Under ideal conditions, the optical path for the two counter-propagating beams in a square ring laser cavity is expected to be entirely reciprocal. This property, together with the absence of any moving parts in the gyro, makes ring lasers a very useful rotation-sensing device. For a typical aircraft application, a sensor stability of the order of 0.01 ° /h and a resolution of 1 ppm is required. The demands for inertial rotation sensing in space geodesy are three orders of magnitude higher. Therefore, the perturbations from the presence of the active laser gain medium inside the cavity cannot be ignored. While these perturbations can be sufficiently contained in aviation gyros due to the much lower requirements, they cause a notable bias in large ring laser gyroscopes for the observation of the instantaneous rotation rate of the Earth. In this paper, we report on an improved model for bias stability from the presence of the laser gain medium in the gyro cavity of the large ring laser "G" at the Geodetic Observatory Wettzell. Single-component ring lasers have provided high-resolution observations of Earth's rotation rate as well as local earthquake- or otherwise-induced rotational ground motions. Here, we present the design, construction and operational aspects of ROMY, a four-component, tetrahedral-shaped ring laser installed at the Geophysical Observatory Fürstenfeldbruck near Munich, Germany. Four equilateral, triangular-shaped ring lasers with 12 m side length provide rotational motions that can be combined to construct the complete vector of Earth's rotation from a point measurement with very high resolution. Combined with a classic broad-band seismometer, we obtain the most accurate 6 degree-of-freedom ground motion measurement system to date, enabling local and teleseismic observations as well as the analysis of ocean-generated Love and Rayleigh waves. The specific design and construction details are discussed as are the resulting consequences for permanent observations. We present seismic observations of local, regional and global earthquakes as well as seasonal variations of ocean-generated rotation noise. The ring laser gyroscope (RLG) technique has been investigated for over 20 years as a potential complement to space geodetic techniques in measuring Earth rotation. However, RLGs are also sensitive to changes in their terrestrial orientation. Therefore in this paper, we review how the high-frequency band (i.e. signals shorter than 0.5 cycle per day) of the known phenomena causing site deformation contribute to the RLG observable, the Sagnac frequency. We study the impact of solid Earth tides, ocean tidal loading and non-tidal loading phenomena (atmospheric pressure loading and continental hydrosphere loading). Also, we evaluate the differences between available models of the phenomena and the importance of the Love numbers used in modeling the impact of solid Earth tides. Finally, we compare modeled variations in the instrument orientation with the ones observed with a tiltmeter. Our results prove that at the present accuracy of the RLG technique, solid Earth tides and ocean tidal loading effects have significant effect on RLG measurements, and continental hydrosphere loading can be actually neglected. Regarding the atmospheric loading model, its application might introduce some undesired signals. We also show that discrepancies arising from the use of different models can be neglected, and there is almost no impact arising from the use of different Love numbers. Finally, we discuss differences between data reduced with tiltmeter observations and these reduced with modeled signal, and potential causes of this discrepancies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Doppler orbitography uses the Doppler shift in a transmitted signal to determine the orbital parameters of satellites including range and range rate (or radial velocity). We describe two techniques for atmospheric-limited optical Doppler orbitography measurements of range rate. The unstabilised technique determines the Doppler shift directly from a heterodyne measurement of the returned optical signal. The stabilised technique aims to improve the precision of the first by suppressing atmospheric phase noise imprinted on the transmitted optical signal. We demonstrate the performance of each technique over a 2.2 km horizontal link with a simulated in-line velocity Doppler shift at the far end. A horizontal link of this length has been estimated to exhibit nearly half the total integrated atmospheric turbulence of a vertical link to space. Without stabilisation of the atmospheric effects, we obtained an estimated range rate precision of 17 μ m s - 1 at 1 s of integration. With active suppression of atmospheric phase noise, this is improved by three orders of magnitude to an estimated range rate precision of 9.0 nm s - 1 at 1 s of integration, and 1.1 nm s - 1 when integrated over 60 s . This represents four orders of magnitude improvement over the typical performance of operational ground to space X-Band systems in terms of range rate precision at the same integration time. The performance of this system is a promising proof of concept for coherent optical Doppler orbitography. There are many additional challenges associated with performing these techniques from ground to space that were not captured within the preliminary experiments presented here. The development of techniques for the comparison of distant clocks and for the distribution of stable and accurate time scales has important applications in metrology and fundamental physics research. Additionally, the rapid progress of frequency standards in the optical domain is presently demanding additional efforts for improving the performances of existing time and frequency transfer links. Present clock comparison systems in the microwave domain are based on GPS and two-way satellite time and frequency transfer (TWSTFT). European Laser Timing (ELT) is an optical link presently under study in the frame of the ESA mission Atomic Clock Ensemble in Space (ACES). The on-board hardware for ELT consists of a corner cube retro-reflector (CCR), a single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD), and an event timer board connected to the ACES time scale. Light pulses fired toward ACES by a laser ranging station will be detected by the SPAD diode and time tagged in the ACES time scale. At the same time, the CCR will re-direct the laser pulse toward the ground station providing precise ranging information. We have carried out a ground-based feasibility study at the Geodetic Observatory Wettzell. By using ordinary satellites with laser reflectors and providing a second independent detection port and laser pulse timing unit with an independent time scale, it is possible to evaluate many aspects of the proposed time transfer link before the ACES launch. Measurements of rotations are unique because of their inherent property making them absolute and without an external frame of reference. Modern rotation rate sensors, due to their ever-increasing accuracy, can be applied in direct modal analyses of bar structures, as illustrated in Figure 6, where a beam equipped with a dense array of translation/rotation sensors is presented. In seismology, an increased effort to observe all 12 degrees of freedom of seismic ground motion by complementing translational ground motion observations with measurements of strain and rotational motions could be witnessed in recent decades, aiming at an enhanced probing and understanding of Earth and other planetary bodies. The evolution of optical instrumentation, in particular large-scale ring laser installations, such as G-ring and ROMY (ROtational Motion in seismologY), and their geoscientific application have contributed significantly to the emergence of this scientific field. The currently most advanced, large-scale ring laser array is ROMY, which is unprecedented in scale and design. As a heterolithic structure, ROMY's ring laser components are subject to optical frequency drifts. Such Sagnac interferometers require new considerations and approaches concerning data acquisition, processing and quality assessment, compared to conventional, mechanical instrumentation. We present an automated approach to assess the data quality and the performance of a ring laser, based on characteristics of the interferometric Sagnac signal. The developed scheme is applied to ROMY data to detect compromised operation states and assign quality flags. Large-scale laser gyroscopes have found important applications in Earth sciences due to their self-sufficient property of measurement of the Earth's rotation without any external references. In order to extend the relative rotation measurement accuracy to a better level so that it can be used for the determination of the Earth orientation parameters (EOP), we investigate the limitations in a passive resonant laser gyroscope (PRG) developed at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) to pave the way for future development. We identify the noise sources from the derived noise transfer function of the PRG. In the frequency range below 10 − 2 Hz , the contribution of free-spectral-range (FSR) variation is the dominant limitation, which comes from the drift of the ring cavity length. In the 10 − 2 to 10 3 Hz frequency range, the limitation is due to the noises of the frequency discrimination system, which mainly comes from the residual amplitude modulation (RAM) in the frequency range below 2 Hz. In addition, the noise contributed by the Mach–Zehnder-type beam combiner is also noticeable in the 0.01 to 2 Hz frequency range. Finally, possible schemes for future improvement are also discussed. Over the last two decades a series of large ring laser gyroscopes have been built having an unparalleled scale factor. These upscaled devices have improved the sensitivity and stability for rotation rate measurements by six orders of magnitude when compared to previous commercial developments. This progress has made possible entirely new applications of ring laser gyroscopes in the fields of geophysics, geodesy, and seismology. Ring lasers are currently the only viable measurement technology, which is directly referenced to the instantaneous rotation axis of the Earth. The sensor technology is rapidly developing. This is evidenced by the first experimentally viable proposals to make terrestrial tests of general relativistic effects such as the frame dragging of the rotating Earth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
