This chapter investigates the ongoing process of academization within the field of educational therapy in Germany, particularly in the context of the introduction of university degrees in integrative educational therapy and the psychology of learning. The introduction of these degrees brought about transformative changes in the professional landscape. Educational therapists holding such degrees often demonstrate a more advanced understanding of their roles, which is underpinned by thorough university education and the legitimizing influence of their academic titles. Prior to the establishment of these degree programs, the field of educational therapy was notably unregulated, devoid of a protected professional title or a specific qualification. This lack of regulation resulted in a proliferation of varied providers, giving rise to what's known as the "after-school market" phenomenon. This chapter explores the genesis and institutionalization of degree programs in educational therapy as a path toward professionalizing the field. It reveals the crucial role that professional associations along with scientific experts have played in launching these degree programs. Suspense as an aesthetic effect is a key narrative strategy of thriller movies, serving the function of entertainment for wide audiences. As the plot unfolds, arcs of suspense rely on triggering an appealing sense of anticipation that calls for a resolution. The present study examines the creation of suspense throughout fictional dialogue in Quentin Tarantino's popular feature films Pulp Fiction (1994), Inglourious Basterds (2009), and Django Unchained (2012). In these movies, dialogic interaction is often dominated by eloquent villains who skilfully flout the conversational maxims of Grice's cooperative principle, thereby exercising verbal power over other interlocutors. As is demonstrated in a qualitative pragma-stylistic framework, the villains' discursive strategies amount to stylistic deviation resulting in suspenseful implicatures. In particular, suspense is commonly caused by digressing from current topics, by giving too little information or too many details, by being insincere or ironic, and by making equivocal or redundant statements. Since presidential primary debates in US election campaigns serve the function of identifying the most promising nominee for the subsequent presidency, they constitute a highly adversarial multilogue. Debaters do not only exchange factual arguments but also use diverse forms of impoliteness geared towards damaging the public image of political opponents and persuading audiences to vote accordingly. Combining political discourse analysis with pragmatic approaches to impoliteness, this paper examines the ways in which verbal aggression in debates inflicts damage on the addressee's positive and negative face. On the basis of five Democratic and five Republican debates from 2016, it is shown that impolite utterances fulfil the four central strategic functions of (a) delegitimization, (b) coercion, (c) entertainment, and (d) (self-)defence, all of which support the macro-function of political persuasion through the construction of personal preferability. Presidential primary debates in the USA are commonly concluded by brief closing statements, in which the competitors outline the central messages of their election campaigns. These statements constitute a subgenre characterized by a set of recurring rhetorical moves, which are defined as functional units geared towards the respective communicative objective, in this case political persuasion. Located at the interface of rhetorical move analysis and political discourse studies, this paper demonstrates that moves and embedded steps in closing statements fulfill the persuasive function of legitimizing the respective candidate as the most preferable presidential successor. The study is based on the transcripts of 98 closing statements, which were extracted from eight Democratic and eleven Republican primary debates held between August 2015 and April 2016. Typical moves, such as projecting the speaker's future political agenda or diagnosing the current situation in America, are presented with the help of illustrative examples, frequencies of occurrence, and a sample analysis of a complete closing statement. This article examines the discursive uses of frequent response initiators by Republican and Democratic presidential candidates in the genre of televised US primary debates. Ten full transcripts of debates held between February and April 2016 are investigated from the perspectives of political discourse studies and conversation analysis. It is shown that the response initiators well, first of all, look, you know and let me (just) speech act verb fulfill specific discursive functions in competitive media discourse. On the textual level, candidates exert power and control by negotiating turn-taking processes and managing the information flow. On the interactional level, competitors use response initiators to frame themselves as likable and competent personas, to establish common ground with voters and to enhance negative perceptions of opponents. Although neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is increasingly used in dysphagia therapy, patient responses to NMES are inconsistent and conflicting results have been reported. This, together with a lack of information about the effects of NEMS on the swallowing process, has led to an ongoing debate about its impact on swallowing function. In order to address this, we set out to (i) collect baseline information on the physiological effects of NMES on the complex pharyngeal phase of swallowing and (ii) to compare two different stimulation protocols. In doing so, we provide information useful for evaluating the therapeutic effectiveness of NMES on the swallowing process. In a prospective study, 29 healthy participants performed water swallows after receiving continuous NMES for 10 min. The stimulus was applied in the submandibular region using one of two different stimulation protocols: low-frequency stimulation (LFS) and mid-frequency stimulation (MFS). Swallowing parameters of the pharynx and UES were measured using high-resolution manometry. Maximum tongue base pressure increased by 8.4% following stimulation with the MFS protocol. Changes in UES function were not found. LFS stimulation did not result in any significant changes in the parameters examined. The MFS protocol enhances tongue base retraction during swallowing in healthy volunteers. The magnitude of the effect, however, was small, possibly due to the ability of healthy subjects to compensate for external influences, such as NMES, and may actually prove to be much greater in patients with diminished tongue base retraction. Thus, further studies are needed to determine whether a similar effect is also achievable in dysphagic patients with impaired bolus propulsion, possibly allowing MFS stimulation of the tongue base region to be used as an additional treatment tool. This paper investigates the ways in which immoral villains in contemporary fictional television are linguistically constructed as antiheroes that are appealing and even likeable to a wide mainstream audience. The underlying dataset comprises the first thirteen episodes of each of the three American TV series Breaking Bad, House of Cards, and Dexter. In order to highlight the equivocal status of the protagonists, this study adopts approaches from both cognitive semantics and register theory. The blending of mental spaces in utterances by the antiheroes underlines the fact that they oscillate between diverse social and cognitive domains. In addition, the protagonists are highly versatile in accommodating their linguistic registers to alternating situational contexts. As a result, they are framed as resourceful, multifaceted, and captivating individuals in a way that accounts for the tremendous pop-cultural impact and economic success of these TV shows. In the field of mass communication, both telecinematic discourse and political rhetoric are social practices that interdiscursively reinforce cultural categorisations. The present paper discusses the ways in which ethnic stereotypes of Mexico are constructed and perpetuated by mainstream entertainment and the campaign rhetoric of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. Adopting the perspective of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), the study examines the TV series Breaking Bad and three recent feature films as well as public debates, interviews, and campaign speeches by Trump. Just as the series and films establish violent, unpredictable and morally deficient drug dealers and cartel bosses, Trump's rhetoric metaphorically frames Mexican immigrants and their government as treacherous criminals and thieves. In order to legitimise enhanced border security, Trump chiefly employs the discursive strategies of misrepresentation, moral evaluation, and mythopoesis. The feeling that traditional textual philology has largely solved its tasks has become prevalent in classical scholarship. This contribution argues the case for recognising the ongoing necessity of textual-philological work. This necessity is demonstrated by way of discussing a textually and interpretatively difficult passage from the poet Commodian, Carmen apoLogeticum 449b In contrast to the opinion hitherto put forward that Commodian quotes freely from Psalm 109, a literal quotation from John 20,17 can be ascertained. This renders the conjecture ascende for transmitted ascendo dispensable, is consistent with the author's usual quotational practice of actually quoting literally after explicitly introducing a quotation, and, through the quotation selected, seamlessly assimilates into the author's modalistic-docetic theology. Cognitive categorization is an indispensable instrument for organizing human experience. Owing to the obvious appeal of clear-cut categories in ideological discourse, polarization frequently serves as a strategy of political persuasion. The success of such rhetoric corroborates the allure of dichotomies, although they blatantly contradict the fuzzy nature of cognitive categories. Since prototypicality yields a great cognitive effect but demands only little processing effort, prototypes are particularly convenient in political speeches, where speakers must often get their message across to a wide and heterogeneous audience in a limited time span. Along these lines, the analysis of 32 presidential speeches from Franklin D. Roosevelt to George W. Bush brings to light how the prototypical enemy or national hero is established. This paper aims to show that political rhetoric does not merely reflect existing categorizations but also has the power to shape and perpetuate them in the minds of the target audience. White House press briefings have the function of providing journalists with first-hand information on present activities of the US-American administration. The Press Secretary, currently Jay Carney, mainly draws on indirect reportative evidentialiy, referring to recent utterances by the President. However, owing to the often critical and persistent inquiries by investigative journalists based on counter-evidentiality, the Press Secretary frequently resorts to evasive manoeuvres. Moreover, he commonly refuses to use logical inferencing in his function as a mouthpiece of the government, since speculations might be potentially harmful when given to the press. Thus, the present paper investigates the possibilities and limitations of evidentiality in this interview genre from a discourse-analytical perspective on the basis of an online archive of transcripts. A close reading of a chapter of Gellius' Noctes Atticae (IV 7) on the quantity of prefixes reveals that the two prose quotations from the elder Cato, which seem to be inappropriate in a discussion that otherwise consists of nothing but poetic examples, are in fact not at all out of place, since Cato himself offered poetic material in these quotations. Through this, two fragments of Old Latin poetry can be recovered. The first ( faenoribus copertus or faenoribus copertust), the ending of a hexameter, is probably taken from a satiric context. The content of the second fragment ( ita nos fert ventus ad primorem Pyrenaeum quo proicit / in altum), an iambic octonarius, may indicate occasional poetry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper explores the structures and functions of follow-up questions in White House press briefings from the perspectives of both text linguistics and cognitive discourse analysis. On the one hand, I investigate the characteristic types of cohesion in follow-ups at the lexicogrammatical level in the terminological framework of Functional Grammar. On the other hand, the focus is on contextual framing, which results in the presentation of a biased world view. Special emphasis is put on metacommunication, since the interviewers frequently use metalinguistic prefaces to their follow-up questions (e.g. Can I follow on that?). The highly interactive and dialogic genre of press briefings, in which the press secretary acts as the mouthpiece of the administration, is closely related to the institutional talk of news interviews. Since these briefings form an integral part of US-American political culture, their transcripts are freely available in a comprehensive online archive. Hence, on this empirical basis, follow-up questions will be conceptualized as a process-oriented dialogic strategy of critical information retrieval at the micro level of conversational contributions. In this survey we discuss the generalisation of stochastic Kripke models for general modal logics through predicate liftings for functors over general measurable spaces. We derive results on expressivity and show that selection arguments allow us to incorporate the discussion of bisimilarity, provided the underlying spaces are assumed to be standard Borel. Human secretoglobin (SCGB) 2A1 (or lipophilin C, lacryglobin, mammaglobin B) is a small protein of unknown function that forms heterodimers with secretoglobin 1D1 (lipophilin A) in tears. SCGB 2A1 is homologous to mammaglobin (mammaglobin A) and the C3 component of prostatein, the major secretory protein of the rat ventral prostate. Androgen-dependent expression of SCGB 2A1 has been observed in the prostate. Besides identification of SCGB 2A1 in the tear proteome only its mRNA had been detected in the lacrimal gland. Here, we report expression of SCGB 2A1 in all ocular glands and in the keratinized stratified squamous epithelium of the eyelid as well as in the stratified epithelium of the conjunctiva and in the orbicularis oculi muscle. Almost all of these tissues are also known to express the androgen receptor. Therefore, we conclude that presence of the androgen signalling machinery could be the main general determinant of SCGB 2A1 expression. Implications of the presence in tear fluid of an androgen-regulated secretoglobin, which most likely binds hydrophobic ligands, for tear film lipid layer formation and function is discussed. Clinically and histologically, the concept of dysplastic nevi remains controversial. To elaborate more precise criteria for the nevi of patients with dysplastic naevus syndrome (DNS), we examined 58 nevi from seven DNS patients who developed one or several malignant melanomas. Clinical presentation and histomorphology were evaluated, and immunohistochemistry was performed using proliferation marker Ki-S5 and antibody DO-7 to the p53 protein. Sixty nevi from individuals without history of melanoma served as controls. Of the DNS nevi, 21 (36.2%) exhibited no morphological particularities. The remaining 37 nevi presented distinctive histological features consisting of a slight epidermal acanthosis, spitzoid vertically oriented nests of dyscohesive nevus cells, and single-standing atypical melanocytes in the basal cell layer of the epidermis. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed an average proliferation index of 2.5%, which significantly surpassed the mean growth fraction of conventional dysplastic nevi (<1%). No increase in p53 expression was observed. Characteristically, active proliferation was found in junctional single-standing melanocytes with or without nuclear atypia rather than in nest-shaped compounds. In conclusion, certain moles of patients with DNS possess distinctive features. The newly characterized criteria may provide a basis for the diagnosis of DNS and might help to identify patients at increased risk for malignant melanoma by examination of a single biopsy. Dorsal tubercle and skin of Mertensiella caucasica have been investigated with the electron microscope and enzyme histochemical methods. The epidermis of the tubercle consists of 8-9 cell layers, that of normal dorsal skin of 5-6. The tubercle is filled with large mucous glands which are surrounded by an almost complete layer of smooth muscle cells (myoepithelial cells). Their glandular cells undergo cyclical changes and are characterized by specific secretory granules, which differ from those of the relatively small mucous glands of the normal dorsal skin. In the connective tissue of the tubercle a relatively rich supply of nerve fibres has been found, which in part contain synaptic and dense core vesicles or accumulations of mitochondria. In the normal dorsal skin nerve fibres occur less frequently. The following enzymes have been demonstrated in the mucous glands of the tubercle: SDH, acid phosphatase, unspecific esterases, E 600 resistant esterase. Different developmental stages of two species of the genus Ichthyophis have been investigated. In the late embryo the follicular cells of the thyroid gland exhibit various degrees of cytodifferentiation. Well differentiated cells show a polar organization and contain numerous granular inclusions, but a colloid-containing lumen is rare. Most cells at this stage contain large lipid inclusions. In young and older larvae the cells contain well-developed rough ER and Golgi systems, numerous mitochondria, and abundant granular and vesicular inclusions. Tentative identifications were made of primary lysosomes, secondary lysosomes, residual bodies, and two types of small apical vesicles-containing resorbed colloid or transporting material into the follicular lumen. In the larvae the number of apical microvilli is relatively high. The thyroid cells of the older larvae seem to contain more granular and vesicular inclusions than those of the younger larvae. In the adult the size of the follicles greatly increases, the height of the epithelium decreases, microvilli become rare, residual bodies are more frequent, and the small primary lysosomes are replaced by larger ones. Colloid droplets have been found only rarely in the cytoplasm of the thyroid cells of adult animals. In the immediate neighbourhood of the follicular epithelium, profiles of nerve fibres were found in all animals. Radioiodide investigations-measurements of conversion ratio and thyroid uptake factor-show, if compared with the results of corresponding studies in other amphibians, only relatively small differences between the larvae on the one hand and larvae and adults on the other. The absolute counts of the thyroid region are lowest in the adult and highest in the older larvae, shortly before metamorphosis. Furthermore our results indicate, on the basis of four animals tested, that in Ichthyophis the activity of the thyroid gland is temperature dependent. The results in Ichthyophis show that the classical stages of metamorphosis, in other amphibians characterized among other things by different levels of thyroid activity, are very indistinct in this animal. The pituitary glands of two urodelan species ( Mertensiella caucasica, Triturus cristatus) and one caecilian species ( Chthonerpeton indistinetum) were examined with histological (Alcian blue, Brookes' trichrome stain), enzyme histochemical (acid phosphatase, α-naphthylacetate-esterase, acetylcholinesterase) and immunofluorescence techniques (anti-carp GTH, anti-ovine prolactin, anti-synthetic α-MSH). In the pituitary gland of Mertensiella and Triturus six chromophilic cell types could be distinguished. A strong fluorescence was observed in the MSH-, GTH- and TSH-cells. In the pituitary gland of Chthonerpeton only five chromophilic cell types could be distinguished: in the rostral part of the pituitary gland the B-cell; in the basal region of the central area the B-cell; dorsocaudally the B-cell. The acidophilic cells were found in the central and caudal part of the pars distalis. The basophils of the pars intermedia could be observed in the dorsocaudal part of the pituitary gland surrounding the neurohypophysis. In the diencephalon of two species of Gymnophiona (Amphibia) two neurosecretory nuclei were examined with histological (Alcian Blue, Aldehyde Fuchsin, Brookes Trichrome stain) and enzyme histochemical techniques (acid phosphatase, α-naphthyl acetate esterase, acetylcholinesterase (AChE)). In the preoptic nucleus two categories of secretory neurons were distinguished: large and medium sized neurons. The perikarya of both cell types contain very little neurosecretory material. The Alcian Blue method stained the medium sized neurons faintly but selectively. The tractus praeopticohypophyseus is marked by the presence of Herring bodies, which, however, are relatively scarce. The neurohypophysis, in contrast, contains large amounts of neurosecretory material. Both cell types of the preoptic nucleus are characterized by their very strong AChE and α-naphthylacetate esterase activity. The AChE also marks the tractus praeoptico-hypophyseus. In the large neurons acid phosphatase is present around the nucleus; in the medium sized neurons this enzyme is concentrated close to the origin of the axon. In the dorso-caudal hypothalamus a small group of neurons is stained with Alcian-Blue. These neurons, which also contain AChE, are located immediately under the ependyma which seems to be specialized in this region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
