Objectives: To assess the risk of venous thromboembolic events (VTEs) and bleeding with or without thromboprophylaxis during neoadjuvant chemotherapy in bladder cancer patients scheduled for radical cystectomy. Materials and Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study in 4886 patients with non‐metastatic bladder cancer undergoing cystectomy across 28 centres in 13 countries between 1990 and 2021. Inverse probability weighting analyses were performed to estimate the effect of thromboprophylaxis on VTE and bleeding. Results: In 147 patients (3%) VTEs were recorded within the first year. These occurred a median (interquartile range [IQR]) of 127 (82–198) days after bladder cancer diagnosis. Bleeding events occurred in 131 patients (3%) within the first year. These occurred a median (IQR) of 101 (83–171) days after cancer diagnosis. In inverse probability weighting analyses, compared to patients without thromboprophylaxis during chemotherapy, patients with thromboprophylaxis had not only a lower risk of VTE (hazard ratio [HR] 0.32, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.12–0.81; P = 0.016) but also a lower bleeding risk (HR 0.03, 95% CI 0.09–0.12; P <0.0001). The retrospective nature of the study was its main limitation. Conclusions: In this retrospective analysis, the benefit of thromboprophylaxis during neoadjuvant chemotherapy before cystectomy is in line with data from randomised trials in other malignancies. Metallodrugs are an important group of medicinal agents used for the treatment of various diseases ranging from cancers to viral, bacterial, and parasitic diseases. Their distinctive features include the availability of a metal centre, redox activity, as well as the ability to multitarget. Diruthenium paddlewheel complexes are an intensely developing group of metal scaffolds, which can securely coordinate bidentate xenobiotics and transport them to target tissues, releasing them by means of substitution reactions with biomolecular nucleophiles. It is of the utmost importance to gain a complete comprehension of which chemical reactions happen with them in physiological milieu to design novel drugs based on these bimetallic scaffolds. This review presents the data obtained in experiments and calculations, which clarify the chemistry these complexes undergo once administered in the proteic environment. This study demonstrates how diruthenium paddlewheel complexes may indeed embody a new paradigm in the design of metal-based drugs of dual-action by presenting and discussing the protein metalation by these complexes. The targeting of human thioredoxin reductase is widely recognized to be crucially involved in the anticancer properties of several metallodrugs, including Au(I) complexes. In this study, the mechanism of reaction between a set of five N-heterocyclic carbene Au(I) complexes and models of the active Sec residue in human thioredoxin reductase was investigated by means of density functional theory approaches. The study was specifically addressed to the kinetics and thermodynamics of the tiled process by aiming at elucidating and explaining the differential inhibitory potency in this set of analogous Au(I) bis-carbene complexes. While the calculated free energy profile showed a substantially similar reactivity, we found that the binding of these Au(I) bis-carbene at the active CysSec dyad in the TrxR enzyme could be subjected to steric and orientational restraints, underlining both the approach of the bis-carbene scaffold and the attack of the selenol group at the metal center. A new and detailed mechanistic insight to the anticancer activity of these Au(I) organometallic complexes was thus provided by consolidating the TrxR targeting paradigm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: In this study, we analyzed 593 patients with NMIBC who underwent radical cystectomy via a robotic-assisted or open approach between 2015 and 2020. Patients with NMIBC who underwent RARC or ORC were matched 1:1 by age, sex, BMI, year of surgery and urinary diversion. We found that RARC + ICUD for patients with NMIBC is safe and associated with a lower blood loss, a lower transfusion rate and a shorter hospital stay compared to ORC. Complication rates were similar. Concerning oncologic outcomes, RARC appeared non-inferior to ORC with no significant difference in DFS, CSS and OS. These results must be confirmed with prospective randomized studies. Background: For non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) requiring radical surgery, limited data are available comparing robotic-assisted radical cystectomy with intracorporeal urinary diversion (iRARC) to open radical cystectomy (ORC). The objective of this study was to compare the two surgical techniques. Methods: A multicentric cohort of 593 patients with NMIBC undergoing iRARC or ORC between 2015 and 2020 was prospectively gathered. Perioperative and pathologic outcomes were compared. Results: A total of 143 patients operated on via iRARC were matched to 143 ORC patients. Operative time was longer in the iRARC group (p = 0.034). Blood loss was higher in the ORC group (p < 0.001), with a consequent increased post-operative transfusion rate in the ORC group (p = 0.003). Length of stay was longer in the ORC group (p = 0.007). Post-operative complications did not differ significantly (all p > 0.05). DFS at 60 months was 55.9% in ORC and 75.2% in iRARC with a statistically significant difference (p = 0.033) found in the univariate analysis. Conclusion: We found that iRARC for patients with NMIBC is safe, associated with a lower blood loss, a lower transfusion rate and a shorter hospital stay compared to ORC. Introduction and Objectives: Robot-assisted simple prostatectomy (RASP) and holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) are both well-established, minimally invasive surgical treatment options for lower urinary tract symptoms caused by benign prostatic enlargement. We have reported the first comparative analysis of both techniques in patients with prostates of ≥200 cc. Materials and Methods: Between 2009 and 2020 a total of 53 patients with a prostate volume of ≥200 cc were surgically treated at OLV Hospital Aalst (Belgium): 31 underwent RASP and 22 underwent HoLEP. Preoperative and postoperative assessments included uroflowmetry with maximum urinary flow rate (Qmax) and postvoid residual volume (PVR), as well as the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) and quality of life (IPSS-QoL). The complication rates were evaluated according to the Clavien–Dindo Classification. Results: Patients treated with RASP had significantly larger prostate volumes compared with HoLEP (median 226 cc vs 204.5 cc, p = 0.004). After a median follow-up of 14 months, both groups showed a significant improvement in the maximum flow rate (+10.60 mL/s vs +10.70 mL/s, p = 0.724) and a reduction of the IPSS score (−12.50 vs −9, p = 0.246) as well as improvement of the QoL (−3 vs −3, p = 0.880). Median operative time was similar in both groups (150 minutes vs 132.5 minutes, p = 0.665). The amount of resected tissue was lower in the RASP group (134.5 g vs 180 g, p = 0.029) and there was no significant difference in postoperative prostate-specific antigen (1.2 ng/mL vs 0.8 ng/mL, p = 0.112). Despite a similar median catheterization time (3 days vs 2 days, p = 0.748), the median hospitalization time was shorter in the HoLEP group (4 days vs 3 days, p = 0.052). Complication rates were similar in both groups (32% vs 36%, p = 0.987). Conclusion: Our results suggest similar outcomes for RASP and HoLEP in patients with very large prostates ≥200 cc. Dye‐sensitized photoanodes for C−H activation in organic substrates are assembled by vacuum sublimation of a commercially available quinacridone (QNC) dye in the form of nanosized rods onto fluorine‐doped tin oxide (FTO), TiO2, and SnO2 slides. The photoanodes display extended absorption in the visible range (450–600 nm) and ultrafast photoinduced electron injection (<1 ps, as revealed by transient absorption spectroscopy) of the QNC dye into the semiconductor. The proton‐coupled electron‐transfer reactivity of QNC is exploited for generating a nitrogen‐based radical as its oxidized form, which is competent in C−H bond activation. The key reactivity parameter is the bond‐dissociation free energy (BDFE) associated with the N⋅/N−H couple in QNC of 80.5±2.3 kcal mol−1, which enables hydrogen atom abstraction from allylic or benzylic C−H moieties. A photoelectrochemical response is indeed observed for organic substrates characterized by C−H bonds with BDFE below the 80.5 kcal mol−1 threshold, such as γ‐terpinene, xanthene, or dihydroanthracene. Worldwide, we have witnessed an expansion of robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery (RALS) and thanks to the global adoption of high-resolution diagnostic imaging technologies, an increased incidence of newly diagnosed prostatic, renal and bladder cancers has been recorded with concurrent second primary urological cancer diagnoses increasing by 1.5%. Diverse authors have reported their findings concerning synchronous multi-visceral malignances robotic treatment within the scientific literature. The aim of this study is to comprehensively review all reported articles describing concurrent upper and lower RALS using a singular robotic port scheme within the same intervention for renal malignances and concomitant prostatic or bladder cancers. To the best of our knowledge and vigorous literature search, this is the first study that comprehensively evaluates and reports all combined upper and lower urinary tract surgeries published so far. In carefully selected patients, thanks to multidisciplinary preoperative assessment and surgical planning a combined robotic approach can reduce the morbidity, complications, hospital admissions and the overall length of hospitalization. We introduce in the many-body GW scheme the modulation of the screened Coulomb interaction W arising from the macroscopic dielectric response in the infrared. We derive expressions for the polaron binding energies, the renormalization of the effective masses and for the electron and hole relaxation times. Electron and hole mobilities are then obtained from the incorporation of appropriate scattering rules. Zinc-blende GaN and orthorhombic MAPbI3 are used as test beds finding fair agreement with results from rigorous electron-phonon coupling approaches. Background and Objective: The Clavien–Dindo Classification (CDC) only reports the postoperative complication of highest grade. It is thus of limited value for radical cystectomy, after which patients usually experience multiple complications. The Comprehensive Complication Index (CCI) is a novel scoring system, which incorporates all postoperative events in one single value. The study aimed to adopt the CCI for the evaluation of complications in patients undergoing robot-assisted radical cystectomy (RARC) with intracorporeal urinary diversion (ICUD) and explore its advantages in the analysis of the morbidity of RARC with ICUD. Patients and Methods: A multicentric cohort of 959 patients undergoing RARC+ICUD between 2015 and 2020, whose complications are encoded in local prospective registries. Postoperative complications at 30 days were assessed using both the CDC and CCI. The CCI was calculated using an online tool (assessurgery.com). Risk factors for overall, major complications (CDC ≥III), and CCI were evaluated using uni- and multivariable logistic and linear regressions. To analyze the potential advantage of using the CCI in clinical trials, a sample size calculation of a hypothetic clinical trial was performed using as endpoint reduction of morbidity with either the CDC or CCI. Results: Overall, 885 postoperative complications were reported in 507 patients (53%). The CCI improved the definition of postoperative morbidity in 22.6% of patients. Male sex and neobladder were associated with major complications and to a significant increase in CCI on adjusted regressions. In a hypothetical clinical trial, 80 patients would be needed to demonstrate a ten-point reduction in CCI, compared with 186 needed to demonstrate an absolute risk reduction of 20% in overall morbidity using the CDC. Conclusion: CCI improves the evaluation of postoperative morbidity by considering the cumulative aspect of complications compared with the CDC. Purpose: To compare cancer-specific mortality (CSM) and overall mortality (OM) between immediate radical cystectomy (RC) and Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG) immunotherapy for T1 squamous bladder cancer (BCa). Methods: We retrospectively analysed 188 T1 high-grade squamous BCa patients treated between 1998 and 2019 at fifteen tertiary referral centres. Median follow-up time was 36 months (interquartile range: 19–76). The cumulative incidence and Kaplan–Meier curves were applied for CSM and OM, respectively, and compared with the Pepe–Mori and log-rank tests. Multivariable Cox models, adjusted for pathological findings at initial transurethral resection of bladder (TURB) specimen, were adopted to predict tumour recurrence and tumour progression after BCG immunotherapy. Results: Immediate RC and conservative management were performed in 20% and 80% of patients, respectively. 5-year CSM and OM did not significantly differ between the two therapeutic strategies (Pepe–Mori test p = 0.052 and log-rank test p = 0.2, respectively). At multivariable Cox analyses, pure squamous cell carcinoma (SqCC) was an independent predictor of tumour progression (p = 0.04), while concomitant lympho-vascular invasion (LVI) was an independent predictor of both tumour recurrence and progression (p = 0.04) after BCG. Patients with neither pure SqCC nor LVI showed a significant benefit in 3-year recurrence-free survival and progression-free survival compared to individuals with pure SqCC or LVI (60% vs. 44%, p = 0.04 and 80% vs. 68%, p = 0.004, respectively). Conclusion: BCG could represent an effective treatment for T1 squamous BCa patients with neither pure SqCC nor LVI, while immediate RC should be preferred among T1 squamous BCa patients with pure SqCC or LVI at initial TURB specimen. Molecular forces induced by optical excitations are connected to a wide range of phenomena, from chemical bond dissociation to intricate biological processes that underpin vision. Commonly, the description of optical excitations requires the solution of computationally demanding electronic Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE). However, when studying non-covalent interactions in large-scale systems, more efficient methods are desirable. Here we introduce an effective approach based on coupled quantum Drude oscillators (cQDO) as represented by the many-body dispersion model. We find that the cQDO Hamiltonian yields semi-quantitative agreement with BSE calculations and that both attractive and repulsive optical van der Waals (vdW) forces can be induced by light. These optical-vdW interactions dominate over vdW dispersion in the long-distance regime, showing a complexity that grows with system size. Evidence of highly non-local forces in the human formaldehyde dehydrogenase 1MC5 protein suggests the ability to selectively activate collective molecular vibrations by photoabsorption, in agreement with recent experiments. The authors devise an efficient quantum approach to address the van der Waals interactions due to photoexcitations by approximating the Bethe-Salpeter equation. Dye-sensitized photoelectrochemical cells represent an appealing solution for artificial photosynthesis, aimed at the conversion of solar light into fuels or commodity chemicals. Extensive efforts have been directed towards the development of photoelectrodes combining semiconductor materials and organic dyes; the use of molecular components allows to tune the absorption and redox properties of the material. Recently, we have reported the use of a class of pentacyclic quinoid organic dyes (KuQuinone) chemisorbed onto semiconducting tin oxide as photoanodes for water oxidation. In this work, we investigate the effect of the SnO2 semiconductor thickness and morphology and of the dye-anchoring group on the photoelectrochemical performance of the electrodes. The optimized materials are mesoporous SnO2 layers with 2.5 μm film thickness combined with a KuQuinone dye with a 3-carboxylpropyl-anchoring chain: these electrodes achieve light-harvesting efficiency of 93% at the maximum absorption wavelength of 533 nm, and photocurrent density J up to 350 μA/cm2 in the photoelectrochemical oxidation of ascorbate, although with a limited incident photon-to-current efficiency of 0.075%. Calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT) support the role of the reduced species of the KuQuinone dye via a proton-coupled electron transfer as the competent species involved in the electron transfer to the tin oxide semiconductor. Finally, a preliminary investigation of the photoelectrodes towards benzyl alcohol oxidation is presented, achieving photocurrent density up to 90 μA/cm2 in acetonitrile in the presence of N-hydroxysuccinimide and pyridine as redox mediator and base, respectively. The out-of-plane optical constants of monolayer two-dimensional materials have proven to be experimentally elusive. Owing to their reduced dimensionality, optical measurements have limited sensitivity to these properties which are hidden by the optical response of the substrate. Therefore, there remains an absence of scientific consensus on how to correctly model these crystals. Here we perform an experiment on the optical response of a single-layer two-dimensional crystal that addresses these problems. We successfully remove the substrate contribution to its optical response by a step deposition of a monolayer crystal inside a thick polydimethylsiloxane prism. This allows for a reliable determination of both the in-plane and the out-of-plane components of its surface susceptibility tensor. Our results prescribe one clear theoretical model for these crystals. This precise characterization of their optical properties will be relevant to future progresses in photonics and optoelectronics with two-dimensional materials. Experimental testing of the expected linear optical anisotropy of 2D crystals, arising from their finite thickness, have so far been complicated by substrate contributions. Introduction The aim of this study was to assess the safety of elective urological surgery performed during the pandemic by estimating the prevalence of COVID-19-like symptoms in the postoperative period and its correlation with perioperative and clinical factors. Material and methods In this multicenter, observational study we recorded clinical, surgical and postoperative data of consecutive patients undergoing elective urological surgery in 28 different institutions across Italy during initial stage of the COVID-19 pandemic (between February 24 and March 30, 2020, inclusive). Results A total of 1943 patients were enrolled. In 12%, 7.1%, 21.3%, 56.7% and 2.6% of cases an open, laparoscopic, robotic, endoscopic or percutaneous surgical approach was performed, respectively. Overall, 166 (8.5%) postoperative complications were registered, 77 (3.9%) surgical and 89 (4.6%) medical. Twenty-eight (1.4%) patients were readmitted to hospital after discharge and 13 (0.7%) died. In the 30 days following discharge, fever and respiratory symptoms were recorded in 101 (5.2%) and 60 (3.1%) patients. At multivariable analysis, not performing nasopharyngeal swab at hospital admission (HR 2.3; CI 95% 1.01-5.19; p = 0.04) was independently associated with risk of developing postoperative medical complications. Number of patients in the facility was confirmed as an independent predictor of experiencing postoperative respiratory symptoms (p = 0.047, HR:1.12; CI95% 1.00-1.05), while COVID-19-free type of hospitalization facility was a strong independent protective factor (p = 0.02, HR:0.23, CI95% 0.07-0.79). Conclusions Performing elective surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic does not seem to affect perioperative outcomes as long as proper preventive measures are adopted, including nasopharyngeal swab before hospital admission and hospitalization in dedicated COVID-19-free facilities. Neoplastic cell seeding due to needle tumor manipulation during renal mass biopsy (RMB) or thermal ablative treatment is a rare but potentially serious event that can turn an organ-confined and curable tumor in a nonorgan-confined and non-curable disease. Despite the widespread use of percutaneous thermal ablative treatment for small renal masses (SRMs), this complication has been described in few case reports and small case series and has never been reported after ablative treatment alone. We report a series of two patients that underwent cryoablation for SRMs and developed recurrence along the needle tract. Available knowledge on the controversial topic of tumor seeding following needle manipulation are poor. So far, reporting cases of tumor cell seeding due to needle manipulation is useful to permit a better understanding of this complication. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Transurethral resection of the bladder (TURB) is a common endoscopic procedure. Perioperative antimicrobial prophylaxis (AMP) is used to reduce the risk of infectious complications. However, there is an absence of knowledge about both incidence of infectious complications after TURB and advantage of AMP in general. The objective of this study is to determinate the prevalence of postoperative infectious complications after routine TURB without AMP. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed clinical data of all patients who underwent TURB in the same Academic Urologic Department between January 2011 and December 2013. We consider as relevant for analysis, patients that underwent TURB without receiving any AMP. Infection was defined as a body temperature >37.5°C sustained for at least 24 hours. Sepsis was defined according to the third international consensus definition for sepsis and septic shock. Results: In the period of the study, 223 TURBs were performed without use of AMP. Mean age was 70.3 years (standard deviation [SD] 11.3). Mean operative time was 25.14 minutes (SD 16). Median length of hospital stay was 3 days (interquartile range [IQR]: 2–4). Six (2.7%) patients developed postoperative infective complications. No case of sepsis was reported. Two (0.9%) patients received an antimicrobial therapy with fluoroquinolones despite absence of any signs of infection. Two hundred fifteen (96.4%) patients of TURBs did not receive any antimicrobial drugs and did not develop any infectious complications. Conclusion: In our series, infectious complications after TURB occurred in <3% of cases. In conclusion AMP should not be routinely used prior TURB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To compare the outcomes of PN to those of RN in very elderly patients treated for clinically localized renal tumor. Patients and methods: A purpose-built multi-institutional international database (RESURGE project) was used for this retrospective analysis. Patients over 75 years old and surgically treated for a suspicious of localized renal with either PN or RN were included in this database. Surgical, renal function and oncological outcomes were analyzed. Propensity scores for the predicted probability to receive PN in each patient were estimated by logistic regression models. Cox proportional hazard models were estimated to determine the relative change in hazard associated with PN vs RN on overall mortality (OM), cancer-specific mortality (CSM) and other-cause mortality (OCM). Results: A total of 613 patients who underwent RN were successfully matched with 613 controls who underwent PN. Higher overall complication rate was recorded in the PN group (33% vs 25%; p = 0.01). Median follow-up for the entire cohort was 35 months (interquartile range [IQR] 13–63 months). There was a significant difference between RN and PN in median decline of eGFR (39% vs 17%; p < 0.01). PN was not correlated with OM (HR = 0.71; p = 0.56), OCM (HR = 0.74; p = 0.5), and showed a protective trend for CSM (HR = 0.19; p = 0.05). PN was found to be a protective factor for surgical CKD (HR = 0.28; p < 0.01) and worsening of eGFR in patients with baseline CKD. Retrospective design represents a limitation of this analysis. Conclusions: Adoption of PN in very elderly patients with localized renal tumor does not compromise oncological outcomes, and it allows better functional preservation at mid-term (3-year) follow-up, relative to RN. Objective: To determine the impact of imperative or elective indications on the perioperative, functional and oncological outcomes of patients undergoing robot‐assisted partial nephrectomy. Methods: Between June 2006 and September 2016, data of patients who underwent robot‐assisted partial nephrectomy at the Onze‐Lieve‐Vrouwziekenhuis Hospital in Aalst, Belgium, were retrospectively reviewed from a prospectively collected database. Only patients with non‐metastatic, clinical T1–T2 graded tumors were included. Perioperative, functional and oncological outcomes were recollected. A comparative analysis was carried out after dividing patients into two groups: those who underwent robot‐assisted partial nephrectomy for an elective indication (group 1, n = 194), and for an imperative indication (group 2, n = 57) caused by a solitary kidney (n = 20), impaired renal function (n = 2) or both (n = 35). Results: Patients in group 2 were older (74 vs 71 years, P < 0.001), and had a higher Charlson Comorbidity Index (P < 0.001) and American Society of Anesthesiologists score (P < 0.001). No differences were observed concerning laterality, sex, preoperative aspects and dimensions used for an anatomical score or clinical stage. Surgical outcomes considering estimated blood loss, surgical time, ischemia time and transfusion rate showed no significant difference between groups. The complication rate according to Clavien–Dindo showed no difference between groups (P = 0.6). No difference was found between groups with regard to percentage decrease of estimated glomerular filtration rate (7.4 vs 4.8%, P < 0.15). Conclusions: Robot‐assisted partial nephrectomy can be safely and effectively carried out by experienced surgeons in a high‐volume center with similar perioperative, functional and oncological outcomes for both elective or imperative indications. Purpose: To test the impact of surgeon experience on urinary continence (UC) recovery after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP). Materials and Methods: The study included 1477 consecutive patients treated with RARP by four surgeons between 2006 and 2014. UC recovery was defined as being completely dry over a 24-hour period at followup. Surgeon experience was coded as the total number of RARP performed by the surgeon before the patient’s operation. Multivariable analysis tested the association between surgeon experience and UC recovery. Covariates consisted of patient age, Charlson comorbidity index, preoperative International Index of Erectile Function-Erectile Function domain (IIEF-EF), nerve-sparing surgery (none vs unilateral vs bilateral), and preoperative risk groups (low- vs intermediate- vs high risk). Results: The number of cases performed by each surgeon was 541, 413, 411, and 112, respectively. Median follow-up was 24 months (inter-quartile range: 18, 40). The UC recovery rate at 1 year after surgery was 82%. At multivariable analyses, surgeon experience represented an independent predictor of UC recovery (hazard ratio: 1.02, p < 0.001). The surgical learning curve was similar among surgeons, moving linearly from ~60% of UC rate at the initial cases to almost 90% after more than 400 procedures. Conclusions: In patients undergoing RARP, surgeon experience is a significant predictor of UC recovery. The surgical learning curve of UC recovery does not reach a plateau even after more than 100 cases, suggesting a continuous improvement of the surgical technique. Background & Aim: High grade non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) is common in urological practice. Most of these cancers are or become refractory to intravesical immunotherapy and chemotherapy. Here we evaluated the efficacy of combined local bladder hyperthermia and intravesical mitomycin-C (MMC) instillation in patients with high-risk recurrent NMIBC. Materials and methods: Between February 2014 and December 2015, 18 patients with high risk NMIBC were enrolled. Patients were treated in an outpatient basis with 6 weekly induction sessions followed by monthly maintenance sessions with intravesical MMC in local hyperthermia with bladder wall thermo-chemotherapy (BWT) system (PelvixTT system, Elmedical Ltd., Hod Hasharon, Israel). The follow-up regimen included cystoscopy after the induction cycle and thereafter with regular intervals. Time to disease recurrence was defined as time from the first intravesical treatment to endoscopic or histological documentation of a new bladder tumour. Adverse events were recorded according to CTC 4.0 (Common Toxicity Criteria) score system. Results: Mean age was 72 (32-87) years. 10 patients had multifocal disease, 9 had CIS, 6 had recurrent disease and 2 had highly recurrent disease (> 3 recurrences in a 24 months period). 6 patients underwent previous intravesical chemotherapy with MMC. The average number of maintenance sessions per patient was 7.6. After a mean follow-up of 433 days, 15 patients (83.3%) were recurrence-free. 3 patients had tumour recurrence after a mean period of 248 days without progression. Side effects were limited to grade 1 in 2 patients and grade 2 in 1 patient. Conclusions: BWT seems to be feasible and safe in high grade NMIBC. Materials engineering is a key for the enhancement of photovoltaics technology. This is particularly true for the novel class of perovskite solar cells. Accurate theoretical modelling can help establish general trends of behavior when addressing structural changes. Here, we consider the effects due to halide substitution in organohalide CH3NH3PbX3 perovskites exploring the halide series with X = Cl, Br, I. For this task, we use accurate DFT and GW methods including spin–orbit coupling. We find the expected band gap increase when moving from X = I to Cl, in line with the experimental data. Most notably, the calculated absorption coefficients for I, Br and Cl are nicely reproducing the behavior reported experimentally. A common feature of all the simulated band structures is a significant Rashba effect. This is similar for MAPbI3 and MAPbBr3 while MAPbCl3 shows in general a reduced Rashba interaction coefficient. Finally, a monotonic increase of the exciton reduced masses is calculated when moving from I to Br to Cl, in line with the stronger excitonic character of the lighter perovskite halides. Thermal transport coefficients are independent of the specific microscopic expression for the energy density and current from which they can be derived through the Green-Kubo formula. We discuss this independence in terms of a kind of gauge invariance resulting from energy conservation and extensivity, and demonstrate it numerically for a Lennard-Jones fluid, where different forms of the microscopic energy density lead to different time correlation functions for the heat flux, all of them, however, resulting in the same value for the thermal conductivity. Organohalide lead perovskites have attracted considerable interest among emerging photovoltaic technologies, delivering highly efficient solid-state solar cells. Despite the huge potential of this class of materials, the use of Pb-containing systems will likely hamper the wide spread take off of perovskite solar cells. The development of lead-free hybrid perovskites represents thus an important step in the exploitation of this promising technology. Very recently, the use of new mixed Pb–Sn MASnxPb(1−x)I3 perovskites has been reported, with a considerable increase in the extension of the solar spectrum absorption with respect to lead-halide perovskites, shifting the absorption onset down to the near-IR. In light of the anticipated potential of Sn-based organohalide perovskites in replacing lead-based materials, here we apply a recently developed computational approach to the description of mixed Sn–Pb compounds showing a range of compositions comparable to experimentally characterized compounds. For the investigated series of MASnxPb(1−x)I3 perovskites we find a continuous and monotonic variation of the energy levels, shifting at lower potentials; and band-gaps, which shift towards the near-IR, as the Sn content in the perovskite is increased. Notably, while we find slightly unbalanced electron/hole transport in the pure phases, Pb (Sn) materials being better electron (hole) transporters, for intermediate compositions an almost perfectly balanced charge carrier transport can be achieved, in line with recent experimental observations. Objectives: To review the cases of patients with suspected penile fracture and asses erectile and sexological outcomes. Materials and methods: from 1987 to 2013 presented to the Urology Clinic of Trieste and at the AIED of Pordenone a total of 41 cases that were divided into two groups according to the timing of treatment: 18 patients with anamnestic diagnosis of penile fracture treated nonimmediately and 23 patients treated immediately after the trauma. For all patients we evaluated the type of treatment adopted, the occurrence of complications and reoperations and the follow-up. The erectile function was also evaluated through the IIEF, as well as the psychological impact of the trauma on social and sex life, using a psycho- sexological questionnaire. Results: Among patients treated immediately after the trauma 14 were subjected to surgery. About a year after surgery, penile curvature was reported in 1 patient, pain in 3 patients, urinary disorders in 1 patient, while none reported erectile dysfunction (ED). Out of these, only 3 patients underwent reoperation. Among those treated conservatively 1 patient reported curvature, 1 patient reported pain and none reported ED. Among patients who were admitted at a later date, 14 reported curvature and 4 reported pain whereas urinary disorders were reported in 1 and ED in 4 patients. From a psychological point of view, the trauma caused in most cases a fear of new trauma and of repercussions on erectile function and sensitivity. Conclusions: The diagnosis is mainly clinical; however, radiological investigation is essential to confirm the diagnosis, assess the site and extent of the trauma and possible urethral involvement, so as to plan the most appropriate treatment. In addition, immediate treatment leads to better long-term results, with a lower incidence of ED and penile curvature. Hybrid AMX3 perovskites (A = Cs, CH3NH3; M = Sn, Pb; X = halide) have revolutionized the scenario of emerging photovoltaic technologies, with very recent results demonstrating 15% efficient solar cells. The CH3NH3PbI3/MAPb(I1-xClx)3 perovskites have dominated the field, while the similar CH3NH3SnI3 has not been exploited for photovoltaic applications. Replacement of Pb by Sn would facilitate the large uptake of perovskite-based photovoltaics. Despite the extremely fast progress, the materials electronic properties which are key to the photovoltaic performance are relatively little understood. Density Functional Theory electronic structure methods have so far delivered an unbalanced description of Pb- and Sn-based perovskites. Here we develop an effective GW method incorporating spin-orbit coupling which allows us to accurately model the electronic, optical and transport properties of CH3NH3SnI3 and CH3NH3PbI3, opening the way to new materials design. The different CH3NH3SnI3 and CH3NH3PbI3 electronic properties are discussed in light of their exploitation for solar cells, and found to be dominantly due to relativistic effects. These effects stabilize the CH3NH3PbI3 material towards oxidation, by inducing a deeper valence band edge. Relativistic effects, however, also increase the material band-gap compared to CH3NH3SnI3, due to the valence band energy downshift (∼0.7 eV) being only partly compensated by the conduction band downshift (∼0.2 eV). Since their first appearance, organic-inorganic perovskite absorbers have been capturing the attention of the scientific community. While high efficiency devices highlight the importance of band level alignment, very little is known on the origin of the strong n-doping character observed in the perovskite. Here, by means of a highly accurate photoemission study, we shed light on the energy alignment in perovskite-based devices.
