(1) Background: We examined the effect of the acute administration of olive oil (EVOO), linseed oil (GLO), soybean oil (SO), and palm oil (PO) on gastric motility and appetite in rats. (2) Methods: We assessed food intake, gastric retention (GR), and gene expression in all groups. (3) Results: Both EVOO and GLO were found to enhance the rate of stomach retention, leading to a decrease in hunger. On the other hand, the reduction in food intake caused by SO was accompanied by delayed effects on stomach retention. PO caused an alteration in the mRNA expression of NPY, POMC, and CART. Although PO increased stomach retention after 180 min, it did not affect food intake. It was subsequently verified that the absence of an autonomic reaction did not nullify the influence of EVOO in reducing food consumption. Moreover, in the absence of parasympathetic responses, animals that received PO exhibited a significant decrease in food consumption, probably mediated by lower NPY expression. (4) Conclusions: This study discovered that different oils induce various effects on parameters related to food consumption. Specifically, EVOO reduces food consumption primarily through its impact on the gastrointestinal tract, making it a recommended adjunct for weight loss. Conversely, the intake of PO limits food consumption in the absence of an autonomic reaction, but it is not advised due to its contribution to the development of cardiometabolic disorders. Background In high-resource settings, the survival of children with immunocompromise (IC) has increased and immunosuppressive therapies are increasingly being used. This study aimed to determine the clinical characteristics, performance of diagnostic tools, and outcome of IC children with tuberculosis (TB) in Europe. Methods Multicenter, matched case-control study within the Pediatric Tuberculosis Network European Trials Group, capturing TB cases <18 years diagnosed 2000–2020. Results A total of 417 TB cases were included, comprising 139 children who are IC (human immunodeficiency virus, inborn errors of immunity, drug-induced immunosuppression, and other immunocompromising conditions) and 278 non-IC children as controls. Nonrespiratory TB was more frequent among cases than controls (32.4% vs 21.2%; P =.013). Patients with IC had an increased likelihood of presenting with severe disease (57.6% vs 38.5%; P <.001; odds ratio [95% confidence interval], 2.073 [1.37–3.13]). Children with IC had higher rates of false-negative tuberculin skin test (31.9% vs 6.0%; P <.001) and QuantiFERON-TB Gold assay (30.0% vs 7.3%; P <.001) results at diagnosis. Overall, the microbiological confirmation rate was similar in IC and non-IC cases (58.3% vs 49.3%; P =.083). Although the mortality in children with IC was <1%, the rate of long-term sequelae was significantly higher than in non-IC cases (14.8% vs 6.1%; P =.004). Conclusions Children with IC and TB in Europe have increased rates of nonrespiratory TB, severe disease, and long-term sequelae. Immune-based TB tests have poor sensitivity in those children. Future research should focus on developing improved immunological TB tests that perform better in patients with IC, and determining the reasons for the increased risk of long-term sequelae, with the aim to design preventive management strategies. TiO2/Nb5+ film was prepared and deposited on 304 steel and preventive its potential for corrosion was evaluated. The film was obtained by the sol–gel method, and its deposition by the dip-coating process has been followed by thermal treatment. XRD results with Rietveld refinement revealed the occurrence of isomorphic substitution and predominance of anatase phase. Scanning electron microscopy confirmed the deposition of film on substrate. Corrosion properties of the TiO2/Nb5+ layer was determined by open-circuit potential, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Polarization curves showed a corrosion current of 129.72 μA for 304 steel without coating, which was larger than that observed for the samples recovered with TiO2/Nb5+ films (9.00 μA). EIS revealed high charge transfer resistance in the molar ratio of 1 to 5% compared to the uncoated 304 steel, highlighting the protective effect of TiO2/Nb5+ films against corrosion. Since its onset, scholars have characterized social media as a valuable source for data collection since it presents several benefits (e.g. exploring research questions with hard-to-reach populations). Nonetheless, methods of online data collection are riddled with ethical and methodological challenges that researchers must consider if they want to adopt good practices when collecting and analyzing online data. Drawing from our primary research project, where we collected passive online data on Reddit, we explore and detail the steps that researchers must consider before collecting online data: (1) planning online data collection; (2) ethical considerations; and (3) data collection. We also discuss two atypical questions that researchers should also consider: (1) how to handle deleted user-generated content; and (2) how to quote user-generated content. Moving on from the dichotomous discussion between what is public and private data, we present recommendations for good practices when collecting and analyzing qualitative online data. In this work, vanadium-substituted cesium phosphomolybdate salts were evaluated as catalysts in glycerol furfural condensation reactions, an attractive route to produce fuel-green bioadditives. Molybdenum atoms of phosphomolybdic acid were substituted with vanadium and precipitated as cesium salts generating catalysts with general formulae Cs3+nPMo12-nVnO40 (n = 1–3). Among the salts evaluated, Cs4PMo11V1O40 was the most active and selective catalyst toward the glyceryl furfural acetals, isomers (dioxolane: dioxane) were obtained at 2: 1 molar ratio with 90% conversion after a 2 h reaction at room temperature. The effect of main reaction parameters such as the glycerol: furfural molar ratio, the catalyst load, solvent, vanadium load, and the temperature were studied. The use of a solid, active, and easily synthesizable catalyst makes this an attractive route to produce fuel bioadditives from renewable raw materials at room temperature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One of the most important steps in identifying priority areas for conservation is the assessment of species richness and their extinction risks. While most species remain undescribed, the identification of cryptic lineages is frequent in phylogenetic and phylogeographic studies. This is particularly common in troglobites, exclusively subterranean organisms. The Jandaíra Formation, in the Brazilian semiarid, combines the occurrence of extensive karstic areas with hundreds of caves and subterranean aquifers in a region with intense paleoclimatic changes. This region is recognized for the richness of troglobitic species, some of which are widely distributed in heterogeneous areas. This suggests cryptic lineages that can be differentially exposed to anthropogenic threats, with distinct extinction risks regarding the nominal taxa of which they putatively belong. To test it, a large sampling was conducted and, by means of lineage delimitation analyses, the genetic structure of four troglobitic taxa, three aquatic and one terrestrial, was evaluated. In addition, the extinction risk of these lineages was assessed and priority areas for conservation were identified. The results indicated that while Cirolanidae sp. 1 (Isopoda) is a single species widely distributed, Cirolanidae sp. 2, Potiberaba porakuara (Amphipoda) and Kinnapotiguara troglobia (Hemiptera) present an extensive diversity of cryptic and endemic lineages, most of which are likely new threatened species. Furthermore, two priority areas for conservation of these lineages were identified. Thus, comparative phylogeography may represent a first step in the conservation of subterranean taxa, indicating areas that should be prioritized in a context of increasing threats and dwindling conservation resources. This study analyses how startups implement circular business models supported by innovation and Industry 4.0, in which strategic stakeholders for value creation are to be found in this specific business ecosystem. The theoretical framework of circular business models supported by innovation was used for analysing the startups based on some assumptions of stakeholder theory. Fifty-one startups were selected, which correspond to the unit of analysis for this study on the improvement of supply chains through circular business models supported by innovation aimed at sustainability in organizations. We conducted a multiple case study whose results suggest that: (i) circularity is strategic for the business to assume its commitment to a sustainable development agenda, especially regarding pollution prevention and proactive action; (ii) visionary entrepreneurs are actively engaged with circular economy practices and technological innovation to promote a circular flow for their business ecosystem; (iii) Industry 4.0 is still incipient, but it is synergistic and beneficial for a successful circular economy in startups; and (iv) primary stakeholders are the activators of circular cycles in the startups surveyed. The present study contributes to the literature in four ways by: (i) presenting a framework which brings together exploratory theoretical propositions on strategic stakeholders for startups, innovative capabilities and assumptions of circular business models; (ii) validating exploratory theoretical propositions with 51 startups; (iii) providing lessons learned so far by the startups which are in line with the assumptions of circular business models for triggering their innovation capabilities and promoting Industry 4.0; (iv) providing an original typology of circular economy assumptions and technological innovations adopted by startups. The originality of this study lies in presenting useful insights for motivating managers to: (i) invest in circular business to become one of the first entrants and earn extra profits; (ii) make investments in circular business and technological innovations to obtain efficiency, practicality and process optimization; (iii) internalize Industry 4.0 technologies concomitantly with technological innovations and circular economy to generate systemic effects; (iv) integrate relevant stakeholders of the business ecosystem to generate a synergistic and effective effect for sustainable development. Due to the high abrasiveness and anisotropic nature of composites, along with the need to machine different materials at the same time, drilling multi-materials is a difficult task, and usually results in material damage, such as uncut fibres and delamination, hindering hole functionality and reliability. Image processing and analysis algorithms can be developed to effectively assess such damage, allowing for the calculation of delamination factors essential to the quality control of hole inspection in composite materials. In this study, a digital image processing and analysis algorithm was developed in Python to perform the delamination evaluation of drilled holes on a carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) and aluminium (Al) multi-material. This algorithm was designed to overcome several limitations often found in other algorithms developed with similar purposes, which frequently lead to user mistakes and incorrect results. The new algorithm is easy to use and, without requiring manual pre-editing of the input images, is fully automatic, provides more complete and reliable results (such as the delamination factor), and is a free-of-charge software. For example, the delamination factors of two drilled holes were calculated using the new algorithm and one previously developed in Matlab. Using the previous Matlab algorithm, the delamination factors of the two holes were 1.380 and 2.563, respectively, and using the new Python algorithm, the results were equal to 3.957 and 3.383, respectively. The Python results were more trustworthy, as the first hole had a higher delamination area, so its factor should be higher than that of the second one. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In several industrial fields, environmental and operational data are acquired with numerous purposes, potentially generating a huge quantity of data containing valuable information for management actions. This work proposes a methodology for clustering time series based on the K-medoids algorithm using a convex combination of different time series correlation metrics, the COMB distance. The multidimensional scaling procedure is used to enhance the visualization of the clustering results, and a matrix plot display is proposed as an efficient visualization tool to interpret the COMB distance components. This is a general-purpose methodology that is intended to ease time series interpretation; however, due to the relevance of the field, this study explores the clustering of time series judiciously collected from data of a wind farm located on a complex terrain. Using the COMB distance for wind speed time bands, clustering exposes operational similarities and dissimilarities among neighboring turbines which are influenced by the turbines' relative positions and terrain features and regarding the direction of oncoming wind. In a significant number of cases, clustering does not coincide with the natural geographic grouping of the turbines. A novel representation of the contributing distances—the COMB distance matrix plot—provides a quick way to compare pairs of time bands (turbines) regarding various features. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The combination of TiO2 and Nb2O5 in thin films has proven promising for preventing the corrosion of AISI 304. The thin films are developed using sol–gel and dip‐coating techniques, followed by heat treatment. Morphological and X‐ray diffraction analyses indicate a predominant anatase phase in TiO2, and isomorphic substitution of up to 20% Nb occurs in the thin‐film composition. Phase segregation above 30% is observed. Electrochemical tests are conducted in a 2 mol L−1 HCl solution. Scanning electron microscopy reveals satisfactory thin film deposition on AISI 304 but shows the presence of regions with discontinuities. Polarization curves show a corrosion current of 128.72 μA for pure AISI 304, an average corrosion current of 0.34 μA for thin films, and an average of 6.44 μA for films with discontinuities. This significant reduction in current demonstrates the efficiency of the corrosion protection of the film at the studied concentrations because of the high corrosion inhibition percentages. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results suggest a high charge transfer resistance, indicating a lower corrosion rate in xTiO2 the yNb2O5 films compared to uncoated AISI 304. Auxiliary functions in software systems, often overlooked due to their perceived simplicity, play a crucial role in overall system reliability. This study focuses on the effectiveness of agile practices, specifically the pair programming and the test-first programming practices. Despite the importance of these functions, there exists a dearth of empirical evidence on the impact of agile practices on their development, raising questions about their potential to enhance correctness without affecting time-to-market. This paper aims to bridge this gap by comparing the application of agile practices with traditional approaches in the context of auxiliary function development. We conducted six experiments involving 122 participants (85 novices and 37 professionals) who used both traditional and agile methods to develop six auxiliary functions across three different domains. Our analysis of 244 implementations suggests the potential benefits of agile practices in auxiliary function development. Pair programming showed a tendency towards improved correctness, while test-first programming did not significantly extend the total development time, particularly among professionals. However, these findings should be interpreted cautiously as they do not conclusively establish that agile practices outperform traditional approaches universally. As indicated by our results, the potential benefits of agile practices may vary depending on factors such as the programmer's experience level and the nature of the functions being developed. A significant and increasing number of studies have been dedicated to complex concentrated alloys (CCAs) due to the improved properties that these metallic materials can exhibit. However, while most of these studies employ melting techniques, only a few explore powder metallurgy and pressureless sintering as production methods. In this work, a microstructural characterization of AlCrCuFeMnNi CCA samples obtained by powder metallurgy and pressureless sintering using mixtures of powders with different compositions was carried out. One batch of samples (B1) was prepared using commercial powders of Al, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Ni. Another batch (B2) used mixtures of CrFeMn, AlNi, and Cu powders. A third set of samples (B3) was obtained by adding 1% at. of Mg to the B2 powder. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, density measurements, and hardness tests. Thermodynamic calculations were also used to complement the microstructural characterization. All the obtained samples exhibited high relative density and hardness values. However, B3 samples showed a higher hardness, attributed to the finer distribution of oxide particles, which was promoted by the presence of Mg during sintering. These last samples presented a hardness/density ratio of 62 HV/(g cm−3), surpassing that of some martensitic stainless steels and nickel–titanium alloys. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this initial study of a research project, this paper seeks to understand the thermal conditions in the cities of Lisbon and Munich, specifically focusing on Urban Heat Island intensity and on thermal comfort using the Universal Thermal Climate Index modeling data at the Local Climate Zone scale. Based on these datasets, Munich has exhibited more unfavourable thermal conditions than Lisbon. In terms of UHII, both cities have shown that low, medium, and high rise compact urban areas and bare rock or paved areas have the highest values, while sparsely built areas have the lowest. These results differ from the UTCI, which indicates that in Lisbon and Munich, these sparsely built areas as well as areas with low plants and vegetation are the most uncomfortable. In Munich, the population was exposed to very strong heat stress, while Lisbon experienced strong heat stress conditions. Conversely, low, medium, and high rise compact urban areas and densely wooded areas in Munich, and scattered trees areas and large low-rise urban areas in Lisbon, have demonstrated the lowest monthly mean and average maximum values. These results will be further explored in future studies in the city of Lisbon and cross-checked with data obtained from roving missions. This will enable a more detailed temporal and local analysis. Hospital accreditation has become ubiquitous in developing countries. While research acknowledges that accreditation can enhance healthcare quality, efficiency, and safety, concerns persist regarding hospitals' management of conflicts stemming from the diverse institutional logic inherent in this process. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate how professional and market logic, alongside conflicts arising from institutional demands, affect compliance with hospital accreditation. To this end, we conducted a multiple-case study in four Brazilian hospitals employing in-depth interviews and on-site observations. The triangulation of narrative analysis and the outcomes of multiple correspondence analysis revealed that when professional logic predominates, there is a greater propensity to tailor accredited activities by segmenting the tasks between physicians and nurses with the intention of mitigating existing conflicts. Conversely, when conflicts occur over established goals between professionals and orientated marked logic executives, the accreditation process is impeded, resulting in non-compliance. Ultimately, the findings underscore the alignment between the pursuit of legitimacy and efficiency within the accreditation process. A fundamental study of CO 2 / CH 4 plasma is performed in a glow discharge at a few Torr. Experimental and numerical results are compared to identify the main reaction pathways. OES-based techniques and FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared) spectroscopy are used to determine molecules densities and gas temperature. Several conditions of pressure, initial mixture and residence time are measured. The main dissociation products are found to be CO and H 2 . The LoKI simulation tool was used to build a simplified kinetic scheme to limit the uncertainties on rate coefficients, but sufficient to reproduce the experimental data. To this aim, only molecules containing at most one carbon atom are considered based on the experimental observations. Obtaining a good match between the experimental data and the simulation requires the inclusion of reactions involving the excited state O (1 D) . The key role of CH 3 radical is also emphasized. The good match obtained between the experiment and the simulation allows to draw the main reaction pathways of the low-pressure CO 2 - CH 4 plasmas, in particular to identify the main back reaction mechanisms for CO 2 . The role of CH 2 O and H 2 O in the gas phase is also discussed in depth as they appear to play an important role on catalytic surface studied in the part II of this study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In situ FTIR transmission experiments for CO 2 and CO 2 – CH 4 plasma were performed for a fundamental study of surface plasma interaction with cerium oxide ( CeO 2 ) as catalytic surface. Utilizing a DC glow discharge plasma reactor at low pressure, it was observed that CO 2 gas adsorbs in the surface forming tridentate carbonates and hydrogen carbonates. When CO 2 – CH 4 plasma is ignited, formate species were formed while carbonate species disappeared from the surface. The CeO 2 pellet has also been placed downstream the plasma in order to observe the role of the gas composition at the exit of CO 2 – CH 4 plasma on CeO 2 without any heating or strong electric field. In addition, the effect of water was investigated in several surface phenomena. OH groups play an important role in the reaction with tridentate carbonates to generate formates under plasma. The gas phase chemistry of the CO 2 – CH 4 plasma used here has been described in details in the part I of this work. The conclusions drawn on the gas phase contribute to the understanding of the observed phenomena on CeO 2 . These results enlighten the complex mechanisms occurring during CO 2 – CH 4 plasma reactions on surfaces that could help in the improvement of CO 2 recycling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data from the Sentinel-1 (S1) mission with its high temporal and spatial resolution allows for an automated detection of lake ice break-up timings from surface backscatter differences across south (S), southwest (SW), and northwest (NW) Greenland (<71 ° N latitude) during the period 2017 to 2021. Median break-up dates of the 563 studied lakes range between 8 June and 10 July, with the earliest being in 2019 and the latest in 2018. There is a strong correlation between the break-up date and elevation, while a weak relationship with latitude and lake area could be observed. Lake-specific median break-up timings for 2017–2021 increase (i.e., are later) by 3 d per 100 m elevation gain. When assuming an earlier break-up timing of 8 d which corresponds to the observed median variability of ±8 d, the introduced excess energy due to a changing surface albedo from snow-covered ice surface to water translates to melting 0.4 ± 0.1 m thick ice at the melting point or heating up a water depth down to 35 ± 3 m by 1 K across the entire surface area of each respective lake. Upscaling the results to 100 486 lakes across the S, SW, and NW regions, which correspond to 64.5 % of all lakes or 62.1 % of the overall lake area in Greenland, yields an estimate of 1.8 × 10 6 TJ additional energy input. This translates to melting 5.8 Gt ice at the melting point or warming 432.3 Gt water by 1 K. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Silicotungstic acid potassium salts had the silicon heteroatom substituted by Co(III) or Co(II) cations and were evaluated as catalysts in oxidation reactions of terpenic alcohols with hydrogen peroxide. Borneol was the model molecule selected. All the catalyst salts were characterized by Fourier-transformed infrared, ultraviolet–visible and Raman spectroscopies, thermal analyses, powder X-rays diffraction and cyclic voltammetry analyses, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and scam electronic microscopy (SEM) analyses, potentiometric titration. This set of techniques revealed that salts containing Co(II) or Co(III) as the heteroatom were successfully obtained. The activity of potassium dodecatungstocobaltate(III) (i.e., K5CoIIIW12O40) was compared to other tungsten heteropoly catalysts (i.e., H4SiW12O40, K4SiW12O40, K6CoIIW12O40, Co2SiW12O40) and the precursor CoCl2. Among the various heteropoly compound investigated, the K5CoIIIW12O40 salt was the most active and selective catalyst toward oxidation product (i.e., camphor). Conversion and selectivity higher than 90% were achieved, indicating the high efficiency of this catalyst. The effects of the main reaction parameters such as temperature, the stoichiometry of reactants, type and catalyst load, were investigated. Special attention was given to correlating the structural properties of catalysts with their activity. Based on experimental data, a reaction pathway was proposed. As far as we know, it is the first time that silicotungstic acid-derived salts having heteroatom Co(II) or Co(III) cations, were used as catalysts in oxidation reactions of terpene alcohols. The effect of the oxidation state and position of Co on the activity of silicotungstic acid was evaluated. The H4SiW12O40 had the Si(IV) heteroatom exchanged with Co(II) or Co(III). Their potassium salts were tested in borneol oxidation reactions with H2O2 being the K5CoIIIW12O40 the most active and selective catalyst. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Micro-milling of cemented carbides is a challenging task due to their high hardness, low toughness and high wear resistance. Ensuring good surface quality and dimensional accuracy is crucial for extending parts service life, which in turn enhances economical and environmental sustainability. This paper is mainly focused on evaluating surface formation mechanisms, scale effects, fracture behaviour and chip formation using distinct cemented carbide micro-milling tools with multi-layer diamond HF-CVD. In order to achieve higher precision and more efficient micro-milling operations on WC-15Co and WC-10Co, a systematic experimental approach has been carried out. The influence of cutting parameters, achievable surface quality and defects occurrence were thoroughly examined. Experimental results evidence the influence of operational conditions on the chip formation of cemented carbides as well as an important impact of the utilized cutting tool. Micro-pits, cracks, thin ploughing layer and fractured workpiece edges are amongst the observed surface damage mechanisms. A ductile cutting regime of the high-hardness composite material is confirmed, exhibited by the plastic deformation even when small depths of cut are considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The term 'service user' is an amorphous concept that can refer to a variety of groups. It refers to people who use or have used a service, or to the carers or parents of service users, or it can be used to refer to lay people, the public or non-professionals. It can also be used to refer to all or any combination of these. To maximise the potential of simulation, it is crucial to involve service users: their inclusion in the co-design of simulations, alongside patient educators and participatory decision-makers, provides invaluable input from a patient perspective. They also make an important contribution by portraying patients in the scenarios within which students interact, providing perspectives based on real-life experiences, offering students an insight into how patients could respond. Such an approach to designing simulations as part of nursing education will help develop professionals who are more patient-centred, culturally competent and more responsive to patient needs. Low vitamin B12 has been associated with raised plasma homocysteines and the consumption of B vitamins has been shown to reduce homocysteines. Raised levels of homocysteines have been linked to causing symptoms of mental illness. B12 is also required in the synthesis of monoamines and is required to maintain neurological health. Aim: This study reviews research into the effects of the supplementation of B12 in the prevention and recovery of mental illness, and the potentiation of psychotropic medication. Methodology: This literature review follows a systematic approach to searching databases CINAHL, EMBASE, Medline, and PsycINFO where 287 non-duplicated articles results were received. Appropriate articles were identified through title and abstract screening and inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied. Five articles were chosen to address the research question following critical appraisal. Thematic analysis was then conducted. Findings: This review identified five randomised controlled trials into the supplementation of various doses of B12 in conjunction with folic acid and B6. The supplement was measured against post-stroke depression prevention, the reduction of symptoms of depression in woman with cardiovascular disease, the effect on negative symptoms in schizophrenia, the reduction and prevention of depression in older adults, and the potentiation of psychotropic interventions. The papers reviewed showed inconclusive results, but evidence to support sub-groups and specific high-risk groups. Strong evidence showed supplementation of B12, folic acid and B6 has high rates of preventing post-stroke depression. Conclusion: The findings show that this area of research is still to be developed. The effects of B12 supplementation with other B vitamins on mental health have shown to be inconclusive. There is a case for its use to be considered within certain patient groups to aid recovery of mental health or in some high-risk patient groups. Simple Summary: Because the spineless cactus has a low dry matter, neutral detergent fiber and crude protein content, its use alone is not recommended, and it should be combined with other bulky food sources, such as gliricidia, pornunça and buffel grass, as they are found in abundance in semi-arid regions and nutritionally complement the cactus. Thus, a homogeneous mixture of spineless cactus-based silage in combination with these tropical forages can reduce the selection of components by animals, benefiting their performance and reducing costs compared to their conventional diet, given the more efficient intake. This study investigated the chemical composition, fractionation of carbohydrates and proteins, ruminal degradation kinetics and in vitro gas production of silages composed of cactus and tropical forage plants and their potential use as exclusive feed for sheep. Mixed spineless cactus silages with tropical forages have positive effects on ruminal degradation, digestibility and gas production. Mixed spineless cactus silage with tropical forages can be used as exclusive feed for sheep and can replace corn silage in diet composition. The aim was to evaluate the chemical composition, carbohydrates, protein fractionation and in vitro gas production of silages composed of spineless cactus and tropical forages and their effect on sheep performance. Treatments consisted of silages: corn silage (CS), spineless cactus silage (SCS), spineless cactus + gliricidia (SCG), spineless cactus + buffel grass silage (SCBG) and spineless cactus + pornunça (SCP). Silos were opened 60 days after ensiling, and analyses were carried out. The digestibility test lasted for 36 days, with eight animals per treatment. A completely randomized design was adopted. Considering carbohydrate fractionation, CS, SCS and SCBG silages had higher total carbohydrate content (p = 0.001). The SCS silage presented a higher A + B1 fraction (p = 0.001). The SCBG and SCG silages showed a higher B2 fraction (p < 0.0001) compared to the CS and SCS silages. The SCBG and SCP silages presented a higher C fraction (p = 0.001). For protein fractionation, the SCP and SCG silages showed higher crude protein contents (p = 0.001). The CS and SCS silages showed a higher A fraction (p = 0.001). The SCBG silage presented a higher B1 + B2 fraction (p = 0.001). The SCG silage showed a higher B3 fraction (p = 0.006) compared to SCBG silage. The SCS and SCP silages showed a higher C fraction (p = 0.001). Exclusive SCS silage showed higher in vitro dry matter digestibility (p = 0.001), dry matter degradability (p = 0.001) and total gas production (p = 0.001). The use of the SCBG, SCP and SCG silages to feed sheep increased the dry matter intake (p < 0.001). Sheep fed the SCG silage showed greater dry matter and crude protein digestibility compared to the sheep fed the CS, SCS and SCP silages (p = 0.002). There was a higher water intake (p < 0.001) with the use of the SCS and SCG silages to feed the sheep. The SCP and SCG silages provided a greater intake (p < 0.001) and excretion (p < 0.001) of nitrogen by the animals. Although there were no differences between the treatments for daily gains, lambs that received the spineless cactus-based silage associated with tropical forages showed higher gains (160–190 g/day) than lambs that received CS silage (130 g/day). Thus, the use of spineless cactus associated with buffelgrass, pornunça and gliricidia to prepare mixed silages (60:40) to feed sheep has potential use to feed sheep, with positive effects on nutrient degradation and increases in dry matter intake. Under experimental conditions, we recommend the exclusive use of spineless cactus silage associated with buffel grass, pornunça and gliricidia in feeding sheep in semi-arid regions, as it provides nutrients, water and greater daily gains compared to corn silage. to describe a clinical case of ocular sarcoidosis in a patient with Autoimmune Polyglandular Syndrome Type 2 (APS-2). an 86-year-old female diagnosed with APS-2 was referred to our uveitis department with rapid visual loss in her left eye during a 3-month period. Her best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was counting fingers in her left eye (OS) and 20/40 in her right eye (OD). Slit-lamp biomicroscopy was unremarkable OD but revealed granulomatous keratic precipitates OS. Fundoscopy revealed bilateral optic disc oedema and +2 and 4+ vitritis (SUN classification) in her OD and OS, respectively. the patient underwent chest X-Ray which revealed bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy and fibrosis. On high-resolution computed tomography of the lungs, ground-glass opacities were visible, and a diagnosis of ocular sarcoidosis was presumed. After exclusion of infectious diseases, the patient was treated with methotrexate and oral corticosteroids and there was substantial improvement of the optic nerve oedema and vitritis. A comprehensive investigation regarding the hygrothermal behavior of a constructive solution containing phase change materials (PCMs) was performed on a full-scale test cell, divided into two similar compartments. This involved hygrothermal monitoring (indoor air temperature) of the two compartments, in which one had PCM incorporated into the floor mortar. The main goal of this research was to investigate the potential of this kind of solution for overheating mitigation. The numerical study was conducted using EnergyPlus® software (version 9.0), exploring different natural ventilation flow rates to gauge the novel solution's potential to reduce overheating rates. The results from the monitoring studies revealed prolonged periods of thermal discomfort in both test cells, particularly overheating. However, it was proven that the PCM application in one of the test cells led to a reduction of almost 10 °C in the maximum peak of air temperature. In the simulation analysis, the increase in the ventilation rate led to a linear decrease in the overheating hours of up to one renovation per hour, and then the reductions were attenuated. Chondrosia reniformis is a collagen-rich marine sponge that is considered a sustainable and viable option for producing an alternative to mammalian-origin collagens. However, there is a lack of knowledge regarding the properties of collagen isolated from different sponge parts, namely the outer region, or cortex, (ectosome) and the inner region (choanosome), and how it affects the development of biomaterials. In this study, a brief histological analysis focusing on C. reniformis collagen spatial distribution and a comprehensive comparative analysis between collagen isolated from ectosome and choanosome are presented. The isolated collagen characterization was based on isolation yield, Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), circular dichroism (CD), SDS-PAGE, dot blot, and amino acid composition, as well as their cytocompatibility envisaging the development of future biomedical applications. An isolation yield of approximately 20% was similar for both sponge parts, as well as the FTIR, CD, and SDS-PAGE profiles, which demonstrated that both isolated collagens presented a high purity degree and preserved their triple helix and fibrillar conformation. Ectosome collagen had a higher OHpro content and possessed collagen type I and IV, while the choanosome was predominately constituted by collagen type IV. In vitro cytotoxicity assays using the L929 fibroblast cell line displayed a significant cytotoxic effect of choanosome collagen at 2 mg/mL, while ectosome collagen enhanced cell metabolism and proliferation, thus indicating the latter as being more suitable for the development of biomaterials. This research represents a unique comparative study of C. reniformis body parts, serving as a support for further establishing this marine sponge as a promising alternative collagen source for the future development of biomedical applications. Studies have shown that fruits of plants from the Fabaceae family harbour a diverse community of herbivorous insects and their natural enemies. Despite this observation, we still lack information on the specific interactions within these multi‐trophic communities. Herein, we describe the food web of insects associated with fruits and seeds of Leucaena leucocephala (Fabaceae), an invasive plant in Brazil, and their relationship with plant traits including seed biomass.We found 17 species of insects distributed across three trophic levels. The main herbivore species sampled was Acanthoscelides macrophthalmus (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae, Bruchinae), which was responsible for most of the seed predation and associated with the highest parasitoid biodiversity (N = 10 species). Four other herbivorous species were lower in abundance, including a previously unreported Lepidopteran species with two parasitoids and one hyperparasitoid associated with it.Seeds with more mass promoted an increase in insect abundance, insect species richness, and the number of links and connectivity. We observed two native parasitoid species, Paracrias pluteus and Stenocorse suldamericanos, shift from herbivores on native plants to herbivores on the invasive L. leucocephala, consistent with a potential host shift. However, more investigation is required to ascertain the effects of recent shifts of native insect communities (on native plants) to non‐native ones and their consequences on plant fitness. Our study contributes to the understanding of the dynamics of communities and food webs in unknown systems, specifically in fruits of an invasive plant, and provides information about the influence of different plant traits on these communities. The effectiveness of feed additives delivered through free-choice mineral mixtures (MMs) to grazing cattle remains unclear. Two farm-scale and one in vitro experiment (Exp.) were conducted to investigate the effects of salinomycin and virginiamycin, delivered through an MM, on growing bulls grazing tropical pastures. In Exp. 1, 316 zebu (Bos indicus) Nellore bulls (225 ± 26.7 kg liveweight (LW)) were randomly allocated to four treatments: (1) MM no additives (CON), (2) MM with salinomycin at 1950 mg/kg (SLI), (3) MM with salinomycin at 780 mg/kg (SHI), and (4) MM with virginiamycin at 1950 mg/kg (VGN). Over 123 days, these bulls grazed tropical grasses on pastures of guinea grass, palisade grass, or Bermuda grass. No significant treatment effects were observed for oocyst eggs or ruminal parameters. Bulls fed VGN had higher average daily gain (ADG) compared to CON (p = 0.02) and SLI (p = 0.03) but similar compared to SHI (p = 0.07). In Exp. 2, 308 zebu cross bulls (237 ± 23.0 kg LW) grazed Bermuda grass paddocks and were allocated into two treatments: (1) MM with no additives (CON) and (2) MM containing virginiamycin at 2522 mg/kg (VGN). Cattle fed VGN had a significantly higher ADG (p = 0.007). Exp. 3 tested salinomycin's effectiveness in vitro at different exposure times to MM, revealing no impact of exposure time on short-chain fatty acid production. In conclusion, virginiamycin delivered through free-choice MM can increase grazing beef bulls' ADG by 12% compared with CON, with no clear link to rumen fermentation or coccidiostat effects. A no-tillage system (NT) is an alternative to replace soil management with intense soil tillage and degradation. Our objective was to evaluate the physical–hydric properties of soil under NT for four years after undergoing 13 years of minimum (4NTM) and conventional tillage (4NTC) with reference to continuous NT for 17 years (17NT). The soil bulk density, porosity, storage capacities of water and air, visual evaluation of soil structure (VESS), and saturated hydraulic conductivity were determined. The root dry biomass of soybean, maize, and palisade grass was also measured. NT during four years established after receiving 13 years of tillage did not significantly affect soil properties compared to 17NT, which means that four years of NT reached structural stability similar to continuous 17NT. The VESS scores were less sensitive to identifying soil compaction. Crops have no significative influence on soil properties, but the roots of maize seem to be less sensitive to soil compaction, which is important considering it is in a crop rotation system. The treatments (soil tillage and crop rotation) presented soil compaction below a 10 cm depth, and to our loamy textural class soil, a Bd > 1.60 Mg m−3 restricted soil aeration due to macroporosity < 0.10 m3 m−3. The development of the friction stir channelling (FSC) technology has a potential to revolutionize the manufacturing industry, providing an innovative way to produce continuous sub-surface channels in monolithic components in a single step. However, the process generates heat that can lead to defects and loss of stationarity, affecting the quality of the channels produced and the process' efficiency and control. To address these challenges, a ground-breaking study was conducted using a cooled copper backing plate to adjust the process temperatures and investigate the influence of the temperature on FSC stability. The results of the study showed that the cooled copper backing plate has a significantly higher rate of heat conduction, effectively preventing the processed component from overheating and ensuring that the process maintains its stationarity. When using the steel backing plate, only one combination of process parameters (a rotation speed of 450 rev/min and a traverse speed of 71 mm/min) yielded satisfactory results. Moreover, the use of the cooled copper backing plate allowed for a wider range of process parameters to be employed, resulting in sub-surface channels with higher quality and fewer defects. The 710/71 parameters combination resulted in a lower heat input, while the 900/45 parameters set produced channels with a more rectangular geometry. A rotation speed of 900 rev/min and a traverse speed of 45 mm/min have been shown to be the best choice. This innovative approach to FSC technology represents a major step forward in solid-state manufacturing, envisaging new possibilities for producing longer sub-surface channels with superior quality and greater efficiency. Rothmund-Thomson syndrome (RTS) is a rare, heterogeneous autosomal recessive genodermatosis, with poikiloderma as its hallmark. It is classified into two types: type I, with biallelic variants in ANAPC1 and juvenile cataracts, and type II, with biallelic variants in RECQL4, increased cancer risk and no cataracts. We report on six Brazilian probands and two siblings of Swiss/Portuguese ancestry presenting with severe short stature, widespread poikiloderma and congenital ocular anomalies. Genomic and functional analysis revealed compound heterozygosis for a deep intronic splicing variant in trans with loss of function variants in DNA2, with reduction of the protein levels and impaired DNA double-strand break repair. The intronic variant is shared by all patients, as well as the Portuguese father of the European siblings, indicating a probable founder effect. Biallelic variants in DNA2 were previously associated with microcephalic osteodysplastic primordial dwarfism. Although the individuals reported here present a similar growth pattern, the presence of poikiloderma and ocular anomalies is unique. Thus, we have broadened the phenotypical spectrum of DNA2 mutations, incorporating clinical characteristics of RTS. Although a clear genotype– phenotype correlation cannot be definitively established at this moment, we speculate that the residual activity of the splicing variant allele could be responsible for the distinct manifestations of DNA2-related syndromes. SiOx films, frequently derived from amino silane precursors, have found several applications with high added value. Although frequently used, the deposition of coatings from Tris(dimethyl amino) silane (TDMAS) has been reported to demand considerable amounts of energy, mainly due to the difficulty of oxidizing such compounds. As is well known, Plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD) is able to improve the oxidation efficiency, even under low processing temperatures. Owing to this, PEALD can be considered a very promising technique for the deposition of SiOx coatings. In this work, the deposition of silicon oxide films using TDMAS at 150 °C has been investigated. The effect of the plasma oxidation time (6 to 18 s) and atmosphere composition (pure O2 or O2 + Ar) on the chemical structure, elemental composition, and chemical bonding state of the films has also been evaluated. Increasing the plasma oxidation time in pure O2 resulted in a larger proportion of retained C (Si-CH3), whereas N was preserved in the structure (Si-N). Background: Exercise testing is key in the risk stratification of patients with heart failure (HF). There are scarce data on its prognostic power in women. Our aim was to assess the predictive value of the heart transplantation (HTx) thresholds in HF in women and in men. Methods: Prospective evaluation of HF patients who underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) from 2009 to 2018 for the composite endpoint of cardiovascular mortality and urgent HTx. Results: A total of 458 patients underwent CPET, with a composite endpoint frequency of 10.5% in females vs. 16.0% in males in 36-month follow-up. Peak VO2 (pVO2), VE/VCO2 slope and percent of predicted pVO2 were independent discriminators of the composite endpoint, particularly in women. The International Society for Heart Lung Transplantation recommended values of pVO2 ≤ 12 mL/kg/min or ≤14 if the patient is intolerant to β-blockers, VE/VCO2 slope > 35, and percent of predicted pVO2 ≤ 50% showed a higher diagnostic effectiveness in women. Specific pVO2, VE/VCO2 slope and percent of predicted pVO2 cut-offs in each sex group presented a higher prognostic power than the recommended thresholds. Conclusion: Individualized sex-specific thresholds may improve patient selection for HTx. More evidence is needed to address sex differences in HF risk stratification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Objectives: Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) is a cornerstone of risk stratification in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). However, there is a paucity of evidence on its predictive power in older patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic power of current heart transplantation (HTx) listing criteria in HFrEF stratified according to age groups. Materials and Methods: Consecutive patients with HFrEF undergoing CPET between 2009 and 2018 were followed-up for cardiac death and urgent HTx. Results: CPET was performed in 458 patients with HFrEF. The composite endpoint occurred in 16.8% of patients ≤50 years vs. 14.1% of patients ≥50 years in a 36-month follow-up. Peak VO2 (pVO2), VE/VCO2 slope and percentage of predicted pVO2 were strong independent predictors of outcomes. The International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation thresholds of pVO2 ≤ 12 mL/kg/min (≤14 if intolerant to β-blockers), VE/VCO2 slope > 35 and percentage of predicted pVO2 ≤ 50% presented a higher overall diagnostic effectiveness in younger patients (≤50 years). Specific thresholds for each age subgroup outperformed the traditional cut-offs. Conclusions: Personalized age-specific thresholds may contribute to an accurate risk stratification in HFrEF. A novel procedure for the preparation of various 5‐aminotetrazoles derivatives was achieved using trichloroisocyanuric acid as a desulfurizing agent of thioureas and trimethylsilyl azide in ethyl acetate at room temperature. This methodology provided substituted 5‐aminotetrazoles through a more sustainable reaction using an affordable, safe, stable, and easily handled N‐halo reagent, a safer azide source, and an environmentally friendly solvent. Objective: The clinical relevance of solid/trabecular (ST) growth in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is unclear. In this study, we investigated the impact of any amount of ST growth on tumour characteristics and patient outcomes. Furthermore, we evaluated whether ST growth per se affected patients' prognosis in the absence of aggressive features, namely vascular invasion. Design: We analysed 222 PTC patients followed up for more than 5 years in the Department of Endocrinology of the Instituto Português de Oncologia de Lisboa Francisco Gentil from 2002 to 2020. All PTC cases with any percentage of ST growth were included and compared with PTC without ST growth (1:2). Carcinomas with high‐grade features were excluded. Results: There were 74 PTC cases with ST growth and 148 without ST growth (median follow‐up of 9.3 years). PTC‐ST was associated with larger tumour size (p = 0.001) and increased frequency of vascular invasion (p < 0.001) compared with PTC. However, PTC‐ST did not exhibit a higher incidence of extrathyroidal extension (p = 1.000) or lymph node metastasis (p = 0.433). Despite the significantly higher prevalence of distant metastasis in PTC‐ST compared with PTC (p = 0.043), the significance is lost when the cases with vascular invasion were excluded (p = 0.347). The total radioiodine activity was higher in PTC‐ST than in PTC (p = 0.008). Recurrence rates were similar between groups (p = 0.755). The 10‐year overall survival and disease‐free survival rates for PTC‐ST were 94.6% and 98.6%, respectively, similar to the PCT without ST growth (p = 0.097 and p = 0.333, respectively). There was no evidence of an association between the presence of an ST component (p = 0.201) with the risk of death or recurrence, whereas the presence of distant metastasis significantly increased the risk of these events (hazard ratio 10.14, p < 0.001). Conclusions: The presence of ST growth was associated with several aggressive clinicopathological features. However, the risk of cancer recurrence and death for PTC‐ST were similar to PTC. We describe the diverse community of insect herbivores and parasitoids associated with the seeds and fruits of three sympatric Fabaceae species in Lavras, Minas Gerais, Brazil: Inga vera, Senna multijuga and Leucaena leucocephala.A total of 5353 individual insects, representing 77 different species, were identified via morphology and DNA barcoding. The non‐native L. leucocephala had the least diverse natural enemy community (N = 17 species), while two native species, I. vera and S. multijuga, were more diverse (N = 40 and N = 24 species, respectively).Individuals from the insect order Hymenoptera, a group dominated by parasitoid wasps, were the most diverse recovered from our samples in all hosts. Additionally, individual herbivore and parasitoid species were more likely to be found on a single host, with only four out of the 77 species found in more than one plant species.This includes the generalist agricultural pest herbivore, Lasioderma serricorne, found in two species, and three parasitoids connecting native S. multijuga and non‐native L. leucocephala communities, hinting at recent host shifts.Furthermore, different host plant traits had complex effects on the herbivore and parasitoid communities, where seed number per fruit promoted a propagating effect on the abundance and richness at both higher trophic levels, whereas seed and fruit weight did not.We highlight the importance of including parasitoids in insect community studies because they are highly diverse and provide important ecosystem services. In this paper a new multicommodity flow mathematical model for the Job Sequencing and Tool Switching Problem (SSP) is presented. The proposed model has an LP relaxation lower bound equal to the number of tools minus the tool machine's capacity. Computational tests were performed comparing the new model with the models of the literature. Biodesulfurization is a biotechnological process that employs microorganisms as biocatalysts to remove sulfur from fuels usually at mesophilic conditions, targeting recalcitrant organosulfur compounds without affecting their hydrocarbon structure. One of the bottlenecks hindering its large-scale application is the inhibition of biodesulfurization activity by easily metabolized sulfur compounds, such as sulfates, even at residual concentrations. This increases production costs by requiring high-purity sulfur-free nutrients or complex induction steps to prevent/revert inhibition. The objective of this work was to bypass this limitation and demonstrate that it is possible to produce biocatalysts with biodesulfurization activity using sulfate as the only sulfur source, without employing inducers or genetic manipulation, simply by adjusting the sulfur : carbon ratio in continuous culture. With this goal, the bacterium Gordonia alkanivorans strain 1B was cultivated in a chemostat with a medium containing 10 g L−1 of fructose as the carbon source and different sulfate concentrations (12–50 mg per L SO42−) using Na2SO4. Then the bacteria were employed as biocatalysts in biodesulfurization assays with a recalcitrant organosulfur compound (dibenzothiophene). Under these conditions it was observed that 2.2 mgsulfate gfructose−1 ensured a biodesulfurization activity of 6.1 μmol gDCW−1 h−1, 15% greater than previously reported for this strain with an inducer, without limiting biocatalyst production. This novel procedure was further applied to another biocatalyst, Rhodococcus erythropolis strain D1, validating its wide applicability to other desulfurizing microorganisms. Overall, these results indicate a previously unknown regulation mechanism dependent on relative sulfur concentration, which influences cellular responses and regulates biodesulfurization activity, allowing the use of easily metabolized sulfur sources to produce cost-effective biocatalysts for biodesulfurization. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data from the Sentinel-1 (S1) mission with its high temporal and spatial resolution allows for an automated detection of lake ice break-up timings from surface backscatter differences across South (S), Southwest (SW) and Northwest (NW) Greenland (< 71° N latitude) during the period 2017 to 2021. Median break-up dates of the 563 studied lakes range between 8 June and 10 July, being earliest in 2019 and latest in 2018. There is a strong correlation between break-up date and elevation, while no relationship with latitude and lake area could be observed. Lake-specific median break-up timings for 2017–2021 increase (i.e., are later) by 3 days per 100 m elevation gain. When assuming an earlier break- up timing of 8 days which corresponds to the observed median variability of ± 8 days, the introduced excess energy due to a changing surface albedo from ice to water translates to melting 0.5 m thick ice at the melting point or heating up a water depth down to 35 m by 1 K across the entire surface area of each respective lake. Upscaling the results to 100486 lakes across the regions S, SW and NW which correspond to 64.5 % of all lakes or 62.1 % of the overall lake area in Greenland yields an estimate of 1.8 * 106 TJ additional energy input. Background: New therapies with prognostic benefits have been recently introduced in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) management. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic power of current listing criteria for heart transplantation (HT) in an HFrEF cohort submitted to cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) between 2009 and 2014 (group A) and between 2015 and 2018 (group B). Methods: Consecutive patients with HFrEF who underwent CPET were followed-up for cardiac death and urgent HT. Results: CPET was performed in 487 patients. The composite endpoint occurred in 19.4% of group A vs. 7.4% of group B in a 36-month follow-up. Peak VO2 (pVO2) and VE/VCO2 slope were the strongest independent predictors of mortality. International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) thresholds of pVO2 ≤ 12 mL/kg/min (≤14 if intolerant to β-blockers) and VE/VCO2 slope > 35 presented a similar and lower Youden index, respectively, in group B compared to group A, and a lower positive predictive value. pVO2 ≤ 10 mL/kg/min and VE/VCO2 slope > 40 outperformed the traditional cut-offs. An ischemic etiology subanalysis showed similar results. Conclusion: ISHLT thresholds showed a lower overall prognostic effectiveness in a contemporary HFrEF population.
