The use of DC microgrids (DC-µGs) offers a variety of environmental benefits; albeit, a successful implementation depends on the implementation of an Energy Management System (EMS). An EMS is broadly implemented with a hierarchical and centralized structure, where the communications layer presents as a key element of the system to achieve a successful operation. Additionally, the relatively low cost of wireless communication technologies and the advantages offered by remote monitoring have promoted the inclusion of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Wireless Sensor and Actuator Network (WSAN) technologies in the energy sector. In this article is presented the development of an IoT EMS based on a WSAN (IoT-EMS-WSAN) for the management of a DC-µG. The proposed EMS is composed of a WiFi-based WSAN that is interconnected to a DC-µG, a cloud server, and a User Web App. The proposed system was compared to a conventional EMS with a high latency wired communication layer. In comparison to the conventional EMS, the IoT-EMS-WSAN increased the updating time from 100 ms to 1200 ms; also, the bus of the DC-µG maintained its stability even though its variations increased; finally, the DC bus responded to an energy-outage scenario with a recovery time of 1 s instead of 150 ms, as seen with the conventional EMS. Despite the reduced latency, the developed IoT-EMS-WSAN was demonstrated to be a reliable tool for the management, monitoring, and remote controlling of a DC-µG. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Microgrids have increased in popularity thanks to both the integration of renewable energy resources and their energy distribution capability for remote locations. Moreover, the microgrids, mainly using multiple generators connected in parallel, acquire additional advantages by using both Hot-Swap and Current-Sharing techniques. This paper presents the development of a Hardware in the Loop platform to test Current-Sharing algorithms. It is reinforced that the use of a real-time simulation based on Hardware in the Loop is a viable and cost-effective alternative in the validation of controllers. The platform was developed in a graphical programming environment (LabVIEW 2015) and implemented with NI MyRIO 1900 (National Instruments Corp., Austin, TX, USA) development boards for easier reproducibility. The entire code project is openly available and provided in this paper. A system of photovoltaic energy generators was used to evaluate the performance of the HIL platform. As a result, the platform was able to reproduce a similar behavior to the photovoltaic generator, presenting average mean errors of 0.4 V and 0.2 A in its voltage and current, respectively. Additionally, the platform showed its capability to test Current-Sharing algorithms in the occurrence of Hot-Swap events. Today, maintaining an Internet connection is indispensable; as an example, we can refer to IoT applications that can be found in fields such as environmental monitoring, smart manufacturing, healthcare, smart buildings, smart homes, transportation, energy, and others. The critical elements in IoT applications are both the Wireless Sensor Nodes (WSn) and the Wireless Sensor Networks. It is essential to state that designing an application demands a particular design of a WSn, which represents an important time consumption during the process. In line with this observation, our work describes the development of a modular WSn (MWSn) built with digital processing, wireless communication, and power supply subsystems. Then, we reduce the WSn-implementing process into the design of its modular sensing subsystem. This would allow the development and launching processes of IoT applications across different fields to become faster and easier. Our proposal presents a versatile communication between the sensing modules and the MWSn using one- or two-wired communication protocols, such as I2C. The use of renewable energies contributes to the goal of mitigating climate change by 2030. One of the fastest-growing renewable energy sources in recent years is wind power. Large wind generation systems have drawbacks that can be minimized using small wind systems and DC microgrids (DC-µGs). A wind system requires a control system to function correctly in different regions of its operating range. However, real-time analysis of a physical wind system may not be feasible. An alternative to counteract this disadvantage is using real-time hardware in the loop (HIL) simulation. This article describes the implementation of an HIL platform in an NI myRIO 1900 to evaluate the performance of control algorithms in a small wind system (SWS) that serves as a distributed generator for a DC-µG. In the case of an SWS, its implementation implies nonlinear behaviors and, therefore, nonlinear equations, and this paper shows a way to do it by distributing the computational work, using a high-level description language, and achieving good accuracy and latency with a student-oriented development kit. The platform reproduces, with an integration time of 10 µs, the response of the SWS composed of a 3.5 kW turbine with a fixed blade pitch angle and no gear transmission, a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG), and a three-phase full-bridge AC/DC electronic power converter. The platform accuracy was validated by comparing its results against a software simulation. The compared variables were the PMSG currents in dq directions, the turbine's angular speed, and the DC bus's voltage. These comparisons showed mean absolute errors of 0.04 A, 1.9 A, 0.7 rad/s, and 9.5 V, respectively. The platform proved useful for validating the control algorithm, exhibiting the expected results in comparison with a lab-scale prototype using the same well-known control strategy. On Sept. 19th, 2021, a volcanic eruption began on the island of La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain). The pre-eruptive episode was characterized by seismicity and ground deformation that started only 9.5 days before the eruption. In this study, we applied seismic interferometry to the data recorded by six broadband seismic stations, allowing us to estimate velocity variations during the weeks preceding the eruption. About 9.5 days before the eruption, we observed a reduction in the seismic velocities is registered next to the eruptive centers that opened later. Furthermore, this zone overlaps with the epicenters of a cluster of volcano-tectonic earthquakes located at shallow depth (< 4 km) and detached from the main cluster of deeper seismicity. We interpret the decrease in seismic velocities and the occurrence of such a shallow earthquake cluster as the effect of hydrothermal fluid released by the ascending magma batch and reaching the surface faster than the magma itself. Coronary atherosclerosis is the most common form of cardiovascular diseases, which represent the leading global cause of mortality in the adult population. The amount of coronary artery calcium (CAC) is a robust predictor of this disease that can be measured using the medical workstations of computed tomography (CT) equipment or specialized tools included in commercial software for DICOM viewers, which is not available for all operating systems. This manuscript presents a web application that semiautomatically quantifies the amount of coronary artery calcium (CAC) on the basis of the coronary calcium score (CS) using the Agatston technique through digital image processing. To verify the correct functioning of this web application, 30 CTCSs were analyzed by a cardiologist and compared to those of commercial software (OsiriX DICOM Viewer).All the scans were correctly classified according to the cardiovascular event risk group, with an average error in the calculation of CS of 1.9% and a Pearson correlation coefficient r = 0.9997, with potential clinical application. This article presents the development of a low-cost control hardware in the loop platform for the validation and analysis of controllers used for the management of power sharing between the main grid and a DC microgrid. The platform is made up of two parts: a main grid interconnection system emulator (MGISE) and a controller under test (CUT). The MGISE operates on a 260 V DC bus and includes a 1000 W photovoltaic array, a DC variable load and a single H full bridge converter (HFBC). The CUT includes a phase locked loop and a main cascade control structure composed of two PI controllers. Both the MGISE and the CUT were embedded on an NI myRIO-1900 development board and programmed using LabVIEW virtual instrumentation software. These devices communicate with each other using analog signals representing the AC side current, the DC side voltage, and the HFBC control signal. The MGISE operates with an integration time of 6 µs and its performance is validated by comparing it with a simulation in PSIM. The integration time of the MGISE, the development boards used, as well as its programming environment, and the results obtained from the comparison with PSIM simulation, show that the proposed platform is useful for the validation of controllers for power sharing, with a simple implementation process compared to other hardware description methods and with a low-cost platform. Summary: Avian species often take advantage of human-made structures, such as perching on power poles, although this can lead to negative effects for both birds and infrastructure. It has been demonstrated that anchor-type pylons, with strain insulators, are amongst the most dangerous of these structures. Our goal was to develop a methodological approach to evaluate the ways in which raptors perch on the six most commonly used strain insulator configurations in Spain, and to build a risk index that can be used to prioritise them. To study the ways raptors perch, we worked with six wildlife rescue centres in central Spain for almost a year assessing these six strain insulator configurations in 83 perch trials with 176 raptors in ample flying pens. We analysed 475 complete survey days, with an approximate number of 258,960 analysed pictures, including 6,766 perchings on strain insulators. We assessed the influential factors for these 6,766 perchings and developed a novel approach to prioritise strain insulator configurations that can be used anywhere. Our results suggest that longer insulator strains (i.e. PECA-1000 and Caon-C3670) are the safest, according to our prioritization criteria, although these results require further assessment in the field. This paper presents the development of a virtual didactic tool for students of mechatronic engineering taking an intelligent system course. The objective of the tool is for students to learn the structures for fuzzy control systems. This tool makes it easier for students to understand the behavior of the membership functions of input and output variables, the evaluation of the set of fuzzy rules, and the method of defuzzification, giving the students the possibility of applying a fuzzy controller in industrial processes using a data acquisition board. The proposed tool was developed with the virtual instrumentation software LabVIEW. It has the advantage that students can manipulate the internal structure of the fuzzy logic control system in a unique window where students can analyze the behavior of internal signals by looking at the response graphs. The fuzzy controller can be easily translated to a real application by using LabVIEW compatible hardware. To have feedback from students on the use of the tool and to understand if this tool allows an improvement in their academic performance, a 2-hour workshop on the proposed application was given to a group of 93 students. At the end of the workshop, a knowledge assessment and a perception survey were applied to the participants. The academic performance achieved by students who were given the workshop using the proposed teaching tool was compared with the academic performance of students who witnessed the workshop using Matlab tools. The statistical analysis of the results obtained for the knowledge assessment shows that the students that had taken the workshop using the proposed teaching tool had better compression of the topic compared to the students that had taken the workshop using the Fuzzy Logic Toolbox provided by Matlab MathWorks. The students that had taken the workshop using the proposed teaching tool obtained a mean grade of 89.63/100, while students that had taken the workshop using Matlab's tools obtained a mean grade of 69.85/100. The hardware in the loop (HIL) technique allows you to reproduce the behavior of a dynamic system or part of it in real time. This quality makes HIL a useful tool in the controller validation process and is widely used in multiple areas including photovoltaic systems (PVSs). This study presents the development of an HIL system to emulate the behavior of a PVS that includes a photovoltaic panel (PVP) and a DC-DC boost converter connected in series. The emulator was embedded into an NI-myRIO development board that operates with an integration time of 10 µs and reproduces the behavior of the real system with a mean percent error of 2.0478%, compared to simulation results. The implemented emulator is proposed as a platform for the validation of control systems. With it, the experimental stage is carried out on two controllers connected to the PVS without having the real system and allowing to emulate different operating conditions. The first controller is based on the Hill Climbing algorithm for the maximum power point tracking (MPPT), the second is a proportional integral (PI) controller for voltage control. Both controllers generate settling times of less than 3 s; the MPPT controller generates variations in the output in steady state inherent to the algorithm used. For both cases, the comparison of the experimental results with those obtained through software simulation show that the platform fulfills its usefulness when evaluating control systems. Vanadium(IV/V) compounds have been studied as possible metallopharmaceutical drugs against diabetes mellitus. However, mechanisms of action and toxicological threshold have been tackled poorly so far. In this paper, our purposes were to evaluate the metabolic activity on dyslipidemia and dysglycemia, insulin signaling in liver and adipose tissue, and toxicology of the title compound. To do so, the previously reported bisammonium tetrakis 4-(N,N-dimethylamino)pyridinium decavanadate, the formula of which is [DMAPH]4(NH4)2[V10O28]·8H2O (where DMAPH is 4-dimethylaminopyridinium ion), was synthesized, and its dose-response curve on hyperglycemic rats was evaluated. A Long–Evans rat model showing dyslipidemia and dysglycemia with parameters that reproduce metabolic syndrome and severe insulin resistance was generated. Two different dosages, 5 µmol and 10 µmol twice a week of the title compound (equivalent to 2.43 mg·V/kg/day and 4.86 mg·V/kg/day, resp.), were administered intraperitoneal (i.p.) for two months. Then, an improvement on each of the following parameters was observed at a 5 µmol dose: weight reduction, abdominal perimeter, fatty index, body mass index, oral glucose tolerance test, lipid profile, and adipokine and insulin resistance indexes. Nevertheless, when the toxicological profile was evaluated at a 10 µmol dose, it did not show complete improvement, tested by the liver and adipose histology, as well as by insulin receptor phosphorylation and GLUT-4 expression. In conclusion, the title compound administration produces regulation on lipids and carbohydrates, regardless of dose, but the pharmacological and toxicological threshold for cell regulation are suggested to be up to 5 µmol (2.43 mg·V/kg/day) dose twice per week. Polyelectrolyte–surfactant mixtures and their interactions with fluid interfaces are an important research field due to their use in technological applications. Most of the existing knowledge on these systems is based on models in which the polyelectrolyte concentration is around 50 times lower than that used in commercial formulations. The present work marks a step to close the gap on the understanding of their behavior under more practically-relevant conditions. The adsorption of concentrated mixtures of poly(diallyldimethyl-ammonium) chloride and sodium N-lauroyl-N-methyltaurate at the water/vapor interface with a crude mixing protocol has been studied by different surface tension techniques, Brewster angle microscopy, neutron reflectometry, and several bulk characterization techniques. Kinetically-trapped aggregates formed during mixing influence the interfacial morphology of mixtures produced in the equilibrium one-phase region, yet fluctuations in the surface tension isotherm result depending on the tensiometric technique applied. At low bulk surfactant concentrations, the free surfactant concentration is very low, and the interfacial composition matches the trend of the bulk complexes, which is a behavior that has not been observed in studies on more dilute mixtures. Nevertheless, a transition to synergistic co-adsorption of complexes and free surfactant is observed at the higher bulk surfactant concentrations studied. This transition appears to be a special feature of these more concentrated mixtures, which deserves attention in future studies of systems with additional components. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In semi-arid regions, where hydrological resources are very vulnerable and where there are water shortages in many regions of the world, it is of great importance to assess the vulnerability that a system is facing or will face to the potential impacts of climatic changes and changes on the use of land. For that reason, this research focuses on evaluating the global vulnerability of a hydrological basin, taking into consideration these changes. Being different from the existing methodologies that assess the vulnerability, our methodology interconnects through a new interface a distributed hydrological model, global climate models, climate change scenarios, land use change scenarios and the largest number of system variables calculated with information from official sources. Another important point of our methodology is that it quantifies the global vulnerability of the system, taking into consideration hydrological, environmental, economic and social vulnerabilities. The results obtained show that the proposed methodology may provide a new approach to analyze vulnerability in semi-arid regions. Moreover, it made it possible to diagnose and establish that the greatest current and future vulnerabilities of the system are the result of activities in agricultural areas and urban centers.
