The current research attempted to address the suitability of bioactive Sambucus nigra extract entrapped in albumin-decorated nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) as a promising "adjuvant" in improving tumour penetration for multiple antitumour therapy. The new hybrid albumin-decorated NLCs were characterised based on, e.g., the particle size, zeta electrokinetic potential, SambucusN entrapment efficiency, and fluorescence spectroscopy and tested for different formulation parameters. The antioxidant activity of NLC-SambucusN was significantly enhanced by a bovine serum albumin (BSA) polymer coating. According to the real-time cell analysis (RTCA) results, NLC-I–SambucusN–BSA behaved similarly to the chemotherapeutic drug, cisplatin, with cell viability for LoVo tumour cells of 21.81 ± 1.18%. The new albumin–NLC–SambucusN arrested cancer cells in G1 and G2 cycles and intensified the apoptosis process in both early and late phases. An advanced induction, over 50% apoptosis in LoVo colon cells, was registered for 50 μg/mL of NLC-II-SambucusN-BSA, a fourfold increase compared to that of untreated cells. RTCA and flow cytometry results showed that concentrations of the hybrid NLC–SambucusN up to 50 μg/mL do not affect the proliferation of normal HUVEC cells. This approach provides insightful information regarding the involvement of phytochemicals in future therapeutic strategies. As the most common psychiatric symptom, depression represents a subject of high interest for the medical community. Background/Objectives: International guidelines consider selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) the first-line treatment of depression. Although having better efficacy and tolerability in comparison to tricyclic antidepressants or monoamine oxidase inhibitors, the diversity and potential severity of adverse effects and interactions manifested by SSRIs, combined with the frequency of prescriptions, lead to the necessity of evaluating real-world data. The aim of this study was to identify and evaluate the drug interactions reported in EudraVigilance (EV) for the six SSRIs representatives that are authorized in Europe: fluoxetine (FXT), fluvoxamine (FVM), citalopram (CIT), escitalopram (ESC), paroxetine (PAR) and sertraline (SER). The entire class of SSRIs was examined as a comparator to identify whether one of the representatives was more prone to reporting. Methods: Descriptive analysis and disproportionality analysis were conducted on data extracted from the EV database. Results: A total of 326,450 adverse reactions (ADRs) were reported for the SSRIs group. Approximately a quarter of these (n = 83,201; 25.46%) were reported for SER and 22.37% (n = 73,131) for PAR. Of the total ADRs reported, 2.12% (n = 6925) represent preferred terms related to drug-drug interactions (DDIs): SER (n = 1474; 22.37%), CIT (n = 1272, 19.86), and FXT (n = 1309, 19.83%). Specific ADRs related to inhibitory activity represent 0.98%, and for potentiating activity, 1.89%. Conclusions: Although representing a small value of the total ADRs, DDIs may be related to severe outcomes. Insulin is essential for treating type 1 diabetes and insulin-requiring type 2 diabetes. Background/Objectives: Diabetes is a widespread condition that can lead to multiple and severe complications. Rapid-acting insulin analogs (RAIAs) and long-acting insulin analogs are prescribed for the effective management of diabetes. RAIAs are expected to be associated with a higher number of dosing errors because of their rapid onset, short duration of action, and the need for frequent dosing, compared to other insulin analogs. There are three approved RAIAs on the market: insulin lispro (LIS), insulin aspart (ASP), and insulin glulisine (GLU). The aim of this study is to evaluate the real-world evidence on dosing errors reported for RAIAs in EudraVigilance (EV), an established pharmacovigilance database, in comparison to other insulin analogs and human insulins. Methods: A descriptive analysis and a disproportionality analysis were conducted. Results: ASP and LIS were associated with high percentages of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) (22% and 17%, respectively), with over 70% of the reports involving serious ADRs. A higher frequency of cardiac and eye disorder ADRs was observed for LIS compared with ASP and GLU. GLU showed a higher frequency of ADRs in the skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders category. LIS dosing errors accounted for 5% of the total number of cases, while dosing errors for ASP and GLU were less than 3%. The most frequently reported dosing errors involved improper dosing (49%). Conclusions: Although there were fewer dosing errors of RAIAs in comparison to other insulins, the severity of the potential outcome highlights the importance of precise dosing and timing. Background/objectives: An increase in the incidence of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) in children has been reported worldwide in the last decade. We conducted a study in a tertiary pediatric gastroenterology unit aimed at analyzing the clinical manifestations, biochemical markers, and endoscopic features of children with EoE in comparison to patients with non-eosinophilic esophagitis. Methods: This is a prospective analysis involving children with symptoms related to esophageal dysfunction, who had esophagogastroduodenoscopies with esophageal biopsies between January 2021 and April 2024 at "Dr. Victor Gomoiu" Clinical Children's Hospital, in Bucharest, Romania. For the analysis, patients were considered in either Group 1, classified as EoE, or in Group 2, classified as reflux esophagitis. Results: Among the total of 72 patients diagnosed with esophagitis, 17 patients (Group 1—study group) were classified as EoE and 55 were classified as reflux esophagitis (Group 2—control group). The sex ratio analysis showed a male predominance in the study group (71% vs. 32%, p = 0.002). The main symptoms were regurgitation, eructation, and nausea. Dysphagia was present in two (11.76%) patients from Group 1. Eosinophilia was more prevalent in the EoE group than in the individuals with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) (10 (58.85%) vs. 10 (18.18%, p = 0.001)), as well as the total IgE (11 (64.70%) vs. 6 (10.9%, p = 0.001)). Conclusions: Pediatric gastroenterologists need to be aware of EoE atypical presentation and perform adequate biopsies, mainly in children with refractory GERD-like symptoms, dysphagia, and food bolus impaction. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) hydrogels are non-immunogenic, low-cost, biocompatible, and biodegradable. In order to avoid toxic cross-linking agents, gellan was oxidized with NaIO4 to obtain new functional groups like dialdehydes for protein-based hydrogel cross-linking. The formed dialdehyde groups were highlighted with FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy. This paper aims to investigate hydrogel films for biomedical applications obtained by cross-linking BSA with oxidized gellan (OxG) containing immobilized β-cyclodextrin–curcumin inclusion complex (β-CD–Curc) The β-CD–Curc improved the bioavailability and solubility of Curc and was prepared at a molar ratio of 2:1. The film's structure and morphology were evaluated using FT-IR spectroscopy and SEM. The swelling degree (Q%) values of hydrogel films depend on hydrophilicity and pH, with higher values at pH = 7.4. Additionally, the conversion index of -NH2 groups into Schiff bases increases with an increase in OxG amount. The polymeric matrix provides protection for Curc, is non-cytotoxic, and enhances antioxidant activity. At pH = 5.5, the skin permeability and release efficiency of encapsulated curcumin were higher than at pH = 7.4 because of the interaction of free aldehyde and carboxylic groups from hydrogels with amine groups from proteins present in the skin membrane, resulting in a better film adhesion and more efficient curcumin release. Some glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs), first used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), have been approved for the treatment of obesity in patients with or without T2DM (liraglutide—LIR, semaglutide—SEM, and tirzepatide—TIR). Social media had an important influence on the off-label use of GLP-1 RAs for obesity, especially for SEM. We analyzed the Google queries related to SEM to assess people's interest in this drug. We also investigated the occurrence of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) by searching the EudraVigilance database (EV) for Individual Case Safety Reports (ICSRs) that reported SEM as the suspected drug and performed a descriptive and a disproportionality analysis. The data obtained for SEM were compared to other GLP-1 RAs. SEM had the highest proportions of searches on Google associated with the term "weight loss" and presented the lowest number of severe ADRs, but it also had the highest number of ICSRs reported in EV. Even though no unexpected safety issues have been reported for it until now, SEM has a hi3gh tendency for overdose reports. The most frequent off-label use was reported for SEM and TIR. Trastuzumab (T) and tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) are among the first-line treatments recommended for HER2-positive breast cancer. More recently, antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) such as trastuzumab deruxtecan (T-DXd) and trastuzumab emtansine (T-DM1) have been authorized, and they represent the second-line therapy in this type of cancer. The present study aimed to evaluate adverse drug reactions (ADRs) associated with T-based ADCs that were spontaneously reported in EudraVigilance—the European pharmacovigilance database. Out of 42,272 ADRs reported for currently approved ADCs on the market, 24% of ADRs were related to T-DM1, while 12% of ADRs were related to T-DXd. T-DM1 had a higher probability of reporting eye, ear and labyrinth, and cardiac and hepatobiliary ADRs, while T-DXd had a higher probability of reporting respiratory, thoracic and mediastinal, blood and lymphatic system, metabolism and nutrition, and gastrointestinal ADRs. The present research found that in terms of hematological disorders, T-DM1 and T-DXd had a higher probability of reporting ADRs than TKIs. Moreover, the data showed that T-DM1 seemed to have a higher risk of cardiotoxicity than T-DXd, while T-DXd had a higher probability of reporting metabolism and nutrition disorders than T-DM1. Background: Our study aimed to explore the way artificial intelligence (AI) utilization is perceived in pediatric medicine, examining its acceptance among patients (in this case represented by their adult parents), and identify the challenges it presents in order to understand the factors influencing its adoption in clinical settings. Methods: A structured questionnaire was applied to caregivers (parents or grandparents) of children who presented in tertiary pediatric clinics. Results: The most significant differentiations were identified in relation to the level of education (e.g., aversion to AI involvement was 22.2% among those with postgraduate degrees, 43.9% among those with university degrees, and 54.5% among those who only completed high school). The greatest fear among respondents regarding the medical use of AI was related to the possibility of errors occurring (70.1%). Conclusions: The general attitude toward the use of AI can be considered positive, provided that it remains human-supervised, and that the technology used is explained in detail by the physician. Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a highly aggressive malignant tumor, and the most prevalent primary malignant tumor affecting the brain and central nervous system. Recent research indicates that the genetic profile of GBM makes it resistant to drugs and radiation. However, the main obstacle in treating GBM is transporting drugs through the blood–brain barrier (BBB). Albumin is a versatile biomaterial for the synthesis of nanoparticles. The efficiency of albumin-based delivery systems is determined by their ability to improve tumor targeting and accumulation. In this review, we will discuss the prevalence of human glioblastoma and the currently adopted treatment, as well as the structure and some essential functions of the BBB, to transport drugs through this barrier. We will also mention some aspects related to the blood–tumor brain barrier (BTBB) that lead to poor treatment efficacy. The properties and structure of serum albumin were highlighted, such as its role in targeting brain tumors, as well as the progress made until now regarding the techniques for obtaining albumin nanoparticles and their functionalization, in order to overcome the BBB and treat cancer, especially human glioblastoma. In this work, the adsorption and photocatalytic properties of ZnO-ZnAl2O4-CuO nanosized porous composites synthesized by the polymer-salt method have been studied. To evaluate the efficiency of adsorption, experiments were carried out on the decolorization of aqueous solutions of the Chicago Sky Blue diazo dye. The adsorption process is divided into two stages, at the first stage, the dye is rapidly adsorbed on the outer surface of the composite particles (kf = 0.0073 min−1), at the second stage, the dye diffuses into the pores of the material (kf = 0.0007 min−1). It was noted that the rate of photocatalytic decomposition of the dye (kf = 0.021 min−1) is higher than the rate of the adsorption process, which indicates the occurrence of photocatalytic decomposition of dye molecules both on the surface of the composites and in the liquid phase. With an increase in the light intensity, the photocatalytic process is significantly accelerated, linearly at low intensities, and at high intensities (I > 100 mW/cm2) the dependence becomes a power law. Amylase is an enzyme used to hydrolyze starch in order to obtain different products that are mainly used in the food industry. The results reported in this article refer to the immobilization of α-amylase in gellan hydrogel particles ionically cross-linked with Mg2+ ions. The obtained hydrogel particles were characterized physicochemically and morphologically. Their enzymatic activity was tested using starch as a substrate in several hydrolytic cycles. The results showed that the properties of the particles are influenced by the degree of cross-linking and the amount of immobilized α-amylase enzyme. The temperature and pH at which the immobilized enzyme activity is maximum were T = 60 °C and pH = 5.6. The enzymatic activity and affinity of the enzyme to the substrate depend on the particle type, and this decreases for particles with a higher cross-linking degree owing to the slow diffusion of the enzyme molecules inside the polymer's network. By immobilization, α-amylase is protected from environmental factors, and the obtained particles can be quickly recovered from the hydrolysis medium, thus being able to be reused in repeated hydrolytic cycles (at least 11 cycles) without a substantial decrease in enzymatic activity. Considering the prioritization of life-threatening injuries in trauma care, secondary dysfunctions such as ventilator-induced diaphragmatic dysfunction (VIDD) are often overlooked. VIDD is an entity induced by muscle inactivity during invasive mechanical ventilation, associated with a profound loss of diaphragm muscle mass. In order to assess the incidence of VIDD in polytrauma patients, we performed an observational, retrospective, longitudinal study that included 24 polytraumatized patients. All included patients were mechanically ventilated for at least 48 h and underwent two chest CT scans during their ICU stay. Diaphragmatic thickness was measured by two independent radiologists on coronal and axial images at the level of celiac plexus. The thickness of the diaphragm was significantly decreased on both the left and right sides (left side: −0.82 mm axial p = 0.034; −0.79 mm coronal p = 0.05; right side: −0.94 mm axial p = 0.016; −0.91 coronal p = 0.013). In addition, we obtained a positive correlation between the number of days of mechanical ventilation and the difference between the two measurements of the diaphragm thickness on both sides (r =0.5; p = 0.02). There was no statistically significant correlation between the body mass indexes on admission, the use of vitamin C or N-acetyl cysteine, and the differences in diaphragmatic thickness. A novel nanoscale approach was developed for the improved cellular internalization of hybrid bovine serum albumin–lipid nanocarriers loaded with piperine (NLC-Pip–BSA) in different tumor cells. The effect of the BSA-targeted–NLC-Pip and untargeted-NLC-Pip on the viability, proliferation, and levels of cell-cycle damage and apoptosis in the colon (LoVo), ovarian (SKOV3) and breast (MCF7) adenocarcinoma cell lines was comparatively discussed. NLCs were characterized concerning particle size, morphology, zeta potential, phytochemical encapsulation efficiency, ATR-FTIR, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The results showed that NLC-Pip–BSA showed a mean size below 140 nm, a zeta potential of −60 mV, and an entrapment efficiency of 81.94% for NLC-Pip and 80.45% for NLC-Pip–BSA. Fluorescence spectroscopy confirmed the coating of the NLC with the albumin. By MTS and RTCA assays, NLC-Pip–BSA showed a more pronounced response against the LoVo colon cell line and MCF-7 breast tumor cell lines than against the ovarian SKOV-3 cell line. Flow cytometry assay demonstrated that the targeted NLC-Pip had more cytotoxicity and improved apoptosis than the untargeted ones in MCF-7 tumor cells (p < 0.05). NLC-Pip caused a significant increase in MCF-7 breast tumor cell apoptosis of ~8X, while NLC-Pip–BSA has shown an 11-fold increase in apoptosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent research, 3D printing has become a powerful technique and has been applied in the last few years to carbon-based materials. A new generation of 3D-printed electrodes, more affordable and easier to obtain due to rapid prototyping techniques, has emerged. We propose a customizable fabrication process for flexible (and rigid) carbon-based biosensors, from biosensor design to printable conductive inks. The electrochemical biosensors were obtained on a 50 µm Kapton® (polyimide) substrate and transferred to a 500 µm PDMS substrate, using a 3D-extrusion-based printing method. The main features of our fabrication process consist of short-time customization implementation, fast small-to-medium batch production, ease of electrochemical spectroscopy measurements, and very good resolution for an extrusion-based printing method (100 µm). The sensors were designed for future integration into a smart wound dressing for wound monitoring and other biomedical applications. We increased their sensibility with electro-deposited gold nanoparticles. To assess the biosensors' functionality, we performed surface functionalization with specific anti-N-protein antibodies for SARS-CoV 2 virus, with promising preliminary results. Background: Endotracheal tube (ETT) is an important risk factor for the development of Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), as it acts as a reservoir for infectious microorganisms and bypasses the host's defenses. One of the preventive measures for VAP is endotracheal tube composition. It has been reported that biofilm formation is reduced by using ETTs coated with pure silver or silver compounds. However, noble metal-alloy ETTs have not been adequately studied. Aims: To evaluate the efficacy of noble metal alloy ETT (coated Bactiguard Infection Protection ETTs) in preventing VAP compared to standard non-coated ETTs in patients requiring ≥ 48 hours of mechanical ventilation and presenting for coma due to drug intoxication. Study Design: Randomized controlled study. Methods: Participants were randomized using sealed envelopes with a concealed 1:1 allocation to either the intervention group or the control group. The intervention group used a noble metal--alloy ETT, while the control group received standard ETT. The primary outcomes were the incidence of VAP (per ventilated patients) and the duration of mechanical ventilation. Results: Initially, a total of 188 patients were assessed for eligibility, and the final allocation group consisted of 180 patients, who were subsequently randomized into the intervention group (n = 97) and control group (n = 83). The incidence of VAP in the intervention and control groups was 27.83% and 43.16% (P = 0.03), and the VAP ratio per 1000 ventilation days was 51.26/1000 and 83.38/1000 (P = 0.01), respectively. The mean durations of mechanical ventilation were 3.2 ± 0.78 in the intervention group and 5.03 ± 1.88 in the control group (P = 0.22). There was no statistically significant difference between groups in terms of mortality and duration of hospital stay. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a term that covers a multitude of techniques that are used in a manner that tries to reproduce human intelligence. AI is helpful in various medical specialties that use imaging for diagnostic purposes, and gastroenterology is no exception. In this field, AI has several applications, such as detecting and classifying polyps, detecting the malignancy in polyps, diagnosing Helicobacter pylori infection, gastritis, inflammatory bowel disease, gastric cancer, esophageal neoplasia, and pancreatic and hepatic lesions. The aim of this mini-review is to analyze the currently available studies regarding AI in the field of gastroenterology and hepatology and to discuss its main applications as well as its main limitations. Photoactive Cu-doped ZnO–ZnAl2O4 ceramic nanocomposites and coatings were prepared by polymer-salt method. The luminescent spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction methods were used for the study the structure, morphology and materials properties. The nanocomposites consist of small hexagonal ZnO and cubic ZnAl2O4 nanocrystals having size about 10 nm. The study of luminescence properties shows that prepared nanocomposites can be used as light down-converters that transfer short-wave ultraviolet (UV-C) radiation into long-wave ultraviolet (UV-A) and visible spectral range. These nanocomposites can be very attractive in photovoltaic applications as spectral down-converters. Also obtained nanocomposites demonstrate the ability to generate chemically active singlet oxygen under UV-A radiation and blue light. The experiments show that Cu-doped ZnO–ZnAl2O4 materials demonstrate antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the Middle Ages, the princely court in the city of Hârlău (in today’s Iași county) was one of the important political and administrative centers of Moldavia, in the middle of the country, on the Moldavian Road that connected the Nordic (Hanseatic) countries to the Black Sea shore. The town of Hârlău (or Bahlovia) developed around the princely courts, where, before May 1, 1384, Margareta-Mușata resided with her sons: Petru I (1375–1391), Roman (1391/2–1394) and Stephen (1394/5–1399). Their successors on the throne of Moldavia: Alexander the Good (1400–1432), Stephen the Great (1457–1504), Bogdan III (1504–1517), Ștefăniță (1517–1527), Petru Rareș (1527–1538; 1541–1546), Alexandru Lăpușneanu (1552–1561; 1563–1568) and other rulers: Radu Mihnea (1616–1619; 1623–1626), Miron Barnovski (1623–1629; 1633), during the first reign, resided in Hârlău, on several occasions, founding various constructions, some quite significant, in this „cradle of the Musatins”. In the Romanian Middle Ages, the Royal Courts of Hârlău included the royal houses/palaces, the church and their annexes, with defensive walls and towers, all in the service of the Principality and the Orthodox Church. The first fortifications of the princely courts in Hârlău, built earlier, are not known, but they must also have had a tower, used for military, social and religious purposes, since members of a princely family resided in them; the strategic position and the surroundings rich in building stone have led to this conclusion. Future archaeological research will need to clarify this aspect. In 1486, Stephen the Great „dismounted the fair of Hârlău” (according to chronicler Grigore Ureche) and built the princely church, „the one made of stone”, „with walls and everything”. Then the stone tower was also built, a statement that does not exclude the earlier existence of another stone tower (end of the 14th century – beginning of the 15th century). Until the 18th century, at least three residences of the princely courts existed in Hârlău. The most important contributions, according to the founders, were made by Alexander the Good, Stephen the Great, Petru Rareș, Alexandru Lăpușneanu and Radu Mihnea. There was a church tower next to the three churches built successively on the same site. Cardiac tamponade is a rare presentation in patients with COVID-19, which may be induced by the associated exacerbated inflammatory response. The onset of cardiac tamponade may be concomitant with the acute phase of the disease or may develop subsequently as a new health condition secondary to the disease. We report four cases of cardiac tamponade that occurred late after the acute phase of the disease. One of them may be considered a post-acute complication of the disease, and three of them may be classified as a new health condition induced by COVID-19. Only two cases had a history of severe respiratory distress due to COVID-19. In all four cases, pericardiocentesis was imposed, and surprisingly, in every case, hemorrhagic fluid was evacuated. In this case, series, immune-mediated etiology is supported by histopathological results, where the main identified feature was fibrous pericarditis with inflammatory infiltrate. In this work, three new polymer aerogels based on 2-hydroxy ethyl methacrylate (HEMA) complexes with Eu(III), Tb(III) and La(III) are prepared and investigated. The polymer aerogels present strong photoluminescence with emissions located in the red, green and blue regions of the visible spectrum. Depending on the water content used during the preparation path, the consistency of the photoluminescent aerogels varies from rigid, regularly shaped monoliths to a flexible, fibrous material with very low density. The morpho-structural investigation was performed by FT-IR, XPS and SEM. Thermal behavior was also evaluated, while steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy, absolute PLQY and lifetime were used for the investigation of their luminescent properties. The impressive photoluminescent emission located in the red, green and blue areas of the visible spectrum is preserved irrespective of the selected porosity. The physicochemical properties of "smart" or stimuli-sensitive amphiphilic copolymers can be modeled as a function of their environment. In special, pH-sensitive copolymers have practical applications in the biomedical field as drug delivery systems. Interactions between the structural units of any polymer-drug system imply mutual constraints at various scale resolutions and the nonlinearity is accepted as one of the most fundamental properties. The release kinetics, as a function of pH, of a model active principle, i.e., Curcumin, from nanomicelles obtained from amphiphilic pH-sensitive poly(2-vinylpyridine)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (P2VP-b-PEO) tailor-made diblock copolymers was firstly studied by using the Rietger-Peppas equation. The value of the exponential coefficient, n, is around 0.5, generally suggesting a diffusion process, slightly disturbed in some cases. Moreover, the evaluation of the polymer-drug system's nonstationary dynamics was caried out through harmonic mapping from the usual space to the hyperbolic one. The kinetic model we developed, based on fractal theory, fits very well with the experimental data obtained for the release of Curcumin from the amphiphilic copolymer micelles in which it was encapsulated. β-blocker poisoning is frequently observed because of its primary use for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. The management of β-blocker toxicity is dependent on the cardiovascular response and the severity of presentation. The present study describes the case of a patient with combined drug intoxication, β-blocker, digoxin, benzodiazepines, acetaminophen and opiates in a suicidal attempt. A 63-year-old female was found somnolent and in a confused state at her residence following intentional poly-drug ingestion. Upon presentation, she was found to be hemodynamically unstable and was thus treated with vasopressors. The toxicological screening performed upon presentation was positive for polydrug ingestion. On day 3, the patient developed chest pain and ST-segment elevation in anterior leads, while transthoracic echocardiographic assessment disclosed a non-dilated left ventricle with moderate dysfunction and akinesia of the apex. Coronary angiogram revealed normal coronary arteries and, subsequently, the diagnosis of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TTC) was suspected. Supportive treatment was initiated with favorable evolution and left ventricular ejection fraction normalization. The management of hemodynamic instability with vasopressors should be judiciously administered in the treatment of β-blocker poisoning, in view of the adverse effects on cardiac functions, including stress cardiomyopathy. This study proposes a feasible approach for the rapid, sensitive, and label-free identification of cancerous cells based on dielectrophoretic (DEP) manipulation and electrical characterization. In this method, the concentration of target cells at the level of customized microelectrodes via DEP is first determined, followed by an electrical impedance evaluation. The study demonstrates the capacity of the methodology to electrically differentiate HT-29 cancer cells from healthy blood cells based on their impedance spectra. Within a higher frequency domain, the electrical impedance of trapped cancer cells was significantly lower compared with the normal ones. In order to evaluate the functionality and reproducibility of the proposed method, the influence of the DEP and EIS (electrical impedance spectroscopy) operating voltages on the electrical characterization of trapped HT-29 cells was analyzed. The selective and rapid detection of tumor cells is of critical consequence for the theragnostic field of tumorigenesis; conventional methods, such as histopathological diagnostic methods, often require a long analysis time, excessive analytical costs, complex operations, qualified personnel and deliver many false-positive results. We are considering a new approach of an electrochemical biosensor based on graphene, which is evidenced to be a revolutionary nanomaterial enabling the specific and selective capture of tumor cells. In this paper, we report a biosensor fabricated by growing vertically aligned graphene nanosheets on the conductive surface of interdigitated electrodes which is functionalized with anti-EpCAM antibodies. The dielectric signature of the three types of tumor cells is determined by correlating the values from the Nyquist and Bode diagram: charge transfer resistance, electrical double layer capacity, Debye length, characteristic relaxation times of mobile charges, diffusion/adsorption coefficients, and variation in the electrical permittivity complex and of the phase shift with frequency. These characteristics are strongly dependent on the type of membrane molecules and the electromagnetic resonance frequency. We were able to use the fabricated sensor to differentiate between three types of tumor cell lines, HT-29, SW403 and MCF-7, by dielectric signature. The proposed evaluation method showed the permittivity at 1 MHz to be 3.63 nF for SW403 cells, 4.97 nF for HT 29 cells and 6.9 nF for MCF-7 cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Metal-containing ionic liquids with general formula [Rmim]+MX3- (R=n-butyl or n-lauryl; M=Zn, Cd; X=Cl, Br) were synthesised and then characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy. The catalytic activity was tested in glycolysis of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) with ethylene glycol (EG) with the main product being bis-2-hydroxyethyl terephthalate (BHET). The following parameters were varied: the catalyst type, the catalyst loading and the molar ratio between PET and EG. For every reaction conversion and selectivity were calculated. The deep eutectic solvent (DES)-based biocatalysis of l-menthol acylation was designed for the production of fatty acid l-menthyl ester (FME) using fatty acid methyl ester (FAME). The biocatalytic reaction was assisted by a lipase enzyme in the DES reaction medium. ւՒ-menthol and fatty acids (e.g., CA—caprylic acid; OA—oleic acid; LiA—linoleic acid; and LnA—linolenic acid) were combined in the binary mixture of DES. In this way, the DES provided a nonpolar environment for requested homogeneity of a biocatalytic system with reduced impact on the environment. The screening of lipase enzyme demonstrated better performance of immobilized lipase compared with powdered lipase. The performance of the biocatalytic system was evaluated for different DES compositions (type and concentration of the acid component). l-menthol:CA = 73:27 molar ratio allowed it to reach a maximum conversion of 95% methyl lauric ester (MLE) using a NV (Candida antarctica lipase B immobilized on acrylic resin) lipase biocatalyst. The recyclability of biocatalysts under optimum conditions of the system was also evaluated (more than 80% recovered biocatalytic activity was achieved for the tested biocatalysts after five reaction cycles). The European Union represents an entity that, due to its institutional architecture and to its modus operandi, poses a challenge to the fundamental concepts of political theory and demands, consequently, their re-evaluation. In this context, the present article represents an attempt to consider the European Union in relation to two long-established concepts of political theory - democracy and legitimacy. At the same time, considering the European Union as a product of voluntary integration at a supranational level, this paper addresses the question of the nature of the European Union, arguing the integration of the European structure in the category of political systems, although it has a series of characteristics that reinforce the assumption that it is neither a state nor an international organisation and, what is more, the a further deepening of the integration process will not bring it closer to either of the two conventional types of organisation. Doxycycline, an antibiotic from the tetracycline class with a broad spectrum of activity, was used to prepare drug delivery systems based on pristine and functionalized mesostructured silica supports. MCM-41-type materials with different textural, structural, and surface properties were used to assess their influence on the drug release kinetics. Small- and wide-angle XRD, FTIR spectroscopy and N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms were used to characterize the carriers before and after doxycycline loading. The drug release experiments were performed in vitro in 0.2 M phosphate buffer solution at 37 °C, and the slowest drug release kinetics was obtained for magnesium-modified MCM-41 carrier. The European Union exists in the current context in the shape of an incomplete social contract, combining characteristics traditionally attributed to states with specific elements of intergovernmental structures. The result of this unprecedented addition consists in a hybrid structure, an open-ended experiment that exceeds the limits of fixed theoretical frames. Built on a solid democratic foundation, the European Union has created a new community with shared identity and goals that are more or less assumed by its citizens. Thus, the public factor has acquired a central dimension both for the gradual process of European integration and for the very existence of the European project. Starting from these premises, this paper seeks to frame the concepts of public support and Euroscepticism, as well as to elucidate the relationship between the aforementioned concepts. ABSTRACT The micellization of three tailor-made triblock copolymers, such as PB100-P2VP100-PEO104, PB185-P2VP108-PEO154, and PB37-P2VP115-PEO241, having similar total molecular weights and constant poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP) sequence lengths, was investigated as a function of pH and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) concentration. At pH 7 the formation of intermicellar aggregates was observed, especially for copolymers of low poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) content. A pH decrease from 7 to 3 leads to a particle size increase due to the electrostatic repulsion of the protonated P2VP chains. The influence of the PEO sequence length was also observed for zeta potential values. At pH 3, in the absence of SDS, core-shell-corona micelles are formed whereas in the presence of small amount of SDS (degree of neutralization DN = 0%-50%), a complex is formed between SDS and the protonated P2VP which leads to the shrinkage of the shell and thus to a decrease of the micellar sizes. For higher DN values, the micellar sizes increase due to the formation of large agglomerates and a transition occurs from a monomodal to a bimodal size distribution. Furthermore, it turned out that secondary aggregation, such as intermicellar aggregation, can completely be avoided if the degree of polymerization (DPn) of the water-soluble block is significantly higher than the DPn of the water-insoluble sequence. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The purpose of this work is to prepare ionically cross-linked (with CaCl2) gellan particles with immobilized yeast cells for their use in repeated fermentation cycles of glucose. The study investigates the influence of ionic cross-linker concentration on the stability and physical properties of the particles obtained before extrusion and during time in the coagulation bath (the cross-linker solution with different CaCl2 concentrations). It was found that by increasing the amount of the cross-linker the degree of cross-linking in the spherical gellan matrix increases, having a direct influence on the particle morphology and swelling degree in water. These characteristics were found to be very important for diffusion of substrate, that is, the glucose, into the yeast immobilized cells and for the biocatalytic activity of the yeast immobilized cells in gellan particles. These results highlight the potential of these bioreactors to be used in repeated fermentation cycles (minimum 10) without reducing their biocatalytic activity and maintaining their productivity at similar parameters to those obtained in the free yeast fermentation. Background: Snakebite is a health issue specific to some parts of the world, especially in the tropical areas, where it produces many victims. The main clinical damage caused by snakebite involves haemotoxic, neurotoxic and myotoxic reactions. We report the case of a young woman suffering from snakebite who developed deep vein thrombosis and compartment syndrome. Case Report: We present the case of a 32-year-old Romanian woman who was injured by her own Crotalinae snake (also known as pit viper or rattlesnake) on her left forearm. When admitted to our Emergency Department, she was conscious with a Glasgow coma scale of 12/15, somnolent, febrile, suffering of headache, tachypnoea; the marks of the snakebite were located in the distal part of the anterior left forearm; she had pain and bleeding at the bite site and swelling of the left upper limb with lymphangitis up to the axilla. She experienced fasciotomy-requiring compartment syndrome of the upper limb and required unfractionated heparin and close monitoring using activated partial thromboplastin time evolution due to micro-thrombosis in the brachial vein. Local improvement was achieved in the next 4 days with progressive diminishment of local tenderness and swelling. Conclusion: Limb deep vein thrombosis might be induced by snakebite, despite the pro-haemorrhagic general condition induced by the envenomation. A high index of clinical suspicion is needed for early diagnosis and timely management, which can improve survival of these patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The European Union appears, in the context of a conceptual and transformational change, in the shape of a fluid structure that is continuously shaped by a wide variety of factors. Under the current redefining process, the present article pursues the amplitude of the social force in the Union's configuration. The EU can be currently viewed as a reality found at crossroads, due to a growing fragility of public support for integration and the increasing contestation of the EU through the amplification of Eurosceptic attitudes and the rising popularity of the populist-nationalist parties. In the conditions of a populism-terrorism-migration triad that is threatening the European integration project, this article represents an attempt to provide a preliminary insight on the forces that shape the configuration of this supranational structure, with regard to the factors that are accountable for the growing scepticism among the European citizens and have shifted the citizens' approach on the EU from a permissive consensus to a constraining dissensus. In the current context, religion has become a central subject for many philosophers and political scientists as a result of the secularisation phenomenon developed in the twentieth century. Although the theorists have divided opinions on the implications of post-modernism, there is a commonly accepted position on a form of justification for the state through religion. The article articulates the fact that all the political concepts are secularised theological concepts. The relationship between religion and politics - divinity and power - will allow the reconstruction of the theological-political construct. There is an ambiguity when referring to this subject, confusing political theology with political religion. From this reasoning, the present article tries to identify the differences between political theology and political religion, discourses debated in European political and social thinking. This approach is relevant because the political role of religion continues to develop increasingly complex discourses, but, at the same time, with a direct impact on the concept of power inside the state. Of late, the general consensus on the evolution and chronology of Coţofeni culture has changed, thanks to new excavations, published materials and more absolute carbon 14 (C14) dating. In the light of these new perspectives, this article presents an updated view of Coţofeni discoveries from the Hunedora side of the Poiana Ruscă Mountains. The first topic it deals with relates to the situation of repertoire discoveries (34 sites), mostly concentrated in the eastern part of the Poiana Ruscă Mountains. The analytical model works upon 6 criteria: locality, actual toponym, geographical coordinates, elevation, landform and type of research. A total of 56% of the Coţofeni sites from this geographical area are known through field research, and a balance has been reported between the outdoor habitations and cave habitations. Based on materials and contexts from the systematic excavations at Cerişor-Peştera Cauce , Peştera nr. 1 and Ciulpăz-Peştera Bulgărelu, the chronological and material heritage landmarks of Coţofeni communities in the Poiana Ruscă Mountains can be established. Etnoarchaeological analysis of the results clearly indicates the mobility of these communities. Based on ceramic materials found in stratigraphic contexts, a cultural and chronological ordering of the ornaments was obtained by seriation. Unfortunately, we do not have any C14 data for the analysed sites, but there is such data from the late Coţofeni site at Silvaşu de Jos-Dealul Ţapului, positioned between Poiana Ruscă Mountains and Haţeg County. Hand fractures are one of the most common causes for presenting to the emergency room. Metacarpal fractures count about 18 to 44% of all hand fractures, and are most often standalone closed injuries, without misplacement, not needing operative treatment. We present a case in which osteosynthesis with plates and screws was used to reduce two metacarpal fractures in order to allow an early motion recovery, despite the fact that a small portion of the periosteum needed to be removed. The type of fractures were misclassified according to the radiological findings, therefore the correct diagnosis was established during surgery. The results according to the radiological aspects and to the DASH score were excellent with 95% function recovery at twelve months. In this case, the use of osteosynthesis with plates and screws led to a good fracture healing without any major complications. However, there are a series of complications related to this method that should be taken into consideration. Being misled by the radiological aspects of the fractures, the most certain way to classify a metacarpal shaft fracture is through exploratory surgery, even if in most of the cases the three radiological views are enough to establish the diagnosis. The mission, desire and preoccupation of each teacher are or should be to ensure academic achievement for each student, by mobilizing all necessary resources. We observe the academic achievement through a variety of educational finalities, and involving socio-affective and personality dimensions indispensable for an effective functioning of the individual within the community. The objective of the research is to underline the influence of the sociometric status of students upon academic achievement. We formulated the hypotheses that positive sociometric status is associated with academic achievement, while negative sociometric status is associated with academic failure. In order to assess them, we applied a three-item sociometric test, and we elaborated the sociomatrices and the sociograms for each group/class in order to extract the annual qualifications for the students within the investigated sample from class registers; afterwards, we carried out the statistical analysis of the data. The findings partially confirm the working hypotheses. Overall, we found a significant relation between the sociometric status of students and academic achievement. A difference was found between students with a positive status and those with zero sociometric status, from the perspective of academic achievement. The investigation revealed that the gender variable has no significant influence on the degree of the relation between sociometric status and academic achievement; while the degree / the stage of schooling variable has a moderating role. Perforated peptic ulcer (PPU), despite antiulcer medication and Helicobacter eradication, is still the most common indication for emergency gastric surgery associated with high morbidity and mortality. Perforated peptic ulcer is a common abdominal disease that is treated by surgery. The development of laparoscopic surgery has changed the way to treat such abdominal surgical emergencies but there is no consensus on whether the benefits of laparoscopic closure of perforated peptic ulcer outweigh the disadvantages such as prolonged surgery time and greater expense. However we can say that laparoscopic repair is a viable and safe surgical option for patients with perforated peptic ulcer disease and should be considered with the necessary expertise available.
