This study evaluated the impact of using calcium hydroxide or antioxidant agents on the bond strength of adhesive restorations to bleached dentin. A total of 40 teeth were prepared and allocated into eight groups, first divided according to the surface treatment after bleaching (no treatment or application of calcium hydroxide, 10% sodium ascorbate, or 5% sodium thiosulfate for 10 minutes) and then according to the time of final restoration after treatment (immediate or after 7 days). Sodium perborate with 20% hydrogen peroxide was applied for 3 weeks using a developed artificial pulp chamber, with peroxide replacements provided every week. Composite resin restoration was performed, followed by a microtensile test. Then, specimens were analyzed using a stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Data were submitted to Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests (P < .05). The bond strength of nonbleached teeth was similar to the groups restored after 7 days of bleaching (P < .05). The lowest bond strength values were seen in groups restored immediately after bleaching (P < .05). In all groups, there was a considerable predominance of adhesive fractures. Delaying the final restoration of teeth submitted to nonvital bleaching by 7 days increased the bond strength. The immediate restoration of bleached teeth after using 10% sodium ascorbate or 5% sodium thiosulfate for 10 minutes showed unsatisfactory results. Irrespective of the dentin protocol applied before adhesion, bond strength values will be satisfactory when delaying the final restoration and unsatisfactory when immediately performing the final restoration. Sustainability and environmental impact assessments of trade and investment agreements need to address biodiversity more effectively. To showcase this, we examined a report, commissioned by Switzerland, on potential environmental impacts and risks of the trade between Switzerland and the Mercosur under the EFTA–Mercosur Free Trade Agreement. Our analysis focuses on chemical pollution, regulatory impact, duty-free precious minerals, deforestation, and greenhouse gas emission to develop a roadmap for (re-)interpreting (muted) risks on biodiversity in light of the Global Biodiversity Framework. Our analytical approach on normative and substantive effectiveness of impact assessments encourages broader responses to impacts of economic policies on biodiversity and ecosystems. Purpose: This cross-sectional study investigated the association between anthropometric measurements and age-related blood pressure (BP) in a large cohort of Portuguese children and adolescents. Methods: We included 2972 individuals aged 2–18 years, drawn from previous study databases. Participants were categorized into four groups: preschoolers (2–5 years), primary schoolers (6–10 years), middle schoolers (11–14 years) and high schoolers (15–18 years). Elevated BP was defined as systolic and/or diastolic BP > 90th percentile for age and sex. Age-adjusted partial correlations with BP were computed for body mass, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and waist-to-height ratio. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to determine the predictive capacity each of these measurements for identifying individuals with elevated BP. Results: Elevated BP was observed in 32% of the sample. Partial correlations ranged from small to moderate (0.2–0.5, p < 0.05). As indicated by ROC curves, BMI emerged as the most accurate predictor of elevated BP (AUC = 0.584–0.724, p < 0.05). BMI cut-off values were established to balance sensitivity (SE) and specificity (SP): Preschoolers—girls: BMI > 16.42 kg/m2 (SE = 71.28%, SP = 46.52%); boys: BMI > 18.25 kg/m2 (SE = 30.2%, SP = 85.30%); Primary-schoolers—girls: BMI > 20.67 kg/m2 (SE = 39.02%, SP = 91.45%); boys: BMI > 17.61 kg/m2 (SE = 67.50%, SP = 71.43%); Middle-schoolers—girls: BMI > 24.01 kg/m2 (SE = 36.26%, SP = 88.30); boys: BMI > 20.04 kg/m2 (SE = 65.17%, SP = 64.62%); High-schoolers—girls: BMI > 22.77 kg/m2 (SE = 56.52%, SP = 69.62); boys: BMI > 21.09 kg/m2 (SE = 71.20%, SP = 63.20%). There are no assessment and screening tools for Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) validated for the Portuguese population. The Social Communication Questionnaire (SCQ) is an useful screening tool of ASD diagnosis. The main objectives of our study were to produce a Portuguese version of the SCQ (SCQ-PF), study its internal consistency, sensitivity and specificity in order to evaluate its validity as a screening instrument for ASD. We also wanted to study the impact of intellectual disability and verbal impairment and other mental disorders on SCQ-PF psychometric properties. The study included 211 children and adolescents, aged 4–17, divided in three groups: ASD Group (n = 96), Other Mental Disorders Group (OMD) (n = 63) and No Mental Disorders (NMD) Group (n = 52). Parents or other primary caregiver provided information on the SCQ items. The SCQ-PF score was significantly higher in the ASD group than in the other groups (p < 0.001). As to internal consistency, Cronbach's alpha was 87%. ASD subjects were distinguished from subjects without ASD (OMD and NMD Groups) and the area under the curve (AUC) was 0.897 (95% Confidence Interval: 0.852–0.943), for a cutoff of 14, which yielded the highest AUC, with values of sensitivity and specificity 0.76 and 0.93, respectively. These findings show that SCQ- PF with a cutoff of 14 is an acceptable and useful screening tool for ASD in the Portuguese population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of death and disability worldwide. The decision-making process in the management of severe TBI must be based on the best available evidence to minimize the occurrence of secondary brain injuries. However, healthcare approaches to managing TBI patients exhibit considerable variation. Methods: Over an 18-month period, a multidisciplinary panel consisting of medical doctors, physiotherapists, nutritional therapists, and nurses performed a comprehensive review on various subtopics concerning TBI. The panel identified primary questions to be addressed using the Population, Intervention, Control, and Outcome (PICO) format and applied the Evidence to Decision (EtD) framework criteria for evaluating interventions. Subsequently, the panel formulated recommendations for the management of severe TBI in children. Results: Fourteen evidence-based recommendations have been devised for the management of severe TBI in children, covering nine topics, including imaging studies, neuromonitoring, prophylactic anticonvulsant use, hyperosmolar therapy, sedation and analgesia, mechanical ventilation strategies, nutritional therapy, blood transfusion, and decompressive craniectomy. For each topic, the panel provided clinical recommendations and identified research priorities. Background and objective: One of the functions attributed to the auditory efferent system is related to the processing of acoustic stimuli in noise backgrounds. However, clinical implications and the neurophysiological mechanisms of this system are not yet understood, especially on higher regions of the central nervous system. Only a few researchers studied the effects of noise on cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEP), but the lack of studies in this area and the contradictory results, especially in children, point to the need to investigate different protocols and parameters that could allow the study of top-down activity in humans. For this reason, the aim of this study was to analyze the effect of varying levels of contralateral noise on efferent activity in children by recording CAEPs with tone burst stimuli. Additionally, we aimed at verifying the effects of contralateral noise on cortical processing of speech stimuli. Methods: Monaural CAEPs were recorded using tone burst stimuli in quiet and with contralateral white noise at 60 dB and at 70 dB in 65 typically developing school-aged children (experiment 1), and using speech stimuli with contralateral white noise at 60 dB in 41 children (experiment 2). Results: In experiment 1, noise induced changes were observed only for P1 and P300 components. P1 latency was prolonged at both noise level conditions, P300 latency was prolonged only in the condition with noise at 70 dB, and P300 amplitude was reduced only in the condition with noise at 60 dB. In experiment 2, noise induced latency delays were observed on P1, P2, N2, and P300 components and amplitude reduction was observed only for N1. Conclusion: The effects of noise stimulation were observed on all CAEP components elicited by speech, but the same was not observed in the experiment with tone bursts. The study of noise effects on CAEPs can provide electrophysiological evidence on how difficult listening situations affect sound discrimination and stimulus evaluation at thalamocortical regions. We give an alternative derivation of (N, N)-isogenies between fast Kummer surfaces which complements existing works based on the theory of theta functions. The scientific community has reached a consensus on humans' important role as causative agents of climate change; however, branches of society are still sceptical about this. Climate change is a key issue for humanity and only the commitment to change human attitudes and lifestyles, at the global level, can be effective in its mitigation. With this purpose, it is important to convey the right message and prevent misinformation to manipulate people's minds. The present study aims to understand the factors shaping European citizens' thoughts on the causes of climate change. Using data from the European Social Survey 10 collected in 2022, we fitted statistical models using the people's thoughts on causes of climate change (natural, anthropogenic or both) as dependent variables. As independent variables, we used the impact of the media through time spent on news and time spent on the internet, level of education, level of trust in scientists, awareness of online or mobile misinformation and gender. We concluded that the typical European citizen who believes in anthropogenic causes of climate change is a female, is more literate, trusts more in scientists, is younger, spends more time reading the news and has more awareness of misinformation presence in online and mobile communications. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the central auditory system of children and adolescents with cystic fibrosis through behavioral assessment of central auditory processing and electrophysiological tests to investigate short and long-latency auditory potentials, comparing them with the results obtained in the control group. Methods: 117 from 7 to 21 years old patients were evaluated, 57 of them with cystic fibrosis and 60 of the control group, using behavioral evaluation of central auditory processing, auditory brainstem response and long latency auditory evoked potential. The comparison of the research groups was performed using ANOVA for Auditory Brain Response and P300 responses and Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests for Central Auditory Processing responses. Results: A statistically significant difference was found in the results of the GIN test between the groups and in the auditory brainstem response latency responses in waves I and V in the comparison between the groups with higher latencies in the study group. A difference was also found between latencies in the interpeak intervals I-III and III-V. The long latency auditory evoked potential analysis shows a statistically significant difference in the latency of the P300 potential, with higher latencies in the study group. Conclusion: Cystic fibrosis participants presented worse performance in the gaps-in-noise test compared to the control group in the evaluation of central auditory processing, which indicates impairment of temporal resolution auditory ability. They also showed increased latency in I and V waves of auditory brainstem response, as well as an increase P300 latency in long latency auditory evoked potential. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Morphological and functional cardiac involvement is rarely described in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) but there is evidence that they have an increased risk of cardiovascular (CV) events despite the lower prevalence of traditional CV risk factors. Objectives: Our systematic review and meta-analysis examined the relationship between IBD and cardiac function, namely the incidence of heart failure (HF) and subclinical echocardiographic changes. Data sources and methods: Two medical databases, PubMed and Scopus, were systematically searched up to September 2022 to identify all studies reporting HF and/or echocardiographic changes in IBD patients. Results: The qualitative analysis comprised a total of 18 studies (14 retrospective and 4 prospective studies) involving 59,838 patients. IBD was associated with subtle systolic and diastolic alterations, vascular dysfunction, increased risk for HF hospitalizations, and globally worse CV outcomes. Nine studies were included in the meta-analysis. In the IBD population, we found statistically significant reduced early to late diastolic transmitral flow (E/A), higher E to early diastolic mitral annular tissue velocity (E/e′), and decreased global longitudinal strain. Increased left atrial diameter and area were also present in IBD patients but no statistical significance was reached. Inter-atrial and right intra-atrial conduction delays were observed. Conclusion: The IBD population has an increased risk for left ventricular and atrial dysfunction, vascular changes, arrhythmias, and HF hospitalization. Screening with sensitive imaging like speckle tracking echocardiography could identify early subclinical changes. IBD is in fact a CV risk factor and tight inflammation control may reduce CV risk. New findings: Subclinical echocardiographic alterations are, to some extent, linked to the activity of the disease. Clinical research relevance: Echocardiographic evaluation may identify patients with inflammatory bowel disease at higher risk for cardiac events and determine those who might benefit from tighter inflammation control in order to achieve deeper levels of remission and decrease cardiovascular risk. Basic research relevance: Our findings should motivate research toward a deeper understanding of the role of echocardiographic parameters as tools to evaluate systemic inflammation and its potential as new treatment targets. Practitioners are recognized as one of the key components that make parenting interventions meaningful and helpful to families, and the impact of practitioners' skills on the outcomes of parenting interventions has been consistently recognized in research. However, the mechanisms and ongoing processes through which the practitioners' actions and skills may impact parental engagement and other outcomes remain unknown. This qualitative study explored parents' perceptions about the processes through which specific practitioners' skills contribute to the outcomes of the Incredible Years Basic Parent Program (IYPP). Twenty‐four Portuguese parents who had completed the IYPP were interviewed in four focus groups, and the data were analyzed through thematic analysis. Practitioners' skills were perceived by parents as having an impact on their engagement in the program, their process of change, and their interpersonal relationships. Practitioners were perceived to demonstrate their influence in the intervention process through six different roles: the roles of a confidant, a positive coach, a partner, a maestro, a tailor, and a congruent person. This study reinforces the prominent role of practitioners in enabling parental outcomes of an evidence‐based parenting program and suggests that more attention should be paid to continuing supervision and other professional development processes. The cork oak (Quercus suber L.) woodlands, known as montados in Portugal, hold significant economic, cultural, social, and environmental value. They are found in the Mediterranean Sea basin, particularly in the Iberian Peninsula, and sustain various activities like silvopastoralism, with cork being a primary product. Despite its economic significance, challenges such as climate change threaten its sustainability. This study aimed to analyze the edaphoclimatic variables affecting cork yield, thickness, price, and gross income in the Alentejo region of Portugal. A total of 35 farmers were selected for the data collection included in this study. Multivariable linear regressions were performed to establish relationships between cork yield, thickness, price, and gross income as dependent variables, various edaphoclimatic factors, and tree densities. A higher tree density correlates with an increased cork yield but a decreased cork thickness. Soil pH affects cork yield and thickness, with a lower pH favoring higher cork yields but thinner cork. A higher clay and silt content in horizon soil C enhances cork thickness and raises the price but reduces the cork yield. Higher accumulated precipitation and temperatures contribute to higher yields and thicknesses of cork. It is concluded that the relationships between the dependent and the independent variables are complex but partially explainable. Understanding these relationships is paramount to ensure sustainable management practices are adopted that are capable of addressing issues raised in the current context of climate change. Background: Global methylation refers to the total methylation in the DNA and can also be inferred from the Line 1 and Alu regions, as these repeats are very abundant in the genome. The main function of DNA methylation is to control gene expression and is associated with both normal and pathological mechanisms. DNA methylation depends on enzymes that generate the methyl radical (e.g., methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase—MTHFR) and attach this radical to the DNA (DNA methyltransferases—DNMT). Genetic variants such as single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in these genes can lead to changes in the activity or expression of MTHFR and DNMT proteins and consequently influence the DNA methylation profile. This review focuses on studies investigating inter-individual variations in the global DNA methylation profile associated with genetic polymorphisms in the MTHFR and DNMT genes. Methods: A narrative review was conducted, taking into account articles published in the last 15 years. Results: It was found that the SNPs rs1801131, rs1801133 and rs1537514 in the MTHFR gene, rs2241531, rs2228611, rs2228612, rs21124724 and the haplotype rs2288349, rs2228611, rs2228612, rs16999593 in the DNMT1 gene, rs2424909, rs998382, rs6058891, rs6058897, rs4911256, rs2889703 and rs1883729 in the DNMT3B were associated with the level of global DNA methylation, including LINE and Alu regions in different contexts. No association was found with polymorphisms in the DNMT3A gene. Conclusions: It is concluded that polymorphisms in the MTHFR and DNMT genes may influence the global DNA methylation profile in health, inflammation, tumours and mental illness. We determine a Simons type formula for spacelike submanifolds within a broad class of semi-Riemannian warped products, which includes the Robertson-Walker spacetimes. This formula enables us to extend results well-known from Riemannian geometry to the semi-Riemannian case. Specifically, when the ambient space has constant sectional curvature, such as Lorentz-Minkowski, de Sitter and anti-de Sitter spacetimes, we establish that compact spacelike hypersurfaces with parallel mean curvature vector field and non-negative sectional curvature are isoparametric hypersurfaces. This result constitutes a generalization of the Riemannian case within space forms, as demonstrated by Nomizu and Smyth in 1969. As an application, we extend analogous results previously established for pseudo-parallel immersions in Riemannian space forms. With this extension, we prove that any semi-parallel spacelike hypersurface with zero mean curvature into de Sitter spacetime is totally geodesic. Furthermore, we show that there are no semi-parallel spacelike hypersurfaces with zero mean curvature into Einstein-de Sitter spacetime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite the significant growth in consumer boycotts, research has devoted insufficient attention to the institutional factors that may motivate consumers to engage in such behaviour. This article aims to address this research gap. The main objective is to analyse the factors that affect consumer boycotts from an institutional sustainability perspective, by focusing on a specific dimension of institutional sustainability: institutional trust. Information and data came from the 2023 round of the European Social Survey, a cross-national survey covering 25 Countries. The article applies a binomial univariable logit model to test the influence of institutional trust and other potential drivers on boycott decisions and a multivariable binomial logistic regression to explore possible interrelationship between independent variables. The results confirm that boycotts are affected by institutional trust and other factors including demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the consumers, consumers' perception of ICT, satisfaction with public institutions, and consumers' evaluation of personal well-being. This article contributes to political consumerism literature by focusing on the impact of institutional trust in boycotting behaviour. This relationship is underexplored in existing literature, since most literature researches consumer boycotts from a triple-bottom perspective and neglects the effects of the institutional dimension of sustainability in consumer behaviour. The article brings new insights into the motivations of consumers at the political and institutional levels and opens new directions for future research to explore institutional sustainability related to the good practices of governance. For many years, high-power laser technology has been divided between industrial applications, which prioritize higher average powers and repetition rates, and academic research, which focuses on achieving higher peak powers and ultrashort pulse durations. The introduction of Yb-doped crystals in laser technology has paved the way for a new generation of laser sources that bridge the gap between industrial and academic requirements, combining high average power with ultrashort pulse capabilities. These advancements enable the integration of compact, adaptable front-end stages, making such lasers versatile for scientific applications. In Lisbon, the Laboratory of Intense Lasers leverages this technology with a system that combines commercial and custom-built front-end stages to enhance operational flexibility. In this paper, we present the current status of this facility and outline upcoming upgrades. We also showcase applications enabled by these high-power laser sources, including semiconductor studies, bi-photonics, and time-resolved spectroscopy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), a new member of the coronavirus family. While respiratory transmission is the main route, concerns have arisen regarding possible vertical transmission, which refers to the transmission of the virus from mother to fetus through the dissemination of viral particles in the amniotic fluid. Fetal viral infection via the placenta can affect the formation of the auditory system and lead to congenital hearing disorders. The aim of this research was to investigate the effects of vertical exposure to COVID-19 on the auditory system of newborns. Methodology: The study included a study group (SG) and a control group (CG). Selected during neonatal hearing screening, the SG consisted of 23 infants up to 1 year old whose mothers had been infected with SARS-CoV-2. The CG consisted of 15 infants whose mothers became pregnant after the end of the pandemic, had tested negative for COVID-19, and had no respiratory symptoms during pregnancy. The assessments for both groups were brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs), tympanometry, transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs), and distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs). The research was divided into two studies, one cross-sectional and the other longitudinal. Results: All participants exhibited absolute latencies within the normal range for waves I, III, and V, although in the SG, there was a statistically significant increase in the latency of wave I in the left ear. In terms of OAEs, in the SG, there appeared to be a tendency for TEOAEs to be absent at high frequencies. Over several months, there was a general decrease in the amplitude of high-frequency responses in both TEOAEs and DPOAEs. Conclusion: No evidence was found that vertical exposure to COVID-19 causes hearing loss, although there were signs of possible deterioration in hair cell functioning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. During and after COVID-19, audiovestibular symptoms and impairments have been reported. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the impacts of COVID-19 on the peripheral and central auditory systems of children and adolescents following the acute COVID-19 phase based on behavioral, electroacoustic, and electrophysiological audiological assessments. Methods: This is a primary, prospective, observational, and cross-sectional study of 23 children aged 8 to 15 years who acquired confirmed COVID-19 and who, before infection, had not had any auditory complaints or school complications. The results were compared with pre-pandemic data collected from a similar group of 23 children who had normal peripheral and central hearing and good school performance. Each participant answered a questionnaire about child development, school, and health history and underwent tests including pure-tone audiometry and high-frequency audiometry, imitanciometry, transient evoked otoacoustic emissions, and distortion product otoacoustic emissions. They also received tests of Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials, Long Latency Auditory Evoked Potentials, Dichotic Digits Test, Sentence Identification Test, Dichotic Consonant–Vowel Test, Frequency Pattern Test, and Gaps-In-Noise Test. Results: Significant differences were observed between the groups, with the study group showing worse thresholds compared to the control group at both standard audiometric frequencies and at higher frequencies, although both groups were still within normal limits (p ≤ 0.05). In addition, the study group had a higher prevalence of absent responses, as identified by otoacoustic emissions and acoustic reflexes. In terms of central auditory performance, the study group showed ABRs with significantly longer latencies of waves I, III, and V compared to the control group. The study group also performed less well on the Dichotic Digits and Pediatric Speech Identification tests. Background: Despite the potential effectiveness of bariatric surgery in promoting weight loss, a considerable proportion of patients still face the challenge of achieving optimal post-surgery outcomes. The timing of eating, in addition to the content of what is eaten, as well as chronotype and social jetlag (a marker of circadian misalignment), have been implicated in weight regulation. However, the current understanding of these chrono-related behaviours in individuals undergoing bariatric surgery is still scarce. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the role of chrono-nutrition, chronotype, and circadian misalignment in the weight-loss trajectory among individuals living with severe obesity who underwent bariatric surgery. Methods: The ChronoWise project is a prospective single-centre cohort study designed to follow patients experiencing bariatric surgery at the Santo António Local Health Unit (ULSSA), Porto, Portugal. Participants will be recruited and evaluated at pre-surgery and followed-up over 3 and 6 months after surgery. The baseline evaluation will be conducted face-to-face during the hospital stay and by telephone or video call on the subsequent evaluations, following standard procedures. Data collection includes sociodemographics, food intake, chrono-nutrition behaviours, sleep time behaviour, sleep quality, screen time, physical activity and exercise behaviours, anthropometric measurements, and biochemical parameters. The 'Munich Chronotype Questionnaire' will be used to assess chronotype and social jet lag. Chrono-nutrition dimensions will be measured by the 'Chrononutrition Profile—Questionnaire' in all evaluations. Weight and height will be self-reported and retrieved from medical registries. trajectories of weight-loss will be obtained. Background: Plasmodium vivax infection, when it occurs during pregnancy, has often been associated with serious adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, immunological alterations in pregnancy and their consequences have been little explored. We characterized the humoral immune response in pregnant women exposed to malaria by P. vivax antigens and its association with the maternal inflammatory profile and poor pregnancy outcomes. Methods: An observational cohort study in the Brazilian Amazon was conducted between 2013 and 2015. After applying exclusion criteria, 242 mother-child pairs were included in the analysis. Data on maternal infection, gestational outcomes, and inflammatory factors were evaluated in the maternal peripheral plasma. In samples from the first infection, the presence of total IgG and its subclasses in plasma against PvMSP119 protein were also quantified. Results: Previous exposure to malaria, observed by anti-total IgG antibodies to the PvMSP119 antigen, increased the inflammatory response to infection when the pregnant woman had malaria during pregnancy. IL-6 and IL-10 levels were positively correlated with parasitemia and with total IgG levels; but they were negatively correlated with the gestational age at delivery from Pv-infected woman. In multivariate linear regression analyses, IgG 1, 2 and 4 was negatively and positively associated with cytokines IL-6 and IL-10, respectively, in P. vivax-infection. Conclusions: An association between the humoral immune response and the peripheral inflammatory cytokine profile with the adverse outcomes in malaria in pregnancy by P. vivax was observed. Previous exposure to the parasite can influence the IL-6 and IL-10 response, which is associated with increased parasitemia, reduced maternal weight gain and premature delivery. Author summary: Plasmodium vivax malaria in pregnancy is also associated with several adverse outcomes, even in low-transmission regions such as South America. However, to our knowledge, no study has previously investigated the link between the humoral immune response due to previous exposure to P. vivax and the immunological profile during pregnancy infection and its association with poor pregnancy outcomes. In this study, after applying exclusion criteria, 242 mother-child pairs were evaluated for different immunological markers of malaria exposure in an endemic area in the Brazilian Amazon. We showed that previous exposure to P. vivax, through the humoral immune response to the PvMSP119 antigen, can exacerbate the inflammatory response during gestational malaria and is associated with increased parasitemia, reduced maternal weight gain and premature delivery. These findings help to understand the association between anti-PvMSP119 antibodies, considered exposure marker, and the maternal peripheral inflammatory profile throughout pregnancy, bringing important implications for understanding the immunobiology of the disease. Acanthamoeba is an opportunistic, free-living amoeba ubiquitous in the environment. Despite reports of its wide distribution in the Philippines’ freshwater resources, more information on the long-term viability of the Acanthamoeba species is needed. This study aimed to define the long-term viability of Acanthamoeba species in unpreserved environmental freshwater samples after 3 years of storage at room temperature. Stored water samples from 15 study sites were filtered through a 1.2-μm pore size glass microfiber filter, cultured in non-nutrient agar (NNA) lawned with Escherichia coli, and observed for amoebic growth for 14 days using light microscopy. Isolates from positive NNA culture were subjected to polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using JDP1 and JDP2 Acanthamoeba-specific primers. The study site positivity was 33% (5/15). Acanthamoeba genotype T4 and Acanthamoeba lenticulata were isolated from Luzon; Acanthamoeba divionensis was isolated from Visayas; and Acanthamoeba sp. and genotype T20 were isolated from Mindanao. The long-term viability of Acanthamoeba species is an added risk factor for the sustained contamination of aquatic resources and other sample matrices. This heightens the risk of transmission to humans and animals. This study evaluated the effects of the combination of beet powder, starter culture, and sodium erythorbate as a curing agent on the chemical and microbiological characteristics of restructured cooked ham during cold storage. Five treatments were developed: the positive control group (COP) with the addition of nitrite and sodium erythorbate, negative control treatment (CON) with the addition of sodium erythorbate; ham added with beet powder (AP), ham added with beet powder and starter culture (APC), ham added with beet powder, starter culture, and sodium erythorbate (APCE). The ham's curing properties and oxidative stability were analyzed for 30 days under refrigeration. The APCE treatment showed better conversion of nitrate to nitrite at time 0 (46.6 mg/kg). The COP sample showed higher residual nitrite content at time 0 (73.1 mg/kg) and nitrosohemochrome pigment (35.67 ppm). Combining beet powder with the commercial starter culture and sodium erythorbate in the formulation of restructured cooked hams positively affected the control of lipid and protein oxidation, making it an alternative to commercial sodium nitrite. Practical Application: Beetroot and arugula powders are added to the restructured cooked ham to prepare a clean‐label meat product without sodium nitrite. We report a case of Burkholderia mallei causing glanders in a 73-year-old patient from the Northeast Region of Brazil. The patient was hospitalized with severe pneumonia. Background: The objective was to analyze wideband acoustic absorbance and transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) from newborns without risk indicators of hearing loss and test the effectiveness of measuring TEOAEs under pressurized ear canal conditions. Methods: Evaluation of 102 newborns from a maternity hospital, who stayed in the well-baby nursery and did not have risk indicators for hearing loss. The procedures involved wideband tympanometry and TEOAEs performed at ambient pressure (AP) and at a pressure corresponding to maximum compliance (PP). Newborns were then divided into three groups according to their AP and PP results: G1 (PASS/PASS), G2 (FAIL/PASS), and G3 (FAIL/FAIL). Results: Comparing the three groups, pressurization improved the pass rate for G2 only. For wideband absorbance, differences were statistically significant for frequencies of 2, 3, and 6 kHz, with lower values under the AP condition. For TEOAEs, the differences were statistically significant in all bands, with lower values under the AP condition. Conclusions: Pressurization was effective in detecting more TEOAEs in G2, thus reducing the number of failures in neonatal hearing screening and reducing the need to return for retesting. Simple Summary: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) has a rising incidence and poor prognosis due to late diagnosis and limited treatments. Currently, treatment is based solely on TNM staging, without considering molecular tumor characterization. In the present study, we validated a combined amplification refractory mutation system (ARMS) and high-resolution melting analysis (HRMA) technique for detecting mutations in codon 12 of KRAS in PDAC tumor and plasma samples and assessed its prognostic value. We included 88 newly diagnosed PDAC patients, treated with either surgery, chemotherapy, or best supportive treatment only. Both tumor and plasma samples were analyzed, and the most frequent mutations were G12D (36%) and G12V (25%). KRAS mutations G12D and/or G12C in tumors and plasma were associated with lower progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) independently of disease stage or treatment performed. ARMS–HRMA offers a rapid, cost-effective method for detecting KRAS mutations and can aid in prognosis and treatment decisions. This study aimed to validate a technique that combines the amplification refractory mutation system (ARMS) with high-resolution melting analysis (HRMA) for detecting mutations in codon 12 of KRAS in tumor and plasma, and to assess its prognostic value. Methods: Prospective study including patients with newly diagnosed PDAC with tumor and plasma samples collected before treatment. Mutations in codon 12 of KRAS (G12D, G12V, G12C, and G12R) were detected using ARMS–HRMA and compared to Sanger sequencing (SS). Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to evaluate the prognostic significance of these mutations. Results: A total of 88 patients, 93% with ECOG-PS 0–1, 57% with resectable disease. ARMS–HRMA technique showed a higher sensitivity than SS, both in tumor and plasma (77% vs. 51%; 25 vs. 0%, respectively). The most frequent mutation was G12D (n = 32, 36%), followed by G12V (n = 22, 25%). On multivariate analysis, patients with G12D and/or G12C mutations, either in tumor or plasma, had lower PFS (HR 1.792, 95% CI 1.061–3.028, p = 0.029; HR 2.081, 95% CI 1.014–4.272, p = 0.046, respectively) and lower OS (HR 1.757, 95% CI 1.013–3.049, p = 0.045; HR 2.229, 95% CI 1.082–4.594, p = 0.030, respectively). Conclusions: ARMS–HRMA is a rapid and cost-effective method for detecting KRAS mutations in PDAC patients, offering the potential for stratifying prognosis and guiding treatment decisions. The article discusses the similarities and differences between interstitial lung disease (ILD) associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic sclerosis (SSc). Both conditions involve an immune-mediated process followed by fibrotic changes, similar to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. The study compares the clinical course and outcomes of RA-ILD and SSc-ILD, highlighting differences in patient characteristics, disease progression, and treatment responses. The findings suggest that RA-ILD may have a more progressive fibrotic phenotype and require different management approaches compared to SSc-ILD. Poor ovarian response (POR) patients often face the risk of not having enough competent oocytes. Then, aspirating small follicles could serve as a strategy to increase their number. Many efforts have been addressed to associate follicular size with oocyte competence, but results are controversial. Therefore, our study aimed to evaluate oocyte maturation and developmental competence, along with a non-invasive oocyte-maturation-related miRNA signature in oocytes retrieved from both large and small follicles. A total of 178 follicles, from 31 POR patients, were aspirated and measured on the day of ovarian puncture. Follicular diameters, oocyte collection, oocyte maturation, fertilization, blastocysts, and good-quality blastocyst rates were recorded. Simultaneously, follicular fluids were collected to quantify their miRNA expression. The efficacy of oocyte retrieval along with oocyte maturation, fertilization, and blastulation rates tended to increase with follicular size, but few significant differences were found. Despite there being significantly more collected oocytes from follicles > 11.5 mm compared to follicles ≤ 11.5 mm (p < 0.05), oocytes from the latter were also mature, with no significant differences in the miRNA signature, but only those > 13.5 mm demonstrated developmental competence. In conclusion, 11.5 mm follicles can produce mature oocytes, but only those larger than 13.5 mm yielded transferable embryos. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective - The aim of this study is to raise awareness about External Occipital Protuberance (EOP) enlargement in children, its typically benign anatomical variant, and the importance of considering associated conditions in diagnosis and management. Case Report - We reviewed the cases of four male patients, presenting with EOP enlargement. Among the cases, one involved a newborn diagnosed with Menkes disease, a rare genetic disorder affecting copper transport, which was associated with occipital exostosis. The other three cases involved adolescents with varying degrees of EOP enlargement, linked to factors such as prior trauma and excessive screen time. Conclusion - While EOP enlargement is generally a benign anatomical variant, this study underscores the importance of differential diagnosis, particularly in the pediatric population. Clinicians should be aware of the potential, albeit rare, associations with serious conditions such as Menkes disease. Although hissing is a common strategy of defence used by snakes, especially of the Phytonidae and Boidae families, few studies have described in detail the acoustics components of this behaviour. Here we gathered eight recordings from six different boas from Brazil and extracted acoustic measurements from their hissing sounds. We also examined the potential of our measurements to encode individual identity using discriminant function analyses (DFAs) and to correlate with body length using linear mixed models (LMMs). Boas produce from four to 12 hisses per minute (7.13 ± 3.04) evoked by a negative stimulus, a visual looming stimulus generated by researcher's approach. Each hiss usually has two parts (the first louder part and the second softer part) that are basically broadband white noises split by a short silent interval. The first hiss part also has more frequency modulations and narrower bandwidth than the second hiss part. The DFAs correctly assigned all hisses to their correspondent individuals in the testing data. The first discriminant function explained most of the variance (⩾84%) in the discrimination between groups for the entire hiss and for both hiss parts in the training data subset. Frequency parameters and spectral entropy (for entire hiss and hiss part 1) and the mean frequency and duration (for hiss part 2) were the strongest absolute loadings in the DFAs. Intraspecific morphological traits (e.g. sexual dimorphism and ontogenetic variations) may influence the sound parameters, as detected by individual variations and the tendency for larger individuals to produce lower frequency hisses. Further studies may investigate these aspects in detail, including anatomy of the snake's larynx and experiments with different types of predators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Navigating social‐ecological systems toward sustainable trajectories is an important challenge of the Anthropocene. Models of social‐ecological systems can increase our understanding of how social and ecological subsystems interact, their response to environmental changes, and how their dynamics may be altered by management interventions. However, the level of representational detail required for models to describe a particular social‐ecological system with high fidelity (i.e., accurately quantifying system dynamics) may hamper both the interpretability of model results and our ability to identify key processes and feedbacks within the system. In contrast, stylized models describe simplified interactions between a small subset of social‐ecological system elements. Stylized models are a useful tool to identify potential consequences of specific key processes and feedbacks on system functioning. However, the relatively low level of representational detail in these models limits their ability to deliver concrete management options for a particular social‐ecological system. Here, we describe how an exploratory modeling approach can utilize the strengths of stylized models before the construction of social‐ecological system models with high fidelity and representational detail. This exploratory modeling approach is an iterative strategy, with the initial steps comprising the development of stylized models informed by empirical observations. We illustrate this with two examples of stylized modeling of isolated and connected social‐ecological systems. Through repeated confrontation of alternative models with empirical data, exploratory modeling provides useful stepping stones toward the development of models that describe social‐ecological systems in increasingly specific settings with increasing levels of representational detail. When these latter types of models reach a high level of fidelity, they could be used for scenario‐based analyses and participatory decision‐making processes. At this stage, the conceptual insights previously obtained during the exploratory modeling phase may aid in the interpretation and communication of the outcomes of scenario‐based analyses. Hence, exploratory modeling aims to create a synergy between the insights obtained from stylized models and system‐specific, high‐fidelity models in order to generate a deep understanding of the drivers of social‐ecological system dynamics, and how to leverage these drivers to initiate desired changes. Background: Microbial larvicides containing both LysiniBacillus sphaericus and Bacillus thuringiensis svar. israelensis (Bti) insecticidal crystals can display advantages for mosquito control. This includes a broader action against larvae that are refractory to the Binary (Bin) toxin from L. sphaericus, as Bin-resistant Culex quinquefasciatus and Aedes aegypti naturally refractory larvae, which often co-habit urban areas of endemic countries for arboviruses. Our principal goal was to assess the toxicity of a combined L. sphaericus/Bti larvicide (Vectomax FG™) to Cx. quinquefasciatus (susceptible CqS and Bin-resistant CqR) and Ae. aegypti (Rocke) and to determine its persistence in the breeding sites with those larvae. Methods: The toxicity of a combined L. sphaericus/Bti product (VectoMax FG™) to larvae was performed using bioassays, and persistence was evaluated in simulate field trials carried out under the shade, testing two label concentrations during 12 weeks. A laboratory strain SREC, established with CqS and CqR larvae, was kept during four generations to evaluate the ability of the L. sphaericus/Bti to eliminate resistant larvae. Results: The L. sphaericus/Bti showed toxicity (mg/L) to larvae from all strains with a decreasing pattern for CqS (LC50 = 0.006, LC90 = 0.030), CqR (LC50 = 0.009, LC90 = 0.069), and Rocke (LC50 = 0.042, LC90 = 0.086). In a simulated field trial, the larvicide showed a persistence of 6 weeks and 8 weeks, controlling larvae from all strains in containers with 100 L of water, using 2 g or 4 g per container (100 L), respectively. The treatment of SREC larvae with L. sphaericus/Bti showed its capacity to eliminate the Bin-resistant individuals using suitable concentrations to target those larvae. Conclusions: Our results showed the high efficacy and persistence of the L. sphaericus/Bti larvicide to control Cx. quinquefasciatus and Ae. aegypti that might cohabit breeding sites. These findings demonstrated that such larvicides can be an effective tool for controlling those species in urban areas with a low potential for selecting resistance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative condition associated with deficit in reaction time which can lead to falls, resulting in limited independence, diminished quality of life, heightened rates of institutionalization and increased healthcare costs. We aimed to examine the effects of an acupuncture protocol in motor time response after an auditory stimulus. Methods: This study employed a case series design. Reaction time to exposed rhythmic and random auditory stimuli outcomes were evaluated at six different moments over a month-long acupuncture treatment protocol using the MP 36 system from Biopac Systems. Results: We observed a tendency to have more pronounced improvements in the time response in the more affected side of the body compared with the contralateral one. Patients tended to show better values of response to random auditory stimuli compared to rhythmic auditory ones. We also observed a tendency to obtain better results when considering the accumulative effects of the acupuncture protocol. Conclusions: Our findings indicated a possible role of reaction time as a sensitive and useful tool for motor function assessment in PD patients. Also, from our results, we concluded that the acupuncture protocol used may lead to an improvement in efficacy of motor response after aleatory and rhythmic stimulus; we also found a tendency for a higher efficacy of acupuncture in random stimuli responses in the first stages of the disease. The sweet potato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci MED (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), is highly harmful to solanaceous crops. The use of essential oils (EOs) is promising for the management of several insect pests, promoting both lethal and sublethal effects. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of sublethal concentrations of Pelargonium graveolens L'Her (Geraniaceae) EO on the feeding behavior of B. tabaci MED on tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicum L., Solanaceae). For this research, the electrical penetration graph (EPG) technique was used to monitor whitefly stylet activities on their host plants. Two sets of plants were previously sprayed with two concentrations of EO (the LC25 and LC50, which were determined in a mortality test), a third set was treated with the insecticide cyantraniliprole, and a fourth set received a control treatment. Our results indicate that the insecticide cyantraniliprole and the EO could both reduce the stylet feeding activity of B. tabaci MED, as well as reduce the number and duration of phloem sap ingestion events (waveform E2), which could avoid or reduce the transmission of viruses. Thus, the application of sublethal concentrations of P. graveolens EO, as well as exposure to cyantraniliprole, negatively affected the feeding behavior of B. tabaci MED.
