Background: Since the beginning of the COVID‐19 pandemic, older Asians have experienced a rise in racism and discrimination based on their race and ethnicity. This study examines how anti‐Asian hate impacts older Asians' mental, social, and physical health. Methods: From March 18, 2022 to January 24, 2023, we conducted a cross‐sectional survey study of community‐dwelling Asian/Asian American adults aged ≥50 years from the San Francisco Bay Area. Measures included perceptions of anti‐Asian hate; direct encounters with hate incidents; indirect experiences with hate incidents (e.g. knowing a friend who was a victim); reports of anxiety, depression, loneliness, and changes in daily activities; ways to address these issues; and discussions with clinicians about hate incidents. Results: Of the 293 older Asians, 158 (54%) were Vietnamese and 97 (33%) Chinese. Eighty‐five (29%) participants were direct victims of anti‐Asian hate, 112 (38%) reported anxiety, 105 (36%) reported depression, 161 (55%) reported loneliness, and 142 (48%) reported decreased daily activities. Compared with those who were "not‐at‐all" to "moderately" worried about hate incidents, participants who were "very" to "extremely" worried experienced heightened anxiety (42% versus 16%), loneliness (30% versus 14%), and changes in daily activities (66% versus 31%), p < 0.01 for all. Most participants (72%) felt comfortable discussing hate incidents with clinicians; however, only 31 (11%) reported that a clinician had talked with them about these incidents. Conclusion: Both directly and indirectly, anti‐Asian hate negatively impacts older Asians' mental, social, and physical health. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Malaysia's vast migrant workforce, with a notably larger undocumented segment, grappled with dire conditions due to their predominantly low-skilled and semi-skilled employment. These challenges were compounded by cramped and unsanitary living conditions, exacerbated by limited access to healthcare services, especially for those lacking proper documentation. The Al-Jazeera's 101 East 'Locked Up in Malaysia's Lockdown' (2020, July 3) documentary starkly portrayed these hardships, illuminating the harsh realities faced by these workers. However, the documentary prompted a contentious response from the Malaysian government, accusing it oftarnishing the country's image. This paper delves into the responses to the documentary, particularly the counter-narratives presented by Malaysian netizens. Employing the critical discourse analysis (CDA) framework, this paper examines the discourse of defence (apologia) in the responses, focusing on the discursive strategies, namely nomination, predication, and argumentation. The findings reveal the strategic manoeuvres employed by Malaysian netizens as they sought to restore the nation's image and reputation, shedding light on how they repositioned themselves in relation to the 'Other'. Inadvertently, these led to a nuanced negotiation process that perpetuated and reinforced discrimination and racism, widening the gap between Malaysians (in-group) and the migrant community (out-group) during challenging times like the pandemic. This paper's significance lies in its dual contribution: understanding apologia strategies and their linguistic construction's role in perpetuating racism and discrimination while also laying the groundwork for more inclusive language use that fosters empathy, combats subtle bias and prejudice, and promotes unity within Malaysia's diverse socio-political landscape. Ethnic inequalities in health and wellbeing across the early and mid-lifecourse have been well-documented in the United Kingdom. What is less known is the prevalence and persistence of ethnic inequalities in health in later life. There is a large empirical gap focusing on older ethnic minority people in ethnicity and ageing research. In this paper, we take a novel approach to address data limitations by harmonising six nationally representative social survey datasets that span more than two decades. We investigate ethnic inequalities in health in later life, and we examine the effects of socio-economic position and racial discrimination in explaining health inequalities. The central finding is the persistence of stark and significant ethnic inequalities in limiting long-term illness and self-rated health between 1993 and 2017. These inequalities tend to be greater in older ages, and are partially explained by contemporaneous measures of socio-economic position, racism, and discrimination. Future data collection endeavours must better represent older ethnic minority populations and enable more detailed analyses of the accumulation of socio-economic disadvantage and exposure to racism over the lifecourse, and its effects on poorer health outcomes in later life. Twenty years ago, in an attempt to fill a gap in the literature on domestic violence among African Americans, the Institute on Domestic Violence in the African American Community (IDVAAC) launched its Community Insights Project in which focus groups were conducted in selected cities around the country. Over the course of the project, 335 African American participants in seven cities provided their views on the causes of domestic violence in the black community, solutions to the violence, and barriers to addressing the violence. These conversations with members of the faith community, the law enforcement community, community activists, human services workers, the LGBTQ community, and those working with children and youth provide a rare view of the black community's perspective on domestic violence. And while many of the responses are not exclusive to the black community, much of the discussion centered on uniquely African American issues such as structural inequalities, racial oppression, economic disenfranchisement of black men, and the ongoing impact of slavery. There was concern for the welfare of "the community" (vs. the individual), and for black men, even as they were being called out for their perpetration of intimate partner violence. Immigrants who believe they suffer from stigmatization and discrimination may still demonstrate positive attitudes toward government authorities. We explore this trust-discrimination paradox by examining perceptions about police and policing among Ethiopian Jews in Israel, an immigrant racial minority. Drawing on data collected from focus groups and survey results, we find that levels of trust in the police among Israelis of Ethiopian descent are equal to or higher than among veteran Jewish Israelis. Nevertheless, Ethiopian Israelis also report negative perceptions of the police that are rooted in strong feelings of stigmatization by these government agents. While trust in the police may reflect Ethiopian Jews' desire for integration, participation, and inclusion as legitimate and equal members of nation and state, we demonstrate that they use various de-stigmatization strategies whose aim is to downplay the importance and depth of their discrimination by the police. These strategies, we argue, allow Ethiopian Israelis to maintain positive attitudes toward the police. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
