Experimental methods capable of selectively probing water at the DNA minor groove, major groove, and phosphate backbone are crucial for understanding how hydration influences DNA structure and function. Chiral-selective sum frequency generation spectroscopy (chiral SFG) is unique among vibrational spectroscopies because it can selectively probe water molecules that form chiral hydration structures around biomolecules. However, interpreting chiral SFG spectra is challenging since both water and the biomolecule can produce chiral SFG signals. Here, we combine experiment and computation to establish a theoretical framework for the rigorous interpretation of chiral SFG spectra of DNA. We demonstrate that chiral SFG detects the N–H stretch of DNA base pairs and the O–H stretch of water, exclusively probing water molecules in the DNA first hydration shell. Our analysis reveals that DNA transfers chirality to water molecules only within the first hydration shell, so they can be probed by chiral SFG spectroscopy. Beyond the first hydration shell, the electric field-induced water structure is symmetric and, therefore, precludes chiral SFG response. Furthermore, we find that chiral SFG can differentiate chiral subpopulations of first hydration shell water molecules at the minor groove, major groove, and phosphate backbone. Our findings challenge the scientific perspective dominant for more than 40 years that the minor groove "spine of hydration" is the only chiral water structure surrounding the DNA double helix. By identifying the molecular origins of the DNA chiral SFG spectrum, we lay a robust experimental and theoretical foundation for applying chiral SFG to explore the chemical and biological physics of DNA hydration. In a world where efficiency and sustainability in poultry production are crucial, the need arises to find natural additives that enhance the growth of broiler chickens. Recent research has put ginger powder under the microscope, evaluating its impact as a growth promoter through a detailed analysis of plithogenic statistics. This study not only focuses on the quantitative aspects of weight gain and improved feed conversion, but also on the qualitative effects that this additive may have on the general health and well-being of the birds. The methodology used involves a rigorous and multifaceted approach, integrating biological and nutritional variables, which allows a deep and holistic understanding of the benefits of ginger powder in poultry farming. Preliminary results suggest that ginger powder could be a viable alternative to synthetic growth promoters, showing significant improvement in growth parameters of broilers. However, plithogenic analysis reveals complex nuances that require careful interpretation, as variations in bird response indicate that factors such as dosage and administration time are crucial to maximizing benefits. This finding opens a range of possibilities for future research and practical applications, pointing towards more natural and sustainable poultry production. This study aimed to evaluate the association between microcephaly and hearing disorders in children with exposed or suspected exposure to Zika virus (ZIKV) during the intrauterine period. In this cross-sectional study, we enrolled children exposed or suspected of being exposed to ZIKV during intrauterine period, admitted to the hospital between April 2016 and July 2018, and followed up until September 2021. All children underwent at least one automated auditory brainstem response (AABR) test. For analysis, the patients were divided into four groups: those with microcephaly, without microcephaly, suspected ZIKV infection, and controls. Other causes of microcephaly were excluded. Hearing impairment was assessed using the AABR to determine associations with microcephaly or central nervous system (CNS) abnormalities. Of the 134 children included, 34 (25.4%) were diagnosed with congenital Zika syndrome (CZS), of whom 28 (82.4%) had microcephaly, and the remaining six (17.6%) without microcephaly. Among the 28 children with microcephaly, 3 (10.7%) had abnormal AABR. Among CZS children without microcephaly (n = 6), 1 (16.7%) had abnormal AABR (Fisher’s exact test p = 0.56). Conclusion: In our study population, that hearing impairment assessed using the AABR test was not associated with microcephaly or severe CNS alterations. Background: Scientists can play an important role in policymaking by providing evidence and consensual expert opinion on the state of scientific knowledge. Delphi surveys have been widely used to develop consensus on a topical issue, yet not compatible with public health crisis situations requiring rapid decisions. We developed a fast-track Delphi process, providing experts with a structured approach to rapidly develop and quantify consensus in support of informed policy decisions. Methods: We identified key elements of consensus-building techniques through a literature review and derived methodological procedures that served as the basis for the elaboration of the new process. Selected methodological experts provided advice on necessary adjustments. The process was pilot tested using a real-world public health issue. Results: The fast-track Delphi process is a hybrid approach between a conventional Delphi and the nominal group technique: one group session followed by two rounds of e-questionnaire, with predefined steps. We developed an ad hoc toolkit (REDCap templates, R code for analysis and production of reports, user guide) to overcome time constraints, which we pilot tested with experts. The feasibility test conducted in 18 days in the field of tobacco control demonstrated the applicability and usefulness of the process in real-world conditions. Conclusions: We strongly believe that this fast-track Delphi process has the potential to help inform policy decisions in various types of crises, including emerging diseases or novel potentially harmful products. Tridimeris is the only genus of Annonaceae endemic to Mexico, and since its description more than 150 years ago, the genus has been largely ignored. Here, based on herbarium specimens and a comprehensive phylogenomic study involving hundreds of nuclear markers, the first taxonomic revision of the genus Tridimeris (Annonaceae, Malmeioideae, subtribe Sapranthinae) is presented. Ten species are recognized, six of which are newly described here. All the species are exclusively found in Mexico's most humid forests, particularly in the montane cloud forest and the tropical rainforest. The genus Tridimeris is morphologically distinguished from other neotropical genera of the Annonaceae by its leaves with pocket domatia present in the axils of the secondary veins, by its dimerous flowers (two sepals and four petals), basally fused sepals with ciliated margins, by a reduced number of carpels per flower (1–5) and by its large and fleshy fruits (monocarps) with numerous seeds. A highly resolved phylogenetic hypothesis provides strong support for the relationships among Tridimeris species, forming two well-supported clades. Consequently, two new sections are proposed, namely Tridimeris sect. Tridimeris and Tridimeris sect. Zoque. A detailed description of the morphology of the genus is presented, including the description of the pollen, domatia and its phylogenetic relationships. Taxonomic treatments of the species include synonyms, geographic and ecological notes, comparisons with similar species and a preliminary assessment of their conservation status. All species of the genus are potentially threatened with extinction and eight are assessed as Critically Endangered, which makes it the most threatened lineage of Mexican trees. This study emphasizes the importance of scientific collections as invaluable sources of data for current taxonomic revisions and conservation. This study analyzes hydrometeorological data (1950–2023) to examine the signatures of El Niño and La Niña events and assess their impact on rainfall distribution in the Piura Region, Peru. Using data from 23 stations, high-resolution gridded rainfall datasets (PISCO), and oceanic–atmospheric indices we investigated the frequency, intensity, and spatial variability of these events in the Piura River Basin (PRB). Return periods for very strong El Niño and La Niña events are 25 and 19 years, respectively, compared to 2 years for neutral conditions. Over the past 30 years, the recurrence of Coastal El Niño has significantly increased. This increased frequency contributes to the global rise in El Niño events, reducing the return period for very strong events from 5.2 to 3.4 years. This rise correlates with an increase in maximum daily precipitation across the basin centered in the middle PRB during El Niño years. Future rainfall projections, based on 20 CMIP6 GCMs under SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5 scenarios, suggest continued intensification of rainfall events. These findings highlight the necessity of incorporating El Niño variability into infrastructure design, water resource management, and climate adaptation strategies to mitigate the impacts of these increasingly frequent and severe events in the PRB. Purpose: In this article, we describe and illustrate the victimization experiences of transgender immigrants in the U.S. detention system. Methods: We use two sources of data, (1) the 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey and (2) Immigration and Customs Enforcement government contracts and audit documentation, to gain a greater understanding of the experiences of transgender detainees in these facilities. Results: By connecting what is evidenced in these two data sources, we observe a systemic pattern of victimization that includes physical and sexual assault, long-term solitary confinement, as well as the denial of lifesaving gender-affirming services. Conclusion: Immigrant detention centers are often mismanaged entities in which the well-being of detainees is hardly procured. The conditions are even more precarious and downright dangerous for transgender detainees. We conclude by recommending stringent penalties to facilities that endanger the well-being of detainees as well as an overall reform of the immigration system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Piroplasmids are vector-borne hemoprotozoan parasites belonging to the phylum Apicomplexa that are of veterinary and medical importance. Wild carnivores are hosts for diverse piroplasmids, some of which are highly pathogenic for domestic dogs and cats. A large-scale survey including samples from 244 individuals belonging to eleven different species that were opportunistically obtained between 1993 and 2015 in four Autonomous Regions in Spain were tested for piroplasmid DNA with two different nested-PCR assays targeting the 18S rRNA gene. Sixty of 85 Eurasian badgers (Meles meles), 11 of 42 red foxes (Vulpes vulpes), and 1 of 10 stone martens (Martes foina) resulted positive. In contrast, 46 wolves (Canis lupus), 26 genets (Genetta genetta), 22 pine martens (Martes martes), and other less-represented species were negative. Sequencing revealed that all foxes and one badger were parasitized by Babesia vulpes, and the remaining badgers and the stone marten by Babesia sp. badger type A (BBTA). The prevalence of BBTA in Catalonian badgers was significantly lower in Alpine than in Continental and Mediterranean climates. This study confirms that badgers and ref foxes constitute the natural hosts of BBTA and B. vulpes, respectively, with occasional spillovers to other species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study addressed the challenge of accurate and timely diagnosis of respiratory diseases such as influenza, asthma, and pneumonia by developing and evaluating a web-based expert system. The objective was to develop and assess both the usability and diagnostic efficiency of a webbased expert system adaptable to mobile devices. A combined methodological approach was used, using the rapid application development (RAD) model to build the system and the user usability system (SUS) to evaluate the usability with the participation of 15 users and 21 simulated cases with a confusion matrix to determine the precision, accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of the system in diagnosing respiratory diseases. The results showed that the expert system has a considerable capacity to identify and differentiate these diseases, with a precision of 86%, an accuracy of 76%, a sensitivity of 80%, and a specificity of 67%. Furthermore, the usability evaluation using the SUS method yielded an average of 82, indicating a positive perception and good usability by the users. In conclusion, although the results suggest a promising potential to improve the diagnostic process in clinical and community settings, the need for future studies to validate its performance in real clinical settings is recognized. The by-product of extracting oil from sesame has good functional properties for use in the development of new food products. In this study, the effect of simulated gastrointestinal digestion on the bioaccessibility of phenolic compounds, as well as the antioxidant, antidiabetic, and hypoglycemic properties of a beverage from sesame by-products was analyzed. Oral digestion significantly decreased the total phenolic content of the beverage, while the total flavonoid content increased. Both phytochemicals increased after gastric and intestinal digestion. Twenty-five phenolic compounds were characterized in the sesame by-product beverage, including feruloylquinic acid, which was present in all the digestive fractions analyzed. The most abundant free phenolic was quercetin, which was also present in all the digested fractions. On the other hand, the most abundant phenolic in the digested fractions was isorhamnetin. During gastrointestinal digestion, the antioxidant activity and inhibitory effects on the α-glucosidase and DPP-IV of the beverage significantly improved, while the ability to inhibit the α-amylase significantly increased during oral digestion, remaining constant throughout digestion. Correlation analysis indicated that flavonoids, including quercetin, may be the compounds with the greatest effect on the evaluated activities. The results of this study not only improve the understanding of the impact of gastrointestinal digestion on the bioaccessibility of phenolic compounds but also suggest potential applications in formulating functional foods with enhanced antioxidant, hypoglycemic, and antidiabetic properties, contributing to the development of health-promoting food products. Introduction: Alterations in cognitive performance are associated with inadequate nutritional states and diet composition. Prebiotics, such as inulin, are substances that can modulate the gut microbiome and, consequently, brain function by producing metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of supplementation with inulin on cognitive flexibility, body composition, and gut microbiota in a murine model exposed to a high-fat (HF) diet. Methods: CD1 mice were divided into five groups: control fed a standard diet (C), high-fat diet (HF), inulin (I), high-fat diet with inulin (HFI), and manipulation control (M). Dietary supplementation was administered for 6 weeks. Cognitive flexibility was assessed using the Attentional Set-Shifting Test (AST). In addition, body composition was measured via electrical bioimpedance and adipose tissue compartments of each mouse were removed and weighed. Finally, gut microbiota metataxonomic was analyzed through metataxonomic bacterial 16S rRNA sequencing. Results: We observed that HF group required more AST trials than the C, HFI, and I groups in the compound discrimination (CD) and extra-dimensional (ED) stages. Notably, the HFI group required fewer trials than the HF group in the ED stage (p = 0.0187). No significant differences in overall body composition were observed between the groups. However, the percentage of gonadal and peritoneal adipose tissue was significantly higher in the HF and I groups compared to the C group. Statistically significant differences in alpha diversity for gut microbiota were observed using the Shannon, Simpson, and Chao1 indices. The I group showed a decrease in bacterial diversity compared to the HF group. While no differences were observed between groups in the phyla Bacillota and Bacteroidotes, Clostridium bacteria represented a lower proportion of sequences in the I group compared to the C group. Additionally, Lactobacillus represented a lower proportion of sequences in the HF group compared to the C and I groups. Discussion: These findings suggest that supplementation with inulin could be a useful approach to mitigate the negative effects of an HF diet on cognitive flexibility and modulate gut microbiota composition. Simple Summary: The CLEANED tool, developed by the Alliance of Bioversity International and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture, allows for a better understanding of the productive status and the environmental and economic impacts of different dairy systems. This work compares the following two dairy systems in the Peruvian Amazon: extensive (grazing) and semi-intensive (grazing plus supplementation). Results showed that farmers may likely need a smaller area than what they use at present (grazing area). Milk yield was 382 and 1254 L/ha/year, water use was 0.59 and 0.29 m3/kg of fat- and protein-corrected milk (FPCM), methane (CH4) emissions were 1.7 and 1.0 kg CO2eq/kg FPCM and N2O emissions were 0.22 and 0.17 kg CO2eq/kg FPCM, for the extensive and semi-intensive systems, respectively. The assessment of the status of dairy farms under tropical conditions allows the development of strategies to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, while increasing revenue by increasing the milk yield or decreasing the feeding costs. Dairy farms in developing countries are key to fighting hunger and poverty. However, their environmental and economic impact in the tropical region of Peru has been scarcely studied. The CLEANED tool, developed by the Alliance of Bioversity International and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture, allows us to assess the productive situation and the environmental and economic impact of different dairy systems. The objective of the study was to use the CLEANED tool to evaluate the production, environmental, and economic impacts of extensive and semi-intensive dairy systems in the tropical region of Peru. Data from twelve dairy farms (six extensive and six semi-intensive systems), in two seasons (rainy and dry) were recorded using semi-structured surveys. The required area (ha/year), production (L milk/ha/year), environmental impact (water use in m3/product), and methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions in kg CO2eq/kg fat- and protein-corrected milk (FPCM) were estimated, and the economic analysis was performed for each livestock system. Results showed that the required area was of 28.9 and 32.6 ha, milk yield was 382 and 1254 L/ha/year, water use was 0.59 and 0.29 m3/kg FPCM, CH4 emissions were 1.7 and 1.0 kg CO2eq/kg FPCM, and N2O emissions were 0.22 and 0.17 kg CO2eq/kg FPCM, for the extensive and semi-intensive systems, respectively. The study revealed significant positive differences in semi-intensive livestock systems, including increased productivity, the reduced intensity of CH4 and N2O emissions, and greater profitability. Research training stands out as a means to develop generic competencies, potentiate lifelong learning (LL), and integrate initiatives for compliance with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), contributing to the development of a resilient society. Therefore, the constant promotion of a research culture within higher education institutions is an essential task for reducing the gap between scientific productivity and industry challenges and proposing solutions to real-life challenges. One of the main stages involved in any research process is the proposition of a methodological design: a detailed plan conceived and later developed to answer the research questions. Nevertheless, within the engineering context, even though a wide range of methodological designs are considered, these are not always explicitly stated in research papers, so at the undergraduate level there is an absence of more precise guidelines that allow a more concise orientation. Consequently, at this level, a challenge in research training is perceived. This provided a motivation: the development of a framework for the actors involved in research training at the engineering undergraduate level so that they can easily define the methodological design. In this context, the present research proposes a framework organized upon the two main phases of every research process: design and execution. The framework is expected to promote the proper use of research methodology among engineering students. Furthermore, the methodological design from 140 selected civil engineering papers from seven different knowledge fields is analyzed. Results show that 94.29% of the papers did not explicitly present the methodological design. It was concluded that there is an absence of it within the engineering field. Machine learning for financial risk prediction has garnered substantial interest in recent decades. However, the class imbalance problem and the dilemma of accuracy gain by loss interpretability have yet to be widely studied. Symbolic classifiers have emerged as a promising solution for forecasting banking failures and estimating creditworthiness as it addresses class imbalance while maintaining both accuracy and interpretability. This paper aims to evaluate the effectiveness of REMED, a symbolic classifier, in the context of financial risk management, and focuses on its ability to handle class imbalance and provide interpretable decision rules. Through empirical analysis of a real-world imbalanced financial dataset from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, we demonstrate that REMED effectively handles class imbalance, improving performance accuracy metrics while ensuring interpretability through a concise and easily understandable rule system. A comparative analysis is conducted against two well-known rule-generating approaches, J48 and JRip. The findings suggest that, with further development and validation, REMED can be implemented as a competitive approach to improve predictive accuracy on imbalanced financial datasets without compromising model interpretability. The proliferation of pollutants affects the world's population, mainly those who live in large cities. Neurological and cardiovascular dysfunctions have a correlation with air particulate matter concentration, among other chronic diseases. Therefore, it is important to utilize different methods of analysis to build predictive models that can identify possible concentrations of contaminants in metropolitan areas. This work presents a methodology that will enable the forecasting of severe pollution contingencies using weather measurements as input variables. This predictive analytical technique combines several mathematical and statistical tools, which we refer to as predictive factor association (PFA). We perform principal component analysis on the samples to determine possible causal relationships and reduce dimensionality, resulting in orthogonal linear combinations of the variables called sample scores. For categorical variables, each linear combination probability is estimated using a window-based estimation technique or a machine learning algorithm to determine the class of a particular sample. For continuous variables, regression over the scores is carried out. The technique is used to predict environmental contingencies in Monterrey's metropolitan area based on meteorological data with R 2 between 0.7 and 0.8 and classification accuracies between 0.74 and 0.98. Polymer‐based chiral materials with exceptional optical activity can dramatically impact integrated chiral photonics due to the tunability of their optical responses coupled with ease of fabrication. Realizing these applications requires increasing the absorbance dissymmetry factor. Here, in situ, the synthesis of gold nanostars is introduced in a chiral polymer medium to produce chiral polymer‐anisotropic plasmonic nanocrystal nanocomposites. The optimized nanocomposite shows a tenfold enhancement of dissymmetry factor, gabs (up to 0.64) and a corresponding 46‐fold augmented circular dichroism (CD) value upon annealing, relative to the annealed pure chiral polymer film. Moreover, the enhancement relative to the non‐annealed polymer‐gold nanostar nanocomposite is strikingly higher: a 35‐fold increase in gabs and a 4272‐fold increase in CD. Based on computational analysis, it is concluded that the local plasmon field enhancement around the crevices and tips of nanostars is mainly responsible for the observed effect which is further supported by a signal enhancement in Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS). Thus, this study underscores the significant role of close‐range plasmon interactions in altering the chiroptical response of nanocomposite materials and a practical pathway toward the realization of next‐generation integrated photonics and optoelectronic circuitry with photon spin control. While universal tumor testing for Lynch Syndrome (LS) is recommended in all new diagnoses of colorectal cancer (CC) and endometrial cancer (EC), the cost and availability of this test in low-resource settings poses challenges. The PREdiction Model for gene Mutations (PREMM5) is a clinical algorithm designed to assess the risk of an individual carrying estimates one's risk of carrying a LS mutation. This study aims to assess the feasibility of using PREMM5 to screen for LS risk in Guatemala. This cross-sectional pilot study enrolled 50 patients with colorectal or endometrial cancer receiving treatment at LIGA-INCAN, a cancer hospital in Guatemala City, between June 2022–July 2022. Patients were contacted by phone and administered the PREMM5 survey, followed by an additional feasibility questionnaire. Of the 50 participants, 62% of patients had a PREMM5 predicted probability of ≥ 2.5%, the threshold above which genetic testing is recommended. Almost all patients found the survey easy to complete (98%), were able to easily recall personal (90%) and family (88%) medical history, understood its purpose (94%), and reported an interest in (96%) and ability to (98%) act on the results if applicable. Our study shows the role of the PREMM5 as a feasible tool for identifying individuals at risk of carrying mutations associated with LS in this low-resource setting. In this study, sperm from Africanized honey bee drones obtained during the dry and wet seasons of a semiarid region, the Caatinga biome, were characterized. The experiment was conducted during the peaks of the wet (March to June 2018) and dry (October to December 2018) seasons. Significantly higher cumulative rainfall was observed during the wet season (475.2 mm) in comparison to the dry season (27.6 mm). In each season, sperm from 50 Africanized honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) drones were obtained using the manual endophallus eversion technique and were evaluated in terms of the number of sperm per drone, motility, viability, morphology, and morphometry. The number of sperm per drone, the sperm motility, and the viability showed significantly better mean values during the wet season than in the dry season (3.8 ± 8.0 × 106 sperm/drone vs 3.0 ± 6.6 × 106 sperm/drone; 85.6 ± 8.5% vs 52.0 ± 2.9%; 82.8 ± 1.9% vs 70.9 ± 1.8%, respectively). A high incidence of sperm morphological defects (∼60%) was observed in both periods and was significantly more evident during the wet season. All morphometric parameters related to the length of the sperm head, tail, and total sperm were significantly higher during the wet season than during the dry season. Undergraduate programs face the challenge of staying up-to-date by responding to globalization, internationalization, and regionalization processes. Civil engineering programs should meet the requirements of the Architecture, Engineering, Construction, and Operation (AECO) industry. Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a methodology that involves shared digital representations of built assets to facilitate design, construction, and operation processes within the construction knowledge field. The present research describes a methodology with six mechanisms to develop and consolidate BIM-related competencies within the construction area from an undergraduate civil engineering program. It also explores students' perceptions about the subjects within this area and their relationship with the training and reinforcement of the competencies. The study follows a descriptive scope with an action research design. The principal result is the methodology, which has six mechanisms: (1) BIM implementation into topics and syllabi; (2) use of collaborative platforms; (3) professor training programs; (4) establishment of student organizations; (5) development of a BIM application project; and (6) area and subject meetings. The validation process, which included professors, enrollment, employability and research rates, and the curricular proposal and students' perceptions, revealed that the mechanisms could effectively support the development and reinforcement of BIM-related competencies. Introduction: Globally, the health and quality of life of millions of people are negatively affected by diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs). To treat these chronic wounds, a novel injectable drug for closing DFUs composed of micronized amniotic membrane was developed. This new therapeutic drug for wound repair expands on traditional allograft therapies by allowing extracellular matrix proteins, growth factors, and cytokines to reach wound anatomies in DFUs that are difficult to treat. The aim of this study was to evaluate the components of the injectable drug. Methods: Liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry and a Quantibody® human cytokine array were conducted to identify and characterize growth factors and proteins known to contribute to wound healing. In addition, hyaluronic acid was quantified and compared between the injectable and human amniotic fluid using a hyaluronan enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Cell proliferation, migration, angiogenesis, and viability were evaluated to assess the performance of the novel injectable in vitro. The rheometric properties of the product were evaluated by assessing it pre- and post-injection through a 22-gauge needle to measure the viscosity using a shear- and temperature-dependent viscosity protocol. Results: Liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry and Quantibody® human cytokine array revealed growth factors and proteins imperative for wound healing. The quantified hyaluronic acid was compared between the injectable and human amniotic fluid, resulting in a statistically significant difference, with higher protein concentrations found in the injectable. In vitro qualitative and quantitative analysis confirmed an increase in cell viability, proliferation, and migration when treated with the drug. An evaluation of the rheometric properties of the injectable drug after passing through a 22-gauge cannula presented no alterations to the biologic drug. Black carbon (BC) is a major component of submicron particulate matter (PM), with significant health and climate impacts. Many cities in emerging countries lack comprehensive knowledge about BC emissions and exposure levels. This study investigates BC concentration levels, identifies its emission sources, and characterizes the optical properties of BC at urban background sites of the two largest high-altitude Bolivian cities: La Paz (LP) (3600 m above sea level) and El Alto (EA) (4050 m a.s.l.), where atmospheric oxygen levels and intense radiation may affect BC production. The study relies on concurrent measurements of equivalent black carbon (eBC), elemental carbon (EC), and refractory black carbon (rBC) and their comparison with analogous data collected at the nearby Chacaltaya Global Atmosphere Watch Station (5240 m a.s.l). The performance of two independent source apportionment techniques was compared: a bilinear model and a least-squares multilinear regression (MLR). Maximum eBC concentrations were observed during the local dry season (LP: eBC = 1.5 ± 1.6 µ g m−3; EA: 1.9±2.0 µ g m−3). While eBC concentrations are lower at the mountain station, daily transport from urban areas is evident. Average mass absorption cross sections of 6.6–8.2 m2 g−1 were found in the urban area at 637 nm. Both source apportionment methods exhibited a reasonable level of agreement in the contribution of biomass burning (BB) to absorption. Introduction: It is estimated that 1.4 billion quails are reared each year for their eggs and meat, but animal welfare assessment protocols for this species have yet to be established. The objective of this study was to devise an animal welfare assessment protocol developed through a multidimensional approach that contained a number of animal-based indicators (ABIs) for quails (Coturnix japonica) reared for meat production. Methods: During 2021 and 2022, the identical auditor visited and audited 14 Spanish farms in their initial year of integration into an animal welfare certification scheme. The protocol is categorised into 4 principles and 12 criteria. The "good feeding" principle includes 6 indicators (1 ABI), "good housing" includes 10 indicators (5 ABIs), "good health" includes 12 indicators (9 ABIs), and "appropriate behaviour" contains 8 indicators (5 ABIs). The final welfare assessment is calculated at the farm level using scores from the on-farm recordings. The assessment is a step-by-step weighted sum of the scores from the various indicators, with the final score ranging between 0 and 100. Results and discussion: The main welfare issues found on all farms were a lack of temperature and humidity records, a poor lighting pattern, and the absence of an outdoor range or access to one. To a lesser degree, it was also found that there were excessive numbers of birds per feeder, the presence of improperly functioning drinkers (i.e., not working, inadequate water flow, or dripping water), poor litter quality, and a high prevalence of birds with dirty plumage and lameness. Despite this, the farms achieved a good overall score, being classified as "enhanced" (n = 11) and "acceptable" (n = 3). Cacao can be cultivated either as a monoculture or within diverse agroforestry systems, which differ, among others, in the choice of shade tree species, tree density, and whether conventional or organic management is applied. Agroforestry can improve ecosystem services in comparison to cacao monocultures, but the effect of different systems on soil quality, a main driver of the whole ecosystem´s health, needs further investigation. We analysed soil samples from a long-term trial in Bolivia that compares conventional and organic monocultures, conventional and organic agroforestry, successional agroforestry, and fallow plots. We measured chemical parameters (pH, organic carbon, available phosphorous), microbial parameters (microbial biomass carbon and phosphorous, microbial activity), and enzymatic activity (phosphatase, β-glucosidase, urease and protease activities). Plant inputs to soil were also quantified in the different systems. Soil organic matter and enzymatic activities were higher in fallow plots than in monocultures. Agroforestry showed intermediate values, not significantly higher than monocultures. Management type (organic versus conventional) had minimal impact on most parameters. Plant matter input quantity did not affect soil properties, suggesting that quality and diversity of plant inputs might have stronger effects than the quantity. Moderate to strong spatial variability was observed for all studied parameters. For microbial and biochemical properties, sampling season also caused strong variation. Our study contributes to highlighting that the characteristics of specific plants, such as those that grow in the fallow plots, could have a higher impact on soil quality than the sheer quantity of fresh plant material incorporated into the soil. Liver cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. In Mexico, there is a high burden of liver cancer mortality in rural states, affecting both women and men equally. Thus, we aimed to describe the demographic and clinical characteristics of hepatocellular cancer (HCC) by sex in Mexico. Demographic and clinical information was extracted retrospectively from the medical records of patients with HCC initially treated (2015–2022) at institutions participating in a national survey across the country. The male-to-female ratio was calculated at the national and regional levels, and the results were stratified by sex. Among 697 HCC patients, the age at diagnosis was 65.4 ± 11.9 years and 20% were diagnosed at ≥75 years. The male-to-female ratio was 1.4:1, ranging from 1:1 in the northwestern and southwestern regions, to 2.1:1 in the western region. The proportion of cirrhosis was similar between the sexes; however, the etiology of cirrhosis differed: cryptogenic cirrhosis was higher in women and alcohol consumption was higher in men. Men had a higher proportion of advanced HCC, poor/undifferentiated tumors, and ≥4 nodules than women. HCC in the Mexican population affects both men and women at a 1.4:1 male-to-female ratio. Background: In recent years, the medical community has witnessed a notable increase in high-energy traumatic injuries, leading to a surge in complex fracture patterns that challenge existing treatment methodologies. Among these, the posterior approach to acetabular fractures stands out for offering direct visualization of the retro-acetabular surface, with current fixation methods relying on 3.5 mm low-profile reconstruction plates and various other implants. Despite the effectiveness of these methods, there is a burgeoning demand for a singular, adaptable implant that not only streamlines the surgical process but also optimizes patient outcomes. Methods: In an innovative approach to address this need, three-dimensional (3D) models of the posterior acetabular wall were meticulously crafted using AutoCAD® software. The chosen material for the implant was 316L surgical steel for its durability and strength. The design of the implant featured a low-profile mesh structure, which was instrumental in facilitating osteosynthesis. This design allowed for the placement of screws of varying lengths in multiple directions, ensuring the initial reconstruction of the joint in an anatomical position without hindering the placement of the definitive implant. The primary objective was to secure the fixation and stabilization of the fracture by specifically targeting the smaller bone fragments. A comparative analysis was then conducted between this novel plate and a conventional 316L surgical steel, seven-hole, 3.5 mm reconstruction plate through finite element analysis. Results: The comparative analysis unveiled that both plates demonstrated comparable deformation capacities, with no significant differences in load-bearing capabilities observed. This finding suggests that the innovative plate can match the performance of traditional plates used in such surgeries. Conclusions: The finite element analysis revealed that the newly developed anatomical plate for posterior wall acetabular fractures meets the necessary physical and mechanical criteria for permanent implementation in patients with these fractures. This breakthrough represents a promising advancement that could simplify surgical procedures and potentially elevate patient outcomes. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the maternal and ultrasonographic characteristics of pregnant women who underwent cervical length (CL) measurement by transvaginal ultrasound between 11 and 13 + 6 weeks of gestation and who delivered at term or preterm. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was carried out between March 2013 and December 2018 by analyzing ultrasound data of singleton pregnant women who underwent CL measurement by transvaginal ultrasound during the first trimester scan. CL was compared between the two groups (full‐term and preterm birth [PB]) using Student's t‐test. Results: A total of 5097 pregnant women were enrolled, of whom 5061 (99.3%) had term and 36 (0.7%) had PB < 34 weeks. CL measurements did not differ between the term and preterm groups (36.62 vs. 37.83 mm, p = 0.08). Maternal age showed a significant and linear association with CL (r = 0.034, p = 0.012) and CRL (r = 0.086, p < 0.001). Smoking status was associated with shorter CL (36.64 vs. 35.09 mm, p = 0.003). When we analyzed the CL of the pregnant women in the term and preterm groups, according to the gestational age cut‐offs for prematurity (28, 30, 32, and 34 weeks), we found that there was no significant difference between the measurements in all groups (p > 0.05). Conclusion: We observed no significant differences between CL measurements between 11 and 13 + 6 weeks in pregnant women who had preterm and term deliveries. Telephysiotherapy has emerged as a vital solution for delivering remote healthcare, particularly in response to global challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic. This study seeks to enhance telephysiotherapy by developing a system capable of accurately classifying physiotherapeutic exercises using PoseNet, a state-of-the-art pose estimation model. A dataset was collected from 49 participants (35 males, 14 females) performing seven distinct exercises, with twelve anatomical landmarks then extracted using the Google MediaPipe library. Each landmark was represented by four features, which were used for classification. The core challenge addressed in this research involves ensuring accurate and real-time exercise classification across diverse body morphologies and exercise types. Several tree-based classifiers, including Random Forest, Extra Tree Classifier, XGBoost, LightGBM, and Hist Gradient Boosting, were employed. Furthermore, two novel ensemble models called RandomLightHist Fusion and StackedXLightRF are proposed to enhance classification accuracy. The RandomLightHist Fusion model achieved superior accuracy of 99.6%, demonstrating the system's robustness and effectiveness. This innovation offers a practical solution for providing real-time feedback in telephysiotherapy, with potential to improve patient outcomes through accurate monitoring and assessment of exercise performance. A comprehensive survey of the octopus fauna around the Americas is presented to facilitate and accelerate the assessment of a full understanding of American octopus biodiversity. Brief accounts are provided summarizing research efforts on octopus species taxonomy, diversity and distribution in different regions of North and South America. Octopus americanus and O. insularis are compared and clearly distinguished from each other and from the closely-related European species, O. vulgaris. The use of genus names Paroctopus and Pinnoctopus is clarified. Included is a discussion of the recent application of genus name Paroctopus to warm-temperate and tropical species of small size, along with a cautionary note about species identifications in the light of past errors in misassigning large-to-giant cold-water species to genus Paroctopus. Related to problems with identifying species of Paroctopus, there is an appended note concerning misidentifications and the importance of thorough species descriptions to obtain species information at the levels of both phenotype and genotype. A lectotype is formally designated for Bathypolypus arcticus (Prosch, 1849); and the status of so-called 'Octopus giganteus' is reviewed briefly. A supplementary online database, AmeriCeph, provides basic information about all known octopus species of the Americas, including the institutional location of type material and the identification of voucher specimens and their depositories. DNA sequences registered in this database are not all fully compatible with barcoding standards. However, a subset of DNA sequences conforming to strict barcode identifications is provided in a second supplementary table, providing barcode sequences directly applicable also to improving standards of seafood traceability. This in turn contributes to building sustainability of exploited octopus fisheries stocks and identification of species suitable for aquaculture trials to meet the increasing commercial demand for octopus worldwide. As traditional education systems struggle to keep up with technological advances, incorporating open science into Education 5.0 is critical to addressing student skills gaps. In this study, the MAICC model is introduced, a tool designed to foster complex thinking in higher education students through the evaluation of citizen science projects. It integrates research-based learning and service learning, and helps develop critical and reflective skills by applying them to reallife settings. To assess student engagement and skills development, a mixed methods approach combining qualitative and quantitative analysis was used. Findings indicate that the MAICC model promotes complex thinking, enhances critical thinking through citizen science project evaluation, and features an emphasis on citizen science and educational technology. Discussion highlights citizen science's important role in education and suggests future research exploring its wider application across disciplines and contexts to enhance 21st century skills. This study aims to evaluate the applicability of the high-resolution WaveFront Phase Imaging Sensor (WFPI) in eyes with Fuchs' Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy (FECD) through qualitative and quantitative analysis using a custom-designed Automatic Guttae Detection Method (AGDM). The ocular phase was measured using the t · eyede aberrometer and then was processed to obtain its High-Pass Filter Map (HPFM). The subjects were pathological and healthy patients from the Fundación Jiménez-Díaz Hospital (Madrid, Spain). The AGDM was developed and applied in pupils with 3 and 5 mm of diameter. A set of metrics were extracted and evaluated like the Root-Mean-Square error (RMS), Number of guttae, Guttae Area, and Area of Delaunay Triangulation (DT). Finally, a Support Vector Machine (SVM) model was trained to classify between pathological and healthy eyes. Quantitatively, the HPFM reveals a dark spots pattern according to the ophthalmologist's description of the slit-lamp examination of guttae distribution. There were significant statistical differences in all the metrics when FECD and Healthy groups were compared using the same pupil size; but comparing both pupil sizes for the same group there were significant differences in most of the variables. Developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEEs) cause disability and dependence affecting both children and the family. The aim of the study was to describe the perspective of parents of children with DEEs regarding the impact of the disease on the family. We carried out a qualitative study based on the interpretivist paradigm. Twenty-one participants were selected using purposive sampling. Parents of children with DEEs of SCN1A, KCNQ2, CDKL5, PCDH19, and GNAO1 variants were included. In-depth interviews and researcher notes were used for data collection. A thematic analysis was performed on the data. Three themes were identified in the results: (a) Assuming conflicts and changes within the couple, causing them to distance themselves, reducing their time and intimacy and leading them to reconsider having more children; (b) impact of the disorder on siblings and grandparents, where siblings perceived DEE as a burden in their lives, felt neglected, and needed to grow and mature alone; conversely, the grandparents suffered for their grandchildren and the parents, in addition to perceiving that their health worsened, and (c) reconciling the care of the child with family life and work; this led the parents to share tasks, abandon or reduce working hours and ask for help. Conclusions: Caring for a child with DEE can result in neglect of social, psychological, emotional, recreational, educational, or occupational needs and obligations that ultimately impact all family members. What is Known: • Children with DEE may develop seizures and experience developmental and cognitive problems. • Caring for a child with DEE has a social and psychological impact on the entire family.

This work proposes a novel method for the real-time identification and nonlinear control of a permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) based on a Physics-Informed Neural Network (PINN) and the exact feedback linearization approach. The proposed approach is presented in a direct-quadrature framework, where the quadrature current and the rotational speed are selected as outputs and the direct and quadrature voltages are selected as inputs. A nonlinear difference equation is selected to describe the physical dynamics of the PMSM, and a PINN is designed based on the aforementioned structure. A simplified training scheme is designed for the PINN based on a least-squares structure to facilitate online training in real time. A nonlinear controller based on exact feedback linearization is designed by considering the nonlinear model of the system identified based on the PINN. Therefore, the proposed approach involves identification and control in real time, where the PINN is trained online. In order to track the reference for the rotational speed, a nonlinear controller with integral action based on exact feedback linearization is designed based on a linear quadratic regulator. As a result, the proposed approach can be used to identify the system to be controlled in real time, and it is able to track any small change in the real model; in addition, it is robust to both external and internal disturbances, such as variations in torque load and resistance. The proposed approach is evaluated through simulation and using a real PMSM, and the results of reference tracking are evaluated under disturbances. The identification performance is evaluated by using a Taylor diagram under closed-loop and open-loop structures, where ARX and NARX structures are used for comparison. It is thereby verified that this novel proposed control approach involving a PINN-based model can adequately track the dynamics of a PMSM system, where the performance of the proposed nonlinear control is maintained even when using the identified model based on the PINN. The architecture, engineering, construction, and operation (AECO) industry has brought transformations within the field. Despite the changes, traditional teaching methods such as analyzing two-dimensional plans and models are still being used in training processes, which do not effectively promote the development of spatial skills. In this context, augmented reality (AR) can be used as a tool to translate two-dimensional information into three-dimensional space. Thus, the present study explores the use of the VT-Platform AR tool to develop and reinforce spatial skills among undergraduate civil engineering students. The study follows a quantitative approach with a descriptive scope and an experimental design. Students in the sanitary engineering subject were divided into two groups: an experimental group and a control group. A short-term teaching-learning methodology was proposed for the experimental group using the VT-Platform AR tool. Both groups took the differential aptitude test (DAT) to measure their spatial skills. The experimental group showed a higher average score compared to the control group, with a difference of 29.8%. Furthermore, the use of the VT-Platform AR tool helped standardize the level of spatial skills within the experimental group. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has considerable effects on the quality of life of female patients. Receiving the diagnosis and beginning renal replacement therapy (RRT) has a great personal impact on patients. The purpose of this study was to describe the experience of female patients with CKD at an ambulatory dialysis unit regarding diagnosis, life changes, and initiation of RRT. A qualitative exploratory study was conducted based on a social contructivism framework. Participants were recruited using purposeful sampling. In total, 18 women who received treatment for CKD with RRT were included. The women were attending the Ambulatory Dialysis Unit at a hospital belonging to the public health system of Madrid (Spain). Unstructured and semi-structured in-depth interviews, researchers' field notes, and women's personal letters were used. A systematic text condensation analysis was performed. The criteria used to control trustworthiness were credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability. Two themes emerged from the data: (a) A turning point in their lives, and (b) The emotional journey of beginning RRT. The diagnosis of CKD and the beginning of treatment implies changing routines and adapting to a new life with CKD. The first dialysis and puncture of the arteriovenous fistula is a major experience. Support from other CKD patients with more experience is perceived as a necessity and a tool to share their experiences and resolve doubts among peers. The diagnosis and initiation of RRT leads to numerous changes in the lives of women with CKD, which may influence the acceptance of treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in the rehabilitation of damaged or defective organs due to injuries or illnesses, often requiring long-term supervision by a physiotherapist in clinical settings or at home. AI-based support systems have been developed to enhance the precision and effectiveness of physiotherapy, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. These systems, which include game-based or tele-rehabilitation monitoring using camera-based optical systems like Vicon and Microsoft Kinect, face challenges such as privacy concerns, occlusion, and sensitivity to environmental light. Non-optical sensor alternatives, such as Inertial Movement Units (IMUs), Wi-Fi, ultrasound sensors, and ultrawide band (UWB) radar, have emerged to address these issues. Although IMUs are portable and cost-effective, they suffer from disadvantages like drift over time, limited range, and susceptibility to magnetic interference. In this study, a single UWB radar was utilized to recognize five therapeutic exercises related to the upper limb, performed by 34 male volunteers in a real environment. A novel feature fusion approach was developed to extract distinguishing features for these exercises. Various machine learning methods were applied, with the EnsembleRRGraBoost ensemble method achieving the highest recognition accuracy of 99.45%. We aimed to analyze the association between food insecurity (FI) and academic performance in university students, including mental health and sleep quality (SQ), in an association model. A cross-sectional design included university students (n = 466, 72.5% women) from Mexico. We applied the Latin American and Caribbean Food Security Scale, the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21), and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Students self-reported their academic grading (AG) and perceptions about their academic performance. Spearman's rho and multiple logistic regression models were used. Almost half (47%) experienced some level of FI. The median AG was 95. AG was not significantly (p > 0.05) correlated with FI, nor with depression, anxiety, stress, and SQ. Considering mental health and SQ, moderate/severe FI remained significantly associated with perceived overall progress in college (OR: 2.96; 95%CI: 1.49, 5.88) and attendance to classes (OR:3.14; 95%CI: 1.19, 8.28) as poor or regular, and it was positively related to perceiving difficulties in completing their studies (OR:2.75; 95%CI: 1.43, 5.29). Stress, anxiety, depression symptoms, and poor SQ were also significantly associated with poor/regular perception of academic performance. Introduction: To date, there are no sufficient studies aimed to determine a correlation between personal, academic, and psychological variables with academic achievement, measured with the grade point average (GPA) and intelligence in university students according to each sex. Study aim: To determine the correlation between studying strategies, personal and psychological factors with GPA and intelligence in a sample of health sciences university students. Methods: Health Sciences university students, were invited to participate, those who accepted were cited in a computer room where they signed an informed consent and filled an electronic questionnaire with sociodemographic, behavioral, psychological variables and studying strategies (from the MLSQ instrument) afterwards they performed a verbal and non-verbal intelligence test (Shipley-2). Results: A total of 439 students were included, from which 297 (67.7%) were women. The mean of age was 20.34 ± 2.61 years old. We found that no differences in GPA where observed between sexes. We detected a higher correlation between combined intelligence and GPA in women than in men. In addition, most studying strategies showed a higher correlation with GPA than intelligence scores in men´s sample. All these findings coincide with the fact that preparatory GPA was the most correlated variable with university GPA in both sexes. Finally, women showed higher levels of the sum of diseases, somatization, anxiety, depression and academic stress than men, and all these variables showed low significant correlations with the combined intelligence score only in women´s sample. Conclusion: Verbal and non-verbal intelligence scores show a lower association to GPA in men than in women, while studying strategies showed a higher association with GPA in men than in women. This study aims to develop and evaluate an LSTM neural network for predicting household energy consumption. To conduct the experiment, a testbed was created consisting of five common appliances, namely, a TV, air conditioner, fan, computer, and lamp, each connected to individual smart meters within a Home Energy Management System (HEMS). Additionally, a meter was installed on the distribution board to measure total consumption. Real-time data were collected at 15-min intervals for 30 days in a residence that represented urban energy consumption in Sincelejo, Sucre, inhabited by four people. This setup enabled the capture of detailed and specific energy consumption data, facilitating data analysis and validating the system before large-scale implementation. Using the detailed power consumption information of these devices, an LSTM model was trained to identify temporal connections in power usage. Proper data preparation, including normalisation and feature selection, was essential for the success of the model. The results showed that the LSTM model was effective in predicting energy consumption, achieving a mean squared error (MSE) of 0.0169.
