Aging infrastructures require huge budgets to preserve their functionality and the lack of effective maintenance leads to increasing deterioration and therefore higher repair costs. For these reasons, assessing the condition of infrastructures becomes mandatory, with particular attention to the ones still in service even when their life limit has been exceeded. In particular, this problem is really important in Countries, like Italy, in which there are several operating bridges at the end of their service life. In this framework, many companies responsible for the management of road networks have turned their interest towards Bridge Management Systems (BMS). This paper presents a fast and low‐cost method for condition rating of reinforced concrete bridges. The proposal is based on visual inspection and non‐destructive testing. A specific parameter is designed to take into account the mechanical degradation of materials and the damage location at the structural sub‐component level. Within this work, the causes of collapses and damages occurred in masonry artefacts have been evaluated to properly identify suitable monitoring and restoration methods. In this regard, a comprehensive literature review has been performed. Based on the results, moisture has been found to be a critical parameter, that affects the structural health of masonry artefacts. Various non-destructive methods were employed to measure moisture and monitor the materials involved, including Infrared Thermography, Electrical Resistivity Tomography, Ground Penetrating Radar, Laser Scanning and Digital Terrestrial Photogrammetry, Global Navigation Satellite Systems, Unilateral Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Laser-Induced Fluorescence technique, Acoustic Imaging and Acoustic Tomography, Geographic Information System, on-site survey process and computer modeling of the structure with specific FEM software. Finally, the implementation of tie-beams, Fiber Reinforced Polymers layers, ventilation, draining systems, and high-quality materials are proposed as solutions for controlling the moisture effect and retrofitting. Several Italian cities are characterized by the presence of centuries-old historic walls, which have a cultural heritage value and, due to their structural role as a retaining wall, often influence the safety of adjacent buildings and infrastructure. Ancient urban walls are increasingly subject to instability and collapse phenomena, because the greater frequency of extreme meteoric events aggravates the static condition of the walls and of the wall–soil system. Since the seismic risk in the contexts in which the historical urban walls are located is often medium-high, it is advisable to evaluate the influence of soil moisture on the seismic response of the soil–structure system. In this paper, the seismic vulnerability of historical urban walls was examined through considering scenarios of both dry and wet soil, in order to evaluate the seismic response of the structure as a function of soil imbibition. Seismic vulnerability analyses were carried out on the case study of the historical urban masonry walls of Volterra (Italy), which have been affected by two major collapses in the last ten years. Seismic vulnerability was assessed by means of the limit equilibrium method and the finite element method, and through adopting proper soil imbibition models. The results highlight which sections of the walls are at greater seismic risk due to the presence of soil moisture, as well as the influence of soil imbibition on the structural safety and failure mechanism. This paper proposes a stochastic life-cycle assessment (LCA) as a general stochastic formulation to quantify the environmental impact of an engineering system. The assessment is performed in terms of embodied energy, energy consumption, and the carbon footprint during the service life of the system. At the same time, its ability to resist a hazard is considered. The proposed formulation is general and takes into account the effects of shocks (robustness) and gradual deterioration (durability), assessing the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions due to repair or reconstruction after an undesired event. The formulation is used in an example of a 4-story reinforced concrete (RC) office building, whose construction site is relevantly seismic. Two different seismic design levels are compared. Featured Application: Non-destructive tests to have a rapid condition assessment of bridges, using the Fast-Falling Weight Deflectometer. In this paper, the use of Fast Falling Weight Deflectometer (Fast-FWD) is analyzed as a non-destructive and quick test procedure to evaluate the efficiency of short-span bridges. The Fast-FWD is an instrument that can produce a broadband dynamic force up to an impact value of 120 KN: The impact is constant and replicable, providing accurate action measures of bridge stiffness in a truly short period (30 ms). In this paper, a single-span reinforced concrete bridge is investigated, using the Fast-FWD. The considered bridge, approximately 12.0 m long and 15.5 m wide, was in critical condition. The bridge is in a suburban principal road near to the City of Cagliari in Sardinia (Italy), with an Annual Average Daily Traffic of 13,500 vehicles/day, and was suddenly closed, creating serious problems for urban mobility. In these conditions, the investigation through other standard techniques is time-consuming and labor intensive. For this reason, it is important to introduce methods that can be rapid, accurate and cost-efficient. In this paper, bridge stiffness values obtained during the in situ experimental campaign were compared with finite element models values. Summary: In the out‐of‐plane assessment of rocking walls, a relevant and yet uncertain aspect is the influence of energy dissipated during motion due to impacts and restraints, such as a floor or tie rods. Therefore, in situ rocking tests on unrestrained and restrained unreinforced masonry walls, made of composite (rubble + blockwork) masonry, were performed and analyzed. The restraint is given by steel springs of assigned stiffness, simulating a floor connected to full‐scale (4 × 1 × 0.6 m3) specimens from a dismantling building. The specimens are displaced from a static equilibrium position and released, allowing to evaluate energy dissipation. The coefficient of restitution is estimated as the square root of consecutive peak velocities of the same sign, to take into account nonhomogeneities in walls. For unrestrained walls, experimental coefficients of restitution vary between 81 and 88% of analytical ones, confirming the latter as conservative. For restrained configurations, experimental coefficients of restitution are between 74% and 83% of analytical values of unrestrained walls. Hence, an additional energy damping can be ascribed to the springs. Equivalent viscous damping ratios of a nonlinear rocking system are calculated by considering a velocity logarithmic decrement, resulting between 6% and 8% (unrestrained condition) and between 8% and 10% (restrained condition). An analytical formula is proposed for estimating the coefficient of restitution for restrained walls if the dynamic properties of the unrestrained wall and the horizontal restraint are known. The heavy rainfalls occurring in Italy in the last few years focused the attention on the vulnerability of the land and the related infrastructures. Critical situations involving losses of human life and deterioration or failure of relevant structures are frequent. These events were due to: (1) improper land-use; (2) aging of infrastructures, (3) insufficient maintenance and protection; (4) climate changes causing rainstorms similar to tropical events. The failure of small bridges in road networks plays a key role in this sense. The present paper aims to analyse the behaviour of small bridges during rainfalls or floods. In particular, the recent case of Livorno is analysed. The Italian territory has about 460.000 small bridges, mostly designed without the support of technical codes or a proper interaction between the hydraulic and structural aspects. A large part of them can be submerged by water flows during rainfalls and pushed by unexpected actions. The failure scenarios allow identifying the hydraulic and structural vulnerabilities through a specific survey. The present paper deals with the influence ofmaterial variability on the seismic vulnerability assessment of reinforced concrete buildings. Existing r.c. buildings are affected by a strong dispersion of material strengths of both the base materials. This influences the seismic response in linear and nonlinear static analysis. For this reason, it is useful to define a geometrical parameter called "material eccentricity". As a referencemodel, an analysis of a two storey building is presentedwith a symmetrical plan but asymmetrical material distribution. Furthermore, an analysis of two real buildings with a similar issue is performed. Experimental data generate random material distributions to carry out a probabilistic analysis. By rotating the vector that defines the position of the center of strength it is possible to describe a strength domain that is characterized by equipotential lines in terms of the Risk Index. Material eccentricity is related to the Ultimate Shear of non-linear static analyses. This relevant uncertainty, referred to as the variation of the center of strength, is not considered in the current European and Italian Standards. The retrofitting of existing masonry buildings is now a crucial problem for Europe. Indeed, structural safety and energy efficiency should represent the target of any renovation. The proposal of a new synthetic performance parameter is presented and discussed. Following this approach, in this paper, after a review of the main studies available in the literature, a proposal of a new performance parameter approach is presented and discussed. It is capable of taking into account both the structural and thermal aspects of masonry retrofitting. An emblematic set of reinforcements and energy improvements for masonry walls is examined. An example, generalized formulas, and a simultaneous evaluation of the role of multiple structural and thermal parameters on masonry buildings are proposed, with a view to optimize several categories of costs related to the intervention. The effect of irregularities due to the non-uniform distribution of material properties on structural elements of a significant real case is here investigated. Mechanical tests performed on a typical Italian reinforced concrete (r.c.) school building built in the 1960s showed irregularity in the distribution of compression strength in columns, even though the construction is featured by substantially symmetric distribution of the frames. Extreme scenarios in the distribution of irregularities in compression strength of concrete columns are analyzed, with the hypothesis of rigid or deformable slabs. The seismic analysis showed the influence of the response due to the irregular distributions of concrete strength. A proposal of equivalent "material eccentricity" is shown to account for the mentioned irregularity. Furthermore, the practical solution of reinforcement to mitigate the effects of irregularities is also described. It consists of couple of external r.c. walls stiffened by r.c. buttresses added to the building, connected by transverse slabs. The ‘Triple R’ approach on the restoration of dry stone walls, using recognizable, reversible and respectful constructive techniques is here illustrated. A set of restoration procedures are explained and applied to a UNESCO World Heritage site in Al-Baleed (Salalah, Sultanate of Oman) in the ‘Land of Frankincense’. The procedures were adapted in an innovative way to take into account the climate features of the Indian Ocean area (specifically, the effects of the monsoon season). All the restoration procedures aimed at conserving the site’s original architectural features by using only suitable stones and materials found on-site. Specific procedures have been adopted to consolidate walls, gates, foundations and sloping surfaces. Simple on-site mechanical tests and evaluation methods have been developed for a quick assessment of the safety level of the restored walls to ease future archaeological excavations. The application is related to a waterfront side of the ancient city built around the ninth century and added to over the next five centuries. The paper deals with the behavior of restrained rocking blocks under seismic actions. Structural or non-structural masonry or r.c. elements, such as building façades or pre-cast panels subjected to out-of-plane modes, may be assimilated to rocking blocks restrained by horizontal springs. Horizontal restraints can represent flexible floors or steel anchorages or any anti-seismic device designed to impede overturning probability. Their effect could improve, in most cases, the dynamic response of blocks in terms of reduction of rotation amplitude. Nevertheless, this effectiveness could vanish or, surprisingly, affect the response in negative way, resulting in overturning when low values of stiffness or one-sided motion in particular conditions are assumed. Two cases of horizontal restraints are analyzed: (1) concentrated restraint as single spring and (2) smeared restraint as spring bed with constant or linearly variable stiffness. The single stabilizing or destabilizing terms of the formulation are here analyzed and commented, providing practical evaluations to obtain enhancement of response in static and dynamic perspective. A numerical example of a masonry façade with non-linear boundary conditions has been provided highlighting how the choice of stiffness values affects the oscillatory motion and rebound effects. This article illustrates the production process, the structural calculations and the assembly phases of the wooden walls of the Japan Pavilion at Expo 2015 in Milan, designed by Atsushi Kitagawara Architects (AKA). The pavilion, one of the most popular construction of this international event, was built almost exclusively with precast interlocking. The production process and the assembly phases were optimized to construct the wooden walls (with a height of 4-12 m) in a short time frame and with a high level of quality. The paper deals with the use of vibro-compressed units with bio-natural components on construction. The proposed mix design of vibrated blocks consist of cork granules and/or hemp shives, with the aim to substitute polymeric elements or expanded clay, together with the use of natural hydraulic lime (NHL) as binder. An experimental campaign is presented, with mechanical tests to evaluate the influence of each component on flexural and compression behavior. The proposal is also investigated from a productive point of view, considering how it can be harmonized in the productive process of lightweight aggregate concrete units without modifications in the productive process. The tested elements could perform a certain reduction of the carbon impact, maintaining interesting mechanical properties. The application of the proposed units in several contexts, as separating elements joined with structural components, is considered to improve rehabilitation or to obtain higher performances in buildings. Experimental tests and constructive assessments are presented for a simple bamboo framed structure with innovative low-cost and low technology joints, specifically conceived for small buildings in developing countries. Two full scale one-storey bamboo frames have been designed by using the simplest joints solution among three different tested typologies. The entire building process is based on low-technology and natural materials: bamboo canes, wooden cylinders, plywood plates and canapé rods. The first full scale specimen (Unit A) is a one-storey single deck truss structure subjected to monotonic collapse test; the second full scale specimen (Unit B) is a one-storey double deck truss structure used to evaluate the construction time throughout assembling tests. The first full scale specimen showed ductility in collapse and ease in strengthening; the second one showed remarkable ease and speed in assembling structural elements. Finally several constructive solutions are suggested for the design of simple one-storey buildings; they are addressed to four purposes (housing, school, chapel, health center) by the composition of the proposed full scale bamboo frames. An experimental campaign is presented to determine the effects of high temperatures on the mechanical properties of several materials for masonry walls (blocks and mortars), testing a series of cylindrical specimens (diameter of 100 mm and height of 200 mm). After compression tests at 20 °C, an experimental procedure was designed for high-temperature testing. The cylindrical samples were heated in a muffle furnace, then were inserted into a specific apparatus (called 'thermos') for maintaining the prescribed temperature, and finally were subjected to a mechanical compression test. The results obtained by applying this procedure show a common variation of the strength, reduction of modulus of elasticity, and corresponding increments of the ultimate strain with temperature enhancement. This paper addresses the structural damage to the main buildings of the cities of Reggiolo and Carpi after the primary earthquake shocks on May 20th and 29th, 2012, in Emilia Romagna. The damage survey, performed via form-based methods, highlights the different seismic behaviour of several types of buildings, especially those having historical features, and the consequences of the damage in terms of costs. Moreover, an analysis of some failure mechanisms activated in Reggiolo enables the evaluation of the local peak ground acceleration, due to the soil amplification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An in-situ experimental testing campaign on stone masonry walls performed in the Volterra (Pisa, Italy) hospital complex is described herein. The test-site is a disused building, dated back to the early 1930s, which offered the opportunity to perform destructive and non-destructive tests with multiple purposes: the masonry mechanical characterization of a wide group of nearby similar buildings, the comparison of several testing methods applied on masonry with chaotic texture and the development of the innovative twin panel test procedure. In this context, the failure mode for panels under shear and compression forces was interpreted and, through the results obtained from different techniques (flat-jack test, drilling test, diagonal compression test and shear compression test), a safety domain shear vs. compression for the rubble masonry type was also drawn up. The cross validation of several testing methods can suggest strategies to determine shear strength, deformation properties and ductility capacity of stone masonry walls with highly irregular texture. A series of missions, starting from early 2005 up to 2009, have been managed to restore the ancient city walls of Sumhuram (4th century BC to 6th century AD) in the site of Khor Rori, with a group of archaeologists of the University of Pisa. Also, from early 2007, a series of missions have been managed to consolidate the dry masonry Fortress in UNESCO site of Al Balid erected circa 1100 ad with archaeologists of the University of Missouri. Both sites are located in the area of Salalah in southern part of the Sultanate of Oman. The sequence of dry season and rainy season during the Khareef period (Monsoon phenomena) caused several collapses on the excavated masonry structures, with risks for safety of visitors and archaeologists. The walls of Sumhuram, affected by the loss of connection between the two limestone masonry faces, have been rebuilt with the original texture of bricks using a new mix design for mortar joints with the same colors, consistency, and proper strength and durability. The safety level of the consolidation works is evaluated by observing on site the shape of the collapse surfaces and using the classical limit analysis approach. The collapses of Al Balid dry masonry walls have been originated by the loss of permeability of the external wall faces due to the progressive filling of joint by soil. Consolidation activities consisted of rebuilding with the same blocks down and substituting the earth behind the external layers with gravel and high permeability filling. An analytical model of dry rigid block masonry with frictional interfaces has been used to represent the out-of-plane behavior, in order to define the maximum height of excavation and the maximum free height of the restored walls to guarantee safety for workers. The design criteria for a new, low-cost base dissipation technique for simple masonry buildings are presented together with the results of some numerical analyses. The proposed apparatus, termed the "reinforced cut wall" (RCW), is made up of a layer of weak mortar (50 mm) and a 4- mm -thick elastomer membrane sheath laid between the foundation and base of the wall, which is further reinforced by a series of vertical steel rods (8–12 mm in diameter) connecting it to the foundation. Experimental trials have been performed on a sample set of dissipators in order to establish their mechanical properties and define suitable assembly techniques. Numerical simulations, consisting of incremental nonlinear static analyses, of several types of masonry buildings highlight the system's efficient performance in terms of force-displacement law. For moderate horizontal actions, the RCW does not cause relevant foundation-base displacement. However, when a prescribed force limit is exceeded, friction behavior of the weak layers of the RCW permit inelastic deformation along both horizontal directions, while the vertical steel rods ensure an elastic restoring force for rocking movements as well. Recent earthquakes have caused unacceptably high death tolls. We, the editors of the World Housing Encyclopedia, believe that reducing such an unacceptably high loss of life from earthquakes is the most important challenge facing the global earthquake engineering community. This paper acknowledges the continuing disparity between life loss from earthquakes in developing and developed countries, and the increasing vulnerability in developing countries. A sampling of current efforts to improve construction practices includes the publication of earthquake tips in India, construction manuals in Colombia, and the formation of various international networks to promote collaboration and information sharing. Future possibilities include more rewards for research into inadequately engineered construction, greater emphasis on small-scale, local efforts, and a stronger emphasis on advocacy. A plane elastic-plastic solid body presenting kinematic hardening is used to simulate a pair of dampers at the base of a rigid structure and determine the energy dissipation under conditions of assigned, homogeneous cyclic loading. The well-known von Mises theory of plasticity is applied with the aim of obtaining analytical solutions to the problem. Such solutions are arrived at by first calculating the Odqvist parameter, which yields dimensionless relations that depend on the external loads and mechanical properties of the material. The results, in terms of dissipated energy, are given for the case of a sinusoidal process, represented with the help of dimensionless parameters useful for engineering applications. The combination of structural and thermal efficiency is a new frontier in civil engineering. Indeed, the retrofitting strategies should optimize costs and technical solutions from these two points of view. If a technical solution is able to provide an improvement of both structural and energetic behavior, then the utility of the intervention can better justify the economic investment. In this paper, a meso-scale approach (i.e., façade-scale) for integrated interventions applied on masonry façades is proposed. The structural performance of the façade is evaluated by considering base shear and ductility of the structural element through non-linear static analyses. Moreover, the thermal indicator, that is the thermal transmittance, is computed with a simplified approach in terms of an equivalent wall, taking into account the role of the windows and doors of the façade. As proof of concept, the procedure is applied to a façade of an existing masonry building. Economic and environmental iso-cost curves are obtained to tune the interventions conceived for a real case study, analyzing the benefit offered by different retrofitting solutions.
