The premise of research in human physiology is to explore a multifaceted system whilst identifying one or a few outcomes of interest. Therefore, the control of potentially confounding variables requires careful thought regarding the extent of control and complexity of standardisation. One common factor to control prior to testing is diet, as food and fluid provision may deviate from participants' habitual diets, yet a self-report and replication method can be flawed by under-reporting. Researchers may also need to consider standardisation of physical activity, whether it be through familiarisation trials, wash-out periods, or guidance on levels of physical activity to be achieved before trials. In terms of pharmacological agents, the ethical implications of standardisation require researchers to carefully consider how medications, caffeine consumption and oral contraceptive prescriptions may affect the study. For research in females, it should be considered whether standardisation between- or within-participants in regards to menstrual cycle phase is most relevant. The timing of measurements relative to various other daily events is relevant to all physiological research and so it can be important to standardise when measurements are made. This review summarises the areas of standardisation which we hope will be considered useful to anyone involved in human physiology research, including when and how one can apply standardisation to various contexts. The Four Core Genotypes (FCG) is a mouse model system used to disentangle the function of sex chromosomes and hormones. We report that a copy of a 3.2 MB region of the X chromosome has translocated to the YSry- chromosome and thus increased the expression of X-linked genes including the single-stranded RNA sensor and autoimmune disease mediator Tlr7. This previously-unreported X-Y translocation complicates the interpretation of studies reliant on C57BL/6J FCG mice. Here the authors find a genetic alteration in the popular "Four Core Genotypes" mouse model that is used to distinguish sex-biased phenotypes caused by sex chromosomes and gonads. Aims: Explore perspectives of steering group members and external clinical supervision facilitators of developing and establishing peer group clinical supervision. Background: The climate of healthcare is complex which can lead to staff burnout and challenges to practice. Clinical supervision is suggested as an approach to managing and leadership of such complexities. Design: Qualitative descriptive. Methods: Focus group interviews with 19 members of the peer group clinical supervision steering groups and individual interviews with five external clinical supervision facilitators from the Western region of Ireland were conducted. Data analysis followed Elo and Kyngäs' content analysis method, involving preparation, organising and reporting, to extract meaning and identify patterns from the qualitative data collected. Results: Developing peer group clinical supervision practice requires, clarity of purpose and function that address the pros and cons of clinical supervision. Organisational leadership is required to support and release staff for peer group clinical supervision and peer group clinical supervisors need to be credible and have a level of expertise in practice. When prepared and supported, the aspects of confidence, leadership, personal development and resilience develop. Conclusion: Peer group clinical supervisors need training and ongoing continual professional development for their role, scope of practice and responsibilities. Sustainability rests on staff awareness and familiarity with the purpose and format of peer group clinical supervision and the regularity of sessions. Implications for the profession and/or patient care: Peer group clinical supervision is a means of supporting improvement of patient care delivery while in parallel supporting personal and professional development of staff, building resilience in the workplace. Impact: This study explored the implementation of peer group clinical supervision for staff across nursing and midwifery disciplines. It found that implementing peer group clinical supervision had a positive impact on staff well‐being and morality and on patient care delivery. These findings influence healthcare service providers in implementing peer group clinical supervision in a sustainable way enabling nurses to continue working in complex healthcare environments delivering safe person‐centred care. The Breast Cancer UK—Breast Cancer Prevention Conference addressed risk from environmental pollutants and health behaviour‐related breast‐cancer risk. Epidemiological studies examining individual chemicals and breast cancer risk have produced inconclusive results including endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) Bisphenol A, per‐ and polyfluorinated alkyl substances as well as aluminium. However, laboratory studies have shown that multiple EDCs, can work together to exhibit effects, even when combined at levels that alone are ineffective. The TEXB‐α/β assay measures total estrogenic load, and studies have provided evidence of a link between multiple‐chemical exposures and breast cancer. However, prospective studies using TEXB‐α/β are needed to establish a causative link. There is also a need to assess real‐life exposure to environmental‐chemical mixtures during pregnancy, and their potential involvement in programming adverse foetal health outcomes in later life. Higher rates of breast cancer have occurred alongside increases in potentially‐modifiable risk factors such as obesity. Increasing body‐mass index is associated with increased risk of developing postmenopausal breast cancer, but with decreased risk of premenopausal breast cancer. In contrast, lower rates of breast cancer in Asian compared to Western populations have been linked to soya/isoflavone consumption. Risk is decreased by breastfeeding, which is in addition to the decrease in risk observed for each birth and a young first‐birth. Risk is lower in those with higher levels of self‐reported physical activity. Current evidence suggests breast‐cancer survivors should also avoid weight gain, be physically active, and eat a healthy diet for overall health. A broad scientific perspective on breast cancer risk requires focus on both environmental exposure to chemicals and health behaviour‐related risk. Research into chemical exposure needs to focus on chemical mixtures and prospective epidemiological studies in order to test the effects on breast cancer risk. Background: Providing positive and supportive environments for nurses and midwives working in ever-changing and complex healthcare services is paramount. Clinical supervision is one approach that nurtures and supports professional guidance, ethical practice, and personal development, which impacts positively on staff morale and standards of care delivery. In the context of this study, peer group clinical supervision provides allocated time to reflect and discuss care provided and facilitated by clinical supervisors who are at the same grade/level as the supervisees. Methods: To explore the clinical supervisor's experiences of peer group clinical supervision a mixed methods study design was utilised within Irish health services (midwifery, intellectual disability, general, mental health). The Manchester Clinical Supervision Scale was used to survey clinical supervisors (n = 36) and semi-structured interviews (n = 10) with clinical supervisors were conducted. Survey data were analysed through SPSS and interview data were analysed utilising content analysis. The qualitative and quantitative data's reporting rigour was guided by the CROSS and SRQR guidelines. Results: Participants generally had a positive encounter when providing clinical supervision. They highly appreciated the value of clinical supervision and expressed a considerable degree of contentment with the supervision they provided to supervisees. The advantages of peer group clinical supervision encompass aspects related to self (such as confidence, leadership, personal development, and resilience), service and organisation (including a positive working environment, employee retention, and safety), and patient care (involving critical thinking and evaluation, patient safety, adherence to quality standards, and elevated levels of care). Conclusion: There are many benefits of peer group clinical supervision at an individual, service, organisation, and patient level. Nevertheless, there is a need to address a lack of awareness and misconceptions surrounding clinical supervision to create an environment and culture conducive to realising its full potential. It is crucial that clinical supervision be accessible to nurses and midwives of all grades across all healthcare services, with national planning to address capacity and sustainability. Purpose: This paper aims to explore perceptions and provides insights, from students who volunteer in policing whilst also studying the college of policing licenced professional policing degree (PPD) in Wales. It examines issues that act as enablers and blockers to volunteering in this public service, which also provides opportunities to develop their employability towards the careers to which they aspire. The paper provides insights from students and makes recommendations of interest to multiple stakeholders locally, regionally, nationally and internationally regarding attracting and recruiting volunteers. Design/methodology/approach: Focus groups were conducted with students at three separate universities in the South and West of Wales. These undergraduate students were volunteers in different police forces and agreed to take part in connection with their experiences. The results were analysed using NVivo to establish commonalities. Findings: The paper provides empirical insights concerning the issues surrounding the way those undergoing the process for recruitment as volunteers within policing are either hindered (blocked) or assisted (enabled). It identifies specific problematic areas as well as areas which have been of assistance. Policy makers, educators and recruiters should be aware of such blockers and enablers when considering adopting volunteering as an opportunity to enhance student employability. It also has resonance for other forms of volunteering in alternate public services. Research limitations/implications: This research is limited to those volunteers who are undertaking the licenced PPD at three separate universities in Wales. Although the research adds to the broader evidence-base with regards to volunteering and its use to enhance employability. Practical implications: The paper includes practical implications for multiple stakeholders including university programme educators, administrators and decision makers in policing with regards to volunteering, employability, programme structures and process management. Purpose: The research aimed to explore the perceptions of aspiring future police officers studying at a university in relation to the actions to be taken with regards to typical posts on social media by a fictitious off and on-duty police officer. This in turn would inform future police workforce requirements. Design/methodology/approach: Policing students who expressed their aspirations as future police officers were recruited. A total of 99 students studying the College of Policing licensed Professional Policing Degree at the University of South Wales, took part in Hydra Immersive Simulations to ascertain their perception of social media posts by a fictitious serving police officer. The students were asked to rate the appropriateness of the social media posts as groups, and as individuals. Findings: The findings suggest that, whilst the majority of students identified misconduct issues in the social media posts, the response to how the fictitious police officer should be dealt with varied. In addition, it would appear that there may be a need for those involved in policing education to reinforce, in an ongoing basis, knowledge of the College of Policing Code of Ethics, misconduct rules, regulations and increase awareness of unacceptable social media posts. Research limitations/implications: The research was conducted with professional policing degree (PPD) students from one university. Practical implications: It is important to reinforce The College of Policing Code of Ethics, expected professional standards and an understanding of what constitutes unacceptable social media posts throughout the education of aspiring police officers. As this has the potential, if recruited, to impact on the service. Originality/value: Limited research has been conducted in relation to the College of Policing licensed higher education programme, the PPD, equipping aspiring police officers to successfully join the service and influence the cultural change. Context: Fire regimes are changing with ongoing climate change, which is leading to an increase in fire frequency and severity. Australia's Black Summer wildfires burned >12 million hectares in 2019–2020, affecting numerous threatened animal species. One of the species predicted to be most impacted was the threatened southern greater glider, an arboreal, hollow-dependent folivore, endemic to eastern Australia's eucalypt forests. Aims: This study aimed to assess how the 2019–2020 wildfires affected greater glider abundance and the resources they depend on in Woomargama National Park, New South Wales, Australia. Methods: We categorised 32 sites into four fire severity treatments with eight sites for each treatment: unburned (continuous unburned vegetation); refuges (unburned patches within the fire's perimeter); low-moderate severity; and high severity. We carried out two spotlight surveys per site using the double-observer method, beginning 21 months after the fires. We also conducted vegetation assessments on the same transects. To analyse the data, we used Generalised Linear Models to compare habitat differences based on fire severity, and N-mixture models to model greater glider detectability and abundance in relation to habitat and fire severity. Key results: We found that fire severity depleted several habitat variables including canopy cover and the number of potentially hollow-bearing trees, a resource that greater gliders rely on. Greater glider abundance also decreased in all burn categories, with the greatest decline experienced in areas burned at high severity. We also found that greater glider abundance was much lower in fire refuges than unburned habitat outside of the fire zone. Conclusions: Greater glider declines following severe wildfire can be at least partly attributed to the level of vegetation loss and the associated loss of key habitat resources. The contribution of direct mortality to population declines remains unknown. Implications: Greater glider conservation will rely heavily on protecting expansive unburned areas of suitable habitat and maintaining hollow-bearing trees. This study aimed to assess the impact of the 2019–2020 wildfires on the abundance of the southern greater glider in Woomargama National Park, New South Wales, Australia. Global warming is a major environmental issue caused by the release of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Light-duty vehicles (LDVs) including passenger cars and light-duty trucks, are a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. The transportation sector is responsible for approximately 23% of global CO2 emissions, with LDVs accounting for a substantial portion of these emissions. This paper aims to investigate the feasibility of zero-carbon fuels with focus on hydrogen and ammonia in spark ignition internal combustion engines for light-duty vehicles. With the increasing demand for sustainable and carbon-free mobility, alternative fuels such as hydrogen and ammonia are gaining attention as potential solutions. The properties and characteristics of these fuels and their potential for utilising them as a fuel in internal combustion engines are also reviewed. Current challenges and opportunities associated with the use of these fuels, including production, storage, and distribution, will be discussed. While there are still technical and infrastructural challenges that need to be addressed, hydrogen and ammonia have the potential to provide clean and efficient energy sources for light-duty vehicles. Context: Freshwater ecosystems rank among the most threatened environments on Earth. Monitoring aquatic and semi-aquatic species is vital to informing conservation of freshwater ecosystems. However, many semi-aquatic mammals can be difficult to detect with conventional survey methods. Aims: We aimed to identify the most effective survey method for detecting an Australian semi-aquatic mammal, the rakali (Hydromys chrysogaster). Methods: We compared rakali detection rates among camera-trapping, live-trapping and visual surveys, and tested the influence of camera angle, trap proximity to water and time of survey, across the Yanco Creek system in southern New South Wales. Key results: Nocturnal spotlight surveys were the most effective method for detecting rakali, with most observations occurring while individuals were foraging or swimming in the water. Camera traps facing a floating platform and cage traps mounted on floating platforms performed better than those deployed on land. Downward-facing camera traps detected rakali three times more often than did forward-facing cameras. Trapping rakali was unreliable, with the species detected at fewer than half of the sites where presence was confirmed via visual observation and camera traps. For species absence to be determined with 95% confidence, 2–4 weeks of nightly trapping is required, compared with six nights of visual surveys or 12 nights for a platform-facing camera. Morning visual surveys were largely ineffective because of predominantly nocturnal rakali activity and difficulty in detecting signs in creek environments. Conclusions: The likelihood of detecting rakali can be maximised through the use of nightly spotlighting and deployment of baited camera traps focussed on platforms or natural resting areas within a water body. Implications: Understanding the effectiveness of each method is essential for developing species-appropriate protocols for population monitoring. Our findings present suitable options to be further explored among the 100-plus small (<1 kg) semi-aquatic mammals worldwide that share similar behaviours and characteristics to the rakali, many of which are threatened or data deficient. Cryptic semi-aquatic mammals present a particular challenge to monitor because of their unique lifestyles. We aimed to identify the most effective methods to detect the seldom-studied rakali, a native Australian semi-aquatic mammal; spotlighting and camera traps placed over water provided the greatest detection probabilities. The aim of the research was to propose probable scenarios for the year 2030 for the cocoa value chain in the department of Antioquia (Colombia), based on functional approach to analysing territorial innovation systems (TIS). TIS in the cocoa value chain was analysed by comparing two rural municipalities as case studies, where different actors respectively participated. Prospective analysis approach, Delphi method, MICMAC program and morphological analysis were combined for the construction of scenarios. Case study comparison indicates that analysis at the territorial level is an appropriate perspective to identify key aspects of the TIS functions that lead to different scenarios for promoting local innovation in agri-food value chains. The results provide specific scenarios including short-, medium- and long-term strategies for the promotion of territorial innovation systems. This approach has the potential for multiple heterogeneous TIS actors to explore different innovation pathways and prospective scenarios that contribute to action planning to reduce uncertainty and promote innovation in TIS. This study contributes with a new way of approaching the functions of TIS, where dynamics that occur in the local geography are highlighted. Also based on the prospective analysis, scenarios are configured that arise from a set of aspects analysed by local and external actors of the territories. This study addressed whether lifetime stressor exposure was associated with psychophysiological reactivity and habituation to a novel laboratory-based stressor. Eighty-six participants (Mage = 23.31 years, SD = 4.94) reported their exposure to lifetime non-sport and sport-specific stressors before completing two consecutive trials of the Trier Social Stress Test, while cardiovascular (i.e., heart rate) and endocrine (i.e., salivary cortisol) data were recorded. Exposure to a moderate number of lifetime non-sport and sport-specific stressors was associated with adaptive cardiovascular reactivity, whereas very low or very high stressor exposure was related to maladaptive reactivity. Moreover, experiencing a very low number of lifetime non-sport (but not sport-specific) stressors was associated with poorer habituation. In contrast, lifetime stressor severity was unrelated to cardiovascular reactivity. Finally, greater lifetime non-sport and sport-specific stressor counts were associated with blunted cortisol reactivity and poorer habituation. This experimental study examines the acquisition of null and overt pronoun interpretations in Chinese as a second language by native speakers of English. A linguistic phenomenon not present in the native language of the learners is identified: the null element in the embedded subject position of Mandarin resultative constructions can only refer to the main-clause subject, while an overt pronoun in the same position can refer both to the main-clause subject and to another entity in the discourse. Thus the acquisition task includes learning a new functional morpheme, a null element, as well as constraining its interpretation in the resultative construction. We tested 59 L2 learners of Chinese at different proficiency levels and 51 native Mandarin speakers on a Truth Value Judgment Task. The learners showed a pattern of interpretation that was statistically indistinguishable from the native speakers' in all but one context. We argue that our findings point to largely successful acquisition of the requisite proform interpretations, even though the restrictions on the interpretation of null elements cannot be transferred from the native language. Some perspectives from environmental criminology have hypothesized that broader planning governance issues relating to the provision of public transport and taxis services as egress mechanisms may sometimes act to precipitate crime and disorder and exacerbate public safety issues. Utilising research findings from a study of regular users of the Night Time Economy (NTE) of Cardiff, this article examines the hypothesis that poor urban governance may precipitate crime, particularly the use of taxis as egress from the NTE space. This survey is the empirical basis of this paper. The findings, whilst not being completely representative, indicate the perceived importance of the role of taxis as facilitators for reducing anti-social behaviour and egress from the NTE by customers and end-users of this facility. Consequently, it is suggested that any reduction in the provision of such services may well increase the incidents of anti-social behaviour and disruption within the NTE, with a consequential increase in demand for services from police and other agencies. This work proposes an analytical gradient-based optimization approach to determine the optimal weight matrices that make the state and control input at the final time close to zero for the linear quadratic regulator problem. Most existing methodologies focused on regulating the diagonal elements using only bio-inspired approaches or analytical approaches. The method proposed, contrarily, optimizes both diagonal and off-diagonal matrix elements based on the gradient. Moreover, by introducing a new variable composed of the steady-state and time-varying terms for the Riccati matrix and using the coordinate transformation for the state, one develops algebraic equationsbased closed-form solutions to generate the required states and numerical partial derivatives for an optimization strategy that does not require the computationally intensive numerical integration process. The authors test the algorithm with one- and two-degrees-of-freedom linear plant models, and it yields the weight matrices that successfully satisfy the pre-defined requirement, which is the norm of the augmented states less than 10−5. A jet that emerges from a nozzle and attaches to an inclined, setback wall is studied. The reattaching jet is the canonical element of most fluidic devices, and the aim of this paper is to improve the understanding of its dynamics. An analytical model is developed that describes the dynamic behavior of the jet position in response to acoustic excitation. A novel, unsteady jet curvature equation is derived from first principles, which forms the basis of the model. The Görtler velocity profile for a plane, turbulent jet is assumed, and an alternative approach to determining its virtual origin is used. A novel approach to modeling the momentum balance at the jet reattachment point is demonstrated to predict the observed behavior in response to acoustic excitation. The resulting model is linearized at a series of operating points informed by data from the literature at a range of flow rates, wall setback distances, and gas types. A Monte Carlo analysis is conducted to quantify the model sensitivity to parameter uncertainty. The bandwidth of the jet response to acoustic excitation is demonstrated to depend linearly on jet velocity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Therapeutic monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are standard care for many B-cell haematological cancers. The modes of action for these mAbs include: induction of cancer cell lysis by activating Fcg-receptors on innate immune cells; opsonising target cells for antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity or phagocytosis, and/or triggering the classical complement pathway; the simultaneous binding of cancer cells with T-cells to create an immune synapse and activate perforin-mediated T-cell cytotoxicity against cancer cells; blockade of immune checkpoints to facilitate T-cell cytotoxicity against immunogenic cancer cell clones; and direct delivery of cytotoxic agents via internalisation of mAbs by target cells. While treatment regimens comprising mAb therapy can lead to durable anti-cancer responses, disease relapse is common due to failure of mAb therapy to eradicate minimal residual disease. Factors that limit mAb efficacy include: suboptimal effector cell frequencies, overt immune exhaustion and/or immune anergy, and survival of diffusely spread tumour cells in different stromal niches. In this review, we discuss how immunomodulatory changes arising from exposure to structured bouts of acute exercise might improve mAb treatment efficacy by augmenting (i) antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity, (ii) antibody-dependent cellular phagocytosis, (iii) complement-dependent cytotoxicity, (iv) T-cell cytotoxicity, and (v) direct delivery of cytotoxic agents. This study analyzes the production of native (L1) and foreign (L2) vowels by 42 L1 English learners of French (ELoF) at the start and end of a 6-month residence abroad (RA) in a French-speaking country. Data are also reported from a delayed post-test, which takes place 10 months after a subsection of participants (n = 27) return to the L1 English environment. Results reveal systemic phonetic drift in ELoF's L1 English vowels over the RA, and this accompanies the phonetic development occurring in the participants' L2 French vowel system, a phenomenon we label "tandem drift." This L1–L2 link is also supported by interspeaker variation: the individuals whose L2 French vowels shift the most are also the participants who exhibit the most substantial L1 phonetic drift in the same direction. Results for the L1 re-immersion time point suggest a partial—but not complete—reversal of phonetic drift, whereas no reversal of the L2 gains made over the RA is apparent. Nevertheless, at the individual level, the learners whose L2 gains reverse the most upon L1 re-immersion are also most likely to exhibit reverse phonetic drift in their L1. Overall, these findings indicate a relationship between L2 speech learning and L1 phonetic drift, which we argue is driven by the global phonetic properties of both L2 and L1 becoming linked at a representational level. Although these representations appear malleable, it is clear that recent changes are not guaranteed to reverse despite substantial re-exposure to L1 input. Aim: This article aims to discuss how clinical supervision is an important approach in supporting frontline nurses and students during and post COVID‐19 through the lens of the nursing metaparadigms. Design: Discussion article. Methods: Discourse of the literature considering the importance of working collaboratively with healthcare and educational organisations in operationalising clinical supervision. Results: The evidence base supporting clinical supervision as an effective support strategy for nurses exists, however, its implementation and practice has become sporadic. A resurgence is required to support student's and nurse's during this pandemic. It is timely for nurse educators to creatively engage with clinical partners in supporting clinical supervision to enhance both nurses and students pandemic practice experiences. Clinical supervision is proposed as one strategy to support and guide both nurses and students to develop, strengthen and challenge the effectiveness of their care during COVID‐19. Knock in a spark-ignition (SI) engine is a complicated combustion phenomenon that stimulates high-pressure oscillations inside the combustion chamber and restricts engine performance. This study presents a high-speed OH* chemiluminescence imaging technique to investigate the knock mechanism resulting from firing multiple spark plugs. The experiment was performed using a customized liner having three spark plugs installed at equal spacing, and to compare the results with conventional SI conditions, in which one spark plug was mounted at the center of the cylinder head. In addition, multiple pressure transducers were used at various locations to record the frequencies induced by the pressure oscillations inside the cylinder during knocking events. The results showed that firing a single central spark plug generated mild knock with late combustion phasing and lower power output. However, adding more spark plugs could advance the initiation of autoignition and produce higher knock intensity along with lower combustion duration for the same operating conditions. Additionally, a weak OH* chemiluminescence intensity oscillation was monitored before the autoignition of the unburned charge occurred. The crank angle location of peak OH* intensity and peak HRR showed a good linear curve fit with a positive slope. Furthermore, the larger amount of unburned mass fraction produced stronger pressure waves due to multiple autoignition sites, and the unburned mass fraction exhibited a good linear relationship with unburned temperature and end-gas area at the knock onset point. Moreover, the frequency spectrum recorded by the multiple pressure sensors illustrated that in the case of a single central spark plug only circumferential acoustic waves were formed with low power intensity. However, multiple ignition sites promoted both circumferential and radial pressure waves inside the combustion chamber because of multiple autoignitions occurring both near the center and cylinder wall. This paper investigates the performance of hydrogen-fueled, spark-ignited, single-cylinder Cooperative Fuel Research using experimental and numerical approaches. This study examines the effect of the air–fuel ratio on engine performance, emissions, and knock behaviour across different compression ratios. The results indicate that λ significantly affects both engine performance and emissions, with a λ value of 2 yielding the highest efficiency and lowest emissions for all the tested compression ratios. Combustion analysis reveals normal combustion at λ ≥ 2, while knocking combustion occurs at λ < 2, irrespective of the tested compression ratios. The Livenwood–Wu integral approach was evaluated to assess the likelihood of end-gas autoignition based on fuel reactivity, demonstrating that both normal and knocking combustion possibilities are consistent with experimental investigations. Combustion analysis at the ignition timing for maximum brake torque conditions demonstrates knock-free stable combustion up to λ = 3, with increased end-gas autoignition at lower λ values. To achieve knock-free combustion at those low λs, the spark timings are significantly retarded to after top dead center crank angle position. Engine-out NOx emissions consistently increase in trend with a decrease in the air–fuel ratio of up to λ = 3, after which a distinct variation in NOx is observed with an increase in the compression ratio. In this paper, we discuss how agrifood systems transformation is addressed by the Aotearoa New Zealand agrifood innovation system, and to what extent it can be mission-oriented in view of emerging Agriculture 4.0 technologies. There are several initiatives that work on different transition pathways towards agrifood systems transformation, and hence there seems to be an emerging NZ mission-oriented AIS. New networks of actors are formed, also consisting of non-traditional players (e.g. AgTech) and incorporating Māori visions of transformed agrifood systems. Nonetheless, initiatives are sometimes still concerned with optimisation, whereas engaging with phase-out or exnovation of unsustainable food systems would also be needed. Hence, it seems that challenges such as fragmentation, lock-in of current systems and legacy policies, and limited attention to exnovation, are still standing in the way of enacting a truly mission-oriented NZ AIS. Enhancing coordination amongst these initiatives and clarifying how they envision and enact agrifood system transformation missions seem key to move forward. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Over the past few decades, criteria emissions such as carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HCs), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) from transportation have decreased significantly, thanks to stricter emission standards and the widespread adoption of cleaner technologies. While air quality is a complex problem that is not solely dependent on transportation emissions, it does play a significant role in both regional and global air quality levels. Emission standards such as Euro 1–6 in Europe, Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) regulations, Tier I—III standards in the US and the low emission vehicle (LEV) program in California have all played a huge role in bringing down transportation emissions and hence improving air quality overall. This article reviews the effect of emissions from transportation, primarily focusing on criteria emissions from road transport emissions and highlights the impact of some of the novel technological advances that have historically helped meet these strict emission norms. The review also notes how modern road engine vehicles emissions compare with national and international aviation and shipping and discusses some of the suggested Euro 7 emissions standards and their potential to improve air quality. Methods: We examined whether immune cell profiles differ between healthy women (n = 38) and breast cancer survivors (n = 27) within 2 years of treatment, and whether any group-differences were influenced by age, cytomegalovirus infection, cardiorespiratory fitness and body composition. Using flow cytometry, CD4+ and CD8+ T cell subsets, including naïve (NA), central memory (CM) and effector cells (EM and EMRA) were identified using CD27/CD45RA. Activation was measured by HLA-DR expression. Stem cell-like memory T cells (TSCMs) were identified using CD95/CD127. B cells, including plasmablasts, memory, immature and naïve cells were identified using CD19/CD27/CD38/CD10. Effector and regulatory Natural Killer cells were identified using CD56/CD16. Results: Compared to healthy women, CD4+ CM were +Δ21% higher among survivors (p = 0.028) and CD8+ NA were −Δ25% lower (p = 0.034). Across CD4+ and CD8+ subsets, the proportion of activated (HLA-DR+) cells was +Δ31% higher among survivors: CD4+ CM (+Δ25%), CD4+ EM (+Δ32%) and CD4+ EMRA (+Δ43%), total CD8+ (+Δ30%), CD8+ EM (+Δ30%) and CD8+ EMRA (+Δ25%) (p < 0.046). The counts of immature B cells, NK cells and CD16+ NK effector cells were higher among survivors (+Δ100%, +Δ108% and +Δ143% respectively, p < 0.04). Subsequent analyses examined whether statistically significant differences in participant characteristics, influenced immunological differences between groups. Compared to healthy women, survivors were older (56 ± 6 y vs. 45 ± 11 y), had lower cardiorespiratory fitness (VO_ 2max mL kg−1 min−1 : 28.8 ± 5.0 vs. 36.2 ± 8.5), lower lean mass (42.3 ± 5.0 kg vs. 48.4 ± 15.8 kg), higher body fat (36.3% ± 5.3% vs. 32.7% ± 6.4%) and higher fat mass index (FMI kg/m² : 9.5 ± 2.2 vs. 8.1 ± 2.7) (all p < 0.033). Analysis of covariance revealed divergent moderating effects of age, CMV serostatus, cardiorespiratory fitness and body composition on the differences in immune cell profiles between groups, depending on the cell type examined. Moreover, across all participants, fat mass index was positively associated with the proportion of HLA-DR+ CD4+ EMRA and CD8+ EM/EMRA T cells (Pearson correlation: r > 0.305, p < 0.019). The association between fat mass index and HLA-DR+ CD8+ EMRA T cells withstood statistical adjustment for all variables, including age, CMV serostatus, lean mass and cardiorespiratory fitness, potentially implicating these cells as contributors to inflammatory/immunedysfunction in overweight/obesity. This paper introduces a high-order nonlinear least-squares method for solving six-degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) navigation of satellite maneuvers. The approach involves developing first through fourth-order Taylor series models, which provide the necessary conditions that are iteratively adjusted to recover the unknown roots for reducing the errors arising from fitting models to a given set of observations. An initial guess is provided for the unknown parameters in the system, developing a correction vector using Taylor expansion, and then manipulating the necessary conditions to provide the least-squares algorithm. Computational differentiation (CD) tools generate the Taylor expansion partial derivative models. This paper presents an experimental work conducted using a 6-DOF platform to demonstrate the performance of the developed high-order nonlinear least-squares navigation method. An initial calibration of the sensing systems is performed in an operationally relevant ground-based environment. To date, 59 countries, representing 54% of global greenhouse gas emissions have made pledges for net-zero emissions targets within this century. This will require cleaner and more efficient sources of energy which is driving research into small-scale engines and auxiliary power units for hybrid vehicles and stationary power generation. A suitable candidate for such applications is the micro gas turbine due to its high-power density, reliability and low emissions. Further development of such engines is required though due to their increasing parasitic energy losses relative to net power output as size decreases. Additive manufacturing offers the design freedom to not only increase efficiencies but to also reduce emissions when applied to the various components of micro gas turbines. This article reports the effects of several additive manufacturing (AM) enabled design features for micro gas turbine combustion chambers via experimental testing of full-scale parts. The main objective of the additively manufactured features is the reduction of exhaust emissions by improving the air-fuel mixture distribution and consequently ignition and combustion. Using additive manufacturing a novel conical radial swirl-stabilized tubular combustor with internal vane fuel injection was created as a baseline for the laboratory testing. Several other features, including augmented backside liner cooling surfaces, in-vane lattice structures for fuel mixing and upstream liner fuel injection rings were also generated to further the investigations into additively manufactured features and their effects on fuel mixing. Using multiple combinations of all these features, 10 geometries were generated and tested at a variety of operating conditions. Three inlet temperatures were tested (500°C, 600°C and 700°C) with varying fuel flow rates to investigate their operating limits at a constant inlet pressure of 4 bar absolute. Test results for the full range of equivalence ratios and operating conditions showed that the upstream liner fuel injection designs generated NOx, CO and THC emissions on par with the baseline but showed a reduction in the maximum and minimum operating ranges. This design, however, demonstrated the distinct advantage of being able to ignite at full air mass flow; this is not possible with the baseline designs and is also an added benefit to its main use which is the reduction of liner temperature. Overall, the test results underscore that designing combustion chambers for additive manufacturing can provide a myriad of benefits not only for micro gas turbines but also for other applications requiring high efficiency combustion chambers. 'Petrus Arretinus vir acerrimi iudicii' – Pietro Aretino, a man of most acute mind – went down in history as an intimate of Agostino Chigi (1466–1520), the great banker and patron of the arts. In his letters and drama, Aretino frequently evokes the golden years he spent as a protégé and household member. He recalls his brief but formative residence at Chigi's Villa Farnesina (ca. 1516–1520) as a time of freedom and creativity, when allegedly he gained the friendship and respect of the major artists who worked there. This article will review Aretino's literary evocations of the Chigi environment, especially its green spaces and gardens. In contrast to his famous portrait of Venice, Aretino's cityscape of remembered Rome gives us an ecology of the urban garden. As well as the published letters and the Cortigiana, it will draw on the Ragionamenti, dialogues that observe Roman life through the characters of marginalized and disreputable women. Agri-food value chains are complex systems comprising of a network of interlinked and interdependent actors. To foster collaboration between these actors, trust between actors and in value chains is considered to be key. Despite growing scholarly attention an overview of to what extent and how trust is the role of trust in agri-food value chains is lacking. Employing a systematic review, this paper aims to explore the literature on trust in agri-food value chains to provide a solid knowledge basis for future studies into more specific aspects of trust. For our results, 139 papers were analysed published between 2001 and 2020. Studies were mainly conducted in Africa and Europe focussing on meat and vegetable chains. The results show a growing but dispersed field as studies hold a great conceptual diversity and theory building within the field of agri-food value chains is lacking. Based on our analysis we call for developing a coherent body of knowledge exploring the role of trust in agri-food value chains by: (1) employing a dynamic perspective on trust; (2) focussing on trust in agri-food value chain systems; and (3) focussing on the increasing importance of digitalisation for trust relations. Background: Mental health is an ever-increasing concern for UK Universities and is underreported. Creative and dynamic approaches to tackle student wellbeing are important. In 2018, Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) Student Wellbeing Service initiated a pilot study of a therapeutic running programme 'MINDFIT' that combined physical activity, led by a counsellor, alongside a psychoeducation approach to support student mental health. Methods: Mixed methods were used which included the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), evaluating low mood and depression, and Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale-7 (GAD-7), evaluating levels of anxiety. Results: A total of 28 students were triaged onto a weekly programme over three semesters. Overall, 86% of the participants completed the programme. A promising reduction in the scores for PHQ-9 and GAD-7 was found at the end of the programme. Focus groups, with student participants, were held to gather qualitative data for analysis. After thematic analysis, three main themes emerged: "Creating a safe community", "Making progress" and "Pathways to success". Conclusions: MINDFIT was an effective and engaging multi-layered therapeutic approach. Recommendations identified the importance and effectiveness of the triage process in recruiting students and sustainability of the programme through the continued engagement of students post programme. More research is required to identify the long-term effects of the MINDFIT approach and how applicable it is to higher education contexts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Knock research is an essential study because knock limits spark-ignition (SI) engine power output, durability, noise, fuel consumption, and emission performance. The thermal efficiency of an engine can be improved by increasing the compression ratio, but at the same time it leads to the possibility of end gas autoignition inside the chamber. The objective of this work was to show the effect of three different compression ratios (CRs) 8.5, 9.5, and 10.5 on the mechanism of knock. In order to achieve this four equispaced spark plugs were fitted around the circumference of a special metal liner to initiate flame fronts from those plugs by firing with different spark approaches (e.g. spark timing, number, and location). In addition, six pressure sensors were installed at various locations to precisely record the autoignition event by monitoring pressure oscillations, combustion characteristics, and knock intensity. In-cylinder pressure and heat release rate (HRR) analyses were applied to distinguish the knocking combustion for the three different CRs. The results showed that a greater number of spark plugs produced more stable combustion even for a delayed spark timing (ST) than a single spark plug, but also increased pressure oscillations, HRR and knock propensity with higher CRs due to an increase in pressure and temperature inside the cylinder. The maximum amplitude of pressure oscillation (MAPO) method was used to determine the knock intensity, and it was observed that at the lowest CR of 8.5 three spark plugs gave higher MAPO values compared to four spark plugs for the same operating conditions. However, four spark plugs instigated higher MAPO values than three spark plugs for the higher CRs of 9.5 and 10.5 because, with the increase of CR and spark plug numbers, the pressure and temperature were increased during the combustion event, which was coupled with the compression effect on the unburned end gas mixture. Additionally, Fast Fourier transform (FFT) and wavelet methods were implemented to observe the frequencies induced during knock. The benefits of pre-chamber combustion (PCC), such as improved engine efficiency and reduced NOx emissions, are primarily observed when operating at lean conditions with an active pre-chamber, where auxiliary fuel is supplied directly to the pre-chamber. Estimating the pre-chamber excess air ratio (λ) is important in the active pre-chamber concept to gain insights into the pre-chamber combustion phenomenon. Experimental investigations were performed using a narrow-throat pre-chamber at global-λ 1.6, 1.8, and 2.0. The fraction of fuel energy injected in the pre-chamber over the total fuel energy was fixed at 3%, 7%, and 13% for each global-λ. The mixture formation process inside the pre-chamber is first simulated using the 1-D simulation software GT-Power to analyze the pre-chamber λ at the ignition timing. However, the 1-D results were unable to reproduce the experimental observations on the pre-chamber pressure buildup accurately. Upon simulating the same conditions using the 3-D CFD software CONVERGE, the pre-chamber λ estimated from the CFD model is well-correlated to the experimental data. The CFD results indicate that the amount of fuel trapped in the pre-chamber at the inlet valve closing timing is over-predicted by the 1-D simulations. A correlation between the injected and the trapped fuel in the pre-chamber is proposed by theoretical scavenging models and applied to the 1-D simulation results to improve pre-chamber λ prediction accuracy. Explore advisor understanding of their roles in advisory systems characterised by differing mixes of public and private funding and delivery. A systems perspective of advisory system governance is combined with an individual perspective of advisor roles. Data from a survey of 38 Australian, 19 New Zealand, 606 Argentine and 279 Brazilian respondents were analysed for statistical differences. In all contexts, advisor priorities reflect state or industry goals. Where there is more private funding and delivery, advisors also prioritise farmer commercial goals. Under public extension funding and delivery, group methods and capacity building are emphasised to reach many farmers and realise public goals. Advisors play a crucial role in reconciling competing national, industry and farmer goals at the farm-level. This emphasises participatory methods and intermediary positions in the advisory system to facilitate dialogue and support farmers to realise competing goals. A policy implication is public and industry funding is needed for advisors to engage with public and industry organisations to understand and contribute to policies and objectives they will be advising on. Combining a systems perspective of country-level advisory system governance with an individual perspective of advisor roles highlights that advisor understanding of their roles are related to the public governance context in which they operate. The advisor understanding of their roles in the advisory system is related to different governance of pluralistic advisory systems. This study seeks to examine the relationship between antilocution and trust in the workplace by reflecting on the perceptions of police officers who are undertaking the new Higher Education (HE) pathway into the policing profession in England and Wales. This relationship is considered through Allport (1979). 'The Nature of Prejudice. New York, NY: Perseus' concept of antilocution and the lens of trust in the workplace, to understand how new police students think they are regarded by their policing colleagues and its impact on practice. Utilizing a survey of police students from five different forces in England and Wales, indicative results suggest that, whilst broadly supportive of new police officers, there may be some division regarding their education and training pathway through higher education, engendering levels of prejudice and bias towards the new recruits. Police student responses indicate that many of them feel that more is expected of them and that they are under closer supervision because they have undertaken the Higher Education route. Arguably, this prejudice and bias have an adverse effect on trust within the workplace, a concept which is front and centre of policing which ultimately can have a negative impact on public safety and security. The results of this study indicate that the interaction between new recruits (out-group) and established colleagues (in-group) is complex and not straightforward, and suggested implications for police practice are presented. To analyse and compare the extension objectives of individual extension agents across nine countries. Extension agents from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, New Zealand, Nigeria, Paraguay, and South Africa were surveyed using convenience sampling (n = 2707). A typology of extension agents with different profiles of objectives was built using data from five of the countries. The most frequent individual extension objectives were to increase farmers' knowledge through training, and productive modernisation of farms. Four types of extension agents were identified: the socially-engaged extension agent; the agricultural production and business expert; the trainer of subsistence farmers, and the pro-poor practitioner. Researchers can use these results to analyse specific institutional settings, and extension institutions to reflect on the type of extension agent that best fit their institutional goals and to select practitioners accordingly. Productive modernisation persists as a fundamental individual extension objective in many countries. Individual extension objectives are not stand-alone preferences but clusters of interrelated priorities, which do not necessarily coincide with those of extension institutions or national policies. Practitioners' agency plays a key role in realising (or not) a fit between extension service offerings and demand for extension services, and contributes to a wider repertoire of advisory styles in extension systems than implied by extension institutional objectives. This research adds to the literature by examining individual extension agents, rather than the institutional extension objectives, and providing a typology of agents with different profiles of objectives. The purpose of this Tutorial Review is to outline the fundamental photochemistry of metal carbonyls, and to show how the advances in technology have increased our understanding of the detailed mechanisms, particularly how relatively simple experiments can provide deep understanding of complex problems. We recall some important early experiments that demonstrate the key principles underlying current research, concentrating on the binary carbonyls and selected substituted metal carbonyls. At each stage, we illustrate with examples from recent applications. This review first considers the detection of photochemical intermediates in three environments: glasses and matrices; gas phase; solution. It is followed by an examination of the theory underpinning these observations. In the final two sections, we briefly address applications to the characterization and behaviour of complexes with very labile ligands such as N2, H2 and alkanes, concentrating on key mechanistic points, and also describe some principles and examples of photocatalysis.
