This article reports on recent empirical research by the author among Church of England curates. Burgess (1999) found that training incumbents did not provide adequate training nor facilitate reflection on ministry. He offered a taxonomy of training incumbent inadequacies, his "pathologies of training." Examining unsolicited comments from curates in a recent questionnaire provides opportunity to look again at these pathologies. These new data provide only partial support for Burgess's pathologies. Implications for the selection, training and evaluation of the performance of those who supervise new ministers indicate that the Church of England could provide more effectively for the support, care and continued learning of those recently ordained. We review our work on the resonant nonlinear response of bulk ferroelectric materials in the frequency region of the optic mode, in particular our attention is focused on the derivation and calculation of the nonlinear optical (NLO) susceptibilities in this region. Properties of the nonlinear susceptibilities both in the paraelectric and ferroelectric phases are briefly described, where in general it is found that the non-vanishing nonlinear optical tensor elements of each susceptibility are governed by resonances in both input and output waves; and the resonance frequencies are temperature-dependent soft modes. The connection of NLO susceptibilities with the subject of morphotropic phase boundary which occurs in various mixed ferroelectrics crystals is also briefly discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
