: In this paper, we examine the use of radio frequency identification (RFID) tags for studying soil erosion. Surrogate soil particles were created by coating RFID tags with silicone clay and bronze powder to give them an overall density similar to that of quartz particles. The particles were between 2.5 mm and 4.0 mm in diameter and had specific weights of 2.5 to 3.0. These tagged particles were deployed on two plots: first, in a proof‐of‐concept laboratory study and secondly in a field study, the latter involving repeated surveys after rainfall events. Seven surveys under natural rainfall over four months yielded recovery rates averaged 56%. RFIDs are shown to provide useful insights into the movement of individual soil particles during erosion processes. As RFID technology advances, further miniaturization is likely to occur enabling the movement of a greater range of soil particles to be studied, and we may anticipate improvements to the signal detection so that recovery does not rely wholly on visual identification. We collected fluvial suspended sediments in Fukushima after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident and analyzed the Cs concentration in bulk and size-fractioned samples to investigate the particle-size-dependent distribution of radiocesium. The Cs concentration in bulk suspended sediments decreased from August to December 2011, possibly reflecting a decrease of radiocesium concentration in its source materials. Smaller particles had higher radiocesium concentrations, reflecting larger specific surface areas. Silt- and sand-size fractions occupied more than 95 % of the total Cs in the suspended sediments. The contribution of clay-size fractions, which had the highest Cs concentration, was quite small because of their low frequency. A line of the data showed that the particle size distribution of radiocesium was essential to evaluate the migration and distribution of radiocesium in river systems where radiocesium is mainly present as particulate form after the FDNPP accident. ABSTRACT We investigated the contribution of three evapotranspiration (ET) components including canopy interception ( Ei), tree transpiration ( Et) and forest floor evaporation ( Ef) and identified the sources depth of evaporated water in a Japanese cypress stand. Monitoring primarily focused on the growing season of July-October 2011. In a 12 × 13 m plot with 28 trees with a DBH of 19.1 ± 3.9 cm, Ei was calculated as the difference between precipitation on an open field and precipitation under a canopy as the sum of throughfall and stemflow, and Et was measured using the Granier method. Ef was measured by weighing lysimeters. Total ET during the monitoring period was 446.3 mm, accounting for 47.5% of the total precipitation of 938.8 mm. Ei was the dominant evaporation flux and accounted for 53.6% of ET or 25.5% of rainfall, followed by Et with 33.7% of ET or 16.0% of rainfall. The average Et was 1.5 ± 0.6 mm d−1. It was well correlated with soil moisture at a depth of 5-15 cm, which reflected the forest properties, i.e. tree roots were exposed on the forest floor. Ef accounted for 12.7% of ET or 6.0% of rainfall with a daily mean of 0.55 ± 0.26 mm d−1, and was best correlated with soil moisture in the upper 5 cm of soil. These results can improve the understanding of water budget in forested watershed and also be used to build and validate hydrologic models for water resource managements. Interception loss ( E) in forests has been studied widely. However, E parameters and modeling as well as spatial patterns of throughfall ( TF) in abandoned Japanese cypress ( Chamaecyparis obtusa) plantations remain poorly documented. In this study, gross precipitation ( P), stemflow ( SF), and TF were monitored in an unmanaged 32-year-old Japanese cypress stand throughout the 2011 rainy season. Results indicate that P partitioning into TF, SF, and E were, respectively, 64.2 ± 3.6, 10.6 ± 0.6, and 25.2 ± 1.1 % of the 880.8 mm cumulative P from 29 rainfall events. Direct throughfall proportion ( p) and drainage from the canopy contributed about 14 ± 7 and 50 ± 21 % of the total TF for the events, respectively. The mean canopy storage capacity ( S) was 2.4 ± 0.7 mm. The coefficient of variability (CV) of TF rate decreased asymptotically with increasing P amount, ranging from 16 to 56 % with median 26 %. The CV of TF rate was not significantly correlated with canopy cover ( r = 0.152, P = 0.521, n = 20) and distance from the nearest trunk ( r = 0.196, P = 0.408, n = 20). Based on the revised Gash analytical model, the total simulated E was close to the observed, with a general underestimation magnitude of 5.7 %. The E components were quantified, and most of the interception loss (62.9 %) evaporated during rainfall, while 26.8 % evaporated after rainfall ceased. Climatic and forest structural parameters required by the model were identified and analyzed by sensitivity analysis, implying that the revised Gash analytical model is robust and reliable enough for abandoned Japanese cypress plantations in a maritime climate. This study aimed to quantify the flux of radiocesium in the Abukuma Basin (5,172 km2), the largest river system affected by fallout from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) event. In the period from 10 August 2011 to 11 May 2012 an estimated 84 to 92% of the total radiocesium transported in the basin's fluvial system was carried in particulate form. During this monitoring period Typhoon Roke (September 2011) was observed to induce a significant and temporally punctuated redistribution of radiocesium. The storm-mobilised radiocesium was an estimated 6.18 Terabecquerels corresponding to 61.4% of the total load delivered to the coastal zone during the observation period. The total flux of radiocesium into the Pacific Ocean estimated at the outlet station (basin area 5,172 km2) was 5.34 TBq for 137Cs, and 4.74 TBq for 134Cs, corresponding to 1.13% of the total estimated radiocesium fallout over the basin catchment (890 TBq). This was equivalent to the estimated amount of direct leakage from FDNPP to the ocean during June 2011 to September 2012 of 17 TBq and the Level 3 Scale Leakage on 21August 2013 (24 TBq). An understanding of the temporal variation in reservoir sedimentation and identification of the main sources of sediment are necessary for the maintenance of sustainable reservoirs. For this purpose, field measurements, sampling, and fingerprinting of reservoir sediment were undertaken from July 2005 to November 2007. Source fingerprinting of reservoir sediment was conducted using cesium-137 (137Cs). The relative contributions of gully bank and forest road, and forest floor material to reservoir sediment were calculated using a mixing model. Bank and forest road material, estimated to make up about 96% of the reservoir sediment, was the dominant source. Enormous reservoir sedimentation, which amounted to about 60% of the total reservoir sedimentation during the observation period, occurred during a heavy rainstorm with an 80-year recurrence time. To maintain the sustainability of the resevoir in this study, therefore, temporal and spatial preparation strategies for heavy rainstorms and bank and forest road erosion should be considered. However, spatial information on sediment sources from 137Cs fingerprinting is limited. We analyzed fresh and dead leaves collected in forests in Fukushima after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident, using autoradiography. Both fresh and dead leaves of Cryptomeria japonica were contaminated by radionuclides (Cs and Cs). Contamination of the fresh leaves was possibly attributed to interception of radionuclides by tree canopies, whereas the dead leaves indicated the direct deposition of radionuclides by fallout and/or washout of radionuclides intercepted by tree canopies. Translocation of radiocesium from a contaminated branch to new leaves growing after the FDNPP accident was not clearly observed, although transfer of radiocesium from leaf parts to male flowers occurred. Fallen leaves of Quercus serrata, which started growing after the FDNPP accident, did not show radioactivity, indicating that significant amounts of translocation from other parts to new leaves did not occur. Fallen leaves of Q. serrata collected from a litter showed hot spots originating from direct fallout. Needles of Pinus densiflora were also contaminated by fallout. Leaching with pure water removed soluble fractions of radiocesium and hot particles from the surface of the contaminated leaves, but significant amounts of radioactivity remained. This means that foliar absorption occurred in both fresh and dead leaves. Further leaching experiments using surfactant and acetone could not remove the remaining radiocesium from the leaves. The leaching experiments indicate that radiocesium in the contaminated leaves is strongly fixed in leaf tissues and is not readily released unless leaf tissues are decomposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To determine the effects of the characteristics of litter and surface soil on the infiltration capacity in bamboo groves, infiltration rates were measured on a plot-scale using an oscillating-nozzle rainfall simulator at seven Moso bamboo ( Phyllostachys pubescens) sites and one Madake ( P. bambusoides) site in Japan. The maximum final infiltration rate (FIR), which was defined in this study as the infiltration capacity, was calculated, and the correlation between FIR and earth surface properties was analyzed. The FIR ranged from 9 to 308 mm h, showing little correlation with litter as surface cover, and a weak correlation with bulk density (0.3-0.9 g cm) and organic matter content (10.4-45.9%). These results suggest that the bulk density and organic matter content of surface soil, rather than surface cover, can be the controlling factors of infiltration capacity in bamboo groves. The bulk density of surface soil correlated significantly with the soil organic matter content, represented by bamboo rhizomes, suggesting that the infiltration capacity can increase with the amount of root networks present, related to macropore formation. The stand density showed a weak positive correlation, although not significant, with the soil organic matter content and a positive correlation with FIR. The article presents a study on the estimation of the medium-term erosion rate of semi-arid grassland hillslope in Japan. The study intends to evaluates the extent to which a resurvey of the magnetite distribution on the hillslope can provide insight into the fine soil particles' movement in natural rainfall events. The article presents a study which examines the connections between watershed and flush parameters and determines whether flush exists at both the seasonal and event levels. The study quantifies three parameters that describe the characteristics of the flush and investigates flush characteristics of chemicals from four forested watersheds in Japan at both seasonal and event scales. Results show that the flush characteristics are complicated and depended on the elements of the hydrochemistry.

The article presents a study on the role of the bedrock groundwater and the subsurface flow in the rainfall-runoff process with the use of a tracer at Shiranui in Kumamoto, Japan. The study intends to determine the contribution of the bedrock groundwater to rainfall-runoff processes. The study reveals the interrelation of the groundwater table's location to the bedrock groundwater and soil water.

A low-cost and simple monitoring method for early warning of landslides is proposed. To detect abnormal deformation of a slope, this method employs a tilt sensor in place of an extensometer on the slope surface. In order to examine the relevance of measuring rotation angle on a slope surface by tilt sensor, model tests were conducted, and rotation on the slope surface was observed together with slide displacement along the surface. The rotation data responded 30 min before failure in a model test, which could be useful as a signal for early warning. However, the behavior of rotation before failure varies from case to case, and thus, criteria to issue warning should be defined more carefully. For a model slope made of uniform loose sand, measurement of slide displacement along the slope surface is sensitive to failure at the toe, while the measurement of rotation on the slope surface is useful to detect the development of progressive failure upward along the slope. Wireless sensor units with microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) tilt sensor and volumetric water content sensor were also examined on a real slope in Kobe City, and a long-term monitoring was attempted. A simple but possible way to define the criteria of judgment to issue warning can be proposed based on combination of data obtained by the tilt sensors and volumetric water content sensors.
