This article provides an overview of the regulation of artificial intelligence (AI) in the workplace, with a specific focus on the United States. It explores the challenges policymakers face in promoting the benefits of AI while addressing potential harm and ensuring worker access. Concerns highlighted include the impact on workers' well-being, bias and discrimination, lack of transparency and data privacy, and job displacement. The Biden administration calls for clear governance systems, worker input in AI design and oversight, and protection of workers' rights. The article also examines how other countries approach workplace AI regulation. At the federal level, the US government aims to promote AI development while ensuring trustworthiness and equity, but faces limitations in including workers in decision-making processes. States and cities focus more on individual harms but struggle with capacity limitations and promoting collective rights. Unions can offer policy initiatives to complement traditional mechanisms. Purpose: To inves)gate the effect of irradia)on)me and zirconia thickness using low power Er,Cr:YSGG laser irradia)on (for debonding purposes) on the thermal changes and shear bond strength (SBS) of resin-bonded 3% mol yIrium oxide stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3YTZP) specimens. Materials and Methods: 3Y-TZP slices of 0.5-, 2-, and 3-mm thick were used. The temperatures during laser irradia)on using single spot irradia)on at different)mes (30 seconds, 60 seconds, 90 seconds, and 120 seconds) and line scanning irradia)on from one spot to another at three different distances (2, 4, and 6 mm) were recorded. Single spot and line scanning irradia)on data were analyzed using three-way ANOVA (a = .05) and generalized linear mixed model, respec)vely. Nonirradiated (control) and irradiated resin-bonded 3Y-TZP specimens were shear tested, and the data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA (a = .05). Results: Under single spot irradia)on, the laser-induced temperature was higher through thin 3Y-TZP at any)me compared to thick 3Y-TZP. For the line scanning method, short distances (2 and 4 mm) resulted in a significant increase in temperature for 0.5-mm thick specimens. Laser irradia)on significantly decreased the SBS of the 0.5-mm group compared to the nonirradiated group. A_er irradia)on, the bond strength of the 2- and 3-mm thick 3Y-TZP was similar to the nonirradiated group. Conclusions: The temperature and bond strength of low-power laser irradiated 3Y-TZP specimens was affected by the specimen thickness but not by the irradia)on)me tested. The best known solutions for k-message broadcast in dynamic networks of size n require Ω (nk) rounds. In this article, we see if these bounds can be improved by smoothed analysis. To do so, we study perhaps the most natural randomized algorithm for disseminating tokens in this setting: at every timestep, choose a token to broadcast randomly from the set of tokens you know. We show that with even a small amount of smoothing (i.e., one random edge added per round), this natural strategy solves k-message broadcast in \(\tilde{O}(n+k^3)\) rounds, with high probability, beating the best known bounds for \(k=o(\sqrt {n})\) and matching the Ω (n+k) lower bound for static networks for k=O(n1/3) (ignoring logarithmic factors). In fact, the main result we show is even stronger and more general: Given ℓ-smoothing (i.e., ℓ random edges added per round), this simple strategy terminates in \(O(kn^{2/3}\log ^{1/3}(n)\ell ^{-1/3})\) rounds. We then prove this analysis close to tight with an almost-matching lower bound. To better understand the impact of smoothing on information spreading, we next turn our attention to static networks, proving a tight bound of \(\tilde{O}(k\sqrt {n})\) rounds to solve k-message broadcast, which is better than what our strategy can achieve in the dynamic setting. This confirms the intuition that although smoothed analysis reduces the difficulties induced by changing graph structures, it does not eliminate them altogether. Finally, we apply tools developed to support our smoothed analysis to prove an optimal result for k-message broadcast in so-called well-mixed networks in the absence of smoothing. By comparing this result to an existing lower bound for well-mixed networks, we establish a formal separation between oblivious and strongly adaptive adversaries with respect to well-mixed token spreading, partially resolving an open question on the impact of adversary strength on the k-message broadcast problem. Since the mid-1980s it has been known that Byzantine Agreement can be solved with probability 1 asynchronously, even against an omniscient, computationally unbounded adversary that can adaptively corrupt up to f < n/3 parties. Moreover, the problem is insoluble with f ≥ n/3 corruptions. However, Bracha's [13] 1984 protocol (see also Ben-Or [8]) achieved f < n/3 resilience at the cost of exponential expected latency 2Θ (n), a bound that has never been improved in this model with f = ⌊ (n-1)/3 ⌋ corruptions. In this article, we prove that Byzantine Agreement in the asynchronous, full information model can be solved with probability 1 against an adaptive adversary that can corrupt f < n/3 parties, while incurring only polynomial latency with high probability. Our protocol follows an earlier polynomial latency protocol of King and Saia [33, 34], which had suboptimal resilience, namely f ≈ n/109 [33, 34]. Resilience f = (n-1)/3 is uniquely difficult, as this is the point at which the influence of the Byzantine and honest players are of roughly equal strength. The core technical problem we solve is to design a collective coin-flipping protocol that eventually lets us flip a coin with an unambiguous outcome. In the beginning, the influence of the Byzantine players is too powerful to overcome, and they can essentially fix the coin's behavior at will. We guarantee that after just a polynomial number of executions of the coin-flipping protocol, either (a) the Byzantine players fail to fix the behavior of the coin (thereby ending the game) or (b) we can "blacklist" players such that the blacklisting rate for Byzantine players is at least as large as the blacklisting rate for good players. The electronic structures of three highly mismatched alloys (HMAs)—GeC(Sn), Ga(In)NAs, and BGa(In)As—were studied using density functional theory with HSE06 hybrid functionals, with an emphasis on the local environment near the mismatched, highly electronegative atom (B, C, and N). These alloys are known for their counterintuitive reduction in the bandgap when adding the smaller atom, due to a band anticrossing (BAC) or splitting of the conduction band. Surprisingly, the existence of band splitting was found to be completely unrelated to the local displacement of the lattice ions near the mismatched atom. Furthermore, in BGaAs, the reduction in the bandgap due to BAC was weaker than the increase due to the lattice constant, which has not been observed among other HMAs but may explain differences among experimental reports. While local distortion in GeC and GaNAs was not the cause for BAC, it was found to enhance the bandgap reduction due to BAC. This work also found that mere contrast in electronegativity between neighboring atoms does not induce BAC. In fact, surrounding the electronegative atom with elements of even smaller electronegativity than the host (e.g., Sn or In) consistently decreased or even eliminated BAC. For a fixed composition, moving Sn toward C and In toward either N or B was always energetically favorable and increased the bandgap, consistent with experimental annealing results. Such rearrangement also delocalized the conduction band wavefunctions near the mismatched atom to resemble the original host states in unperturbed Ge or GaAs, causing the BAC to progressively weaken. These collective results were consistent whether the mismatched atom was a cation (N), anion (B), or fully covalent (C), varying only with the magnitude of its electronegativity, with B having the least effect. The effects can be explained by charge screening of the mismatched atom's deep electrostatic potential. Together, these results help explain differences in the bandgap and other properties reported for HMAs from different groups and provide insight into the creation of materials with designer properties. The high-entropy alloy with composition AlCoCrFeNi2.1, additively manufactured with the laser powder-bed fusion technique, has a far-from-equilibrium BCC/FCC eutectic nanolamellar structure. We studied the high-pressure response of this alloy under both static compression and high-strain rate shock compression. The response to static compression using a diamond anvil cell was studied at pressures up to 302 GPa with synchrotron x-ray diffraction at the advanced photon source. The high-pressure FCC-only phase of the EHEA previously observed by Pope et al. [AIP Adv. 13, 035124 (2023)] is found to be stable up to the highest pressure achieved in this study with a volume compression of V/V0 = 0.587 at ambient temperature. The shock experiments were performed by using GEKKO XII lasers at the Institute of Laser Engineering, Osaka University. The principal Hugoniot equation-of-state of the EHEA was measured up to a pressure of 515 GPa and a compression of V/V0 = 0.613. Additionally, the thermal equation of state of the EHEA was measured up to 6.2 GPa and 1623 K using a large-volume Paris–Edinburgh cell to obtain the temperature dependence of bulk modulus and thermal expansion coefficients. The melting temperature for EHEA AlCoCrFeNi2.1 at a pressure of 5.6 GPa was measured to be 1648 ± 25 K. This theoretical article and applied case study examines the concept of academic research libraries adopting concepts that emphasize building the future rather than passively reacting through incrementalism and risk aversion which is standard practice. These include Peter Thiel's "Zero to One" theory, Power Law concepts, and Nassim Taleb's Black Swan theory, with the application of Lean Kaizen toward foundational existing systems. These concepts, taken together, catalyze the preparation for inevitable disruptive change. With them, there exists an opportunity to reduce the current climate of risk aversion and persistent incrementalism, stagnated growth, ineffectual leadership, and decreased morale and talent retention currently present within the industry. In a time where all industries are facing constant disruption that continues to compound, libraries and other cultural heritage institutions must take the initiative to challenge and change internally by building our future before we are disrupted by other more undesirable forces. In shifting away from incrementalism and risk-aversion, and focusing on building the future through calculated risks, constant experimentation, groundbreaking ideation, operational excellence, and strategies, libraries can redefine their roles, ensure relevance, and achieve long-term success in an ever-evolving ecosystem. This article introduces a 13-point comprehensive framework that integrates the preceding applicable theories that emphasize local innovation, agility, operational excellence, and a focus on embracing the Power Law, which contends that positive outcomes in every system are heavily skewed, and to win big we need to embrace these outliers and take balanced and calculated risks to succeed in an unknown future. We report simulation studies of 33 single intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) using coarse-grained bead-spring models where interactions among different amino acids are introduced through a hydropathy matrix and additional screened Coulomb interaction for the charged amino acid beads. Our simulation studies of two different hydropathy scales (HPS1, HPS2) [Dignon et al., PLoS Comput. Biol. 14, e1005941 (2018); Tesei et al. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. 118, e2111696118 (2021)] and the comparison with the existing experimental data indicate an optimal interaction parameter ϵ = 0.1 and 0.2 kcal/mol for the HPS1 and HPS2 hydropathy scales. We use these best-fit parameters to investigate both the universal aspects as well as the fine structures of the individual IDPs by introducing additional characteristics. (i) First, we investigate the polymer-specific scaling relations of the IDPs in comparison to the universal scaling relations [Bair et al., J. Chem. Phys. 158, 204902 (2023)] for the homopolymers. By studying the scaled end-to-end distances ⟨ R N 2 ⟩ / (2 L ℓ p ) and the scaled transverse fluctuations l ̃ ⊥ 2 = ⟨ l ⊥ 2 ⟩ / L , we demonstrate that IDPs are broadly characterized with a Flory exponent of ν ≃ 0.56 with the conclusion that conformations of the IDPs interpolate between Gaussian and self-avoiding random walk chains. Then, we introduce (ii) Wilson charge index (W) that captures the essential features of charge interactions and distribution in the sequence space and (iii) a skewness index (S) that captures the finer shape variation of the gyration radii distributions as a function of the net charge per residue and charge asymmetry parameter. Finally, our study of the (iv) variation of ⟨Rg⟩ as a function of salt concentration provides another important metric to bring out finer characteristics of the IDPs, which may carry relevant information for the origin of life. GeSnC alloys offer a route to direct bandgap semiconductors for CMOS-compatible lasers, but the use of CBr4 as a carbon source was shown to reduce Sn incorporation by 83%–92%. We report on the role of thermally cracked H in increasing Sn incorporation by 6x–9.5x, restoring up to 71% of the lost Sn, and attribute this increase to removal of Br from the growth surface as HBr prior to formation of volatile groups such as SnBr4. Furthermore, as the H flux is increased, Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy reveals a monotonic increase in both Sn and carbon incorporation. X-ray diffraction reveals tensile-strained films that are pseudomorphic with the substrate. Raman spectroscopy suggests substitutional C incorporation; both x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman suggest a lack of graphitic carbon or its other phases. For the lowest growth temperatures, scanning transmission electron microscopy reveals nanovoids that may account for the low Sn substitutional fraction in those layers. Conversely, the sample grown at high temperatures displayed abrupt interfaces, notably devoid of any voids, tin, or carbon-rich clusters. Finally, the surface roughness decreases with increasing growth temperature. These results show that atomic hydrogen provides a highly promising route to increase both Sn and C to achieve a strongly direct bandgap for optical gain and active silicon photonics. Direct bandgap group IV materials could provide intimate integration of lasers, amplifiers, and compact modulators within complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor for smaller, active silicon photonics. Dilute germanium carbides (GeC) with ∼1 at. % C offer a direct bandgap and strong optical emission, but energetic carbon sources such as plasmas and e-beam evaporation produce defective materials. In this work, we used CBr4 as a low-damage source of carbon in molecular beam epitaxy of tin-free GeC, with smooth surfaces and narrow x-ray diffraction peaks. Raman spectroscopy showed substitutional incorporation of C and no detectable sp2 bonding from amorphous or graphitic carbon, even without surfactants. Assessing glomerular filtration rate (GFR) involves collecting timed urine samples for 24 hours, requiring significant time and resources in the clinical setting. Using predictive GFR formulae to assess renal function may be a better alternative. Our goal was to determine which predictive GFR formula had the highest level of concordance with the GFR that has been measured in a resource‐poor setting. This is an observational study. We selected fifty (50) individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) in Kumasi, Ghana. The sociodemographic and clinical characteristics were obtained using a structured questionnaire. Urine was obtained from each subject over 24 hours. The levels of glucose (FBG) and creatinine in patients' blood, as well as the levels of creatinine in their urine, were measured after the patients had fasted overnight. Participants had a mean age of 57.4 ± 10.7 (years), BMI of 27.8 ± 4.1 (kg/m2), FBG of 9.0 ± 3.1 (mmol/L), and creatinine concentrations of 95.6 ± 29.1 (μmol/L). A Krouwer plot was used to compare the measured GFR with three formulae: Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology (CKD‐EPI), Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD), and Cockroft‐Gault (CG) for GFR prediction. Among the 3 estimates, CG showed nonsignificance (p > 0.05) with the measured GFR. The primary finding was that the GFR calculated using the CG formula was not different from the GFR measured, suggesting that CG is the most appropriate alternative GFR estimate among a cross‐section of T2DM patients in Ghana. Operation of radio-genetic 'Inherited sterility technique' (IS), proposed for suppression of a serious tropical pest, Spodoptera litura (Fabr.) requires reproductively competitive moths as a prerequisite. Insects harbor microbes, which might be associated with their reproductive viability. The present study was attempted to assess the gut bacterial diversity of the F1 sixth instar (L6) progeny derived from irradiated (100Gy, 130Gy), sub-sterilized male parent moths in comparison with control, using Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) analysis of 16 S rRNA of the bacterial community of larval gut. Irradiated S.litura showed an increased bacterial load than control. Irradiation could stimulate the abundance of some groups of bacteria in the gut, whereas overall species richness and evenness were affected by irradiation. Phylum Firmicutes was the most abundant phylum in the irradiated larvae (both in the 100Gy F1L6 and 130Gy F1L6); whereas in control larval gut, the Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Chlorofexi, and Cyanobacteria were found to be abundant as compared to the irradiated regimens. Lactobacillus, Bacillus, Paenibacillus, the genera belonging to the phylum Firmicutes were relatively more abundant in the irradiated larvae (100Gy F1L6 and 130Gy F1L6), whereas genera Pseudomonas, Neisseria, and Stenotrophomonas belonging to the phylum Proteobacteria were more abundant in control. The functional pathways involved in the oxidation and reduction of sulfate and nitrate were found to be enriched in the control larval gut whereas the streptomycin production, chloramphenicol degradation pathways were enriched in the irradiated larval gut. Polysilazane (PSZ) polymers offer the ability to form silicon carbide (SiC) or silicon nitride (Si3N4) via thermal pyrolysis. The majority of studies surrounding this polymer have focused on the decomposition of PSZ to amorphous glass. Investigations into the structural defects and bonding environments of the final ceramic systems are not as frequently discussed. Examining structural defects/abnormalities can help better use PSZ‐derived ceramics in electronic and high‐temperature applications, where phase identity and microstructure are important. In this work, three PSZ‐derived polymers were synthesized with different C/N ratios (1.33, 1.0, and 1.2) via the ammonolysis condensation reaction with chlorinated silanes. The samples were named PSZ‐SiCF1‐3. Samples were then pyrolyzed under Ar in a tube furnace at 1600°C for 5 h. Characterization included X‐ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, and electron energy loss spectroscopy. XRD measurements uncovered arbitrary stacking fault (SF) measurements of 3C‐SiC to be 4.12, 1.08, and 2.12 (unitless) for samples PSZ‐SiCF1‐3. Results were supported through Raman spectroscopy and TEM. High carbon content, not higher residual nitrogen content, was more impactful for SF formation. A key issue in the development of theory and models for plasma propulsion devices is to describe the instabilities and fluctuations of the devices. It has been widely recognized that many Hall effect thrusters (HETs) exhibit oscillations at frequencies in the range of ∼ 20 kHz. These ionization-related oscillations are generally referred to as Breathing Mode oscillations and have been the subject of considerable research. Here, for the first time, we report direct temporally resolved measurements of the ground state neutral density variation during the period of the oscillation. We used the laser-based Two-Photon Absorption Laser Induced Fluorescence (TALIF) technique to measure neutrals within the plume of a 1.5 kW HET operating on krypton (Kr). Our TALIF scheme employs a frequency-doubled, pulsed dye laser operating at ∼ 212 nm to probe ground state Kr atoms. A novel phase-binning approach is used to recover the time-dependent signal by assigning the timing of each collected TALIF signal (laser shot) relative to the phase of the discharge current. We find that the neutral density fluctuates quite strongly over the period of the oscillation, and that this fluctuation leads the current fluctuation as expected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Utilizing teacher socialization in physical education theory, the aim of this study was to develop a survey to measure physical education teachers' socialization experiences and comprehensive school physical activity program involvement. Method: Instrument development included a review of existing comprehensive school physical activity program and socialization instruments, Delphi method to evaluate face and content validity through expert feedback, and a pilot test to examine the instrument's psychometric properties. Results: Upon completion of expert feedback, three items were removed, four items were revised, and open-ended questions were added to each survey construct. The pilot test yielded 28 completed surveys (40% response rate). Bayesian exploratory factor analytic procedures showed that items had statistically significant loadings and were quality measures of the corresponding constructs. Survey subscales had acceptable and high internal consistency coefficients. Discussion/Conclusion: Results suggest that this instrument is a trustworthy tool for continued research examining physical education teachers' socialization and comprehensive school physical activity program involvement. A new bidentate bridging ligand, bis(2-pyridyl)thieno[3,4-b]pyrazine is reported, along with its mono- and bi-metallic Ru(II) complexes as representative examples. Spectroscopic, electrochemical and X-ray crystallographic characterization of these species is reported, with the separation of the two Ru(III)/Ru(II) couples of the bimetallic complex suggesting better metal–metal communication than classical polypyridyl analogues. The intricate network of protein-chaperone interactions is crucial for maintaining cellular function. Recent discoveries have unveiled the existence of specialized chaperone assemblies, known as epichaperomes, which serve as scaffolding platforms that orchestrate the reconfiguration of protein-protein interaction networks, thereby enhancing cellular adaptability and proliferation. This study explores the structural and regulatory aspects of epichaperomes, with a particular focus on the role of post-translational modifications (PTMs) in their formation and function. A key finding is the identification of specific PTMs on HSP90, particularly at residues Ser226 and Ser255 within an intrinsically disordered region, as critical determinants of epichaperome assembly. Our data demonstrate that phosphorylation of these serine residues enhances HSP90’s interactions with other chaperones and co-chaperones, creating a microenvironment conducive to epichaperome formation. Moreover, we establish a direct link between epichaperome function and cellular physiology, particularly in contexts where robust proliferation and adaptive behavior are essential, such as in cancer and pluripotent stem cell maintenance. These findings not only provide mechanistic insights but also hold promise for the development of novel therapeutic strategies targeting chaperone assemblies in diseases characterized by epichaperome dysregulation, thereby bridging the gap between fundamental research and precision medicine.Epichaperomes are chaperone assemblies that reorganize protein networks under stress. Background: The absence of guidelines for the nursing management of individuals living with epilepsy, who are students in Ghana, has resulted in the high dropout rates of such students. It is our hope, that in the near future, these individuals living with epilepsy will receive the needed attention, experience less stigmatization and discrimination. This, we expect, will result in better retention of such students in schools, improved academic performance and successful graduation. To achieve this, there is the need to develop appropriate guidelines and implement same for their benefit. In line with this, the study aims to develop guidelines for nurses to manage individuals living with epilepsy in Ghanaian schools. Methodology: Qualitative approach will be adopted to conduct this study in two phases. In the first phase, a case study design will be deployed in the Twifo Atti-Morkwa District of the Central Region of Ghana. The case is the nursing management of individuals living with epilepsy within the school context, and the sources of information will be the general nurses, psychiatric, or community psychiatric nurses working at the schools. Within the context of the case, parents or guardians of individuals living with epilepsy in the schools as well as their teachers will be included in the study. Data will be collected through individual interviews for nurses and parents while focus group discussions will be used for the teachers. Thematic analysis will be used to analyze the data. In the second phase, guidelines will be developed using the modified e-Delphi Technique. The study will be piloted in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem Municipality of the Central Region of Ghana. Ethics approval for this study has been obtained from the Ethical Review Committee of the University of Pretoria in South Africa. Additionally, Administrative approvals have been obtained from the Ghana Education Service. Discussion: The guidelines developed will form the basis for nursing management of individuals living with epilepsy in Ghanaian schools. From a game of darts to neurorehabilitation, the ability to explore and fine tune our movements is critical for success. Past work has shown that exploratory motor behaviour in response to reinforcement (reward) feedback is closely linked with the basal ganglia, while movement corrections in response to error feedback is commonly attributed to the cerebellum. While our past work has shown these processes are dissociable during adaptation, it is unknown how they uniquely impact exploratory behaviour. Moreover, converging neuroanatomical evidence shows direct and indirect connections between the basal ganglia and cerebellum, suggesting that there is an interaction between reinforcement-based and error-based neural processes. Here we examine the unique roles and interaction between reinforcement-based and error-based processes on sensorimotor exploration in a neurotypical population. We also recruited individuals with Parkinson's disease to gain mechanistic insight into the role of the basal ganglia and associated reinforcement pathways in sensorimotor exploration. Across three reaching experiments, participants were given either reinforcement feedback, error feedback, or simultaneously both reinforcement & error feedback during a sensorimotor task that encouraged exploration. Our reaching results, a re-analysis of a previous gait experiment, and our model suggests that in isolation, reinforcement-based and error-based processes respectively boost and suppress exploration. When acting in concert, we found that reinforcement-based and error-based processes interact by mutually opposing one another. Finally, we found that those with Parkinson's disease had decreased exploration when receiving reinforcement feedback, supporting the notion that compromised reinforcement-based processes reduces the ability to explore new motor actions. Understanding the unique and interacting roles of reinforcement-based and error-based processes may help to inform neurorehabilitation paradigms where it is important to discover new and successful motor actions. Increasing cyclic GMP activates 26S proteasomes via phosphorylation by Protein Kinase G and stimulates the intracellular degradation of misfolded proteins. Therefore, agents that raise cGMP may be useful therapeutics against neurodegenerative diseases and other diseases in which protein degradation is reduced and misfolded proteins accumulate, including Charcot Marie Tooth 1A and 1B peripheral neuropathies, for which there are no treatments. Here we increased cGMP in the S63del mouse model of CMT1B by treating for three weeks with either the phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitor tadalafil, or the brain-penetrant soluble guanylyl cyclase stimulator CYR119. Both molecules activated proteasomes in the affected peripheral nerves, reduced polyubiquitinated proteins, and improved myelin thickness and nerve conduction. CYR119 increased cGMP more than tadalafil in the peripheral nerves of S63del mice and elicited greater biochemical and functional improvements. To determine whether raising cGMP could be beneficial in other neuropathies, we first showed that polyubiquitinated proteins and the disease-causing protein accumulate in the sciatic nerves of the C3 mouse model of CMT1A. Treatment of these mice with CYR119 reduced the levels of polyubiquitinated proteins and the disease-causing protein, presumably by increasing their degradation, and improved myelination, nerve conduction, and motor coordination. Rationale: The precision of the doubly labeled water (DLW) method is determined by the precision and accuracy of the isotopic measurements. Quality control (QC) procedures to mitigate sample variability require additional measurements if sample duplicates differ more than a factor of instrument precision. We explored the effect of widening QC ranges on total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) determined using the two‐point sampling method. Methods: We screened DLW data from 121 individuals for instances where samples were analyzed more than twice using our existing QC criteria (±2.0 per mil [δ] for 2H and ±0.5 δ for 18O). We then applied wider QC ranges for accepting duplicate measures and recalculated TDEE. Results: Widening the 2H QC range to ±10.0 δ in samples collected on the first day (most enriched) and to ±5.0 δ in samples collected on the final day (less enriched) produced almost identical mean TDEE compared to the originally calculated TDEE (2684 ± 508 vs. 2687 ± 512 kcal/day, p = 0.40). There was a strong correlation with the originally calculated TDEE (r2 = 0.97, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Expanding the 2H QC range to ±10.0 δ for samples collected on the first day and ±5.0 δ for samples collected on the final day provides similar mean TDEE results. The mental health impacts of climate change are increasingly documented; however, less research has investigated the relationship between climate change-related psychological distress and engagement with the issue. The results from two national probability samples of U.S. adults show that 16% report at least one feature of climate change psychological distress and that certain groups have higher levels of distress than others (e.g., Hispanic/Latinos, lower income adults, younger adults). Importantly, people experiencing distress are more likely to engage in collective action on climate change or express a willingness to do so, even when controlling for several correlates of environmental behavior (e.g., political ideology, collective efficacy beliefs). These findings highlight that many Americans are experiencing psychological distress from climate change, and those who do are more involved in collective climate action. Cadmium is commonly recognized as toxic to plant growth, low-level Cd has promoting effects on growth performance, which is so-called hormesis. Although Cd toxicity in wheat has been widely investigated, knowledge of growth response to a broad range of Cd concentrations, especially extremely low concentrations, is still unknown. In this study, the morphological, physiological, and biochemical performance of wheat seedlings to a wide range of Cd concentrations (0–100 µΜ) were explored. Low Cd treatment (0.1–0.5 µM) improved wheat biomass and root development by enhancing the photosynthetic system and antioxidant system ability. Photosynthetic rate (Pn) was improved by 5.72% under lower Cd treatment (1 µΜ), but inhibited by 6.05–49.85% from 5 to 100 µΜ. Excessive Cd accumulation induced oxidative injury manifesting higher MDA content, resulting in lower photosynthetic efficiency, stunted growth, and reduction of biomass. Further, the contents of ascorbate, glutathione, non-protein thiols, and phytochelatins were improved under 5–100 µΜ Cd treatment. The ascorbate peroxidase activity in the leaf showed a hormetic dose–response characteristic. Correlation analysis and partial least squares (PLS) results indicated that antioxidant enzymes and metabolites were closely correlated with Cd tolerance and accumulation. The results of the element network, correlation analysis, and PLS showed a crucial role for exogenous Cd levels in K, Fe, Cu, and Mn uptake and accumulation. Background: Long term oxygen therapy (LTOT) is prescribed for hypoxemia in pulmonary disease. Like other medical therapies, LTOT requires a prescription documenting the dosage (flow rate) and directions (at rest, with activity) which goes to a supplier. Communication with patients regarding oxygen prescription (flow rate, frequency, directions), monitoring (pulse oximetry) and dosage adjustment (oxygen titration) differs in comparison with medication prescriptions. We examined the communication of oxygen management plans in the electronic health record (EHR), and their consistency with patient-reported LTOT use. Study design and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 71 adults with chronic lung disease on LTOT. Physician communication regarding oxygen management was obtained from the EHR. Participants were interviewed on their LTOT management plan. The information from each source was compared. Results: The study population was, on average, 64 years, two-thirds women, and most used oxygen for over 3 years. Only 45% of both at-rest and with-activity oxygen prescriptions were documented in the Electronic Health Record (EHR). Less than 20% of prescriptions were relayed to the patient in the after-visit summary. Of those with EHR-documented oxygen prescriptions, 44% of patients adhered to prescribed oxygen flow rates. Nearly all patients used a pulse oximeter (96%). Interpretation: We identified significant gaps in communication of oxygen management plans from provider to patient. Even when the oxygen prescription was clearly documented, there were differences in patient-reported oxygen management. Critical gaps in oxygen therapy result from the lack of consistent documentation of oxygen prescriptions in the EHR and patient-facing documents. Background: Understanding the level of exposure to Lassa virus (LASV) in at-risk communities allows for the administration of effective preventive interventions to mitigate epidemics of Lassa fever. We assessed the seroprevalence of LASV antibodies in rural and semiurban communities of two cosmopolitan cities in Nigeria with poorly understood Lassa epidemiology. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in ten communities located in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Abuja, and Ikorodu Local Government Area (LGA), Lagos, from February 2nd to July 5th, 2022. Serum samples collected from participants were analyzed for IgG and IgM antibodies using a ReLASV® Pan-Lassa NP IgG/IgM enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit. A questionnaire administered to participants collected self-reported sociodemographic and LASV exposure information. Seroprevalence of LASV IgG/IgM was estimated overall, and by study site. Univariate and multivariate log-binomial models estimated unadjusted and adjusted prevalence ratios (aPRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for site-specific risk factors for LASV seropositivity. Grouped Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) was used for variable selection for multivariate analysis. Results: A total of 628 participants with serum samples were included in the study. Most participants were female (434, 69%), married (459, 73%), and had a median age of 38 years (interquartile range 28–50). The overall seroprevalence was 27% (171/628), with a prevalence of 33% (126/376) in Abuja and 18% (45/252) in Lagos. Based on site-specific grouped LASSO selection, enrollment in the dry season (vs. wet; aPR, 95% CI: 1.73, 1.33–2.24), reported inconsistent washing of fruits and vegetables (aPR, 95% CI: 1.45, 1.10–1.92), and a positive malaria rapid test (aPR, 95% CI: 1.48, 1.09-2.00) were independently associated with LASV seropositivity in Abuja, whereas, only a self-reported history of rhinorrhea (PR, 95% CI: 2.21, 1.31–3.72) was independently associated with Lassa seropositivity in Lagos. Conclusions: The LASV seroprevalence was comparable to that in other areas in Nigeria. Our findings corroborate those from other studies on the importance of limiting human exposure to rodents and focusing on behavioral factors such as poor hygiene practices to reduce exposure to LASV. Herein, we report the fabrication of biomass rice husk‐derived chemically activated carbon (RCAC) sheets which are self‐assembled to 2D hollow porous materials and demonstrated their catalytic efficiency in the domino Knoevenagel−Michael addition reaction for the synthesis of various bio‐active coumarin derivatives in excellent yields under metal‐free conditions mild reaction conditions. Particularly, we have illustrated a facile, eco‐friendly, economical, and sustainable method for the synthesis of bis‐(4‐hydroxycoumarin)methanes, bis‐dimedones, and 4‐hydroxy‐3‐thiomethylcoumarins, via three‐component reactions of 4‐hydroxy coumarin/demedone, aldehydes and or thiophenols. Moreover, the Michael addition of 4‐hydroxy coumarin and chalcone derivatives leading to the synthesis of warfarin derivatives has also been demonstrated using RCAC as a catalyst. The cytotoxicity potential has been performed against human liver cancer cell line Hep‐G2 cancer cells for all the synthesized products by 3‐(4,5‐dimethylthiazol‐2‐yl)‐2,5‐diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) method. The cytotoxicity study against Hep‐G2 results indicates that all compounds are capable of killing the liver cancer cell line. Organizational researchers are now making widespread use of ecological momentary assessments but have not yet taken the logical next step to ecological momentary interventions, also called Just-in-Time Adaptive Interventions (JITAIs). JITAIs have the potential to test within-person causal theories and maximize practical benefits to participants through two developmental phases: The microrandomized trial and the randomized controlled trial, respectively. In the microrandomized trial design, within-person randomization and experimental manipulation maximize internal validity at the within-person level. In the randomized controlled trial design, interventions are delivered in a timely and ecological manner while avoiding unnecessary and ill-timed interventions that potentially increase participant fatigue and noncompliance. Despite these potential advantages, the development and implementation of JITAIs require consideration of many conceptual and methodological factors. Given the benefits of JITAIs, but also the various considerations involved in using them, this review introduces organizational behavior and human resources researchers to JITAIs, provides guidelines for JITAI design, development, and evaluation, and describes the extensive potential of JITAIs in organizational behavior and human resources research. The clover seed weevil, Tychius picirostris Fabricius (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is a major pest in Oregon white clover seed crops. Reliance on synthetic pyrethroid insecticides and limited availability of diverse modes of action (MoAs) has increased insecticide resistance selection in regional T. picirostris populations, emphasizing the need to evaluate novel chemistries and rotational strategies for effective insecticide resistance management (IRM). The efficacy of 8 foliar insecticide formulations for managing T. picirostris adult and larval life stages was determined in small and large-plot field trials across 2 crop years. In both years, bifenthrin (Brigade 2EC), the grower's standard, showed negligible adult and larval suppression. Insecticide formulations with isocycloseram and cyantraniliprole active ingredients reduced adult and larval populations when applied at BBCH 59–60 (prebloom) and BBCH 65–66 (full bloom) growth stages, respectively. While differences in T. picirostris abundance were observed among insecticide treatments, seed yield differences were not detected in large-plot trials. Larval abundance was correlated with reduced seed yield, and an economic threshold of ≥3 larvae per 30 inflorescences was determined as a conservative larval threshold to justify foliar applications of diamide insecticides. Additional commercial white clover seed fields were surveyed to compare larval scouting techniques, including a standard Berlese funnel and a grower's do-it-yourself funnel. Both larval extraction techniques were correlated and provided similar estimates of larval abundance. These findings demonstrate new MoAs, optimal insecticide application timing, and larval monitoring methods that can be incorporated into an effective T. picirostris IRM program in white clover seed crops. Ion chromatography is the anion analysis benchmark. A miniature form, Open Tubular Ion Chromatography (OTIC), has attractive attributes for efficient ion separations. Here, we fabricate and characterize high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) open tubular anion exchange columns (OTCs). We attach positively charged latex particles onto negatively charged capillary surfaces. For efficient OTIC, column diameters need to be < ∼20 µm; functionalizing the bore is challenging. Methods to introduce acid groups to an HDPE capillary bore, e.g., sulfonation using chlorosulfonic or sulfuric acid solutions, with or without grafting of an aromatic ring through photo‐ or chemical grafting first, are explored. Following quaternary ammonium latex attachment, the ion exchange capacity and separating abilities of each OTC were measured as an index of OTC performance. Gradual loss of capacity was observed for many of these; high‐resolution mass spectrometry confirmed the leaching of detached oxidized/sulfonated oligomeric fragments and consequent poisoning of the latex sites. Alkuraya‐Kučinskas syndrome (AKS) is an autosomal recessive multisystem disorder resulting from mutations in the BLTP1 gene, formerly known as KIAA1109. Primary manifestations include brain malformations, arthrogryposis, and clubfeet. Cardiac, renal, and ophthalmologic abnormalities may also be observed, while nonimmune hydrops is rare. We present a case of two novel BLTP1 canonical splice‐site variants in a fetus with multiple congenital anomalies, including hydrops, a kinked brainstem, and joint contractures. A systematic literature review was conducted to describe the prenatal phenotype of AKS, which was inspired by our case. Our systematic literature review of the prenatal phenotype in 19 cases, including our additional case, demonstrated joint contractures in 90% (18/20), ventriculomegaly in 60% (12/20), brainstem dysgenesis in 50% (10/20), cerebellar hypoplasia in 50% (10/20), parenchymal thinning with lissencephalic aspect in 60% (12/20), and facial dysmorphism in 70% (14/20) of reported AKS cases. In addition to our case, hydrops was reported in two other families. AKS should be considered in fetal presentations with characteristic features, especially brainstem kinking and joint contractures. Background: Despite widespread use of fecal immunochemical tests (FITs) for colorectal cancer (CRC) screening, data to guide test selection are limited. Objective: To compare the performance characteristics of 5 commonly used FITs, using colonoscopy as the reference standard. Design: Cross-sectional study. (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT03264898) Setting: Three U.S. academic medical centers and affiliated endoscopy units. Participants: Patients aged 50 to 85 years undergoing screening or surveillance colonoscopy. Intervention: Participants completed 5 different FITs before their colonoscopy, including 4 qualitative tests (Hemoccult ICT, Hemosure iFOB, OC-Light S FIT, QuickVue iFOB) and 1 quantitative test (OC-Auto FIT, which was run at the manufacturer's threshold for positivity of >100 ng/mL). Measurements: The primary outcome was test performance (sensitivity and specificity) for each of the 5 FITs for advanced colorectal neoplasia (ACN), defined as advanced polyps or CRC. Positivity rates, positive and negative predictive values, and rates of unevaluable tests were compared. Multivariable models were used to identify factors affecting sensitivity. Results: A total of 3761 participants were enrolled, with a mean age of 62.1 years (SD, 7.8); 63.2% of participants were female, 5.7% were Black, 86.4% were White, and 28.7% were Hispanic. There were 320 participants with ACN (8.5%), including 9 with CRC (0.2%). The test positivity rate varied 4-fold (3.9% to 16.4%) across FITs. Rates of unevaluable FITs ranged from 0.2% to 2.5%. The sensitivity for ACN varied from 10.1% to 36.7%, and specificity varied from 85.5% to 96.6%. Differences in sensitivity between FITs were all statistically significantly different except between Hemosure iFOB and QuickVue iFOB, and specificity differences were all statistically significantly different from one another. In addition to FIT brand, distal location of ACN was also associated with higher FIT sensitivity. Limitation: The study did not assess the programmatic sensitivity of annual FIT. Conclusion: Although considered a single class, FITs have varying test performance for detecting ACN and should not be considered interchangeable. Introduction/Aims: Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein A1 is involved in nucleic acid homeostatic functions. The encoding gene HNRNPA1 has been associated with several neuromuscular disorders including an amyotrophic lateral sclerosis‐like phenotype, distal hereditary motor neuropathy, multisystem proteinopathy, and various myopathies. We report two unrelated individuals with monoallelic stop loss variants affecting the same codon of HNRNPA1. Methods: Two individuals with unsolved juvenile‐onset myopathy were enrolled under approved institutional protocols. Phenotype data were collected and genetic analyses were performed, including whole‐exome sequencing (WES). Results: The two probands (MNOT002‐01 and K1440‐01) showed a similar onset of slowly progressive extremity and facial weakness in early adolescence. K1440‐01 presented with facial weakness, winged scapula, elevated serum creatine kinase (CK) levels, and mild neck weakness. MNOT002‐01 also exhibited elevated CK levels along with facial weakness, cardiomyopathy, respiratory dysfunction, pectus excavatum, a mildly rigid spine, and loss of ambulation. On quadriceps muscle biopsy, K1440‐01 displayed rounded myofibers, mild variation in fiber diameter, and type 2 fiber hypertrophy, while MNOT002‐01 displayed rimmed vacuoles. Monoallelic stop‐loss variants in HNRNPA1 were identified for both probands: c.1119A>C p.*373Tyrext*6 (K1440‐01) and c.1118A>C p.*373Serext*6 (MNOT002‐01) affect the same codon and are both predicted to lead to the addition of six amino acids before termination at an alternative stop codon. Discussion: Both stop‐loss variants in our probands are likely pathogenic. Our findings contribute to the disease characterization of pathogenic variants in HNRNPA1. In this study conducted along the coast of Odisha, India, reproductive trade-offs in isopods of the family Cymothoidae were investigated, focusing on the relationship between the number vs. volume of eggs and the percentage of brood to body volume. Ovigerous females from species with substantial sample sizes (n > 30) were analyzed to understand their survival strategies. The findings highlight distinct strategies among different parasite types within Cymothoidae. Buccal parasites such as Cymothoa frontalis and Cymothoa indica, along with branchial parasites like Joryma sawayah and Agarna malayi, generally produced a higher number of smaller eggs, except for A. malayi, which produced fewer but larger eggs. In contrast, the external body surface-attaching parasite, Nerocila orbignyi, was observed to produce fewer eggs of larger size. Across all parasite types (intraspecific), there was a statistically significant negative correlation between egg number and egg volume (p < 0.05). Buccal parasites were observed to have the highest percentage of marsupium volume relative to body volume, indicating a strategy to maximize egg storage. Conversely, external body surface-attaching parasites had the lowest percentage, possibly reflecting adaptation to a different reproductive environment. Additional observations revealed anatomical adaptations in all the studied isopod species which include the shift of the alimentary canal to the dorsal side to accommodate the development of the marsupial sac for egg incubation. Traditional asset management strategy has emphasized building barriers to entry or closely guarding unique assets to maintain a firm's comparative advantage. A new "inverted firm" paradigm, however, has emerged. Under this strategy, firms share data seeking to become platforms by opening digital services to third parties and capturing part of their external surplus. This contrasts with a "pipeline" strategy where the firm itself creates value. This paper quantitatively estimates the effect of adopting an inverted firm strategy through the lens of application programming interfaces (APIs), a key enabling technology. Using both public data and those of a private API development firm, we document rapid growth of the API network and connecting apps since 2005. We then perform difference-in-difference and synthetic control analyses and find that public firms adopting public APIs grew an additional 38.7% over 16 years relative to similar nonadopters. We find no significant effect from the use of APIs purely for internal productivity: the pipeline strategy. Within the subset of firms that adopt public APIs, those that attract more third-party complementors and those that become more central to the network see faster growth. Using variation in network centrality caused by API degradation, an instrumental variables analysis confirms a causal role for APIs in firm market value. Finally, we document an important downside of public APIs: increased risk of data breach. Overall, these facts lead us to conclude that APIs have a large and positive impact on economic growth and do so primarily by enabling an inverted firm strategy. This paper was accepted by D. J. Accurate taxonomic species identification is essential to the study of mammals. Despite this necessity, rapid and accurate identification of cryptic, understudied, and elusive mammals remains challenging. Traditional barcoding of mitochondrial genes is standard for molecular identification but requires time-consuming wet-lab methodologies. Recent bioinformatic advancements for nanopore sequencing data offer exciting opportunities for noninvasive and field-based identification of mammals. Nanopore adaptive sampling (NAS), a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-free method, selectively sequences regions of DNA according to user-specified reference databases. Here, we utilized NAS to enrich mammalian mitochondrial genome sequencing to identify species. Fecal DNA extractions were sequenced from 9 mammals, several collected in collaboration with Minnesota Tribal Nations, to demonstrate utility for NAS barcoding of noninvasive samples. By mapping to the entire National Center for Biotechnology Information mammalian mitochondrial reference genome database and bioinformatically analyzing highly similar matches, we successfully produced species identifications for all fecal samples. Eight of 9 species identifications matched previous PCR or animal/fecal appearance-based identifications. For the ninth species, our genetic data indicate a misidentification stemming from the original study. Our approach has a range of applications—particularly in field-based wildlife research, conservation, disease surveillance, and monitoring of wildlife trade. Of importance to Minnesota tribes is invasive species monitoring, detections, and confirmation as climate impacts cause changes in biodiversity and shifts in species distributions. The rapid assessment techniques described here will be useful as new introductions and range expansions of native and invasive species may first be detected by the presence of signs such as scat rather than direct observations and will be helpful for chronically understaffed tribal natural resources agencies. Altered motor and social-communicative abilities in infancy have been linked to later ASD diagnosis. Most diagnostic instruments for ASD cannot be utilized until 12 months, and the average child is diagnosed substantially later. Imitation combines motor and social-communicative skills and is commonly atypical in infants at risk for ASD. However, few measures have been developed to assess infant imitation clinically. One barrier to the diagnostic age gap of ASD is accessibility of screening and diagnostic services. Utilization of caregiver report to reliably screen for ASD mitigates such barriers and could aid in earlier detection. The present study developed and validated a caregiver-report measure of infant imitation at 4, 6, and 9 months and explored the relationship between caregiver-reported imitation and motor abilities with later ASD risk. Participants (N = 571) were caregivers of term and preterm infants recruited as part of a large multi-site study of PediaTrac™, a web-based tool for monitoring and tracking infant development. Caregivers completed online surveys and established questionnaires on a schedule corresponding to well-child visits from birth to 18 months, including the M-CHAT-R/F at 18 months. Distinct imitation factors were derived from PediaTrac at 4, 6, and 9 months via factor analysis. The results supported validity of the imitation factors via associations with measures of infant communication (CSBS; ASQ). Imitation and motor skills at 9 months predicted 18-month ASD risk over and above gestational age. Background: Septic patients who develop acute respiratory failure (ARF) requiring mechanical ventilation represent a heterogenous subgroup of critically ill patients with widely variable clinical characteristics. Identifying distinct phenotypes of these patients may reveal insights about the broader heterogeneity in the clinical course of sepsis, considering multi-organ dynamics. We aimed to derive novel phenotypes of sepsis-induced ARF using observational clinical data and investigate the generalizability of the derived phenotypes. Methods: We performed a multi-center retrospective study of ICU patients with sepsis who required mechanical ventilation for ≥ 24 h. Data from two different high-volume academic hospital centers were used, where all phenotypes were derived in MICU of Hospital-I (N = 3225). The derived phenotypes were validated in MICU of Hospital-II (N = 848), SICU of Hospital-I (N = 1112), and SICU of Hospital-II (N = 465). Clinical data from 24 h preceding intubation was used to derive distinct phenotypes using an explainable machine learning-based clustering model interpreted by clinical experts. Results: Four distinct ARF phenotypes were identified: A (severe multi-organ dysfunction (MOD) with a high likelihood of kidney injury and heart failure), B (severe hypoxemic respiratory failure [median P/F = 123]), C (mild hypoxia [median P/F = 240]), and D (severe MOD with a high likelihood of hepatic injury, coagulopathy, and lactic acidosis). Patients in each phenotype showed differences in clinical course and mortality rates despite similarities in demographics and admission co-morbidities. The phenotypes were reproduced in external validation utilizing the MICU of Hospital-II and SICUs from Hospital-I and -II. Kaplan–Meier analysis showed significant difference in 28-day mortality across the phenotypes (p < 0.01) and consistent across MICU and SICU of both Hospital-I and -II. The phenotypes demonstrated differences in treatment effects associated with high positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) strategy. Conclusion: The phenotypes demonstrated unique patterns of organ injury and differences in clinical outcomes, which may help inform future research and clinical trial design for tailored management strategies. An improved approach was developed for the genetic manipulation of the Grampositive extremophile Halalkalibacterium halodurans (formerly called Bacillus halodurans). We describe an allelic replacement method originally developed for Staphylococcus aureus that allows the deletion, mutation, or insertion of genes without leaving markers or other genetic scars. In addition, a protocol for rapid in vitro plasmid methylation and transformation is presented. The combined methods allow the routine genetic manipulation of H. halodurans from initial transformation to the desired strain in 8 days. Increased temperatures are altering rates of organic matter (OM) breakdown in stream ecosystems with implications for carbon (C) cycling in the face of global change. The metabolic theory of ecology (MTE) provides a framework for predicting temperature effects on OM breakdown, but differences in the temperature dependence of breakdown driven by different organismal groups (i.e., microorganisms vs. invertebrate detritivores) and litter species remain unresolved. Over two years, we conducted 12 60‐day leaf litterbag incubations in 20 headwater streams in the southern Appalachian Mountains (USA). We compared temperature dependence (as activation energy, Ea) between microbial and detritivore‐mediated breakdown, and between a highly recalcitrant (Rhododendron maximum) and a relatively labile (Acer rubrum) leaf species. Detritivore‐mediated breakdown had a higher Ea than microbial breakdown for both leaf species (Rhododendron: 1.48 > 0.56 eV; Acer: 0.97 > 0.29 eV), and Rhododendron breakdown had a higher Ea than Acer breakdown for both organismal groups. Similarly, the Ea of total (coarse‐mesh) Rhododendron breakdown was higher than the Ea of total Acer breakdown (0.89 > 0.52 eV). These effects for total breakdown were large, implying that the number of days to 95% mass loss would decline by 40% for Rhododendron and 26% for Acer between 12°C (our mean temperature value) and 16°C (+4°C, reflecting projected increases in global surface temperature due to climate change). Despite patterns in Ea, overall breakdown rates were higher for microbes than detritivores, and for Acer than Rhododendron over most of our temperature gradient. Additionally, the Ea for a subset of the microbial breakdown data declined from 0.40 to 0.22 eV when fungal biomass was included as a model predictor, highlighting the key role of fungi in determining the temperature dependence of litter breakdown. Our results imply that, as streams warm, routing of leaf litter C to detritivore‐mediated fates will increase faster than predicted by previous studies and MTE, especially for labile litter. As temperatures rise, earlier depletion of autumn‐shed, labile leaf litter combined with rapid breakdown rates of recalcitrant litter could exacerbate seasonal resource limitation and alter carbon storage and transport dynamics in temperate headwater stream networks. Background: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a highly aggressive disease characterized by complex metabolic rewiring that enables growth in changing nutrient availability and oxygen conditions. Transcriptome-based prognostic PDAC tumor subtypes, known as 'basal-like' and 'classical' subtypes are associated with differences in metabolic gene expression including genes involved in glycolysis. Tumor subtype-specific metabolism phenotypes may provide new targets for treatment development in PDAC, but their functional relevance has not been fully elucidated. We aimed to investigate differences in metabolic profiles and transcriptomes in tumor models derived from patients with basal-like and classical tumors. Methods: Patient-derived organoids (PDOs) were established from tumor biopsies collected from patients with metastatic PDAC, including three PDOs from basal-like and five PDOs from classical tumors. Metabolic analyses included assessment of differences in metabolic activity using Seahorse Glycolysis and Mito Stress tests and 13C-glucose metabolites tracing analysis. In order to investigate the influence of mitochondrial pyruvate transport on metabolic differences, PDOs were treated with the mitochondrial pyruvate carrier 1 (MPC1) inhibitor UK-5099. Prognostic relevance of MPC1 was determined using a tumor tissue microarray (TMA) in resectable, and proteomics profiling in metastatic PDAC datasets. Whole genome and transcriptome sequencing, differential gene expression and gene set enrichment analyses were performed in PDOs. Results: Metastatic PDAC PDOs showed subtype-specific differences in glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS). Basal-like tumor-derived PDOs had a lower baseline extracellular acidification rate, but higher glycolytic reserves and oxygen consumption rate (OCR) than classical tumor-derived PDOs. OCR difference was eliminated following treatment with UK-5099. In the 13C-glucose metabolites tracing experiment, a basal-like tumor PDO showed lower fractions of some M + 2 metabolites but higher sensitivity to UK-5099 mediated reduction in M + 2 metabolites than a classical tumor PDO. Protein level analyses revealed lower MPC1 protein levels in basal-like PDAC cases and association of low MPC1 levels with clinicopathologic parameters of tumor aggressiveness in PDAC. PDO differential gene expression analyses identified additional subtype-specific cellular pathways and potential disease outcome biomarkers. Conclusions: Our findings point to distinct metabolic profiles in PDAC subtypes with basal-like tumor PDOs showing higher OXPHOS and sensitivity to MPC1 inhibition. Organic mixed ionic‐electronic conductors (OMIECs) have emerged as promising materials for a wide range of next‐generation technologies, including bioelectronics and neuromorphic computing. The performance of these materials depends on the transport of ions through the polycrystalline polymer matrix as well as how the distribution of ions and polarons in crystalline and amorphous regions impacts electronic transport. However, it is often challenging to distinguish whether ions enter crystalline or amorphous regions. In this work, steady‐state and time‐resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectroelectrochemistry is used to probe initial ion insertion in crystalline and amorphous regions of the OMIEC material poly(3‐[2‐[2‐(2‐methoxyethoxy)ethoxy]ethyl]thiophene ‐2,5‐diyl) (P3MEEET) as a function of applied voltage. It is found that PL spectroelectrochemistry reports on the initial stages of electrochemical doping through the quenching of PL emission. By distinguishing between amorphous and crystalline contributions to the PL spectrum, ion insertion in crystalline and amorphous regions as a function of voltage is tracked. It is found that PL spectroelectrochemistry is much more sensitive to the initial injection of ions than complementary methods, highlighting its potential as a sensitive tool for interrogating ion injection in OMIECs.
