The structural and superconducting properties of alkali-Bi-based compounds, KBi2 and RbBi2, were investigated over a wide pressure range for the first time. The samples of KBi2 and RbBi2 were prepared using a liquid ammonia (NH3) technique, and demonstrated superconductivity with superconducting transition temperatures, Tc, of 3.50 and 4.21 K at ambient pressure, respectively. The onset superconducting transition temperature, Tconset, of KBi2 decreased slightly; however, it suddenly jumped at 2 GPa and increased gradually with pressure, indicating the presence of two superconducting phases in the low-pressure range. The pressure-dependent X-ray diffraction patterns indicate that the KBi2 sample decomposed into KBi and Bi at pressures higher than 2.5 GPa. Moreover, a discontinuous change in Tconset was observed for KBi2 at 9 GPa, which reflects the decomposition of KBi2 into KBi and Bi. By contrast, the value of Tconset of RbBi2 was almost constant over a pressure range of 0–8 GPa. Thus, the superconducting properties and stability of alkali-Bi-based compounds against pressure were comprehensively explored in this study. In addition, the superconducting Cooper pair symmetry was investigated from the magnetic field dependence of Tc of KBi2 at 0.790 and 2.32 GPa, and of RbBi2 at 1.17 GPa, indicating the exact deviation from the simple s-wave paring model, which may be due to the complex electronic structure of Bi. The results elucidated the exotic superconducting properties of KBi2 and RbBi2 based on the pressure and magnetic field dependence of Tc and verified the chemical stability of KBi2 under pressure. Laying-down gold nanorods (GNRs) of a monolayer immobilized on a solid substrate was realized with a hybrid method, a combination of three elemental technologies: surface modification, electrophoresis, and solvent evaporation. The self-assembly of CTAB-protected GNRs in the solution was induced by 0.05 mM of EDTA. The assembled GNRs were deposited in a laying-down form on the solid surface during the hybrid method. The final coverage was over 71% on the substrate with an area larger than 0.6 cm2. The spacing between the sides of the GNRs was fixed to be 4.6 ± 0.9 nm by the thermal annealing-promoted crystalline packing of the bilayer of CTAB salt-bridged with EDTA. The obtained laying-down GNRs of a monolayer on the gold substrate show a small shift of the transverse LSPR around 550–570 nm (with a width of around 100 nm) and a large red shift of the longitudinal LSPR to be 900–1050 nm (with a width of 500 nm), because of the strong electromagnetic coupling between the GNRs and gold substrate. Therefore it can be used in a wide range of wavelengths for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) applications. The film has a high enhancement factor with 105 for R6G. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Herein, we report the preparation and characterization of BaBi3 clarified by DC magnetic susceptibility, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), and electrical transport. The superconducting properties of BaBi3 were elucidated through the magnetic and electrical transport properties in a wide pressure range. The superconducting transition temperature, Tc, showed a slight decrease (or almost constant Tc) against pressure up to 17.2 GPa. The values of the upper critical field, Hc2, at 0 K, were determined to be 1.27 T at 0 GPa and 3.11 T at 2.30 GPa, using the formula, because p-wave pairing appeared to occur for this material at both pressures, indicating the unconventionality of superconductivity. This result appears to be consistent with the topological non-trivial nature of superconductivity predicted theoretically. The pressure-dependent XRD patterns measured at 0–20.1 GPa indicated no structural phase transitions up to 20.1 GPa, i.e., the structural phase transitions from the α phase to the β or γ phase which are induced by an application of pressure were not observed, contrary to the previous report, demonstrating that the α phase is maintained over the entire pressure range. Admittedly, the lattice constants and the volume of the unit cell, V, steadily decrease with increasing pressure up to 20.1 GPa. A new superconducting sample, BaTi2Bi2O, was synthesized and characterized over a wide pressure range. The superconducting transition temperature, Tc, of BaTi2Bi2O was 4.33 K at ambient pressure. The crystal structure was tetragonal (space group of P4/mmm (No. 123)), according to the X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern at ambient pressure. The XRD pattern was analyzed using the Le Bail method. The magnetic-field dependence of the magnetization at different temperatures was precisely investigated to elucidate the characteristics of the superconductivity. The pressure-dependent XRD patterns showed absence of structural phase transitions up to 19.8 GPa. The superconducting properties of BaTi2Bi2O were investigated under pressure. Tc monotonously increased with the pressure (p) up to 4.0 GPa and saturated above 4.0 GPa. The variations in the Tc–p plot were thoroughly analyzed. The Cooper pair symmetry (or superconducting pairing mechanism) was analyzed based on the magnetic field dependence of the superconductivity at ambient and high pressures, which indicated a sign of p-wave pairing for the superconductivity of BaTi2Bi2O, i.e., topologically nontrivial sign was suggested for BaTi2Bi2O. We prepared two superconducting phases of (NH3)yLixFeSe0.5Te0.5, which show superconducting transition temperatures (Tc's) as high as 20.2 and 29.5 K at ambient pressure, here called the 'low-Tc phase' and 'high-Tc phase'. The temperature dependence of electrical resistance (R) was measured for the low-Tc phase of (NH3)yLixFeSe0.5Te0.5 over a pressure (p) range of 0–14 GPa, and for the high-Tc phase of (NH3)yLixFeSe0.5Te0.5 over 0–19 GPa, yielding double-dome superconducting Tc–p phase diagrams, i.e. two superconducting phases (SC-I and SC-II) were found for both the low-Tc and high-Tc phases under pressure. For the low-Tc phase, the maximum Tc was 20.2 K at 0 GPa for SC-I, and 19.9 K at 8.98 GPa for SC-II. For the high-Tc phase, the maximum Tc was 33.0 K at 1.00 GPa for SC-I, and 24.0 K at 11.5–13.2 GPa for SC-II. These results imply that the maximum Tc value of the high pressure phase (SC-II) does not exceed the maximum value of the SC-I, unlike what was shown in the Tc–p phase diagrams of (NH3)yLixFeSe and (NH3)yCsxFeSe investigated previously. Nevertheless, the double-dome Tc–p phase diagram was found in metal-doped FeSe0.5Te0.5, indicating that this feature is universal in metal-doped FeSe1−zTez. Moreover, no structural phase transitions were observed for either the low-Tc or high-Tc phases of (NH3)yLixFeSe0.5Te0.5 over the wide pressure range of 0–15.3 GPa, and the Tc-lattice constant (c) plots for both phases were recorded to determine the critical point separating SC-I and SC-II. This study investigates the effect of high dissolved oxygen concentrations (DO) on sterlet Acipenser ruthenus maturation. Two groups, each comprising 246 individuals of 8-month-old juvenile sterlets, were reared for 37 months under high DO (group H, mean DO of 11.2 mg/L) or normal DO (group C, mean DO of 7.3 mg/L). Significant differences in body weight were observed between group H (638.7 ± 191.9 g) and group C (572.2 ± 151.9 g) in 12 months (P < 0.05). Growth until 12 months occurred at a specific growth rate of 0.6%/day for group H and at 0.5%/day for group C. The food conversion rate of groups H and C was 5.2 and 5.8, respectively. The gonadosomatic index of group H was 3.1 ± 1.1 for females and 3.1 ± 9.7 for males, and showed no significant difference with group C (3.0 ± 0.7 for females and 2.8 ± 8.9 for males, P > 0.05) in 24 months. Significant differences in follicle diameter in mature females were also observed. Group H included 68 mature females, with an average follicle diameter of 2318.0 ± 175.3 µm, whereas group C included 56 mature females, with a smaller average follicle diameter of 2152.3 ± 287.0 µm (P < 0.001). However, the polarization index in group H (0.194 ± 0.049) was higher than that in group C (0.178 ± 0.042) (P < 0.05). These results suggest that, for sterlet, rearing conditions with high DO can affect growth of both the body and follicle diameter of fish compared to normal rearing conditions. Innovative nanophotonic applications require a technique for generating not a nanometer-scale point but a large-area (mm2-m2) near-field light source. We succeeded in developing a large-area near-field light source that is densely constructed of uniform-size gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) two-dimensionally arrayed with regular interparticle gaps, which has tunable localized surface plasmon resonance bands (600-1100 nm). The near-field excitation properties based on the optical tunability of the AuNP two-dimensional arrays demonstrate that our chemical coating of large-area near-field light sources is widely applicable such as for high-sensitivity optical sensors and high-efficiency solar cells. The self-assembled monolayer (SAM)-modified metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) often exhibit improved chemoselectivity in various catalytic reactions by controlling the reactants' orientations adsorbed in the SAM; however, there have been a few examples showing that the reaction rate, i.e., catalytic activity, is enhanced by the SAM-modification of MNP catalysts. The critical parameters that affect the catalytic activity, such as the supports, nanoparticle size, and molecular structures of the SAM components, remain uninvestigated in these sporadic literature precedents. Here, we report the mechanistic investigation on the effects of those parameters on the catalytic activity of alkanethiolate SAM-functionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) toward silane alcoholysis reactions. The evaluation of the catalytic reaction over two-dimensionally arrayed dodecanethiolate SAM-functionalized AuNPs with different supports revealed the electronic interactions between AuNPs and the supports contributing to the rate enhancement. Additionally, an unprecedented size effect appeared—the AuNP with a 20 nm radius showed higher catalytic activity than those at 10 and 40 nm. Infrared reflection–absorption spectroscopy revealed that the conformational change of alkyl chains of the SAM affects the entrapment of reactants and products inside the SAM, and therefore brings about the acceleration effect. These findings provide a guideline for further applying the SAM-functionalization technique to stereoselective organic transformations with designer MNP catalysts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two-dimensional arrays of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as localized surface plasmon-resonant (LSPR) optics on a transparent conductive layer of indium–tin-oxide (ITO) were successfully fabricated. The typical surface coverage of the 10 nm sized AuNPs is over 87% for on ITO film roughness of ±0.2 nm. The LSPR wavelength is tunable in the range of 622–905 nm. By adjusting the LSPR wavelength to 905 nm at peak, two-photon photochromic reaction of diarylethene derivative in solution phase was demonstrated with irradiation by an incoherent near-infrared light in the range of 0.017–0.033 W/cm2 instead of a laser, thanks to the AuNP two-dimensional array.
