Since the 1970's there has been a major increase in adventure sports participation but it seems that engagement in such sports comes with a stigma: adventure sports participants are often regarded as reckless 'daredevils'. We approach the questions about people's perception of risk and recklessness in adventure sports by combining empirical research with philosophical analysis. First, we provide empirical evidence that suggests that laypeople tend to assess the danger of adventure sports as greater than more mundane sports and judge adventure sports participants as more reckless than participants in non-adventure sports. We contextualise these findings within existing psychological risk perception paradigms and outline new philosophical explanations of the identified pattern in laypeople's risk perception. Previous researchers have indicated that a sense of community and social support are vital to referee retention; however, little is known about the connection between specific characteristics of sports officials' networks and retention. To better understand the sports officiating shortage, researchers explored the social support networks of 116 referees utilizing egocentric network analysis. The authors suggest that retention of sports officials depends on the interpersonal ties and network structures within which the referees are embedded. Specifically, resulting hierarchical models confirmed that retention relationships among officials are a multilevel phenomenon, and that outside communication and community were vital network characteristics that fostered retention relationships. Network size, tenure, and the officiating level also were significant when considering an official's network and its impact on retention. Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate and compare the clinico-radiographic outcomes between two techniques for acute Lisfranc fracture-dislocation with a large, displaced second metatarsal base plantar fracture: isolated Lisfranc screw fixation versus Lisfranc joint fixation with dorsoplantar miniscrew fixation of the second metatarsal base. Methods: We retrospectively compared the clinico-radiographic outcome between patients who underwent isolated Lisfranc screw fixation (Group 1, 26 patients) and those who underwent Lisfranc joint fixation with dorsoplantar miniscrew fixation of the second metatarsal base (Group 2, 23 patients). The main outcome measurements were the postoperative distance between the medial cuneiform and second metatarsal base on standing anteroposterior foot radiographs, known as the C1-M2 distance. Residual diastasis was defined as C1-M2 distance ≥ 2 mm on the affected side compared with that on the contralateral side. We also assessed the Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM)-activities of daily living (ADL) and sports subscale scores at three, six and ≥ 18 months postoperatively. Results: At the final follow-up, the mean C1-M2 distance on the affected side compared with that on the contralateral side was significantly greater in Group 1 than in Group 2 (3.9 versus 0.7 mm, P = 0.027). Furthermore, Group 1 showed a higher incidence of residual diastases at the final follow-up (69.2%) than the Group 2 (13.0%, P < 0.001). The FAAM-ADL scores at the final follow-up did not differ significantly between the groups (P = 0.518), but the FAAM Sports score was significantly higher in Group 2 than in Group 1 (P = 0.001). Conclusions: The postoperative C1-M2 distance was better maintained with Lisfranc joint fixation with dorsoplantar miniscrew fixation of the second metatarsal base than with isolated Lisfranc screw fixation. We recommend that surgeons exercise caution when dealing with a second metatarsal plantar fracture and consider performing secure fixation using the dorsoplantar miniscrew technique for improved clinical outcomes. The study introduces the twined-reinforcement chimp optimization (TRCO) framework, which combines two novel approaches to optimize the distribution of sensor nodes. The main goal is to reduce the number of sensor units required while maintaining high accuracy in determining the locations of ball collisions, with error margins significantly below the critical 3.5 mm cutoff. Through complex optimization procedures, the study aims to improve the efficiency and reliability of decision-making in table tennis refereeing by leveraging sensor technology. Design/methodology/approach: The study employs a design methodology focused on developing a sensor array system to enhance decision-making in table tennis refereeing. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to study the effects of the severity of preoperative bone marrow oedema (BME) on the postoperative short‐term outcomes following bone marrow stimulation (BMS) for osteochondral lesions of the talus (OLTs) and to propose a new metric that combines volume and signal density to evaluate BME. Methods: Sixty‐five patients with symptomatic OLTs (<100 mm2) and preoperative BME, who received BMS in our institution from April 2017 to July 2021 with follow‐ups of 3, 6 and 12 months, were analysed retrospectively. The area, volume and signal value of the BME were collected on preoperative magnetic resonance imaging. The enroled patients were divided into two groups according to the BME index (BMEI), which was defined as the product of oedema relative signal intensity and the relation of oedema volume to total talar volume. Visual analogue scale, American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS), Tegner, Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM)–activities of daily living (ADL) and Sports scores were assessed before surgery and at each follow‐up. The relationship between the scores and the volume, relative signal intensity and BMEI was explored. Results: Sixty‐five patients with preoperative BME were divided into the mild (n = 33) and severe (n = 32) groups based on the BMEI. A significant difference was found for each score with the general linear model for repeated measures through all follow‐up time points (p < 0.001). For the preoperative and 12‐month postoperative changes of the enroled patients, 53 patients (81.5%) exceeded the minimal clinically important difference of AOFAS and 26 (40.0%) exceeded that of FAAM‐sports in this study. The mild group showed significantly more improvement in AOFAS scores at 12 months (89.6 ± 7.0 vs. 86.2 ± 6.2) and FAAM‐ADL scores at 6 months (83.6 ± 7.6 vs. 79.7 ± 7.7) and 12 months (88.5 ± 8.5 vs. 84.4 ± 7.7) than the severe group (p < 0.05). No significant difference of all the scores between the groups was found at 3 months. No significant correlation was found in each group between BMEI and clinical outcomes. Conclusion: The severity of the preoperative BME negatively affected short‐term clinical outcomes following arthroscopic BMS for OLTs. Worse clinical outcomes were shown at postoperative 6 and 12 months in patients with a high preoperative BMEI, which could be a favourable parameter for assessing the severity of BME and assist in developing personalised rehabilitation plans and determining the approach and timing of surgery. Since sport officials constitute instrumental groups, their perceptions of, and interactions with, group members likely influence their performance, satisfaction, and retention. This warrants investigation into sport officiating groups. Rationale/Purpose: (1) Examine the relationship between sport officials' cohesion, satisfaction, and performance; (2) Investigate sport officials' perceptions of cohesion across sports; and (3) Explore sport officials' perceptions of group processes. Design/Methodology/Approach: Using a cross-sectional design, participants (N = 228) completed a survey measuring perceptions of cohesion, performance, and satisfaction. Findings: Responses demonstrated consistent positive relationships between cohesion, performance, and satisfaction. Path analysis found that task cohesion predicted performance and satisfaction. Participants rated task cohesion higher than social cohesion, with American football highest and Association football lowest. Practical implications: Officiating organizations can use these results to reconsider assigning practices and develop strategies that improve cohesion, leading to increased performance and retention. Research contribution: Results highlight the need for sustained research to further understand how group processes influence sport officials and their performances. In recent years there has been substantial growth of women playing in and competing at the top levels of traditionally male-dominated sports, including Australian Football. By comparison, the number of women officials have not increased at the same rate, raising multiple questions about retention, participation and sustainability. This paper reports the experiences of girls and women Australian Football officials. 27 umpires who identified as girls, women or as non-binary participated in interviews or focus groups which were then analysed thematically. Findings indicate that regardless of their location, level of experience, or seniority, girls and women faced overt and covert exclusion and discrimination in umpiring due to their gender. These included microaggressions delivered through the framing of their appointments to games, change room practices and gendered and sexual harassment. Discursive constructions often positioned the participants as 'different' and 'lesser' in their abilities and belonging, impacting their desire to continue umpiring. We argue that the current cultural context of umpiring is at best marginalising to girls and women, and at worst hostile and dangerous. To improve these environments, commitment to and strategy for reform is needed at a broad, institutional level, and at a local, interactional level, including specific education and inclusion initiatives, targeted development pathways, investment in infrastructure and policy, and ongoing analysis of change. This study aimed to examine how soccer referees make decisions about issuing yellow cards for fouls. The research involved 60 male participants, divided into expert (n=30) and novice (n=30) groups based on their experience and qualifications as referees. They took part in a 2x2x2 mixed-design experiment. The study looked at Decision-Making Style (DMS: Analytical Decision-Making [ADM] vs. Intuitive Decision-Making [IDM]), Video Type (yellow card foul vs. nonyellow card foul), and Referee Level (expert vs. novice) as independent variables. The dependent variables were accuracy rate (ACC), discrimination index (D), self-confidence index (C), and overconfidence index (OC). The findings showed that Analytical Decision-Making (ADM) led to higher accuracy compared to Intuitive Decision-Making (IDM). Expert referees demonstrated better accuracy than novice referees. There was also an interaction between Decision-Making Style and Referee Level, showing differences in the effectiveness of ADM and IDM between expert and novice referees. Additionally, the study revealed that both expert and novice referees showed overconfidence, with experts demonstrating significantly higher overconfidence, particularly during IDM. In conclusion, the research highlighted the complexity of referees' decisionmaking in high-pressure situations and emphasized the potential benefits of employing Analytical Decision-Making strategies. The study contributed to understanding cognitive biases in sports officiating and suggested the need for targeted training programs to help referees improve their performance and reduce overconfidence in challenging situations. This study documents how sports officials negotiate aggression from cisgender male athletes as a key feature of their occupational role. Through an ethnographic case study of a collegiate intramural athletic organization, sports officials (N = 24) were observed while officiating and interviewed about their experiences with athlete aggression. Utilizing a phronetic iterative approach and positioning theory as an analytic framework, three organizational storylines were identified that contribute to the implicit, often gendered, rules related to the experience and expression of aggression in this context. Findings also indicated that male and female officials differed in their positioning strategies in response to athlete aggression, through (a) confidence positioning, (b) stoic positioning, (c) expert positioning, and (d) coercive positioning. This paper investigates the presence of compensating tendencies in the awarding of free shots in hurling. Probit models are estimated to examine whether free shots awarded are determined by the score margin, net free count, and net card count at the time. In addition, the effect of large attendances and home games on these compensating tendencies is captured using interaction effects. Clear evidence of compensating tendency effects if the team is behind on the score margin or behind on the free count are found. When the game is played in front of large attendances, compensating tendencies based on the score margin are amplified. In contrast, there is no evidence of a home team bias in compensating tendencies based on the subset of games played at nonneutral venues. Although efforts should be made to minimize the compensating tendencies identified, administrators should tread carefully because the direction of the compensating tendencies are procompetition. Simple Summary: This study explored how dressage judges focus their attention on different parts of horse-rider performances during competitions. By using eye tracking technology, we analyzed where judges look and how long they focus on specific areas. We included twenty judges with varying levels of experience and recorded their eye movements as they assessed Grand Prix dressage tests on video. We found that all judges mostly looked at the front of the horse compared to the rider or other parts of the horse. However, advanced level judges paid more attention to the horse's feet, while judges engaged at the lower level of the sport looked more at the rider. These patterns suggest that judges concentrate on a few highly relevant areas, depending on the underlying criteria for evaluating performances. Understanding judges' visual patterns and how they interpret what they see can help improve judging, making it more accurate and transparent, ensuring more consistent evaluations in competition and improving equine welfare. This study investigated the visual search behavior of equestrian dressage judges at different expertise levels during the assessment of Grand Prix horse-rider combinations. Twenty judges (11 foundational level, 9 advanced level) participated in the study, with their eye movements recorded using Tobii Fusion Eyetracker as they evaluated video recordings of dressage tests. Fixation metrics, namely Total Duration of Fixation (TDF), Average Duration of Fixation (ADF), and Total Number of Fixations (TNF), were analyzed across four Areas of Interest (AOIs): front, back, rider, and horse's feet. Statistical analysis utilized linear mixed-effects models. Results demonstrated that judges consistently focused more on the front of the horse, with additional differences in fixation duration and frequency based on judge experience and specific movements. Advanced judges focused more on the horses' feet, suggesting they draw meaning from specific areas indicative of performance quality. Conversely, foundational level judges focused more on the rider, reflecting different evaluative priorities at lower levels of the sport. These findings suggest that judges focus on a limited number of highly relevant areas, differing across movements and expertise levels. The study underscores the necessity of understanding both gaze behavior and subsequent interpretations of visual information to increase judging transparency, fairness, and equine welfare. The decision-making of soccer referees is one of the typical forms influenced by factors such as environmental pressure and individual emotions. While previous studies have explored how common factors like personal anxiety and on-field pressure affect the decisions of soccer referees, the mechanisms by which anxiety influences decision-making under pressure remain unclear. This study developed a penalty task based on real soccer match scenarios and recruited 76 experienced soccer referees. These referees were divided into two groups, high anxiety and low anxiety, based on their anxiety levels, to perform decisionmaking tasks under different pressure environments simulated to mimic real matches. Additionally, this research employed Event-Related Potential (ERP) technology to compare the brain signals of soccer referees with different levels of anxiety when facing foul play under various pressure environments. It was found that referees with high levels of anxiety displayed larger P300 and N400 amplitudes in a low-pressure environment (p = 0.0059, t = 2.9437). However, no significant differences in P300 and N400 amplitudes were observed between referees with high and low levels of anxiety under high-pressure conditions (p = 0.1890, t = 1.3411). This study not only reveals the complex mechanisms of anxiety in the decision-making process of referees but also emphasizes the importance of understanding and managing the psychological state of referees in competitive sports to improve the quality of their decisions. Background: Hip arthroscopy (HA) has been proven to be an effective treatment for femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) in both competitive athletes (CA) and non-CA at short-term follow-up. However, there is a paucity of literature investigating midterm outcomes comparing athletes with Controls. Hypothesis: Athletes would have significant improvements at 5 years, with favorable outcomes compared with their control counterparts, and high return-to-sport (RTS) rate. Study Design: Propensity-matched retrospective comparative cohort study. Level of Evidence: Level 3. Methods: CAs who underwent primary HA for FAIS from January 1, 2012 to April 30, 2017 were identified and propensity matched on a 1:4 basis to Controls by age, sex, and body mass index (BMI). Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) were collected preoperatively and at 5 years. Minimal clinically important differences (MCID) and patient acceptable symptom states (PASS) rates were calculated using previously published thresholds. Rate and duration of RTS were collected retrospectively. Results: A total of 57 high-level CA (33 female, 24 male; age, 21.7 ± 4.2 years; BMI, 23.1 ± 2.8 kg/m2) were propensity matched to 228 Controls (132 female, 96 male; P > 0.99; age, 23.3 ± 5.8 years; P = 0.02; BMI, 23.8 ± 4.3 kg/m2, P = 0.24). Significant differences were observed in preoperative Hip Outcome Score Sports Specific and Activities of Daily Living (HOS-ADL) subscales (CA, 74.9 ± 13.7 vs Controls, 66.4 ± 18.4; P = 0.01) and modified Harris Hip Score (mHHS) (CA, 64.7 ± 12.9 vs Controls, 59.7 ± 14.3; P = 0.04). Both groups demonstrated significant postoperative improvements in all outcome scores measured (P ≤ 0.01). At 5 years postoperatively, there were significant differences between groups in Visual Analog Scale (VAS) Pain (CA, 17.3 ± 17.6 vs Controls, 24.7 ± 25.9; P = 0.02). There were no significant differences in achieving MCID or PASS. Athletes RTS at a median of 25.2 weeks (Q1 22.4-Q3 30.7) with an overall RTS rate of 90%. Similar rates of revision were seen between CA patients (n = 3; 5.3%) and Control patients (n = 9; 3.9%) (P = 0.66). Conclusion: CAs demonstrated significant and durable improvements in PROs as well as high MCID and PASS achievement rates after primary HA, which were comparable with those of Controls. Clinicians should be aware that CA patients demonstrate higher preoperative mHHS and HOS-ADL scores than Controls and achieve lower average self-reported pain at 5 years postoperatively. In addition, CA patients demonstrate high rates of RTS at a median of 25 weeks postoperatively. Clinical Relevance: This study provides insight into CA versus Control PROs and rates of achieving MCID and PASS at a midterm follow-up of 5 years. Athletes may be especially primed to become referees; yet, we do not know what former athletes think about this career choice. To address the worldwide referee shortage, it is important to better understand athletes' perceptions of refereeing. From a Career Contingency Model framework, it is evident athletes' perception would influence their decision to consider refereeing. This study's aim was to examine athletes' perceptions of the refereeing environment (RQ1) and identify referee recruitment barriers (RQ2). Utilizing a descriptive phenomenological approach, 23 current and former athletes took part in semistructured interviews based on their lived experience as an athlete. The participants identified the officiating environment as a high-stress environment with financial instability, while time and lack of knowledge and support were identified as recruitment barriers. The results contributed to the burgeoning line of research attempting to address the global referee shortage and provide both theoretical and practical implications for sport managers. Effective methods to improve decision-making in sports officiating, particularly with the current and ongoing issues with in-person training, means new remote training methods must be developed. Traditional training of officials occurs primarily as "in-person coaching" at matches, with supporting training manuals and 2D broadcast analysis. However, live matches present difficulties in implementation, while manuals and 2D broadcast videos may not sufficiently ensure learning transfers to real situations. Due to its ease of use, first-person perspective, and ability to analyze live and post-event remotely, 360° virtual reality video technology (360° VR) offers an alternative technological solution for developing decision-making accuracy for sports officials across multiple sports. This study sought to assess the ecological validity (EV) of using 360° VR technology to enable remote teaching of decision-making. Decision-making quality and accuracy in softball umpires were similar when using 360° VR and the traditional method (2D broadcast footage), but 360° VR received significantly higher EV values than the 2D broadcast videos. In addition, interviewed participants expressed excitement about using 360° VR to augment traditional umpiring manuals and rulebooks. The results show that 360° VR has the potential to enhance or replace traditional remote learning methods for decision-making in softball umpires and allow softball learning to reach a much wider umpire audience. The work devoted to human posture recognition during rapid movements and complex non-standard poses due to the large number of limbs involved in the movement. Rhythmic gymnastics was chosen as the subject area and, accordingly, the specifics of the judge's assessment of the athlete's performance. Many synchronized videos with fast movements and sequences of complex poses from different angles allows us to form a data set necessary for further research and implementation of the results obtained both in socially important industries and in the market of commercial services using artificial intelligence technologies. A computer system has been developed that can be used to increase the objectivity of sports judging at rhythmic gymnastics competitions, as well as to become an alternative to the traditional judging system in the case of competitions held in a remote format. By scaling up the task, the system can also be used to diagnose problems with the human nervous system and musculoskeletal system. As a result of the research, a dataset depicting the performance of sports elements was collected and structured. The peculiarities of the mediapipe and ViTPose models were identified and the best solution for preprocessing the prepared set was chosen. The main result of this work is a built and trained model for classifying sports elements, which classifies 7 elements with an accuracy of 0.9048. The accuracy indicates that the model performs at a high level, correctly classifying sports elements in most cases. This level of accuracy indicates that the model has been effectively trained to classify these specific elements. In the future, to be able to fully evaluate the performances of female rhythmic gymnasts, it is necessary to add tracking of the object with which the athlete performs, to create a method for tracking interaction with it. Squash is a sport where referee decisions are essential to the game. However, these decisions are very subjective in nature. Disputes, both from the players and the audience, regularly occur because the referee made a controversial call. In this study, we propose automating the referee decision process through machine learning. We trained neural networks to predict such decisions using data from 400 referee decisions acquired through extensive video footage reviewing and labeling. Six positional values were extracted, including the attacking player's position, the retreating player's position, the ball's position in the frame, the ball's projected first bounce, the ball's projected second bounce, and the attacking player's racket head position. We calculated nine additional distance values, such as the distance between players and the distance from the attacking player's racket head to the ball's path. Models were trained on Wolfram Mathematica and Python using these values. The best Wolfram Mathematica model and the best Python model achieved accuracies of 86% ± 3.03% and 85.2% ± 5.1%, respectively. These accuracies surpass 85%, demonstrating near-human performance. Our model has great potential for improvement as it is currently trained with limited, unbalanced data (400 decisions) and lacks crucial data points such as time and speed. The performance of our model is almost surely going to improve significantly with a larger training dataset. Unlike human referees, machine learning models follow a consistent standard, have unlimited attention spans, and make decisions instantly. If the accuracy is improved in the future, the model can potentially serve as an extra refereeing official for both professional and amateur squash matches. Despite evidence that elite-level cricket umpires are highly accurate in making leg-before-wicket (LBW) judgements, there is limited understanding as to how they make these judgements. In this study, we explored the explicit LBW decision-making expertise of elite-level cricket umpires (N = 10) via 10 individual semi-structured interviews. Using thematic analysis, we aimed to identify the sources of information that umpires incorporate into their decision-making process. Results indicated that umpires engage in intentional pre-delivery information-gathering to guide their expectations, and to set context-specific parameters as to what would constitute an LBW dismissal. Not only do umpires use information about the ball trajectory, but they also use additional information about the condition of the pitch, the action-capabilities and susceptibilities of players, and the unique requirements of different match formats. Umpires reported employing a gaze-anchor strategy when gathering information for each delivery and described the process of this information as initially intuitive, before engaging in deeper post-hoc reasoning. In this paper, we present a Lacanian perspective on football, while notably fathoming its normative dimension. Starting with a defining imperative, the prohibition against 'handling' or touching the ball with your hands, diverging football historically from rugby, we will subsequently focus our attention on the role of the foot, the eye (notably the eyes of the audience) and the 'object a' (in the context of gender). Against this backdrop, we will address pressing issues such as the troubled position of the referee (as an 'impossible profession'), the commercialisation of football, and the rising tides of violence, match—fixing and other instances of systemic deviance. As we will argue, football exemplifies modern sport as an arena defined by prohibitions and desire, by inclusion and exclusion, by purity and abuse, culminating in recent challenges involved in gender trouble. Symbolical practices, like modern football, are based on in- and exclusion. Sports refereeing has traditionally relied on human judgment, which can be prone to errors. However, the development of automatic referee systems has the potential to address this issue, improve training, and promote sports in the future. In this study, we present a novel and portable referee framework system specifically designed for volleyball games, which utilizes piezoelectric sensors to detect pressure and simultaneously harvest energy for powering the system. The system consists of two parts: a wearable glove and a device mounted on the volleyball. The glove part has five sensors fixed on the fingertips and the volleyball has eight sensors evenly distributed on its surface. The collected contact data from the sensors is wirelessly transmitted to a personal computer. Our experimental results demonstrate that the framework can accurately capture a three-second contact and detect foul actions in a volleyball game. Evidential reasoning (ER) under uncertainty is essential for various applications such as classification, prediction, and clustering. The effective realization of ER is still an open issue. Reliability plays a decisive role in the final performance as a major parameter of ER, reflecting the evidence's inner information. This paper proposed ER based on the information volume of the mass function (ER-IVMF), which considers both weight and reliability. Numerical examples were designed to illustrate the effectiveness of the ER-IVMF. Additionally, a sports scoring system experiment was conducted to validate the superiority of the ER-IVMF. Considering the reliability based on high-order evidence information, the output of the proposed method was more accurate than that of the other methods. This study examines whether there is a quantifiable change in the magnitude of home advantage (HA) when football matches are contested behind closed doors. The study incorporates the highest divisions of football leagues in England, Germany, Italy, Portugal, and Spain. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, 506 fixtures were played without crowds across these leagues during the 2019/20 season. We conducted inter-season analysis comparing HA between the 2019/20 season and the 2018/19 season (when crowds were present). We also conducted intra-season analysis comparing HA between fixtures played with and without crowds during the 2019/20 season. The Italian Serie A and the German Bundesliga were the only leagues where any evidence of a significant decline in inter-season HA (between 2018/19 and 2019/2020) or intra-season HA (between fixtures with and without crowds in 2019/20) was found. The authors investigated the impact of video speed on judging the duration of sport performance. In three experiments, they investigated whether the speed of video presentation (slow motion vs. real time) has an influence on the accuracy of time estimation of sporting activities (n1 = 103; n2 = 100; n3 = 106). In all three studies, the time estimation was more accurate in real time than in slow motion, in which time was overestimated. In two studies, the authors initially investigated whether actions in slow motion are perceived to last longer because the distance they cycled or ran is perceived to be longer (n4 = 92; n5 = 106). The results support the hypothesis that the duration of sporting activities is estimated more accurately when they are presented in real time than in slow motion. In recent years, the importance of cognitive intervention promoting physical health and well-being among college students has gained significant attention. The cognitive dimension is pivotal in determining individuals' behaviors and decisions, especially in domains where personal choices significantly impact well-being. However, with increasing awareness concerning the advantages of exercise and healthy behaviors, many college students require assistance prioritizing their physical health because of various problems, including current academic schedules and the stress of postgraduate college admissions. To address these issues, this study presented data mining algorithms to assess the efficacy of cognitive treatments in improving college students' health and fitness through sports activity. It smoothly integrates sports education into a larger social development framework, emphasizing the vital significance of holistic well-being and the numerous benefits of rigorous fitness and physical training regimens. It analyzes the efficacy of college students' sports learning using data mining to clarify the Apriori and decision tree algorithms. It addresses students' sports perceptions, cognitive interventions for sports health and health standards in college physical education. This paper evaluates the intervention's success based on sports value cognition, sports need cognition and sports attitude recognition to improve student performance. The analysis of undergraduate students' post-intervention scores revealed a considerable rise in these areas, with the experimental group scoring 14.2 and the control group scoring 11.53. The specific scores for sports value cognition were 17.86 and 15.7, while those for sports attitudes and cognition were 11.28 and 9.56, respectively. The impact of the cognitive intervention is further analyzed concerning body shape and physical fitness. The results reveal that a higher proportion of students in the intervention group engaged in physical exercise than the control group, especially with more than three weekly exercise sessions. The intervention and control groups' participation rates were 20.2% and 6.75%, respectively. Notably, the intervention group demonstrated a higher proportion (5.78%) of students engaging in five or more physical exercises per week than the control group (1.95%). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sports referees are not always as unbiased or impartial as they ideally should be. Studies have shown, for example, that in their decisions, referees seem to be biased against people of different race, gender or height or biased in favour of the home team. There is no doubt that such partiality work against official ideals of fairness and non-discrimination in sport. The problem with this is that being affected by implicit biases potentially causes the referees to make unfair decisions, with the result that some people are penalised disproportionately within the realm of sport. In this paper, we argue that sports organisations ought to require referees to undergo implicit bias testing as part of their mandatory training, in order to gain knowledge about biases and to take the proper counter-measures to combat such biases. It is common to hear the claim that referees in sporting events are doing their jobs well so long as they are, quite simply, being fair to both sides in a competitive event. It will be the purpose of this article to analyze this claim. I will argue that being fair to both sides is, in fact, a necessary condition for good sport officiating, but it is not sufficient. My interlocutors in the article will be J.S. Russell and Mitchell Berman, whose magisterial articles on the philosophy of sport officiating and on the relationship between sport and law rightly emphasize that rules are not all that a referee has to work with while officiating a sporting event. The point to my article is to highlight a feature of rules that is compatible with Russell's and Berman's view that rules are not sufficient: that rules are nonetheless necessary. My thesis is novel because counterintuitive: a referee who is fair to both sides can nonetheless advantage one side over another in a sporting event if the rules (whether de jure or de facto) are not followed. The goal of the present research was to investigate whether claims (postperformance nonverbal emotional expressions) influence people in evaluating performance during surf contests. To test this research question, the authors sampled videos from professional surf contests and asked laypeople (Experiment 1; N = 110) and surf judges (Experiment 2; N = 41) to evaluate the performance in 2 online experiments. A subset of the surfing performances showed surfers displaying postperformance emotional expressions (claims), while another subset showed the same performances without the claims (nonverbal emotional expressions). Both experiments provided evidence that both laypeople and surf judges were biased by claims in judging surfing performances, with claims better than the performances without claims. The findings are in line with social-cognitive models emphasizing the socioconsequences of emotion expressions. Many new video-based technologies (e.g., eye trackers, point-of-view camera) have been integrated into sport referee performance monitoring and training. Mobile 360° video (an omnidirectional video-capture tool affixed to the referee during their performance using a chest harness) provides moving images recorded from a first-person perspective. This case study explored rugby union referees' and referee coaches' engagement with mobile 360° video during a viewing of another referee's performance. Using an other-confrontation interview approach, referees' and referee coaches' cognitive activity (interests, concerns, noticing, and knowledge) while viewing mobile 360° video was elicited and studied. Participants experienced heightened immersion in the situation, as well as enhanced discovery and noticing behavior, and they constructed different types of embodied and corporeal knowledge. Using a rugby union setting, this occurred through enhanced perceptual involvement provided by mobile 360° video for reflection on referee positioning and movement, contextual inference about decisions, and sensitivity to player cues and interactions. This study provides preliminary evidence for the utility and acceptability of mobile 360° video as a pedagogical innovation in referee training to enhance referees' decision making, game management, and reflexivity. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare clinical and radiological outcomes between isolated medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction (MPFLR) and MPFLR combined with derotational distal femoral osteotomy (DDFO) for patellar dislocation with increased femoral anteversion (FA). Methods: Between 2014 and 2019, 36 patients who underwent isolated MPFLR and 31 patients who underwent MPFLR combined with DDFO were retrospectively included. Clinical outcomes included physical examinations, functional outcomes (Kujala, Lysholm, International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC), and Banff Patella Instability Instrument (BPII) scores), activity level (Tegner activity score and return to sports), complications, and patellar re-dislocation rate. Radiological outcomes included patella tilt angle, patellar congruence angle, and patella–trochlear groove distance. Results: All clinical outcomes improved significantly in both groups, but the DDFO group had significantly better postoperative scores than the MPFLR group (Kujala: 85.1 ± 7.7 vs. 80.5 ± 8.4, P = 0.023; Lysholm: 86.8 ± 8.2 vs. 81.9 ± 9.1, P = 0.026; IKDC: 86.2 ± 10.0 vs. 81.7 ± 8.1, P = 0.045; and BPII: 68.0 ± 12.5 vs. 62.3 ± 10.0, P = 0.039). Both groups achieved successful return to sports (90.3% vs. 91.7%). No re-dislocation or major complications occurred. Radiological outcomes improved significantly in both groups, but the DDFO group had better outcomes (P < 0.05). The tibial tubercle–trochlear groove distance was only improved after DDFO from 17.0 ± 2.3 mm to 15.1 ± 2.0 mm (P = 0.001). Conclusion: Both isolated MPFLR and MPFLR combined with DDFO yielded satisfactory clinical and radiological outcomes in the treatment of patellar dislocation with increased FA. Human segmentation and tracking (HS-T) in the video often utilize person detection results. In addition, 3D human pose estimation (3D-HPE) and human activity recognition (HAR) often use human segmentation results to reduce data storage and computational time. With recent advantages of deep learning, especially using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), there are excellent results in these relevant tasks. Consequently, they can be applied to building many practical applications such as sports analysis, sports scoring, health protection, teaching, and preserving traditional martial arts. In this paper, we performed a survey of relevant studies, methods, datasets, and results for HS-T, 3D-HPE, and HAR. We also deeply analyze the results of detecting persons as it affects the results of human segmentation and human tracking. The survey is performed in great detail up to source code paths. The MADS (Martial Arts, Dancing, and Sports) dataset comprises fast and complex activities. It has been published for the task of estimating human pose. However, before determining the human pose, the person needs to be detected as a segment in the video, especially the 3D human pose annotation data is different from the point cloud data generated from RGB-D images. Therefore, we have also prepared 2D human pose annotation data on the 28k images for creating 3D human pose annotation and action labeling data. Moreover, we also evaluated the MADS dataset with many recently published deep learning methods for human segmentation (Mask R-CNN, PointRend, TridentNet, TensorMask, and CenterMask) and tracking, 3D-HPE (RepNet, MediaPipe Pose, and Lifting from the Deep, V2V-PoseNet), and HAR (ST-GCN, DD-net, and PA-GesGCN) in the video. The erasure of marginalized people, especially LGBTQ+ people, is commonplace in sport. As sport has become more commercialized, even at grassroots and youth levels), one group that has become even further marginalized and dehumanized are sports officials. Understanding the intersection of marginalized identities is important; as such, this study examined how homophobia and transphobia interplay with the sports officiating profession. Semistructured interviews with 16 self-identified LGBTQ+ referees revealed a series of organizational and social factors that led officials to either pass as non-LGBTQ+ or to come out as LGBTQ+, leading to the development of the LGBTQ+ Referee Identity Management Process Model. We investigated the effect of anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (rDLPFC) on the sensitive decision making of female team sports referees. Twenty-four female referees voluntarily participated in this randomized, double-blind, crossover, and sham-controlled study. In three different sessions, participants received either anodal (a-tDCS; anode (+) over F4, cathode (−) over the supraorbital region (SO)), cathodal (c-tDCS; −F4/+SO), or sham tDCS (sh-tDCS) in a randomized and counterbalanced order. a-tDCS and c-tDCS were applied with 2 mA for 20 min. In sh-tDCS, the current was turned off after 30 s. Before and after tDCS, participants performed the computerized Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) and Go/No Go impulsivity (IMP) tests. Only a-tDCS improved IGT and IMP scores from pre to post. The delta (Δ = post–pre) analysis showed a significantly higher ΔIGT in a-tDCS compared to c-tDCS (p = 0.02). The ΔIMP was also significantly higher in a-tDCS compared to sh-tDCS (p = 0.01). Finally, the reaction time decreased significantly more in a-tDCS (p = 0.02) and sh-tDCS (p = 0.03) than in c-tDCS. The results suggest that the a-tDCS improved factors related to sensitive decision making in female team sports referees. a-tDCS might be used as an ergogenic aid to enhance decision performance in female team sports referees. Introduction: A pedagogical innovation backed by an online device using 360° video had been devised to train young team sports referees (handball, soccer, rugby) to be more reflective. The objective of this exploratory research was to investigate the ways young student referees use 360° videos in allo-confrontation when carrying out some exercises involving open questions about their viewing experience. Methods: Student referees' answers were recorded. A grounded analysis of these answers enabled us not only to identify their main focuses when viewing the 360° videos but also to distinguish different cognitive stances. Results: The grounded analysis revealed (1) idiographic differences between student referees in the video sequencing, although the participants seemed to share the same reference points, (2) two kinds of focus, one on the unfolding of the game and another one on the referee peer's activity, and (3) different perspectives according to which student referees use video and to initiate a reflection on a differentiation of several types of immersion: empathetic, simulation, exploratory. Discussion: This study highlighted the conditions under which referees' reflectivity was fostered by the use of 360° video during allo-confrontation. In recent years, research has shown a positive correlation between sport-specific cognitive abilities and the performance of referees in different sports. However, it is still uncertain how much of the expertise exhibited by referees results from acquired sport-specific skills versus pre-existing general abilities. This study aimed to determine if the relationship between sport-specific abilities and expertise previously observed also applies to general visual abilities. In cooperation with the German basketball federation, basketball referees were recruited for the study, resulting in the final sample of 86 participants who were grouped as elite basketball referees, amateur referees, or novices. These participants completed five tests within the Vienna Test System: time and spatial anticipation, perceptual speed, visual orientation, and spatial working memory. Five separate ANOVAs reported a significant effect of the factor expertise on the performance in spatial anticipation. Post hoc tests revealed that elite referees performed significantly better than amateur referees and novices in spatial anticipation. The superior performance of elite referees in spatial anticipation tasks suggests that their expertise may not be solely limited to acquired skills in basketball but may also be partly attributed to better general spatial anticipatory abilities that might reflect a required skill for refereeing. In chapter 1, Harper provides an excellent overview of the sport philosophy literature related to "theories of sport." Harper ultimately resists a full commitment to either pragmatic ethics or virtue jurisprudence - instead emphasizing their selective contributions to the development of his novel sport realism theory of sport. Continuing his development of sport realism, Harper sets out in chapter 4 to define cheating as "an instance of rule-breaking [that] warrants a restorative sanction given by sport officials, and we would expect such sanction to be given if the action is caught.". Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the outcomes of conservative treatment for recurrent shoulder dislocation without subjective apprehension, despite the presence of a Bankart lesion or glenoid defect. Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed for 92 patients with recurrent shoulder dislocation treated with conservative treatment due to negative apprehension between 2009 and 2018. The failure of the conservative treatment was defined as a dislocation or subluxation episode or subjective feeling of instability based on a positive apprehension. The Kaplan–Meier method was used to estimate failure rates over time, and a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was constructed to determine a cut-off value for a glenoid defect. The clinical outcomes were compared between patients who completed conservative treatment without recurrence of instability (Group A) and those who failed and subsequently underwent surgical treatment (Group B) using shoulder functional scores and sports/recreation activity level. Results: This retrospective study included 61 of 92 eligible patients with recurrent shoulder dislocation. Among the 61 patients, conservative treatment failed in 46 (75.4%) over the 2-year study period. The cut-off value for a glenoid defect was 14.4%. The association between glenoid defect size (≥ 14.4% or as a continuous variable) and survival was statistically significant (p = 0.039 and p < 0.001, respectively). The mean glenoid defect size in Group B increased from 14.6 ± 3.0% to 17.3 ± 3.1% (p < 0.001), and clinical outcomes for Group A were inferior to those for Group B at the 24-month follow-up. Conclusions: Conservative treatment for recurrent shoulder dislocation in patients without subjective apprehension showed a high failure rate during the study period, especially if the glenoid defect was ≥ 14.4% in size. Despite clinical improvement in patients who completed conservative treatment without recurrence, functional outcome scores and sport/recreation activity levels were better in the patients who underwent arthroscopic Bankart repair. Therefore, for recurrent anterior shoulder instability, even without subjective apprehension, surgical treatment is warranted over conservative treatment. Level of evidence: Level IV.
