Manure is used as a source of nutrients and organic matter for agricultural lands, but its unbalanced use has unfortunately made nitrogen (N) and phosphorous (P) leakage to the environment quite common in Western Europe. One way to optimize the use of manure is variable rate (VR) application, wherein within field spatial variability of soil nutrient provision is accounted for. This work evaluated the economic and environmental benefits of a P-based VR manure application and compared it to an N-based uniform rate (UR) application. An on-line visible and near-infrared spectroscopy sensor was used to collect on-line spectral data from soils in two fields of 7.9 and 5.1 ha with barley and wheat, respectively, in Belgium. A calibration model to predict extractable P (P) in soil was developed by partial least squares regression. Based on the locally predicted P level, the P-fertilizer application rate was calculated. According to P2O5 content in manure, manure application rates were set based on the level of soil P measured with the on-line soil sensor. Based on application maps, a strip experiment was conducted to compare the efficiency of VR and UR treatments. The results showed that P-based VR manure application resulted in almost the same yield as the UR treatment; however, it saved the environment by reducing N by 44 kg/ha and 29 kg/ha, and P2O5 by 18 kg/ha and 12 kg/ha, when applied in the two fields. Since farmers received compensation from the manure providers for allowing the manure to be applied in their fields, the P-based VR manure application using less manure has resulted in a smaller gross margin than the N-based UR method, by which more manure was applied. However, if farmers had to pay for this application (as is the case in some European countries), a P-based VR manure application would result in positive gross margins. In the Vietnamese Mekong Delta, soil quality and crop yield are steadily declining under rice monocultures with three crops per year. The objective of this study was to evaluate the medium-term effects of rotating rice with upland crops and adding organic amendments on rice yield, and to relate this to soil quality. A field trial with split-plot design including two factors and three replicates was carried out from 2017 to 2020, over the course of nine consecutive cropping seasons. Crop rotations and organic amendments were applied as main-plot and subplot factors, respectively. The rotations were (1) rice–rice–rice (R–R–R), (2) soybean–rice–rice (So–R–R), and (3) sesame–rice–rice (Se–R–R), while organic amendment treatments included (i) no amendment (NO-AM), (ii) compost of rice straw and cow manure (RS+CM), and (iii) sugarcane compost (SGC); the composts were applied at a rate of 2.0 t ha−1. The rotation cycle started with the so-called spring–summer (SS) season, followed by the summer–autumn (SA) season and ending with the winter–spring (WS) season. Rice yield significantly (p < 0.05) increased under organic amendments after nine growing seasons (2019–2020 WS), with an increment of 5.1% for RS+CM (7.07 ton/ha) and 6.1% for SGC (7.14 ton/ha). Contrary to our expectation, rotations with upland crops did not significantly increase rice yield. Rice yield significantly and positively correlated with an integrated soil quality index–SQI (r = 0.85) for the topsoil (0–15 cm), but not for the subsoil (15–30 cm). The increased availability of soil nutrients (Si and marginally also P) and improved soil physical properties probably induced by organic amendments, along with other soil properties under study, cumulatively attributed to enhanced rice yield. Repeated organic amendments thus becomes an effective management practice in improving soil quality under rice-based systems and could be applied to sustain rice yield in rice-producing regions with similar soil types and climatic conditions. Use of a SQI involving several soil quality indicators enables us to quantify the overall importance of soil fertility for rice yield versus other factors, and it provides an effective means of quantifying the integrated effect of improved management. Moreover, integrating a wide range of soil quality indicators in a SQI ensures its applicability across diverse settings, including different crop rotations and various soil types. With climate change expected to intensify the occurrence and severity of droughts, the control of groundwater table (GWT) depth and capillary rise on topsoil moisture may render a critical driver of biological activity. Consequently, GWT depth could influence topsoil carbon mineralization. In this study, undisturbed 200 cm long soil columns of three different textures (loamy sand, sandy loam and silt loam) were subjected to two artificial GWT depths (–165 cm and –115 cm) in the laboratory. We examined (1) moisture supply by capillary rise along the soil profile and specifically into the top 20 cm soil, and (2) consequently the effect of GWT on decomposition of an added 13C-enriched substrate (ryegrass) over a period of ten weeks, with limited water applications representing a dry summer. A 50 cm difference in GWT depth (–165 cm vs. –115 cm) resulted in different topsoil moisture for the sandy loam (31 % vs. 38 % Water-filled pore space (WFPS)) and silt loam (33 % vs. 43 % WFPS) soils. In the loamy sand soil, GWT-induced moisture differences appeared only up to 85 cm above the GWT. The expected acceleration of mineralization of the added ryegrass under a shallower GWT was not confirmed. In contrast, C mineralization pulses after the wetting events were even higher for the drier –165 cm GWT soils. For the silt loam soil, where capillary rise supply had the largest contribution to topsoil moisture, a lower mineralization rate of the stable Cryegrass pool was also found with shallower GWT. These findings suggest that a potential capillary rise effect of increased topsoil moisture on ryegrass mineralization might have been counteracted by other processes. We postulate that the Birch effect might have been magnified following the rewetting of drier topsoils under deeper GWT levels, ultimately enhancing mineralization compared to where the soil remains consistently wetter under shallower GWT levels. Based on our findings, including the process of texture-specific capillary supply from the GWT can be required to adequately simulate moisture in the topsoil during droughts as they occurred over the past summers in North-West Europe, depending on GWT and texture combination. However, the net effect on topsoil C mineralization is complex and correct simulation of C mineralization may require further integration of specific processes connected to fluctuating soil moisture state, such as the Birch effect. Substantial input of exogenous organic matter (EOM) may be required to offset the projected decline in soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks in croplands caused by global warming. However, information on the effectivity of EOM application dose in preserving SOC stocks is surprisingly limited. Therefore, we set up a 90-day incubation experiment with large soil volumes (sandy loam and silt loam) to compare the mineralization of EOM (13C-labelled ryegrass) and SOC as a function of three EOM application doses (0.5, 1.5, and 5 g dry matter kg-1 soil). In the sandy loam soil, the percentage of mineralized EOM was not affected by EOM dose, while SOC mineralization increased proportionally with increasing EOM dose (+49.6 mg C per g EOM). In the silt loam soil, the percentage of mineralized EOM decreased somewhat with increasing dose, while SOC mineralization increased at a higher rate than in the sandy loam soil (+117.2 mg C per g EOM). In both textured soils, increasing EOM dose possibly supplied energy for microbial growth and enzyme production, which in turn stimulated mineralization of native SOC (i.e. co-metabolism). Higher soil macroporosity at higher EOM doses in the silt loam soil could have contributed to sustaining aerobic conditions (indicated by soil Eh) and promoting SOC priming as shown by positive relationships between pore neck size classes 43–60, 60–100 and >300 μm and SOC priming, suggesting a new mechanism for understanding SOC priming. In sum, this experiment and our previous research suggest that EOM mineralization is mostly independent of EOM dose, but EOM dose modulates mineralization of native SOC. These findings tentatively indicate that using larger EOM doses could help preserve more of added EOM-C in silt loam soils, but longer-term confirmation in the field will firstly be required before we could draw any conclusion for soil C management. The untapped potential for carbon sequestration in agricultural soils represents one of the most cost-effective tools for climate change mitigation. Increasing soil organic matter also brings other agronomic benefits such as improved soil structure, enhanced water-and-nutrient-retention capacity, and biological activity. Broadly, soil organic carbon storage is achieved by increasing carbon inputs (plant residues and organic amendments) and reducing carbon outputs (soil loss mechanisms, decomposition). With a focus on carbon inputs—more specifically, organic amendments—as leverage to increase soil organic carbon, we compared the respiration rates and carbon storage of incubated soil cores amended with maize straw, manure, two digestates and the solid fraction of digestate. Using the variation in the natural 13C abundance found in C4 and C3 plants as a tracer, we were able to partition the CO2 emissions between the exogenous organic matter materials elaborated from maize (C4) and native soil organic carbon (C3). The addition of digestate resulted in an additional 65 to 77% of remaining organic carbon after 92 days. The digestate-derived CO2 was fitted to a second-order kinetic carbon model that accounts for the substrate C that is assimilated into the microbial biomass. The model predicted a carbon sequestration potential of 56 to 73% of the total applied organic carbon after one to two years. For the solid fraction, the results were higher, with 89% of the applied organic carbon after 92 days and a sequestration potential of 86%. The soil priming ranged from −19% to +136% in relation to the unamended control soil, highlighting a surprisingly wide spectrum of results that warrants the need for further research on soil–digestate interactions. Land use is recognized to impact soil geochemistry on the centennial to millennial timescale, with implications for the distribution and stability of soil organic carbon (SOC). Young volcanic soils in tropical areas are subject to much faster pedogenesis, noticeable already on the centennial or even decadal timescale. As land use is a recognized factor for soil formation, it is thus conceivable that even relatively recent land use conversion in such areas would already bear a significant impact on the resulting formed soils., e.g., in terms of content of pedogenic oxides. Very scarce observational evidence exists, so such indirect implications of land use on SOC cycling are largely unknown. We here investigated SOC fractions, substrate-specific mineralization (SOC or added plant residue), and net priming of SOC as a function of forest or agricultural land use on Indonesian volcanic soils. The content of oxalate-extracted Al (Alo) correlated well with organic carbon (OC) associated with sand-sized aggregates, particularly in the subsoil. The proportion of SOC in sand-sized ultrasonication-resistant (400 JmL-1) aggregates was also higher in agricultural land use compared to pine forest land use, and a likewise contrast existed for Alo. These combined observations suggest that enhanced formation of Al (hydr)oxides promoted aggregation and physical occlusion of OC. This was, importantly, also consistent with a relatively lesser degradability of SOC in the agricultural sites, though we found no likewise difference in degradability of added 13C -labeled ryegrass or in native SOC priming between the pine forest and agricultural land uses. We expected that amorphous Al content under agricultural land use would mainly have promoted mineral association of SOC compared to under pine forest land use but found no indications for this. Improved small-scale aggregation of tropical Andosols caused by conversion to agriculture and high carbon input via organic fertilizer may thus partially counter the otherwise expectable decline of SOC stocks following cultivation. Such indirect land use effects on the SOC balance appeared relevant for correct interpretation and prediction of the long-term C balance of (agro)ecosystems with soil subject to intense development, like the here-studied tropical Andosols. The occurrence and spread of invasive woody species are a truly global phenomenon, but tropical regions seem to be particularly vulnerable due to high rates of soil degradation in combination with climate change, and limited resources for containment. There is increasing awareness that complete eradication programs are often not effective. The existence of many "controversial species," i.e., species with both negative and positive impacts, renders decision-making processes for management exceedingly complex. By providing a very extensive overview of the current state of knowledge on impacts and containment strategies of invasive woody species, we aim to help underpin such decisions. We discuss both negative impacts and potential benefits of invasive woody species, focusing on the two most important ones, namely animal fodder production and the positive impacts on soil functioning and soil quality. Invasive woody species can positively impact livestock production (1) indirectly by improving pasture quality because of improved soil quality and functioning, and (2) directly by supplying a high-quality protein component for animal fodder. Invasive woody species increase soil carbon sequestration and nitrogen and phosphorus availability depending on the density of the invader, its capacity to fix nitrogen, the quantity and quality of its litter, and the direct interactions between its roots and the soil microbial community. The balance between potential benefits and risks depends to a large extent on the interaction with the local environment (climate, soil, vegetation, and animals) and the socioeconomic context of each region. When an invasion process starts because there is no local predator, then management can target eradication or very strict containment. If the invasion is the result of strong disturbance of the ecosystem, then intensive but well-thought management of the invasive species would be the choice to be made, as this may help to restore the ecosystem. The addition of exogenous organic matter (EOM) generally stimulates microbial activity and shapes soil structure, likely with stronger effects at a higher application dose. It is not known, however, if and how the application dose of EOM would impact its own mineralisation and that of native soil organic carbon (SOC) by such mediation of soil pore network structure. In 90-day soil incubation experiments, we compared mineralisation of ± 2 cm pieces of 13C-labelled ryegrass as EOM reference at two doses (0.5 g kg−1 vs. 5 g kg−1) and mineralisation of SOC in sandy loam and silt loam soils that were initially subjected to different degrees of disturbance, namely soil sieving at < 2 mm and < 10 mm. We found that the high EOM dose-induced mesoporosity (i.e. vol% increase of pore neck class > 300 μm class by 130% vs. unamended control) and macroporosity (i.e. EOM doses 0.5 g kg−1 and 5 g kg−1 increased the vol% of the 60–100 μm class by 80 and 120% vs. unamended control) formation in the sandy loam soil, whereas the porosity in the silt loam soil remained unaffected. The % of EOM mineralised was independent of EOM dose and therefore did not relate to the changes in soil pore network structure. However, the observed development of meso- and macropores in the sandy loam soil appeared to be associated with stronger stimulation of SOC mineralisation at increasing EOM dose (30% and 71% more SOC mineralisation at low and high dose vs. unamended control). In the silt loam soil, only the high EOM dose-stimulated SOC mineralisation vs. unamended control (28%) but soil pore network structure remained unresponsive to EOM dose. This suggests that stimulation of SOC mineralisation following EOM addition might also be in part linked to the formation of larger pores in the sandy loam soil, and that this stimulation is not always proportional to EOM dose. Anaerobic decomposition of organic carbon (OC) in submerged rice paddies is coupled to the reduction of alternative soil electron acceptors, primarily Fe 3+. During reductive dissolution of Fe 3+ from pedogenic oxides, previously adsorbed native soil organic carbon (SOC) could be co-released into solution. Incorporation of crop residues could hence indirectly, i.e. through the stimulation of microbially mediated Fe 3+ reduction, promote the loss of native SOC via enhanced dissolution and subsequent mineralisation to CO 2 and CH 4. Our aim was to estimate the relevance of such a positive feedback during the degradation of added OC, and to investigate the impact of irrigation management on this mechanism and on priming effects on native SOC decomposition in general. In a six-week pot experiment with rice plants, two Bangladeshi soils with contrasting SOC to oxalate-extractable Fe (SOC : Fe ox) ratios were kept under a regime of alternate wetting and drying (AWD) or continuous flooding (CF), and were either amended with maize shoots or not. The δ13 C signatures of dissolved organic C and emitted CH 4 and CO 2 were used to infer the decomposition of added maize shoots (δ13 C = -13.0 ‰) versus native SOC (δ13 C = -25.4 ‰ and -22.7 ‰). Addition of maize residues stimulated the reduction of Fe as well as the dissolution of native SOC, and the latter to a larger extent under CF, especially for the soil with the highest SOC : Fe ox ratio. Estimated Fe-bound SOC contents denote that stimulated SOC co-release during Fe reduction could explain this positive priming effect on SOC dissolution after the addition of maize. However, priming effects on SOC mineralisation to CO 2 and CH 4 were lower than for SOC dissolution, and were even negative under AWD for one soil. Enhanced reductive dissolution of Fe-bound SOC upon exogenous OC addition therefore does not necessarily lead to stimulated SOC mineralisation. Purpose: This study investigated the C and N mineralisation potential of solid fractions (SFs) from co-digestated pig manure after P-stripping (P-POOR SF) in comparison with P-rich SFs, as a means to estimate their organic matter stability in soil. Compost (COMP) and biochar (BCHR) (made from P-POOR SF) were also included in the study as reference biosolids. Methods: The SFs were incubated in a sandy-loam soil under moist conditions to determine production of CO2 and mineral N. At specified intervals, CO2 evolution in the mixtures was measured via the alkali trap method and titration over a period of 81 days, while mineral N was measured using a flow analyser after KCl extraction over a period of 112 days. Results: The various SFs showed similar patterns of C mineralisation (15–26% of added total C in 81 days) that were clearly higher than for COMP and BCHR (6% and 7%, respectively). Temporary N immobilisation was observed in biosolids with a high C/N ratio. The effective organic matter (EOM) of the SFs was calculated based on the C mineralisation data and varied between 130 and 369 kg Mg−1. Conclusions: The SF with a reduced P content had a high EOM/P ratio which is beneficial in areas where P status of the soil is already high. Moreover, the N mineralisation patterns confirm that a high C/N ratio may also reduce risks for N leaching due to temporary N immobilisation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Degradability of organic matter (OM) in soil depends on its spatial location in the soil matrix. A recent breakthrough in 3D-localization of OM combined dual-energy X-ray CT-scanning with OsO4 staining of OM. The necessity for synchrotron-based µCT and the use of highly toxic OsO4 severely limit applications in soil biological experiments. Here, we evaluated the potential of alternative staining agents (silver nitrate, phosphomolybdenic acid (PMA), lead nitrate, lead acetate) to selectively enhance X-ray attenuation and contrast of OM in CT volumes of soils containing specific mineral soil particle fractions, obtained via lab-based X-ray µCT. In comparison with OsO4, administration of Ag+ and Pb2+ resulted in insufficient contrast enhancement of OM versus fine silt (< 20 µm) or clay (< 2 µm) mineral particles. The perfusion procedure used in this work induced changes in soil structure. In contrast, PMA staining resulted in a selective increase of OM's attenuation contrast, which was comparable to OsO4. However, OM discrimination from other soil phases remained a challenge. Further development of segmentation algorithms accounting for grey value patterns and shape of stained particulate OM may enable its automated identification. If successful in undisturbed soils, PMA staining may form an alternative to OsO4 in non-synchrotron based POM detection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Evidence is accumulating that belowground crop residues contribute more efficiently to the build‐up and maintenance of native soil organic carbon (SOC) than aboveground plant parts. We corroborated previous testing of the hypothesis that root‐C would preferentially accumulate in soil microaggregates, where it is physically protected against microbially mediated decomposition. In three European field trials with C3 to C4 crop transitions, we compared the content of maize‐C (Zea mays L.) in soil from rotations with grain maize (MG) or silage maize (MS) (i.e. with incorporation of roots and shoots or roots only). After decades of maize cultivation, SOC content did not differ within three out of four MG–MS pairs, although obviously larger amounts of shoot biomass were added to soil in the case of MG. We found that relative contribution of roots was on average 3.5 times more than shoots to the build‐up of SOC per equivalent mass of residue C added to soils. Preferential occlusion of root‐C as silt‐sized intra‐microaggregate particulate organic matter (iPOM) was not observed. There were much larger effects from shoot incorporation on maize‐C in the >53‐μm fraction and free silt and clay. Storage of root‐C as sand‐sized iPOM was not quantified here, but first estimates suggested that physical entrapment at this level could only partly explain the longevity of root‐C in soil. We reconfirm the relative stability of root‐C in soil, but do not conclude that this stems from preferential physical entrapment over shoot‐C. Future work should investigate the cause of preferential root‐C association with the clay‐sized fraction and if this occurs before or after microbial processing. Soil moisture strongly affects the balance between nitrification, denitrification and N2O reduction and therefore the nitrogen (N) efficiency and N losses in agricultural systems. In rice systems, there is a need to improve alternative water management practices, which are designed to save water and reduce methane emissions but may increase N2O and decrease nitrogen use efficiency. In a field experiment with three water management treatments, we measured N2O isotope ratios of emitted and pore air N2O (δ15N , δ18O and site preference, SP) over the course of 6 weeks in the early rice growing season. Isotope ratio measurements were coupled with simultaneous measurements of pore water NO3- , NH4+ , dissolved organic carbon (DOC), water-filled pore space (WFPS) and soil redox potential (Eh) at three soil depths. We then used the relationship between SP × δ18O - N2O and SP × δ15N - N2O in simple two end-member mixing models to evaluate the contribution of nitrification, denitrification and fungal denitrification to total N2O emissions and to estimate N2O reduction rates. N2O emissions were higher in a dry-seeded + alternate wetting and drying (DS-AWD) treatment relative to water-seeded + alternate wetting and drying (WS-AWD) and water-seeded + conventional flooding (WS-FLD) treatments. In the DS-AWD treatment the highest emissions were associated with a high contribution from denitrification and a decrease in N2O reduction, while in the WS treatments, the highest emissions occurred when contributions from denitrification/nitrifier denitrification and nitrification/fungal denitrification were more equal. Modeled denitrification rates appeared to be tightly linked to nitrification and NO3- availability in all treatments; thus, water management affected the rate of denitrification and N2O reduction by controlling the substrate availability for each process (NO3- and N2O), likely through changes in mineralization and nitrification rates. Our model estimates of mean N2O reduction rates match well those observed in 15N fertilizer labeling studies in rice systems and show promise for the use of dual isotope ratio mixing models to estimate N2 losses. Mineral nitrogen (N) availability to heterotrophic micro-organisms is known to impact organic matter (OM) decomposition. Different pathways determining the N accessibility depend to a large extent on soil structure. Contact between soil mineral and OM substrate particles can facilitate N transport toward decomposition hot spots. However, the impact of soil structure on N availability to microbes and thus heterotrophic microbial activity and community structure is not yet fully understood. We hypothesized that carbon mineralization (Cmin) from low-N substrate would be stimulated by increased N availability caused by closer contact with soil particles or by a higher moisture level, enhancing potential for N-diffusion. Under opposite conditions retarded heterotrophic activity and a dominance of fungi were expected. A 128-days incubation experiment with CO2 emission monitoring from artificially reconstructed miniature soil cores with contrasting soil structures, viz. high or low degree of contact between soil particles, was conducted to study impacts on heterotrophic activity. The soil cores were subjected to different water filled pore space percentages (25 or 50% WFPS) and amended with either easily degradable OM high in N (grass) or more resistant OM low in N (sawdust). X-ray μCT image processing allowed to quantify the pore space in 350 μm around OM substrates, i.e., the microbial habitat of involved decomposers. A lower local porosity surrounding sawdust particles in soils with stonger contact was confirmed, at least at 25% WFPS. Mineral N addition to sawdust amended soils with small particle contact at 25% WFPS resulted in a stimulated respiration. Cmin in the latter soils was lower than in case of high particle contact. This was not observed for grass substrate particles or at 50% WFPS. The interactive effect of substrate type and soil structure suggests that the latter controls Cmin through mediation of N diffusion and in turn N availability. Phospholipid fatty acid did not reveal promotion of fungal over bacterial biomarkers in treatments with N-limited substrate decomposition. Combining X-ray μCT with tailoring soil structure allows for more reliable investigation of effects on the soil microbial community, because as also found here, the established soil pore network structure can strongly deviate from the intended one. Soil moisture strongly affects the balance between nitrification, denitrification and N2O reduction and therefore the nitrogen (N) efficiency and N losses in agricultural systems. In rice systems, there is a need to improve alternative water management practices, which are designed to save water and reduce methane emissions, but may increase N2O and decrease nitrogen use efficiency. In a field experiment with three water management treatments, we measured N2O isotopocule signatures (δ15N, δ18O and site preference, SP) of emitted and pore air N2O over the course of six weeks in the early rice growing season. Isotopocule measurements were coupled with simultaneous measurements of pore water NO3-, NH4+, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), water filled pore space (WFPS) and soil redox potential (Eh) at three soil depths. We then used the relationship between SP x δ18O-N2O and SP x δ15N-N2O in simple two endmember mixing models to evaluate the contribution of nitrification, denitrification, fungal denitrification to total N2O emissions and to estimate N2O reduction rates. N2O emissions were higher in a dry-seeded + alternate wetting and drying (DS-AWD) treatment relative to water-seeded + alternate wetting and drying (WS-AWD) and water-seeded + conventional flooding (WS-FLD) treatments. In the DS-AWD treatment the highest emissions were associated with a high contribution from denitrification and a decrease in N2O reduction; while in the WS treatments, the highest emissions occurred when contributions from denitrification/nitrifier-denitrification and nitrification/fungal denitrification were more equal. Modeled denitrification rates appeared to be tightly linked to nitrification and NO3- availability in all treatments, thus water management affected the rate of denitrification and N2O reduction by controlling the substrate availability for each process (NO3- and N2O), likely through changes in mineralization and nitrification rates. Our model estimates of mean N2O reduction rates match well those observed in 15N fertilizer labeling studies in rice systems and show promise for the use of dual isotopocule mixing models to estimate N2 losses. The hazard for recurring food insecurity in the Sahel is largely affected by insufficient biomass productivity of degraded, marginal lands. In general, water and soil conservation (WSC) techniques are believed to tackle the deterioration of soil quality by enhancing soil hydraulic properties, soil life, and soil organic carbon (SOC) content, but this beneficial effect on soil quality is hardly ever quantified in WSC research. This study therefore evaluates the effect of WSC on soil chemical, physical, and biological quality indicators by means of an in situ experiment, which was installed in 2011 nearby Sadoré, Niger. The treatments include the following: zaï + manure (Z), demi-lunes + manure, scarification + manure, control + manure, and control. WSC increases grain yields up to 0·7 ± 0·2 Mg ha−1 on degraded, marginal lands, which is similar to yields produced on fertile lands in the area. Nevertheless, a trade-off between biomass production and SOC accumulation was observed. After three growing seasons, SOC was found to rise significantly for the treatments provided with manure, from ±2·5 to ±5 g kg−1, but the increase was lowest for Z, which produced the highest yields. WSC also showed significantly elevated nematode counts but did not considerably affect other soil chemical and soil physical properties. Hence, on the short term, WSC does not improve soil quality, as was widely proclaimed. Therefore, future research should include the assessment of long-term WSC effects and the evaluation of integrated management combining WSC with alternative, yield-enhancing strategies. To understand the roles of nematodes in organic matter (OM) decomposition, experimental setups should include the entire nematode community, the native soil microflora, and their food sources. Yet, published studies are often based on either simplified experimental setups, using only a few selected species of nematode and their respective prey, despite the multitude of species present in natural soil, or on indirect estimation of the mineralization process using O2 consumption and the fresh weight of nematodes. We set up a six-month incubation experiment to quantify the contribution of the entire free living nematode community to carbon (C) mineralization under realistic conditions. The following treatments were compared with and without grass-clover amendment: defaunated soil reinoculated with the entire free living nematode communities (+Nem) and defaunated soil that was not reinoculated (-Nem). We also included untreated fresh soil as a control (CTR). Nematode abundances and diversity in +Nem was comparable to the CTR showing the success of the reinoculation. No significant differences in C mineralization were found between +Nem and -Nem treatments of the amended and unamended samples at the end of incubation. Other related parameters such as microbial biomass C and enzymatic activities did not show significant differences between +Nem and -Nem treatments in both amended and unamended samples. These findings show that the collective contribution of the entire nematode community to C mineralization is small. Previous reports in literature based on simplified experimental setups and indirect estimations are contrasting with the findings of the current study and further investigations are needed to elucidate the extent and the mechanisms of nematode involvement in C mineralization. Four biochar types, produced by slow pyrolysis of poultry litter (PL) and pine chips (P) at 400 or 500 °C, were added to two adjacent soils with contrasting soil organic matter (SOM) content (8.9 vs. 16.1 g C kg−1). The N mineralization rate was determined during 14-week incubations and assessments were made of the microbial biomass C, dehydrogenase activity, and the microbial community structure (PLFA-extraction). The addition of PL biochars increased the net N mineralization (i.e., compared to the control treatment) in both soils, while for treatments with P biochars net N immobilization was observed in both soils. Increasing the pyrolysis temperature of both feedstock types led to a decrease in net N mineralization. The ratio of Bacterial to Fungal PLFA biomarkers also increased with addition of biochars, and particularly in the case of the 500 °C biochars. Next to feedstock type and pyrolysis temperature, SOM content clearly affected the assessed soil biological parameters, viz. net N mineralization or immobilization, MBC and dehydrogenase activity were all greater in the H soil. This might be explained by an increased chance of physical contact between the microbial community activated by SOM mineralization upon incubation and discrete biochar particles. However, when considering the H soil's double C and N content, these responses were disproportionally small, which may be partly due to the L soil's, somewhat more labile SOM. Nonetheless, increasing SOM content and microbial biomass and activity generally appears to result in greater mineralization of biochar. The carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) mineralisation rates of five digestates were studied and compared with pig slurry, compost, and a solid fraction of digestate in aerobic incubation experiments. The objective was to identify the most relevant drivers of C and N mineralisation based on the physicochemical properties of the products. Net organic nitrogen mineralisation of digestates (Nmin,net) was on average 30%, although the range was relatively wide, with digestate from pig manure (39%) reaching double the value of digestate from sewage sludge (21%). The total carbon to total nitrogen (TC:TN) (r = −0.83, p < 0.05) and ammonium nitrogen to total nitrogen (NH4+-N:TN) (r = 0.83, p < 0.05) ratios of the products were strongly correlated with Nmin,net, adequately mirroring the expected fertilising potential of the products. The digestates had C sequestration values between 50 and 81% of applied total organic carbon (TOC), showcasing their potential to contribute to C build-up in agricultural soils. The carbon use efficiency of the amended soils was negatively correlated with dissolved organic carbon (DOC) (r = −0.75, p < 0.05) suggesting that catabolic activities were promoted proportionately to the DOC present in these products. Ratios of DOC:TOC (r = −0.88, p < 0.01) and TC:TN (r = 0.92, p < 0.01) were reliable predictors of the fraction of C that would remain one year after its incorporation and thus could be used as simple quality parameters to denote the C sequestration potential of digestates prior to their use in the field. Conservation agriculture (CA) characterised by minimal soil disturbance, permanent soil surface cover by dead or living plants and crop rotations is one way of achieving higher soil organic carbon (C) in agricultural fields. Sandy loam and loamy soil samples from zero tillage (ZT) and conventional tillage (CT) plots were taken from farmers' fields during the dry season in August 2006. Soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil organic nitrogen (SON), microbial biomass carbon (MB-C) and microbial biomass nitrogen (MB-N), C mineralization and SOC distribution in particle size fractions in 0-20 cm layer were evaluated. Forty eight farmers' fields were randomly sampled at four different locations in Central and Northern Malawi, representing ZT plots maintained for a different number of years, and ten fields under CT with similar soil type and crop grown were selected. SOC and SON in ZT fields were 44 and 41 % (4 years ZT) and 75 and 77 % (5 years ZT) higher, respectively, than CT plots. MB-C and MB-N in ZT fields were 16 and 44 % (4 years ZT) and 20 and 38 % (5 years ZT) higher, respectively, than CT plots. However, MB-C and MB-N in ZT fields were 27 and 25 % (2 years ZT) and 17 and 9 % (3 years ZT) lower than in CT plots. The proportion of the total organic C as microbial biomass C was relatively higher under CT than ZT treatments. The higher SOC and MB-C content in the ZT fields resulted in 10, 62, 57 % higher C mineralization rate in ZT plots of 3, 4 and 5 years of loamy sand soils and 35 % higher C mineralization rate in ZT plot of 2 years than CT of sandy loam soils in undisturbed soils in the laboratory. Simulating plough from the undisturbed soils that were used for C mineralization experiment resulted in linear curves indicating that all organic C was already depleted during the first incubation period. The relative distribution of soil organic matter (SOM) in silt and clay size fractions was strongly correlated ( r = 0.907 and P ≤ 0.01) with silt percentages. Easily degradable carbon pool (C) was correlated ( r = 0.867 and P ≤ 0.05) with organic carbon in sand size fraction. In developing viable conservation agriculture practices to optimize SOC content and long-term sustainability of maize production systems, priority should be given to the maintenance of C inputs, crop rotations and associations and also to reduced soil disturbance by tillage. Termites can play a localized prominent role in soil nutrient availability and cycling because mound materials are often enriched in nutrients relative to surrounding soil. Mound materials may thus prove to be useful amendments, though evidently mound spatial arrangement needs to be considered as well. Furthermore, it is not known if gradients of soil properties exist from termite mound to interspace sites. Studying both aspects would be required to decide whether spreading of mounds or spatially differentiated management of surrounding crop to accommodate soil fertility gradients would be valid nutrient-management strategies. Mound abundance and mass were estimated at 9 and 4 mounds ha−1, representing 38.9 and 6.3 t ha−1 on Nitisols and Vertisols, respectively. Soil physical and chemical properties were measured on samples collected from internal and external parts of mounds and adjacent soils at 0.5, 1 and 10 m away from mounds. In general, termite mounds were enriched in plant nutrients and SOC on Vertisols but not on Nitisols. Termite mounds constituted only 0.3 to 1.3% of the 0–15 cm SOM stock on a per ha basis but nevertheless the immediate vicinity of termite mounds was a relative fertile hotspot. Hence, under the studied condition, we suggest spatial arrangement of crop around termite mounds according to soil fertility gradient and spatially differentiated nutrient management strategies. Our result suggests recommendation of termite mound spreading for soil nutrient amendment has to consider plant nutrient stock in termite mounds on per ha basis besides their nutrient enrichment. Interesting topics for future investigation would be growth experiment for different crops with mound materials treatment. Nutrient dynamics in wetland ecosystems are largely controlled by soil moisture content. Therefore, the influence of soil moisture content on N mineralization should be explicitly taken into account in hydro-ecological models. The aim of this research was to establish relationships between N mineralization and soil moisture content in loamy to silty textured soils of floodplain wetlands in central Belgium. Large undisturbed soil cores were taken, incubated for 3 months under various moisture contents, and zero order and first order N mineralization rates were calculated. We used the percentage water-filled pore space (WFPS) as an expression of soil moisture because it is a better index for aeration dependent biological processes than volumetric moisture content or water retention. The relationship between the N mineralization rate and %WFPS was described by a Gaussian model. The optimum WFPS for N mineralization ranged between 57% and 78%, with a mean of 65% - 6% WFPS. Expected annual net N mineralization rates at field temperature (9.7°C) and at optimal moisture content varied between 30 and 186 kg N ha-1 (0-15 cm depth) year-1, with a mean of 110 ± 42 kg N ha-1 (0-15 cm) year-1. The mean N turnover rate amounted to 2.3 ± 1.1 g N 100 g-1 N year-1. Unusually high SOC levels have been reported for sandy cropland soils in North-Western Europe. A potential link with their general heathland land-use history was investigated by comparing two soil pairs of relict heathland and cultivated former heathland in the Belgian sandy region. A sequential chemical fractionation yielded similar sizes in corresponding SOM fractions between the heathland and cropland soils (i.e. NaOCl resistant: 12.3–15.0 g C kg−1 and NaOCl + HF resistant: 2.6–5.3 g C kg−1). Higher amounts of clay sized N in the cropland plots can be attributed to N additions from mineral fertilizers and animal manure. Temperature resolved Pyrolysis Field Ionization Mass Spectroscopy analysis showed that the composition of both relict heathland and cultivated soils was surprisingly similar, in spite of over 60 years of intense cropland management. The mass spectra of SOM in both heathland-cropland soil pairs investigated was dominated by signals from lipids, alkylaromatics and sterols. The accumulation of this SOM rich in aliphatics was logically linked to the high input of lipids, long-chain aliphatics and sterols from heathland vegetation and the low soil pH and microbial activity. Based on the relatively high OC surface loadings of HF-extractable OM (13–44 mg C m−2 Fe and 1.2–2.3 mg C m−2 clay), direct organo-mineral bonds between OM and Fe-oxides or clay minerals seem to be only partly involved as a stabilization mechanism in these soils. The distinct bimodal shape of the thermograms indicates that OM-crosslinking could furthermore contribute substantially to SOM stabilization in these soils. This study therefore corroborates the previously proposed view that lipids may be bound in networks of alkylaromatics, the structural building blocks of OM macromolecules. Renewed interest in temporal soil organic carbon (SOC) stock changes has stressed the importance of reliable methods for quantitative assessment of organic compound (OC) content. Particularly with the establishment of modern dry-combustion analyzers, which are replacing the traditional wet-oxidation methods, the need for correct relationships between both is of crucial importance for comparison of past and current SOC data in long-term SOC stock change studies. Dry combustion with a Variomax CNS-analyzer was the standard to evaluate three other methods for Belgian agricultural soils. Excellent linear relationships were found with the Walkey and Black method and the Springer and Klee method, whereas a Shimadzu TOC-analyzer slightly underestimated the OC content. Precision of the investigated methods was comparable and tended to be dependent on the sample size used for measurement. The OC oxidation efficiency of the most widely applied method of Walkey and Black for the soils in this study was very close to the generally accepted 75%. Mass loss on ignition at 800°C could be very well related to the soil OC content and the clay content. The traditional factor of 1.724 used to convert OC measurements to organic matter percentages is not valid for the investigated soils, which demonstrates that rather regional-specific factors (in this study 1.911) should be determined and adopted. We examined the effects of 10 yr of reduced tillage (RT) management, compared with conventional tillage (CT), on the chemical composition of soil organic matter (SOM) using a combination of physical fractionation and pyrolysis-field ionization mass spectroscopy (Py-FIMS). Surface soil samples (0-10 cm), which were collected from two adjacent CT and RT managed fields, were separated into particulate organic matter (POM) fractions and sand, silt, and clay size separates. Higher amounts of C (77%) and N (64%) were observed in all size separates of the RT soil and, in particular, the proportion of intramicroaggregate POM was two times as large as in the CT soil. The Py-FIMS spectra showed that larger proportions of free fatty acids, sterols, and N-containing compounds were present in the RT soil's sand fraction than in the CT soil. Similar observations were also made for both free and intramicroaggregate POM fractions. In the silt and clay size fractions, no substantial differences in SOM composition were measured between tillage treatments, except that the RT soil's clay fraction had a higher proportion of N-containing compounds and a lower proportion of alkylaromatics. Ratios of carbohydrate hexose to pentose subunits and of lignin monomers + phenols to lignin dimers confirmed a less decomposed character of the SOM in the silt and clay size fractions of the RT soil. Abstract Evaluations of soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks are often based on assigning a carbon density to each one of a number of ecosystems or soil classes considered, using data from soil profiles within these categories. A better approach, in which the use of classification methods by which extrapolation of SOC data to larger areas is avoided, can only be used if enough data are available at a sufficiently small scale. Over 190 000 SOC measurements (0–24 cm) have been made in the Flemish cropland (the Northern part of Belgium) in the 1989–2000 period. These SOC data were grouped into 3-year periods and as means plus standard deviation per (part of) community (polygons). This large dataset was used to calculate SOC stocks and their evolution with time, without data extrapolation. Using a detailed soil map, larger spatial groups of polygons were created based on soil texture and spatial location. Linear regression analysis showed that in the entire study area, SOC stocks had decreased or at best had remained stable. In total, a yearly decrease of 354 kton OC yr-1 was calculated, which corresponds with a net CO2 emission of 1238 kton CO2 yr-1 . Specific regions with a high carbon sequestration potential were identified, based on SOC losses during the 1989–2000 period and the mean 1999 SOC content, compared to the average SOC content of soils in Flanders with a similar soil texture. When restoring the SOC stocks to their 1990 level, we estimated the carbon sequestration potential of the Flemish cropland soils to be some 300 kton CO2 yr-1 at best, which corresponds to a 40-year restoration period. In conclusion, we can say that in regions where agricultural production is very intense, carbon sequestration in the cropland may make only a very modest contribution to a country's effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
