The energy balance constitutes a powerful management instrument for government agencies, as it offers an overview of the energy situation of the country (or region) and serves as a guide for energy policies and monitoring of these policies. Although Brazil has published the national energy balance for more than half a century, the national publication does not adequately address energy statistics at the level of the states. This occurs either due to the lack of specific data or the absence of total disaggregation. Accordingly, the elaboration and implementation of public policies for the energy sector in the Brazilian states lack consistent energy statistics. Therefore, this paper aims to present a model for the Brazilian states to elaborate the energy balance. The proposed model consists of applying internationally referenced methodologies to develop a user-friendly software, which includes automatic energy unit conversions, different chart styles, high-level data organization, and Sankey diagrams. As a result, the software can be adopted by local governments as a tool to maintain the state energy balance publication periodically, and hence obtain the detailed information necessary to manage and formulate energy policies. The advantage of the software is that it can be operated by non-experts and the energy flow as well as the entire report can be generated automatically. This paper describes the use of a Cascaded H-Bridge Multilevel Inverter to deal with the problem of partial shading in a photovoltaic system connected to the grid. Combined with the topology, it proposes the use of a virtual synchronous generator for power sharing between photovoltaic arrays and to ensure the connection to the power grid even in extreme shading situations with no power buffer. Demand management of Plug-in Hybrid Electrical Vehicles (PHEV) is an important requirement for the reduction of greenhouse gases and better use of the energy sources. Smart grids can control the power demand of PHEV, based on the knowledge of the demand curves. However, this information is not always known by PHEV owners or charging stations due to loss of data or due to the charging is done in cities with conventional power grids. These problems can increase the peak demand and makes dynamic pricing more difficult to implement. This paper proposes the use of fuzzy demands estimations to reduce the impact of these problems. This estimator is the basis of assistant software applications for PHEV users and charging stations to get more information for a best load management for PHEV. A new approach for modulation of an 11-level cascade multilevel inverter using selective harmonic elimination is presented in this paper. The dc sources feeding the multilevel inverter are considered to be varying in time, and the switching angles are adapted to the dc source variation. This method uses genetic algorithms to obtain switching angles offline for different dc source values. Then, artificial neural networks are used to determine the switching angles that correspond to the real-time values of the dc sources for each phase. This implies that each one of the dc sources of this topology can have different values at any time, but the output fundamental voltage will stay constant and the harmonic content will still meet the specifications. The modulating switching angles are updated at each cycle of the output fundamental voltage. This paper gives details on the method in addition to simulation and experimental results. In this paper, the use of differential evolution (DE), a global search technique inspired by evolutionary theory, to find the parameters that are required to achieve optimum dynamic response of parallel operation of inverters with no interconnection among the controllers is proposed. Basically, in order to reach such a goal, the system is modeled in a certain way that the slopes of P– \omega and Q–V curves are the parameters to be tuned. Such parameters, when properly tuned, result in system's eigenvalues located in positions that assure the system's stability and oscillation-free dynamic response with minimum settling time. This paper describes the modeling approach and provides an overview of the motivation for the optimization and a description of the DE technique. This paper describes new strategies to improve the transient response time of harmonic detection using adaptive filters applied to shunt active power filters. Two cases are presented and discussed, both using an adaptive notch filter, but one uses the least mean square algorithm to adjust the coefficients and the other uses the recursive least squares algorithm. The synchronization of the adaptive notch filter orthogonal input signals, which are generated by the Clarke transformation of the load currents, is achieved automatically without the need of a phase-locked loop. This procedure significantly reduces the real-time computation burden. Simulations using Matlab/Simulink are presented to clarify the algorithm, and practical implementation is performed using the DSP Texas Instruments TMS320F2812.
