Dicyphus bolivari Lindberg and Dicyphus errans (Wolff) (Hemiptera: Miridae) are naturally widespread in many crops with low-pesticide pressure, where they prey upon several arthropods, including the tomato pinworm Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae). However, their efficacy as biological control agents (BCAs) of this pest needs further investigations. Therefore, in this study the predatory efficacy of D. bolivari and of D. errans on T. absoluta was evaluated on tomato in laboratory and greenhouse trials. Their functional response to different numbers of T. absoluta eggs (up to 350) offered to single females or 5th-instar nymphs for 24 h was assessed in laboratory. Females and nymphs of both predators showed a high voracity and a type II functional response, with an estimated maximum predation rate per day of 189 and 194 eggs for D. bolivari females and nymphs, respectively, and 197 and 179 eggs for D. errans females and nymphs, respectively. The predators showed similar predation rates of T. absoluta eggs on plants in cage trials. However, our greenhouse trial showed that the commonly used Macrolophus pygmaeus (Rambur) (Hemiptera: Miridae), which has a lower individual predation capacity than D. bolivari and D. errans, was more effective in controlling T. absoluta than D. errans and D. bolivari because of its stronger numerical response to densities of T. absoluta and supplemental food than the other two predator species. This shows that long-term greenhouse trials, which include functional and numerical responses to pest densities, are essential to evaluate the efficacy of an omnivorous predator. The native parasitoids Necremnus tutae Ribes & Bernardo and N. cosmopterix Ribes & Bernardo (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) are potential biocontrol agents of the exotic tomato pest Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) in Europe. We investigated the functional response of parasitoid females to different densities of 3rd-instar host larvae (from 3 to 40 hosts offered), as well as some life history traits (longevity, lifetime fecundity, parasitism and host-feeding rate) of N. tutae and N. cosmopterix. In functional response experiments, the rate of attack of both parasitoids was positively correlated with host density, N. tutae and N. cosmopterix showing type III and type II functional response, respectively; the latter species exhibited a higher maximum estimated host-killing rate than the former. Both parasitoids showed high fecundity (> 50 eggs) during their lifetime. The potential application of N. tutae and N. cosmopterix in conservation biological control of T. absoluta is discussed. Dicyphus errans (Wolff) has been shown to be a suitable biocontrol agent for Tuta absoluta (Meyrick). This generalist predator shares various host plants with the exotic pest, and these interactions could be exploited to enhance pest control. Therefore, host preference, survival rate and development times of the predator and prey were investigated on crop and non-crop plant species. Among the tested plants, the favourite hosts were Solanum species for T. absoluta, and herb Robert, European black nightshade, courgette and tomato for D. errans. Tuta absoluta accepted the same plant species as hosts for oviposition, but it never developed on herb Robert and courgette in all the experiments. Based on our results, we would suggest the use of courgette and herb Robert in consociation with tomato and as a companion plant, respectively, which may keep pest densities below the economic threshold. Moreover, the omnivorous and widespread D. errans could be a key predator of this exotic pest, allowing a high encounter probability on several cultivated and non-cultivated plant species. Several species of Heteroptera are responsible for kernel damage in wheat, Triticum aestivum L. (Poaceae), which affects bread-making quality. In Europe, the most noxious bugs belong to the genera Eurygaster (Scutelleridae) and Aelia (Pentatomidae). In the present work, five bug species frequently found in wheat fields in north-western Italy, Eurygaster maura, E. austriaca, Aelia acuminata, Nezara viridula and Carpocoris purpureipennis, were tested in field trials for their capacity to induce wheat damage. The sodium dodecyl sulphate sedimentation volume test was used as the qualitative control. Among the bug species tested, E. maura was the most noxious pest, with C. purpureipennis being almost as noxious as E. maura. In contrast, E. austriaca and A. acuminata, which have been considered the wheat pests of major importance, as well as N. viridula, caused no or only moderate damage to wheat quality. The adoption of an antiserum specifically produced with E. maura salivary glands proved to be effective and specific in detecting bug damage. Groundnut ringspot virus (GRSV) is a tospovirus species transmitted in a circulative propagative manner by several thrips species. Traditionally, GRSV is detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), so this paper describes a rapid diagnostic system for the reliable detection of GRSV in plants and individual thrips by real-time RT-PCR. Watermelon GRSV infected leaves and fruits, and individual thrips (Frankliniella schultzei) collected from flowers on infected watermelons were used in the test. We designed a GRSV TaqMan assay to efficiently detect GRSV in all samples. The method had high specificity and could distinguish GRSV from the other tospovirus species, like Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV), Tomato chlorotic spot virus (TCSV) and Zucchini lethal chlorosis virus (ZLCV). The electroantennogram responses (EAGs) of Macrolophus melanotoma and Macrolophus pygmaeus (Hemiptera: Miridae) exposed to volatile compounds (VOCs) of host and non-host plants were compared. The VOCs were identified by gas chromatography. Hosts and non-hosts eliciting similar EAGs were tested in olfactory assays against plants without a significant EAGs for the two Macrolophus species. No characteristic VOC profile was found for hosts and non-hosts. Terpenes predominated in many hosts and carboxylic acids in non-hosts, but no specific VOCs were characteristic of host plants. Significant EAGs (maximum deflection values in mV) were recorded in plants with very different VOC profiles, both hosts and non-hosts. The EAGs were higher for M. melanotoma than for M. pygmaeus, and were higher for males than for females. In M. melanotoma the EAGs were greater with hosts than with non-hosts, but they were similar in M. pygmaeus. The EAGs were correlated with the concentrations of sesquiterpenes and alcohols in both species. In olfactory assays, M. melanotoma and M. pygmaeus preferred their respective hosts, but they did not discriminate between non-host with and without significant EAGs. According to the results, Macrolophus species are expected to rely on ubiquitous VOCs for the identification of their hosts. The variation in the EAGs between M. melanotoma and M. pygmaeus is attributed to the variation in the proportions of olfactory receptor neurones with different sensitivity to VOCs (e.g. sesquiterpenes). Zoophytophagous predators of the family Miridae ( Heteroptera), which feed both on plant and prey, often maintain a close relationship with certain host plants. In this study, we aimed to select a suitable mirid predatory bug for aphid control in sweet pepper. Four species were compared: Macrolophus pygmaeus ( Rambur), Dicyphus errans ( Wolff), Dicyphus tamaninii Wagner and Deraeocoris pallens ( Reuter). They were assessed on their establishment on sweet pepper plants with and without supplemental food (eggs of the flour moth Ephestia kuehniella Zeller and decapsulated cysts of the brine shrimp Artemia franciscana Kellogg) and on their effects on aphids with releases before and after aphid infestations. None of the predator species was able to control an established population of aphids on sweet pepper plants; however, the predators M. pygmaeus and D. tamaninii could successfully reduce aphid populations when released prior to an artificially introduced aphid infestation. The best results were achieved with M. pygmaeus in combination with a weekly application of supplemental food. Hence, our results demonstrate that the order and level of plant colonization by mirid predators and aphids determines how successful biological control is. Further studies are needed to evaluate the performance of mirid predatory bugs in sweet pepper crops in commercial greenhouses with multiple pests and natural enemies, in particular to understand how increased variation in food sources affects their feeding behaviour and preferences. In several hazel ( Corylus avellana L.) groves in the area of Langhe ( Piedmont, Northwest Italy), many hazel branches suddenly withered, and in some cases, the whole tree died, with heavy economic losses for the farmers. Symptoms of jewel beetle attacks were detected on the trees. Eight Agrilus species were caught by traps from 2007 to 2009 in the surveyed hazel groves; among them, only four species have been known to develop on hazel. On the traps, Agrilus olivicolor Kiesenwetter was the most abundant species, while almost only Agrilus viridis (L.) was sampled by plant beating from 2008 to 2010. Moreover, almost all adults emerged from field-collected hazel wood belonged to this latter species that proved to be the main responsible for the severe attacks on the hazel trees. Agrilus viridis adults emerged from late May to late June, and generally lived until the end of August, while egg masses were observed from late May to late July. The egg parasitoid Oobius zahaikevitshi Trjapitzin was found in all of the investigated groves; adults emerged already from the first egg masses collected on hazel trees in late May-early June. O. zahaikevitshi was able to largely reduce A. viridis populations, with a parasitism rate of more than 50% in some groves. Recent attacks of A. viridis were related to a long period of drought; however, appropriate agronomic practices to minimize the effects of water stress and to conserve natural enemies, such as O. zahaikevitshi, could be more effective to protect hazel groves against boring beetle attacks. In this study we analysed the ability of individual thrips to transmit Tomato spotted wilt virus ( TSWV) in a population of Frankliniella occidentalis over their lifespan as adults (about 10 days). In three experiments a total of 636 thrips were individually tested for their transmission capacity through leaf disc assays using four inoculation access periods ( IAPs). Almost half of the transmitting thrips maintained the capacity to infect leaf discs in each of the four IAPs, confirming the persistent propagative nature of the transmission modality. Nevertheless, a relevant number of thrips (9.25% of transmitter thrips) was able to transmit in the early phases of their adult life (for the first two IAPs), but did not transmit the virus for the remainder of their lifetime. We compared the virus titer of these individuals at the end of the fourth IAP with that of individuals that maintained transmission ability in the four IAPs and showed a statistically significant difference. Dictyothrips betae (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) is the predominant thrips species on Polygonum convolvulus and Polygonum dumetorum plants infected with a recently described tospovirus species, Polygonum ring spot virus (PolRSV). Laboratory transmission experiments (leaf disk assays) with adults collected directly in the field demonstrated the competence of this thrips to transmit PolRSV, although only at a rate of 4%. However, this increased to 16% using newly emerged larvae fed on infected leaves. Frankliniella occidentalis and Thrips tabaci failed to transmit PolRSV in leaf disk assays. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) with specific primers for the N protein and Western blot analysis of adult thrips to detect the N protein confirmed the presence of the virus in D. betae individuals after feeding for at least 5 days on healthy plants. For molecular identification purposes partial sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI), nuclear 28S ribosomal DNA and the elongation factor-1 α (EF-1 α) from D. betae were cloned. COI sequence was also used for deriving a phylogenetic tree, including D. betae. The results confirmed a relationship between this species and tospovirus-transmitting insects of the genus Thrips. Electron microscopy of extracts from diseased Polygonum convolvulus plants from Piedmont (Italy) revealed particles with the morphological features of a tospovirus. Sequencing of the full-length small (S) and medium (M) genome segments indicated that the virus is a member of a new Tospovirus species provisionally named Polygonum ringspot virus. A feature distinguishing it from members of other Tospovirus species was the presence of a very short intergenic region on the S segment lacking the potential for formation of the predicted hairpin structure involved in subgenomic expression. Antibodies made against purified nucleocapsids allowed serological comparison with other tospovirus isolates and revealed a relationship with tomato yellow ring virus, and to a lesser extent, to iris yellow spot virus. Serological tests detected the virus in various locations in northern and central Italy. The nut weevil Curculio nucum (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is responsible for high yield losses in several hazelnut-growing areas of Europe and Turkey, if not regularly controlled using pesticides. The resistance of hazelnut varieties to the nut weevil is known but poorly investigated so far. Thus a 2-year study was carried out to investigate factors affecting C. nucum attacks on two cultivars [Tonda Gentile delle Langhe (TGL), Ennis] and four selections (Daria, 101, B6, L35) in a 15-year-old orchard of northwestern Italy. Nut developmental stages and shell characteristics, such as hardness and thickness, were measured and correlated to the biological cycle of the nut weevil and to the damage by its larvae. During the 2-year sampling, nut weevil adults were collected on all cultivars and selections, but in greater quantities on TGL and Daria, and in lower quantities on 101 and B6. In 2005, by female dissection, mature eggs were observed from late June, when the mean temperature exceeded 18°C. Differences between cultivars and selections were found in nut and kernel development, and in shell hardening; in particular, the kernel development was directly related with the shell hardness. At harvest, the damage varied on average from 2.57% in cultivar TGL to 51.84% in selection 101 of total nuts harvested, so independently of the numbers of the collected weevil adults. These two varieties were the earliest and the latest in kernel development and shell hardening, respectively. Therefore, the susceptibility to nut weevil attacks was strictly related to shell hardening; in fact, a rapid hardening of the shell can hamper the oviposition of C. nucum females. Studies were carried out on a population of Thrips tabaci Lindeman (Thysanoptera: Thripi-dae) from Liguria to assess its sex-ratio and its ability to transmit four tospoviruses: tomato spotted wilt (TSWV), impatiens necrotic spot, tomato chlorotic spot and groundnut ringspot. The population was composed of females only (therefore thelytokous). The first instar larvae were allowed to acquire the virus for 48 h on infected leaves of datura, basil or pepper, and then reared on cucumber until emergence, which medially occurred 9.5 days after hatching. Transmission capacity was checked using two inoculation access periods (lAPs) of 48 h each on pepper leaf disks. T. tabaci was able to transmit TSWV isolate P105 with an efficiency of 16.7% and 4.4% in the first and second IAP, respectively, and TSWV isolate BR-01 with an efficiency of 2.0%. The onion thrips did not transmit the three other tospoviruses. During the IAPs, almost all adults fed on the leaf disks, producing evident silvery scars. The presence of tospovirus nucleocapsids in thrips was assayed by Triple Antibody Sandwich (TAS) and cocktail ELISA. Not all adults that had transmitted TSWV were positive in the tests, whereas some non-transmitter individuals proved positive. The side-effects of three neem formulations (Neem-Amin EC, Stardoor and B.P. 20/S) were tested on the mirid predator Macrolophus caliginosus Wagner in the laboratory. Direct toxicity tests on 1st instar nymphs exposed to fresh dry residues on glass plates at different doses demonstrated that all the products are harmful to the insects with LD[sub 50] values much lower than the maximum recommended rate (1.217, 0.264, 1.083 mg a.i./l instead of 15, 31.5 and 80 mg a.i./l for Neem-Amin EC, Stardoor and B.P. 20/S, respectively). Moreover a reduction of fecundity of the surviving females was assessed with Neem-Amin EC and B.P. 20/S. Persistence tests were carried out on sharp pepper plants treated at the maximum recommended rate. High mortality was recorded when the insects were introduced onto the plants just after the treatment, but no significant differences compared with the controls were observed 5 days after the treatment and any consequence on the fecundity of surviving females was detected. Our experiments showed how azadirachtin can be noxious to M. caliginosus, but the short persistence makes this active ingredient a promising solution in integrated pest management programmes, when a lapse of time is guaranteed between the treatment and the introduction of the predator.
